So I was overthinking the mechanics of how AI think themselves to death after 7 or so years in the context of Church and how he couldn't run the suit because of his memories and like.
I kind of hate how much sense that makes.
For those not in the know, computers have what is called RAM, random access memory. It's what programs use to store temporary data so that it can be called quickly enough to run a program. If you run a python script, those variables in the script are stored in memory. Not necessarily in a file unless you write the data there. They're just stored locally within the program and then the memory is deallocated when the program is done so that the computer can use that space for other things.
But as a computer runs, stuff starts to clog the memory. Memory leaks, background programs, whatever. Junk code can clog the memory that isn't helping anything and just slows down the computer. The easy solution to this is to restart the computer, which flushes the memory. It's why the number one tech support tip is to turn a computer off and on again, and part of why that usually works. It's getting rid of all the buggy jank code clogging up memory.
Okay great.
So what if the computer is a person and that junk code is actual memories.
What if that buggy, slow computer is a person that feels emotions and values his memories? And now that computer needs to run something that he. Does not have the space in his memory to run.
What if those memories are what are holding him together as a person, a person of his own, and without that he is seven individual subroutines?
And then he has to throw all those memories away because the number one way to fix a buggy computer is to reboot it.
Anyway I'm feral about that little blue bitch.

carolina and epsilon have just the best relationship because it's such a moving remix of blood family and found family - find the people in your blood family worth sticking with, who you never previously had a chance to be close to amidst all the whirlpool of familial dysfunction. drag your way out of that whirlpool and cut out the patterns and relationships that refuse to change. recontextualize what your blood family can be and mean to you, together with someone else who Went Through It.
and then also because they're still pretty dysfunctional. yeah develop a level of codependency where you constantly share thoughts with a sibling who shares your neuroses about being the bestest most usefulest, and needing to control everything because you're obviously solely responsible for protecting everyone and fixing everything. that's what i call a MENTAL HEALTHY DECISION BABY
but most importantly, because carolina busts down the door of a high-security secret military archive like "WAKE UP EPSILON, i've got no time for your coma, we have THINGS TO DO" and church is waking up with the worst nap hangover like "HNNNUGHGGHG??? can i not have one fucking second to finish some fucking life-changing self-reflection here???" "no. get in loser, we're going to kill Dad." And that's how they meet.

RvB is like ‘died and came back wrong’ but for yourself.
The copy of the Director’s consciousness grew to hate him. The Director had to torture Alpha until he broke off the parts of himself that made the grief unbearable. The Director without his grief is an entirely different person. In the end, only part of Alpha that remains are the memories. Then Church and Carolina love each other like family. You mean this whole time it was possible to keep the memories and move forward?
You killed yourself and came back wrong. But you’re so broken that what came back was not only better than you, but disgusted by you.

Guys.
Guys I'm going insane.
In the memory unit, right before he lets Tex go, Epsilon says this to Caboose, Tucker, and Tex who he thinks is about to leave:
"And if you see Agent Washington, tell him I said memory is the key. He'll know what that means. Oh and also, tell him I said thanks."
The world is ending as far as Epsilon knows, so why would Epsilon make a point of getting the message "memory is the key" to a memory construct of Wash? It can't be to let Wash know that Epsilon was still alive ("Delta was telling me Epsilon was still alive" S6, the iconic reveal speech). If the world really is ending, like Epsilon thinks it is, Wash would have no hope of bringing Epsilon back for another iteration.
So again, why would Epsilon tell him "memory is the key" and add that Wash will "know what it means"?
Answer:
Because Epsilon says to Tex in his big S9 goodbye speech:
"Don't you get it? You were the memory. You were the key."
If Wash - even just Epsilon's memory construct of Wash - heard Tex deliver the message "memory is the key", and presumably then figured out that the message was from Church aka Alpha (or so he thinks because timelines are weird in the memory unit), what would he think that meant?
Wash would know that Church figured it out. Wash would know that Church was letting the memory of Tex go.
Not convinced?
Epsilon makes a point to thank Wash, implying that Wash is part of the reason he figured it out at all. No, actually, that's an understatement; Wash is a huge part of the reason Epsilon figured this out, because Wash is the one who gets it. Epsilon was inside his fucking head imploding from the memory of loosing Allison, but Wash could see through the grief and understand the pain it was causing all the agents of the program. That's why he wanted revenge against PFL, why he went after Epsilon in the first place, why Delta told him memory was the key. Wash understood that one man's grief could and did make life hell for everyone else:
Alpha: "What do we do with it [Epsilon]?"
Wash: "We take it. And we get it into the hands of someone who can use all its information. Then they can bring down the person responsible for what was done to Alpha, and to me, and to my friends. They can take down the Director."
And even if you ignore all of that, if nothing else, Wash was the one who made sure Epsilon lived long enough to figure things out. Wash led the Reds and Blues to get him out of the PFL archives in season 6, saving him from the emp blast. Wash helped save Epsilon from the Meta at the end of season 8, even if it was for selfish reasons.
Wash saved Epsilon, in every sense of the word, both despite and because of what Epsilon did to him.
Fuck, man.

Rvbtober day 21: Don’t say it (ep)
Tumblr media
Holy fuck this was a lot, both to draw and like emotionally. This is ep destroyed me when I first watched it man, so revisiting it was really twistin the fuckin knife but it was worth it! I really like how Allison’s silhouette (in the drawing of the playback) outlines the director even if it was unintentional along with how his surviving creations (Carolina and Epsilon) stand over him, it’s all very poetic. Anyway that’s enough rambling, hope y’all like this one as much as I do! See y’all tmrw :]
