yin and yang: carmy and sydney's creative processes + menu planning

what i love about analyzing carmy and sydney is the way they mirror each other. their similarities and differences, and how they have the potential to complement each other well. truly make each other better at this.

this is most evident with the way they approach creating a dish.

sydney's creative process

evidenced by sheridan (s01e05) and sundae (s02e03), sydney is very imaginative when it comes to creating a dish. the editing in these episodes gives us an intimate view of her creative process. recipes often come to her in dreams/daydreams.

sydney gets inspired by her passion for cooking, her family history and her city/world around her (architecture, nature, other restaurants in Chicago). this really fits into sydney's motivations as a chef.

Sydney uses food to make people happy. She likes to take care of people. someone on here explained the significance of sydney wanting exactly one michelin star, which would signify affordable high quality food that normal everyday people have access to. in braciole she mentions to marcus that her dad and her didn't really go out to eat so when they did, they made it count and it was special. she wants to create an experience like that with her own spot (the Bear).

so naturally that is reflected in her food. its not simply a great meal, but a fabric/archive of her culture, history, worldview and entire character.

while sydney has a very imaginative creative process, she often just jots down her ideas in her little notebook(s), for later reflection.

carmy's creative process

carmy has a more tense relationship with cooking. while sydney and carmy are both amazing chefs, carmy seems to be more jaded and detached from his work.

for carmy he grew up in a household where food was a big part of his family. his mom, mikey, and nat can all cook well. he is naturally very great at it. he uses food to be closer to the people he loves. thats why in the face of rejection from his brother, he goes off and becomes one of the best chefs in the country out of spite. why he uses the beef to try and fix his relationship with mikey. why he was so devasted when syd quit and why he started his dream restaurant with her after she came back.

because we dont get an intimate look into carmys psyche when creating a dish, its harder to say but based off his monolouge in braciole (s01e8) and the way he uses food to connect with people he loves rather than having passion for it independently i can surmise that carmy isn't imaginative as sydney. food is more like a math equation (ironic)/a science.

“he’s the best bc he didn’t have any of the bullshit”, emotional ties/relationships of any kind. his career esp at EMP were isolating, rigid and cold. he was the best bc he was calculating, precise and competitive. which breeds excellence in his field while straying him further away from love and true passion.

i imagine carmy to be more pragmatic with creating a dish.

but carmy is a creative person at his core and while creating a dish might not be as colorful as when sydney does it. we do know that carmy can draw and visualize his ideas onto paper. "Sistine Chapel" level drawings according to syd.

sydney + carmy - potential true partnership

on my 3rd rewatch, i couldn't help but feel so dissatisfied with their partnership. granted this is on purpose since the show is only 2 seasons in and they are trying to do a slow burn in all aspects, not just romantic.

it really hit me that carmy and sydney have never - at least on screen - created a meal together. in s1, we never see the risotto come to fruition, we just get carmys input but never the finished product. in s2 finally, carmy and Sydney work together now that their dynamic has changed from boss and employee to partners. we get like what? 4 scenes of them creating the menu, and having this amazing professional chemistry but ultimately leads to two failed dishes, which would be ok if they worked together after that. but they dont...

instead for the rest of the season, we see them (mainly Syd) working on the menu separately. the menu is....alright. mainly has carmy written all over it (he has a the seven fishes + cannolis, weird homage to one of the worst nights of his life).

*putting on another pair of shipper goggles to say this makes the whole "you make me better at this" confession, even more mind-boggling bc better at what? you guys haven't even worked together all season. this = life , i rest my case*

in s3 and beyond, im excited for them to truly start working together as partners and actually see them create a dish together.

i want to see how their approaches to creating a dish can help the other.

how sydneys creative process can help carmy

besides the obvious romantic implications of the palette cleanser outing, the potential for them to understand each other on a deeper level in regards to food is something i mourn everyday.

after sydney goes on her trip solo, we see her ride the ferry and just take a look at her surroundings. shes thinking about the food she ate, shes looking at buildings, windows, looking at the snow. all inspiration for a dish.

imagine if carmy was there with her. he would be curious about what she's thinking about, get insight on how she creates and maybe want to learn to see food in a less practical way.

i mean he hadn't drawn in years it seems until he was inspired by sydney and the chaos menu to draw again....now imagine if he didn't ruin the moment by bringing up claire (LMFAO). the point is, sydney naturally sparks creativity and passion in him, even when they aren't together.

i know many people are theorizing that carmy will leave the culinary industry (and i agree most of the time) but i also think sydney is slowly but surely helping him discover/re-discover a passion for cooking. i think that carmy likes that sydney likes to take care of people because subconsciously he knows he does the same thing or has the potential for it (i.e making tiff sprite from scratch when she was experiencing morning sickness). evidenced by fishes (s02e6), care often feels like an obligation (he takes care of drunk donna when shes going through an episode) but it doesnt have to be this way. and now carmy wants to get a star for her....their interests are slowly aligning.

how carmys creative process can help sydney

this isn't as concrete as the one above but i found it interesting thinking about how carmys more pragmatic approach and sydneys idealistic approach can work in tandem.

first scene in pop (s02e5) shows sydney and tina late at night working on the tasting menu. later in the episode we find out that carmy has been pushing back menu planning leaving sydney on her own. she trying an elements concept which is extremly creative and impressive but even tina says, which sydney later agrees, that its a lot for a tasting menu.

im stretching maybe....but based on carmys comment on her risotto from the season before (needs acid) + his practical approach, it seems like he acts like a buffer when sydneys ideas get "a lot".

*in chemistry buffers are solutions added to resist pH changes when acidic and basic components are added*

so if carmy needs to be more creative and sometimes sydneys ambitions gets ahead of her....

sydney is the heart, while carmy is the brain (???)

one cannot work without the other. when they truly come together to create the menu, they both need to learn from one another to elevate the restaurant. not to mention with carmy's italian american roots and syd's Nigerian-Caribbean/southern roots, they have the potential for amazing fusion dishes and real partnership. i and others want the menu to physically reflect both of them.

conclusion

i literally dont know where im going with this. sorta kinda meta but its more like hopes and dreams for next season and me wanting to type my ideas down.

they complement each other well ok? and have potential for a great partnership once they communicate better. i like this part of the definition of yin and yang: Their interaction is thought to maintain the harmony of the universe and to influence everything within it.

carmy and Sydney are the leaders of the bear, their relationship is foundational to the success of their restauarnt and team, once they work together truly, play to their strengths and weaknesses, then will come true harmony in their universe.

carmy is bad at math, syds great with numbers

carmy wasn't really great at school, this is sorta fanon but i can imagine syd excelled in school

both wear birkenstocks (more a chef thing but i still think its cute)

sunshine x grumpy trope but like better...usually the sunshine (syd) is more emotionally vulnerable making a space for grumpy (Carm), but they switch positions. carmy allows sydney to be more emotionally vulnerable often initiating deep conversations, while syd is more closed up/guarded

overall tho i think its cute that they are both shy/emotionally stunted but i do think purely aesthetic wise, sydney has a softer exterior ( doe eyes, colourful scarves, awkward) while carmy is more intimidating (tats, smokes, looks angry all the time)

both fight dirty - i.e their individual fights with richie (review, the bear)

carmy tho is more prone to outbrusts of anger/violence while sydney lets that shit shimmer until she explodes on you

okay okay okay hold on, while in sweet magnolias phase, I’d just like to acknowledge one thing I’ve seen spreading around through tiktok on this whole Annie/Jackson/Ty thing

There are some takes I’ve heard that apparently say 1) Jackson has always been the better choice and 2) Ty already lost his chance

Now this is no slandering to either ship as I did actually enjoy both (well one more than the other but anyways), lemme just rant.

For the first part, I can say with absolute certainty that Jackson was not always the better choice. Frankly, just taking into account his behavior in general towards anyone in S1 should immediately debunk this but to fully confirm this, he specifically targeted Ty and Annie. He sent the message to the baseball team, thus spreading the entire school, embarrassing her (+him) as well as mocking her publicly at prom. I know he’s remorseful for this later but it’s important to remember why the character development was necessary in the first place. So, yeah that’s just my two cents on that.

As for the ‘Ty already lost his chance’ take, I just have one simple statement on this: I don’t think he even knew he had a chance at the time.

And if you rlly wanna get analytical, I could as far as to argue, even if he had a notion of that (which I genuinely don’t believe he did esp in S1), it confused him far too much than he could handle at the moment with everything else going on in his life. I do believe he possibly had feelings right under his nose he didn’t seem to realize (bc let’s be real, when it comes to love, he’s super complicated)

Anyways as I was saying, the first detail that immediately made me question this was his obvious shock at the idea that Annie could like him. When he was talking about it with his friend, the way he described the events and how Annie got all weird like she liked him felt suspicious to me.

There are two ways I could see it: he’s so genuinely shocked at the idea of her liking him that mustered up some old feelings of his own or it’s just too weird to consider that this girl he’s known his whole life could have feelings for him.

(Well, it’s kinda similar but ya get me?)

Not even that but when all this happened after the dance, Annie was clearly intoxicated. What was true and what was just the alcohol messing with her brain? And on that note, I could even comment on their huge argument when Jackson sent the message + the conversation after church. Annie said time and time again that the kiss meant nothing and she just wasn’t thinking so what was he supposed to believe? What was he supposed to feel? The guy’s already got so much going on and dealing with these complicated emotions + situations might’ve just been a lot. I do think he’s had buried feelings since s1 but as an actual choice for Annie.. I don’t think he really realized.

So yup that’s just my whole rant on it all, I rather enjoyed doing this and I’ll probably add to it later b/c I feel like I’m missing so much and this isn’t even on S2 yet. Which I could also comment on hehehe. But also everyone plz refrain from yelling at me if I get any of this in accurate or a bit off, I’ve only seen this show once through and rewatched a couple scenes!

i reread all of lotr and i’ve been rewatching the movies and i’m extremely curious about the choice to take out every single instance of frodo being brave. like. they had him scramble away from the troll instead of stabbing it in the foot like he does in the books. had him scramble away from the ringwraiths on the hilltop when he actually stabs them. i haven’t gotten to that part yet, but i feel like they probably also took away his steady confrontation with shelob where he basically stares her down.

like their commitment to being true to the books is so strong - they lift so much of the dialogue directly from them! - that it baffles me they’d actively choose to take out all the moments where frodo shows his steel. did they just want to make him more vulnerable and more relatable? esp. since in the books, while the ring does make him tired, depressed, and sick, we don’t actually see that many moments of gollum-like behavior, whereas in the towers frodo’s already obsessing over it and snapping at sam (which i can’t actually recall a single instance of him doing in the books, aside from when sam offers to share bearing the ring with him in rotk).

it’s not that i don’t think movie!frodo is interesting as a hero (i do!) but when people complain about frodo being entirely passive as a hero, it’s because they only got the movie version of him - in the books, he’s not at all passive! he’s not a fighter like merry or pippin (or even sam) but he does take direct action against the people trying to hurt him, he does stand up for himself, and he does show immense courage in the face of darkness and fighting. and idk, i feel like movie!frodo loses something but not having as clearly displayed that internal dignity that book!frodo has.

#lotr #i read fotr and then immediately watched the movie #and i'd forgotten that frodo just huddles in terror against the wraiths AND the troll #even though in literally both scenes he leaps forward to stab the giant creatures trying to kill him #not to say movie!frodo is bad but i do think we lost something by making frodo less stab-happy #and i'm sure upping the ring descent was to increase dramatic tension and also clearly show #how the ring has altered frodo in a more tangible way #but like... the point of frodo as the ring-bearer is how intensely he was able to bear the ring when it poisoned everyone else so quick #idk idk #like a lot of movie changes i really like but the stuff they did to frodo and to gimli irks me #(gimli is so silver-tongued and charismatic and learned in the books!! just comic relief in the movies!! still hate that lol)

okay as promised more into the woods feelings

first i just want to say the sheer ENERGY of the crowd

like everyone got at least a minute of entrance applause

maybe it's just been a while since i've seen a broadway show or been in a truly full house on weekend evening performances but every show i saw there was just an absolute outpouring of love and with standing ovations at all of them

maybe i just went to popular shows but also i think maybe people are just so happy broadway is back and want to show it

i want to congratulate the producers on this show for realizing they could just STACK this cast

it's an ensemble show where everyone and i mean everyone gets something juicy and goes on a journey

also it's fav show of so many theatre folks and everyone wants a chance to sing sondheim

that said i do think it's origins as an encore performance limited it

because it did feel caught between trying to be a throw back to the obc

(which i think for myself and many cast members and many audience members we all have in our BONES like i have watched that vhs how many times)

and trying to be it's own thing

and as lovely and nostalgic as those moments were

the place where it SHINED were where the cast or director found something new

all of the puppetry and set were the stand outs because those were inventive and creative in the way that into the wood asks you to be!!

and also demonstrates what for me is key to producing into the woods

which is to realize that in addition to a healthy disrespect for the fourth wall, the seams of the production should absolutely show

and the bare bone aspect of the staging totally captured that

but i wished they could have taken the space to push it even further and done a proper revival?

i get that they were riding the high from encores and that time was of the essence in continuing that momentum

but like one of the places that felt quite fresh was anything with the princes

(which as much as i love agony okay i do think it's low hanging fruit)

but STILL they delivered something that felt different truly at its core than the obc

little red felt different

cinderella had her moments (esp at the end with the prince krysta rodriguez yelled!!!)

sjb's aforementioned moments in the woods

heck everyone found something that gave me chills and was unexpected but i couldn't help but feel they were brief moments in larger structure that was already set in a show that very much resembled the obc

WHICH AGAIN makes sense given the origins of this production and the fact that almost everyone was a replacement so even more limited rehearsal

but i want to know what sjb's and seb's baker and baker's wife entire arc could've looked like if they'd had a full rehearsal process to find it, you know?

again again not the intent of this production but it's what i can't help thinking

that said mad shout out to gavin creel who i don't really know but did not realize was that goddamn funny

like he would just stand on stage and already i'd be laughing

also i loved that sjb had moments when you could tell she had this massive belting voice just at her fingertips but since that wasn't the vibe of the show she didn't really use it

but i just still hear it in there

also i know that one day i should mature past having into the woods as one of my favorites musicals but i'm sorry i can't...it's rewatchability score is too high and it engages too directly with the themes i'm most interested in

i decided for better or worse to rewatch the first few seasons of true blood and i'm having the most VISCERAL memories of watching it on a screen that looked like this

that was NOT full screen-able. it buffered every 15 seconds and the quality was, generously, 240p. it was a miserable viewing experience i guess but it did make the entire show in turn much sexier and more fun. esp bc it was perfect beginning-of-senior-year water cooler conversation, close enough to the vampire fad but steamy and grown-up

anyway i know at some point while watching since even when i quit in s3? 4? 5? i was in college i must have been watching on megavideo z''l full laptop screen but seeing it currently on my medium sized living room tv feels sooooo wrong

#weird to find out why i remember some plot points so well #for example. one of the few things i distinctly remember is jason's jack off blister. obv it's the episode where we first go to fangtasia #i remember maryann's heart meat pie. obv bc that's timebomb #trying to think of a diffrent show i'd have watched before TB that had sex scenes and coming up short incidentally! truly's baby's first #micaela watches true blood

What would you say is your favorite thing about writing your character? Is it their characterization, their development so far, or would it be something else entirely? Are you proud of how far they've come since you started your blog? Is there anything you'd do differently if given the chance?

( Ayyy, thanks for the question. It’s been on my mind for a while now since I got this but whooo boy. its a lot tbh )

( I think its just the possibilities and fun I enjoy the most about writing any of my muses and how they range/differ from one another in mannerisms, tone, characterization and ideas that can happen or character developments that occur. No one muse is ever static in my view and even then, I can play with their internal battles, their thoughts, their demons or principles. What I enjoy most tho is the relations they forge with other muses and see how it plays out. Positive, negative, toxic, anything in between as long as both muns are having fun and communication is there. )

( I’m pretty proud of how far they come, esp for new muses that I just had no idea what to do with but they began to shift and shape into something as time goes on and I write them more with folks. Spend entire nights rewatching their scenes, talking about their motivations and things we don’t ‘see’ on screen, going on entire tangents that may just be entire fabrications but damn if it doesn’t feel fun as all hell just to read over on them and pick out the juicy bits. Things just keep changing and they can be adapted, changed, or chucked out altogether if they don’t fit as well as they did at like 4 am in the morning. )

( Ohh HM... I’m not sure if I ‘d change anything at first, it just feels like part of the process to stumble over things, post dumb things, play it out, rethink it, change it, etc. I mean I’d probably change my tags to have more pizzaz but that’s bc I suck at like making up snazzy terms or the lyrics don’t hit me till im listening to a song and then realize ‘ oh shit, this is some X MUSE vibes! ‘ )

( Maybe one thing is to just have the chance to have other positive relations to some muses bc they are adored but they are associated with my ex and just.. idk man. its like I want to write them again but there’s still that lingering ‘residue’ like idk how to explain it. Other than that, I’m pretty content with things bc its just part of the creative process in my head and I’m trying to not be as ‘caught frozen’ when it comes to new muses and developing them from stage 1 when I have no idea what they’re doing, what’s their story, what am I doing with them story-wise in relation to interaction with others, etc, etc. )

okay posting my thoughts IMMEDIATELY after having finished the finale:

-lance reddick 💔 hope whatever's next is treating you well. killer performance

-i think the show really would have benefited from longer episodes and maybe more eps too..... they really had to rush through things imo and i wish we could have gotten more downtime with the trio to see their personalities and relationships more. and also like camp in general, when they cut back to percy training w luke it was kinda jarring, like when did they even have time for that

-i really wish they had kept the dimension of annabeth having a crush on luke & showed us their relationship more. she struggles w his betrayal throughout the whole series and the reveal in the finale just felt kinda underwhelming. also i think it's so realistic and relatable to have a crush on a guy like that lol and it just overall adds more flavour in gen but also to her dynamic w percy

-in gen i feel like the show was already foreshadowing percabeth hard and i wish they had not lol. but i was worried they would do that so i may have just read what i thought i was gonna see into it.

-this ties back to pacing/short and limited # of eps, but it's just interesting to see how they tried to take it from book to episodic tv show. the second last few eps i think didn't come off as well/weren't as satisfying as episodes. just interesting to think about the structure an ep calls for and how/where it was a bit incompatible with the story. idk

-i did really like it. the guy who plays poseidon is so hot so gotta watch black sails i guess lol. i need to rewatch to better articulate the things i liked i think. looking forward to watching the making of lol.

-minor thing but wish they had eaten the food at times lol. i know there are very good reasons why they rarely do this in shows in general but i feel it just added to the sense of detachment from the characters that i had.... like idk, eating can just be so personal lol but also they're on this long quest and strapped for cash the entire time, they should be scarfing! they were in the book! minor but it distracted me a bit. and i think also speaks to the lack of downtime/pacing etc thing. i just feel we didn't get to really know the characters well. i think all my thoughts tie back to this really.

-concluding point : it took me so long to get used to seeing them be babies lol, i guess in my mind i tend to always think of them as my age. it's been so long since i read any of the books so i guess i was closer to their age back then esp during the sequel series, so i mostly remember having known them back then i guess? was just odd, they're literal babies!! but i got used to it. looking forward to (hopefully if they get renewed i guess) seeing more of this version of them. may have to reread the books but i may be looking for something i can never get back lol

-glad we saw so much of sally, and her relationship w percy and its complexities. they really focused on parenthood lol

-hopefully if they get renewed they can do longer and more eps. idk tho you really can't trust these platforms. it's sad bc the show could've been really great if they'd had more time to work with. it was good but you can feel the crunch for time imo

-like it's a tv show.... the whole thing is getting more time w the characters (yes the entire thing of all tv shows)..... i just keep thinking, how different is this to the movie exactly. ya it's more faithful the book but what else? it's been eons since i last sawthe movie lol but idk im just thinking.

i'm back hehe and i watched the tmap special!!! they're so cute but god did the cooking stress me out 😭 i would not be able to deal with them lmao but!! i also saw they uploaded another dance compilation 🥺🥺 i genuinely love those, i rewatch them all the time so i hope this one is as good (i'm sure it will be). I haven't seen any announcements tho so... whygeee come on... don't do this...

and yeah survivals are long af, usually poorly managed, and overall just really stressful 😔 i like watching them later since a lot of them are in new groups by then, so i watched pdx in like 2020 i think, when i got into victon! and like u said so many of them were currently active so it lessens the :( a bit. Same with ygtb ofc and p much every other survival show i watched besides iland. But it also feels really cool to watch enha now and think i contributed even a little bit by voting for them 🥹

hehe i just watched it too JNDSJHGB they have come a long way with cooking (thank u rakkidol) but yeah i will never not b stressed when they hand kpop boys knives 😂 tutu basically pouring an entire salt shaker into the sausage and eggs the first time, junkyu putting enough seaweed for 30 people into the soup, truly only team hyunsuk/dobby/yoshi was peaceful but that checks out given who was in it dbabsdjgh but as always tmap is so healing i NEED season 3 PLS ........ yet again also choi said 'oh we're getting ready for our comeback hehe' like girl are you bc i'm still waiting ... i mean i know whygee has been announcing the bp stuff first so i'm hoping that trsr will be up next :< u would think such a large company could manage to manage multiple groups at one time but they really love to not do that.

i also can only watch survival shows later when i'm invested in the outcome haha i will rewatch groups reality show series a million times over before i watch any survival shows. but it is cool to see how far everyone has come, esp with confidence and their bonds!

bad buddy ep 7 (thoughts)

me, every week: i’m not gonna do another one of these.

also me, every week: but...FEELINGS.

anyway, i have absolutely nothing insightful to say this ep bc it was mostly just me screaming and/or crying the entire way through. this is essentially just commentary as i rewatch this ep for the nth time...but i’ve already come this far so let’s go 😂

ngl i’m not generally the hugest fan of time skips, but i can see why it’s necessary here. it needs to feel like their challenge has been going on for awhile. the both of them are too stubborn (and love competing with one another too much) to cave that easily. also, it gives the both of them the time to explore this new dimension to their relationship freely without having to define anything yet.

not them exchanging flirty texts from the get go 😭 and in sugar daddy/sugar baby talk...starting the courting in this ep off with a bang, i see...

i love when the classical music starts playing as soon as the scene switches over to pran’s house with his parents (like what happened in ep 1 between both families). sets a very different, distinct tone from the back and forth sibling bickering that we get after between pat and paa.

i know paa’s always stunning, but she looks so gorgeous with her new makeover (love is just soooo pretty in general though wbk)!! this is def signalling the start of a new chapter and i’m so ready :)))

i have such a soft spot for every pat and paa interaction bc their relationship is so relatable to me. it’s exactly how my brother and i interact with one another tbh so i love seeing how close they are and how much they care for each other through all their snarky (but loving) jabs at one another. they genuinely feel like siblings and they’re just so cute.

it’s so great that they’ve finally revealed that pran’s parents aren’t homophobic at all!! so we def know that the conflict won’t be rooted in homophobia on their end at least...it’ll all be about how they hate pat’s family. if anything, that just makes me even MORE intrigued about what happened to cause such bad blood between them all.

honestly, the scene between pran and his parents was kind of cute bc they’re both so reassuring at first...at least until it’s soured by pran’s mum forbidding pran to like the neighbours’ kids. my heart already hurts for these boys and their parents don’t even KNOW yet.

if someone projected a picture of me in class like that i’d be completely mortified omg...good thing their professor was chill with it. then again, who doesn’t want to see pran’s cute dimples 😂

WHAT DID I SAY ABOUT INKPAA. IT’S HAPPENING. the way we see ink’s face from paa’s pov, all blurry before coming into focus...the hand holding...my HEART. they’re adorable. i love them so much already ;;;

the architecture play essentially being pat and pran’s love story is very meta of them (hopefully, it doesn’t end like the love story between kwan and riam did though...i refuse to even think of it as an option).

it’s interesting how in the beginning, i thought it was sweet that wai pushed pran into performing in the freshy day concert (i guess, also bc that was something that pran clearly wanted to do), but here we’re seeing the first sign this ep of wai’s pushiness and irresponsibility. like i didn’t think anything of this the first time i watched it until the scene where wai goes to pran’s room later on...but in hindsight, it’s very clear to see how they were building towards that with wai.

while pat’s parents do seem to give pat quite a bit of freedom, his dad does seem to have certain standards that he still wants pat to abide by (eg. winning the freshy day contest, getting mvp in rugby). he keeps using that “don’t ruin my reputation” line...which has me worried bc it makes me feel like his stance when it comes to finding out about pat and pran’s relationship will be a lot more rooted in homophobia (esp since he doesn’t seem to hate pran’s mum as much as pran’s mum hates him). i really hope that i’m wrong in this, and that at least ONE set of these parents will be able to see past the childishness of their feud but maybe that’s having too much faith in them idk...

the difference between pat and paa’s sides of the room is so cute. it’s even cuter that pat let his little sister have the bed instead of him :’)

literally the last person paa should be asking for handwriting analysis is pat 😭 this boy does not have a good track record with this. he doesn’t have a CLUE omg.

according to paa, all the girls that pat’s ever liked have always taken advantage of him in some way though :( first, the girl that dumped him after he bought her a surf skate, and now this girl that tricked him into buying her items in online games. pat...

pat was out of the door the second pran messaged him (he’s got it so bad)...only for pran to be asking him to help him with his printer i-

though tbf, if pran asked me for help all soft and sweet the way he did, i’d do anything he wanted me to do too so...there was no way pat would have been able to resist. the way they flirt with one another makes me so SHY...and i’m just watching it.

this game between them is so fun to watch, but also absolute torture!!!!!! pat acting all cool, calm and collected by turning pran’s flirting back on him and feeding him with his own food (and managing to hold on until he was back in his room before having his breakdown over how overwhelmed pran ACTUALLY made him)?? i love him. i laughed while punching my own pillow too.

INK TO THE RESCUE. okay, but she’s so cool?? the way she shooed those boys away?? if someone did that for me, i would also fall in love with them js.

so here we have another glimpse at wai trying to get pran to do his work for him even though pran never agreed to it in the first place. at this point, it still feels like it’s just a friend innocently asking for a little bit of help, so i don’t think anyone would think that much about it when watching for the first time too. but knowing how this turns out, it def makes wai’s actions feel a lot more sly and underhanded.

the montage!!!!!!!!!! the cuteness of it all!!!!!!!!!!!! i love that they turned their secret admirer gifts from ep 2 into a thing again as they try to win each other over. holding hands at their bus stop!!!!!!! who do i have to pay for a longer scene of this.

i LOVE how pran’s fondness for pat always ends up oozing out in his expressions whenever he even just thinks about him. he’s got it real bad too.

THE TENSION IN THE LIBRARY SCENE. I WAS NOT READY. i can’t stand them 😭😭😭

their dynamic, as always, is just *chef’s kiss*. i love that pat keeps the game going by pretending that he’s too lazy to go to pran’s place for nong nao...it’s like he’s provoking pran into taking a step into his space this time (his room), and pran responds by not backing down and taking him up on the offer. and so boldly too?? pran’s become so confident and i love that for him.

i do not believe that pran’s buying pat’s sick act for a SECOND...but hey, if that’s how pat wants to play the game, he’ll play the game ;) as long as they both get to spend more time together, i don’t think either of them cares whether he’s faking it or not.

there’s so much product placement in this ep but idec?? not when they’re giving us scenes like THIS. absolutely masterful advertising. i have nothing more to add to this bc my mind just blanks out whenever i get to the so-called ‘sponge bath’ scene.

they love the game way too much for either of them to give in, which i both love and find frustrating bc the willpower these two have to NOT start making out with each other after this tickle fight of theirs?? and to think they’ve done this for MONTHS. amazing.

paa almost busting in on them on top of each other made me laugh so much though. they were both so sus about it too 😂

so this is the third time that wai’s asking for pran’s help with the architecture play, and you can see how the way he asks for help has been amping up each time (at first he just asks pran to help him, then he asks for ideas, and now he’s asking pran to fill in for him at the auditions). and although pran is always hesitant, he always ends up giving in when wai begs him.

pran realising how jealous pat is of wai and making the most of it. smart. anyway, i find this scene so funny. pran’s facial expressions directed at pat when wai’s not looking are hilarious. he knows EXACTLY what he’s doing and good for him!!

why is wai’s first reaction always to fight 😭 but i was not expecting that wai and paa scene at all...and while i’m not here for anything happening between them, i’m really intrigued to see where this is going to go once he finds out that that’s pat’s sister...

prob an unpopular opinion, but i have a soft spot for korn...we’ve barely gotten any of him in the last few eps, but at least he has a line here. makes me wonder how he’s gonna be involved in this whole mess bc i don’t think it’s a coincidence he just showed up here...

i love when p’aof incorporates the actors’ actual skills in his dramas (like he did with earth and his flute playing in atots too). anytime i get to see more of ohm playing the thai xylophone is a fine time by me :)

pat straight up admitting that he basically only auditioned for the main lead so he could hit on pran in public...this boy has absolutely no filter and it’s glorious.

pran getting jealous over ink and pat eating dinner together so he brings wai to the same restaurant to make pat jealous too is SO incredibly petty and i love it!! i have a love/hate relationship with jealousy in dramas (context and relationship status usually determines how i feel about it). in this case, i really love it bc firstly, we know that neither ink or wai like pat or pran in that way (so they’re not hurting anyone/leading anyone on when they play these games). secondly, they KNOW they’re both intentionally trying to make each other jealous so everything is all out there in the open. my fave part of this whole thing is that although they both know they’re trying to make each other jealous, they STILL get jealous anyway. they’re so ridiculous, but it’s SO much fun to watch. esp bc of wai’s utter confusion (his face when pran was wiping the food away from his mouth was adorable), and ink being all wtf when pat was trying to feed her more wontons (the way she called him out...i genuinely just love her SO MUCH).

back to the play, and this chart guy sucks...why even audition for the play if you’re not gonna put any effort in whatsoever??

i love how pat noticed that pran’s door hanger was a sad face before he knocked. i think it’s sweet how he noticed the door hanger from the very beginning (even before he knew it was pran that was in the room opposite him). he’s so observant with things like this. i just love that he changed his original intention for coming over into cheering pran up the moment he saw the sad face, and how gloomy pran seemed due to the play situation.

pat always knows just how to cheer pran up too. he’s so playful, and pran’s so orderly and structured when it comes to everything in his life...except when it comes to pat. i can absolutely see why pran would be in love with him. apart from all the really caring things that pat does for him, he’s just so spontaneous and fun. like this splash of colour in pran’s everyday life (i mean, he literally paints pran’s cheek here). i say this every time, but fr NO ONE can make pran smile the way pat does. he just can’t help himself, and it bleeds out in his actions, like him tracing a heart with the cotton pad on pat’s face 😭 (which btw is one of the most adorable things i’ve ever seen in anything ever). they’re just SO IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER. like they still won’t admit it at this point, but the heart eyes when they look at each other?? the tenderness?? the care?? they’re in love, your honour. case closed.

things i love about this scene:

that pran reciprocates pat’s actions and cleans pat’s face without him even asking for it.

pat asking pran to move closer and pran actually doing it first before the both of them inch closer together...like they’re getting closer and closer to a middle ground.

pran’s heart shape on pat’s face!!!!!!!!!! i will never get over this.

the comfort and familiarity between them. they just LOOK like they’re in love (and that’s on ohm and nanon’s acting and chemistry bc they’re constantly knocking it out of the park and making every butterfly in the world take up residence in my chest).

the way they make me feel more single than i’ve ever felt in my entire life but idec bc i’m living vicariously through them and just want them to be happy!!

ahh, and so we finally get to the the scene all that wai build up was leading to. it really was irresponsible of wai to take on so much at one time if he wasn’t going to be able to cope...and then to dump that on pran. it would have been one thing if he had just begged pran like he did during the rugby practice scene...but the way he guilt tripped pran into accepting his position by saying he was basically gonna flunk out if he didn’t leaves a bad taste in my mouth. the way he asks for help gets progressively more sneaky and manipulative every time. pran cares so much for the people that he loves, so it makes me sad to see someone, his best friend no less, take advantage of him like that. esp since he’s already done so much for wai (eg. rescuing him from getting beat up by the engineering gang, finding a sponsorship for the bus stop and coming up with so much of the design himself, writing the song they performed for freshy day, filling in for him when he couldn’t go to the auditions).

idk if i’m thinking too much into it, but the fact that he brought the guitar also makes me feel like he was reminding pran of the favour he did by keeping it for him. just so pran would more be more willing to accept taking on his responsibilities :/

i totally understand pat’s feelings here though. the guitar, like their song, is something really precious to him. he kept it hoping that one day he would be able to give it back to pran, but pran gave it to WAI to keep of all people. the same person that he performed ‘their’ song with. it’s a sore spot for pat. the thing is, he obviously doesn’t know that the reason pran gave it to wai in the first place was bc it reminded pran too much of pat though...of something that he thought he could never have at the time :(

literally rolling my eyes every time this chart guy is on the screen, but so glad that pran stood up to him. he’s been so disrespectful this entire time. honestly, toto (as the director) should have been the one to say something about it to him before pran...

and we’re back on the rooftop again!! their (our) fave spot. i’ve seen some people say that they thought it was strange that pat got over how mad he was so quickly, but you can see in this scene that he’s still mad. it just comes across as more passive aggressive instead of the silent treatment that he was giving pran from before. i just think pat's not really the type to hold grudges tbh...and that he knows what a tough position pran is in atm. he still came when pran asked to meet him, so even if he’s mad, he’s had some time for the anger to blow over and he’s still willing to hear pran out. but that doesn’t mean he’ll make it easy for pran just quite yet.

i also think that he def knows what a big step it is for pran to be willing to give in and lose the challenge in order for pat to take over the role of riam. it’s kind of pran’s way of making amends with him over what happened too, whilst also giving pran the excuse he needs for them to finally scratch the bet and progress to the next stage of their relationship (as he implies). like he said, they’re both too tight-lipped to do it of their own accord, so they need something to push one of them into confessing for good and ‘losing’ the challenge.

pat telling pran to confess publicly bc he KNOWS pran would never do it, but then turning it into his own grand romantic gesture instead...THIS BOY.

i know this has already been talked about, but the lighting in this scene!! how pran’s in the dark as toto yells at him, before it changes to pat announcing his arrival as riam with the spotlight on him, back to pran again this time with the light spilling over him now too. i love this.

AND THEN THE FLASHBACK WHERE WE SEE PAT’S BASICALLY ALREADY CONFESSED TO HIM IN PUBLIC THROUGH THE AUDITION. every time i see this scene my cheeks hurt from smiling so hard. i can’t do this!!!!!!!!! i know that it’s technically not an official confession, but he’s extended the olive branch. he says the ‘lines’ with such sincerity. so heartfelt and sweet, almost like he’s assuring pran that whoever ‘loses’ is never really going to lose. since they’re both in love anyway, they just won’t admit it. he answered the question pran wanted to know. i think that’s part of the reason why it’s so easy for pran to admit to losing the challenge on the rooftop. he’s already assured that whatever happens, it won’t be the end of them. it just comes down to who’s the one big enough to put an end to the teasing and commit fr. and that’s his answer to pat’s question too.

can i also just say that the music choices on this show are a++++++ even just hearing the score in this scene is making my heart blow up. there are legit tears in my eyes :’)))

how it goes from past pran looking at pat with all the love in the world during the audition scene, to present pran grinning ear to ear at pat as he plays the thai xylophone, had me CHOKED up. that’s all pat ever wants to see...if i were pran, i too, would have given in and realised right then and there that there was no point fighting it anymore. no more pretending that the game matters anymore. it’s all in for the both of them from that exact moment.

what gets me so much about this drama (about pat and pran) is that their whole love story is just sooooooooo sweepingly ROMANTIC. it’s not love at first sight, but this gradual build up of love and care for each other over the course of their lives. they have this deep history together that we’re still slowly piecing together bit by bit, so we get to see them gradually grow to respect and understand one another despite their circumstances. it’s really easy to see how they end up falling in love with one another, not just bc of the grand gestures like this, but also bc of the smaller moments where pat tries to help pran and cheer him up, or when pran cooks for pat and looks after him in general (eg. make up remover scenes, taking care of him when he’s ‘sick’). their relationship is fun and they’re ultra competitive, but they’re always willing to back down and swallow their pride during the moments that really matter. that, to me, is what love is all about.

just like in this moment, where pat swallows down any anger he might feel about the guitar (and wai taking advantage of pran), if it means that he can lessen any of pran’s burdens and make life easier for him...since pran is way more important to him than any silly bet. like he says, “if my victory puts my boyfriend in trouble, i’d rather lose” 😭

what makes pat’s gesture as romantic as it is, is that instead of pran being pressured into confessing bc of the predicament he’s in, pat gives pran what he needs without asking for anything back in return. he teases him about it at first bc he’s pat and that’s what he does, but he knows in reality what a big deal it is for pran to even think about caving first...and that it also means that he’s ready. they’re past this exploratory phase of their relationship.

i’m still crying over that scene on the stage where everyone else is moving in the dark at the back of the stage, and the two of them are sitting there front and centre, light illuminating them ;;; beautiful. like they’re in their own little world, frozen in time while everything else is going on.

i really like how pat brought up what pran said about how his wish was to cook a favourite dish for someone he liked. esp since pran’s love language is clearly food (asking pat if he’s eaten, constantly cooking for him, etc.). the way they’ve turned teasing each other with food (but never actually feeding each other) into part of their game makes pran finally feeding pat, the person he likes, with his favourite dish so meaningful (it’s his way of confessing too), and pat’s aware. that’s why he’s so hesitant to eat at first...like he’s afraid pran is gonna tease him again, only this time he doesn’t. it’s so cute.

i love, love, love how pran wipes the food away from his mouth bc it was the thing that made pat most jealous (slamming the table and everything) when they were trying to make each other jealous during the noodle shop scene. the total contrast between how he casually wiped wai’s mouth and how he does it with so much fondness and affection when it comes to pat...the difference is so clear.

it’s funny how it was never any of the sexy/teasing stuff that got them to give in, but it was them showing each other they cared that finally did it :’) and i love that all those cute moments from before they became official were almost all sponsors, but this scene, pat’s audition confession and his grand romantic gesture...that was all them. no sponsors whatsoever.

the sniff kisses and the peck kisses!!!!!!!!!!! i was not READY. i’m just so glad that they have happy kisses now!! as much as i love the ep 5 kiss with my whole soul, it’s really nice to see them kiss when they’re so much more relaxed and stable in their feelings now. they both know exactly where they stand with one another and it shows!!

i’m just so in love with their entire dynamic. i love how they’ve retained that same essence that makes their relationship so unique since the beginning (their competitiveness will always be there), but it also changes with every new ep. we’ve seen them go from ‘enemies’, to sort of friends but not really, to something more, to teasing each other but STILL not admitting their feelings, and now to official boyfriends. we’re seen their relationship progress from each and every stage and it’s why we all feel so invested in them. we’ve gotten to see them mutually fall in love with each other every step of the way.

the next challenge for them was always going to be the most difficult, so i’m glad that we had a fluffy one this ep to tide us over for the next eps. i think we’re really going to need it for the upcoming ones now that they’re official but will have to be even more careful keeping their relationship secret from their friends and family :( the stakes are higher than ever for them now.

i’m looking forward to it bc i want to see them overcome all of these obstacles together, but i’m also really, really worried for them...in the end, all i want is for the two of them to be happy. i know we’ve still got some happy moments coming up this next ep, so i’m just gonna hold onto them as tight as i can until the storm inevitably hits.

literally lives in my head rent free. so much can be deduced from that line alone but esp when looked at with the rest of kurt/nick’s dynamic. i Will Not rewatch a single scene in preparation for this rant bc frankly i do not need to i just Know Things when it comes to kurt

but like. its pretty clear that even though kurts the one in charge around camp that nick calls the shots, it takes exactly 0 seconds for him to convince kurt that ziggy has to stay at camp (seemingly for the third or fourth time since this is Strike Five) and kurt backs down without hesitation, just falls for every little word out of nicks mouth. even though im pretty sure its stated that nicks on his first year as counselor? kurt definitely isnt if hes running the show, which then makes me think that kurt was still following nick around and taking orders from him while nick was a camper which honestly just. Speaks To the level of power nick had over him i think

like i definitely think some level of what she’s saying is bc Everyone in shadyside bows down to the goode family but the way she says it is clearly So Personal and the way it makes kurt turn away and run a hand through his hair with a sigh and go “i hate that little bitch” just proves that she Knows What She’s Talking About and its definitely not the first time she’s called him out on being absolutely Whipped

and yes this has nothing to do specifically with that line but the fact that we later see kurt literally grasping at nick and nick giving him instructions on how to save everyone and nick following instructions down to the letter i think just further reinforces that he follows every little command that nick gives him without second thought, probably sees nick as a leader inherently because of his family, potentially even thinks nick is gonna end up taking his role as head counsellor as soon as he’s had more than one year as a counsellor. (also i cant believe nick did All That on his first year as counsellor. did he really not want to come back for another year)

BUT ALSO i think its very interesting that he also immediately jumps to “did you do this” when he sees nick all bloody and again that has nothing to do w “some things never change” but i Am Intrigued and i think it tells us A Lot about the kurt/nick dynamic without having to explicitly say anything like kurt clearly admires and looks up to nick a lot with how quick he is to follow him around like a lost puppy but the fact that he not only thinks nick is entirely capable of killing joan but the fact that its his immediate thought when nick is bloody? he doesnt think someone else is dead he specifically thinks nick did it. thats Interesting to me and i just think it says a Lot which also makes me wonder like. what if he’s only following nick around so much out of something kind of like Fear where he’s somehow seen or worked out that nick is capable of Bad Things and he’s just working Very Hard to be on nick’s good side. with how shitty kurts mom is and yet how attached he is to her it’s not hard to believe that kurt would align himself with someone who ultimately reminds him of her, be it due to having A Lot of power over him (and everyone else) or due to the general attitude.

this got long and i feel like i actually didnt talk about that line at all but. the way nick kind of looks Exhausted when she says it and the way it obviously annoys kurt even more just makes it Very Clear in my head that nick is the boss of kurt (and by extension the Whole Camp) and everyone knows it

YES. do i ever omg. a good chunk of these will be children's books if that is alright bc that's where my love for this mode of storytelling really birthed itself. well, that and the arthur tv show bc childhood me was positively enthralled by the idea of a group of friends all living within relative walking distance of each other and being able to eat ice cream at the same shop every afternoon. there was an intimacy to it that fascinated me, as silly as it sounds

the penderwicks by jeanne birdsall - this series is a loose, modern retelling of little women that mires itself in the atmosphere of comforting, lively niches and the mountainous landscapes of the american northeast. jeanne birdsall used to do around three to four years of research between writing each book and i think it lent itself so well to what she wrote bc i was pulled effortlessly into the plot each time. the sense of camaraderie between this small collective of people as you follow them across the course of many years is so endearing and it's probably the defining small town book series for me

main street by anne m. martin - most people know anne m. martin bc of the babysitters club. i know her bc of this series! it's about two girls whose parents die in an accident, so they're taken in by their grandmother. she lives in this quiet town where the sense of community is so intimate, esp bc she lives in a row house! there's about eight houses on one street all connected to each other through secret doors in their attics and the neighbors as such are very close. i love the depth of humanity martin develops in the characters, esp bc it really touches upon how each person you know is dealing with their own struggles that you may not be entirely privy to, and then there is a series long plot around the town's history that really helps to illustrate how community prospers and evolves over time

anne of green gables by l. m. montgomery - ok this is a bit of a self evident answer but nonetheless, i feel compelled to include it. this is probably the defining small town story classic, i think? the series builds itself upon anne's imagination and how that not only fleshes out green gables (and her other hometowns) in its simple beauty but also approaches the very real personas of the people she grows up with, as compared to her more romantic and idealized aspirations for herself. it's simultaneously an exploration in romance and realism through the lens of a small but growing community around anne, and montgomery's prose really makes it a magical experience. the romance is also to die for oh my god one of the best slow burns in history, nothing will ever compare to the pure drama that is anne shirley and gilbert blythe's years long love story

beartown by fredrik backman - the tone of this book is pretty drastically different from the other recommendations here but it's nonetheless one i would put forth bc it very closely analyzes the flaws in mindset that can arise from small town living as well. there's a lot of sadness and grief, but it manages to balance this fine line of critiquing narrow mindsets and resistance to change while believing in the ability of a community to come together and mature. it's just. . . very real, and i stayed up listening to it until 4am one night and couldn't stop crying bc the raw emotion of it all really touched me. the random closeness between certain members of the town really got to me, esp in the sequel novel, us against you. just be sure to check out the trigger warnings before reading

aurora county trilogy by deborah wiles - oh my god. ohhhhh my god. you would not believe the memories i have around these books. i remember listening to love, ruby lavender in the car when i was maybe ten or so and positively falling in love with this grieving ten year old girl, and her mom who writes about recipes using zucchini, and her grandmother whom she rescues chickens with. each book in this trilogy centers itself around a child dealing with the death of a loved one, and i think that is a very unique experience to read about, bc children are already dealing with enough at that age. they have to figure out how they're going to fit in, how they're going to navigate the rest of their lives without someone they love so much, and in this small town setting, how to share this grief with a bunch of people they don't want to share that grief with. the books are deeply sad and simply honest, but in a way that's very cathartic to read about at any age

because of winn dixie by kate dicamillo - it's been years and years since i read this book or rewatched the movie but here's another rec that centers itself in a child dealing with grief, albeit not grief over death, but abandonment and isolation. opal's bond with winn-dixie leads her to meet and bond with several people of the new town she moves to with her father, and those building friendships become a way for her to process her grief and move forward from it. i have very vague memories of it now but i remember enjoying how eccentric each of the characters was

beach read by emily henry - this is a much newer rec than everything else on this list but so well deserved! this made me cry my eyes out at 4am it was so crazy. january and gus are two people who knew each other in college and coincidentally meet again as neighbors in a small town, where both have travelled to try to beat their writing slumps and chug out a new book. as a way to challenge themselves, they decide to write a book within the genre that the other person excels at, and doing research along that vein allows them to learn a lot more about each other than they initially thought they did. there's a lot of grief underpinning the story, and the people in the town aren't necessarily a huge focus, but i think the quiet of the setting really allows the emotion to permeate the whole thing and drawn you in, bc sometimes you just have more room to think and dwell and reflect when you're in a quiet corner of the country

i hope these are sufficient for now, but lmk if you'd like recs within other media too! i feel like i have a good chunk of dramas and tv shows that speak to this narrative setting

danny phantom, season 3, episodes 7-13 thoughts! cannot believe im finishing this series so fast. ...cannot believe it ended like that...uh. one of the weirdest finales to a show I think I've seen, it really stood out against the rest of the series, and not in a good way, in my opinion. I paused to yell in caps lock...several times, I think, out of anger... BUT. ANYWAY, HERE WE GO.

-the fentons putting the kids to Work in the lab, with NO SAFETY GEAR. AT ALL. THEY JUST GOT BACK FROM SCHOOL AND ARE TIRED!!! and when jack asked how danny his day was and danny tried to say it was bad jack cut him off :( for the 400th time, i am stealing these kids.

-maddie and jack IMMEDIATELY SELLING THEIR LAB AND WORK FOR A LOT OF MONEY. and danny cant get into the portal anymore, oh no!!! he could always just steal vlads I Guess.

-the 'sleepwalkers' designs were super cute in shape (kinda remind me of oogie boogie! pillow-cased shaped, which is appropriate for the 'king of dreams's minions) until I looked closer at their eyes. why do they look sewn shut!! (they open their eyes a few times, so they aren't, but they look like it...)

-I like how this show has been pretty consistent (with a few exceptions) about a Ghost Being Huge (or getting larger) = Very Powerful

-2 months of summer camping??? wtf, do camping things usually take that long?? I've never been to a camping...thing like that. but isnt that basically their entire summer??

-I don't know how to articulate how FRUSTRATING THAT IS. having him basically out himself and ''hold the world hostage'' does not track at all in my brain. like. he's always been scary because he is HUMAN, TOO. like, if he was 100% ghost, he'd be LESS scary, but vlad MASTERS has more power and influence than vlad PLASMIUS because of his position as mayor, his money, too, and his (supposed, s3 made me doubt it) intelligence/manipulation skills, and his being in good graces with jack made it HARD FOR DANNY. him outing himself for,, money and to 'control the world' i guess?? MONEY WAS NEVER HIS LIKE, MAIN GOAL. yeah obv he likes money and is materialistic and values his Rich Life, but hes got billions, the end goal? 1. getting maddie (and or danny as his son, but to me he always treated that as secondary) 2. ruining jack. this feels like they wanted to say 'oh he just wants POWER' which is. HMM?? OKAY?? obv he /does/ want power (usually over certain ppl, tho), but seeing him try to get it like this FELT WEIRD SOMEHOW. weird like the ep where he tried and failed to take over various historical civilizations, because like,, how is that realistically going to do anything for him?? just, being in that time forever and never seeing maddie aka Goal #1 again?? HELLO??? this was like that, but worse

-this was such a weird ending to an entire show. why did season 3 only have 13 episodes?? why did it feel so weirdly paced?? WHY WAS THE ENDING LIKE THAT. I think. I am going to pretend I did not see that. fucked up, dudes. I'm like...hm. I shouldn't have watched that because now I'm mad. valerie sweetie im SO sorry you shouldve been more present. it felt like..if they knew this season was going to be short, and the last season, they should've spent more time wrapping up EVERYONE'S plot lines for the entire season. imagine how cool it wouldve been if every single ep of season 3 was working towards something, a big, nice wrap up at the end, with nothing feeling TOO rushed because they'd been heading towards the End for the whole season....

I will probably end up writing a follow up full series thoughts post. In a couple of days so I can sit with my thoughts. BUT. overall, I really liked the show! (ignoring the finale and some of the moments that aged pretty poorly...) it was charming and a fun concept and very fun to watch in general :) and I am pretending the finale didnt happen <3 and I’m gonna dive RIGHT into the dp tags and mix fanart and posts in my queue, very excited to run and look at that 🏃🏻 (and, of course, make more fanart myself hehe >:3)

ALRIGHT, Suicide Squad (2021) Initial Thoughts!

(under a cut and Obvious Spoiler Warning! turn Back if You Dont Want To Be Spoiled)

okay overall i absolutely loved the movie! i can def see myself regularly revisiting this one & i'm excited to watch it again! original plan was to stream it w/ my dad but I ended up streaming at a friends house instead and that helped paint the experience a tad differently bc we're both annoying so we were commentating the entire time fjdakl;

The plot is VERY solid and very strong/tightly threaded. Something that I enjoyed w/ BoP ofc was that non-linear narrative, so coming back to something that kept the timeline very clear w/ only a couple sidetracks to catch up w/ other characters or to bring the audience back up to speed was *chefs kiss*. I was half expecting the initial beach sequence to be a Tone-setter for the audience & for a smash-cut the mission proper/as a "here's what a Mission Gone Wrong Looks Like" and was pleasantly surprised when it was very much Part Of the Current Mission!!! they really rolled out strong and then kept that momentum going!

Getting right away into spoiler territory now (again, srsly, you've had your chance to turn back lmao) I was a LITTLE surprised to see Boomerang as one of the casualties right at the start fdjlka; could be bc i do still have the '87 run on the brain, and Boomer feels like one of the Main Stays to me now?

God tho, having 90% of Who you Think are going to be part of the team get taken out so quick and brutally? Varying the deaths from recklessness to attempted desertion & the consequences spelled out so quickly just!!!! We'd been told over and over how Gunn wanted to pay homage to war films and it def shows! Both in that scene, and esp while the Squad is attacking Jotunheim (there were several moments that even my friend mac made some comments, pointing out lighting/camera decisions that just *chefs kiss* it rlly shows Vision)

There's so much I want to gush abt and my hearts rlly full for! The fight sequences! The soundtrack and score and SOUND DESIGN ESP!!! fading songs in & out and making most of them diegetic!!!! Or hell, the transitions being so fun & placed within the environments/scenes themselves!!! all these things that feel like homage to the Medium of Comics, while also being enhanced by the medium film!

To transition over to the plot itself again & esp to focus in on the characters:

Everyone had rlly solid arcs!!! They took that time to let some key players bond! Cleo & Robert's surrogate dad n daughter thing and Cleo & Nanaue's friendship esp being endearing to me ahh! contrast that against Chris vs Robert's rivalry set-up and confrontation pay-off!!! I loved that they did include a Twist of Peacemaker working a submission for Waller in the midst of the Main Objective bc while I don't 100% love that they've stuck w/ Waller seeing the Squad as Expendable (bc that damn well wasn't the OG squad but c'est la vie), Waller having a contingency/secret objective absolutely tracks with her character.

while we're on slight negatives, I did feel very disappointed by Polka-Dot Man not having... closure. I was kind of hoping that he would be our Floyd/Werner stand-in, as a character who gets to move past his suicide wish... And I suppose for a brief moment, he had but... It was still a little sad to see the moment undercut (but I can appreciate that others will like the Joke in that Gallows Humor sense). Just made me personally a lil sad to see *shrug*

To circle back around to '87 Squad comparisons, I really loved seeing more of the support team and even seeing some of those familiar names (Flo!!! Briscoe!!!), and the fact that they got to help at key points just!!! I can't remember the 2016 film as much (its been ages since I thought abt it and I don't remember ever rewatching it after the initial time tbh), but i vaguely remember Waller Disposing of her support team there and... idk, it felt cathartic to see more of them here and for them to feel like a weird coworking unit & even to see them go against her and give the Squad their help when they Knew it was the Right thing to do like!!!!

Again, I dont remember much of the first film, except that it felt like a passable popcorn movie. But this? This felt like something more. More cohesion btwn the characters, more synergy with what the director & cast wanted to bring and what WB was finally willing to let them do, more of what fans like me want to see from superhero movies.

Something that takes care to look at the source, give those gentle nods and acknowledgements, and still come out w/ something that feels Fresh and New. DC movies feel like they've been on a bit of an upswing, and I rlly do hope they keep that going.
