The story is the WHO, WHAT, and WHERE. It is the chronological events—from which we learn who is in the story, what happens, and where it happened.
Plot, by contrast, is the HOW, WHEN, and WHY. It is a series of scenes that tells us how the characters act in relation to the central conflict, when in the context of these character’s lives the conflict occurs, and why characters act the way they do.
You need both in writing—not just in fiction—to provide a compelling narrative.
An example of something that is all story would be if you find yourself stringing together a series events by saying “and then, and then, and then.” It is harder to imagine something that is all plot, but it might be a piece of writing that discusses motivations and back stories while failing to describe any of the events that actually occur in the character’s life.
For example, in The Gift of the Magi, Della sells her hair, then she buys a watch chain, then she gifts the watch chain to Jim, and then Jim gives Della hair combs. That is story. You can already sees the contours of the plot in the series of events, but it would hardly be a satisfying piece of writing if O. Henry had only told us those events. We care that Della cut her hair because she was selling it, her most prized possession, for money to buy her husband Jim a gift. Jim, too, sells his most prized possession, his watch, because he wants to buy a gift for Della. We are moved by the story only because we get to see why the characters performed the actions they did.
𝐹𝑟𝑒𝑦𝑡𝑎𝑔'𝑠 𝑃𝑦𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑑
Freytag’s Pyramid is a classic way of visualizing exposition, the inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. You do not have to, nor should you, devote equal time to each part of Freytag’s pyramid. This type of visualization can be modified to fit the needs of your story—such as having more than one climax which naturally leads to more than one section of rising action and falling action.
𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷𝐸 𝑃𝑙𝑜𝑡 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒
The ABCDE plot structure is another way of organizing the events in your story.
Action: The events that set off the story. This section will introduce the setting, characters, and inciting incident.
Background: Provide background and context for the characters and their actions while the conflict is being developed. Obstacles help demonstrate motive, motivation, and character.
Climax (or crisis): The culmination the story where the conflict finally comes to a head.
Denouement: The events following the climax where you can explore the impacts of the climax; beginning wrapping up any loose ends.
Ending: The conclusion; something—the character, the world, or both—has changed and we cannot go back to how things were before the story began.

2023.06.12 | day 35/100 days of productivity

completed today:
- finished the second module of the hsk 4 track on dot—very excited about this! the amount of time it takes me to read a unit has been steadily decreasing, and it makes me really proud of myself!
- took mongolian notes—today was continuing notes on present continuous.
- bought a planner for the upcoming academic year, bought some housewarming gifts for a friend, and went to the post office.
- finally got back to 《找得着北》—i was amazed at how much more quickly i was able to read than last time i was reading it! my need to use the pop-up dictionary has decreased, and i'm much more able to infer words based on context than before.
- read another piece on CRW—i missed a question on both the vocab quiz and the reading quiz, but it only took me about three minutes to actually read the excerpt (it took me another four to answer the questions), which i'm very happy about!
- completed TOFU, duolingo, and anki maintenance.
to do:
- kurmanji notes—i need to catch up on the notes i didn't take the other day.
- read more zdzb.
- read one to two more pages of tgcf and add vocab to anki.

Reset: Aperture, shutter and iso (TO DO)
100 ISO – sunny day, 200 ISO – cloudy day, 800 tops daylight, 1800, – night photography
Further up more light sensitive e.g. less light higher iso
Length of time light is let in – shutter.
Increasing the number of the shutter allows more light in
Higher for more movement
The middle is about 1/125 min if you're holding by hand, anything lower use a tripod
More light the opener the aperture is, the darker less, more depth of field
F stops = measurement of aperture
Depth of field = measures the focal range, the number of things in focus
Smaller aperture more depth of field
Higher aperture less depth of field e.g. focus on subject and background blurred
Each of the A, S, and I settings affect each other.

I feel like the rwby fndm would be a much nicer place if we just listed the things we liked and didn't like abt v8 plainly and honestly w/I the implicit accusation of being a hater or a stannie, like
Things I liked: Schnug, Oscar and ozpin, Salem body horror, the hound, the horror vibes of ep 8, maiden penny, winter character dev, willow and Klein 😳, may marigold getting to business (the HH in general honestly), watts roasting cinders ass, cinder being the crazy bitch she was always meant to be, emercury softness
Things I didn't like: ironwood getting hit with the stupid stick multiple times, in my opinion multiple plot contrivances to give team rwby the win with minimal actual work from them (eg then sitting in the manor and complaining for a long ass time), Weiss and Whitley's rushed, poor excuse of a reconciliation somehow making weiss' character unlikable, dues ex machina Whitley (tbh only added to how poorly done his "character arc" was), Penny's suicide, the characteristic dodging of any responsibility of a female characters due to a Big Mad Male abuser (tm) (like seriously, not everything needs to be an abuse arc), jacques' death

i would also love to be a writer but i am unsure if i should pursue english lit or creative writing. also interested in doing further research. advice?
That’s a hard question to answer, I’ve heard from some people that they think reading is a more important skill to have when writing but I honestly think I’ve learned so much more from being in creative writing classes and having my work workshopped. One of my classmates said something that really ran true with me the other day, something like when in workshop he doesn’t really take the critique and feedback to edit the piece we are workshopping, but rather takes that information to apply it to his future writing. And whether it’s to edit a current piece, or to utilize that info and figure out what areas are weak within your work for future writing, workshop is an imperative experience in sharpening a writer’s skills. I don’t think that’s just for me either because I’ve been with the people I’m workshopping with now for two semesters and I’ve seen their work get so much better in the course of that time.
I’m lucky I think because my school requires a LOT of english credits along with the creative writing credits and the CRW program at my school also requires separate application from the school application (hopefully that makes sense). So first you get admitted into the English program, then you get admitted into the CRW program if they accept your application. It’s kind of like doing both.
Also, consider whether you would like to pursue and MFA or not and if you would, look into those programs to see what they look for in their applicants. Some may prioritize a degree that actually says “creative writing”. Also, if you want to pursue publication through an agent and a publishing company (rather than self-publication) an MFA is something many agents look for when considering authors to represent (proof of experience and dedication).
You definitely don’t need a creative writing degree to be a writer, but taking creative writing classes and experiencing workshopping in an environment where there is an experienced professor giving their input is ultimately what convinced me to pursue creative writing fully 100%.

- completed all the notes i needed to get caught up on for the past few days—this led to me realising i am going to have to drop thai because of my lack of resources that i can use, which i'm disappointed about :(
- did two dot units—i read the first one without using the dictionary at all, and barely had to use it for the second one!
- read a couple CRW readings.
- read a couple hsk 4 reading sections.
- did TOFU, duolingo, and anki practice.
- wrote today's journal entry.
to do:
- reevaluate how i want to use my bullet journal.
- turn in the second part of my lit final.
- read a few more dot, CRW, and hsk reading units.
