Deciphering India’s Luna Crater

In the Kutch district of northwest India, a vast desert where salt is harvested in colorful rectangular ponds stretches to the Arabian Sea. In a neighboring grassland, a less conspicuous circular feature has attracted curiosity in recent decades. Scientists in India had suspected, but not confirmed, that an object from outer space made this mark on the landscape. Now, a geochemical analysis of the structure has revealed it contains the characteristic signatures of a meteorite impact.

Impact craters on our planet are a relative rarity; fewer than 200 structures from around the world are confirmed in the Earth Impact Database. The number of craters is so modest in part because many of the meteorites that survive the trip through Earth’s atmosphere ultimately splash down into water. Of the meteorites that do fall on land, evidence of their impact may be erased by forces such as wind, water, and plate tectonics.

The footprint of the newly studied Luna impact crater—named for its proximity to a village of the same name—is visible in this image, acquired by the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on the Landsat 8 satellite on February 24, 2024. The crater measures approximately 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) across, and its outer rim rises about 6 meters (20 feet) above the crater floor.

The Luna structure is situated in India’s Gujarat state in a grassland called the Banni Plains. The Great Rann of Kutch, an expansive white salt desert, lies just to the north. Parts of these low-lying areas are submerged for much of the year, and the Luna crater often contains water. Researchers took advantage of a dry period in May 2022 to collect samples from throughout the structure.

In the rocks and sediments, scientists detected several minerals that are uncommon in natural settings on Earth. These rare minerals form under the extremely high temperatures and pressures generated when a meteorite hits the ground. The researchers also measured anomalously high concentrations of the rare element iridium, consistent with findings at other impact craters.

Based on the radiocarbon dating of plant remnants contained in silt at the site, the team determined the impact occurred about 6,900 years ago. The crater is near the remains of an ancient Harappan settlement, but it is uncertain whether the impact predates the arrival of humans.

Impact craters appear through our solar system, and they can offer scientists a window into atmospheric processes and subsurface composition of planets and moons beyond our own. For example, a 2021 impact on Mars exposed a layer of water ice, which was imaged by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE camera) aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This was the closest to the Martian equator that buried water ice had ever been found—a significant discovery for potential crewed missions.

Scientists have also used data from NASA’s Cassini mission to look at the evolution of impact craters on Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Among other insights, they discerned the different ways that weather shapes Titan’s surface depending on the latitude.

things are feeling fever dreamish, like today and the weather and the flight and the whole month in india. just such a culture shift and so sudden and i also genuinely think that it was a waste of a month for me. stuck with my parents without any real freedom to do anything on my own. they got cellphone service there but me and my brother didn’t so basically we were glued to them. also if i had a sibling i actually had fun with maybe it would be a different story, or if i had friends there or cousins my age or anything like that. although my brother did seem kind of nicer and more tolerant of me while we were there so i can’t really complain about that.

but anyway it was basically just a whole bunch of going around and meeting relatives or people my parents know and staying with people either like 20+ years older than me or like 5+ years younger than me. and once or twice being with someone my age but even then i wasn’t close to them or anything. and eating out like every day. and just going along with whatever because it’s not like i had a choice anyway. for the first few days it was fine and fun, like being in kerala and in a nice hotel and whatever but like a third of the way into the trip when we were in gujarat i just started feeling apathetic and later i started feeling miserable about being there and wasting time. there were some fun moments and some new things i tried but a) lack of freedom makes everything shitty and b) i would rather have been here doing something that actually mattered at all, like sitting at home all day and watching movies or getting a job so i could actually not be broke when the spring semester rolled around.

also i didn’t even get much cool jewelry or other things like i was looking forward to, re: not having autonomy and also being dragged around everywhere. and i got some clothes but honestly nothing i feel very excited about. and the cherry on top is that i gained like 10 lbs rather than losing any weight at all. i feel very bitter about this but at the same time i feel really apathetic and numbed, or at least compelled to just pretend it never happened and move on with my life and start my semester. and i made myself promise myself that i would never go on another trip with my family like that again, because i know how easily i can forget things and then get myself into dumbfuck situations like that again. i’m so glad to be home but i feel super lazy now and i really don’t want to do anything at all, just like i should have been doing all fucking winter break.

and at this point i know i can’t seriously bring anything about my feelings up to my parents because it’s just gonna be met with dismissal or some kind of excuse or justification and that’s also probably why i can’t be assed to actively be bitter about this whole situation. but i know that bottling it up in a way is going to come back and bite me in the ass, or i’m going to just breakdown about it at some point. and then everything is gonna go back to normal anyway and who cares and etc etc etc i know the drill. if i wasn’t majorly looking forward to my radio show and my classes and upcoming basement shows right now i would probably be feeling suicidal. but i have other things to look forward to so i can’t really waste my energy dwelling on my bitterness
