I love Astrid in gotnf so fucking much it's insane.

Like, fueled by some kind of manic behavior caused by Stormfly's absence, she fixated on making 'new holiday traditions' to distract herself from the fact her best friend is gone help the village, and basically got the pre-httyd1 Hiccup treatment.

She just wanted to help, and instead accidentally set the village on fire and blew up houses, got mocked by Snotlout and the twins, and was (probably for one of the first times ever in her life) looked at with nothing but disappointment from the adults.

(Only difference is she was actually trusted to clean up the mess she made whereas Hiccup was not due to fear of him accidentally breaking something even more)

While she was fixing the roofs she was probably thinking to herself 'I just wanted to help, but all I did was make things worse.' And I wonder if she realized this must be exactly how Hiccup felt for years.

ok but i will NEVER be over the look on Hiccup’s face when he slowly realises that the reason Toothless destroyed his new tail and pulled out his old saddle is because he only wants to fly if it’s with Hiccup, together, instead of on his own

like Hiccup almost always has a dry, sarcastic remark or comeback for pretty much everything, but in this moment he was completely speechless because he was so overwhelmed and awestruck at the affection from his dragon

Humanizing Dragons and Dog-izing Toothless

Been a while since I've posted HTTYD analyses, so thought I'd pull a clip from last night's stream where we went in depth talking Dragons!

Concepts more or less in clip:

Fandom dumbing down dragons to the point of hapless pets versus treating dragons the same psychologically as humans

The middle ground - treating dragons as a separate species, highly intelligent animals

HTTYD franchise depicting dragons from a naturalistic perspective

Toothless's mannerisms being a combination of creatures in the first film - cat, rabbit, horse, dog, etc. but the balance of those traits shifting to dog-like prominence by HTTYD 2

Shifting Toothless's traits after already being an established character is a disservice to the character we fell in love with

Toothless in the HTTYD 1 era - including small humanizing moments in GOTNF and why everything felt congruent

Toothless increasingly being treated as a cute gimmick for audience appeal instead of as an independent character
