Judge Eileen R. Petersen (April 18, 1937 - April 25, 2023) an advocate for women’s and children’s rights, was born in Christiansted, Virgin Islands, and reared in Free Gut to Anna Leevy and Hugo Petersen. She received a scholarship to attend Hampton Institute, where she majored in English, receiving a BA and MA. She taught at the islands’ only public high school before returning to further her education and the desire to become a lawyer. She earned a JD from Howard University School of Law. She was admitted to practice law in DC. She studied toward an LLM at George Washington University Law Center.
She became a member of the VI Bar Association, she served as an Assistant Attorney General. In 1971, she became the first woman to be appointed judge in the territory of the Virgin Islands of the US by the VI Governor Melvin Evans. Being the first in that position, when she walked down those small, narrowed Caribbean streets, people would point their fingers at her because seeing a female judge was unusual. Her swearing-in as a judge was even nontraditional in that a robe and the lack of guests representing the legal fraternity had yet to be ordered for the occasion.
In 1990, she was chairman of a panel on Family Law at the World Peace through Law Conference held in Beijing. She was inducted into the Virgin Islands Women’s Hall of Fame.
After retiring as the VI Superior Court judge in 1992, she was appointed the first Chair of the VI Casino Control Commission. In 2018, the VI Legislature voted and approved Bill No. 32-0193-An Act to honor and commend the Honorable Judge Eileen R. Peterson for her community and legal work by naming the building that houses the Casino Control Commission in her honor.
She was a member of the Mu Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Movie Reviews:
DoryDarko: Unthinkable raises a question which has been an issue for many people all over the world for a very long time, and especially since 9/11. This question is, is it ever justified to torture an individual to save the lives of many? And if the answer is yes, how far can you go?
This issue is indeed a very sensitive subject and I think it takes guts for any filmmaker to put it out there in the open like Gregor Jordan did. Add to that the clever fact that he doesn’t actually make a choice, but rather lets the audience decide on whatever they want to think and feel, and you have a pretty gutsy and controversial concept.
In a nutshell, this film is about a man of American descent who has become a Muslim and has now, as an act of terrorism, planted 3 nuclear bombs in 3 major American cities which will go off in four days. Screenwriter Peter Woodward made some very tactical decisions considering the characters in the story. They are all somewhat stereotypical, but this is no bother because they’re all there for a reason. Carrie-Anne Moss, as an FBI investigator, represents the conscience, the sensitivity and the struggle to make the right decision. Samuel L. Jackson is her polar opposite; the brutal, rational, stone cold “interrogator” who does what he does because he’s the only one who can and willing to do it. The means he is willing to go to in order to get his subject to talk ...

A new study on marine mammal longevity suggests significant progress in animal welfare
- By Nuadox Crew -
A recent study led by Species360 and University of Southern Denmark Research Scientist Dr. Morgane Tidière; and co-authored by 41 researchers from various institutions worldwide has revealed significant improvements in the longevity and welfare of marine mammals in zoos and aquariums.
The study employed statistical methods similar to those used for assessing improvements in human population welfare, utilizing 200 years of data from the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) which is the largest database of information on wildlife in human care. It focused on four marine mammal species: the harbor seal, California sea lion, polar bear, and common bottlenose dolphin.
Here are key findings and highlights:
Longevity advancements: The research found that these four marine mammal species are living longer in zoological institutions compared to the past, primarily due to advances in animal care practices centered on animal welfare including veterinary care, environmental enrichment, nutrition, and positive reinforcement training. The life expectancy of the studied species has increased three-fold, with a notable decrease (up to 31%) in deaths during the first year of life over the last century in zoos and aquariums.
Comparative lifespan: Marine mammal species in zoos and aquariums are living two to three times longer than their counterparts in the wild.
Collaborative efforts: These improvements have been made possible through the collaboration of regional and national zoo associations, accreditation standards, breeding programs, shared databases, and professional networks, fostering knowledge sharing and collectively improving animal welfare.
Global impact: The study underscores that these results reflect the average welfare of marine mammals in Species360 member facilities and do not represent a global minimum standard. Nonetheless, they highlight positive progress in the management and care of animals in leading zoological facilities.
Policy implications: The study's findings may inform future policy decisions regarding the welfare of animals in zoos and aquariums. Preliminary results have already influenced legislative decisions in France and Spain, guiding evidence-based choices for marine mammal care in these settings.
Overall, the study indicates a positive trend in enhancing the welfare and longevity of marine mammals in zoos and aquariums, driven by advances in management practices and collaborative efforts within the professional zoo and aquarium community. The results contribute to ongoing discussions about the well-being of animals in these institutions and encourage others to invest in improving their animal management practices.

¡Buenas a todes!
