Welcome to my neighbourhood, prime location for all things #gentrification We have empty apartments, lofts, and rentals everywhere- and also homeless people, kids, everywhere... people who work and can't afford the sky-high rent ANYWHERE in Tampa. Meanwhile, landlords would rather sit on empty property, making $0/mo to not "bring down property values" instead of lowering the rent to reasonable, affordable rates to get SOME money every month. 🤨 A group of volunteers, including myself, spent the past two weeks relocating and stabilizing a family of 8, including six homeless children. None had been in school for a long time. No regular access to showers, clean clothes, to food. Found being evicted again from a broken down hotel. It took pressure on the county to get social services to step in and at least get the kids registered in school without residency papers (parents IDs had expired from out of county). At least they get two free meals a day there. It's absolutely ridiculous! 😡 In what is said to be the "greatest country on earth", we made it impossible to get children food and housing, while surrounded by trendy restaurants and empty apartments! What hell is this?! I spent too long today on it, but I mod a group that I made for #tampa residents to get resources for low-income services, inc. housing, food, shelter, showers, medical care, and more. Gentrification, Artwashing, & The Creative Placemaking Hustle This particular series of #Groundtruthings was prompted by an article in the San Diego Union Tribune “LA-style studios crop up in East Village, as not-so-broke artists collect at The Ratner “ by Brittany Meiling. In the article Brittany characterizes the rising rents and displacement of local residents “in a once-derelict neighborhood (best known for housing cash-strapped artists)” as “out with the boho artists, in with the cash-flow-positive ones”. “LA-style” that is, she and the developers say they are making room for an influx of “Los Angeles-style production companies”. The big idea in the I.D.E.A district and Makers Quarter, is “to attract workers and companies to the neighborhood, with a focus on creative technology.” Their “idea” isn’t a very good one (cash-flow negative), and is based simply on UCSD’s plans to build satellite campuses for its art department in the area. Brittany and these developers actually describe digital media in their hype, as “a new media” in a “tech-forward neighborhood” while distinguishing painters and sculptors as “more traditional artists”. This bankrupt perception is what really resonated with me. The uncultivated and naive impression of contemporary visual art and artists that is echoed throughout America’s finest soccer city, San Diego. It was truly a heartfelt experience filming and witnessing the deeply melancholy yet spiritually empowering and uplifting dance and music ritual of African diaspora performance artist @atadjalewa who radically transformed himself, as is tradition in Haiti for Karnaval, using black & white body paint and burning the equivalent of Africa’s sacred incense /herb, impepho, as a call to the ancestors to invoke a trance and allow the ancestors witness what has happened and is happening to the Haitian community in Miami and to symbolically reclaim the stolen land. 2 artists, @atadjalewa from #Guadeloupe and @henritauliaut an amazing Afro-punk and bio-art performance artist from #Martinique and the RaRa band are reclaiming historical land in this site-specific space, the Miami Design District, which is now sadly, mostly an inane, useless, consumerism mass of ugly, luxury designer fashion stores, whereas before it was a rich, spiritual, community, a beloved home of many Haitians. Miami’s tragic gentrification creep further threatens displacement of Haitians living in Miami’s Little Haiti. "The idea that people of color don’t have an interest in biking and bike infrastructure persists—bike lanes have even been referred to derisively as “white lanes”— but researchers say the data does not back up the claim. The problem is when marginalized communities feel like their needs are being ignored in favor of someone else’s they push back. . They are pushing back because they feel that there are other priorities that they’ve been requesting and asking of the city and have not gotten, yet cities have been strategic and aggressive at pushing bicycle infrastructure. So they’re not opposed to biking. But they want housing, they want jobs, security and other things first. . People of color report these barriers to biking—fear of robbery or assault, fear of being stranded, and fear of being profiled by police—that often go unmentioned by white, affluent bike advocates. . Critics of Complete Streets philosophy say that it doesn’t take into account neighborhood problems that are distinct from a bad intersection or unsafe crosswalk. It may be that there’s a street where there’s not a bike lane or there’s not a good sidewalk, but that same street may also have problems with over-policing of Black people, or a feeling of vulnerability for people based on their concerns of gender-based harassment, or perhaps feeling insecure because of their immigration status. So the Complete Streets model is not something that encompasses those other vectors of what makes people safe or not safe. . Complete Streets advocates who want safer roadways and sidewalks must see that transportation and land use are linked, you can’t push for Complete Streets without having specific goals around economic development, job access, and affordable housing.
