Variety will present Tom Hiddleston with the Variety Virtuoso Award at the Miami Film Festival on Tuesday, April 9. The award will be for his career achievements across film, theater and television.
“From screens large and small to the Broadway stage, Tom Hiddleston is one of our most versatile and engaging actors,” said Jenelle Riley, Variety Focus Awards and Features Editor. “With Season 2 of ‘Loki,’ he brought a Shakespearean arc to a fan-favorite character, making us laugh and cry — sometimes simultaneously. No one that talented should also be that nice. Or that tall.”
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be honoring actor Tom Hiddleston at the 41st edition of Miami Film Festival. Not only has he worked with incredible directors such as Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro, but his phenomenal work from the stage to the screen has made a lasting impact on fans around the world,” said Lauren Cohen, Miami Film Festival Director of Programming. “His illustrious career and starring role in such an incredible franchise is something we could not be more delighted to honor. We’re so excited to be partnering with Variety to honor the talent and remarkable career of Tom Hiddleston.”
The festival will open with “Thelma,” directed by Josh Margolin and starring June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, and Parker Posey with director Josh Margolin and producer Zoë Worth in attendance. The Festival will close with “Ezra,” directed by Tony Goldwyn, who will be in attendance on Saturday, April 13, and will receive the Art of Light Award for directing. Alison Brie will also receive the Art of Light Award, and “Sing Sing” director Greg Kwedar will be honored with the Impact Award.
Hiddleston will join previously announced honoree Molly Ringwald (Variety Creative Vanguard Award) in the lineup. The festival will present three Marquee screenings for the films “Dear Jassi,” “Sing Sing” and “The Performance,” along with a centerpiece screening of “The Idea of You.” The 2024 Miami Film Festival will celebrate more than 180 feature narratives, documentaries, and short films of all genres, from over 31 countries worldwide, featuring 10 World premieres, 10 North American premieres, five U.S. premieres, and 11 east coast premieres, and 42 Florida premieres. This is pretty impressive honour to be awarded this by TIFF. Could really be a dark horse in the best actor race ( so far the front runners being cillian and leo) also thankfully being from toronto, I got (free) tickets to see rustin at TIFF.

Okay Colman! Way to go! 👏🏾
Okay, now I KNOW I must watch this.
That's awesome! 😊
Are the Academy Awards still accepting films from streaming services in the race? Cuz I could have sworn that I read somewhere that after this past year, they aren't going to be doing that anymore. But someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Or, I should rephrase that... I think the terms are the film HAS to be released in theaters for at least a certain amount of time in order to be considered. But someone let me know if I misunderstood.

Sing Sing at SXSW: Inside "Sing Sing" with the Cast and Director
Tumblr media
The 2024 SXSW Film Festival brought powerful stories to light, and one that truly resonated was "Sing Sing." This film delves into the real-life rehabilitation program "Rehabilitation Through the Arts" at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. This powerful film had everyone buzzing, and I snagged exclusive interviews with the cast and director on the red carpet. Here's a glimpse into their inspiring journeys with the film: Colman Domingo: Update On How His Experiences Have Changed Him https://youtu.be/jygWnoIqPZk Colman Domingo, known for his captivating performances in shows like Euphoria, plays a crucial role in the movie - the prison counselor leading the transformative theater program. Our conversation revolved around the film's ability to challenge perceptions. Domingo spoke passionately about how the movie humanizes those often demonized within the prison system. He also highlighted the dedication of the formerly incarcerated cast members, whose real-life experiences added immense depth to the film. Director's Vision: Why This Story Needed To Be Told https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykr2cvUYfJs The mastermind behind "Sing Sing" is Greg Kwedar, whose vision brought this powerful story to life. In our interview, he discussed the challenges and rewards of filming within a real prison environment. He also shared the film's core message of hope and the transformative power of artistic expression. Greg Kwedar's passion for the project and unwavering belief in the program's impact were truly inspiring. Cast Reflections: From Redemption to Inspiration https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lG9oZfK3u8 The movie wouldn't be complete without the phenomenal performances of the cast, many of whom were formerly incarcerated men who participated in the real-life program. The raw emotions and genuine experiences these cast members brought to the film were truly unforgettable. A Story of Hope Beyond the Walls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju1cuijVIuo The entire team radiated a powerful sense of purpose and unwavering belief in the film's message. The movie is more than just entertainment; it's a testament to the power of second chances and the transformative potential of art. I highly recommend checking out this film when it hits theaters! JOCKEY (2021)
Starring Clifton Collins Jr., Molly Parker, Moises Arias, Logan Cormier, Colleen Hartnett, Daniel Adams, Vincent Francia, Marlon St. Julien, Danny Garcia, Ryan Barber, Martin Bourdieu, Aki Kato, Richard Lull, Scott Stevens, Carl 'The Truth' Williams       , Michael Ybarra, Joe Johnson, Daillon Luker,          Oscar Quiroz, John Shumaker, Willie Whitehouse, Stacey Nottingham, Bryce Donaldson and Colleen Hartnett.
Screenplay by Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar.
Directed by Clint Bentley.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. 95 minutes. Rated R.
There is a certain amount of cosmic synergy in the fact that long-time character actor Clifton Collins Jr. may finally reach some level of stardom for playing the lead character in the melancholy drama Jockey.
After all, his character, Jackson Silva is an aging journeyman horseman who has been on the circuit for years. He’s reached some minor levels of success and occasional high points in his career, but mostly he’s had to scramble for a buck and to survive. Now, finally, the potential of a huge win is within his grasp, if only he can hang on to it and perform to the best of his abilities. Unfortunately, his body, which he has been neglecting for years, is starting to break down.
With the exception of the deteriorating body (I assume), it is pretty much a parallel story to Collins’ own acting career. He’s had occasional high points – playing killer Perry Smith in Capote and appearing in such acclaimed films as Babel and Sunshine Cleaning and having a substantial role on the HBO series Westworld. However, he’s rarely had the opportunity to carry a film, and in recent years he’s worked steadily, but mostly in small roles in barely noticed films. (Other than Jockey, his 2021 output included After Yang, Breaking News in Yuba County and a bit part in the critically acclaimed Nightmare Alley.)
And now he has the opportunity for that big winner which has eluded him for so long.
On the plus side, Jockey is a triumph for him, the type of lived-experience performance which will make award nomination committees stand up and take notice. (He’s got almost no shot to win Best Actor, but I’d be shocked if he isn’t at least nominated.) On the negative, Jockey is a bit too morose and cynical to become anything other than a cult arthouse favorite. Which is fine, it was never expected to be anything else, I imagine.
Plus, it is a film about the sport of horse racing in which barely any actual racing is shown. And yet, it exudes a bittersweet elegiac quality which is surprisingly effective.
Jockey tells the story of an older man who is nearly at the end of his career ride, and yet he wants to stay in the saddle a bit longer. At the very moment that he is handed what may very well be his last chance for the gold ring, a young man enters his life. Gabriel (Moises Arias) is a groom and aspiring jockey – and he may just be Jackson’s son from a long-ago relationship. Jackson must decide whether to take the youngster under his wing or to save him from the life which has been so hard and often disappointing – and yet addictive to Jackson – before he is also pulled down the rabbit hole.
Jockey does not sugarcoat the world of horseracing. It shows it as a physically and emotionally taxing lifestyle in which the few victories are mitigated by a constant barrage of defeats. It is a dirty, sordid way of life which breaks more people than it creates. Yet it is fascinating for the hold it has on them.
Jockey is visually poetic – it almost feels like a long-lost Terrence Mallick film – at the same time it is often emotionally devastating. And riding on Collins’ hard-earned performance, it deserves its time in the winner’s circle.

Bart Chat 2/1/2021
Hello all,
I‘ve been working on a unique project called Firebones, which will be coming out in mid-February. As we get closer to the launch date, I will tell you more, but in the meantime, here is a trailer for the series.
We are beginning work on DocuFest for fall, which we hope to hold live and in-person and a celebration of gathering together. It will be joyous.
Cinematic Conversations
This week we will be having a lively discussion about MANK, which you can see on Netflix.  If you have time, I might recommend you can watch Citizen Kane before our Thursday night discussion (7:30 CST). You can find Kane on HBO MAX and TCM, and hey, it’s always good to watch Kane.  MANK has references to Upton Sinclair's race for the Governor of California. If someone would volunteer to do a bit of research on that to add to the discussion, that would be helpful. <extra credit="" or="" a="" video="" fest="" t-shirt=""></extra>
Our guest hosts this week (yes, we have 2) are:
Tom Schatz has taught film studies at UT Austin for 40 years and has written four books about Hollywood films and filmmaking. These include Hollywood Genres, now widely considered the standard academic text on that subject; The Genius of the System, a highly acclaimed book about the "studio system" during Hollywood's so-called classical era; and most recently Boom and Bust: American Cinema in the 1940's.
Joseph McBride teaches film at San Francisco State. He has written numerous books, including biographies of notable film directors, a book on screenwriting, an investigative journalism book on the JFK assassination, and a memoir of the dark years in his life. Most important for our discussion is the book Orson Welles: Actor and Director and What Ever Happened to Orson Welles?: A Portrait of an Independent Career
Last week Sam Pollard had an issue with his phone and missed our conversation, but he will indeed join us at the end of February.
What to watch this week:
The Sundance film festival continues for a few more days. You can see some films at The Texas Theater. Some are inside if you want to risk it (I will not), but there is one screening at their drive-in and an on-line panel.
Prime Time
Speaking of Sundance, one of the titles I’ve heard some buzz about is the Sparks Brothers documentary by Edgar Wright. That’s right, a  documentary! I remember Sparks Brothers from the On the Air video bar days with songs like “All You Ever Think About is Sex,” but I thought I would go back and see what I was missing and there are some good tracks there. What really caught my attention was a rock opera called The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman, which is worth a listen.
2/1/21 3:45 PM in the theater. In 1999 Sebastian locks himself in a TV studio. He has two hostages, a gun, and an important message for the world.
JOCKEY Online Discussion
2/2/21 6:00 PM Director Clint Bentley and writer/producer Greg Kwedar of US Narrative Competition selection Jockey (and previously the SXSW Audience Award winner Transpecos) sit down with Sailor Bear's Toby Halbrooks (A Ghost Story, Pete's Dragon) to talk about making independent work from the growing film community of North Texas. Jockey was the 2020 recipient of the AFS Grant Pioneer Film Fund Award, in partnership with Sailor Bear Entertainment and the Oak Cliff Film Festival. Moderated by Dallas International Film Festival Artistic Director, James Faust.
Marvelous and the Black Hole
2/2 8:30 Drive-in
A teenage delinquent (Miya Cech) teams up with a surly children’s party magician (Rhea Perlman) to navigate her dysfunctional family and inner demons.
Theatre and Dance Organizations
Arts groups around town have some very inspiring work for you to see, including
Undermain Theater, Soul Rep, Teatro Dallas, and Bruce Wood Dance Company. All of these are both great experiences and worthy of your support.
