MST3K's most wanted
I've been organizing my Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection, so I've become preoccupied with the handful of episodes that are not easily available, and the reasons why. In case in anyone else is interested, I thought I'd share what I've learned.
Tumblr media
For our purposes we'll be focusing on the ten seasons that aired on cable, from 1989 to 1999. With the post-2017 episodes, it's trivial to purchase them on home video or streaming. And the pre-cable stuff, from KTMA, is widely available as bootleg footage, which is probably about as good as you're ever going to get. But the episodes from the cable era have been notoriously difficult to re-release, and require special attention.
Of the 176 MST3K episodes that aired on cable, 166 have been released on home video, and 145 are available for streaming/download on the Gizmoplex. As someone who's been trying to collect the whole series since the 1990s, I think that's pretty impressive. But there are 40 episodes that have been particularly tricky. Let's take a look, won't you?
Currently available on the Gizmoplex, but never on home video (1):
913 - Quest of the Delta Knights
As I understand it, nobody was sure who owned the rights to this movie, or how to contact them, for years. The situation has only recently been cleared up, perhaps too late for a DVD release.
Currently available on the Gizmoplex, but out of print on home video (8):
203 - Jungle Goddess
317 - Viking Women and the Sea Serpent
319 - War of the Colossal Beast
510 - The Painted Hills
619 - Red Zone Cuba
806 - The Undead
808 - The She-Creature
912 - The Screaming Skull
It looks like all of these went out of print due to being on a set where a different episode's rights expired. Theoretically Shout Factory could re-release any of them in a "Lost and Found" set, but that may not be cost-effective as people move away from collecting physical media.
Currently available on home video and MST3K's official YouTube, but not on the Gizmoplex (1):
615 - Kitten with a Whip (Vol. 25 DVD, 2012)
Kitten is one of the Universal movies that could only be licensed for physical media. And yet, it's the only one I can find on the official YouTube channel. Beats me why that is.
Currently available on home video, but not on the Gizmoplex (16):
401 - Space Travelers (Vol. 32 DVD, 2015)
522 - Teen-Age Crime Wave (Vol. 33 DVD, 2015)
524 - 12 to the Moon (Vol. 35 DVD, 2016)
601 - Girls Town (Vol. 39 DVD, 2017)
605 - Colossus and the Headhunters (Vol. 38 DVD, 2017)
614 - San Francisco International (Vol. 32 DVD, 2015)
704 - The Incredible Melting Man (Vol. 36 DVD, 2016)
801 - Revenge of the Creature (Vol. 25 DVD, 2012)
802 - The Leech Woman (25th Anniversary Edition DVD, 2013)
803 - The Mole People (Vol. 26 DVD, 2013)
804 - The Deadly Mantis (Vol. 27 DVD, 2013)
805 - The Thing That Couldn't Die (Vol. 29 DVD, 2013)
814 - Riding With Death (Vol. 36 DVD, 2016)
815 - Agent for H.A.R.M (Vol. 33 DVD, 2015)
901 - The Projected Man (Vol. 30 DVD, 2014)
1013 - Diabolik (Vol. 39 DVD, 2017)
I was able to find the DVD sets listed above on Shout Factory's website. As far as I know, they'll remain in print for the foreseeable future, but there's no way to know how long that will last.
The general pattern with these episodes is that the movies are owned by major studios that would only license them for physical media. Columbia owns Teen-Age Crime Wave and 12 to the Moon. MGM owns Girls Town and The Incredible Melting Man. Paramount owns Diabolik. But the big player here is Universal, which controls the rights to Space Travelers, San Francisco International, Revenge of the Creature, Leech Woman, Mole People, Deadly Mantis, Thing That Couldn't Die, Riding With Death, Agent for H.A.R.M., and Projected Man.
The odd man out here is Colossus and the Headhunters; I can't find any info on who owns the rights to this film, which may be part of the problem.
The real hard cases, the stickiest of wickets, are below...
Released on home video, but now out of print (5):
212 - Godzilla vs. Megalon (Vol. 10 DVD, 2006)
309 - The Amazing Colossal Man (VHS, 1996)
910 - The Final Sacrifice (Vol. 17 DVD, 2010)
1001 - Soultaker (Vol. 14 DVD, 2009)
1012 - Squirm (Turkey Day Collection DVD, 2014)
Megalon and Colossal Man were both recalled when rights issues came up after they were released. Oops. These were produced by Rhino, back before Shout Factory took over.
The Final Sacrifice is particularly tough to find, even unofficially, because director Tjardus Greidanus is very aggressive about tracking down download links. I always figured someone was similarly possessive of Soultaker, since it's clearly a passion project, but that's purely my speculation.
The Turkey Day DVD set is still available on Amazon at a reasonable price, so Squirm is still relatively accessible for now.
Never released on home video or streaming (9):
201 - Rocketship X-M
213 - Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
311 - It Conquered the World
416 - Fire Maidens of Outer Space
418 - Attack of the the Eye Creatures
807 - Terror from the Year 5000
809 - I was a Teenage Werewolf
905 - The Deadly Bees
906 - The Space Children
In 2017, Shout released its final (?) MST3K DVD collection, which included Satellite Dishes, a compilation of host segments from episodes that "may never get a legitimate release." This included the nine listed above, as well as The Amazing Colossal Man and Quest for the Delta Knights. Of course, Delta Knights eventually got a digital-only release, which is cause for a glimmer of hope. But the others are probably tougher nuts to crack.
Wade Williams owned the rights to Rocketship X-M and had a particular sentimental attachment to the film. His death in 2023 may make it easier to negotiate with his estate, but I wouldn't count on that being a swift process.
Godzilla vs. Megalon and Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster are part of a prestigious franchise, and it's remarkable MST3K got away with riffing on Godzilla movies in the first place. I get the impression that Japanese culture doesn't particularly appreciate the sort of mockery MST3K is known for, so the rights to these two movies may be a long, long shot. Then again I used to think there was no hope of for the Gamera episodes too.
Fire Maidens, Deadly Bees, and Space Children are owned by Olive Films, and currently licensed to Paramount. It's possible a deal can be made later on, but not until the current arrangement expires.
The major bugbear for MST3K fandom is Susan Hart, the widow of American International Pictures co-founder James Nicholson. One way or another the AIP catalog was split up and Hart laid claim to several of their films, including Amazing Colossal Man, It Conquered the World, Eye Creatures, Terror from the Year 5000, and Teenage Werewolf. Hart's price for licensing her movies is very high, and it seems Shout has given up negotiating with her. I suppose the situation could change when she passes away, but I'd feel rather silly hoping for an old woman to die just so I can pay 8 bucks to watch robots laugh at a werewolf movie.
In conclusion, I've already purchased all the movies available on the Gizmoplex (I got most of them in a Kickstarter reward package), and the 31 that aren't available there can be obtained by, ahem, other means. So it's a great time to be an MST3K fan, and I'm still amazed how easy it is to watch the show nowadays.

Inside of Her Head (Steve X You)
Tumblr media
A/N: This is just a little thing I wrote real quick. I'm actually experiencing this right now with my brain going a mile a minute. I literally spent 15min telling my roommate I don't want her to leave my side because I'm afraid something is going to happen to her or she's going to leave. My therapist says that's my inner child...some stuff we've been working on *sigh*. But my roommate suggested I channel this energy into something creative and thus you get this...this is what I wold love rn. Steve just holding me till I calm down and then watching a movie with me till I fall asleep <3.
Warnings: Reader experiencing an anxiety (manic) attack; Steve helps her through it
Word Count: 803
Steve comes home from work to a spotless apartment and he’s immediately on edge. Most people would be happy to come home to a clean space but not for him. When the home is this organized, something is wrong.
“Y/N, baby? Where are you?”
No one responds but he knows you’re here, promptly going on the hunt. It doesn’t take him long to find you sitting on the bathroom floor with your knees to your chin and your hands twirling your hair as your blank eyes disassociate through him.
You two have prepared for moments like this; you warned him when he moved in. It still doesn’t take away the guilt that bubbles in your stomach when you finally notice him as he places himself on the floor cross-legged in front of you.
“Hey, Stevie. When…When did you get home?”
“A couple of minutes ago.”, he answers softly as his eyes continue to scan you over. “How was your day, honey?”
Your hands shake in front of you as your fingers seem to drum the air, moving without any real thought as your anxious eyes sift through memories.
“It was good. It was good. I-I-I cleaned. I had only meant to clean the kitchen but then I thought you would want to relax in the living room when you got home so I tidied up in there but then I noticed your movies were out of whack and I thought it would be fun to organize them buy genre for our next movie night. When I finished that, I was going to lay down and nap but I couldn’t stop thinking about how the bathroom has been really messy lately and you know how I’ve been slacking on that…”
Steve listened to your rambling with the patience of a saint. Your lips were moving a mile a minute but he didn’t need to follow everything to know what was going on. Some days your brain just wasn’t 100%. Some days the medicine didn’t always help or something triggered an episode for you that had you like this.
You tried explaining it to him before but he never truly understood until he experienced one with you himself. You sobbed on the bedroom floor, crying about fears that he would never allow to happen. He didn’t know you during your trauma so he couldn’t be there for you then but he could definitely keep you safe now physically and emotionally.
“Baby girl, look at me.”, he cooed as he placed his palms out for you to take, grinning when you did. “I want you to inhale for me. That’s my good girl…and exhale. Good.”, he soothed as his thumbs tenderly massaged your skin.
“Everything got so loud, Steve. I couldn’t…”, you shook your head as the tears fell before he scooted a bit closer to where you were.
“What triggered it this time? Do you know?”
You shook your head again.
“I just…had this voice in my head…that says I don’t deserve you. That you’re going to leave me here alone just like everyone else. Today…it was so loud…”
“It’s ok, sweetheart. Breathe in again for me…and out again. Good, pretty girl. You’re doing so good.”, he smiled as he reached up to caress your cheek before taking your hand again. “Y/N, I love you so much. I’ve never met another girl like you in my entire life. You are beautiful, sweet, so talented and so smart, baby. There’s no one in the world more perfect for me than you. I’m not going anywhere.”
Once your breathing had slowed, Steve collected you into his arms and held you to his chest as he kissed your forehead.
“I’m sorry I’m such a nuisance. I don’t mean to be.”
“You’re not, honey, I promise. Your parents are the nuisances…making you think you aren’t enough. You are more than enough, baby. You’re everything to me and I’m always going to be here to take care of you.”
You two sat like that till your anxiety passed and you finally felt safe. After kissing his lips, he guided you into the shower where he cleaned you and washed your hair before putting you in your most comfortable pajamas and carrying you out onto the couch.
“How about I make some dinner and we watch something EXTREMELY violent?”
You giggle as he widens his eyes and you nod. While he’s making dinner, he brings you your favorite drink and turns on one of the sitcoms that makes you laugh until everything is ready.
“Steve. Thank you…for everything. I love you to, baby.”
Tilting his body to kiss your lips, he playfully rustles your hair and throws a blanket over your legs.
“You don’t have to thank me, Y/N. I’m always going to be here for you; good days and bad.”

I’m really glad Sean Hennen finally got his plane crash. In the waning days of season 7, mid-March 2020, Sean got assigned to write an outline for episode 722, and I was assigned to help him. We came up with this really, really fun episode -- and after the season 7 arc had been wrapped up, the final scene of the season would be Red and Dembe, sitting on their plane, talking. All of the sudden, the plane would make an odd motion, and Dembe and Red would run to the cockpit in time to see Edward parachuting away as the plane dove toward the Atlantic Ocean. Off their faces, end season 7!!
We were very proud of it, and very excited. He was supposed to pitch it to the Johns on March 12th. I couldn’t go because I had an optometrist appointment, so I called him after I got out. “How’d it go?” I asked. “Yeah, here’s the thing,” he said, “we’re shutting down the season early due to COVID.”
By the time we came back for season 8, episode 722 had been turned into episode 803, Sean and I were assigned to other episodes, and our original outline didn’t really make sense any more with the structure of the season. But that plane crash always remained our white whale, and I’m so, so happy we finally got our parachuting Edward!
(By the way, I really respect Sean Hennen. He’s a great writer, a great mentor, and a great leader. I promise you he’s going to be running his own show one day, so keep your eyes out)

Transcript: 屈原 Qu Yuan - 国殇 Our Martyrs
[Listen to the episode here.]
This is 国殇 Our Martyrs, by Qu Yuan.
grasping Wu pikes—wearing rhinoceros armour, chariot axles enmeshing—short-swords joining.
banners blotting the sun—foes like clouds, raining arrows twofold—men eager to be first.
my formation scattered—my line trampled, my left horses dead—my right sword-gashed.
a duststorm for two wheels—traces a team of four, “reinforcements!” the jade drumsticks—“attack!” the drums call.
the heavenly hour resents us—the mighty spirit rages, sternly slaying first to last—hometown fields abandoned.
going but not coming—departing but not returning, the plains untended—the roads unending.
bearing long swords—clutching Qin bows, heads and bodies parted—hearts still untried.
indeed both courageous—and accompanied by Wu, staunch to the end—broken by none.
bodies stopped in death—both spark and spirit, steadfast souls—heroes among ghosts.
---
I haven't done a bilingual reading this time, you'll notice, for a couple different reasons.
First, it's long compared to the average length of the types of poem I focus on translation. And every time I've sat down to record this it's been brutally hot in my non-air-conditioned building (makes doing anything other than sleeping very hard).
Second, much of the vocabulary is deeply archaic even by the standards of classical Chinese poetry. Um, let's see, I've done readings of work by Li Qingzhao, that's Song dynasty or 1084-1155 CE. By Du Mu and Du Fu, that's slightly different parts of the Tang dynasty (803-852 and 712-770 CE respectively). Whereas the collection that this poem comes from, the highly foundational Chuci or Songs of Chu, dates from the third century BCE. And while Tang and Song poetry would've been performed in Middle Chinese, the Chuci would've been in a southern Chu version of Old Chinese. That is more than 2200 years of linguistic change, and as an amateur that is way above my paygrade. I don't know, I'm going a tangent -- modern Mandarin does not really resemble either Middle Chinese or Old Chinese, very much. Again, two millennia of linguistic change.
I mean, that said, this comes from such a well-known classic I'm sure there's no problem finding videos of other people doing readings of this poem.

《— Quoth the Raven #1 —》
Tumblr media
General blog commentary is that I updated the desktop theme and moved things around in my posts, created a new one just for tags, &c.
Tumblr media
In regards to actual AU content, I’m super excited to start working on this project because it’s been sitting here for a while. I don’t want to go too off the rails into ridiculous AU territory. I want to keep moderately close to canon to keep it realistic within the rules of the game and universe. Considering the Multiverse, there’s an infinite amount of variations, each slightly different from each other, that exist. My AU is just a fan interpretation of one of these alternate universes.
I still don’t have a succinct name for this AU, viva la vendetta perhaps may be one, but even that feels too long for me. While I was in the middle of thinking about all of this, Viva Las Vengeance by Panic! got released and I had already been well into my Percy / Critical Role brainrot after watching TLOVM and starting campaign one (I am about 60 episodes into campaign two as of this post as well).
Between finding songs that fit the characters and listening to the song on loop, I was like huh, this might prove something interesting”. Another song I was listening to that I see as a “Percy Song” (at least for my AU version) was / is Bang Bang by Green Day.
The line of lyrics that really stood out to me was “Oh baby, baby, this is viva vendetta”. However, “viva vendetta” is an incorrect phrasing of the Italian phrase “Long live Revenge”. I adjusted to the correct phrasing (“viva la vendetta”) and ran with it. So yeah, blog URL is technically inspired by a Green Day song.
Tumblr media
In regards to characterization, I noted something when I was researching information. It’s assumed the Briarwoods took over Whitestone around 805 PD (to make things easier for this AU, I am saying sometime in 805 PD exactly). Canonically, Percy is in his early to mid 20s by 811 PD. Vox Machina liberated Whitestone from the Briarwoods a year prior in 810 PD.
Here’s where my interest came from as I had assumed Percy to be in his early to mid teens at best during the events of the Briarwood take over (I’m aware there are likely people who knew he was not, but I had not looked into the specifics prior as it was not needed information).
Campaign wise, if Percy was in his mid 20s (24 - 26) during 811 PD, then in 805 PD he would’ve been anywhere from 18 - 20. If he was in his early 20s (20 - 23) then he would have been 14 - 17. Since for me, and this AU, I have Percy being 26, using 811 PD as a point (per canon), he is 20 at the time of the Brairwoods take over.
Tumblr media
So, here’s the current brief timeline (a future post will be made to expand on this in more detail).
785 PD — Percy is born.
789 PD — Cassandra is born.
799 PD — Professor Anders begins tutoring Percy in topics outside of the typical curriculum and subsequently begins to feed into, and sow, discontent within the young Lord ; Percy is 14 ; Cassandra is 10.
803 PD — Anders suggests to Percy that the Briarwoods come to visit Whitestone under the guise of tutelage ; Percy is 18 ; Cassandra is 14.
805 PD — Briarwood take over ; Percy is 20 ; Cassandra is 16.
810 PD — Liberation of Whitestone from the Briarwoods ; Percy is 25 ; Cassandra is 21.
811 PD — Point in the timeline that things are based on ; Ending events of the Chroma Crisis ; Percy is 26.

The Games are 6% of Sonic pre-IDW:
Do the people who only like the games of Sonic like most of Sonic? Do they like even 51% if they hate the comics and cartoons? Long story short, no, they don’t even like 10% of it. There are just 74 official Sonic games and 1531 pre-IDW alternate continuity stories that aren’t untranslated manga. The list of 74 Sonic games includes games that most Sonic fans would dismiss anyways, like the Game Gear games and spin-offs. How many games do casual Sonic fans like? 14, give or take. 1531/14=109.3, less than 10% of it. Define a fan of something. Is it, “ hating everything but 1 section in it? “ The dictionary definition of purist is “ believing in and following very traditional rules or ideas about a subject. “
To each own, I’m sad about it because they’re missing out on a lot of great stories, but they don’t have to like all of it. I notice all of the big problems in every alternate continuity too, so I’m not passing judgement on them just for that. The problem is these people seriously claim with a straight face that they are Sonic fans and think they should be catered to by Sega exclusively. By that logic Sega should cater to Mario fans instead. This is why some fans have taken to calling the haters of Archie and SatAM, “ Canon Nazis. “
It makes more sense to only cater to the fans that like most of a series and ignore the others because only catering to purists will only alienate the ones actually buying its new products. Archie pre-reboot isn’t mandatory to like, it’s only 623 stories. 1531-623=908. But fans that like enough of the rest of the series and not that are rare. 1531-623-27 SatAM stories=881. While that’s still more than 50% of the stories, what are the chances of someone who hates Archie and SatAM liking EVERYTHING else in the franchise?
Archie and SatAM have some big problems which I don’t like either but I look past them because there’s so many well-written stories I’d hate otherwise. The type of people that can’t look past them aren’t gonna be very forgiving of big problems that are obvious. Chris Thorndyke’s not gonna be tolerable for them. That’s -78 episodes there, getting at 803. Sonic X also had a 40 issue comic, and there is no way they wanted to read that. That’s 763, 2 below 765. Less than 50% of the franchise. The people who hate SatAM and Archie are extremely unlikely to have even found out about the translated Sonic manga, let alone liked all 16 of them. That’s 749.
And it’s likely for a game purist to hate all of even the mostly game-like Sonic the Comic because Sonic and Tails aren’t enough like they are in the games in it. Minus 367! That’s 382! Sonic also isn’t like himself in Sonic Prime since he’s a big idiot. It also wouldn’t be surprising if game purists tended to hate Sonic Boom AND its comic, since its main gimmick is having most of the main characters be Out of Character in annoying ways. That’s minus 104 episodes and 12 stories of its comic.
These people hate most of the franchise. Quantifiably how are they Sonic fans? They’d be the type to wish all of these alternate continuities didn’t make up the franchise or say they don’t count, and now imagine someone said that about the Batman Animated Series. After all, it’s an alternate continuity of Batman. At the same time, imagine if someone said Batman should only be that one show. I don't claim to be a Final Fantasy fan when I've only played the first 2 games. I'd never be mad at it for not trying to cater to just me either.
