taken me ages but behold archive karecktors

adolin and maya beloved but also the most time consuming because i had to figure out how the hell i was going to do adolin's hair and not hate looking at it, and maya took me forever to figure out the colours lol. looked at so many references trying to figure out what dead vines should look like and what i would like it to look and i couldnt really find what i wanted lol. but what i went for was like really dried out and very very dead looking fibre. that wasnt too bad but trying to figure out her clothes that would look decent before and after she becomes a deadeye was hell for me an amateur colour theory understander lmao

i have drawn shallan before so she wasn't too difficult but i was truly torn about which version of pattern i wanted to show?? so i did a few of them hahah. i did a canon compliant version, alluding a bit to BE NOT AFRAID angel vibes. but im pretty passionate about ferrofluid-looking pattern as thats what i picture in my head (but i couldnt really find a good reference so i couldnt really do it well. it's also like, about the way it moves more than a still frame so extra challenge). and if you've seen my shallan art you know i. asdlkfjh. i originally pictured pattern as a QR code so i was compelled to continue it. @mistbjorn this one's for you because youre so right <3

syl i usually picture similar to kida in disney's atlantis when she merges with the crystal and you can see her scalp beneath her transparent hair, so thats the inspo for her. for the sylspear i designed it to look a bit like a caduceus as homage to kaladin's medical training and his dad, and like it's not that deep but i guess the swirly glowy bits are his duality and being torn between two worlds etc etc or you can just picture spren zipping about if you want lol like i definitely pictured syl was one but the other makes no sense

the kholins i dont have much to say since they were not part of my original plan hahaha but i couldn't help adding them too. i lowkey struggled to make them unique but also similar because family alksdjfhs i was sketching this around a time i did a lot of face studies so it was so whack and the colouring absolutely killed me so it is what it is asldkjaklsdjf

Syl: *walks over to me while I'm changing a kid's diaper*

Me: "Hey, can you take a step back and give him some privacy?"

Syl, plaintively: "I wanna see the tushie!"

Elhokar: *sees one of the other kids crying, starts crying in a very obviously fake way*

Me: "Aww, are you sad because no one's paying attention to you?"

Elhokar: *sniffles* "Yeah."

Lift: took a running jump onto the table, slid across on her stomach, and started hoovering up another kid's Cheerios with her mouth

The Mink: the new playground fence was specifically built to be her-proof; she escaped four times before it had been up for two days

Gavilar: Asked another kid "[name], can I hit you please?" in the sweetest most polite voice and then hit them before they could answer

Renarin: *extremely matter of fact and adult voice* "I'm going to bring my blankie to shul so I don't get scared by the loud noises."

Wyndle: Pointed at a wooden rocking chair, gasped, and said "whoa, that chair is beautiful!"

Gavinor: His mom came in to pick him up and he ran away, climbed on the table, and yelled "NO MOMMY! GRANDMA GRANDPA UP!"

Cryptics: Dragged some chairs over to the rug, sat down, and went "MMMMMMMM" for several minutes for no discernible reason

"unite them" they say but the longer this goes on the more difficult it is for me to see why. "for the good of alethkar" they say, but are you sure it isnt just for the good of your conscience. are you sure you arent just hungry for more? you say you want the war to end and i believe you want to want that but how can you lead a kingdom dependent on tyranny outside of a war? you need to lead and you dont want to admit this need because you are still jealous of your brother who is dead because you failed him (but wasn't a small part of you relieved? wasn't there this small ugly corner in the back of your mind who had thought about doing it yourself?). you need to lead and you don't want to admit this need because you know you are unforgivable but why else would you have shown the king how easily you could kill him? you feel bad for not feeling bad because you would do it again. the slaughter and the killing and the pillaging and the murder. "unite them". it is for the good of alethkar after all. blood is the food that feeds our greatness. a small price to pay. only a brother. you are unforgivable because of that day. because of the drink. you want to believe the regret is because you couldn't save him. no more alcohol. the regret eats you alive so you have to lead. eat blood. in the end those are the same things. you are unforgivable because of that day and you want to believe that it is because you couldn't save him but there is that tiny ugly corner in the back of your mind. what is it that you regret? a difficult question to ask, better to become insane instead. not insane, just writing on the wall. save the bridgemen, be merciful, be a good ruler even if you aren't the king. you say you don't want to kill but you know the blood is necessary to save the machine. does this make you a hypocrite? you are not unforgivable for the killing you are unforgivable for not regretting you are unforgivable for that night. gavilar, radiant and beloved and always brighter, always more important, always more respected. you regret not being able to save him - yes, that must be it. anything else is inconceivable. although what difference does it make when you are unforgivable anyways. the king is all that is left from your brother. you show him how easy you could kill him, show yourself how dependent he is on you. the king that is terrified and paranoid and all that is left of your brother. the king, always in your shadow, almost like back then. you know you are unforgivable but you are too scared to ask why. it is not your fault that blood must be spilled. your sons are good. your sons are good. renarin needs to be a soldier but it is not your fault the world is the way it is. even if it is, sometimes. but only when you are brave. liquid courage, they say, which is why you don't drink anymore. the way of kings, you say, because how could someone so devoted to his brother's last words be relieved by his death. you need to lead, for the good of alethkar. a kingdom of tyranny needs war and blood and food which is why you never take off your uniform. the way of kings, you say, for the good of alethkar. you look at the king, the only thing left from your brother, and don't ask yourself what it is you can't be forgiven for.

Gavilars character arc has been such a beautiful thing across the entire series and the fact he's been literally dead for all of it makes it so much better

first, we see him as the amazing king who united a nation and sought for peace and glory yet was killed too soon for seemingly no reason

then we find out he was shadier than we first expected, knowing more than he lets on with his involvement in the wider cosmere

then we find out hes the one who first intended to resurrect a god of literal evil and destruction and was an all around abusive, arrogant fuck who abused his wife and forced her to still lie about how good a person he was to preserve his legacy

and now the stormlight five prologue comes along and the entire fandom can collectively go "Ohhhh he's an absolute fucking idiot"
