As Autumn turned to Winter, Bea was so happy in her current predicament.
Tumblr media
There was no fighting...there were no slaps across the face...there were no blatant insults about anybody's personality or characteristics...Bea had found peace
Tumblr media
...and love
Tumblr media
that night she kissed Florence's hands for the first time. Feeling her lips press against the skin of this remarkable woman filled her with jitters. Her stomach was full of fluttering...as if there were butterflies freshly emerged from their cocoons inside of her. And here she was, emerging from her cocoon herself.
She knew she could find herself here.

Bea: We're going on a journey, all the way to Maine.
John Edward: Maine? That's far! Why are we going there?
Bea: It's a special place for me, where I grew up. And, we'll be staying at a magnificent mansion.
Judy: A mansion? Whose mansion?
Bea: It belongs to someone very dear to me—Effie Bolin. You know, my best friend from the old days.
Florence: Effie Bolin? The one you always talk about?
Bea: Exactly. She's graciously invited us to stay at her mansion. It's not just a house; it's filled with stories and warmth.
John Edward: Cool! But why are we going there?
Tumblr media
Bea: Well, it's time for us to reconnect with our roots, spend time with your grandparents, and create new memories with Effie. It's a journey of the heart, my loves.
Judy: So, we get to explore a mansion and spend time with family and friends?
Bea: Precisely, sweetheart. It's an adventure waiting to unfold, and I want you to embrace it with open hearts. We'll discover the enchantment of Brindleton Bay and the joy of Effie's welcoming mansion.
Florence: That sounds amazing, Mom!
Bea: I thought you'd like the idea, my dear. So, get ready for a journey filled with love, laughter, and new beginnings.
John Edward: Yay! I can't wait!

Florence: You would move to Italy?
Beatrice: Well if mother and father arrange a marriage with a man there, that is where I will have to go.
Florence: But...but...what about us?
Tumblr media
Beatrice: You would come with me silly.
Judith: That's a fantasy! Florence, you'll marry whoever your mother arranges you to marry.
Florence: That sounds terrible. Yes, grandfather left us a nice townhouse. But we don't have money and well, with me not having a father and that being well known in Maine society...*shudders*...I cannot imagine who I would be stuck with. Besides men are gross.
Tumblr media
Judith: Don't you just find them handsome though?
Beatrice & Florence: Eww
Judith: You really don't think so?
Beatrice: You haven't grown up with brothers. Trust me, men are gross. Besides, have you seen how my father talks to us? Men are terrible.
Judith: Then why are you so content to marry one?
Beatrice: We're women. That's our place in society. Plus having children will be just lovely.

Bea's birthday went unnoticed in the Dooley household. Clara and Jesse too focused on college coursework, while Lizzie is away at a home for girls in Massachusetts where she will stay for the duration of her pregnancy, the baby being passed on to a loving couple for adoption. Fortunately for her name, Lizzie had just finished her secondary correspondence schooling. Lizzie was a good student, just like Clara and Jesse, and she was all ready for college when she fell "ill". She will not be starting her college courses until her return and the family has let everyone know she is staying with her aunt in Italy before she starts university.
It has been quiet in the house ever since the news broke. Well, almost quiet.
Bea's parents have always had a rocky relationship. She see's her friends parents sharing glances, brushing hands. Mama and Father never did that. They were distant. Yet, now, they were screaming.
It was Bea's birthday and no one said a word about it.
Now Mama and Father were screaming at each other.
Bea was crying in bed when Clara knocked softly on her door.
"Race you to the lighthouse, last one there bakes cookies" Clara uttered softly, before darting down the hallway with a giggle.
Bea didn't beat Clara to the lighthouse, but by the time she had climbed all the stairs she was smiling. Clara hugged her at the top and whispered in her ear, "look at the moon".

On September 13, 1911, Beatrice Viola Dooley packed her bags from her parents home in Brindleton Bay, Maine, and took the hour train ride with her best friend and older brother and moved Bea into the Lister household in Britechester, Maine.
Tumblr media
While Bea wanted to be closer to school, and not spend two hours every day on the train, she also was growing closer to Florence. To tell the truth, she had fallen in love with Florence.
Bea never saw this kind of love between a man and a woman. Her parents were hardened by years of struggles from before her father's farm had miraculously grown a money tree, and then her father had harvested the money fruit and planted an orchard of them, making the family millions and effectively declaring them as "new money".
Tumblr media
The Lister family was happy to take in Bea. They had watched her grow, seen her excel at her studies, seen her graduate high school at the age of fifteen. They were not what you would call an "old money" family. Sure, they had wealth, but they were upper middle class. So, while they lived in a nice home, they did not have any servants, not like how Bea grew up with maids and a butler.
