Grimwalkers are thought to be an attempt at resurrection. A flawed attempt, as the resulting creation would lack the memories of the original, only having their base personality. The process is thought to violate the soul of the deceased, and thus considered an act of dark magic, shunned by most. The knowledge would be best left forgotten.

Hunter knew all this, because he was such a creature. He attempted to research more about his nature, but only one such book, found in hexsides library’s restricted section, contained the details on the process.

The ritual for creating a grimwalker was a morbid one. First, the body of the one intended to be brought back must but grafted into an object called a goreflower, with the center filled with abomination goo. A baby like figure is crafted with palistrom, and a soul gem embedded into its heart. The figure is then placed within the center.

Then comes the cruelest part. Thirteen witches much be sacrificed to the gore flower. The sacrifices are painfully transformed into flowers. Their magic being drained into the , which closes its petals, later opening to revel the completed grimwalker. The grimwalker will begin to rapidly age until they’re about five years old physically. After that…well, hunter.

Thirteen. Thirteen people had to die just for hunter to exist. That’s on top of all his predecessors, and all the people sacrificed to bring them to life and…oh Titan, his very existence was just one big massacre, wasn’t it? Not to mention, belos probably got the inspiration for the draining spell from the grimwalker ritual. Hunter shuddered, knowing that he could very well be indirectly responsible for the day of unity…

While in the human realm, he read a book called Frankenstein. It was about a human scientist who created an artificial human, only to be horrified by his creation and abandoned it. Hunter asked himself, why couldn’t that have been him? Why couldn’t his uncle been horrified by his creation and put him out of his misery?

“Hunter, are you okay?” Said willow, her voice cutting through him like butter. “Yeah I’m…” hunter said, before crying, being unable to hold back his tears. Willow hugged him. Her warm presence made him feel..somewhat comfortable.

“Dios omnipotente, have they been under feeding you?” Said Luz’s mom, noticing his gaunt cheeks.”I’ll cook something up for all of you.” As she left, Luz sat down next to him on the kitchen chair. The scar belos gave her was still fresh. “Something the matter?” She asked. “My name.” He replied.”hunter.witch hunter. It’s my function.” Hunter looked ready to sob again. Luz putt her hand to his chin and shushed him. “I don’t see it that way.” Hunter gave her a confused look. “When I hear hunter, I don’t think of…that. I think of you.” “What about your name, Luz?” “It means light.”

Light. Hunter thought that was appropriate. When he first met her, she was full of light, always willing to help, even for something like him. But now, something’s changed. That light faded. She’s more embittered now. Probably because of she had to get involved with him. Figures. As much as hunter wants to act like everything’s gonna be okay, he can’t. Not will the whole of the boiling isle is a the mercy of a mad good. Darius, raine, the owl lady, emo chick, not to mention luz’s brother… he didn’t want to think about what’s happening over there. Luz had a hard time holding onto hope.

And if Luz can’t find the light, what chance does he have?
