Lamborghini Miura SV turns 50 in 2021
The Lamborghini Miura SV, the last evolution of the highly successful P400 project, was officially unveiled in March 1971, on the Carrozzeria Bertone stand at the Geneva Motor Show. It was also fitted with different size tires between the front and rear, with the rear wheels increased from 7 to 9 inches and equipped with 255-section tires. The design of the rims was revised too, to make them sportier, and most SV customers ordered them with the striking gold finish.
These technical modifications demanded a revision of the Miura SV’s exterior, too, and this work was performed by the same Marcello Gandini who had overseen the original project. Visually, the revised SV was characterized by wider rear fenders, differently designed tail-lights, and a front bonnet characterized by a new air intake for the radiator.
One of the most important visual changes to the Miura SV was in fact the absence of the famous “eyelashes” around the headlights. There was no real technical reason for this esthetic modification; it was simply that Ferruccio Lamborghini, who knew very well that the assembly and perfect finishing of the eyelashes was a highly complex and time-consuming step, wanted to reduce the Miura’s production time. However, for his own personal Miura SV – the only one to officially adopt this specification – he asked for the eyelashes around the headlights to remain.
The SV’s interior is better finished and more modern looking than that of the previous versions, thanks mainly to greater use of leather for the upholstery and the presence of various chromed details.
The Miura SV’s official top speed was over 290 km/h, and from a standing start it covered one kilometer in just under 24 seconds – record performance results back then.
In early 1973, after 150 units had been produced, the Miura SV was taken out of production, although two years later, in 1975, a final specimen (now at MUDETEC, Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese) was expressly manufactured for Walter Wolf.
The withdrawal of the Miura SV from production marked the end of an era in which speed and sinuous lines predominated, and in which a small group of young men, driven by an innate passion and blessed with great technical skills, were able to create what for many was, and still remains, the most beautiful car ever produced in series.

The new Lamborghini Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae is the latest of a series of 12-cylinder Lamborghini supercars stretching all the way back to the 1966 Miura, which is generally regarded as the first modern supercar. That was followed by the Countach, which became the prototypical Lamborghini supercar. Its wedge-shaped body has been copied by every Lamborghini sports car since, including the company’s flagship Aventador.
The Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae combines the general exterior styling of the Aventador S with the mechanical engineering of the more extreme Aventador SVJ. This new model has more power than either one, though. The Ultimae’s V12 engine produces up to 769 horsepower, 10 more than the SVJ and 39 more than Aventador S.
Like other current Aventador models, the all-wheel-drive Ultimae has four-wheel steering, which allows it to turn tighter corners and make smoother lane changes in highway driving. The front bumper has been redesigned to provide more aerodynamic downforce on the car’s front wheels for better handling. Only 350 coupe and 250 convertible versions of the Ultimae will be built. Prices for the coupe version will start at about $500,000 and for the convertible at just under $550,000.
Lamborghini’s other sports car model, the V10-powered Huracán, will continue as a gasoline-only model until 2024, Lamborghini chief executive Stephan Winkelmann said.
The car that ultimately replaces the Aventador will still have a V12 engine, Winkelman said. But it will be assisted by electric motors and batteries that can be plugged in to charge. Lamborghini has previously announced that, by the end of 2024, every Lamborghini model will be a plug-in hybrid. These cars will combine powerful batteries and electric motors with an internal combustion engine to provide the power, light weight and engine sound supercar buyers demand, Winkelmann said.
Lamborghini will later offer a fully electric four-seat car and, after that, Lamborghini’s replacement for the Urus SUV will also be fully electric, he said. The company has not said when it might offer a fully electric two-seat sports cars.
Lotus’ fully electric future
When Lotus’s last gasoline-powered model, the Emira, enters production next spring it will be powered by the same Toyota V6 engine that has been used in other Lotus cars, like the Exige and Evora.
A few months later it will also be produced with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine made by AMG, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The AMG engine, the first to be used in a Lotus car, will be offered with a new twin-clutch automatic transmission similar to ones used in racing cars. Twin-clutch transmissions can provide faster shifts and a more direct-feeing connection between the engine and the wheels than an ordinary automatic transmission.
The engines will produce between 360- and 400-horsepower, but Lotus would not specify which engine is more powerful. Besides the Toyota engine, and the manual and automatic transmissions that will go with it, the Emira is, otherwise, an all-new car, said Matt Windle, managing director of Lotus Cars. Prices for the Emira will start at £60,000 in Britain, including taxes, an amount equivalent to about $82,000.
Lotus’s next car after this will be the Evlja, a 1,900-horsepower fully electric supercar that will cost $2 million. With its enormous price and power, the Evija is far outside of Lotus’s usual market space. Lotus plans to follow it, though, with more affordable electric sports cars and, for the first time in the brand’s history, practical models like crossover SUVs.
Windle acknowledged that making electric sports cars is a challenge because of conflicting customer requirements for both driving range and high performance.
“The thing with sports cars is people want them to go a long way, but they also want them to go very fast, very quickly,” he said.
Windle had previously left Lotus to work with Tesla to develop the Tesla Roadster, which was based on a Lotus chassis. He rejoined the British automaker in 2017.
He’s confident that people will enjoy the performance electric cars can offer once they feel the instant response from electric motors.

Lançado em 1966, o Miura (acima) surpreendeu pelo motor central e a bela carroceria desenhada pela Bertone. A última unidade foi produzida em 1973. Era um Miura S, evolução da linha, e foi entregue ao filho de Ferdinando Innocenti, construtor de automóveis italiano e criador da Lambretta.
Antes, porém, em 1968 a marca apresentou o Islero 400 GT (abaixo) no Salão de Genebra. A estrutura e mecânica eram as mesmas do Miura. Entre as evoluções havia suspensão independente e freios a disco nas quatro rodas.
O Espada (abaixo), lançado no mesmo ano, foi o primeiro Lamborghini com vendas acima de mil unidades (1.227). Com capacidade para quatro pessoas, teve três configurações. E, a partir de 1974, passou a ser oferecido com câmbio automático de três marchas da Chrysler. Foi produzido até 1978.
Motor V8 estreou no Jarama
Depois vieram o Jarama (acima), feito de 1970 a 1976, e o Urraco (abaixo), produzido entre 1972 e 1979, que foi o primeiro Lamborghini com motor V8. Havia três versões (2.0, 2.5 e 3.0), com potências de 182 a 250 cv. Com a mais “forte”, o carro podia chegar a 250 km/h, de acordo com informações da fabricante.
Em 1974 a marca lança o Countach (abaixo). Feito até 1978, tinha carroceria também assinada por Marcello Gandini e Nuccio Bertone. Entre os destaques, o motor 4.0 V12 de 375 cv era montado na longitudinal (Longitudinale Posteriore) – sigla LP é utilizada pela Lamborghini até hoje.
Além disso, o Countach tinha portas que se abriam para cima. O sistema virou uma espécie de “marca registrada” e é descrito como “portas Lambo”. A carroceria, com belas linhas e desenho em forma de cunha, tinha apenas 1,07 metro de altura. Surgia um novo ícone.
Anos 70 marcaram declínio
Mas os anos 70 foram muito difíceis para a empresa. Nem o sucesso do Countach, cujas vendas somaram 809 unidades, foi suficiente para impedir o declínio da Lamborghini.
As infinitas crises do petróleo dizimaram o mercado de superesportivos. O Silhouette (abaixo), feito de 1976 a 1979, teve apenas 55 unidades vendidas. O grupo vendeu a divisão de tratores para a Fiat. Mas nem isso evitou a derrocada da companhia.
Ferrucio Lamborghini embolsou um bom dinheiro e fui curtir a vida às margens do Lago di Garda. Em julho de 1980 os (franceses) irmãos Mimram assumiram o controle da empresa. A “Nuova Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini” , deu início à produção do LM 002 (abaixo).
Jipão de 4 portas é de 1986
O jipão, criado para uso militar, tinha linhas quadradonas e quatro portas. Equipado com o mesmo motor 5.2 V12 de 444 cv do Countach, chegava a 210 km/h. Teve 300 unidades fabricadas de 1986 a 1992.
A companhia também passou a trabalhar na evolução do Silhouette. A carroceria foi remodelada e o motor V8 “cresceu” de 3 para 3,5 litros. A potência, de 250 cv, foi mantida.
O resultado dessa empreitada foi o Jalpa (acima), que teve 420 unidades construídas de 1981 a 1988. O fim da produção do modelo marcou também o encerramento da oferta de carros da marca com motor V8.
Chrysler e Diablo
Em 1987 a Lamborghini foi comprada pela Chrysler. E, sob o comando da empresa norte-americana, lançou o Diablo (abaixo), em 1990. O carro tinha desenho surpreendente e o emblemático sistema de portas que se abriam para cima.
O chassi era tubular e o motor, V12 de 4 litros e 375 cv. Com esse conjunto o Diablo podia acelerar de 0 a 100 km/h em 4,5 segundos e chegar a 325 km. Feito até 1991, teve cerca de 3 mil unidades vendidas.
No fim dos anos 90 a Chrysler entrou em declínio. E, apesar do sucesso do Diablo, vendeu a Lamborghini a um grupo da Indonésia, que pouco tempo depois se viu em meio a uma grave crise financeira.
Audi salva a marca
Em 1998 a Audi, que pertence à Volkswagen, comprou a italiana e a salvou da falência. Três anos depois, no Salão de Frankfurt (Alemanha), a marca lançou o Murciélago (acima). O superesportivo, batizado com o nome de um famoso touro espanhol, dava início a um período de prosperidade para a Lamborghini.
Sob o comando da Audi, marca se reergueu. Todos os carros lançados desde então, como o Gallardo (acima), o Aventador (abaixo) e o Huracán, fizeram grande sucesso de crítica e público – e mantiveram a tradição do batismo com nome de touros.
Além disso, a marca lançou modelos exclusivos e séries limitadas. Como o Revénton, de 2007, o Sesto Elemento (2010), o Veneno e o Egoista (2013). Um dos mais emblemáticos é o Centenário, de 2016, feito para celebrar os 100 anos do nascimento de Ferruccio Lamborghini.
  SUV Urus tem fila de espera
Os 40 carros da série – 20 da versão cupê (acima) e 20 da roadster – tinham motor V12 de 770 cv, o mais potente feito pela marca até então. Com preço sugerido a partir de € 1,75 milhão (mais impostos), o Lamborghini Centenário teve todas as unidades vendidas rapidamente.
Na esteira do sucesso dos superesportivos, a marca resolveu entrar também na onda dos SUVs. E a aposta não poderia ter sido mais certeira. Lançado em 2018, o Urus (abaixo) é o modelo de maior sucesso da história da Lamborghini.
Em 2019, o SUV respondeu por mais da metade dos 8.200 Lamborghini emplacados no mundo. E foi responsável pelo crescimento das vendas da marca, que em 2018 somaram 5.750 unidades. A fila de espera para o modelo inclusive no Brasil, onde seu preço sugerido é de cerca de R$ 2,4 milhões.
