HELL YEAH!!!!!!!
I've officially beaten a game from my childhood- and on a respectable difficulty all the way through :)
So, the fuckin' golden gun mission, I remember seeing my cousin mess around in this one as a kid but I had no idea it'd be such a pain lol
Samedi gets tougher each revive, and on the final one I straight up just couldn't unload enough ammo into him to win since ammo is a pain to get on this difficulty as is- but I'd unload like 150 rounds into him and then get swarmed by dudes.
Unless I'm getting the billion retries mixed up, I killed him ONCE on his final phase and then I just couldn't figure out how to get the golden gun.
Though that might have been on my research run? (shown below with cheats going)

Because that's right- after mashing my head in for so long I realized I didn't know how to get the golden gun in the first place- I FOUND it- but I kept triggering the trap.
So this mod comes with a save that's done everything already, so I threw on cheats on that profile and messed with the golden gun room for a while until I found out how to get it.
After figuring it out for myself I swapped back over to my profile and did it!
With the golden gun in hand this map is miles less stressful lol
I'm glad I was able to do it without looking it up- though I did cheat to speed up my "Run to the room, trigger alarm, rinse repeat" nonsense "slightly".
Goldeneye is... well it's goldeneye.
Do you expect some grandiose new take on an N64 classic FPS?
Because I have opinions just not grandiose lol.
Goldeneye surprised me in how different it feels from most FPS I've played.
It's the objectives.
Some maps feel like a modern FPS "A to B with landmarks / setpieces along the way" but with objectives that often meant going on detours or tackling rooms differently than usual.
Some other maps felt like older FPS "dropped into a sandbox with no real direction" but with objectives- which made it play out kind of like a modern hitman game where you can do things however and in whatever order and then you get to the exit.
This was surprising, because I THOUGHT I knew how goldeneye felt to play, but then it confronted me with gameplay I didn't think it had. Or rather, I didn't comprehend it had, I guess? Because I've watched speedruns, but it kind of melted into the background when they already knew what to do. In my mind this was a bog standard shooty game, but the objectives really define the entire experience, it's neat.
Basically, I was surprised at how well goldeneye holds it's own gameplay identity. I mean, I played this a lot as a kid but pretty much just multiplayer or with cheats my cousin unlocked for me, but I thought I knew what the game was like because of that. I did not.
It's actually pretty different than most FPS I've played- AND it holds up as a really fun time/challenge today which I definitely didn't expect lol
Now goldeneye without any adjustments I would argue still holds up, but I probably wouldn't have had the patience to do what I've done here if I was playing on that version.
This was a mouse injector version with some minor QOL 60FPS adjustments, this is not how the game originally felt to play as far as controls are concerned- but man.
The thing is, if you just slapped mouse controls onto a mediocre old shooter it'd be "okay".
Putting mouse controls into goldeneye makes me Feel like I'm playing it the way it Felt as a kid, before I knew what good controls were etc.
It Feels Right, despite not being how the game was originally envisioned.
Because of that, and just because I had a fucking blast, I can't recommend mouse control goldeneye enough!
This was so much fun and just a solid damn time :) Some of the design decisions made in order to make an FPS on the N64 feel fair- like the 9 billion different ways enemies react to being shot / stagger, feel fantastic and make you wish more modern shooters would increase the time to kill and allow such interactions to happen.
Anyways, this concludes my unscheduled Goldeneye but with mouse controls intermission lol.

CoD 2 Down and Big Red One Started Notes:
The American campaign of CoD 2 ended up being so so. I think the best part of the last few levels was defending Hill 400, it almost felt like playing zombies with how insane it was. But otherwise it felt like filler honestly. I just did this yesterday and I am really struggling to remember much of anything from this. I remember doing a lot of sniping in grassy areas? And retaking a town house by house. I do think it’s funny that this game has open combat missions not so different from MW3 (2023)‘s.
Most of what I remember is from starting CoD 2: Big Red One. Now I finally know what the big red one actually is! It’s the red colored logo of a number one used by the fighting first division, not a large red tank or man or dog. Anyways, this game is a heck of a lot better than Finest Hour if only for being physically possible for me to get past the tutorial of.
The characters are extremely chatty, which is fine since the voice acting is pretty good for the time, but the writing is very cliche. Still, it makes this game feel more like a real war movie and less like a contextless slog. I really enjoyed getting to use the “MAS” series of SMG, rifle, and AR/LMG in North Africa, which I’ve never seen in a game before! Also neat that this is technically the first Treyarch CoD even before CoD 3.
It sucks to be back down to potato graphics, clunkier controls, and no regenerating health and still no sprinting…BUT the controls/graphics are much more modern than Finest Hour and this is the first of these games where I feel like I actually have enough ammo most of the time. I think my biggest complaint so far is the lack of mid-level saves, but levels aren’t too long so it isn’t a problem for now. If something crashes or goes wrong though…it could kill the playthrough. I’m only playing this to the end if no major obstacles present themselves. I’m currently six out of 14 levels down.
The tank mission wasn’t bad. I really appreciated that my health came all the way back when I respawned at a checkpoint or else it might’ve been impossible. Generally I haven’t got lost or super stuck anywhere yet. I’m on easy mode but I still die pretty fast if I play like a moron. It’s a little hard to aim but not impossible and having a scope helps a lot. I think there’s some primitive aim assist occurring for sure but it’s a lot clunkier than the modern games still. I am a little disappointed by how weak the M1 Garand reload sound is in this game. I also occasionally get frustrated having to wait for the AI to catch up and open a door for me, especially when I die and retry a section, and especially because of the relatively unforgiving checkpoints in this game. The real CoD 2 has a dynamic checkpoint system but this game seems to only have a handful of checkpoints per level at static points.
Also every level ends with this hilarious blurry silhouette of a solider against the sunset next to a palm tree. I think it’s meant to invoke North Africa, but it just makes me think of Vietnam every time which is super jarring.
Oh, I did try to play 1 online match of CoD 2 on PC on a server with bots, but I kept getting sniped by real humans. It was funny to see XP and sprinting modded into the game though. Also funny that even the vanilla multiplayer has a trench gun shotgun that does not appear in the single player.

Mod Rant
Finally get to do Doma castle with my PLD friend, I’m on SCH. Load in and watch the whole cutscene because cool stuff; and state this is our first time, not alts. BLM and MNK for DPS, BLM screws off for first 3 pulls before saying, “sorry gotta go, you’ll fill fast!” Poofs without using the “leave” function; so now we have to vote kick for offline. Whatever, stuff sucks, but really should have considered their time before queuing, maybe it was emergency, hopefully not for their sake. Now the MNK has been pulling mobs and acting like a general ass. Pulls the first boss too and my friend, being frustrated, lets them die while I’m low on mp; too low to save them and stacks are on cooldown and empty. I can’t heal that much DPS and they go down fast. I swiftcast resurrect because my MP refresh came off cooldown, all good- wait- they’re at full health but their name is grey- are you shitting me? They had reset to show their hate back by making the boss take 3 years to kill, and then stood at the door and even left their keyboard while we killed the boss. Thankfully I know how to manage my mp despite having none to begin with and the BRD we got as filler was good at dodging AOE’s even if they didn’t do any mp refresh song. Mid fight I get a moment to ask “Are you really gonna be that MNK?”, no response when the fight ends. My friend makes a comment of being annoyed with their assholery and they start with what might as well have been the “you don’t pay my sub” argument. “What are you gonna do about it, you just kicked someone so you can’t kick me.” They proceed to rush to the box before I can explain to my friend how to vote kick since I have a timer on me for initiating it on the first dps; so with loot dropped we can’t kick them, not wanting to get kicked ourselves for AFK’ing or harassing back we just play along until the next boss as best we can, the whole way they’re jumping around instead of fighting and doing the bare minimal to look like they’re participating, getting hit by AOE’s on purpose. We wipe on the boss because I get swamped in a box of lines and have to retry. Loot timers run out, PLD friend almost kicked the BRD who did nothing wrong, corrects the boot request and we kick the MNK successfully. Then the BRD decides to just leave even though they were doing great and we said “do not boot”? Thankfully they leave leave like the first guy should have, by not disconnecting. So we get a BLM and a NIN, explain to both we’re new to the dungeon and having a rough time with our DPS; they in turn explain the fights and help us through, no problems. Really though? Did the MNK have to be that much of an ass? No. Did they decide to be, yes. “Well your friend should have just taken the agro off them and tanked the boss.” Sure, but the Tank is supposed to get their face wrecked by the boss, not the DPS; they had already been ignorant about every pull up till then which was why I was so strained for MP to begin with, due to how fast we were going. ”MNK though, maybe they were about to lose their stacks?” Yeah, well maybe the MP I need to keep them alive through the boss fight they purposely got hit by AOE’s in excess for is a bit more important? If you’re going to make everyone's life hard go sit on a sharp stick, and try to feel the pain in your ass and stand up; before you impale yourself on your ego and selfishness. Especially if you’re a DPS class, you’re a dime a dozen right now, so get out or I’m just going to kick you out. I’ve had enough bad experiences with assholes in duty finder I don’t need more names to my list.
