'It looked to me like you had your own doubts. It still looks that way in fact.' - Keldeo, PMD GtI.
-WYA WARBLE (tm) INCOMING-
man, i wish Gates to Infinity had Special Episodes...the game's strongest point is its characters, and the whole point of SEs are to flesh out characters! like, c'mon. keldeo is one of the biggest offenders of this to me. he's on the cover, he gets talked about all game, but we only really get like, 4 scenes of him, and he's not even on screen for one of those. gimme a SE of his meeting with virizion, or one of their adventures, or his solo journey to the great glacier!
besides keldeo, there's munna's gang. what's their story? why are they like this? how did they find each other and how did munna earn their loyalty? how did they meet KYUREM? they surely didn't journey to the great glacier themselves...also, what happens to them after the end of the game? you'd think they'd join paradise or smth but they never show up again. what are they doing? why are all of their species found in the worldcore, is that just like, a fun thing the developers threw in, or is there a lore reason?
also, the partner. in psmd, you know everything about the partner's backstory, and while in rescue team and explorers you know less about them, you get the sense that they've probably just lived uneventful lives in town up till this point. in gates, they are specifically noted to be an orphan that had no loved ones until they met the player character. does the pmd world have an orphanage system? were they just ditched in a forest or smth? they made enough money to buy a plot of land from quagsire, but what were they doing to get that money? were they already exploring, rescuing, and taking in outlaws solo?
then, some other fun guys they could flesh out are the post towners, maybe folk like swanna, leavanny and herdier? ooh, or quagsire! i wanna know more about his time in the poke-mafia or whatever. or meloetta. he shows up in paradise out of nowhere to give you the blueprints to the jukebox, and i just. i just want to know more about her. like. i just want more lines of dialogue from him. what does she do. is the split personality just an innate thing that he's dealt with all his life? or they could tell an umbreon and espeon story, maybe how they met virizion? that way we could see more Edgy Virizion that we didn't get to see fully realised in base game. so many possibilities...!

finished Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeons' postgame arc so it's time to write down my thoughts on the game I guess!!
Overall opinion: Gameplay was pretty good, story made me feel.......eh.
Playing this after finishing Gates was both a good and bad thing.
okok I'll start with the positives. The improved balancing is welcome after GTI's mess, even if it is still difficult (Super seems to be the most difficult game in the series?). Even the maps have improved, and it's much less tedious to explore dungeons ✨ That being said, I felt/was underleveled throughout the whole thing. It reached the point that I used an infinite health cheat from Submerged Cave onward, because I just didn't have enough motivation to struggle through the endgame just to finish the main story.
The emera and looplet mechanic is fun though! idek if I would want them in future games, or be something unique to Super, but yeah I like the extra support it gives. The "limited number of steps to get them" was kind of like a tiny puzzle ✨ Wands, I'm feeling a bit mixed on since they feel redundant next to orbs, but they're alright.
Other misc. features:
Connection Orb! - I'll be real, I did not understand how this mechanic worked for most of the game. It feels like a roundabout way for recruiting and job requests. Conceptually, I think it's interesting, but in practice it feels clunky. Especially if you want to take on multiple jobs in the same dungeon.
Cafe Connection - I can't help but feel like it makes finishing jobs less personal, but I do get that it's to streamline getting the rewards.
The callbacks!!! - One of my favorite minor details about the game is the returning NPCs all the way from even Rescue Team!! Team ACT, the Persian from Felicity Bank, Makuhita Dojo, Whiscash, The Wigglytuff guild members, Future Trio (though I haven't done their quest yet), Team Charm, Armaldo, Swanna, Munna and co.,-- I could go on and on XD It's very sweet esp as a long time fan of this series. Makes me wonder how the protags of the previous games are doing too.
Now onto what is my main gripe. The story.
This is the part where playing GTI beforehand was actually detrimental to my opinion of Super lmao. To be honest, Super's story feels like the weakest of the series. It's not terrible, but like. it didn't have the same impact. Hell, I wasn't even in a rush to finish the post-game arc about getting your partner back.
I wouldn't be so ":/" about the plot if the ultimate boss, Dark Matter, wasn't the manifestation of all the negative feelings of all pokemon,
when we already went through fighting the Bittercold, which is very similar in concept.
It just,,,, after that it just felt like Super was trying to reuse the story ideas from GTI. And I can't even blame them, because I don't think that many people played through Gates bc of it's issues. But whenever someone says Super's plot is better than Gates I go "hngggggg >:I". The build up to the Bittercold was handled SO much better than Super with Dark Matter. I can write a whole post just about this topic in particular.
I will say though. Nuzleaf's betrayal was nice and gave me a reason to say "Dad sent us to hell :^(" while explaining which part of the plot I was at to my friend lmaooooo
The ending is........hm. Theoretically, the last plot twist should've destroyed me. But it didn't. I was a bit sad yeah, but my interest in the plot kinda dwindled at that point. The weight of it didn't really settle in until after you meet Mew in the post-game. The characterization for the Player poke is very nice 👌
Partner's revival was very kingdom hearts-esque also--not a judgement of quality, I just thought it was neat.
In summary: I am salty about this game's story. It's fun to play though.

some gates headcanons
(beep beep spoiler alert)
- umbreon and espeon are twins, with espeon being a few minutes older. she likes to remind umbreon about that from time to time. (ik the canon says otherwise, but my sister told me that they were siblings for some reason before i played the game and that’s how i’ve always seen them)
- when umbreon is talking about things that he’s really interested in (like entercards), he has a habit of rambling -- not as much as hydreigon, though. he tries his best not to, mostly because he’s worried that people will get bored and/or annoyed.
- after being stuck in the glacier palace, keldeo doesn’t like staying in one place for too long. sometimes, he’ll go on little adventures by himself for a few weeks -- occasionally, virizion will join him too.
- virizion’s favorite food is strawberries.
- swanna gives everyone in the paradise squad cooking lessons from time to time.
- dunsparce is actually really good at cooking -- his favorite food to make is sugar cookies.
- when hero gets back to the human world, the frism eventually ends up melting. hero goes on a journey to get partner another frism to make up for the one they lost.
- umbreon is a night owl and stays up really late (much later than he should, really) reading and doing other entercard research to pass the time.
- espeon, on the other hand, is an early riser -- she’s usually the first one out of the whole paradise squad to get up in the morning.
- hero can’t actually read or write in whatever language they use in the pokemon world -- they just agree with partner and hope for the best.

Gti swap idea: I could totally see some of the other more minor characters swapping. If only because S. I. R. Scrafty would be hilarious. On the other hand, Swanna being the one who was betrayed and refusing to get in contact with Gurdurr without payment is very juicy.
ohhh i never really considered that... that could have some really interesting potential...
if quagsire and scraggy swap then we get a move dojo where the wooper changes your moves and calls you a bitch
