I don't understand how people can say their not painting Aegon II in a sympathetic light, when their clearly doing everything they can to find a middle ground between all the extreme ways he's presented in Fire And Blood while at the same time fitting the pieces of his backstory and character together, to show him as a lonely abused boy who has never known unconditional love and affection.

Aegon sank into depravity and vice in order to cope with the impossible expectations placed on him from birth: his family gave him a conqueror's name in the hopes he would seize a throne he never wanted, his mother raised him to be afraid projecting her own anger and regret about Rhaenyra onto him, his grandfather beat him for his failures to live up to their standards of what king and prince should be like, and his father- who never wanted to remarry, never wanted to have more children- neglected and ignored him, hoping the problem of his existence would just resolve itself.

Aegon has spent his whole life in the specter of this moment, of the succession, knowing everything would be rent asunder by it's coming, powerless to stop it. And he puts on the crown and turns around, expecting what he has known all his life: rejection, scorn, and disappointment.

And instead? They cheer him.

For the first time in his life, he knows approval, adulation, and acceptance. For the first time, he knows what it is to be good enough. And he smiles.

Episode 9 Rei smile count (or smile frames count) and why

Miri thanks him for the rice balls he's made

2. About to beat everyone's asses in Miri's sake with Kazuki

3. He keeps smiling as he runs!

4. Happy he fulfilled Miri's wish and helped her win

5. Still same smile as the earlier one, but gosh this frame is so beautiful

6. Happy after race that he made her smile

7. Smiling both at the fact that Miri considers him her family and just the peaceful moment they all share (Miri laughing, Kazuki moved to tears)

9. Not exactly a smile, but we've never seen such a peaceful look on his face. It's like he's wearing this very gentle smile just like the sunshine falling on him and his beloved family

Let's be serious. This episode is a huge moment for Rei. He knows what he wants to do. He wants to be with Miri and Kazuki. He wants to protect Miri, doesn't want any harm happen to her if not the two of them (Miri + Kazuki). Let's just hope he doesn't suddenly disappear after watching Miri asleep and thinking that for her best he should abandon them. And if that does happen, he better come back and do everything in his power to find a way for them to be together.
