So, I recently reread CAS and watched the movie in the appropriate place, and something stood out to me.
There's just no way that time portal was a spur of the moment plan.
Leo already knew Mikey could make one, and there wasn't any debate at all about who to send where and when.
(Also, it's interesting to me that they sent Casey back to the day of, instead of say, a week earlier, but that's a different conversation.)
So, what I'm thinking is, after losing Donnie, then their base, then Raph, and with their constantly dwindling numbers and supplies, Leo and Mikey had to see the end coming.
There had to have been a discussion at some point- winning is flat out impossible, and 'not losing' is also looking pretty unlikely, so how do we prevent complete and total defeat? -and somehow they landed on 'let's send someone to the past and fuck the Krang before they even know the game is in play.'
And, out of everyone they could have sent, options which included Leo, who knew everything he would have needed to know to snag the Key before Warren Stone and Hypnopotamus, and fucking Todd, who the Past!Turtles already knew and trusted, and who also knew the lay of the land, they chose Casey, who knew nothing about anything and only managed to find April on a fluke-
-because it was never about stopping the Krang.
It was about keeping their son safe.
And I hope Casey gets to see that.
Ohhhhohohoho I think you are the first one I saw who pointed this out~
Yeas yes yeS YES this is gonna be interesting conversation hehe

Hey you got anything in your au you want to talk about but no one has asked about?? (Or a au you have not written) (or a head cannon you want to mention)
Haha I always do! Hm, let’s talk briefly about this specific moment with Leo from the recent Interview:
Tumblr media
Only a few people have privately messaged me about this line and I feel that it is very important to address for Leo’s character arc.
LEO TED TALK TIME:
Even though Agent Bishop might have been the one to plant the seed, it grew into a weight that Leo would continue to carry long after the man’s passing. It would become the unfinished mission that would haunt him for the rest of his adult life:
“Find the Key, stop the Krang.”
Maybe once years ago there had been a plan on how to achieve this, but by the time this mission is passed on to Casey it has become little more than a desperate mantra reignited by the flames of hope. Frankly it sounds absurd in its simplicity as Leo easily sketches out the image that has endlessly haunted him and instructs Junior to achieve the impossible.
Tumblr media
When Casey objects Leo grabs him, frantic, almost breaking. He’s the most distraught we’ve ever seen him in this moment, ordering Casey to simply say it back to him, as if terrified that it might be forgotten.
Tumblr media
It is not until Casey repeats the well tread mantra that Leo finally calms. The torch has been passed and some of that weight has finally been lifted off his shoulders. He seems almost serene after that as he reassures Casey. A stark contrast to the terror that had filled him moments ago.
He trusts Casey Junior completely and he knows that the boy does not need his help to succeed where he has failed all his life.
I feel like Leo has come such a long way by this point in his story, but if there's still one thorn left in his side it's this one, and it really shows. At least, that's my interpretation. It's really interesting seeing these little moments from the movie and figuring out what details and hidden nuance can be gleaned from these brief, but powerful interactions.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Something I’ve noticed is that in the Rise Movie Casey Junior is still in the middle of processing Future Leonardo & Michelangelo’s deaths
The key detail that shows that Casey Junior hasn’t yet fully processed the deaths of Future Leo & Mikey is that there’s difference in how Casey Junior talks about the future versions of Leo & Mikey when compared to how he talks about the future version of Donnie.
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: You are the greatest ninja the world has ever seen
Tumblr media
Mikey: What do I do in the future?
Casey Junior: You are the most powerful mystic warrior the world has ever known
When Casey Junior talks about the future versions of Leo & Mikey he uses the present tense ‘you ARE the greatest ninja’ or ‘you ARE the most powerful mystic warrior’ however when Casey Junior talks about Donnie’s future self he uses the past tense he says ‘you WERE’
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: Donnie, you were the most brilliant, innovative mind of all time
The difference in present & past tense that Casey Junior has when referring to the future versions of Leo & Mikey compared to the future version of Donnie is also most likely a deliberate one since a deleted scene from the movie even draws attention to it
Tumblr media
Donnie: I’m sorry, ‘were’? As in... past tense? Does something happen to me in the future? Do I... do I die?
The scene was most likely taken out so that the scene where Casey Junior tells Leo about the fate of everyone in the future would have more impact but the fact that there’s a difference in tense in how Casey Junior talks about the Future Leo & Mikey compared to how he talks about the future version of Donnie shows that Casey Junior is still processing their deaths.
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: I never thought I’d see you again! I’m so happy I could hug you!
Though we don’t know when exactly the future version of Donnie dies we do know that it was before the events of the movie’s opening due to the fact that Future Leo has already tied the future versions of Donnie & Raph’s masks onto his sword.
Though we don’t know how much time there is between Future Donnie’s death & the movies opening it’s clear that it was enough time for Casey Junior to process his death & accept him as gone however that isn’t the case for the future versions of Leo & Mikey
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Casey Junior: How am I gonna save them all, Sensei? I really wish you were here. Wait, you are! I just need to find you
The future version of Leo & Mikey die in the movies opening, for Casey Junior they’ve only /just/ died & the second he starts attempting to process their deaths & accept that they’re gone, he backtracks immediately when he realises that the past/ present versions of Leo & Mikey are still alive.
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: You told me to find the key and stop the Krang
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: That’s exactly how you freed all those families from the Krang labour camp
The fact that Casey Junior talks to Leo as if he’s still the same Master Leonardo that trained him is also an indicator of Casey Junior not yet processing Future Leo’s death. While Casey Junior probably had time to deal with living in a world without the future version of Donnie, Casey Junior met Leo & Mikey’s past/ present selves shortly after loosing their future selves in the movies opening.
Casey Junior treats Leo the same way he would his sensei because he wants to act as though nothing has changed, he’s not processing Future Leo & Mikey’s deaths because they aren’t ‘gone’ their past/ present selves are right there.
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: Actually, there is something I should tell you
It’s only when Casey Junior sees Mikey try to use his mystic hands, the very thing that killed the Future Michelangelo does it begin to hit Casey Junior that the future versions of Leo & Mikey died.
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: Everybody dies fighting the Krang. The world needs Master Leonardo. And all we got is this guy
When Casey Junior confronts Leo on his refusal to act like a leader, it finally fully hits Casey Junior that his family is gone, that everyone he knew is gone, that the past/ present version of Leo isn’t the same person as his Sensei because Leo hasn’t had the experiences that made the ‘Master Leonardo’ that Casey Junior knew.
The anger that Casey Junior displays when he confronts Leo might not only be because Casey Junior is frustrated with Leo’s action but also because Casey Junior is finally moving from denial stage of grief over his Sensei’s death to the anger stage of grief.

One last chance (rottmnt Leo x reader)
summary: after sending Casey through the portal back in time, Leo ends up accidentally falling through it as well. he comes face to face with y/n, who had died in his time.

word count: 3.5k
A/N: inspired by this post by @jasontoddisbest. as i went back to get the link i realised i actually read the post wrong lmao i might do one for that if i feel inspired and people like this one,, for now enjoy this one. (it‘s my first time writing a fic and english is not my first language. please be kind ;;v;; constructive criticism and grammar corrections are very appreciated!)
Navigation: Part 1 (you‘re here) | Part 2 | Part 3 (wip)
— — —
„And do me a favour” Leo said to Casey, grabbing him tightly by the shoulder. “After you’re done saving the world, grab a slice!“ he shouted as he flung the unsuspecting boy through the portal Mikey had made moments before. As Casey's body passed the gateway, he disappeared in yellow zaps and flames.
Seeing the last of his brothers be consumed into nothingness in front of Leo's eyes started weighing in on him after Casey was no longer in view. He tried to convince himself that Mikey‘s sacrifice wouldn‘t be in vain. Jumping to the side to evade a Krang laser, he chanted ‘find the key, stop the Krang‘ in his mind over and over, hoping it would get through time and space to his protegee and give him the necessary strength.
Several Krang minions attacked at the same time, jumping onto Leo. With the handle of his sword he started smacking them away. A heavy knot set at the base of his stomach as Leo realised there was nothing more he could do for Casey or the world now, for he was the last one. His brothers, smack! his father, thwack! his friends, kick! his love. All gone.
With a side jump and a roll Leo evaded yet another laser; this time it had been too close though as the light had burnt a slight gash into his arm. He hissed through his teeth and was about to direct some profanities towards the last Krang monster still fighting him, when all of a sudden it turned on his heels, scurrying away. The ninja was about to use that as his chance to flee, when his eyes followed the path the little pest was heading towards. His blood ran cold at the sight of the portal still open and zapping. The alien was about to go back in time as well!
“Oh no, you don’t!” Leo yelled as he charged at the gooey creature with his sword, slicing it in half, causing it to give a high-pitched screech. With the last remnants of its life force, the alien decided to avenge its own death by biting Leo in the ankle. He managed to lift his leg just in time, evading the sharp teeth, but the unforeseen action made him lose his balance, and he stumbled backwards, accidentally falling through the portal.
His shell was met with hard concrete, and the New York night lights blinded him for a second, even though it was a welcome change from the constant red, fire and misery he had seen and lived in the last decade.
“Oh no, no no no-“ he cursed at himself for being so careless, quickly standing to his feet and picking up his sword. The sounds of cars, the city bustling and music somewhere far off filled his ears. It was so very tempting to turn around and take in a breath of the city, to let his eyes go over the masses of people and the skyscrapers still standing. Luckily the portal had opened in a dark alleyway away from curious eyes, not that the average New Yorker would stand and stare anyways. They had always seemed untroubled by most very not normal circumstances. This thought put a little smile on his face, which quickly turned into a frown. He wasn’t meant to be here. He didn’t know how long the portal would stay open either, so he had to get to the other side and stop anything else from coming through. With newfound resolution he was just about to leap through the gateway, when he heard a familiar voice behind him.
— — —
Since you hadn’t heard from the turtle brothers all day, you decided to go pay them a visit. None of them had seen your messages, not even your boyfriend Leo. But Donnie not seeing them was even stranger, since he basically carried all his tech around with him at all times, even more so his phone. April had gone radio silent too. The last thing you knew is that she was on some sort of self-proclaimed mission to unveil the mystery of the chemistry department at the university. Since your texts weren’t even going through to her, you supposed she had run out of battery, like many other times.
You looked up at the sound of echoing footsteps and the panting of someone with what seemed to be a mask and a hockey stick, running into the streets and getting lost in the vast ocean of people. He had hurriedly come out of an alleyway a couple metres ahead of you. Stuffing your phone back in your pocket you decided it would be best to cross the street and not get involved in whatever is going on in that alleyway. Meanwhile you made a mental note to get April a powerbank sometime soon, as you didnt’ like it when everyone ignored you all at once. Especially today when you’ve been having this weird queasy feeling all day that you couldn't shake off.
The night breeze suddenly blew some leaves and papers over you, making you grip your hoodie tighter around your neck. You turned away from the street slightly, smoothing out the fabric over your shoulders. You were just about to continue making your way to the turtle’s lair again when you heard a zapping sound next to you. In the alleyway shone a bright yellow light, suspended in the air, and on the ground underneath lied some sort of creature. It rose to its legs and picked up a- wait, is that Leo’s sword? Taking a better look, the creature did look turtle-esque. Just much taller than the ones you knew. This piqued your interest and you silently approached from behind. Being closer and with the yellow light illuminating his frame, you concluded that that was indeed Leo’s sword, albeit much more tattered, and you also noticed the familiar yellow stripes on his uncovered arm. Just as familiar as the blue mask wrapped around his head.
For a moment you considered you had actually fainted or inhaled some gas leak somewhere since you were clearly hallucinating. But there was just something pulling you to him, he seemed so real, so familiar, there was something about him that just made him unmistakably-
“Leo?” you questioned more towards yourself than the figure in front of you. You saw the creature slightly jump at your voice, his shoulders tensing up. He slowly turned around, and as his body fully faced yours, you concluded that this giant turtle in front of you was indeed Leo but much… Taller? Rougher? Older? He’s still looking fine though. You mentally smacked yourself for that last one. This was no moment for thoughts like that. This was clearly a Leo from a different dimension or something. You were however unsure what to do or say. What if in his world, you two are enemies? What if he has no recollection of who you are? What if… you had never existed in his life at all?
That train of thought came and left within a fraction of a second, disappearing just as quickly as it formed, after having his eyes meet yours and seeing how the rugged features softened into that smitten yet somehow cocky look Leo had when looking at you, which you had grown to love.
He let go of his sword, letting it fall to the ground with a clang that echoed through the narrow alley you stood in. Taking a couple steps he came to stand in front of you, towering over you even more than usual, but you didn’t cower away or step back, in fact you met him halfway. Without a word, he simply fell to his knees and hugged you so tight yet so full of care not to hurt you, and with such emotion, that you felt tears pricking behind your eyes. You hugged him back to the best of your abilities. Even on his knees his face was almost level with yours.
“What happened?” you started questioning him in a soft voice. “Where did you come from? You know me, don’t you?” He didn’t exactly look in a mental or emotional state to answer your questions but your curiosity was starting to win over.
Just as you were formulating your next question, he let go and leaned back a bit to look you in the face, bringing up his massive hands to cup your cheeks. He softly stroked your cheek with his thumb, stroking up your temple and settling his hand at the nape of your neck, pushing you forward slightly to rest his forehead against yours. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath.
“I can’t tell you much, and I don’t know how much time I have.” His other hand snaked down and around your waist to press you against his chest, stressing the urgency he spoke with. His voice was soft, he spoke quickly but not in a hurried way to stumble over his own words. More in a there's so much I want to say and I don't know where to begin kinda way.
“Where I’m from, I lost you." is what he decided to go with. The turtle in front of you trembled ever so slightly, and you could tell there were a million things going through his brain right now. You silently waited for him to continue, but he didn't. He looked at you in a way that you could only describe as resignedly heartbroken. It tore you apart from within and you barely held back a sob. You wanted to comfort him somehow, tell him that you’re right there with him, but you didn’t know how. Your hands came up to hold his face, but he was already standing up, leaving your palms on his plastron, which was rougher than expected.
The light behind Leo zapped and flickered lightly; he took it as his cue to go. He turned back to you, slightly bending down to kiss your forehead. Without removing his lips from his kiss, he whispered into your skin. “I love you y/n. Always have. Always will. Take care of the guys for me, will ya?”
And with that he harshly turned, leaving you standing confused and inexplicably sad. Leo picked up his sword in a swift motion and turned to you one last time.
“Oh and say thank you to Mikey, for the goodbye gift!” the turtle exclaimed, winked at you, and disappeared into the light. It flickered and zapped a couple of times, then disappeared with a ‘whoosh!’, leaving you alone in the dark alleyway.
— — —
Your brain could not comprehend what just happened. Your legs seemed to move on their own, as they hurriedly carried you to the sewers. You were in full automatic mode, while in your head you kept replaying the scene again and again. Was he really from a different dimension? Does the multiverse exist? If you died in his world… could your Leo be fated to die in yours?
Your thoughts kept spiralling into a very negative, very dangerous zone. The more you tried to understand the occurrence before, the more your vision started tunneling towards one goal only: find Leo and make sure he’s safe.
“I can explain!” sounded a voice you didn’t know through the halls of the turtle’s lair. That made you snap out of your very dark thoughts back into reality, which is when you noticed you had already arrived at your destination. Only now did you realise how out of breath you were; you must have come running full speed. Clutching your hoodie over your crazy beating heart, you made your way into the living room where everyone seemed to be gathered around a guy tied to a chair, which was hanging from the ceiling.
Raph was the first to notice you and was about to greet you but you pushed past him without a word, bee-lining towards Leo. You basically tackled him into a hug, making him go “oomph!” from the impact, and he hugged you back.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked. But you refused to look up and buried your face between his shoulder and his neck, sniffling. Oh great, you thought, now I’m gonna cause a scene here in front of everyone and that guy- who is that anyways?
“I was just- and you were-“ you said between muffled sobs. “and I was so scared something had happened!”
Finally you looked up and your ache was transformed into rage as you turned around abruptly, looking at the other turtles.
“Why did none of you respond to my texts?!” you said angrily at no one in particular, tears running down your cheeks. “I was so worried, and then I had the weirdest meeting ever with-“.
“y/n?” A voice interrupted your rambling. You looked up to glare at the boy tied to the chair. You felt like you had seen him before somewhere. Then you noticed the mask and the hockey stick, and that’s when you realised it was the guy from the alleyway.
“What is he doing here?” You asked somewhat derogatorily, pointing at the hanging prisoner, as Donnie cut the rope and pulled the chair back up with one of his robotic arms.
“And more importantly: why do you know their name?” Leo questioned the boy, throwing one arm over your shoulders to squeeze you reassuringly.
“Because you told me stories about them!” Casey said, directed at Leo, and took a deep breath. He proceeded to explain how he came from the future, which made everyone break out in laughter, except for you. As his explanation of an apocalyptic future invaded by aliens went on, your earlier meeting made more and more sense.
You were about to ask more about your relationship with future Leo when Splinter started retelling the legend of the Krang. Casey said they had to retrieve a key, but as it turns out, they had been on a mission today where they already failed to take that key and the Foot ended up snatching it. At least that would explain why no one had answered your texts all day.
The turtle brothers started making a plan on how to get back the key from the Krang, exiting the room. Except that they left Casey tied to the chair. He asked if anyone would untie him into the room, and you approached him.
“Master y/n” Casey spoke with a smile. “It really is you! All of you! I still can’t believe it worked. Master Michelangelo…” he trailed off at that last part, his smile replaced with a sad grimace. He shook his head as if to shake the thoughts out of his head, and redirected his attention to you. All the while, you had been untying the ropes on his chair. Loosening the last knot, you got back to your feet and planted yourself in front of Casey, whose name you still didn’t know, and crossed your arms over your chest.
“So who are you again?” you asked in a demanding tone. “How exactly did you get here? And why did you come alone?”
At the last question, he looked pained again and his gaze shifted to the side. As he stood up you noticed he was taller than you so he looked down at you and set his hands on your shoulders.
“I’m Casey, but there’s no time.” he urged. “We have to go get the key. I’ll answer your questions on the way.” Casey moved to follow the group but you grabbed him by his cape and yanked him back. Your fist clenched the fabric so hard your knuckles were going white.
“No.” you said without meeting his gaze. Instead you were looking down at your hands. “You’re going to tell me why I met an older Leo in the same alley you came from, and why he looked so heartbroken and why he said he lost me. I’m right here! What did he mean? Am I gonna-“
“Y/n, stop. Please.” Casey spoke softly and took your hands in his, to signal you should let go of his cape. You didn’t. He sighed, looked back to check that no one else was within listening range, and turned back to you. He lowered his head a bit and spoke almost with a whisper.
“All I know is I’m here and we have a second chance. That’s all that matters. What happens to me, to you, to any of us, none of it matters if the Krang come here and devastate everything. What difference will it be to you if I tell you what happened? Will you treat Master Leonardo differently? I don’t think he’d want that.”
He did have a point. What would you win knowing what happens in the future, to you or any of the turtles for that matter? You would live every moment in fear and anxiety, and you already had enough of the latter to last several timelines.
You tilted your head thinking it over, and decided that he was right. “Fine.” you finally said looking up at him. You wanted to add something else to that, you weren’t even sure what exactly, but Leo appeared from around the corner and saw you basically holding hands with Casey.
“What’s taking you so long, Padawan o’ mine?” he asked Casey and nonchalantly pushed his hands away from yours, taking them in his instead. “Let’s go! We know where the Foot is. Let’s go get that key. Again” Leo mumbled that last part.
As Casey made his way to the group, the turtle faced you fully.
“So what was that earlier? Is everything okay?” he asked cupping your cheek with one of his hands. “You looked pretty shaken.”
You noticed how his hand wasn’t quite as big as the one from older Leo, and thinking that maybe you wouldn’t be there to see him grow, both physically and as a person, made you tremble and there were the tears again. You placed your hands on his plastron and bit your bottom lip, not being able to meet his eyes. Should you tell him? Casey said maybe it’s better if he didn’t know at all. He would definitely go into over-protective mode and never let you leave his side if you told him there was a chance you might get hurt, or worse. You didn’t even know what happened or when or where.
“Hey” Leo placed his hand under your chin and slightly pushed your face to meet his gaze. He was starting to get worried. With a slight nod he urged you to talk. You opened your mouth to say something, but nothing came out. You decided that it would be best he never hears of this encounter. You’d just spend every waking minute making sure he knows how much he means to you.
Without a word you grabbed onto his face and kissed him hard, trying to convey all of your feelings. He reciprocated, placing his arms around your waist. You broke the kiss to pepper his face with little kisses instead. On his cheeks, his nose, his neck, anywhere you could reach. This made him chuckle and he lightly swayed you from side to side.
“You know I love you right?” you asked him.
“I do, and I love you too. Very much-“
“No, no. I mean it. I love you.” Again tears were forming at the corner of your eyes. Your voice became but a whisper against his neck. “Please promise me you’ll stay by my side forever.”
“Y/n where is this coming from?” You only hugged him harder to get an answer. He hugged back just as tightly. “Of course I will. I promise. I love you so much y/n. You’re never getting rid of me.”
The last comment made you smile through your tears. You pulled back to kiss him one last time and ran your hand through your hair, sniffling. With the back of your sleeve you dried your face and Leo’s as well, as you realised you had stained his cheeks in your tears. As you brushed over his cheek, he looked at you with the same love-struck face you had seen on older Leo not long before, just not as… sad. Things will be different, you told yourself. They’ll be better. I’ll be better. I’ll make sure of it.
“Alright then” you said with newfound motivation. You took Leo’s hand in yours, him already wearing his signature smirk. You pulled him to where the group was already waiting for you two. “Let’s get this bread”.
— — —
Bonus:
A couple of days after defeating the Krang, Mikey found a home-made cake on the counter when entering the kitchen. Tucked underneath the plate was a note, which read “Thank you. -Leo”, but he clearly recognised your handwriting. The orange-clad turtle chuckled at that.
“Mystic hands!” he exclaimed, wriggling his fingers in the air, trying to telepathically get a fork out of the drawer.
You observed this while standing around the corner of the kitchen, hiding behind the door frame, only to see Mikey actually manage to rattle the cutlery drawer for a moment, the sound of clanging metal filling the room. Mikey gasped loudly and looked at his hands in awe.
“Thank you”, you whispered, on behalf of a turtle who, against all odds, got to see you one last time.

Uncle Donnie WIP for my own AU, ‘Weird Science’
Tumblr media
The Weird Science AU is a time travelling uncle Donnie AU I made up where the future is a little different. Rather than the brothers die one after another once the Krang invade, they all get killed in the first battle apart from Donnie, who wakes up to find they’re all dead.
But Donnie is nothing if not stubborn and decides that he’s just going to break the time-space continuum to fix it all again.
More details under the cut :)
Years pass and he finds himself adopting a kid by accident, destroying the laws of physics to create time travel that takes him and Casey Junior back in time to find the key and stop the Krang. Only, the time travel is…less than perfect, completely untested and crazy. Not only do Donnie and Casey not arrive at the correct time, they keep blipping unexpectedly to different points in time at random queues.
Basically Donnie trying not to break the past, and still somehow fix the future before and protect an apocalyptic human child, not necessarily in that order.
I will also note that this version of Donnie (his design and personality) is inspired by @somerandomdudelmao ‘s Future Donnie. If you haven’t read Cass’ comics yet, do it. They’re very fun and not at all traumatising.
Will remain a WIP until exams are over, then I might finish it who knows. Feel free to ask questions though, it will help me plan it better :)

Here it is (finally) the reference sheet for my au, "It's a Complicated Equation".
Plot
While this au is pretty similar to the original timelines, there are several noticable differences that sets it apart. Unlike other aus, events took place in such a way that the apocalypse never occurred. Meaning that the turtles were never traumatized, nor ever met Casey Jones.
Another difference is that Lou Jitsu never raised the children. Being a superstar for all his life, Lou Jitsu just didn't want or have what it took to be a parent. At a young age, the Turtle tots were just dumped somewhere in a rain soaked cardboard box, while Lou Jitsu set out to find new fortune and glory in the Hidden City.
(Still a work in progress. Im not going to give everything away just yet :3)
Character Bios
Donnie: Medical special needs child. Literally lost an arm in a fight or something, and now doesn't go on missions anymore with the bros. He does make inventions to help his siblings tho, and is actually best buddies with Kendra (they met at April's school when they were a lot younger, and ended up bonding over their shared favorite color, Purple, and their higher brain power. These two will literally kill for each other, lol). Even if he doesn't show it, Donnie actually wants to be hugged and/or loved and appreciated, he just doesn't know how to ask for it. He has a bad(?) habit of imprinting on parent aged adults. When he's attached to someone, he will do anything to make them like him.
Mikey: Sweet innocent child/master of psychological manipulation. Ever since he discovered his mystic powers, he has had a very good understanding and control over them. Donnie created him a pair of gloves to protect his hands while using his powers. They also limit and measure the amount of energy he is using, so that he doesn't use too much, or hurt himself. Lastly, they carry sedatives in the case that Mikey loses control and needs to be stopped. Mikey is loved by all his siblings. But he can be a real gremlin when he wants to, knowing that he can get away with it.
Leo: Due to the way this universe happened, the events leading up to the krang invasion happened in such a way that the key was lost, and never recovered. Meaning that Leo never had to really mature and take it leadership. Unlike many other poor Leonardos, Leo is able to be his carefree, joking, self-confident little self. He takes his big brother role seriously, being lovingly protective, and annoying, to his two little bros. Seriously though, he would do anything the protect the younger turtles of the group. If Mikey is hurt or sad, he's right there. If Donnie is getting picked on, he is more than willing to beat up who ever the jerk is. He loves his family with a passion.
Raph: When they were just children, Lou Jitsu ended up abandoning them, deciding the job of parenting was too much for a recently mutated actor. Besides, there was still glory to get in this new Hidden City. This forced Raph to take up the role of caretaker and parent at a very young age. He has successfully raised his three siblings all on his own, and although they still see him as their brother, the other turtles affectionately refer to him as 'Mama Raph'.

As someone who does not enjoy time travel, what did you think of the way the Rise movie handled time travel? The "It's more an alternate dimension, but it's still travel" is an expert way to handle such mechanics without breaking them in my opinion. What about you?
I think the Rise Movie did a really good job with it’s time travel! They make it very clear as to how time travel works in the world and do a good job at exploring the effects that screwing with time has.
Rise’s time travel has a certain feeling of comfort to it because it has rules that it follows and clearly explained limitations and effects. I think often times I dislike time travel because of how vague it is and how many plot holes and well-the-writer-said-so-s it has. I think time travel, just like all plots needs two things: a Why, and a How.
The Rise movie’s plot is grounded in the concept of time travel. The “why” of the movie is clearly established in the first few minutes. The world is ending and the only way to save it is to go back in time and change the past. “Find the key, stop the Krang.” The why is literally told to you by Leo.
Even if you didn’t watch the series before the movie, (though if you did, this is even more concrete) it’s heavily implied that Rise has a magic system that is able to be as powerful as the person wielding the magic can make it, and that’s proven throughout the movie. The “how” is well explained and, in the setting of the world, makes sense. You’re never questioning “wait but I don’t get it, how did he go back in time??” because Rise demonstrates the power of it’s mystic abilities.
I think the reason time travel is screwed up so often in TV series is that, unless they plan on making a multi-part episode or an entire arc, the show only gets 20-45 minutes to explain everything whereas a movie gets 2 hours or more. However obviously in the case of 2012 that’s not the case since they’re given 15 episodes(approximately 5 hours) of space arc time travel nonsense and even more if you count the Renet episodes.
So to sum it up, the Rise Movie is a good example of the few times in media that time travel is aced. It presents a clear why and how that doesn’t leave you scratching your head. I think it was very well handled and actually adds a lot of cool stuff to the plot rather than subtracting it!
Good question! :]

Can you expand more on what would’ve happened if Leo/Mikey/Raph had been the ones to end up being taken by the brother Kraang? I love your work and I’m sorry to hear about your writers block! Hope this helps! ❤️
For sure! Thank you for the ask! I’m not surprised those concepts caught on lol so I think I’ll probably go into some more details on 1) the ideas of what would happen and 2) why I’m writing new hardware with Donnie and not one of the other bros lmao
Putting some of this beneath a cut bc this one’s gonna be LONG.
The Tear AU
In an AU where Leo is taken instead of Donnie, the Krang would have to work fast. Donnie has a tracker on Leo, and even if the tracker is taken out of him at some point, it would at least give the others a much smaller area they have to search. However, Leo’s use of portals would be able to help in this, since the ability to get Krang matter wherever and whenever the Krang wants could give them a huge advantage. It would probably be a much shorter story, since the turtles have a very limited amount of time to stop The Tear and the Brother before things just get absolutely out of hand, but they’ll be able to actually get there to deal with the issues and start fighting relatively quickly. Leo probably isn’t super conscious while any of this is going on, since even though he’s good at strategizing, the Krang probably wouldn’t see much virtue in Leo keeping his capacity for thought and just use him as a portal generator.
Tumblr media
The Guard AU
Sorry Raph ily but this would be the least fun for me to write I think lol. You definitely CAN make the “Raph gets krangified again” plot work, but it’s not something I personally wanna dedicate too much headspace too. The whole of the movie was basically this plot, and it would mostly be Raph and the Brother trying to free the other Krang, get the key, all of that stuff. There could definitely be some fun angst of maybe with him critically injuring a member of his family, but most of what can be done here has already been done. There also wouldn’t be much of Raph fighting back bc the Brother Krang (or at least my idea of him) would just kinda. Turn off his brain since it’s not really useful to him.
Tumblr media
The Battery AU
In the case of Mikey being captured, it’s probably the most interesting out of the three for me. Most likely how the plot would play out is that Michelangelo is captured, and the Krang probes his memory to find out about the bad future and decides to try and use that power. He brings Mikey back to his den and then there, uses Mikey’s powers to tear open a doorway to the bad dimension and to try and bring the successful Krang and their army in through the portal. Mikey either breaks out or is rescued at that point, and the rest of the story is focused on the brothers fighting off the Krang from the alternate dimension. Mikey being injured in some sort of way from having to use that power is definitely a possibility and some good angst too.
Tumblr media
The way New Hardware works and the trope it plays off for me is the idea of the “smart guy” (Donnie, in this case) and what would actually happen in a way if they were removed from a plot. Over and over again in rottmnt and in other media, things can only “get started” once the characters have information to go on, either by convenience or by getting it from somewhere. Characters like Donatello are catalysts in the literal definition, speeding up the process of the plot by getting characters the information they need to go start kicking butt or getting into the action and all that.
Think about the movie, and think about what would have happened if Donnie wasn’t there, if he hadn’t implanted the trackers in anyone. It’s brushed over and then played as a joke that those trackers are there, but the fact it’s brushed over is just an example of how important those characters are to a narrative. They didn’t have to look for Raph that much, they just knew where he was and could focus their attention of fighting the bad guys to get to him instead.
The point of New Hardware is 1) because Donnie is my favorite character and unfortunately for him that means I like giving him angst and 2) to show what would realistically happen in a worst case scenario when characters don’t have that convenient information to go off of anymore. Information is a type power as people say, and without Donnie on their side, they’re at a big disadvantage when it comes to intel.

How are Mikey and Donnie doing? Since we've gotten the low down on Raph
Also, have they actually started to do worse since Leo has come back? Considering how he looks, the constant injuries, ect?
[ cw: death mention / injury mention / trauma / ]
Like I said here, Raph’s reason for believing in Leo’s survival is Trust.
Donnie’s is Proof. And Mikey’s is Hope.
More on them below
For Donnie, he’s made machine after machine, each one more complex than the last, all with the aim to tear a hole in reality to bring back his brother (his twin.) It never works, not once, and he considers, really and truly, remaking the Technodrome from the parts that have fallen all over the place (that thought is banished as soon as it hits him, and he was still shivering hours later.)
He considers stealing from the EPF. He considers getting the key and making a new portal himself regardless of the consequences. He considers many things and tries to do many things and maybe he would have if not for the rest of the family being on red alert for any dangerous actions.
It’s best he never did any of it, as the odds of finding one small turtle from a single unstable opening are low.
So he continues to search for an answer, even as it becomes more and more likely that Mikey may just be it. Donnie just can’t accept the thought of waiting around for the solution to come to them. He knows Mikey needs to train, but Donnie doesn’t want to wait.
Donnie hates to leave Leo in that place any longer than necessary. And he knows Leo’s probably there, the slider doesn’t die so easily.
There’s no proof of Leo’s death. They never saw a body, they never were contacted by his spirit.
So Donnie knows Leo’s out there. And he doesn’t want to keep him waiting.
On one occasion, Donnie swallows his pride and bows his head to the witches of Witch Town, begging for an answer, even if that answer isn’t within the realm of science.
They give him nothing.
Then. One day April makes a comment. She tells him that he’s “getting so tall.” So, of course, he immediately goes to check.
And, he is. He is tall. Tall-er at least, and getting taller still.
Taller than Leo was.
April finds him again an hour later, curled up in a heap on the floor and sobbing, sobbing, sobbing as he outpaces his memory of Leo.
It’s not like he didn’t know he’d probably one day get taller - after all, he’s a softshell versus Leo’s slider. Even considering all other aspects that may make them close, at most they’d be the same height, but most likely the end result is Donnie reigning supreme in the vertical department.
So. He knew he’d get taller. He’d been hoping to rub it in Leo’s face, considering they’d been on a back and forth with their heights for so long now.
But Leo wasn’t there.
Leo wasn’t there.
And. Then he was. And he was dead - and Donnie shut down.
But then Leo was - back? Somehow? And, for once, Donnie couldn’t - didn’t want to - question it because that’s his twin and-
Leo looks so young. So small. So hurt. And that- doesn’t change.
His shell is permanently cracked, so Donnie works on a battle shell.
He’s always cold, so Donnie makes a heat lamp.
His wounds never stop bleeding, so Donnie produces reinforced bandages.
And yet, despite all of this, Leo keeps getting hurt.
And yet, despite that, Donnie is still so fucking grateful Leo’s home.
Because finally. Donnie can breathe again.
Leo may end up alone one day, at the rate things were going.
So Donnie gonna make sure he’s got some company. Even if that company is a robot.
_____________
Mikey almost gets Leo back, that day.
He struggles and struggles, knowing he can open a portal if he tried hard enough. He knows he has it in him, he can feel it, but he also feels a sharp twinge in his arm from where the Krang snapped at it, so he’s given a brief flicker of orange before his arm falls to his side.
Before he fails in getting Leo back.
He tries again when he gets back control of his arm, but whatever he managed in the moment had passed.
Nothing but fizzles. Whiffs of uselessness.
He’s inconsolable and screaming for hours, hours, and for a while, the happy ball of sunshine he used to be has dimmed into stone. Expressionless and weary.
And then Draxum said he could teach Mikey.
And Mikey had hope. Just like Leo had said a ninja’s greatest weapon was.
Leo was always so cool, so confident. He’d play with Mikey and always got on his level. He’d protect Mikey when needed most, but let him be when not.
Leo had instilled hope in them, that day, and Mikey was ashamed that he allowed it to be extinguished so easily.
So, Mikey trains. Day after day, until he can reliably use his abilities without coming apart at the seams (and, sometimes/often/always Mikey wonders if maybe that’s okay, if it means Leo is back.)
But he acquiesces when Splinter looks at his spiderweb scars in horror.
It takes years, too long, much too long, (so long he has hair now-) but Mikey is finally able to do it.
He gets Leo out and-
And-
His brother.
Leo.
Leo was dead.
Mikey was too late. He failed Leo again.
Mikey doesn’t remember anything other than screaming, his own screaming, but he remembered Raph’s sudden change in expression, and how the snapper trailed off.
And Mikey remembered turning around, and feeling Hope flare up once more.
Leo was back, he was alive, and Mikey didn’t care how or why. He had problems, he was young looking, he was horribly wounded (always, now), he was kinda cursed, but he was home.
Leo wasn’t okay.
He wouldn’t talk about why either.
Mikey could figure some things out, off context clues alone, but the rest he’d need from the source.
But, Mikey wasn’t about to push his brother away. So he accepted the deflections and chose the next best thing - sticking as close as he could.
Gosh, he missed his brother so badly. He’d been training so much, so thoroughly, that six years came and went both agonizingly slowly and incredibly fast. He can only image it was similar for Leo.
So. So! Mikey has decided to live his life to the fullest, even if- even if Leo will outlive them. For the time he has, he will live for himself and his family.
And maybe look into how mystic spirits could stick around after death.
_____________
As for your last question - there’s some aspects of Leo’s return that are hard to deal with, undeniably so, but they’re more just. So happy he’s back. It’s 1000% more of a good thing than anything else. They missed him terribly, and weren’t the same with him gone, even if they were functional.
They weren’t whole without him. Just as he wasn’t whole without them.

During the opening of the movie Casey Junior looses his Sensei (the future version of Leo) & while I am by no means an expert on grief throughout the movie it could be argued that Casey Junior is going through something close to the five stages of grief over that loss.
Tumblr media
Stage 1: Denial
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Casey Junior: How am I gonna save them all, Sensei? I really wish you were here. Wait, you are! I just need to find you
When Casey Junior finds himself in the past/ present he struggles to know what to do after the loss of his Sensei who had most likely been there to guide him his whole life, however when Casey Junior begins to contemplate that he will now have to live without his Sensei there to help him, he immediately backtracks when he realises that the past/ present versions of Leo is still alive.
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: You told me to find the key and stop the Krang
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: That’s exactly how you freed all those families from the Krang labour camp
There are multiple moments where Casey Junior talks to Leo as if he’s the same Master Leonardo that trained him because there’s a part of Casey Junior that doesn’t want to admit that his Sensei is gone so he’s trying to act as though nothing has changed by treating Leo the same way he would treat ‘Master Leonardo’
Stage 2: Anger
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: The world needs Master Leonardo. And all we got is this guy
When Leo isn’t able to be exactly the same as the Master Leonardo that Casey Junior knew however, Casey Junior responds in anger to Leo’s actions.
Part of this scene is Casey Junior being frustrated with Leo’s actions but it’s also possible that part of his anger also comes from the fact that Casey Junior is realising that even if he treats Leo like his Sensei, Leo can’t act like the man he knew as the past/ present Leo hasn’t had the experiences that made ‘Master Leonardo’
Stage 3: Bargaining
Tumblr media
Casey Junior: Leo, please! I can’t loose you again
The confrontation between Leo & Casey Junior gives Leo the push he needs to step up as a leader & Leo begins acting more like the version of Leonardo that Casey Junior knew
Tumblr media
Future Leonardo: We’ve still got a ninja’s greatest weapon... hope.
Tumblr media
Leo: We still have hope!
Casey Junior: A ninja’s greatest weapon
Leo: Hey I like that
After Leo displays traits that remind Casey Junior of Leo’s future self Casey Junior begins to occasionally call Leo ‘sensei’ again because even though Casey Junior has realised that Leo isn’t the same as the man that trained him & that his sensei is gone, he still sees pieces of his sensei in Leo which makes him want to hold onto Leo as the last pieces of his sensei that he has left
Tumblr media
Leo: When I get to the other side, you close that door
Casey Junior: What? Sensei, no!
Even though Casey Junior is no longer trying to pretend as though nothing has changed & act like Leo & ‘Master Leonardo’ are the exact same people, Casey Junior is still wants to hold onto something close to what he’s lost.
Stage 4: Depression
Tumblr media
When Leo sacrifices himself & Casey looses the last piece of his Sensei that he had left, all he can do is break down in grief
Stage 5: Acceptance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Towards the end of the movie Casey is shown to be part of the present Hamato Clan with a new family picture taken to include him, even though Casey might still be mourning the family he lost he’s slowly but surely healing along with the family that he has now
