okay so i'm watching the MonsterVerse movies for the first time. so far i've seen Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island and while i think they're both pretty mid, i think Kong was the better movie and i had a lot more fun with it than Godzilla 2014, which started off pretty interesting but as it went on i just wasn't that interested. i thought it'd be the other way around, but Kong really surprised me and i had fun with it. i rated Godzilla 5/10 and Kong 6/10, so i think they're both alright movies, but i only actively enjoyed Kong. i feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but i'd be intrigued to hear what other people think. i'll let you know what i think of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong after i've seen them.

New Q&A with Alexander Skarsgård and Esquire Middle East
‘Alexander Skarsgård on pro wrestling, death metal, the joys of Godzilla vs Kong’ - by William Mullally, March 25, 2021
The Swedish star speaks to Esquire Middle East about his latest film, being home in Stockholm, and staying ripped for The Northman during quarantine
Alexander Skarsgård did not have the 2020 the rest of us did. There was no quiet quarantine, no tubs of ice cream devoured at three in the morning, no existential boredom, no staring out the window as we wondered if we’d ever be able to start doing things again.
No, Skarsgård had to spend the year staying in the best shape of his life to play an honest-to-god Viking warrior and Nordic prince Amleth in Robert Eggers’ upcoming epic The Northman. Not that he minded, of course.
Skarsgård is in a very good place. Before The Northman, he filmed Godzilla vs. Kong, which was one of the most joyful experiences of his career. It’s a film that is much better than anyone could have hoped, that fixes the flaws of the previous outings of the franchise in Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of Monsters by making its supporting characters actually interesting to follow—including Skarsgård’s turn as a conspiracy-loving mad scientist named Nathan Lind—and making the battle between the legendary behemoths the stuff of Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant.
Esquire Middle East caught up with the 44-year-old Swedish actor, who is aging like a vampire, fittingly enough, over Zoom ahead of the film’s release.
Read the full ESQ&A with Alexander Skarsgård below:
Alex, it’s great to see you again. How are you?
I’m pretty good. You’re in Dubai, right? I’m in Stockholm, Sweden at the moment.
How long have you been home?
I’ve been here for two months now since I wrapped The Northman.
How’s that been?
Yeah, it's been really nice. I mean, it's obviously a difficult time, but considering everything, I'm lucky, because everyone is doing alright. It's a nice opportunity for me, as I'm constantly on the road normally. It’s great to just be home, and not just for a week around Christmas or weekend over summer. I actually get to be here and spend some real time with my family.
You didn’t have any downtime in 2020?
Well, I was actually shooting for most of 2020. When the pandemic hit, I was in Belfast about to start filming the Northman, then we shut down for three months, and during that I had to train basically. It's a very physical role, so I had to keep working out. I was still in work mode for the whole lockdown. Then in July, we started shooting till the end of the year.
Did you prefer it that way?
I was very grateful to be able to work. It was definitely different from the normal set because we were completely isolated. We got tested three times a week and I basically lived in a bubble up in the hills of Northern Ireland and didn't see anyone didn't do anything for six months other than work and sleep and train.
I have a friend Adlai who lives in that village in Northern Ireland and I kept trying to get him to go break into your set because I needed to know more about this movie.
It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The most amazing experience.
You’ve been making a habit of working with great horror filmmakers, with Robert Eggers (The Witch) on the Northman, and Adam Wingard (You’re Next) on Godzilla vs. Kong.
What’s interesting about all these guys like Adam and Rob Eggers is they produce these really dark and twisted movies but they are two of the nicest human beings I've ever met. They're so sweet and genuine.
What do you and Adam like to talk about?
Death metal, probably. He's a big metal fan.
Are death metal people sweethearts, generally speaking?
Yeah, actually. Sometimes I feel like that's sometimes the case when you meet musicians in death metal bands they're like the sweetest, loveliest people who talk about their grandmothers and stuff.
Why do you think that is?
Maybe it's cathartic. It's a way to get out all that dark energy onto the big screen or as a musician onto an album.
Did you and Adam click immediately?
I met him years ago for another project. We didn’t end up working together on that but it was such a memorable meeting that we stayed in touch over the years. He’s not only a wonderful guy but so intelligent, such a film buff who knew everything about not only the horror genre, but even just films in general. When Godzilla vs Kong came up, I was just really excited to get an opportunity to work with him.
Were the words ‘Godzilla’ and ‘Kong’ enough for you, or did something specific draw you to this one?
I think it was a combination. I had just come off of a couple of really dark intense projects. I did the Little Drummer Girl, which is a limited series based on the John le Carré novel about conflicts in the Middle East, and I just come off Big Little Lies, two seasons of domestic abuse.
Did you just need something different?
It was just really two of the most rewarding experiences of my career but also really, really draining really intense experiences. I was just craving something fun and exciting. I hadn't done any big tent pole matinee-style movies and since Tarzan.
But you said it was a combination—are you also a Godzilla nerd?
Oh man, I was like a little boy. I just got giddy when I saw the renderings, the drawings, the storyboards, like the world that they wanted to create. I thought tonally they were the right people to make this kind of movie because I thought they had the balls to go all the way and make it as big and crazy and fun as it as I think it deserves to be, with the right amount of sarcasm and irony, but while still taking the topic seriously, and the characters seriously, and really caring about both Kong and Godzilla.
Did you and Adam share a lot creatively back and forth?
Oh, yeah. He would run up to me and ask what if they run into a creature that almost looks like an owl and start explaining how it works. And then you start sketching something on a piece of tissue. And then a week later, he would come back with something amazing that the visual artists have created. To be part of that from an early stage is so exciting to me.
As a pro wrestling fan, that balance of ironic and serious you mentioned sounds awfully familiar to me. Did you guys make a pro wrestling movie on purpose?
It’s a lot like pro wrestling. Like, you want the fights to be big spectacular, fun, and entertaining. But you want to care about the wrestlers, right? You want to root for them. I think Adam did such a great job in finding that tone. They beat the sh*t out of each other on an aircraft carrier, but you also want to connect with these creatures and care about them. The movie asks, what does Kong really wants other than beat up Godzilla? What is he longing for in life?
That’s exactly what I think when I watch the Undertaker throw Mankind off Hell in a Cell.
Absolutely!
Godzilla vs. Kong is in theaters now across the Middle East

So what are your feelings about these three things:
1. Godzila vs. Kong movie
2. Final Fantasy VII remake part two coming soon.
3. Monster Hunter movie
1. Indifferent. Never been super into either franchise. But like.... shouldn’t it be extremely one sided? Isn’t Godzilla like... powered by Nuclear Armageddon or something like that? Vs a big angry ape? But whatever I’m probably not gonna see it.
2. Haven’t played any version of Final Fantasy 7, but I have friends who are excited. It looks pretty cool and I’d probably like it if I actually sat down to play it but I just haven’t gotten down to it. ...And like ...how am I supposed to get attached to Aerith if I already know what happens to her? Cause everyone and their grandpa knows that particular spoiler now? She seems like an alright character but if I know she’s gonna get skewered by Supergoth then I’m gonna be keeping her at an emotional arm’s length the whole time because I’m afraid to feel emotions.
3. It looks sorta like the person making it is totally missing the point of the Monster Hunter universe. It looks like any other gritty dirty washed-out serious movie to me. Totally joyless. Totally missing the reason why people love Monster Hunter. ...Of course this might be totally off base and it turns out the commercials were misleading. But I don’t expect so. I have no plans to see it unless I hear that my current judgement is unfounded.
But regardless of my opinions, please, by all means, if you enjoy these things then more power to you.
-TQ

Honest thoughts on Godzilla vs. Kong:
Wow. For something that was set up for years and delayed several times, this battle of the century was pretty short. Now I have only one thing to say about this movie: go fuck yourself, godzilla! just kidding I still love ya big guy, but also fuck you! I was going into this not chosing teams, but I'm slightly irritated godzilla won. he spent the whole movie trying to kill this innocent ape who didn't do nothing wrong and he gets the W? Get outta here! We have sweet, kind hearted kong who just wanted to live in peace and spend time with his daughter, and you people and the director stan that crazy lizard? such outrageous favoritism! Godzilla's motives in this movie do and do not make sense, so yeah, kinda hard to side with him in this one. I don't think I ever did actually. I just love him as a character, but he's really an asshole. Kong always did win me over though. How could you not root for him? He did not deserve the shit he received this whole series!
everything else is alright. I like it as a whole, but hate it just for that fact they made my two favorites fight. So... (6\10)

Heart of the Vanguard Concept Chapter part 1
(Concept chapters are basically just to test to see if people will like a fic idea I have. This fic crosses over Yugioh Duel Monsters and Cardfight Vanguard.)
(Note: Besides the god cards this fic will stick to tcg/ocg effects for simplicity. People can also still stupidly set cards in face up defense position.)
Yugi double checked that he had everything with him before making his trip. He tiptoed out of the door he sweat dropped as he felt a fiery glare aimed directly at him. It was his grandfather Solomon Mutou holding a broom as he had been previously sweeping with tightly.
“You're not going to another card shop, are you Yugi?”, his grandfather questioned, remembering the invitation his grandson had received earlier.
“W-what…of course not grandpa. I’m just uh...going to hangout with my friends. You know Jonouchi and the others.”, Yugi replied nervously.
“Um hm...well have fun!”, Solomon replied with a wave before going back to sweeping.
After closing the door the young Mutou took a sigh of relief. He met up with his friends Jonouchi, Anzu, and Honda in the subway.
“Took you long enough Yug!”, Jonouchi said.
“Sorry, you know how my grandpa gets at the idea of us going to other card shops.”, Yugi replied.
“Yeah...reminds me of when we went to Duke’s.”, Honda replied, sweat dropping.
“Hopefully Jonouchi doesn’t end up in a dog suit this time.”, Anzu teased.
“Shut up!!! No one’s making a dog out of me this time!”, Jonouchi yelled.
“Better hope we don’t run into Kaiba on the way.”, Honda replied much to Jonouchi’s chagrin.
“If I see Kaiba I’ll wipe the floor with him!!!”, Jonouchi yelled.
“Guys the bus.”, Yugi pointed out as he saw everyone boarding.
They all hastily ran onto the train so they didn’t miss it. They took a sigh of relief as Yugi looked out the window. The buildings passed by like a blur. It always felt weird for him to leave Domino City. He always seemed to be off on some strange supernatural adventure every time but this time it was different. He was going to see friends. A definite nice change of pace.
After they finally got out of the subway they were greeted with a big expansive city.
“How are we supposed to find that tiny card shop in this mess?”, Jonouchi questioned.
“Well, we got there once. We just have to find where we are so we can find it.”, Anzu replied, looking over at the map.
“Maybe we're better off calling Misaki for directions. She has a perfect memory after all.”, Honda suggested.
“Oh, that’s right!”, Anzu gasped, as she brought out her phone and started calling her number.
The phone rang a few times before it was answered.
“Oh, Anzu. Are you guys almost here?”, Misaki asked, though there was an extreme amount of background noise.
“We're having a bit of trouble. We have just arrived outside the station and this place is a bit...big. I was wondering if you could give some directions to the shop?”, Anzu asked.
“Hmm...I guess the city is pretty big. Alright.”, Misaki replied as she started giving them directions.
They were astounded at how accurate it all was. She wasn’t even there but she was leading them perfectly throughout the city. On the way they stopped as they saw a familiar face.
“Gah, Kai?!”, Yugi gasped.
It was indeed the aloof fighter Toshiki Kai. Along with him was a blond haired teen with grey eyes. He wore the same school uniform as Kai. Jonouchi growled as he saw the older teen.
“You guys are here?”, Kai questioned, completely ignoring Jonouchi’s growling.
“Yeah, Aichi invited us to come over remember?”, Anzu replied and Kai simply nodded.
“Man, this is so cool to think we’d meet the King of Games in the flesh!”, the blond said.
“Hehe. I’m not that great, I'm just an average teen like you guys.”, Yugi replied with no hint of irony.
“Cool. Name’s Taishi Miwa. Looks like you guys already know Kai. Though let’s be real who doesn’t?”, Miwa introduced.
“Yeah. My name’s Mutou Yugi. Oh wait...you already know that.”, Yugi replied.
“Yeah...average.”, Kai replied blandly with a hint of sarcasm, rolling his eyes as he remembered Battle City.
“Well...average kid with an ancient magic necklace.”, Yugi replied awkwardly.
“Uh huh...you're just as ‘normal’ as Aichi and Ren.”, Kai replied, which made Yugi sweat drop.
“I’m gonna clean your clock in a duel!”, Jonouchi said to Kai.
“I don’t need another hyper kid like Kamui constantly challenging me to duels.”, Kai replied.
“Grr! I’m no kid!”, Jonouchi replied.
“Really? You sure act like one.”, Kai replied.
“Down boy. You can duel him at the shop.”, Honda said as he put his arm on Jonouchi’s shoulder.
“Hey I’m no dog!!!”, Jonouchi yelled as Honda pushed him along.
Eventually they stopped before a small card shop named ‘Card Capital’. It had a poster on the front and a sliding door. The small shop was completely crowded by people clamoring to get inside.
“Hehe, maybe Misaki can give grandpa some pointers on how to get his shop this busy.”, Yugi commented.
He jumped as some turned around to see him.
“Oh my god, is that the King of Games!”
“He’s here!”
“I thought he was taller?”
“Would he really be in a place like this?”
The door slid open and they saw Misaki on the other side. She had on a white dress shirt and a orange apron with two Cs.
“Are you guys gonna come in or will I have to give your spots to one of these guys?”, Misaki questioned.
“No need. Come on guys!”, Anzu said.
They all walked into the shop. It was just as tiny as they remembered. It was full of posters advertising various card games. It had lots of chairs and tables including two standing tables. The front desk had various card packs and there was a display on the other side with various assortments of rare cards. The shop was packed with various people dueling. It was rather lively for such a small shop.
“Is it always like this?”, Anzu asked.
“Nosy? Yes. Packed? Only when we host shop tournaments here.”, Misaki replied.
“You scoundrel!!!”, they turned their attention to a familiar voice.
They walked over to see Aichi and Kamui. The latter of which shook the former by the collar. Aichi laughed it off raising up his hands in surrender. A redheaded girl with blue eyes was trying to diffuse the situation. She wore a pink top with an orange tie and a blue skirt.
“Kamui calm down.”, the redheaded girl said.
Aichi sweat dropped as the younger boy continued to shake him.
“It’s fine Kamui. I think you’re overreacting.”, Aichi replied.
“Yeah, he just beat Emi in a duel.”, a teen with brown hair and eyes wearing a grey uniform replied.
“He just?”, Kamui questioned.
“Yeah…”, Aichi replied.
None of them seemed to notice them yet.
“You were supposed to let Miss Emi win!”, Kamui shouted.
“I was?!”, Aichi questioned, completely confused.
“I don’t get what the big deal is.”, Honda commented.
“It’s best if you don’t try to understand Kamui’s stupidity. You might catch it.”, Misaki replied casually.
“You say that as if you wanted Aichi to hold back against me.”, Emi replied.
“Well... I!”, Kamui was saying before he was cut off.
“I wanted to duel him at his best. Why would I want him to hold back?”, Emi replied, crossing her arms as Kamui shrinked back.
“It’s fine Emi. Kamui just got a bit overexcited.”, Aichi replied, brushing it off.
“Overexcited is an understatement.”, Miwa chuckled, making Aichi turn his attention to the new arrivals.
Aichi’s eyes brightened up as he saw them.
“Kai! Yugi! Miwa! Jonouchi!”, Aichi said.
“Are we gonna talk about how he called out Kai first…”, Honda commented as he sweat dropped.
The short teen was practically beaming which made Yugi blush. Though, he was at least taller than Yugi though not by much.
“No need to be so excited it’s just us.”, Yugi replied as he rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.
“Oh, that’s that Yugi guy right? Didn’t you duel him in Battle City?”, Emi questioned.
“Yeah, your looking at the King of Games here!”, Jonouchi said as he gestured to Yugi.
“Woah cool!”, Emi replied.
“Oh uh...this is my little sister Emi.”, Aichi introduced gesturing Emi.
“Sister?!”, the Yugi gang gasped.
Jonouchi bent down to Aichi’s level.
“Don’t tell me she has crazy psychic powers too?”, Jonouchi whispered, causing Aichi to sweat drop.
“Uh...no. At least I don’t think so.”, Aichi replied.
“You don’t think so?”, Jonouchi replied as he pulled back sweat dropping.
“Hopefully it doesn’t run in the family.”, Honda whispered nervously.
“Yeah…”, Anzu replied as she sweat dropped.
“Since your here do you want to duel, Yugi?”, Aichi asked with a light blush.
“Gosh, why are you always so nervous, kid?”, Jonouchi questioned.
“I’d love to Aichi! It’s time to duel!”, Yugi replied.
“He said the thing!”, a black haired teen with v shaped hair and brown eyes with a grey uniform said.
“Oh my god this is awesome!”, the brown haired guy from before gushed.
Yugi chuckled, blushing nervously at all the attention he was getting.
“Their like two anxious peas in a pot.”, Anzu commented.
“Are we going to duel in here. I don’t think the holograms would fit.”, Yugi replied as Aichi blinked.
“Oh...yeah that’s true. We were dueling retro style with the Battle City rules in here since there’s still a lot of people who don’t have duel disks.”, Aichi replied.
“Oh? Retro’s fine.”, Yugi assured.
“Okay.”, Aichi replied as he nodded.
“You guys should use the standing fight table.”, Shin suggested.
“Who wants to stand and fight without the duel disks anymore?”, Misaki questioned, making Shin sulk.
“Well, how was I supposed to know that Kaiba would build portable hologram systems to duel with?!”, Shin questioned.
“I guess we’ll sit?”, Aichi asked.
“Yeah.”, Yugi replied.
“Oh man this will be awesome! It’s like Godzilla vs Kong or Devilman vs Mazinger Z!”, the brown haired teen gushed, embarrassing the two.
“Heh, I could take them.”, the v haired teen proclaimed as he crossed his arms.
“Oh really why don’t we duel tough guy?”, Jonouchi suggested.
“Alright I’ll take you on 3rd place Duelist Kingdom guy!”, the v haired teen replied, causing a tick mark to appear on Jonouchi’s head.
“Hey it’s Katsuya Jonouchi!!! And it was second place! I lost to Yugi!”, Jonouchi corrected.
“Yeah, whatever 3rd place guy my name is Katsumi Morikawa! You will forever remember my name after the beat down your about to endure!”, Morikawa proclaimed, causing many in the shop to sweat drop.
“You're going to wipe the floor with him, Jonouchi. He’s the worst duelist I’ve ever seen.”, Kamui commented.
“As if! I’ll show you Kamui!”, Morikawa growled.
Aichi and Yugi sweat dropped at the conversation around them.
“Are they always like this?”, Yugi questioned.
“Would you believe it’s usually worse?”, Aichi replied, making Yugi chuckle nervously.
“I know that feeling.”, Yugi replied.
Kai and Miwa had seated themselves down at one of the tables. Some duelists had actually lined up to challenge the aloof fighter.
Yugi noticed Yami’s spirit hovering over his shoulder.
“Oh, it’s just a normal duel for fun Yami.”, Yugi said.
“Fun?”, Yami questioned.
“Yeah, it’s not always shadow realm and convoluted plots.”, Yugi replied.
“Oh, hello Yami.”, Aichi greeted waving at the spirit.
“Who’s he waving at?”, Miwa questioned, confused.

Godzilla Singular Point
I'm not much of a “binger” for the most part but I got the whole series Godzilla: Singular Point watched in about 4 days I think. Let's start positive: I think the 3D models for the monsters work a lot better than most anime 3D models, they're still fairly apparent but it seems like they blend with the rest of the art alright. The designs are mostly fairly good too, there's some ugly ones in there but I kind of don't mind them? Monsters can be ugly sometimes and not just cool looking, a few here and there in the cast doesn't hurt anything. It's nice to see some nods to the more obscure kaiju too, there's a lot of interesting and fun monsters from Toho's old movies and it gets a little tiring to be hit with nonstop Godzilla-Mothra-Ghidorah-MechaGodzilla incarnations every single time there's a new take on Godzilla. I like a lot about the premise, the apocalyptic rise of kaiju around the world as they bring their habitat/environment with them into our world, terraforming it into a world of monsters. It's not new by any means, but it's usually not the approach taken witht the Toho monsters and it's a good excuse to fit a lot of them into a setting quickly. The end credit sequence is pretty great, I hit 'watch credits' every time on my watch. Heck, the whole series might be better if it was more like its own end credits.
I think Godzilla: Singular Point could have been better, but we've also seen worse recently. I've only dabbled in storytelling but I suspect a lot of its problems come from overcompensating, specifically: “Godzilla movies/media are dumb” being met with “Oh yeah, well how about one based on theoretical quantum physics” just didn't work out. I actually think what they use in the series is a fine technobabble excuse for the monsters having powers and durability beyond science, but I also don't feel like kaiju media really needs that excuse. It's fine though, I think the sheer quantity of the technobabble is the biggest problem with it. I've been listening to discussions of theoretical multi-dimensional physics for a while now, so I think I might have been better prepared than average but it's still a chore to get my head around so I know it's going to lose a majority of the general population. One big question I have is why did they give the main characters the wrong interests? Yun, who is into future predictions deals with the monsters, and Mei who is studying theoretical impossible animals deals with the future predicting technology end of the plot... I could get that if the idea was to raise tension by making the wrong people have to work outside their field of expertise, but that's not what happens, they're both pretty good “omnidisciplinary scientist” sorts who don't have much problem learning a whole new field. Honestly they really should have been assigned the other interests though, Yun studying fantastical creature ideas and Mei the future stuff.
While I like the premise and some of the stuff they do with the monsters, there's also a lot that's disappointing – The Kumonga-Megalon-Hedorah hybrids really need some explaining. Why are there three monsters in one species? Just to reference as much old material as possible at once? As far as I'm concerned Anguirus is the stand out star of the series and they kill him far too quickly. The series could also be called a fairly cozy catastrophe too, for the most part the worst thing happening for most people is losing their internet connection, kind of seems like a monster apocalypse should have a bit more than that going on. That said it's not nearly the disappointment that the Polygon Pictures trilogy is, which managed to take the most interesting and unique premise the Godzilla franchise has ever had and do basically nothing with it.
I might give Singular Point something like 6 out of 10, and I think a second season might have enough room for improvement that I'm not against it.
For the heck of it:
Shin Godzilla: The most common criticisms are right (dull, Godzilla has no personality, the humans are more random bureaucrats than characters), but so are most the common praise (topical in its way, punchy with its political critique, holy hell that weapons upgrade on Godzilla). Which one outweighs the other is a simple matter of personal preference. I don't have super strong feelings about it and it will be one of my least re-watched Godzilla movies ever, up with  Godzilla's Revenge.
Polygon Trilogy: AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRG. The only things worth watching are Godzilla Earth avenging Godzilla filius and Ghidorah's destruction of the spaceship (wasn't it Atrium or something? I'm feeling too lazy to look it up) but unfortunately there's an awful lot of crap around those bits. Ok, I exaggerate a little but not much. I kind of appreciate how they tried to subvert the classic “your life goals or your love interest” kind of scenario, but she wasn't much of a character so it didn't have much impact to kill her off and the main character is an unlikable jerk too.
Legendary's Monsterverse: Godzilla 2014: Too much of its run time is boring for me to recommend it but the monster stuff is too well done for me to ever dismiss it outright.
Godzilla King of the Monsters: I get why people have a problem with it, but I appreciate the story between Godzilla, Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra enough to forgive it and it's my favorite of the Monsterverse. I don't have as much problem seeing the monsters through the weather effects as some people seem to, the only one I really can't follow is when Godzilla drags Ghidorah into the Gulf of Mexico. It does cut to the humans too much during the monster fights, but it's also trying to connect the stories. The goal of the human characters lines up with Godzilla's well enough that they can be considered to be on the same side, and that's why we see things like Godzilla charge Ghidorah, then cut away to humans where Ghidorah's heads slam into the earth somewhere in the background. It's fairly flawed, but...
Godzilla vs Kong: Holy shit over-correction much? I think it might actually work better as a stand alone movie than a continuation of King of the Monsters, yet it actually can't because of some elements like the Ghidorah heads. Notice how they say one skull holds the pilot, there's another skull in Mecha Godzilla? - clearly supposed to be the side heads incinerated by Burning Godzilla not the one Godzilla tore off in the Gulf of Mexico – not sure why everyone misses that. ANYWAY, it's a fun movie that gets to the main event as fast as it feels like it can and the monster action is solid. With the one exception that I really hate Godzilla being portrayed as defenseless against Mecha Godzilla – outmatched and needing help is fine, but utterly unable to do anything but get stomped is just not enjoyable to me. As soon as Kong comes to help double team Mecha G it gets a lot better though. - Quick note, why did “Team Kong” see any reason to sic Kong on Mecha G? We the audience know that since the robot is possessed by Ghidorah that once it kills Godzilla it'll go on to wipe out all humanity and anything else it comes across, but does “Team Kong” know it? If Kong knows it, would he care beyond Jia? I mean, it doesn't matter but it does nag me a little bit.
I honestly thing the basic story teased at the end of King of the Monsters in the news reel stuff sounds like a better movie than Godzilla vs Kong turned out to be but I'm fine with what we got for the most part. Except why did they dump all the other monsters? They've come up with all these interesting new monsters and they have Rodan and what-not and they just say they all haven't been seen? It's the most disappointing part of the Monsterverse so far if you ask me.

Return of the King (King Kong vs. Godzilla, 1962)
It’s difficult to overstate the impact of King Kong vs. Godzilla, the third movie in what was to become the Godzilla series and the first to be shot in color, yet a movie that has also been almost completely overshadowed by everything that came after. Produced to coincide with Toho’s 30th anniversary, King Kong vs. Godzilla was the most ambitious kaiju movie to date, a landmark production involving two of the most famous movie monsters put on screen. To try and give a modern day comparison, this was the equivalent of the first Avengers movie or Avatar (remember Avatar??)
That said, something tells me if you’re out looking for a Godzilla movie from this era, you’d pop in vs. Mothra or Mechagodzilla or one of the other more popular entries. The fact that until 2019, the only legal version that most of us in the west could get our hands on was the inferior English cut due to a licensing agreement between RKO (the original owners of King Kong) and Toho didn’t exactly help either.
But really it goes deeper than that. King Kong vs. Godzilla is a downright weird movie no matter which version you watch. And I’ve seen both of them, the Japanese cut a few times and the American version exactly once last night, since it came with my Criterion Blu Ray set. More importantly, that set came with a decent restoration of the notoriously shitty-looking Japanese cut, and represents the first time that version was ever legally available stateside, so that’s nice!
The Japanese cut was put together by the usual crew, with Ishiro Honda directing, Eiji Tsuburaya on effects, Akira Ifukube on soundtrack duties, and Tomoyuki Tanaka producing. The writer is again Shinichi Sekizawa, though from what I’ve read, the sheer wackiness of the plot has more to do with Honda and Tsuburaya than it does Sekizawa, though I highly doubt he wasn’t an unwilling partner in all this.
The main plot (of the Japanese cut at least) is that the constantly riled up Mr. Tako (Ichiro Arihima) is tired of the TV shows his pharmaceutical company produces bombing in the ratings, so when he hears of the news that a giant monster has been sighted in the south pacific, he sends two of the salarymen in his employ off on an adventure to bring the monster to Japan so they can make a TV show about it.
This plot, frankly, is fucking ridiculous. Even knowing what comes later in Godzilla’s career, it’s really difficult to take the first half of this movie seriously, and even when the second half introduces some tension, it barely ever lasts, usually foiled by the monsters mugging and clapping, or the antics of Mr. Tako and his two cohorts.
This was, in part, Honda’s idea. He had apparently been disgusted with the “ratings wars” numerous TV producers were engaged in at the time, and took that idea to its logical extreme by making a TV producer start a literal monster war.
And go to war they certainly do. Sakurai and Fujita, Mr. Tako’s subordinates, bring Kong back from the island just in time for Godzilla to pop out of the arctic fresh from his seven year nap after Godzilla Raids Again, and after some general dicking around they go at it for the first of two times, and the results are... interesting. Tsuburaya apparently wanted to take the monster action in a lighter, more family-friendly direction, a move which Honda was very much opposed to. The result is the inception of the boulder-flinging (get used to it) and a lot of mugging and general wackiness that couldn’t be more different from the animal savagery in Raids Again. Harou Nakajima and Shoichi Hirose, who played Godzilla and Kong respectively, apparently did their own choreography, and took a lot of their inspiration from pro wrestling.
It’s here that I’ll bring up the effects which, sufficed to say, are a disappointment. While the few city sets that the film shows look good, Kong sure as hell does not. With a dopey, blinking face and ratty fur, Kong looks like an old rug somebody forgot to throw out. Godzilla fares quite a bit better in his first color appearance, with a mean, angular face and great proportions. The matte work used to put the human characters in the same scenes as the monsters is downright repugnant, and has been done better in earlier movies. I’m inclined to think it was just that Tsuburaya’s team bit off more than they could chew, but it’s still hard to look at the effects of a movie this big and see literal green screen outlines around the main cast.
That said, the movie is still a fun watch, if only to try and make sense of it all. Kong miraculously gains the ability to eat lightning, (a relic from when the movie was planned to be a Frankenstein vehicle, let’s not get into it) Akihiko Hirata has a small role as a doctor, and this also is the first movie to use Ifukube’s famous Godzilla theme.
Tumblr media
Almost none of these praises can be sung of the American version, which is a dreadful and boring disaster of a movie that seems to have had a singular objective of making as little sense as possible.
The team producing the English dub did have their work cut out for them, if I can say this one thing in their defense. The plot they had to work with of a deranged TV producer sending his underlings out to bring back a monster in order to boost ratings was so distinctly Japanese that, instead of trying to work with it, they just threw it out entirely.
Well, they threw out as much as they could. Sakurai and Fujita’s expedition to Faro Island and their retrieval of Kong takes up a significant portion of the film’s first act, to the point that they’re so integral to the plot that you really can‘t remove them and then explain where the hell Kong even came from.
The English cut solves this problem by trimming their appearances down to the sheerest atoms of footage they could, resulting in a movie that has no real protagonist or focal point at all. While Mr. Tako and his dynamic duo were hardly great protagonists, they at least have some claim to the title. Characters from the Japanese cut whizz by with the slightest possible introductions when they get one at all, leading the viewer to not understand what the hell they’re doing their in the first place.
In place of the original plot, we get a pair of talking head newscasters and a doctor who reads dinosaur facts out of a big picture book. I would have been alright with the removal of the original plot if what they’d replaced it with was worth something, but this just isn’t. The general plan was to present the movie as if it was being told through a newscast, meaning that many of the new actors stare unnervingly into the camera while reading their lines, which are often presented with the complete absence of emotion, befitting the detached newscaster aesthetic. Not to mention there’s something really disappointing about seeing shots that were simply part of the movie in the Japanese cut shrunk down to the size of a TV screen in the English version just to service this frame story that’s not worth shifting focus to.
To give them credit, this strategy worked for the American edit of the original Godzilla, a movie I decided not to cover due to the fact that it’s generally fine at what it does in that it tells the story through an American narrator but generally leaves the plot alone. Not so here, where the bizarre first half is replaced by something equal parts confusing and dull, with stock Universal monster music replacing Ifukube’s score to boot. They did at least dub over the American submarine crew who become Godzilla food, who sound like they’re reading their lines at gunpoint in the Japanese cut.
I don’t hate this movie, though it may seem like I do. King Kong vs. Godzilla is more of a mixed bag than anything else, a film that’s remembered more for what it started than what it is. Pretty much every Godzilla sequel we’re in for follows the whimsical template that started here, and whether that’s good or not is totally your call. But we did get Godzilla’s infamous dropkick out of the deal, so it isn’t all bad. Watch the Japanese version while you wait for Godzilla vs. Kong to come out, but stay far away from the English cut.

Alright so since I’m waiting for kong vs Godzilla I’ve been rereading some of my books and one of them was guardians of ga’hoole (it’s a book about owls) and I just recently learn that they did my girl Otulissa dirty in the movie
In the books Otulissa is a spotted owl who Soren and the band hates because she was a know it all (she like a owl Hermione) but they soon grow to like her as a friend
In the movies they changed her into a short ear owl to make her more pretty... what were they thinking! Look at this! A spotted owl is pretty!
Tumblr media
And they made her into a love interest for the main character... why... why do they do you dirty Otulissa... you shouldn’t have to be bring down into a love interest.... you told dewlap to sprink your spronk!
I love the movie but they did her dirty

now for my highlights below in my ramblings (SPOILERS BELOW):
What I think was the perfect amount of human to monster screen time for a Godzilla movie (fuck the critics with the ‘too much godzilla not enough humans’ because A) that’s what we came here for and B) LAST TIME YOU SAID ‘NOT ENOUGH GODZILLA TOO MUCH HUMANS’ MAKE UP YOUR MINDS PEOPLE)
what human characters were there didn’t feel at all boring or like they were dragging the film down (I actually like all of them I can’t think of one I disliked tbh)
My favs are of course Serizawa, Jonah and Dad Russel (also Dr Chen and the nervous energy Sam Coleman) of the humans.
I love all these human scientists and their back and forth, glad they got the main man Serizawa back from 2014

Brain: Hey, cant-blink, how ya doing?
Me: Oh, you know, just driving along for my job, thinking about the next chapter of my Weakness fic.
Brain: Neat. Well, I’m just dropping in to say, y’know how you’re totally fangirling over Ghidorah?
Me: Yeah?
Brain: And you know how you’ve been doing all this head-canon stuff with them? Giving them backstory, character development, and meaningful relationships with each other, and although you keep them as evil as they are in the movie, you totally formed a deep emotional bond towards them?
Me: Uh huh...?
Brain: And you know those other people that make Ghidorah stuffs? Portrayals that you’re also attached to? Like ckret’s amazing Rodorah series? And ridic’s awesome drawings? And that Ghidorah ask blog? Just to name a few.
Me: ........... Where is this going-
Brain: I’m just reminding you that they’re dead in the movie. Dead. Destroyed. Obliterated. All that emotional stuff you’ve been doing? All the fanwork? Doesn’t change the fact they’re dead in the movie. In fact, when you see Ghidorah die from now on, you will see your own portrayal of them dying. You see ckret’s and ridic’s and ghidorah-ghidorah-and-me’s portrayal of them dying. Remember that look Ichi had on his face when he saw San disintegrate in front of him? Can you imagine if Ni’s last words was him finally declaring Ichi and San as his brothers?
Me: ...........
Brain: And San’s head in the end probably won’t mean anything since the series will probably end at Godzilla Vs. Kong. Even if it continues, still no guarantee Ghidorah’s coming back. San looks pretty dead there, didn’t he? Totally sucks, dun it?
Me: ..........
Brain: Alright, just wanted to say that. Nice talk, I’ll drop by later to check how that story’s doing.
Me: Brain, y u do dis to meh? ;~;
Brain: Because your tears are delicious. Now go share this on Tumblr so others can suffer with you.
My brain is mean to me.....

Child's Play 2019
Just saying as a heads up to a part I talk about in this. I was surprised to hear my friend one of her brothers is a Chucky fan....to be honest I told her it's his loss that he didn't wanna see it which is her brother. But I'm seriously wondering of what kind of audiences Chucky has. Or it's also the return of slashers basically.
Well I've seen it, and the reason I didn't make this immediately because I found my friend at the mall, she donated plasma, she wasn't feeling well. So I called Uber to take us to a friend's house. Now her and him along with a friend of his are in the pool while I'm writing this.
Yeah I saw you and she said it was out of the blue. I saw her after the movie.
I'll just get back to this. I know of Child's Play and I know the Chucky character and the whole thing with Charles Lee Ray. I haven't seen any Child's Play movies but I've seen reviews and whatever else. This was basically my first time watching a full Child's Play movie.
So I'll just say it I liked it. It was an enjoyable remake. In fact when I was starting to leave. I was thinking to myself this is honestly one of the best remakes/reboots of some of the famous slasher characters.
I've enjoyed the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, and the 2009 Friday The 13th reboot. This is one of them. But I feel my opinion may not count because I haven't seen the original but I know how it goes.
But let me tell you this, I wasn't actually really afraid of the film. Basically it didn't necessarily terrify me despite some stupid jump scares. Despite some build up but I'm trying make sense of it. It didn't scare me like I hoped it would.
In fact it was weirdly more fun than terrifying. That's weird to say huh.
But yeah this will have no spoilers in this. Despite I wasn't really scared. I feel maybe it's because my exposure to other slashers. Yet I'm not trying to diss on the film, again it's good.
Yet about the fun part I tweeted out about some kids were there. Including I saw another one and maybe a teenager and just whatever else. While I did hear a cry and two I'm trying to recall. My theater experience was still very good.
In fact I kept thinking about just 3C Films videos on this movie that Child's Play has a certain audience. I don't know it was unexpectedly to see this kind of audience for this movie. Again my experience was good.
Back to the movie. I honestly liked the cast. Some of my favorites being Audrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry. They were nice to watch. Including Gabriel Bateman did wonderful, hopefully to see him in more roles. Everyone else did alright.
Including I was surprised to see that Brian is also gonna be in Godzilla Vs Kong. I'm excited to see him in that. Along with it was nice seeing Audrey gagged up. ;) If you know what I mean, I'm being weird.
Now Mark Hamill as Chucky. I know Brad Dourif is iconic as Chucky from what I've seen. But Mark Hamill does a pretty nice job. While this time instead of being a serial killer possessing a doll. It's a AI doll, Mark Hamill makes it his own. Which is always a good thing just make the role your own. In fact throughout the film and I wanna talk about this Chucky gets more brutal. While yeah there are some funny moments which the audience liked.
In fact there is a build up to that serial killer AI aspect. It's alright and it pays off.
Now let me get to this part I wanna talk about. The kills oh my if you like slashers. Let me tell you the kills do not disappoint and Chucky gets brutal.
Seriously some of the kills are literally nasty. No wonder this commerical where it's this review thing critics calling it gnarly, and twisted. Because it is and I feel the writers honestly wanted that and it works. Especially for a film like this.
Also let me talk about the score from Bear McCreary this man is awesome. He did the score for Godzilla KOTM 2019, and he does an excellent job on the score for this film. Especially the main theme and he even remade the original theme and it's great.
Including yeah I stuck when the Buddi song hit but I left when the long credits started rolling.
I just wanna get this review or reaction done. Again I enjoyed it, in fact what I appreciate about this remake is that thd people behind it tried to make it more than a remake. Especially they tried to make the film it's own thing or something. I appreciate more remakes/reboots on classic horror films mainly slashers go this route.
Basically the idea and I'm not trying to sound like a jerk. But they had the right people behind it and I think I should say they gave a damn. Along with they understood what they were dealing with.
Including I hope Blumhouse's Black Christmas remake delivers as well. Along with whenever that 2nd Elm Street reboot happens, and another Friday The 13th reboot happens if the lawsuit ever ends. I still miss Jason. It's great Chucky is getting this stuff along with a tv show soon.
If you like slashers and you were worried, don't worry I recommend it. But you make your own opinion when you see it.

Godzilla King of the Monsters thoughts (SPOILERS)
Sorry for the disorganized lol, just writing this down as my Immediate thoughts.
The movie as a whole is actually pretty enjoyable. Obviously there are some rough parts, but given that nobody will ever really be satisfied, that’s fine. The monster action is definitely a highlight, as is Ghidorah for me, personally. Honestly, this is one of my favorite incarnations of him, and he is treated very well and built as a very intimidating threat. The regeneration ability is disgustingly cool and really shows off his extraterrestrial origins.
Mothra could have done a little bit more, but it was still nice to have her around for what time she could have been. The twin reference was really nice, as was hearing her theme once again. Also the fact that she actually managed to win a fight (almost) without dying was nice.
Rodan being reduced to just kind of Ghidorah’s lackey was a little disappointing, but he does come across as a pretty cool threat. I do really wish we could have gotten a 3 vs 1 fight against Ghidorah, but Rodan surviving was a nice touch.
The movie REALLY liked to just kill everyone off. Serizawa was fairly expected, but Graham’s death sorta felt… random? It gave me some Mako vibes, unfortunately. Also Emma’s sacrifice seemed a little extra on top of Serizawa, but the fact of what she did really wasn’t going to let her come out unscathed. The characters were fairly alright. It was a bit of a nice change of pace from the 2014 and their mostly uninteresting cast, but it does feel a little crowded. Alan Jonah is okay as a villain, but he doesn’t really feel all that memorable, hopefully he shows up in Godzilla vs Kong to flesh him out more. Him having possession of Titan DNA gave me flashbacks to Tokyo SOS.
Seeing that San Francisco was just abandoned was actually a nice bit of world-building, a change of pace from seeing Tokyo destroyed and immediately rebuilt in the other films. The whole prospect of Titans bringing life to where they roam was pretty cool, and I’ll admit I got a minor thought of Biollante as a possibility down the line.
The other Titans have fairly cool designs, and it was cool to see a MUTO in the crowd at the end too. The Behemoth (I think that was the mammoth?) was actually a pretty dope design in its simplicity. Seeing how the people coexist with them as akin to natural disasters in the credits was pretty cool.
Also, Skull Island in the process to become Monster Island? That’s pretty dope. I am still wondering what the Ghidorah head post-credit scene leads to. Given that it was affected by the Oxygen Destroyer, I’m leaning into some sort of mishmash version of Destroyah or hopefully an original creation. Even though its 100% Bagan, without a shadow of a doubt.

Live Blogging “King Kong” (1933)
Tumblr media
05:00 Why is there so much music?? I feel like this was their thing before Maria Menounos
10:00 Wow I wish a pimp would give me a job that easily 15:35 HUNNGHHH WOMEN ARE SO CONFUSING CAN’T HAVE THOSE ON BOARD MY MAN SHIP 30:10 wow look at all of those DANGEROUS and SAVAGE little HEATHENS! If only the natives were white, maybe they would understand our inherent need to colonize! 38:22 “You aren’t a female you’re a pretty blonde lady those aren’t the same” also another emphasis of “women are scary they make me FEEL THINGS” 41:01 “crazy black man on board!” w o w. Just. Wow. 41:28 The natives who wanted to BUY our female have been on the ship! And the female is missing! Where could she possibly BE?? THIS IS SO CONFUSING I SURE DO WONDER WHERE SHE IS 42:05 “me go too!” Alright listen just because he’s chinese doesn’t mean he can’t learn basic english wtf 44:41 That’s a pretty advanced tourniquet system they have on those sacrificial pillars not gonna lie 47:02 ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THESE SPECIAL EFFECTS RIGHT NOW OH MY GOD. EVERYTHING IS SO MUCH BETTER. OH MY GOD.
Tumblr media
47:59 Why does the gorilla know how to untie a tourniquet lol
50:19 “Listen to those birds...” Denham you crazy motherfucker an actress is MISSING 50:49 Is that a fucking dinosaur 51:51 NOOOO he’s just a herbivore!!! 52:54 “Say! Just look at the length of that brute!” Am I allowed to make a dick joke? I’m gonna make a dick joke. 53:14 “If only I could bring one of these back alive...” well maybe if you hadn’t SHOT HIM 55:41 why do they keep shooting the herbivores?! @whoever directed this film a brontosaurus would never eat sailors and that is definitely a brontosaurus. 57:53 Let me just climb up a tree to escape this creature with the unusually long neck- that seems like a good plan 59:21 All of the outright misogyny aside, it comforts me that these twenty sailors were willing to infiltrate jurassic park to save their lady friend or w/e 1:01:24 and somehow the love interest survives? Lol 1:02:15 King Kong vs Godzilla (1962) That’s it Kong go for the legs!!! 1:04:33 I wonder what this movie was rated in 1933? Or did movie ratings not exist then? Gonna look that up later. Also in my head I’ve created about 36 reactions memes using this gorilla’s facial expressions alone 1:07:13 I think the directors had a fetish for killing dinosaurs. 1:09:03 wait so does this mean that Denham was psychic? He literally predicted that this would play out like Beauty and the Beast. Also why does Kong have a thing for white women? And why is Ann basically the world’s best security system? 1:12:23 The rest of the movie is just Kong trying to find a safe spot for his very Loud new thing 1:13:57 Kong, basically: “Lol tiddies” 1:15:04 LOL why is every dinosaur on this island somehow aware of Ann’s presence?? And the UPPER BODY STRENGTH jack would have to have in order to carry her down that vine is ridiculous. Why was that his plan? Oh well I guess it worked. 1:19:41 Here’s an idea: we feed the white men to Kong. 1:23:54 King Kong dying lookin like some romeo romeo type shit 1:27:00 well that was quite a time jump 1:28:57 “The bravest woman I have ever known” my ASS all she did was scream 1:30:52 lmao well now you’ve done it 1:33:17 Y E E T 1:36:04 Nobody: Kong: is that a f uc ki n g train 1:38:04 How is Ann not concussed 30 ways to hell by now 1:42:30 Girl I would not be struggling to escape when you’re that far off the ground Summary: well other than the BLATANT racism and misogyny, the story itself had a good basis. I would definitely be interested in seeing the remakes. Considering the technology of the time I won’t take off points for fake-ness. 7/10.
