so many great bits in derry girls but I really think my favorite might be when they decide to perform a spice girls song for a talent showcase and everything leading up to it implies that it’s going to be an unmitigated disaster like everything else they do but then they get onstage and start performing and everybody’s gobsmacked because they’re all really good

One of the best things about Derry Girls is it's focus on friends and family rather than romance and sex. A bunch of teenagers who are aged 14-18, figuring out their lives, rely on their friends and parents rather than their lover and this is actually close to reality. Coming of age is not entirely about a nerdy girl banging a hot and popular guy or sexy and arrogant guy falling for a kind and sunshine girl. It's apologising to your friend when you hurt them keeping your ego aside, it's embracing the loss of someone together, it's realizing that you won't make big difference but your bit is necessary, accepting that things will not always work out but you've got the support of your family, blood and found.
Surely these teenagers are dumb and get infatuated with every single person who seems cool to them but at the end of the day, they choose friendship. This decision is not because they're mature and are aware of the pressure of choosing a right partner, it's simply because they choose to do what their heart says. They choose people they're used to and comfortable with, who have been their people for a long time, people who they cannot help but love.
A teenager's life is not as sexual as they portray in the media. It's silly. Very silly. Stupid dance competitions, shitty poetries, failed attempt at sports, just passing the class, breaking rules, attending concerts, begging for having a blasting birthday party is what teenage is about. This is accurate representation of teenagers. Romance, please take a backseat for now because we're having the time of our life with our silly friends!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for your gracious presence in this half-witTED TALK..........

DERRY GIRLS SPOILERS AHEAD
I was sat thinking about Gerry on the phone and I realized Deirdre (Michelle's mum) might've been the one to ring him as she's a nurse in the hospital and I doubt Geraldine (Claire's mum) was in any state to make that phonecall. Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah walked with Geraldine at the funeral but Deirdre walked with Granda Joe behind them probably because she felt she'd only upset Geraldine as the hospital could do nothing for Sean - AW FUCK HOW DID I MAKE AN ALREADY HEARTBREAKING EPISODE HURT MORE

Thinking about the final scene of the special again, but specifically in comparison to the end of the very first episode. Because that also ended with the five mains, Mary, Sarah, Gerry, Joe, Anna, Dierdre and one of Clare's parents all gathered in one place for one purpose, too.
But, in the first episode, nobody wanted to be there. They were there because the gang fucked up their detention so badly they looked guilty of killing someone. And now, they're there by choice, making one of the most important political decisions they may ever face. Before, the gang were children to be dealt with and talked over and blamed. Now, they're young adults, their voices heard, their right to speak up finally being taken seriously.
And none of them are the same, either. Erin isn't a brash, showy kid desperate to grow up, frantically writing down everything, however inane, frantically chasing boys who don't care about her. She's a young woman who, after saying one of her most profound speeches, says she'll maybe write it down, who's found someone willing to take his time, who'll challenge her to improve without compelling her to change.
James isn't that confused fish out of water that stepped off the bus, reeling from being dropped into Derry by his mother. He's grown more confident, learned to take things in stride, and grown secure enough in the Irish side of his identity that he feels like he can vote in the Referendum, like he's not just the wee English fella anymore, and he's allowed a say in what happens to the place he calls home.
Clare's no longer the anxious, closeted girl who doesn't want to be an individual on her own. She's out and proud, and, as it turns out, every bit as capable of causing mischief as any of the others under the right circumstances.
And that's not even getting to the adults. Mary's not an overworked stay at home mother anymore, she's a student pursuing an exciting new academic journey. Gerry's become more assertive, especially with Joe. Joe has watched his granddaughters grow, and has proven he's as dedicated to their happiness as he is to that of his daughters time and again, and has shown that for all he's an old man, he's no less open to ideas and accepting of others (just maybe not Gerry, but that seems almost out of habit at this point).
We know now that Dierdre isn't just Michelle's mum- she's the former punk that Michelle got her wild streak from, sure, but she's also the mother of one of the prisoners facing release if the nation votes yes. She's got more skin in this game than most of the other adults we see voting, with far more to consider in this scene than just how best to tell her nephew his mother's ran off without him. And, of course, the biggest change to the adults present in this scene- Geraldine is here instead of Sean. This is another moment he wasn't here to see, to be part of.
And I feel like I can’t make a post about the changes from the start of the show to the end, without mentioning wee Anna. When the show started, she was a baby, being carried around by Joe and her parents. And now she's a little girl, standing on her own two feet, walking into the future. She's gonna grow up to be one of the weans for whom the Troubles will be nothing but a ghost story, and that starts here, in the final scene of the special, with her granda excitedly showing her a piece of paper she's too little to fully understand the meaning of, covered in words she can't even read, but that are gonna make it so the stories her big sister and her parents and the rest of her family tell will be just that, stories.
They've all come such a long way from that first episode, and it makes me emotional.

I’ve decided that Granda Joe steps up almost immediately to make sure Clare has someone when she needs da stuff and sometimes drives her to dates and gives her advice about girls and tells her never to settle for any girl that’s any less perfect than Mary and Sarah’s mother because that’s what she deserves and dammit I’ve made myself cry at 8:30 in the morning.

guys i just had a dream that Mary, Gerry and Joe were cleaning out the attic and they find boxes of stuff that Mary and Gerry had when they were younger.
All the gang where down stairs and Mary and Gerry are really excited to show them pictures of them when they were their ages. (which obviously makes erin cringe)
Gerry finds an old leather jacket he just wear when he was in his late teens/early twenties and gives it james, saying how he would rather someone wear it then collect dust. shocked by the kind gesture james kindly accepts and tries on the jacket. obviously the girls make fun of him and call him a knock off T-bird, but mary shuts them up and tells him that he looks very handsome.
At the bottom of one the boxes is a picture of Mary and Gerry on one of their first dates where Gerry is wearing the leather jacket and Mary is wearing a purple jumper similar to the one erin is wearing.
Orla picks ups the photo and says they look like james and erin. then everyone agrees and they both go really red and get awkward

Sad thing about DerryGirls ending in 1998 is that DESPERATELY need to know Erin’s thoughts on 2005 Pride and Prejudice
And their collective opinions on the Mamma Mia movies

Standing ovation to Derry Girls for creating the scene where Clare comes out of room in the hospital after losing her father and everyone hugs her tightly as if they're trying to absorb some of her pain; all dressed as angels. Maybe that is a reminder for all of us that our guardian angels are not imaginary figures from holy scriptures and place but they are real people around us who might seem to have walked straight out of some idiot planet.
Maybe angels do really exist, walking in human form; fighting with their mom to wear a denim jacket, trying to learn step aerobics, saying motherfucka in every sentence because of a movie they watched recently or holding their pee for an uncomfortable amount of time..........

playing teenage kicks was so important on so many levels. yes it's a punk song about teenagers which obviously fits the episode. but also, it was written in the summer of 1977. the undertones were a northern irish punk rock band. they were from derry. and when they released teenage kicks it put derry on the map in the music scene. i just love how much thought goes into every aspect of this show
