I've found what appear to be cavities in my teeth. Specifically the ones that were trapped under the bands that engulfed my entire molar so I couldn't do shit about it except try to brush it and keep it clean. I'm super pissed

Oh god, I really feel you on not asking for sedatives because they don't work on you! I got local anesthesia exactly once in a dentist when I was a kid and it was one of the worst dentist experiences of mine, because it didn't do absolutely anything but the dentist thought I couldn't feel a thing, so they weren't wary of hurting me at all. After that I've never gotten it again.
----
SAME! The anesthesia - or is the correct word sedatives where they numb the tooth? - has to be strong in my case. Once a dentist didn't believe me because hey, I'm a young girl and he's a middle-aged man and THE professional! So, instead of the 20 minutes appointment he ended up using 60 minutes on me because he didn't listen when I said the mild anesthesia will not kick in and refused to give me the strong stuff until 40 minutes had passed.
I told this to this female dentist I use. She took it seriously and explained that the mild anesthesia (or is it sedative??) contains adrenaline which in some cases can nullify its effect in the body. She also mentioned that dentist prefer to use the mild sedative/anesthesia because it wears off quicker and helps the patient to return back to normal eating & drinking sooner.
These guys I go to get treated by have immediately been like "Don't worry. We won't get stingy with the sedatives. We'll use it as much as you ever need so that you won't feel anything, and if you feel even slight discomfort, just say it and we'll add some more".
It usually takes 2-3 ampules the strong stuff to numb my mouth.

Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia Watch Episode 7 To Catch a Changeling
Tumblr media
How to catch a changeling for idiots.
Tumblr media
“All right”
Tumblr media
“Do your worst”
Tumblr media
The Sword of Daylight. A weapon to kill trolls and cutting watermelon.
Tumblr media
“What is this mockery?” Me seeing stupid shit.
Tumblr media
“You want to take it for a spin?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Cries in Troll*
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, no one will notice.
Tumblr media
“Ridiculous garment” Agree.
Tumblr media
“Sorry. Draal was training Jim”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Draal?” “Training?”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, he sorta made a home in my basement to look out for the place”
Tumblr media
“Of course. When a troll is defeated in combat, it’s completely natural for them to take refuge in the victor’s domicile” So, this happened before?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s gone.
Tumblr media
“It was, eh... It was out of focus, and i did forget to turn on the flash” Once again, i went back.
Tumblr media
And the flash was on.
Tumblr media
Have some Jim is done with this bushigal face.
Tumblr media
“I’ve not left the Heartstone in a century” This is what it’s like to be force to go somewhere, cause they say it’ll be worth it. But it’s really not. Wow Vendel is becoming the most relatable character in this series.
Tumblr media
“I hate conspiracies”
Tumblr media
“That is why i am dedicated to rooting them out” If Trump hired Blinky to root out all the conspiracies of him Blinky will end up making them worse for Trump. #LetTrumphireBlinky
Tumblr media
“If it’s everyone, it must be a conspiracy!” I would say Donald Trump, but that would be insult to Blinky.
Tumblr media
“Later”
Tumblr media
“Oh, no. Claire”
Tumblr media
“Claire? A changeling?” Changeling Claire au.
Tumblr media
“No. When i thought i was gonna die, i wrote Claire a letter, too, and told her everything”
Tumblr media
“Everything?’
Tumblr media
“Everything” And what is this “Everything” you speak of? What did you write?
Tumblr media
“There you are!” Mission: Avoid Claire. Mission Fail.
Tumblr media
“You didn’t run into Miss. Janeth yet, did you?”
Tumblr media
“Is she mad i couldn’t make rehearsal yesterday?
Tumblr media
“Something kinda came up”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Heh heh” Good of the episode to put flashbacks in for me, so i don’t have to do it myself. Also Jim implies that last episode happened yesterday (Out of universe, yeah it did) But i thought about it and today would be Monday, and yesterday was Sunday. Jim and Draal’s fight happened on a school day meaning that it was Friday. Jim and Toby getting arrested and Jim making the letters were on a Thursday, and Jim and Toby finding out about Nomura was a Wednesday. And then the school trip to the museum was a Tuesday.
Tumblr media
“Steve filled in. That’s what understudies are for, right?”
Tumblr media
“Uh, you haven’t heard?
Tumblr media
“Steve isn’t the understudy anymore. You are”
Tumblr media
“She’s tired of you never showing up”
Tumblr media
“So she made Steve Romeo. And trust me, Steve isn’t happy about it either”
Tumblr media
“As i was saying, every algebraic equation requires balance”
Tumblr media
“Not unlike, say, actors in an ensemble!”
Tumblr media
“For instance”
Tumblr media
“Every piece of this equation plays an important role”
Tumblr media
“That is, unless variable X”
Tumblr media
“is a zero”
Tumblr media
“X has no role”
Tumblr media
“X doesn’t show up”
Tumblr media
“X lets the equation down”
Tumblr media
“Then, the entire play-”
Tumblr media
“I mean, equation- falls part!”
Tumblr media
“It becomes impossible!”
Tumblr media
“Mr. Lake”
Tumblr media
“How would you solve this mathematical problem”
Tumblr media
Yeah i’m at a lost.
Tumblr media
“Promoting Steve to Romeo wasn’t your idea. Plus, he’s been trying to leave” “Tell me about it. After class he told me off. Steve told me off. Steve. Of all people”
Tumblr media
“And, honestly, i’d rather be on stage with you”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve seen that face before. Marinette made that face, too, when Adrien touched her shoulder at the end of The Evillustrator.
Tumblr media
New meme template.
Tumblr media
“So, we find another changeling”
Tumblr media
“Stop saying that so loudly”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Do you mind?”
Tumblr media
“Whatever” Like i said, his name is Changeling.
Tumblr media
“Ailment or curse?”
Tumblr media
“Oi, numbskull! I;m supposed to answer it!”
Tumblr media
“But i already did answer it” Wait are Rot and Gut like one troll sharing a body or no?
Tumblr media
“You’re gonna need a gaggletack”
Tumblr media
“Unfortunately, you see, we’re a bit short on those. Very hard to get”
Tumblr media
“But i got a bag of them right here”
Tumblr media
“What in the world? If you’ll excuse us for one moment”
Tumblr media
“Ey, what are you doing? I’m trying to drive up the price over here”
Tumblr media
“I thought we were trying to help these nice lads” Rot doesn’t understand Capitalism. Good boy.
Tumblr media
“Gaggletack?”
Tumblr media
“Rare artifact”
Tumblr media
“Exceedingly rare. An object of great mystery”
Tumblr media
“It’s a horseshoe”
Tumblr media
“Made of pure iron”
Tumblr media
“Why would you put such a precious thing on a horse’s foot?” Great, what other things are “Rare artifacts” to trolls?
Tumblr media
“Beware. Changelings are swapped with their human counterparts at birth. So, it is likely these troll-pretenders have dwelt amongst you for decades”
Tumblr media
“They could be anyone”
Tumblr media
“Used car salesmen”
Tumblr media
“Tax collectors”
Tumblr media
“Television executives”
Tumblr media
“Donald Trump”
Tumblr media
“Yes, especially Donald Trump”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nope.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nope.
Tumblr media
“Shall i hear more, or shall i speak-”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Steve!”
Tumblr media
“Hey! Who did that? And can i leave the play now?” “No”
Tumblr media
Another new meme template.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nope, nope, and nope.
Tumblr media
“You, uh, try this out on Mr. Strickler?”
Tumblr media
“Come on. You really think he is one?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So close.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Here you go, Mr. Strickler. Here’s your horseshoe back”
Tumblr media
“Thank you, Miss. Nunez, but that belongs to Mr. Lake”
Tumblr media
“Oh. Well that would explain the flying horseshoes” Wait “Flying horseshoes”? You mean Claire noticed the horseshoe that hit Steve earlier?
Tumblr media
“So not going to ask” Jim should look on the bright side of this. Claire touched the gaggletack, that means she’s not a changeling, and that the real reason she invited him to her house was not to secretly kill him. Oh wait. That’s not till later.
Tumblr media
“Claire” “Still here” When people forget you’re here too. Trust me, i know that feeling.
Tumblr media
“You’re still coming home with me, right?”
Tumblr media
“Oh, right!”
Tumblr media
“Claire and i are gonna go too her house... for math stuff”
Tumblr media
Toby is surprised by how that escalated quickly. And it’s not even the second half of season 1 yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Series creator, director of The Shape of Water, and the man that said “Monster Fucker Rights” Guillermo Del Toro. Voicing a dentist.
Tumblr media
“For the glory of Merlin”
Tumblr media
“Daylight is mine to make babies ogle”
Tumblr media
“He really likes you” Jim would be a great dad. Wink wink Claire. Wink wink.
Tumblr media
“Wonder what he’s thinking about right now” “No idea what’s going through my brothers mind right now” “I’m going to get kidnapped next episode and you will never see me again for a long time. Goo goo”
Tumblr media
‘Wow, this novocaine you numbed my mouth with is really strong”
Tumblr media
“I can’t even feel my hands”
Tumblr media
“That’s because i didn’t inject you with novocaine, dear”
Tumblr media
“I hit you up with a potent paralyzer”
Tumblr media
“Why would you do that?”
Tumblr media
“Well, it’s not everyday someone comes in with a gaggletack” The moment i saw this.
Tumblr media
“Why don’t i take that, sweetie? It’s not very hygienic” I knew she was a changeling.
Tumblr media
“See, the equation only contains powers of X that are non-negative integers”
Tumblr media
“Does that makes sense”
Tumblr media
“Is it supposed to?”
Tumblr media
“Nah. That’s why it’s called algebra” Algebra never makes sense. It makes Kingdom Hearts make sense. #ReplacealgebrawithKingdomHearts
Tumblr media
“I realized you’ve got a lot more going on than people think”
Tumblr media
“I do”
Tumblr media
“I do?” You may now kiss the bride. Okay guys, Jim and Claire are married.
Tumblr media
“You can’t just write a letter like this and not expect a conversation. If you had written something like “I’ve most likely been slaughtered by a troll” I would’ve said: Understandable, have a nice day” “Wait, really?” “No! You are lucky, you’re cute and everything” “I... Uh... It’s... Wait what?” “Nothing”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“You have to battle monsters?”
Tumblr media
“Saving the world in which we know? What monsters are you battling? Are they fuckable?” “Well- Wait what?” “Uh... What monsters are you battling?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Have some Claire being done with her (Not yet, almost, but not really, not for another season) boyfriend’s bushigal.
Tumblr media
“I mean, we all have stuff we’ve got to go through”
Tumblr media
“But are you in some kind of trouble?”
Tumblr media
“I... Yeah! Metaphoric”
Tumblr media
“I was...”
Tumblr media
“In an exploring stage”
Tumblr media
“Not successful” Let it be known that Claire thinks Jim has depression, if not suicidal tendencies. And i did not get this from the wiki or TvTropes.
Tumblr media
“There’s some sentimental stuff at the end which i thought was... kinda sweet” Umm. Can we read the full letter? I want to know what he said.
Tumblr media
“Really?”
Tumblr media
“If you ever need someone to talk to about “the monsters” you can talk to me”
Tumblr media
“It can be our secret” Yeah. There are going to be a lot of secrets you two will be sharing. Also, you two could’ve kissed here as well. But whatever you tried i guess.
Tumblr media
“Halt, changeling!”
Tumblr media
“Or else my giant friend will tear you limb from limb!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Maybe later” These things always happens.
Tumblr media
“Oh, it burns!”
Tumblr media
“Oh, it’s just a painting” Paintings don’t kill trolls confirm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Huh. After an entire episode of using it on everyone, and making me think it didn’t work, it actually does work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“What’s that?” “Laughing gas”
Tumblr media
*Laughs in Troll*
Tumblr media
“Laughs in Troll*
Tumblr media
“Hello? Wait how did you get my number?”
Tumblr media
“Hey! What’s up, Nunez?”
Tumblr media
“Hey Colby”
Tumblr media
“Someone named Woby?” Claire can’t remember Toby’s name.
Tumblr media
“Fighting monsters again?”
Tumblr media
“Who are you, Jim Lake” Claire is getting sus.
Tumblr media
Imagine walking into this.
Tumblr media
“Perish, you worm!” “Wait, before you kill me, i have something to ask. You know Nomura, right?” “Yes” “Well she has a history with a troll named Draal. Do you know what their history is?” “No, this is the first time i’m hearing about it” “Oh, okay. Thank you. You can die now” “You’re welcome. Wait what?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Do you have some magic artifact that can clean this mess?”
Tumblr media
“Yes. I believe it’s called a Tobias” Translation: “Clean it yourself”
Tumblr media
“It appears Nomura has gotten her way”
Tumblr media
“Another changeling has been chosen”
Tumblr media
“And look who it is” “Enrich? Enquran? Enquin?” “Oh, for the love of. It says Enrique!” “Oh. Who’s that?” “Claire Nunez’s little brother!” “Which one is Claire again?” “The one you haven’t met!” “Well no wonder i don’t know who that is. I never met them”
Tumblr media
Anyone is a changeling. Maybe i’m a changeling.
So who’s the worst babysitter? Jim or Marinette?

His Name (demon!Dean Winchester x Reader)
This is a submission for the immensely talented @fvckingavengers ‘ quarantine writing challenge. Also, I’d like to credit @angelkurenai since her soulmate AU imagines provided the main idea for this fic.
My prompt for inspiration was:
You’re all I need when I’m holding you tight / If you walk away I will suffer tonightI found a man I can trust / And boy, I believe in us / I am terrified to love for the first time / Can’t you see that I’m bound in chains? / I finally found my way / I am bound to you - Bound to You by Christina Aguilera
Summary: Nobody knew why or how, but on their thirteenth birthday every person on planet Earth would start feeling this burning sensation on their left lower arm, which intensifies as the day carries on. By the time the sun goes down, the burning sensation would leave a scar, forming a name. It’s believed to be the name of the person one belongs with. The letters on your skin spell out Dean Winchester.
Warnings: angst, mild swearing
Word count: 3.275-ish
Tumblr media
Sam Winchester is staring intensely on the map in the War room as if he watched it closely enough, it would show where his brother went from the last place he’d been spotted at. Sam is tired beyond words – he has spent every waking hour searching for Dean, even though he is not sure that the demon curing ritual would work on a Knight of Hell.
„You know we’re gonna find him, right?” Cas speaks up, making Sam jump a little.
„Cas... didn’t see you there... Uhm, sure, I know. It’s just harder than I thought.” his words don’t really comply with his facial expression.
„Well, I do not know if this is helpful, but Crowley sent me a photo a few minutes ago with a text saying ’Show this to Moose’. It depicts a woman I have never seen before.” he hands Sam the phone.
„Oh my God!” Sam’s eyes light up with excitement. „Why haven’t I thought of that?!”
„Thought of what? I think I’m in the dark here, Sam.”
But Sam is too busy looking for something in his pockets to answer. A couple of seconds later a familiar rattle indicates he found his car keys and he claps Cas on the shoulder.
„We have a long drive ahead of us, buddy.”
Tumblr media
It‘s 2. a.m. on a Thursday night, you are wiping the bar counter with a cloth. Nothing out of the ordinary happened all evening. You started your shift around 6 p.m. at the local bar, only the regulars came in. The air was heavy with the scent of liquor and cigarette smoke. Even the old jukebox in the corner and the clatter of billiard balls sounded pretty much the same as every night.
Just as you’ve finished wiping and start washing the glasses, the main door opens then closes slowly with a squeak.
„I’m sorry but were closed! Try tomorrow, pal.” you say without looking at the newly arrived guest. It’s not a rare phenomenon that someone wants to stick around for a couple more drinks after closing time, so you don’t suspect anything. Not until the person begins talking, anyway.
’Really? I thought you’d make an exception for an old friend...”
Hearing Sam Winchester’s voice makes your blood run cold, numbing you to an extent that the glass you are holding slips out of your grasp and shatters to a dozen pieces on the floor.
„Sam...” despite your best efforts you can’t muster anything other than his name.
„I mean, I was hoping you’d be excited to see me, Y/N, but breaking glasses is not necessary. Or safe.” he chuckles, sitting down on a bar stool.
„Shut up, smartass!” you intend to look serious, but a smile creeps on your face, nevertheless.
There’s a long moment of silence. Neither of you want to spoil the joy of reunion so you just look at one another, taking in how the other has changed over the years. You pour two scotches and finally Sam clears his throat.
„I see you’re still covering up his name.” he states, referring to your bracelets that hide most of your left lower arm.
Oh, right. His name. Frankly, you tend to forget about those words burnt in your skin quite easily.
Nobody knew why or how, but on their thirteenth birthday every person on planet Earth would start feeling this burning sensation on their left lower arm, which intensifies as the day carries on. By the time the sun goes down, the burning sensation would leave a scar, forming a name. It’s believed to be the name of the person one belongs with. The letters on your skin spell out Dean Winchester.
You can still picture the day you got it crystal clearly.
It was around 10 p.m. when it finished burning and you were able to read it. Your father’s face turned to an ashy color and he drove you to Bobby Singer’s house where the Winchesters were staying at the time. Hearing an engine die, Bobby and John came out to see who the unexpected visitors were.
“Stay in the car!” your father ordered through gritted teeth as he got out and you obeyed.
John smiled when he recognized him, but his smile soon turned to a painful grimace – courtesy of your father’s amazing left hook.
“What the hell, man?!” he shouted in disbelief, wiping the blood off his face with the back of his hand. Bobby was visibly indecisive whether to stop the fight or let it play out.
“I could ask you the very same question, Winchester!” your father bellowed in response.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
“I’m talking about the name that formed on my little girl’s arm, John! You have some dark connections, you must’ve got something to do with it!”
“It’s Dean, isn’t it?” you could see the epiphany on his face even in the poor light that filtered through Bobby’s kitchen window. “Look, pal... you and I both know damn well that this cannot be controlled.”
A long silence ensued. Only the crickets could be heard.
“Ever since my girl’s name showed up on your boy’s arm, I prayed every single night for it to be a mistake. For her to get a different name when the time comes, and you know I don’t believe in God, John!” your father’s voice cracked. “I prayed for her to get the name of a lawyer, a doctor or a dentist… somebody that’ll provide for her. And she got a hunter. Out of seven billion people, she got a hunter… I don’t want her to end up like Mary, or her Mom.”
John took a step closer and squeezed your father’s shoulder.
“Dean will take good care of her, I promise.”
You banish the memory as quickly as you can. The only thing you’re thankful for is the fact that none of your dads lived long enough to see how much of a lie John’s promise would prove to be.
“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t cover it up.” you answer Sam coldly and he shoots you an apologetic look.
“What about yours? Have you found your, uhm... what’s her face… Eileen Leahy?” your pronunciation earns a genuine smile from him.
“No, not yet. I’m starting to think she’s a myth.”
“Well then, she’s the luckiest myth in this whole damn world, I can tell you that much.”
You down your drink in one gulp and decide to ask what’s been bothering you ever since he set foot in the bar.
“Alright, Sam, honest talk. Why are you here? What’s up? I gave you this address for emergencies and the fact that we’re having a face-to-face conversation right here, right now is a bad sign in my book.”
He looks like he’s contemplating the way to present the situation to you, but you’re having none of it.
“No need for sugarcoating, hot stuff, just spill it.”
“Dean’s a demon.”
You’re not sure if you’ve heard it right or the scotch you’ve just drunk was spiked.
“Excuse me?”
“Dean’s a demon. He died with the Mark of Cain on his arm and he turned into a Knight of Hell. Gone rogue. I want to fix him, but you know Dean... it’s damn hard to find him when he doesn’t wanna be found.” he flashes you a smile but when you don’t replicate it, he continues “I’m here because he’s here, Y/N. Based on my intel, he’s been visiting this bar to see you. Will you help me cure him?”
With a blank stare you pour yourself another drink, now wishing for it to be spiked.
Tumblr media
The next day after closing you don’t get into your car immediately; you decide to light a cigarette first. Sam’s words are still echoing in your ears. A demon? And he’s been visiting the bar to see you? Why the hell would he do that? You’re about to stub the remainder of your cigarette when you hear his voice from behind you.
“I always thought you looked incredibly sexy when you smoked, darlin’. Turned me on so much.”
You spin around on your heels just to bump straight into Dean’s chest. He grabs hold of your arms to steady you. His touch gives you goosebumps, but you compose yourself swiftly. You cannot allow him to see the effect he still has on you, even after everything that happened.
“I know, Dean, you made it clear quite a few times with your actions… what I don’t know, however, is the reason behind your little visit... so, a fucking explanation would be nice. But first, let go of me!”
“That’s such an ugly word from such a pretty mouth… and to be honest, I think you know damn well what I’m doing here. A birdy tells me Sammy paid you a visit and I doubt that he didn’t share a few things about me, Y/N. As for letting you go… sorry, no can do.” he smirks.
“What do you mean ‘no can do’, Winchester?!” you ask sharply, panic rising withing you.
“Well, more precisely, I don’t want to. I’ve missed you.” he leans in closer to your face “And frankly, I don’t want you to put those engraved demon cuffs on me that peek from your back pocket, sweetie.” he whispers against your lips.
“Okay. How ‘bout the ones Sam is about to put on you?” you whisper back, causing him to furrow his brows in confusion and lean away. This gives you enough space to headbutt him and he automatically stumbles a step backwards, allowing Sam to cuff him from behind.
With united forces you manage to hustle Dean into the trunk of your car.
“You know, demon or not, it’s nice to know some things never change. You’ve always let your dick do the thinking instead of your brain.” you tell him condescendingly before closing the trunk.
Tumblr media
When Dean wakes up in the Men of Letters’ dungeon restrained, at first, he’s perplexed. Then as realization slowly hits him, his face becomes distorted with fury and he starts wriggling in an attempt to break free, but he doesn’t succeed. A frustrated, unhuman-like growl leaves his throat. You watch this with undeniable pleasure.
„Mornin’, sunshine!” you greet him jovially.
There’s a short silence as he watches you prepare some syringes on the nearby iron table.
„So, you’re the one who’s gonna do it, huh? Or at least try...” he says arrogantly.
„Yup!”
„Now that’s funny ’cause you see I thought you hated needl-„ but you don’t let him complete his sentence as you pierce your skin faster than he could finish it. Your blood fills up the syringe in no time.
You walk over to him and sit on his lap in a straddling position.
„I do hate needles, Dean.” You admit „Kudos for remembering. But I’m pretty sure that you’ll hate what comes next even more than I hate them and that makes it worth it.”
Before he could react, you stab him in the neck with the syringe, completely emptying its content into his artery. The unhuman growl breaks out once again, but this time it turns into manic laughter.
„Wow, that was exciting!” he exclaims as his eyes turn black „Almost as exciting as Jo holding me at gunpoint when we first met. But just almost... You know, there were times I wished it was her name on my arm instead of yours.”
„Interesting. Because there were times I wished it was your brother’s name on mine, but I guess we can’t always get what we want, now can we?” you shrug and walk back to the table, not minding Dean’s pitch-black stare. He thought he could hurt you since Jo was your best friend, but you manage to hit closer to home.
You sit down on a chair, place your legs on the table and put your headphones on.
„What are doing?” Dean asks, clearly upset.
„You didn’t seriously think I was gonna listen to your annoying blabber until the next shot, did you?” he opens his mouth to reply but you turn on the music on your phone and start lip-syncing to ’Dream on’ by Aerosmith.
Tumblr media
In the following four hours you administer the next four shots, each at every clock turn. Dean says something insulting each time and you try to ignore him each time - with more or less success.
“Alright, hot stuff, time for the sixth shot!” examining your arm you realize it starts resembling to a needle pillow, but you draw another fix for him all the same.
This time he appears calmer. He’s not trying to pull his head away or even bite you like at some previous occasions. No shouting or growls either. You can see he started sweating, the small drops glisten on his skin like illuminated diamonds. Could the ritual actually be working?
You’re halfway back to the table when he calls you by the nickname he gave you, forcing you to turn back.
“I just want you to know I admire you. I really do, Y/N. Seeing you put this much effort into this makes me wish I put more in our relationship.” he shoots you a sad, crooked smile.
“Careful, Dean. If you don’t stop attempting to manipulate my emotions, I’m gonna punch you in the face. Again. But this time harder.” you warn him.
“I’m not toying with you. I honestly wish.”
“Well it’s kind of too late for that, isn’t it?” you take a step closer to him and pull up the bracelets on your arm. “See these words? They are the sole reason I’m here and doing this. Okay?”
“Who are you trying to fool, sweet thing? Me or yourself?”
“Shut up, asshole.”
Your hands tremble when you get back to the table and put the headphones on. You feared this moment would come and here it is. He’s trying to get under your skin. And it’s working.
Tumblr media
Later on when you approach him with the seventh shot, he tilts his head to the side, offering his neck.
“Go on.” he encourages you and you take the opportunity. The ferocious, invincible being Sam chained down is nowhere to be seen – a broken man with beautiful green eyes looks longingly at you instead.
“There’s one more to go and you’ll be your annoying self again, hot stuff.” you tell him softly, relenting a little.
“And you?”
“I’ll be on my way to the farthest place from here.” you decide to tell him the truth, which seems to render him speechless for a minute.
“Why do you hate me so much, Y/N?” I mean, I know I’ve never been the high definition of an awesome boyfriend, trust me, but the amount of resentment I sense baffles me.” he asks, sounding genuinely intrigued.
The ball of uneasiness in your stomach grows two sizes in the span of a minute.
“You’ve lost your right to ask such personal questions four years ago, Winchester. You’ve lost it when you left that letter on the kitchen counter, and you walked out on us!” you say in a strained voice.
Suddenly, all the memories you‘ve worked so hard to suppress flood back in.
When Sam jumped in the pit, Dean was lost. His self-destructive behavior foreshadowed a gruesome end and you just couldn’t let him spiral down like that. You made arrangements and got out of the life. Rented a house in the countryside and started living like a normal couple. Beforehand, your relationship was stormy to say the least, but settling down steadied it a lot. Everything was picture perfect for about a year - then you found that damn letter when you arrived home from work. Dean explained in it that Sam was alive, and he needed some time to figure stuff out. You didn’t even get the chance to tell him what you learned that day… and this was the last straw. You never contacted Dean Winchester again, nor did you speak to him directly. Your liaison was Sam up until that night in the bar’s parking lot.
Dean’s voice brings you back to reality.
“My brother came back from the dead… I was confused, Y/N. Just like I wrote, I needed time! After a while I was trying to reach out to you, but you refused to even-“he stops mid-sentence “Wait a minute… walked out on you… as in… plural?”
You nod mechanically and his eyes widen.
“Wha-what happened?” he chokes out eventually.
“I was pregnant. Then miscarried. Don’t worry about it.”
Is that really a teardrop running down his cheek, or are you imagining things?
“Don’t worry about it?” he raises his voice in disbelief. “That’s all you’re gonna say about it?!”
“I don’t want to say anything else, Dean. Because if I pull on that thread again, my mind will go to a dark, lonely place and I think I deserve better than that.”
“Goddamnit…” he exhales loudly, then continues “When all of this is over, I want you to stay.”
“Beg your pardon?”
“I want you to stay with me. Here. I want a clean slate, a-a new beginning.”
You can’t comprehend what’s happening. One minute you were curing your ex-boyfriend from demonism, and the other he wants to start things over despite your history together.
Instead of replying, you fill up the last syringe and administer the eighth shot quickly, then deliver the required incantation. Just as you finish, Sam enters the dungeon and you run past him straight to your car. You open the door but before you could sit in somebody closes it from behind. You don’t have to turn around to know who it is, but you do it anyway. Dean takes your left arm and reveals his own name.
“I remember the night you got this thing. I was in the house when you and your dad arrived at Bobby’s and I witnessed the whole ordeal. I know that ‘til now I did a crappy job keeping the promise my dad made to yours but give me one last chance to do it right, okay?”
You look away, trying to blink back a few tears that want to escape your eyes deperately.
“I don’t know, Dean…”
He gently grasps your chin to make you face him.
“You know, when Sam gave me your message saying you don’t need me anymore, I thought – fine. If you don’t need me, I don’t need you, simple as that. But it was a lie. I only realized how big when I became a Knight of Hell… I enjoyed killing, Y/N. I enjoyed killing so much that it scared the crap out of me. But all this darkness and anger brought on by the mark alleviated one night when I accidentally stopped at that bar and saw you…”
“Damn, Winchester, are we having a chick-flick moment here?” you ask, trying to take the edge off the situation while wiping your eyes.
“Yeah…I guess we are. But don’t tell anyone ‘cause it would ruin my reputation.” he whispers the last part.
You scoff loudly.
“What reputation are you talking about, exactly? I think you lost every bit of it back in the parking lot when I kicked your demon ass.”
“Oh, well, I guess you’re right, sweet thing.” he admits with a breathy laughter.
“As for a second chance… fine.  But fail to keep that promise once more and I’ll be gone for good. Understood?”
At first a look of genuine surprise spreads on his face but it soon gets switched up by gratitude. He places a feather light kiss on your lips as confirmation.
Truth be told, you could never leave him just as he could never leave you – at least not permanently. No matter the pain and the misery, you belong with each other. Your souls are bound by an invisible lace that nothing can tear apart.

Could you do a fix where one of them goes the dentist please? You're an amazing writer.
This ask freaking haunted me. I can not tell you how many times my family or friends asked me what was wrong and I sobbed out “how am I supposed to write a story about them going to the DENTIST? What spin can I put on this? How has my life come to this?”
(Don’t let that keep you from ever sending in asks tho. I will write whatever stories you request, no matter how vague/detailed the prompt is. A little bit of challenge/emotional turmoil is necessary for the creative process.)
Words Aren’t Always Needed
Day 6 of 12 Days Of Prompts
Length: 2.5k
Summary: After a bad reaction to painkillers administered by his dentist, Dan loses the ability to speak for a few days. Which wouldn’t be that big of a deal if they didn’t have plans, including an important business meeting and going to the Star Wars premiere.
Or, the one where Dan loses his voice and Phil has to interpret for him like an extended, inappropriately timed game of charades.
TW: For light (but semi-frequent) cussing
Dan certainly had his peculiarities. One of which being that he actually enjoyed going to the dentist.
Well, most of the time.
Daniel Howell, as in danisnotonfire from YouTube, as in ‘Dan and Phil’ Dan, was slightly different than many people due to his high tolerance for pain. This meant that he didn’t mind small bumps or bruising and that he seldom took painkillers unless they were really needed. It also meant that going to the dentist every six months wasn’t nearly as uncomfortable an experience as it was for others. Dan always left with his teeth feeling fresh and clean. What was the harm?
That was on a normal trip to the dentist, however.
This specific trip to the dentist was supposed to be no different. Dan would go, the dentist would poke around for a while, there’d be a little scrapey scrapey, then Dan would get a free toothbrush and be sent on his way. And Dan was an absolute slut for free toothbrushes. But instead, he found himself reclined in the dentist’s chair as the man towered over him, tapping the side of a needle with his knuckle. “This will make you go numb for the procedure. When the medicine wears off, your voice might still be slurred for a few hours, but should recover relatively quickly.”
The dentist lied. Because after the ‘relatively quick procedure’ was over, Dan’s voice wasn’t slurred, it was gone. When the dentist asked him to say something, all that came out was a squeak.
The dentist frowned. “That’s not right.”
No fucking shit, Dan thought, trying to avoid glaring at the doctor as he inspected his mouth and throat to see what the issue was. Fifteen minutes later, and Dan was sent out the door with the explanation of 'the numbing medicine seems to have had a small unexpected side effect. While uncommon, this has happened before, and your voice should likely return within the next few days.’
And, to top it all off, they were out of free toothbrushes.
So Dan was left with no voice, the lower half of his face still numb, and a goody bag with only floss in it. Floss.
Dan managed to get in a cab and hand him his phone with his address typed into it- his phone was on 7% battery, because God absolutely hated him- and was sent on his way. He was already almost home when he remembered to text Phil, and let him know what had happened.
To Phil: The dentist was horrible. He screwed up the numbing solution and now I’ve lost my voice for the next few days.
To Dan: Aww, I know how excited you were to goI’m sorry the dentist didn’t fulfill all of your scrapey dreams But you lost your voice? What about the event tomorrow?
And that’s how Dan ended up sitting in the backseat of a cab, banging his head against the window, because Fuck, they had plans tomorrow and how was Dan supposed to do anything when he couldn’t even speak?
—-
Phil was waiting for him when he got home.
He laughed when he saw Dan. “Is your face still numb? You look a little, um…” he didn’t need to finish his sentence.
Dan managed his best seriously, Phil expression and flicked his friend the middle finger before heading to his room to charge his phone.
That night was Phil’s turn to make dinner, which was good because otherwise they weren’t going to fucking eat, were they? Unfortunately, by then the painkillers had completely worn off and Dan’s jaw hurt to move too much, so he was unable to eat the fajitas. Finally, taking sympathy on him, Phil stopped making fun of him for thirty seconds so he could get Dan some applesauce.
“The shoes I ordered came in!“ Phil said when Dan was settled in with his applesauce and spoon. All of their normal spoons were dirty, so Phil had given him a decorative tea spoon that someone had given him. It was about half the size of a normal spoon and made Dan want to crawl under his duvet and never come out.
Still, Dan managed to give Phil a mildly interested look. Okay, that was a lie. But he did manage to not scowl at him, which was an improvement.
"They’re really cool Dan, they’re gold and like, scaly-” he giggled at Dan’s expression. “And shiny. Really shiny. Actually, they’re not gold, they’re more of a yellowish, copperish, I’m just going to keep talking because it’s not like you can interrupt me, and they fit really well…”
Dan set his tiny spoon on the table and picked up the cup of applesauce, bringing it to his face and trying to down it like a shot. Instead, a single glob fell out and went down the wrong pipe, resulting in Dan almost choking to death which would have been just awful, really, he wouldn’t accept the warm embrace of death at all on a day like this.
Dan was done with his applesauce after that. In fact, he decided then that he was done with that day in its entirety, and with a small salute to Phil, Dan headed off to his room to scroll on the Tumbs for a while and try to forget the day he’d had.
—-
The next day, Dan woke up and had almost forgotten about his loss of voice.
He went about his morning routine as always, scrolling on Tumblr for a while before getting up and making himself get ready for the day. His face was back to normal, which was good. Dan put on some of his nice-ish clothes and went to grab breakfast.
"Hey Dan, is your voice better?“ Phil asked when he saw him.
And Dan. Dan actually yipped. A full blown, injured puppy yip. And Phil gave him this look, like he was wondering if Dan had just been possessed or if he’d stepped on the LEGO Phil figurine again (which happened far more often than you would think, seeing as Dan’s LEGO figurine never fell off their whiteboard. Dan believed there was a conspiracy.)
Dan tried to explain himself, but all that came out was a squeak.
"I guess that’s a no,” Phil reasoned. “How are we supposed to even go to the things today? Should you just stay home?”
Dan shrugged, looking at Phil pointedly, like you should be able to figure this out because I don’t know.
Phil scratched the back of his head. “Well… you might as well come? I mean, you’re going to the Star Wars thing anyways-” Dan nodded vigorously “-so it’d probably be offensive if you skipped the meetings.”
Dan sighed, which he was still able to do just fine. He nodded and went to get his shoes, pouting all the way.
—-
In the car on the way to their meetings, Dan and Phil texted each other back and forth, even though they were sitting right next to each other.
They got to the official-looking office building and Dan climbed out of the cab as Phil paid for them. They walked in together, with Phil taking the lead slightly and Dan trailing behind, his hands stuffed in his jacket and his eyes on the floor. It was strange how the loss of his voice seemed to affect the rest of him; no one was trying to take to him, yet he still felt as though he wasn’t able to communicate properly.
They got to the queue. A chirpy seeming receptionist (who’d probably been there since five that morning and drunken her entire body weight in coffee) greeted them, letting Phil in with a chirpy “Floor 5!” But when Dan tried to follow, the turn dial didn’t let him through. “Sorry, I don’t think there’s anyone else authorized to go upstairs? If you’d like to take a seat, I can check.”
At this point, Dan had absolutely mastered his 'I’m so fucking done’ face, which he proceeded to show the receptionist.
And Phil hadn’t noticed. He’d kept walking along, turning a corner and was out of sight, and Dan couldn’t fucking yell to get his attention, because, well, he couldn’t fucking speak.
Dan aggressively gestured and pointed for the next thirty seconds before Phil came back, looking a little embarrassed. “Um, sorry. He’s with me.”
Damn fucking right I am, Dan thought as the receptionist apologized and let him through. He was still glaring as they started walking away.
"Sorry about that,“ Phil admitted sheepishly.
And Dan was so done with not being able to speak that he actually stopped walking, pulling Phil to a halt with him, and grabbed his shoulder, pulling him so close that Dan’s lips were almost touching his ear, and Dan managed to whisper in the quietest, raspiest voice imaginable, "Lit-rally fuck everything.”
Phil giggled, made a bad innuendo, etc etc. Dan smacked him on the arm. And they kept walking.
The meeting was, surprisingly, not as miserable as Dan expected. They came in and shook hands with everyone, Phil explaining that Dan couldn’t speak while Dan tried to smile instead of grimace. Then they got down to business.
This particular meeting had to do with new mercy that was to be released. It involved a lot of technical stuff, which, depending on the topic, Phil was either very good at or completely oblivious to. He and Dan usually split up the duties of remembering important things.
"We need to approve the styles of shirts as well. Did you have some in mind?“
Phil looked to Dan. "Um…”
Dan gestured like go on, you should know this. Phil just widened his eyes, to which Dan rolled his eyes in response. He gestured at his arms, tapping his wrist.
"A watch?“
Dan pinched the air above his wrist as if tugging at invisible cloth.
"Oh, long sleeves. And…”
Dan tapped on his shoulder, right where the cut off of short sleeves would be.
"And short sleeves.“
"What style of short sleeves?” One of the official looking business people asked.
Dan cupped the air under his chest, as if pushing up invisible boobs.
"Girl ones,“ Phil translated. "Like… you know those tighter fitting shirts that girls sometimes wear?”
"You mean a fitted T-shirt?“ One of the people supplied.
Dan nodded. "Yes!” Phil said. “And…”
Dan flexed his arms like a bodybuilder.
"Muscle shirts?“
He shook his head, pointing under the table to his crotch.
Phil looked a little uncomfortable. "Dan, I don’t think that’s exactly appropriate…”
Dan huffed. Finally, he reached over under the table and pulled Phil’s jacket up a little, grabbing onto the edge of his T-shirt.
"And normal T-shirts,“ Phil supplied. "Um… unisex ones.”
Dan nodded, giving him both thumbs up.
—-
Phil adjusted his bow tie in the mirror. There was a knock on his bedroom door, and he walked over quickly, opening it to reveal a suave looking Dan decked out in a completely white suit with a black dress shirt underneath. Dan leaned against the door, biting his lip, showing off his ensemble for Phil to admire.
"You look very dashing,“ Phil agreed, because though Dan hadn’t said anything aloud, his feelings towards the outfit were made clear with the prideful glint in his eyes.
Dan nodded in a you too. He stepped forwards, admiring Phil’s golden shoes.
"Pretty snazzy, right? I kind of based the whole outfit around them.” Phil tugged at his lapels, which were patterned with golden swirls. The rest of his suit was a formal black, save for a white dress shirt underneath.
Dan nodded in agreement, moving closer and adjusting Phil’s bow tie for him wordlessly. Phil had been wearing them for longer, but Dan had more of an eye for detail.
Wordlessly, they grabbed their phones and wallets and headed out front, Phil stepping into the road and catching the attention of a cabbie almost immediately. He stopped, and Phil climbed in, followed closely by Dan. They sat so close their legs touched without thinking. That’s just how they were comfortable.
It took a long time to get to the Royal Albert Hall where the premiere was being shown, mostly due to traffic. It was a big event, and if you weren’t going as a guest, you were going as press. Then, when they finally got there, they had to wait in line for ages just to get in, as everyone had to have their bags searched, because the princes were there, screeeeee!
"We could play i-spy!“ Phil suggested in excitement. Dan tried to let him down easily, gesturing at his throat like um, how? Then, when Phil insisted they try and make it work, they tried, and it didn’t work.
Dan pointed at himself, gesturing that he’d go instead, and Phil could guess. He scanned the room, his eyes locking on a hideous white dress shirt with polka dots on it. He nodded, pointing at his white jacket.
"It’s white,” Phil translated. Dan nodded in agreement, and Phil scanned the area.
"Those shoes that lady is wearing-“
Dan shook his head.
"That man’s white shirt.”
Dan saw where he was pointing, and shook his head again, smiling a little smugly.
"Is it one of the stormtroopers?“
Dan widened his eyes, peering over the heads of people to where Phil was pointing. He squeeeeed in excitement, one of the only noises he could still make, ignoring the looks he was sent.
"You have to take a picture with them!” Phil encouraged.
Dan gave him his trademarked 'duh’ expression, though this time, it came with a genuine smile. He puffed out his jacket a little, like you think I wore this for any other reason?
———-
They got the picture with the Storm Troopers, even though in order to do that they had to pose for the press, which both of them tried to avoid as much as possible. It was still sort of funny to think that people were actually interested in pictures of them, but Dan sort of doubted anyone in the press actually knew who they were. They just knew they were snazzy looking guests and that they must be important enough to have been invited to the event, so they didn’t question it.
Then, finally, they got to see the movie. And almost the whole time, they whispered back and forth, Dan’s whisper even quieter than Phil’s, but he still understood it. They’d been best friends for long enough that sometimes, words weren’t completely necessary. They could interpret each other’s expressions and general excitement almost as easily as they could interpret each other’s words.

My Diagnosis
My diagnosis was one of the scariest moments of my life. I remember everything about that day.  The day is pretty much stuck as freeze frame images in my brain.  When you hear you have cancer you automatically think, “ will I die?” Lucky for me, it wouldn’t be that type of fight.
First and foremost I want to speak to the importance of regular check-ups and doctors visits. I , like most men did not frequently visit my doctor or dentist. For me it was about healthy eating and frequent exercise. I believed that as long as I did those things there was no need to go to the doctor. When I was younger I also didn’t have medical insurance, so check ups were not even something on my radar. Unfortunately as I got older i kept the same habits even though I was able to obtain affordable coverage. With that said, make sure you take check-ups seriously.
I honestly thought none of this could happen to me. I was a track athlete in college (albeit a frequently hurt one), I had completed two half marathons, and I am a vegetarian.
Back to my diagnosis. I originally started by experiencing two things, pain in my front teeth and shifting of my teeth. The pain was not overwhelming, instead it was more of a dull pain similar to a toothache. I started to notice the shift about 2 months after the pain started. The shift was strange. It made one of my teeth appear to be longer than the other. I am someone who was born with two big front “buck” teeth so the slightest shift was very noticeable. At first I could slightly tell and didn’t think anything of it. I never got my wisdom teeth removed so i figured they were pushing my teeth into each other. As i started to keep putting off appointments, I noticed the shift becoming worse and worse. My tooth had began to shift about a full centimeter. After finally getting some time away from my job, I decided to schedule a doctors visit.
I scheduled the appointment to get my wisdom teeth removed and inquire about braces.  When i walked in, the first thing i did was show the dentist the shift and explain the pain. She agreed that it may be my wisdom teeth shifting so she started an X-ray. After the X-ray the dentist sat me down and began a cold test. The cold test was a metal rod that had this chilling fluid on it. The dentist proceeded to test each one of my teeth, to try to see if something was rotten. After testing about 3 teeth, she came to the three teeth closes to the front of my mouth. I did not give any type of response when she placed the metal rod on those teeth. She must have tried for 5 minutes to get a response, and nothing happened. This was the first sign.
I could now tell she was worried. She said to me that those three teeth had died. They had no feeling. Next she started feeling the roof of my mouth. This is when she made the discovery. She asked me, “ do you feel this lump behind your front teeth.”  I honestly hadn’t felt any type of lump. She began to explain to me that the lump was pretty significant in size and it was causing the shift in my teeth
She then showed me the X-ray and told me the lump had eaten away at the bone connecting those dead teeth. After about 20 minutes of more tests and X-rays she directed me to another dentist with more experience. When i asked her what she thought it could be, she said it could be just a cyst that needed to be drained.  This was the first time I was told it was NOT cancer.I left that office and went to the next dentist, in my gut something was telling me she was wrong.
At dentist number 2 things were different. This dentist was older, and so was his practice. He introduced himself as semi-retired and taking very few new patients. We instantly got to work dissecting the lump. The dentist laid me back and gave me some numbing medicine. He was going to need to try and burst the cyst. He tried hard to drain it out. The process of getting his tools under my gums was pretty painful. I could feel him trying to peel under them to drain the lump. The problem was there was nothing to drain. The lump was hard as a rock. I could tell he was too was worried. He then explained to me that he would like to do a biopsy. The biopsy was easy, he cut the lump open and took a tissue sample. The sample was about the size of a dime. They told me it would take about two weeks. For yet another time I was told, “ Do not worry you are too young and healthy for it to be cancer. You don’t drink or do drugs so you will be fine.”
The next two weeks were nerve racking. I was Googling everything I could to find a diagnosis. I looked at pictures of oral cancer and I didn’t have any of the symptoms.  My wife told me to stop looking stuff up, I was only going to make it worse on myself. About 5 days after the biopsy the dentist called me in to see him. I was relieved to finally move on from everything. That day my wife had a doctors appointment at the same time so I brought my 2 year old son with me.
I can remember how strange it felt going to get my results. It felt like everyone already knew and I was walking the plank on a pirate ship. As soon as I sat down there was about 4 dental assistants in the room. I remember feeling uncomfortable. Then i thought maybe they were there to play with my son. I sat him on my lap and the Dentist walked in. He looked me square in the eye and said, “ Well you have cancer.” Just that simple, no apology, no warm up, no good news/ bad news sandwich, absolutely nothing- it was a straight diagnosis.  Everything literally went slow motion. All i could say was, “ What, What, What, What, and more What?” All the dental assistants were emotional. The girl who did the biopsy had started to cry. All i could think of was the fact that I had my boy in my lap, and that doctors appointment my wife had- was to confirm her pregnancy. I would be the father of another boy in 5 months from that day.
I wanted to go home. I wanted to wake up. I wanted to just be a boy again. I wasn’t ready for  it. I didn’t cry, i was too much in shock to cry.  The dentist was speaking but it all was Charlie Browns teacher. The one thing I did manage to hear, was the word Malignant. That was huge. He told me that it would not spread, it would not kill me. Suddenly I felt a sense of calm. He told me that Ameloblastoma had a very low possibility of spreading to other parts of the body. It had a VERY low probability to take my life. I remember saying, “ Well ok this will be life altering and not life threatening- that is a blessing.” The dentist agreed. He then gave me a referral to University of Michigan Dentistry.
I still was a wreck. The first person I called was my wife. She took it like a champ, she is the strongest person I know. She just asked me if I was ready to fight with her. She gave me strength,  I would see her later that day. My mom took it the worst. I am her only child, and at most turns I have tried to make good choices and have came out ok. She cried hard. She did not take it well. My Dad wasn’t shook, he never is. In his calm corporate manor he made me recount the interaction with the Dentist. He wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to die. He then would begin to research everything he could on Ameloblastoma.
No one knows how Ameloblastoma forms or why someone gets it. Some believe it is from under-developed teeth. However, there is not a clear reason as to why or how it forms. If left untreated depending on your location you can have problems with your sinus or problems with brain. I was lucky. My tumor was located in the front of my mouth. It would not affect my brain, only danger would be contamination of my sinus.
My doctors at U of M are the best. The first day I walked in as a referral, I felt right at home. Everyone from the receptionist to the head surgeon was amazing. My first day there I met the head surgeon in the Maxiillery department. I met every single person who would ever touch my file. All the way to the top, that was huge it made me feel important. Over the next 3 weeks I would undergo CAT Scans and plenty of other tests.  During this time I met my primary dentist Dr. Munz. She may be the nicest person I have met in my entire 32 years of life. She would counsel me on my surgery and the different obturators that I will have. I will speak more about the obturators later. After my 3 weeks, I was told exactly what would happen. I would be losing 6-8 teeth, all of the cartilage, bone, and tissue behind my top lip, and a decent chunk of the roof of my mouth. The surgery would be life changing, But not life threatening. Thank God!

In Medicaid, dental care for adult beneficiaries is optional and is often one of the first benefits eliminated amid state budget constraints. While 47 states and Washington, DC offer some dental benefit to Medicaid-enrolled adults, only 32 cover services beyond emergency care, and only 16 offer comprehensive dental coverage. Inadequate access to dental services can lead to high rates of dental disease, costly oral health-related hospital visits, and missed work days {medicaid.gov}.
This past Friday and Saturday the Mid-South Mission of Mercy held a free dental clinic at Bellevue Baptist Church. Those who do not receive Obama care are without dental and vision insurance.  Activists and organizers work from small donations. A couple of BLMM activists and their family members attended this Free Dental Clinic fo treatment and to evaluate the process.  It was akin to a roller coaster.  Waking up at 3 am to travel to the mega-church all the way to Cordova was the easiest part of the beginning of an epic journey for free dental care.
Standing in line didn’t seem so hard, but for one person who had Lupus, it was challenging time. It was only 2 hours until the doors opened at 6:00 am. I didn’t seem like a long time since it was for a worthwhile cause. When the temperature dropped, significantly and this began not be such a great idea, not to mention there were 497 people who had arrived a few hours before us. Some of them had chairs and had camped out for these free dental services.
Many people were just happy to know that they were in the top 500.  Suddenly, a kind lady passed out arm bands letting us know the first 1200 would be seen.  Overcoming the freezing temperature with Community Coffee, things began to look up. The line was moving forward to a giant heated tent.  As we approached, excitement could be felt by everyone.  Realizing everyone was here for the same reason, swap stories with each other. The friendly chit chatter was interrupted by a disgruntled woman, wanting join the conversation.  She was upset because no one was talking to her.  Many mentally ill people were seeking services, and this situation became frustrating for those who were not.   An elderly man began to talk to the woman, and suddenly the energy outside the church was transformed with positivity.
A man appeared and start requesting that all women with children come with him.  It felt like the scene from the “Titanic” because one woman said, “I should have brought my child.”  As we moved closer to the tent, another man asked all the disabled and elderly people to come with him. Two hours felt like five until a nice lady began passing out breakfast foods, juice, and more coffee.  We were almost to the front of the line of the giant heated tent when an altercation broke out between the Copeland Security employee and a seemingly veteran/mentally ill man.  This was ironic because there was a large police presence.  There should have been people trained to deal such situation. The situation was diffused quickly, but one could only wonder why mentally ill people don’t receive free dental care.
Finally, we made it on the ride inside of the Tent.  One person shouted, “Hallelujah thank you, Jesus.” We were greeted with smiles and welcomes from the Mercy volunteers. We began to thaw out and seated at exactly 8:45 am.  We could only wonder if this would this be worth the wait, as we were asked which services we desired, and were separated by category. They even had an unsure category.
While filling out the paperwork, various volunteers had signs on their shirts that read “Can I pray for you?”  A nice gentleman named Ben Taylor thanked us for coming and added though we were here to get dental service that there were some people who wanna pray for us. Just as we need dental care, we need spiritual care. No one objected.  A gentleman walked up and sat down next to a man and asked: “Do you know if you are going to heaven?”
He replied, “Yes because I do good deeds take care of my family.”
He then told him  “No man will get to heaven unless he believes and confess and admits that Jesus is his Savior, and according to the Bible, GOD LOVES U.”
He went on to tell him that “the consequences of sin are death & that is what separates us from death. So that’s why God sent Jesus, he is alive today.”
He then asked, “Does that make sense to you?”
He said, “Yes, are you ready for him to be your Lord & Savior?”
At that point, I suddenly realized I needed to find a bathroom. They had porta potties, but with the near freezing temperatures, I was not going to be able to use one. On a mission for mercy to make my way into the building, I began to pray that I could get inside a real bathroom without incident.  As I walked to the door a lady with a smile greeted me and asked me where I was going.”I need to use a
“I need to use a bathroom.”  She said, “Come with me, I will show you where it is.” My prayer had been answered.  After relieving myself, I made my way back to the tent feeling like a new person.
She said, “Come with me, I will show you where it is.” My prayer had been answered.  Afterward, I made my way back to the tent feeling like a new person.
Someone spoke on the mic about unity and going to the Lord because he provides all of our needs. Knowing that I needed a root canal, I was shocked to find out that they had dentists performing them onsite.  Walking into Bellevue Baptist building was like a “dental Disneyland.” The first section was for children decorated in superhero pictures.  Volunteers were gracious.  They immediately began taking our vitals, the process of seeing a dentist had begun, but not before someone brought us all lunch. This hospitality sent an illuminating warmth throughout the gigantic gymnasium. After getting our X-rays, we were then sent to have our gums numbed. Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell entered with bodyguards.  He did not interact with the people or his constituents who had been waiting outside all morning but offered a big smile for the cameras as if he were responsible for sponsoring the event.
The hygienist was very gentle and kind. It was reassuring to know that the process was almost over, so we all thought.  After consulting with a dentist, she said, “You’re going to need a root canal, but the tooth was so close to the bone. It may be a waste to do a root canal.”   She assured me the two dentists were the best who would perform my root canal.  Not sure what she meant by that.  The only teeth I had ever had pulled were my wisdom teeth. I had no intention of having any teeth pulled.
I waited another hour because the volunteers were changing shift.  I became anxious and impatient because all I wanted was to fill the chipped hole in my tooth.
The majority of the people receiving services were black folks. The majority of the dentist and professional staff were not black.  In fact, I don’t think I counted more than ten black dentists in the entire building. With such a high demand for dentistry needed why aren’t more blacks aren’t in this field and what programs exist in Shelby County to encourage more black dentist?
My root canal which would have cost $400.00 minus the crown, if I had gotten elsewhere.   I was glad to get a root canal, so I thought.  Michael James, a young black resident, told me he is going to be doing my root canal. Something about his energy was different from everyone else. He didn’t talk to me about Jesus or even offer to pray for me like everyone else. He didn’t even smile.  All of a sudden he tried to put something on my tooth.  The tooth broke. The numbing stuff had worn off I felt the pain. I began to get frantic because he was not gentle like all of the other people.  I was about to cry, but then another man came over and said, “We are not going to be able to save your tooth.” I started to get angry because I didn’t sign up for them to break my tooth or an extraction.  I signed up for a filling and was hoping to get a cleaning if they had time.  If only I had dental insurance and had been getting my teeth cared for on a regular I would not be going through this experience.
Immediately I asked for someone in charge. I came in with a tooth, and I intended to leave with a tooth I didn’t care if it was free. I felt like I had been at the top of the roller coaster and being dropped.  My heart sank, and I began to pray. Two black security guards walked up.  Before they could say anything to me a nice Iranian man came and said, “I will take care of you. Come with me we will have to pull your tooth, but I will personally make sure you leave with a tooth. Because the tooth is broken, it must come out.” I didn’t believe a word he was saying, but he was so nice and convincing, and when he said you are blessed, I knew I could trust him.
We went to another part of the church where impressions for dentures and other moldings were being made. The ride was almost over.  When I saw that they were making teeth in the church.  He made a molding for my teeth and said, “Come with me we now have to take you to surgery.”  I felt helpless but I was willing to follow him to hell as long as he didn’t take me near the guy who was doing the root canals. He then took me to an older dentist who re-numbed my gums. It was like getting on another ride that I knew I shouldn’t be getting on, but I had to according to the Iranian dentist who said I was blessed.  All of a sudden he couldn’t get the tooth out it broke again from the root and then he began asking the assistant to hand him instruments that weren’t big enough next thing I knew my mouth was being hammered.  Literally, he was hammering my tooth.  He said, “You have good bone structure.”  I began to pray because I knew I was going to die at Bellevue Baptist Church.  All of a sudden he said, “you made me sweat, but I got it.”  He began stitching my gum up.  Then he said, “No, I don’t like that one let me re-stitch it.”  He laughed, and I sighed and vowed to never get on this ride again.  Hallelujah, thank you, Jesus. I was ok.

They explained my temporary tooth would be ready the next day by 10 am.  It was time to exit this place they provided me with free pain pills and antibiotics, and I left thinking I have to come back again.  When I arrived at 10 am the next morning, I was greeted by friendly smiling faces and the Iranian dentist Dr. Hassan Bashiri the man in the blue scrubs who had rescued me the day before.  I discovered more about how long he had been doing dental work and felt a sense of pride knowing that he was a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist which is a sub-specialty of dentistry.  Originally from Illinois, he practices in Arkansas but travels all over the world doing God’s work and it had to be divine intervention that brought him to me the day before. He fitted me for my temporary replacement tooth and did not allow me to leave until it was perfect. He said he was a perfectionist.  I told him me too that’s why I had to have a tooth and will be getting a permanent implant at some point.  He reassured that even though this was temporary it would last for years.
When I looked in the mirror I could not tell which tooth was the fake one because it looked identical to the others. I was shocked to know as much pain as I was in the day before that he could put something there even though my mouth had not healed and it looked good.  He said this will keep my teeth from shifting and explained how to care for it until I get a permanent implant. He then sent me to get my teeth cleaned which I really needed. Greeted by Tera another Mission of Mercy Volunteer, she said, “Can I pray for you?”  I did not resist.  Something about all the constant prayer in the past 24 hours was comforting. Almost in tears from the generosity of all these different spirits, I could not allow one negative encounter to form my opinion of this free dental clinic.   We were cold.  They gave us coffee. We weren’t extremely hungry, but they fed us twice.  I needed to use a real bathroom. I was permitted to do so I could maintain my dignity. I was in distress and they comforted me.  My tooth was broken. It was almost fixed by probably one of the best dentist in the world. Dr. Bashiri was right. I am blessed.  The Mid-South Mission of Mercy provided different experiences for each individual this past weekend, and it would behoove other churches to try to offer similar services to the community because they not only saved teeth. They spread love in a city filled with so much distress.  After everything we had been through all we could say was Hallelujah thank you, Jesus.
So how does a free dental clinic relate to black lives matter Memphis?
Dentistry just like social justice work is a challenging field which sometimes requires unconventional tactics to bring about desirable end results. Sometimes we have to hammer so hard. It hurts to get the perfect results.  Sometimes we have to allow strangers to love us and pray for us even if we don’t believe it will work. Sometimes we have to trust a complete stranger who says that we are blessed and know that we can find a solution to a problem. All of the work that was done was to bring us a step closer to the promise land. Many people don’t believe in God or Jesus, but the faith of others is enough to bring us one step closer to our Hallelujah moment.  Sometimes we have to let go of our hurt and fear and allow people who don’t know us to guide us and reshape our opinions.  We must learn to open our hearts, love and trust people even if it hurts. Our legislators also should listen to the need and implement more affordable dental insurance for those who can’t afford it. Memphis is a city full of hate, and if we are not careful it will continue to be passed on to our generations, and if we do better it may be a challenging procedure, but we can overcome each obstacle with patience, love, pain, dedication, and perseverance where we can all reach that Hallelujah thank you Jesus moment.
