Week 18.4/52: May 2nd - May 8th 2022 | Duft and Co Bakehouse & Exploring Abbotsford 🥐
Last day in Abbotsford for this week. We woke up a bit earlier than usual because we had to check out. Our first stop was a super popular bakery. We went at 11am and it was already mostly sold out... we ended up just getting their croissants. Sunny had the London Fog one and it was actually really good although very sweet I don’t know if I could have handled eating an entire one AHHAHAHA I was like good after one bite lol. I had just the original croissant and it was so crispy and delicious. I love bread. We walked around the area for awhile after eating just exploring shops and taking photos. It’s surprisingly photogenic! Super cute buildings and wall art as well. Our last stop was Costco for gas/shopping/hot dogs. We went to our shift 1.5 hours early because we had nothing else to do. Spent our shift watching random videos of bilibili because we were so bored (I only shot 3 students...)... and then she drove us back in the evening. Yay.

Robert Garioch Sutherland was born in Edinburgh on 9th  May 1909.
His father was a painter and semi-professional fiddler and his mother a music teacher. Young Robert was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, and the University of Edinburgh, graduating MA (with honours) in English Language and Literature in 1931. He won the Sloan Prize for verse in Scots in 1930.
During the Second World War Garioch served in the Royal Signals, but was a prisoner of war between 1942 and 1945 - the subject of his moving memoir, ‘Two Men and a Blanket’. Both before and after the war he worked as a school teacher in the London area, a profession he later took up when he returned to Edinburgh until the mid-1960s.
Robert Gairloch then became a lexicographer on the 'Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue’, and was also a transcriber at the School of Scottish Studies. He was appointed Writing Fellow at the University of Edinburgh in 1971.
Garioch had met Sorley MacLean at Edinburgh University, and poems by both appear in 17 Poems for 6d, published by Garioch.  Scots was spoken in the family home and Garioch wrote mostly in Scots all his writing life, but as somewhat of an outsider to the Scottish Renaissance – he was never part of MacDiarmid’s crowd. His Scots was not dictionary-bound in the way MacDiarmid’s was but while he based it on his spoken Edinburgh Scots dialect, he was happy to borrow whatever he thought appropriate.  He cared deeply about the craft of writing and was adept at many different verse forms, especially the sonnet, which he used ‘with unsonnet-like tonalities’
Not only writing about Edinburgh, he also tackled larger themes. ‘The Wire’, for instance, is a long allegorical poem on death and imprisonment, based on his time as a prisoner of war; ‘The Muir’ explores science and religion. Both a wee bit too long for the poems I like to read.
His main impact was achieved through his well-crafted shorter poems. My type of verse, nothing too challenging, that keep my attention, which I admit often wavers, my school reports a testament to this, often had the words “Easily distracted” written on them.
Serving as wry observations of Scottish life, especially in Edinburgh, the poems retain a large fanbase to this day, and Garioch is remembered with an inscription in Makars’ Court outside the Writers’ Museum. The Aberdonian poet  Roderick Watson  said Garioch’s poems “(were) ‘the brilliant fusions of Humanist and modern observer which have established his reputation as one of the greatest of modern Scottish poets.’
He died in the spring of 1981
Here’s the hard bit, trying to choose a poem to highlight Garioch’s talent, I have chosen one that he wrote in praise of a poet often overlooked as he died at such a young age, but one that perhaps would have been as famous as Burns had he reached a maturity, Robert Ferguson, he writes of his debt to a poet whom he appeared to regard as his spiritual predecessor.  I too can relate to this as I have the title could be written for me as I have stood at the spot in the Canongate Kirkyard many times where Garioch must have as the chrysali of the poem may have materialised in his head. Like Garioch, when I am there I also think of Rabbie, as he must have stood, or "knelt” as he says, before the sad poets grave.
The pics are interesting, Gairoch is in all three, the second and third are by Fife painter Alexander Moffat, some of you might recognise the third, as I have posted it before, but not sure if it was on here or the Edinburgh group I am admin on, it is called “Poets Pub features 7 poets, including Gairoch, although as I said earlier, he was never a regular in Milnes Bar, where poest used to gather, the "pub” is actually an amalgam of a few bars in the area including The Cafe Royal and The Abbotsford. The other poets sitting at the tables are Norman MacCaig, Hugh MacDiarmid, Sorley Maclean, Iain Crichton Smith, George Mackay Brown, Sydney Goodsir Smith and  Edwin Morgan   The fourth pic is his inscription on Makars Court in the Old Town.
I’ve chosen the poem that I can directly relate to, At Robert Fergusson's Grave, is a place I have stood and indeed posted pics from through the years on here.
Canongait Kirkyaird in the failing year is auld and grey, the wee rosiers are bare, five gulls leam white agin the dirty air: why are they here?  There's naething for them here. Why are we here oursels?  We gaither near the grave.  Fergusons mainly, quite a fair turn-out, respectfu, ill at ease, we stare at daith - there's an address - I canna hear. Aweill, we staund bareheidit in the haar, murnin a man that gaid back til the pool twa-hunner year afore our time.  The glaur that haps his banes glowres back.  Strang, present dool ruggs at my hairt.  Lichtlie this gin ye daur: here Robert Burns knelt and kissed the mool.

Elevate Your Space: The Ultimate Guide to Wardrobe Design in Abbotsford
Tumblr media
Wardrobes are more than just storage spaces; they're essential elements of any home's organisation and aesthetics. In Abbotsford, a suburb known for its blend of historic charm and modern living, the right wardrobe design can transform a room, maximising space while enhancing style. Whether you're renovating your existing space or designing a new one, understanding the options and trends in wardrobe design can greatly enhance your living experience. This comprehensive guide will delve into the world of wardrobe design in Abbotsford, from space-saving solutions to stylish finishes.
Understanding Unique Style
Abbotsford's character is shaped by its rich history and diverse community. From its heritage buildings to its contemporary apartments, the suburb offers a mix of architectural styles. When it comes to wardrobe design, this diversity is reflected in the choice of materials, layouts, and finishes. Whether you prefer a classic look that pays homage to the suburb's past or a sleek, modern design that embraces its cosmopolitan vibe, there are endless possibilities to explore.
Space-Saving Solutions
In Abbotsford, where space can be at a premium, maximising every square inch is essential. Here are some space-saving wardrobe ideas to consider:
Sliding Doors: When opened, traditional hinged doors can occupy precious floor space. Sliding doors are perfect for cramped areas or smaller rooms since they slide easily along tracks.
Built-In Wardrobes: Custom-built wardrobes are tailored to fit your space perfectly, making the most of every nook and cranny. They can be seamlessly integrated into alcoves or recesses, creating a sleek and cohesive look.
Modular Systems: Modular wardrobe systems offer flexibility and versatility, allowing you to customise your storage solutions according to your needs. With adjustable shelves, drawers, and hanging rods, you can easily adapt the layout to accommodate changing storage requirements.
Materials and Finishes
The choice of materials and finishes can significantly impact the overall look and feel of your wardrobe. In Abbotsford, where a mix of old-world charm and contemporary design is prevalent, versatility is key. Here are following choices to think about:
Timber: Timber finishes add warmth and character to any space, making them a timeless choice. Opt for natural woodgrains for a rustic feel or sleek, lacquered finishes for a more modern look.
Mirror Accents: Mirrored wardrobe doors can help create a sense of space and light in smaller rooms, while also serving a functional purpose. Consider incorporating mirrored panels or accents to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your wardrobe.
Glass and Metal: Glass and metal accents add a touch of sophistication to any wardrobe design. Frosted or tinted glass panels can lend a contemporary feel, while metal hardware and handles can add a hint of industrial chic.
Trends in Wardrobe Design
Staying up-to-date with the latest trends can help you create a wardrobe that feels fresh and current. Here are some trends currently making waves in Abbotsford:
Sustainable Materials: With an increasing emphasis on sustainability, eco-friendly materials like bamboo, reclaimed wood, and recycled glass are gaining popularity in wardrobe design.
Integrated Lighting: Incorporating integrated lighting into your wardrobe design can enhance visibility and functionality, while also adding a touch of luxury. Consider LED strip lighting or sensor-activated lights for a modern touch.
Bold Colours and Patterns: Don't be afraid to make a statement with your wardrobe design. Bold colours like deep blues, emerald greens, and rich burgundies are trending in Abbotsford, adding personality and flair to any space.
Conclusion
Your wardrobe is more than just a place to store your clothes; it's a reflection of your style and lifestyle. In Abbotsford, where creativity and innovation thrive, finding the right wardrobe design can elevate your living experience. By incorporating space-saving solutions, choosing the right materials and finishes, and staying abreast of the latest trends, you can create a wardrobe that not only maximises storage but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home. So, whether you're renovating a heritage home or designing a contemporary apartment, let your wardrobe be a testament to the vibrant spirit of living.

Northshore Indigenous History
Tumblr media
Ancient Pathway: Kingsford Smith Drive
Hamilton and Breakfast Creek were recorded by Oxley as being riddled with many Aboriginal pathways, indicating it was frequently traversed.
One route went through what is now Fortitude Valley, crossing Breakfast Creek (roughly by the Abbotsford Road Bridge).
Aboriginal people were recorded often swimming over (side note: connection to water and the river is prevalent).
Side note: Developing a walkway that brings to light these ancient pathways would be an idea.
Tumblr media
The site saw extensive fishing… a visitor as early as 1836 described the entire road from Brisbane to Eagle Farm as an Aboriginal “fishing ground.”
The catch included swans, pelicans, eel, bream, whiting, bream, jewfish, flathead, mullet, eel, dolphin, river mussel and prawns.
Side note: Developing an artwork brief that brings to light Northshore’s history with the river and fishing.
Indigenous art research
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art is an expression of people’s identity, culture, spirituality and relationships to Country. It tells stories of ceremony and Creation and connects people to ancestors and kin.
The popularity of Australian First Nations art has also given rise to unethical trade and appropriation by unscrupulous people who have taken advantage of artists and the system.
The benefits of Indigenous art
Indigenous visual arts provides a means of cultural expression and are a vehicle for the maintenance and transmission of culture.
Used to promote health and wellbeing.
Improve the lives of Indigenous women and provide self esteem to young Indigenous people.
Go beyond purely economic and the quantifiable to enrich and sustain Indigenous culture.
Side note: brings light to the importance of partnering with real First Nations artists.
Aboriginal symbols
Australian Aboriginal symbols are visual forms of knowledge that express cultural intellect within a sense of place and spiritual space.
Creative expressions of knowledge are unique to each Aboriginal Nation as designs, symbols, techniques, and mediums are bound within customary laws associated to Creational periods.
Tumblr media
One of the most common symbols used is the circle, which represents cosmological aspects of cultural space and spiritual space…
Indicate forms of sacredness; expressions of connections to cultural place within mind, body, and emotions.
Side note: Cameron's article discusses the misinterpretations between these symbols and non-Indigenous people. It is important to provide information that correctly identifies the meaning of the artwork. Emphasising deep insight that influences cultural place and spiritual space in being connections. Once again emphasising the importance of partnering with real Indigenous artists.

Hey Sophie, I'm going to be in Melbourne soon! Do you have any tips for what to do, see, or eat?
Hey! Ah! How exciting! Melbourne's a really fun city to visit, and I feel really does have something for everyone.
Hmmm, tip wise, I think I'd say:
grab a Myki card for public transport. You can buy these at any news agent, train station or petrol station. Melbourne has a free inner-city tramzone, which is great for getting around the CBD, but you should also take advantage of Melbourne's incredibly good train network which'll open up the broader city to you. A Myki card works on all forms of public transport - buses, trams (for trams outside of the free tram zone) and trains - so they're pretty straight forward.
On that note, the PTV app is pretty useless for public transport (you're better off using Google maps tbh), but it does let you top up your Myki instantly via your phone, which makes it useful. The TramTracker app is very good for trams though, especially because you can type in the number of the tram you're on and know exactly which stops you're heading towards. The logos look like this: (trust the doggo)
Tumblr media
Don't drive in the city - it's a layer of hell.
Have a little bit of cash on you. Most places take cards or smart watches, but you'll need gold coins for certain things too, particularly accessing certain gardens or markets.
Pack for all weather. Melbourne's known for having four seasons in a day, and having lived here for almost five years now, it's not an exaggeration. Layering is your friend, and always have an umbrella!
Hook turns are a real thing here, and whether you're driving or just crossing the road, they're worth being aware of.
Places to visit
Melbourne's famous for its street art, and while you can just wander around and observe yourself, doing a tour is particularly fun (and makes sure you see the best stuff!)
Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is one of my favourite places to show out-of-towners (although that's probably partly just because it's me, haha). It's a museum of film, tv and games, and explores the moving image as both a form of commercial entertainment and as a form of art. Their cinema is often playing really interesting films too.
National Gallery Victoria is always worth checking out.
Chapel Street is known for it's little galleries, restaurants and indie shops, and makes for a fun day out.
Queen Vic Market and South Melbourne Market are both iconic and for good reason. They've been operational since the mid-1800s, and you can often feel that when you're in them. They can get packed though, so just a heads up.
I love love love heritage buildings and exploring history through place, so will always recommend checking out the National Trust's historic sites in Melbourne. Rippon Lea Estate is a personal fave and only about 20 minutes out of the CBD on the train. They shot parts of Miss Fisher there, and even if you don't get to tour the house (although I recommend you do!) even just exploring the gardens are beautiful.
Abbotsford Convent & Collingwood Children's Farm are right next door to each other and a pretty amazing day out.
If you fancy seeing a movie, my all time fave cinemas are The Classic and The Lido, which are owned by the same family. Either spot is worth checking out.
If you're looking to see a show or performance, you can look for the big ones at any of the big theatres, but for smaller, exciting indie stuff, I'd check out the programs at Malthouse, La Mama, Art House, Meat Market, and Footscray Community Arts Centre,
What to eat
Wellllll, this ultimately depends on your budget, haha, since Melbourne restaurants can run the gamut. Some of my favourite restaurants that are a bit more on the expensive side but great for a special occasion:
Maha's probably my favourite restaurant in Melbourne? It's modern Middle Eastern cuisine and their seafood in particular is divine. It's a set menu, and like I said, a little exy, haha.
Mabu Mabu is modern Australian First Nations (Torres Strait Islander) cuisine and is very good! They sell some of their own sauces too, and I highly recommend snagging their pineapple hot sauce! It's also very easy to get to, as it's located in Fed Square right next to the Koori Heritage Trust which often has Indigenous exhibitions on (and a great gift store if you're looking for anything to take home)
Chin Chin's - delicious South East Asian fusion cuisine. Again, a little exy.
Transformer - incredible vegetarian restaurant. They do both ala carte and a fixed menu. Highly recommend their fixed menu! They're also very good with dietary requirements, particularly if you're gluten free or if you have annoying allergies for a vegetarian restaurant like me, haha (tomato and eggplant).
Cheaper eats that are also delicious:
A little out in the South Side 'burbs, but Saigon Mamma is my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne.
Rice Paper Scissors is good too, as is Chocolate Buddha, Green Man's Arms, and oh! Studley Park Boathouse is a fave. It's beautiful location-wise with pretty standard (but good) pub eats, and they've got a lot of water birds you can feed and boats you can hire pretty cheap ($30 for a kayak, $40 for a row boat) to row along the Yarra River. It's also really close to the Convent + Children's Farm if you fancy making a day of it.
If you're willing to travel a little further out of inner Melbourne, I'd also suggest:
Healesville Sanctuary - the bird show is i n c r e d i b l e. I took my nephews last year and the older one still talks about it, haha.
Mornington Penninsula Hot Springs - Mornington Penninsula is a great day trip from Melbourne. It's only just over an hour drive, and it's pretty stunning. Full of wineries and beachy walks. The hot springs are so relaxing though, and really centring if you need it.
Mount Macedon - home of the Hanging Rock of Picnic at Hanging Rock fame! Plus it's just a beautiful area.
Cranborne Gardens - the Royal Botanical Gardens in the city are beautiful too, but I'm particularly partial to these ones.
Hope this gets you started, and just let me know if you have any other questions!

Unlocking Relief: Exploring the Benefits of Dry Needling Therapy
In the world of pain management, individuals seek solutions that provide effective relief without invasive procedures or lengthy recovery times. One such alternative gaining popularity is dry needling therapy. In Abbotsford, this innovative approach is revolutionizing the way people address various musculoskeletal issues. Let's delve into the intricacies of dry needling therapy, its benefits, and how it's transforming lives in Abbotsford.
Understanding Dry Needling Therapy:
Dry needling therapy in Abbotsford is a technique used by trained healthcare professionals to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on balancing energy flow, dry needling targets trigger points within muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. These trigger points are often responsible for referred pain and restricted movement.
The Process:
During a dry needling session in Abbotsford, a licensed practitioner inserts thin needles into targeted areas of the body, stimulating the trigger points. The needles used are solid, hence the term "dry," as opposed to hollow needles used in acupuncture. This technique aims to elicit a twitch response in the muscle, releasing tension and promoting healing.
Benefits of Dry Needling Therapy:
Pain Relief: By targeting trigger points, dry needling therapy helps alleviate chronic and acute pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches.
Improved Range of Motion: Tight muscles and restricted movement can hinder daily activities and athletic performance. Dry needling helps relax muscles and restore flexibility, enhancing overall mobility.
Faster Recovery: Athletes and active individuals in Abbotsford often turn to dry needling therapy to expedite recovery from sports injuries. The technique accelerates the body's natural healing processes, allowing individuals to return to their activities sooner.
Addressing Root Causes: Rather than masking symptoms, dry needling targets the underlying causes of pain and dysfunction. By releasing trigger points and improving muscle function, it addresses the source of the problem for long-lasting relief.
Minimally Invasive: Unlike surgical interventions, dry needling therapy is minimally invasive and typically well-tolerated by patients. It carries minimal risk of adverse effects when performed by a qualified practitioner.
The Importance of Qualified Practitioners:
In Abbotsford, it's crucial to seek dry needling therapy from licensed healthcare professionals with specialized training in the technique. Proper assessment and accurate needle placement are essential for safe and effective treatment. By choosing a reputable provider, individuals can trust that they are receiving high-quality care tailored to their specific needs.
Case Studies:
To illustrate the effectiveness of dry needling therapy in Abbotsford, let's explore a couple of case studies:
Sarah, a 35-year-old office worker, experienced chronic neck and shoulder pain due to poor posture and repetitive strain. After a few sessions of dry needling therapy, she noticed significant improvement in her pain levels and range of motion. With ongoing treatment and ergonomic adjustments, Sarah was able to manage her symptoms effectively and prevent further discomfort.
Michael, a competitive athlete, suffered from a hamstring strain that sidelined him from training and competition. Seeking a speedy recovery, he opted for dry needling therapy in Abbotsford. The targeted approach helped alleviate his pain and restore function, allowing him to resume his training regimen ahead of schedule.
Conclusion:
Dry needling therapy offers a promising solution for individuals seeking relief from musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction in Abbotsford. With its ability to target trigger points and promote healing, it has become a valuable tool in the realm of pain management and rehabilitation. By understanding its benefits and working with qualified practitioners, individuals can unlock the potential for improved mobility, function, and overall well-being.
Through ongoing research and innovation, dry needling therapy continues to evolve, providing hope for those in Abbotsford and beyond who seek a non-invasive, effective approach to pain relief.
