'Something's wrong, right from the start. The images seem eerie. The empty skyscraper in the middle of London, in the dark of night. Adam (Andrew Scott) is standing outside because someone pulled the fire alarm. When he looks up, he spots Harry (Paul Mescal), the only other tenant in the house. They exchange looks. Two strange souls, each for themselves. That changes when Harry knocks on Adam's front door a short time later because he is looking for an affair. But Adam rejects him, even though he is basically just as lonely. He has to work, write a script, and is not making any progress with the work. This first encounter also seems somehow strange. There is something mysterious in the air. They spend the night separately. But Adam begins to open up to Harry. A relationship slowly develops between them.

At the same time, Adam looks for creative inspiration in his own past. On a trip to the suburbs where he grew up, he unexpectedly meets his parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy), who died in a car accident 30 years ago. They haven't aged and are happy about the visit. This must be a dream, you think, but it's more of a mysterious fantasy that British director Andrew Haigh focuses on in his new drama.

The idea for his story, which is based on a novel by Taichi Yamada, is as simple as it is spooky: What would it be like if, as an adult, you could talk about your life with your parents on an equal level? Adam now addresses his childhood fears, his father's lack of acceptance, being gay and his relationship with Harry. The parents don't understand everything, especially the mother has problems with her son coming out. But they listen to him, give him space and time to free himself from the burden that has been on his narrow shoulders for far too long.

All of Us Strangers tells of ghosts and people, loss and loneliness, life and death. What is actually real and what is fiction doesn't matter because Haigh is far more interested in the perceived truth that simmers beneath the surface. It is this deeply emotional level on which the four actors operate. Each of them has internalized their characters so much that for a moment you lose all connection to reality. Andrew Scott has the hardest task because Adam is in charge of directing the action - at least to a certain extent. There is a great vulnerability in his playing that is shocking because it is unconditional and honest.'
