the beautiful thing about derry girls is how it made me feel. i laughed of course, it's a comedy. but i cried with them, i loved with them, i got pissed with them, i rolled my eyes at jenny joyce with them. i just felt so involved in their lives, so protective over them, as if they were my friends. it all felt so real, and the fact that a show made me so engaged with only nineteen episodes speaks volumes.

I adore the inclusion of Liam Neeson’s character in the finale for two reasons:

1. The show is the world of these teenagers, so almost everyone they - and we as an extension - interact with is Catholic. So despite the almost cameo nature of the character, he’s really the only Protestant we see. And along with seeing all our main Catholic characters saying “yes, we want peace” we also get to see that same decision - at least that’s how I read his acting while taking off the hat, etc. since we don’t actually see what he marks - from the other side and from a character that is something of the bad guy in his episode part. It’s seeing that both sides wanted this.

2. Just the reality of Neeson himself. He was an 8-year-old Northern Irish Catholic when the Troubles began. He lived through all of it. He was 18 when one of the most violent parts of the Troubles began. He was 20 when Bloody Sunday happened. To include a face that we all know so well is standard cameo practice. But to include this man, who at 46 as an Irish citizen could have stood in one of those polling booths and been faced with that exact decision. That was so much more.

noooo, the ep finishing off on dreams by the cranberries with three generations who’ve known war all their lives hoping for things to get better paralleling the absolute despair of the bombings in season 1… the feeling that childhood is ending with grief when Clare’s dad dies paralleling the feeling of childhood ending on hope… the not wanting to grow up but having to… starting with every girl living their lives but still reunited at the end… don’t touch me im emotional.

Lisa McGee saying that Erin and James would eventually end up together in their 30s is interesting because I just found out yesterday that it took about 30 years for the Good Friday Agreement to happen.

playing teenage kicks was so important on so many levels. yes it's a punk song about teenagers which obviously fits the episode. but also, it was written in the summer of 1977. the undertones were a northern irish punk rock band. they were from derry. and when they released teenage kicks it put derry on the map in the music scene. i just love how much thought goes into every aspect of this show

Derry Girls Finale (Potential Spoilers)

I just watched the Derry Girls finale and... I can't describe how much it moved me. The one-hour special really brought together all the elements that make the show perfect. The characters were our familiar idiots but, this time, the threat of growing up is much more poignant than it has ever been. They struggle, their bonds are tested, but they pull through, because they love each other and they understand each other.

I also think the episode really shows the brilliant humor of Lisa McGee's writing. I was laughing every 30 seconds, and every once in a while she hit me with an emotional scene that made my heart hurt. I particularly loved the many flashbacks and callbacks to other seasons that we had. The fact that so many of our favorite supporting characters were there put the biggest smile on my face.

It's so sad to say goodbye to a show that has meant so much to me. It hurts to say goodbye yo a well writen and fantastic show in a time when there is so much garbage out there, but I'm happy it is ending on its own terms and while it is still good and relevant. And ending it on the GFA, on the verge of a new era for NI and for our characters is perfect. I'm also glad they didn't tell us how everything turned out, so that we can share the kids' uncertainty and hope for the future, because none of us knows what's ahead in our stories.

Thank you, Derry Girls. See you on my infinite re-watches. It's been a pleasure to be moved by you for 4 years. 💚
