I admit it....when it comes to "ornamentals" i tend to look back to ancients. But what's an ornamental? Just a super narrowed down varietal of an ancient. In this case, Lantana camara...i always had an eye for you ..i just have a hard time with landscaping go to's. Please forgive me.....you are Brilliant! Found on a dang good portion of tidy sub/urban yards nationwide, im feeling this flower isn't new to you either....she's pretty loud and rightfully so. Who knew, right?...she's only up in your face everywhere...lets start paying attention to plants that catch you-meaningful. So here's the herbal download.... Lantana camara is some potent medicine...tackling heavy business like fungal, nematode and microbial infections. These are Blue Bachelor's Buttons or Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus). Named for the centaur, Chiron, who was believed to have taught mankind of the healing power of herbs and the Goddess Cyanus (Flora) who's favorite flower was the cornflower. In the Genus Lonicera (Honeysuckle) and the "specific epithet", this is Lonicera sempervirens. Some Herbalists call this the Latin name but it's not. Or the "scientific name", but it's not. Truth is, this Bi.nomalclature can be quite helpful when these names are memorized, giving clues, but largely it just gives props to men who had nothing to go with anything. Familiar? This particular, surprisingly welcome and joyful find in the forest yesterday, left me breathless... This un shopped photo shows how outstanding the 5 fused petals are in brilliant pinks-magenta-reds, must often with a bright yellow induced color of the long tubular flower. 1 stigma & 5 stamens shining a brilliant bright white against that flower color literally causes it to stand out in the forest. 36 moths and butterflies are on recotd as being officially dependant on this plants nectar in the mid Atlantic states as they migrate. Meet my long time trusted plant spirit friend, Oregon Grape/Barberry (Mahonia aquiflora). Most folks use the root but the limb bark shavings are just as potent and are murder free!
