08 April 1963
“As there were no glasses backstage they drank their beers from teacups. We had a good chat, talking mostly about music and their favourite artists. They went out of their way to be jovial, obliging and friendly. I asked if I could take a photo of them. ‘Of course,’ they replied. ‘Just a minute,’ said Paul, ‘I must clean my teeth first.’ After a while Paul was ready and John positioned the group for their photo.
‘Right,’ John said. ‘When I say three, we’ll all smile and you take the picture.’ John began counting ‘one, two, THREE’-literally yelling ‘THREE’ and making the other Beatles and myself nearly jump out of skins. I wasn’t able to take the picture, but Paul was the worst casualty. He had still been holding the open tube of toothpaste and when John had shouted, he squeezed the tube and a long length of toothpaste shot down his trouser leg. After much laughter I finally got my photo with Paul keeping his hand over the embarrassing stain on his trousers.” Norman Scott, DJ

November 12, 1963 – The Beatles postpone both of their performances in Portsmouth due to Paul being sick with with gastric flu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Local doctor John Langmaid was called to the Guildhall theatre after The Beatles had finished a brief two-and-a-half-minute interview with Jeremy James for Day By Day. Shortly thereafter press officer Charles Gillet announced the shows had been cancelled.
Dr. John Langmaid’s account of that day:
“I was a family doctor in Southsea having joined my father’s previously single-handed practice in 1962. On the morning of 12 November I had been called to visit a young girl patient of mine who had had a bad attack of asthma - I think she was 12 years old, or thereabouts. She had a ticket for the Beatles concert that evening and there were floods of tears when I said that she wasn’t well enough to go. Later in the day I was told by my secretary that there had been a phone call from the Guildhall requesting me to go there as soon as possible to see one of the Beatles. When I arrived, I was taken in via a back entrance and thence upstairs to a room where Paul McCartney was lying down on what I think was a settee. The other members of the group were in the same room and I remember John Lennon pacing up and down looking rather anxious. I examined Paul and prescribed some medicine. It was quite clear to me that there was no way that the poor chap would be able to perform that evening, so the show was cancelled - much, as I imagine, to the relief of all of them! The following morning, I visited him again at the Royal Beach Hotel and found him looking and feeling much better. I remember saying that it would be OK for them to travel onward that day. I was thanked politely and then fought my way out through a barrage of press reporters in the hotel lobby. I then visited the girl I had seen the previous morning. I was greeted by a beaming child who thanked me for cancelling the Beatles’ concert and wanted to know whether the stethoscope I used to examine her was the one I had used for Paul!

IN A HURRY
One of Paul’s story or character songs? I’ve never heard him comment on the inspiration. To me, it has a feel of London 1963, London Theatreland and life with The Ashers of Wimpole Street.
It begins with a description of the hectic life of the song’s subject:
“She was always in a hurry, never took the time to look around. She was always one to worry and fret, staring at the ground..Every minute, she'd be rushing, someone always breathing down her neck. Felt like everyone was pushing her down, keeping her in check”
Sound familiar? In The Lyrics, discussing his impressions when he moved in with the Ashers, he says:
“There was not a second that wasn’t accounted for. Jane would go off to her agent, then read for a play, then meet someone for lunch, then have a vocal coach teaching her a Norwich accent for her next thing.”
The third verse gives us:
How could she leave? She's gotta stay, somebody has to sit and wait. Deep in a dream, she hears a voice "It's not too late to celebrate"
Given the frequency with which the chorus and outro feature the phrase “Never Too Late” (41 times, not that I’m counting), you might have expected that to be the song’s title, rather than ‘In A Hurry’. Perhaps that would have drawn a bit too much attention to a particular incident. In December 1963 (16 December according to Dafydd Rees in his book ‘The Beatles 1963: A Year In The Life), Paul and Jane’s relationship became public knowledge when they were photographed together attending Sumner Arthur Long’s play ‘Never Too Late’ at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London.
Tumblr media
“We had decided not to go to the bar, so we were just going to sit it out..I really was not used to the personal burdens imposed by fame, so we were just talking in our seats, and suddenly ten paparazzi came scampering in with those cameras going flash, flash, flash like La Dolca Vita, and then, just as quickly, they all just scampered out again”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“They were like the Keystone Cops. But oh my God, we were shocked.”
‘In A Hurry, was released as a single along with ‘Home Tonight’, and featured artwork based on the parlour game ‘Exquisite Corpse’.
Tumblr media
‘Exquisite Corpse’ can be played as a drawing game, as in the cover art, or as a word game. I wonder if it was one of the ones played at the dining table at 57 Wimpole Street that Paul recalled to Barry Miles in ‘Many Years From Now’.

"they'd come to the studio and horse about. You had to crack the whip and get on the loudspeaker talk-back key quite a lot and say, 'Come on, chaps!' They'd be lying all over the floor giggling. I can remember just looking at the clock, throwing your hands up in horror, thinking will they ever settle down? Stop horsing about? I mean people would go and get locked in the toilets and fool about."

Wales coatch Warren Gatland four uncapped players in Six Nations championship

Wales coatch Warren Gatland four uncapped players in Six Nations championship
Wales head coach Warren Gatland has named four uncapped players in his squad for the Guinness Six Nations championship.
Ospreys centre Keiran Williams, Cardiff centre Mason Grady, Ospreys lock Rhys Davies and Cardiff second row forward Teddy Williams have all been selected. The quartet are the only international rookies among a 37-man group, with Gatland’s second spell as Wales boss beginning against Ireland on February 4.
Scarlets hooker Ken Owens has been appointed captain, being preferred to other candidates such as Justin Tipuric, Dan Biggar and Alyn Wyn Jones. Elsewhere, there are recalls for 34-year-old Ospreys scrum-half Rhys Webb – who last played Test rugby in 2020 – Ospreys fly-half Owen Williams, Scarlets back Rhys Patchell, Cardiff prop Rhys Carre and Dragons back-row forward Aaron Wainwright.
Selection absentees include Ross Moriarty, Nicky Smith and Ryan Elias, while injuries have sidelined the likes of fly-half Gareth Anscombe and lock Will Rowlands. But Gloucester wing Louis Rees-Zammit, who is currently out of action due to an ankle problem, has been picked.
Gatland said: “It’s probably a bigger squad than I would normally name, but we want to have a good Six Nations and also look forward to the World Cup.
We have some youngsters that have come in and then we’ve some older, very experienced players that we need to manage.
Tipuric serves timely reminder of all-round skill
Few people who have been watching international rugby for the past decade will have missed just how rounded a player Justin Tipuric can be, but for that small minority, Saturday evening’s clash in Swansea showed what he can do.
Against French champions Montpellier, Ospreys found themselves trailing, but a brilliant kick to the wing from Tipuric for Keelan Giles eventually ended with the flanker sprinting onto Giles’ kick back inside.
It is looking at the whole element for the squad and how we get the balance right because that is definitely going to be a challenge over the next 10 months.
On the captaincy, Gatland added: Ken is rather experienced and a passionate Welshman – it approach lots to him to play for Wales. He is likewise very famous with the players.
He came back from harm and changed into truely awesome all through the autumn marketing campaign. Probably, if you are selecting a team in the intervening time, he’s the primary in that role.
It was also showed that ex-Wales back-rower Jonathan Thomas has been recruited by using Gatland to train the contact location. A WRU tweet read: “Official – Jonathan Thomas joins the Welsh setup, being responsible for the contact location. He gained sixty seven Welsh caps and has coached at Bristol, Worcester and Ealing. Croeso, Jonathan!
Wales’ Guinness Six Nations squad
Forwards (20): Rhys Carre (Cardiff Rugby 17 caps) Wyn Jones (Scarlets – 45 caps) Gareth Thomas (Ospreys – 17 caps) Dewi Lake (Ospreys – 8 caps) Ken Owens (Scarlets – 86 caps), Captain Bradley Roberts (Dragons – 3 caps) Leon Brown (Dragons – 22 caps) Tomas Francis (Ospreys – 67 caps) Dillon Lewis (Cardiff Rugby – 45 caps) Adam Beard (Ospreys – 41 caps) Rhys Davies (Ospreys – uncapped) Dafydd Jenkins (Exeter Chiefs – 1 cap) Alun Wyn Jones (Ospreys – 155 caps) Teddy Williams (Cardiff Rugby – uncapped) Taulupe Faletau (Cardiff Rugby – 95 caps) Jac Morgan (Ospreys – 6 caps) Tommy Reffell (Leicester Tigers – 4 caps) Justin Tipuric (Ospreys – 89 caps) Christ Tshiunza (Exeter Chiefs – 3 caps) Aaron Wainwright (Dragons – 36 caps)

Wednesday 22 May
“The group and their entourage arrived and sat in the lounge area. They came through, picked up some bits and pieces from the buffet, and took them back to the bar area, where they were all having a few beers. They were very matey, very ordinary, lots of jokes and banter. They stayed up really late, quite a large crowd of them, drinking and smoking. I was so tired after working such a long shift, but they were such friendly lads, I didn’t mind.
“The next morning, they played a joke on one of the chambermaids. She had gone in to clean the room, and they were all in one bed! She was quite shocked! That morning there was a group of fans outside, and we were told by the management to keep our mouths shut, and not to reveal any details of the group’s stay. The Beatles were a breath of fresh air, somebody with a different accent, very polite.” Charles Finch, restaurateur
Thursday 23 May
John, Paul and George stopped off for lunch at the Willow Cafe in Stamford, Rutland (Paul ordered a knickerbocker glory with a fried egg on top), while Ringo ate with Terry Young Six bassist John Rostill at the nearby Olde Barn Restaurant.
At the end of the evening, several fans made their way to the back entrance of the cinema in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Beatles. They were not to be disappointed-the group appeared through a door at the top of the fire escape and waved. John balanced a pile of autograph books and LPs on the railing, throwing them down to the fans. Many of the LPs and books were ruined. One fan remembered, ‘The fab four thought it was very funny and went back inside laughing, leaving scenes of mayhem below. I’ve been a bit ambivalent about them since.’

“He [Dezo Hoffman] took several shots of the Beatles and was himself filmed on an 8mm camera, first by Paul and then George, putting new film in his camera. They then went to Paul’s house a half-mile away, Ringo riding as Paul’s passenger, with John in the back filming the journey.” (The Beatles 1963 by Dafydd Rees, 2022)

name rating masterlist because apparently this somehow happened
not sure why everyone is giving a person known to practise Evil Magic and whose url is bondsmagii their literal actual names but it’s cool. I’m sure you can all trust my magical integrity and rest safely knowing I would never ever do anything untoward. it’s fine.
anyway without further ado, time for what a complete fucking stranger thinks of all your names.
Tumblr media
definitely valid. pronounced it with a hard C when I first read it so I’d say that’s the more natural way to do it. soft C would not be valid but hard C is definitely valid. may steal this name for one of my fantasy characters, it’s that valid. it seems slightly familiar but every time I think about why that is, some dark shadow passes over my mind and erases whatever memories I’m conjuring. I am not going to question this.
Tumblr media
another valid name. very pretty, very Italian, absolutely conjures up some decadent aesthetics. seems like the kind of name a femme fatale would bear, in a dark Cold War era spy movie set across several countries in Europe. a good look.
Tumblr media
love it. another one I might steal for a fantasy series. reminds me of the name Ilya, which is another name I adore.
Tumblr media
I think this name is adorable tbh and it’s something I would consider for a child, if I wasn’t going to give all my potential children vastly English-people-pronouncing-it-immune Irish names. Rowan and Rohan are two names I absolutely love.
Tumblr media
I really love this name. yeah it’s a bit old-fashioned but I think it’s so pretty, and I love all the vowels. I like names with a lot of vowels; probably because those of us with Irish names probably have about a million of them between us. I think this is one of those rare names that suits a person through their whole life: I can imagine an Eloise at all ages, which is a useful trait in a name.
Tumblr media
ngl I’m pretty neutral on the name Sarah. it’s not something I actively dislike for the name alone, but I knew a Sarah who was such a fucking dick when I was younger so it’s kind of tarnished it for me. Syd is an amazing name, though, and related Sydney is such a kick-ass name for a woman. Syd I like because a) comes from Sydney which is cool and b) is more gender-neutral, so everyone can be sexy. you are definitely making a good choice.
Tumblr media
love it. sounds like “fenian” and I can always appreciate that. you might not want to introduce yourself in Belfast though.
Tumblr media
like TAL-ee-ESS-in, right? love it. this is a very cool name and I have never actually heard of it before so this is a nice discovery. lots of cool nickname potential, too, which is always a bonus.
Tumblr media
honestly not a fan of Carol, but like Marie and Carol makes a good second name to it, so “Marie Carol” gets a pass. not sure if you pronounce Marie like “mah-REE” or “marry” (I would tend to say “marry”), and I think it would sound better like mah-REE so it doesn’t sound like “marry Carol” (who is she...) but that might just be My Accent™. it looks like the name of the mysterious daughter in a modern Gothic novel, who knows more than she’s letting on. she would only ever be called Marie Carol, never just Marie, and she would be oddly insistent upon this. possibly something something fae.
Tumblr media
ooh, I like this. it conjures up all the images of the night sky and things Beyond, and I always appreciate that. it seems almost fairy-tale-esque.
Tumblr media
ngl this one doesn’t quite jump out at me... like how it sounds but the spelling it quite dull. there are names that sound similar that I like much more, like Anya or Áine (also said like anya); they have the different A sounds at the beginning and end as well but look much cooler. obvioudly it’s related to Annette which I think is a little old-fashioned for my tastes. I wouldn’t trust me to give you suggestions, though. I’ll probably come out with something insane like Aoibheann or Mairghréad.
Tumblr media
I do not personally like the name Megan for the same reason! I have synesthesia and the hollow dun-dun sound is very unpleasant for me 😂 it is not as bad as hearing “Meg”, though -- I just cannot cope with that. I do however think the name definitely suits some people, and I appreciate when it’s just spelled Megan, because it’s a Welsh name and that’s how it’s spelled. it makes me cringe when people say it’s Irish and give it a faux-Irish spelling like Meghan or god forbid Meaghan. so you’re definitely valid for that.
Tumblr media
I like Vienna! I like most V names tbh. however Dafydd is definitely a cooler and sexier name, so you’re making a good choice.
Tumblr media
is that like the German name Anneliese? if so it’s valid, I really love that name. the way you spell it looks cool as well, but I can see why nobody would ever be able to write it down. I bet you get a bunch of cursed phonetic spellings, which I can absolutely relate to.

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Rock the Joint – Bill Haley and The Saddlemen
"Rock around the Clock" – Bill Haley and his Comets
Apuntes
