Cinderella

Soviet Movie Club(tm) will honour the Old New Year a few days late with a covert New Year classic - the Cinderella film from 1947. How is it new yeary? - it’s always broadcast on the telly, yes :)) on the first of january at six in the morning, that is.

Cinderella is not only a classic due to its magical mood, happy songs and legendary actors such as Faina Ranevskaya, Erast Garin and the og soviet dad Vasily Merkuriev, it’s also a classic because it managed to be all that despite 1947 while the Soviet Union was trying to recover from the devastation. Locations were different as the normal ones were demolished in the war, the props and costumes were made from drapes and bits that Ranevskaya brought from the Spring film shooting we’ve watched this summer; and even the original black and white film used was a trophy yoinked from the nazis. Despite all odds, the fairytale and happiness lives on, and I think this is one of the big reasons why this film is as appreciated as it is.

If you want to see it do turn your tellies on at 6am on the first of jan- kidding, the modern colour restoration of the film will be in its full glory this Saturday, 16th of January at 8pm UK time.
