Tailmon/Gatomon is an interesting example of the corners that writers can accidentally work themselves into, and the ways that writers can then work themselves back out.
Hikari and Tailmon are unusual for Digimon protagonists. Traditionally, a partner Digimon rests in their Child state, evolving to Adult, Perfect, or Ultimate form as necessary for battle. What makes Tailmon unusual, possibly even unique, is that her natural state is her Adult stage. Her child stage, Salamon, is only seen on rare occasions when she exhausts her strength.
This is an important distinction, since Digimon "power levels" so to speak are often wrapped up in those evolution stages.
In Digimon Adventure, this didn't matter so much. Hikari and Tailmon were introduced very late in the series. By that point, everyone had Perfect evolutions to battle with, and Taichi and Yamato were about to unlock their Ultimate evolutions. Adult-stage fighting was so last season.
But in 02, this presented a conundrum. The show was starting over fresh with new protagonists, new partners, and an escalation reset. Hikari and Takeru would join newcomers Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori and start over from the beginning.
This presented the writers with two separate problems. The first is that, as veterans of the first series, Hikari and Takeru were already comfortable evolving their Digimon to Perfect stage. This was resolved with the Dark Towers and Dark Digivice, which suppress evolution and force the characters to rely on the new Armor Evolution instead.
Blocking normal evolution served to nerf Takeru and Hikari, bringing them down to the new kids' levels - While occasionally lending them opportunities for Angemon and Angewomon to come out and shine, as a teaser of things to come.
But there was one other problem. Since the escalation was starting over, that meant the series would present the kids with Adult-stage Digimon as deadly threats that they needed Armor Evolution to overcome.
But the thing is? Tailmon is an Adult-stage Digimon in her natural state. This distinction suddenly mattered. The show needed all five kids to be running around in terror of Adult Digimon until they get the ability to fight back with Armor Digimon, but there was nothing stopping Tailmon from getting in there and throwing paws.
The solution? One of the very first things the show established is that Tailmon lost the golden ring she wears on her tail. Her "Holy Ring" would go on to have a plot-important role after the Kaiser arc was complete. But the more immediate effect it had was that losing her tail ring cut Tailmon's power dramatically.
This was kind of a new concept. Other Digimon don't work like this. Andromon doesn't turn as weak as a Child Digimon if you knock off his right index finger. But it needed to happen in order to bring Tailmon down to the others' level and stop her from walking all over the challenges that the protagonists would face in the early series.
I've often wondered why Digimon abandoned the concept of a consistent continuity, opting instead to wipe the slate clean and start over fresh with a new world with each series. Looking back now, I think I finally understand.
From the Dark Towers and Digimon Kaiser to the Holy Ring to Armor Evolution, it's kind of amazing just how much of 02's story had to be done the way it was, specifically to prevent Hikari's LVL100 endgame Digimon from effortlessly stomping all comers and nuking the tension. The show had to go out of its way to nerf Patamon and Tailmon, and then go further out of its way to nerf Tailmon some more.

Mimi notably never directly refers to Yamato over the course of both adventure and 02. However there IS an implication of interactions in the first half of the show.
Mimi is one of the youngest in the group. Though she and Koshiro are the same age, Koshiro's quiet serious nature and computer skills often lead him to be treated more seriously while Mimi's penchant for complaining (no matter how justified), makes her treated a little more like a junior. There's a hierarchy of protection, that Mimi sits only above Takeru for. Mimi, being on the younger side, is more free to complain about her situation. Sora clearly looks after Mimi as the senior girl, as does Joe as the oldest over all, but Yamato also seems to look after her, at least in the first half of the season, as an extension of looking after Takeru. For instance, very early in the series, Yamato advocated for taking a break, presumably on behalf of Takeru, but it was both Takeru and Mimi who were struggling. And in episodes 5, 7, and 19 Yamato seems to be tasked with looking after the younger kids, Takeru and Mimi, Koshiro sometimes, even if I don't think it was necessarily purposeful in 5.
As such while we don't see much of Yamato and Mimi directly interacting it does stand to reason that they get along and do work well together. Yamato is generally rather considerate of people's negative emotions, such as with how he treated Sora's breakdown in episode 26 and how he handled Mimi's graves early in the dark masters arc. I would imagine that Yamato is relatively tolerant of Mimi's complaining. Conversely I would imagine Yamato is someone who Mimi holds a lot of respect for.
As a side note, the fact Taichi leaves Hikari in Yamato's care I think also speaks to Yamato's unspoken role of "babysitter", the complimentary shield to the role of sword Taichi plays. Yamato's tendency to prioritize the group's well being, over Taichi's tendency to take initiative and confront enemies. It also of course makes sense in the context of their crests, Taichi is courage (to do things), and Yamato's is friendship (to look after people).
And of course on the other side we get Joe Taichi and Sora as a group, the initiative takers, the ones who are more likely to do a dangerous job. Joe who went out in episode 7, Taichi and Sora who went to find him. Those three were the ones dealing with Andromon while the others looked around the factory, and the ones who went in for Sora's crest. Koshiro goes either way depending on if his skills are necessary or not.

hikari going like “taichi this is andromon dont hurt him” when taichi has neither his digimon partner not the ability to evolve him in the current situation is so funny to me but also taichi and hikari being able to break throught the dark rings control through sheer force of will is just :chefskiss:

Digimon Adventure 02 (Blind Watch) - Episode 7
I really enjoyed this one! The pacing was good and we got some plot development for once. It also happened to feature some of my faves (Hikari and Koushiro). Really looking forward to learning more about Ken. I hope his true identity is revealed to the kids soon.
Notes:
-The gate sensor really looks like one of those old, "futuristic" Windows Media player skins. Talk about nostalgia!
-Lol @ Daisuke being pathetic for the whole episode. The bit where he acts like he's rivals with Takeru for Hikari's love and Takeru doesn't give a shit is pretty funny. That'd be great if Takeru ended up being gay or ace.
-Not sure why Daisuke was so shook about Angemon when Patamon's been armor-evolving to Pegasusmon. I guess he's more impressed by Angemon's level than his appearance.
-It weirds me out how the digimon are tied to their human partners to the extent that they're always defending their questionable behavior (Like Veemon and Daisuke's immaturity). Then again...I guess dogs love their owners unconditionally too lol
-Why does Daisuke's older sister wear what looks like a military/scouting uniform? I've never seen a school uniform like that before...(Also, why does she look like a female Taichi?)
-Did Andromon always have bright red nipples...?
-They kept flashing back to the commemorative photo from season 1, but Andromon wasn't even in it. I guess, he took the photo? I don't remember.
-It was nice that they acknowledged the need to give excuses to their parents when they're in the digi-world for a suspicious amount of time. That kind of realism ups the stakes and makes the real world feel more fleshed out.
-Hikari's digi-vice and determination are able to help Andromon from his evil ring and the end of the episode suggests that perfect-type digimon can't be controlled as easily as the lesser evolutions. Interested to see how Ken finds a way around this or how the kids use it to their advantage.

Anyway, love your analysis on Hikari. People (even fandom) tend to dismiss the fact that she is more than a gentle girl. She stands firm on her convictions (see 02 Episode 7 where she views brainwashed Andromon as the same old Andromon), she can be manipulative (though for a good purpose) to certain people (like Daisuke and Taichi). Don't forget that she can be outright "bloodthirsty" in cheering her partner (see Adventure Episode 50 for obvious example).
Well, I do need to be fair to people watching this series; Adventure and 02, especially 02, are series that use some of the most frustratingly subtle writing I've ever seen in my life, and this is why I have a hard time begrudging anyone who gets sidetracked by what the series seems to be saying on the surface. It takes two or even three watches to really be able to get what the series was going for in many respects, and I don't know if I should be expecting everyone to put themselves through that (especially if they didn't enjoy the series the first time; fifty episodes is a lot). My dispute with the fan discourse surrounding 02 is that I protest the idea that it didn't have depth or substance, but I will absolutely not protest that its way of delivery was extremely obtuse; if the substance was there it had to choose some really ridiculously oblique ways of communicating that, and there are times you really need to look out of your way to figure all this stuff out. Even in Japanese, I've seen wiki pages written by general Digimon fans that regurgitate the "brother complex" and "quiet girl" takes, in contrast to a description written of her by a hardcore 02 fan that hit the exact points I did about her specifically clamming up only when it's about her own personal problems (and I wrote that meta before I learned about that page, so this is all stuff that's in the series without need for incredibly speculative fan interpretation, you just need to work really hard to get it out of it). Even no less than four participants of a 02 group watch I was part of last year completely admitted to having misremembered her as more passive, and felt a need to apologize to her after witnessing her actions in 02 again.
And it's true that Hikari ended up surrounded by a lot of disadvantageous circumstances in meta. She has two famous episodes that portray her in contexts of being more listless than usual; Adventure and 02 aren't big on internal monologue, which puts characters who aren't honest about their feelings in a position where the audience has to work harder to figure out their mentality from their words and actions; despite first becoming a Chosen in Adventure, far more of her characterization is delved into in 02 than Adventure, but Adventure's higher notability means people tend to prioritize that; it's easy to focus only on the "character focus episodes" and serious moments rather than their behavior as a whole and thus extrapolate Hikari's silence on her own feelings into passiveness, even though that silence is because things suddenly got sensitive. And, even for those working with the Japanese version, American English dub-influenced discourse is still difficult to disentangle from the discussion, and unfortunately that didn't do her any favors either -- it took away credit for one of Hikari's most prominent actions (the Numemon liberation movement) by implying she was possessed again, and forced everyone into the exact same "snarky" character archetype so that it was much harder to get a grasp on her overall character (basically stripping down the depth of contrast of when she was speaking up and when she wasn't, and how certain aspects of her assertiveness and playfulness stood out against others in the group).
But there are still things that I feel should be fairly apparent even if you're casually watching the series for the first time, or regardless of which version you watched. That includes her actions in Adventure episode 36 and 02 episodes 7, 18, and 31, which weren't exactly subtle (and weren't among the bigger changes in the American English dub). So no matter how you slice it, reading Hikari like she's constantly quiet and passive and being dragged around by everyone requires severely reaching from one or two episodes out of context and practically forcing her into that archetype when the rest of the series contradicts it. Even if you do take the reading that Hikari's issues come from clinginess to her brother, 02 episodes 13 and 31 were obviously about her taking steps to overcome those issues and with Takeru and Miyako at the forefront of those subplots, so it's utterly baffling to see people see her drop one line in 02 episode 13 about how her brother used to step in for her and go "she is utterly devoted to her brother and clingy and refuses to care about anything else in her life,” even to the point of acting like this should be the case in the late stages of or after 02. At this point you'd have to invent a version of Hikari that doesn't exist! The aforementioned four people from my group watch admitted to having underestimated Hikari's range of action within 02, but even back then none of them had gone that far, because the series too obviously didn't support that.

Digimon Rant:
Digimon fans: God! Why were the chosen children/digidestined so friendly towards Meiko and willing to help her out when they first met her in tri? They didn’t even know she had a partner digimon at the time. This is totally out of character for them.
Me: D...did you even watch adventure and 02? Especially the scenes where they were friendly towards the international chosen children/digidestined in 02 and willing to help them out when they first met them? And the scene that basically confirms that Mimi was friends with people who don’t have partner digimon before they even went to the digital world which would also confirm she (and by extension the others) is willing to make friends with people regardless of whether or not they have digimon. Why would they not act the same way towards Meiko? It’s completely in character for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously this complaint was always incredibly stupid, hypocritical and poorly thought out and always will be and it also reminds me of that stupid megazord/giant robot complaint people throw towards xros wars/fusion (another incredibly stupid, hypocritical and poorly thought out complaint considering Omegamon/Omnimon is one of the most popular and recognisable digimon of all time). And no bringing up Wallace/Willis is not the well thought out rebuttal to this post that you might think it is since they met him before they met the international kids especially since tri takes place years after 02. And neither is bringing up the fact they were hesitant to let Ken join after he stopped being the digimon kaiser/emperor since Meiko doesn’t have a history of being a power hungry sociopath that abuses digimon like Ken. And speaking of the 02 kids that leads to another dumb reason to complain about Meiko.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And don’t even bother bringing up the 02 kids disappearance in tri as a gotcha card since it’s technically established that the reason they weren’t worried about them in tri was because they didn’t even know they were missing due to Maki lying to them and withholding information regarding their wellbeing as another stupid reason to bash Meiko and say it’s out of character for them to help her out. It should also be noted that they were suspicious of the Mysterious Man/Dark Gennai was actually Ken to begin with, as shown by Yamato/Matt asking about Ken’s whereabouts (which makes sense considering the fact that it’s been years since Ken was the digimon kaiser/emperor and that they know Ken can’t form Imperialdramon all by himself and how it wouldn’t make sense for them to not be able to differentiate said Imperialdramon in tri from the one in 02 since Mimi recognised Orgemon/Ogremon earlier in tri and Hikari/Kari recognised Andromon in 02 when he was controlled by a dark spiral alongside the fact that said Imperialdramon is never confirmed to be the same as the one in 02, why else would they not hesitate to kick it’s ass given all the facts I brought up?). As well as the fact that it’s established early on in tri that the main characters have mostly part drifted apart from each other which would include the 02 kids who aren’t even confirmed to still go to the same school as Takeru/Tk and Hikari/Kari (why else would part 1 of tri be called reunion).
Tumblr media
And if your response to this post is to go on a rant about how I’m stupid for defending tri and/or Meiko or how I’m not being “objective” because my opinion doesn’t align with some random stupid youtuber/content creator in the digimon fandom despite how I brought up multiple facts to support my claims and explain why I think the way I do then I think that says a lot more about you as a person than it does the tri and Meiko as a character. Do I sound like I’m making this post because I unironically like tri and by extension Meiko? Well... yes and I’ll even admit I might even come across as over defensive in this situation but that shouldn’t mean I’m not allowed to explain why I disagree with certain criticisms, especially when the people who make those criticisms always act like they’re the “objective” ones. Anyways I apologise for getting off topic with this rant and if this post seems out of character for someone like me considering the dumb stuff I’ve made in the past I just needed to get this off my chest.

Digimon Adventure subtext analysis: The family angle (Part II)
As mentioned in the previous post, Koushirou wasn’t even aware why exactly Taichi was acting the way he did - but once he gets to know what is going on, once he understands that Taichi is scared of the possibility of being responsible for (almost) killing his own sister, he becomes progressively more vocal about wanting to help him. (Part I, Part III)
Not only does he voice his understanding for Taichi’s behaviour twice and starts to oppose him on it, telling him to take breaks and to take care of himself - he still prioritizes their search for her in order to reassure Taichi constantly. Obviously, he’s the most logical choice in joining Taichi in his search for medicine, because he’s resourceful and Taichi knows him well enough to rely on his strategies. They’re partners in crime, they’ve done things like this together before when they saved Sora from Nanomon. But most of all, Koushirou is empathetic enough to listen to him, to immediately forgive him whenever his emotions get the best of him, to point out to Andromon that they HAVE to find her, because she’s Taichi’s sister. He thoroughly understands Taichi’s worries and wants nothing but for him to be less hard on himself.
Which is interesting when you take the first scene. Taichi tells him personally that it probably wasn’t a good idea to take Hikari with them to the Digital World. Koushirou doesn’t understand that at first, replying that they can’t save the Digital World without her, that she is a Chosen Child just like them. Taichi then explains that she probably didn’t even want to come with them, but didn’t say so.
“She tends to keep quiet and endure things when she doesn’t have to, you know?”
Why is it important that he tells Koushirou this at this point? Why is it important that he is the only one who knows? Because Taichi himself ends up doing exactly the same as Hikari.
He decides to take on Piemon on his own, endures the hits, wants to take all the pain on his own - he doesn’t have to do this alone, he can and should rely on his friends, who are, as mentioned, not new to fighting alongside him. And thus, Koushirou absolutely doesn’t agree with him, which causes him to become the most emotional/angry he has ever been up to this point. He’s entrusted with taking care of Hikari instead - thus he’s generally trusted by Taichi, who has enough faith in him to be sure that he can take care of his precious sister. However, Koushirou actually cares more about not letting Taichi die, wants him to rely on him/them just like he did in the past (f.e. when he strategically chose to let Koushirou solve the card riddle).
In the anime, Taichi specifically tells them that they should wait for Yamato to arrive and to Hikari in particular that she needs to rest, as they had just faced LadyDevimon. He doesn’t tell Koushirou why he doesn’t want HIM to fight though. This is even heavier - and more emotionally - phrased in the novels:
Tumblr media
In this context, “family” is underlined more than ever - even if it’s not mentioned in the anime. Koushirou can open up, be emotional and caring like this because he was able to reconcile with his parents, because he could “close the distance with other people”. That’s basically his role throughout the entirety of the Dark Master’s arc and it’s actually a shame that Taichi didn’t tell him like he did in the novels.
Because the mutual support and understanding is definitely here, although they simply prioritize differently - Taichi prioritizes Hikari’s safety as Koushirou prioritizes Taichi’s. Koushirou’s family issues getting resolved leads to him being the one who tries to help the one person he is emotionally closest to (besides Tentomon of course) with his own family related issues. Koushirou, who decided early on that he had to “do something” in order not to let the “feeling of unity” among them get shattered. Koushirou, who was seen not only developing a subtle interest in Taichi’s sister and reassuring her on two occasions, but also got to hear their entire backstory. Even if he doesn’t consciously understand the family angle to its full extent, it is becoming much more clear why he’s getting so frustrated with not being able to “help” in the way he wants to. Whereas Taichi obviously considers his “help” in protecting Hikari as important enough.
(Speaking of “importance” and “prioritizing” here, Taichi’s behaviour gets often interpreted as potential cause for Koushirou to get insecure about “not being considered equal/strong/helpful enough” to be allowed to help”. The stageplay even picked this up - whether on purpose or coincidental - by showing him get mad at the fact that he thought Taichi could be honest with him at least, after he had been watching him by his side for all these years. However, with the family angle in mind, it becomes significantly more clear that they’re simply not very good at communicating their needs properly: Taichi wasn’t just protecting Hikari by trusting his closest friend to protect her. He was intending to protect Koushirou too, even if he doesnt say so directly: “Just... Let me take care of this!” Koushirou, as seen in the novel bit, obviously also did not interpret it this way.)
Again, hoping that this was coherent enough for the time being, but I generally have just... A lot of feelings. (Btw, disclaimer: “Family” in this sense can obviously be read in several ways - whether it’s some kind of friendly/familial bond or in some way supposed to be romantic foreshadowing towards Taishirou or Koukari.)
