This is Loraine Mponela, a migrant to the UK who works with Stand Up To Racism and is a champion of Status Now 4 All, an organisation that seeks to help refugees and migrants be acknowledged as legal citizens in the UK.

Here she talks about how she survived the long fight to receive status, which she finally received last year (after 10 years of fighting, which maddeningly is short compared to the 20+ years many have to wait).

No more murdering refugees by leaving them to drown on dinghies and small boats in the channel. No more endless waiting living on less than enough to survive without the same rights as other workers, being ruthlessly exploited to fuel essential organisations like the NHS and being neglected and abused by the government at every turn.

Migrants and refugees seeking asylum in the UK have no legal route to do so and if they somehow manage to make it here they are abused, dehumanised, detained & kidnapped by human traffickers, and avoiding or surviving this leads them to a bureaucratic no-mans land, a liminal space where you are treated as less than the other people who live in your community while the government profits from migration and relies on it to turn the cogs of the capitalist machine.

We all suffer from this system, regardless of the colour of our skin or the place of our birth. Migrants and refugees bear the brunt of it but it divides and weakens the entire working class. This is why socialists oppose borders.

Loraine's experience is one of how solidarity and community can overcome the difficulties and barriers placed in front of migrants and refugees, and she talks about how a better future is possible through anti-racist activism.

The Internet was once a great source of information, now

- It's cluttered with AI regurgitation. (This is particularly infuriating to me. If anyone is interested, I could make a post about my thoughts.)

- Old sites are dead and gone.

- Reddit destroyed itself. (I can go on a rant about this too.)

- Too much marketing bullshit.

- Ads! Ads! Ads! Ads! Ads!

- Stupid paywalls.

- Search engines suck at getting you what you want. SEO is a cancer.

- People trying to make a quick buck. I don't mind paying for some things, I'm talking about the 0 effort get-rich-quick crap.

- Propaganda, psyops, scammers, etc.

See enshitification and dead internet theory.

It's hard to filter all this crap out! It's particularly worse for people with conditions like ADHD, Depression, Autism, etc.

It also makes it harder for me to do my job. Sometimes I need specific, slightly in depth information. Due to SEO, I get surface level AI regurgitated crap. Multiple websites, all the same. They also come with a torrent of adverts. It's a user hostile experience. (Maybe I could write my own, better search engine. One that might allow me to blacklist and greenlist certain websites for certain searches. Or one that detects AI generated content and filters. Actually, a browser extension that detects AI generated content might be pretty helpful.)

I think I've run into webpages that just have AI generated recipes. It's awful. I'm at the point where I just want to use physical cookbooks. Those also don't have a novel about some irrelevant backstory and 69,000,000 ads obscuring the recipe. (Now that I think of it, maybe it would be useful to write an app that can convert a physical recipe into a digital one ...)

I don't know what I want, what really needs to change, or how to fix things. All I know is that I am passionately upset.

really do like shri'iia being an oath of the crown paladin when she was still in menzoberranzan meaning that she very much upheld the terror and status quo lolth enforced over her drows. she was kind of an inquisitor in a way, or a crusader, and she hunted down anyone who didnt want to follow lolth. she was very much a part of the people who enforced that fear and paranoia lolth particularly likes, more so as she was kept in the shadow so she just instills dread on others without them knowing. her name is supposed to mean 'silent chaos' btw and she did just that. but then the script flips and now suddenly she's one being hunted. the worst part is shri'iia never understood why anyone would want to defy lolth before, but now that she's seen the other side and she's seen the potential that they were robbed from, that's when she understands why even though they were raised in the dark, some still yearned to see the sun. that's when she understands why her own mother was willing to throw everything away and be an outcast so she's not under lolth's gaze anymore, and i don't think shri'iia regrets what she has done when she was still following lolth - more so that she regrets and scorns that she never knew there were other options besides lolth, and it's possible to live without that constant fear and dread that comes with serving the spider queen.

Does Steve have the best redemption arc in TV, or does he simply have the loudest?

I think his heel-face turn at the end of s1 is an inspired piece of TV writing #not because it’s particularly deep or realistic #(it’s passable) #but because it’s fun and energizing and sets up a more interesting dynamic than if he died or stayed bad #but in all subsequent seasons the show tries to capitalize on the goodwill from his redemption #without having him meaningfully change #he’s just kind of stalled out at being basically nice but sort of clueless #which would actually be fine #if his arc was presented as one of self-actualization #I can root for Steve just finding his unconventional path to happiness while also being basically nice #but it’s galling to have everyone fawn over him for not being a high school bully anymore #while also minimizing his s1 behavior by framing Robin and Eddie’s initial hostility as mostly jealousy #(also. Okay I've officially both read Annihilation and seen the movie. On one hand I know they're both doing different things and the movie is a VERY loose adaptation and that's fine. But I am like 1000 times more interested in how strange the book biologist is than in the movie.
