okay re: previous post I love the hc of Jason being able to talk to birds but my extremely silly caveat i like to put on it is that Jason is capable of talking to swans, but swans HATE HIM. They have like, a personal vendetta against Zeus/Jupiter and they won't outright attack Jason but they do refuse to talk to him. They will literally give him the silent treatment and do the whole "Hm? Did somebody say something? I didn't hear U_U"
On the other hand though, Reyna can talk to only swans specifically, because Bellona/Enyo is one of the Graeae and they can turn into swans. So every time Jason has to talk to a swan he has to ask Reyna to talk to them for him.

I’m waiting for something to download, so decided to do an Educational And Informative Post on my absolute favourite line in Our Flag Means Death.
“Hoist the mainbrace!”
Now, I’m sure you’ve heard about splicing the mainbrace. You probably know that, aside from a sneaky tot of rum, splicing involves weaving the ends of two ropes together, either to extend a rope or repair it. But what is the mainbrace? And why does splicing it involve booze? And how does one hoist it?
Well, these are the mainbraces on a modern tall ship (SV Tenacious, owned and operated by the Jubilee Sailing Trust):
And on a Napoleonic era warship (HMS Bellona, 74, as painted by Geoff Hunt):
To position the sails on a tall ship, you move the yards (the horizontal sticks with the big hankies hanging off them). You do this by bracing them – hauling on bits of string to swing them round. Those bits of string are called braces. The braces on the lowest yard, which holds the largest sail, are the mainbraces.
The mainbraces are the longest, heaviest pieces of running rigging on a ship. (Running rigging is the string that gets moved around, as opposed to standing rigging which stays still. Examples of standing rigging are the stays and shrouds which hold the masts up.)
They’re also absolutely essential. Without your mainbraces, you lose a lot of manoeuvrability, you lose a lot of power, and you’re a sitting duck (or seagull) for any passing pirates, Frenchmen or surviving twins out for your blood.
What does this have to do with drinking rum? (My second favourite activity, after pulling on bits of string.) If your mainbrace gets damaged, you have to fix it. Because it runs through blocks and takes a lot of weight, repairing it by splicing is an absolute bastard of a job. It’s usually carried out by the most competent sailors on board (Revenge would struggle) and they were traditionally rewarded with an extra tot of rum. Splicing the mainbrace became slang for rewarding the crew with a drink.
And, finally, how does one go about hoisting the mainbrace?
One doesn’t. One can’t. The order is complete fucking nonsense that makes no sense to anybody who has the slightest clue about how ship string works.
And that’s why it’s my favourite line in Our Flag Means Death.
OFMD said, “We could exhaustively research and get everything correct, à la Patrick O’Brian. We could wing it a bit but aim to be basically correct, à la CS Forester. Or we could go the Knight’s Tale route and say fuck everything.” And then they started blasting Queen’s We Will Rock You and went back to figuring out how to put more leather on Taika Waititi.
And I raise my rum to them for that.

Mulciber ignored the question. “Look at you! That mask suits you well, my friend. I knew it would. How are you feeling today?”
“F-fine, sir.” The vigilante said anxiously. “Uh, Apollo said you wanted to see me. Have I done something wrong?”
“No, no, quite the opposite.” Mulciber clapped his hand on his shoulder and led him over to the table. “I have an introduction to make.”
He made a gesture toward Sophia. “This is Agent Sophia Colbo, an esteemed enforcer of the Watch who’s been hot on our trail. Agent, meet our newest recruit. Our newest Prophet.”
SMILE - Agent Ace, Chapter 10 (Harley's POV):
“Did you make this?” Harley asked breathlessly.
“Only partly.” Jade stood next to her, staring at the window and looking as mesmerized as Harley felt. “A couple of weeks ago, I came by here and found another artist leaving her mark. I didn’t know her, but she caught me watching and asked if I wanted to join her.”
A smile grew on her face as her eyes drifted over the painting. “I didn’t want to at first—it’s sort of a rule that you shouldn’t paint over someone else’s art—but she insisted. Said that we could be partners. So I helped her finish it, and I added Max’s name, with her permission.”

Blumoore was as vibrant as ever. The Vibe, a grungy music club and one of Harley’s favorite night time hangouts, was on full display as usual. Crowds flocked in and out of the venue, and she could almost feel the pump of hard rock vibrating in her bones. As the club disappeared from the window, she caught more familiar sights. The Equinox Cafe, Dorian’s Garden—her mother’s favorite florist—and the corner bookstore where Harley had practically grown up. Even the overpriced juice bar she’d never set foot inside before brought a calm wave of nostalgia washing over her.

The car lurched to the side as it took a turn and picked up speed. Sophia shifted back upright in her seat as they left Harmont behind, disappearing into a glittering city skyline. If they hadn’t been seen, they’d be in the clear, for now.
But Sophia didn’t feel better in the slightest. She’d been unable to shake that memory of her father since she first encountered the vigilantes. It used to be a fond memory—a solace in times when she was feeling nostalgic—but now it left a sour taste in her mouth.

"Mouse," she hissed, nearly tripping over him in the dim light. Mouse looked up at her, yellow eyes wide, and let out a pitiful cry. "Did you get lost again?" she asked, bending to scoop the cat into her arms. He buried his face in the crook of her elbow and purred. Rowan rolled her eyes -- he was such a dramatic little thing. "Let's go find Juniper, hm?"
Her sister's room was in a separate wing, making Rowan about as far removed from her family as she could get while still being in the same home. Juniper's door was slightly ajar and, once Mouse recognized where he was, he leapt from Rowan's arms and squeezed his small body through the crack. Rowan contemplated going to knock, but Juniper was probably still down at dinner and had simply forgotten to close her door as per usual. Besides, Juniper didn't need to worry about Rowan anymore than she already did.
Retracing her steps, Rowan found herself back in the spot where she found Mouse and it was only then that she realized that particular spot led to two places -- right and she would be back in the dining room, where Bellona and Frederick were no doubt making sure their guests forgot all about Rowan and her silly little outburst. But left. Left and she would be in the main entrance, with no one around to stop her from walking through the doors and out of the grounds.
It wasn't a choice at all.

Clelia Bellona Durand (née Rovere) - Clelia and Aldéric met each other at a dinner party when they were in their early 20s. Clelia worked as a Spy/Auror for the International Confederation of Wizards. She was tasked with keeping an eye on suspicious affairs all over the world, especially in the UK during the Second Wizarding War. He fell for her witty and daring personality in an instant and they eloped a year after. Soon she found herself pregnant and the two were overjoyed to welcome a new member to their family. Jupiter followed two years after but their happiness shouldn't last very long as Clelia was killed by Death Eaters about 3 months after the birth of their second child.

Elio Amédée Durand (b. in 1995) - Aldéric is super proud of Elio! Not only did he grow up to be a kind and confident man but he also managed to become Seeker for the Quiberon Quafflepunchers and the French National Team. The two are thick as thieves and would train together all the time. Elio took him on surfing trips when he was older.
Jupiter Adèlie Durand (b. in 1997) - His little baby! He used to take her stargazing when she was little, telling Jupiter her mother was now a star in the night sky. He loves her to bits and she admires him greatly. They could talk about anything and everything for hours. He really tries to be a good dad and it shows in his strong relationship with his children.
Backstory
Aldéric grew up within the walls of Fort Durand where he learned all about dragons, combat and duelling. He later became one of the most renowned Dragonologists of his time (reason yet tbd).

After the death of his wife, merely months after the birth of their daughter Jupiter, he was utterly devastated. In an attempt to drown out the pain, he flung himself into work for the resistance. Alongside Kaari, he escorted or more so smuggled innocent wizards out of the UK and offered them refuge at Fort Durand, knowing it to be safe. After the war and now a single dad, he retreated to Norway for a while to heal his emotional wounds and worked with Kaari at his sanctuary—his kids and their safety now his top priority. Between his studies and travels, he’d go back and forth between France and Skalafell, taking his kids with him wherever he’d go, as long as it wasn't too dangerous.
When Elio was about to turn 11 he agreed to fill in the spot of Professor for CoMC at Hogwarts—although only temporarily. Little did he know that he'd soon find it quite fun and what was supposed to be a year had turned into (a not yet defined number of) years. As he is really passionate about dragons he offered extra classes on Dragonology for interested students.
After his time as Professor, he returned to his usual work and took over the fort—still travelled a ton and helped out Kaari whenever he needed him. He gives lectures from time to time.

Vanguard-
Huge beatstick, as long as she’s not hitting an enemy that’s just spawned in she’s doing an extra 18% damage thanks to being a debuff FIEND, her secondary always crits which is weird but I won’t say no fuck suicide boats, she’s pretty stacked AA wise and gets a slick buff to it to boot, her crossfleet buffs other fleets hms vanguards fp and thankfully that’s the only real faction lock she has (her other faction lock only says “when other hms ships” so if it’s only one it’s practically free) my only worry is she seems to like to buff her reload which might make her hard to time to so maybe no helly no nj but her 10% across the board if you’ve been in her personal space too long plus fat damage if she’s hitting the yeet more then makes up for it imo
Bellona- ohi dido with ara I didn’t read any of her other skills I love her she could do no wrong say she’s bad and I’ll kill you im not joking I value this png over the average human life by leaps and bounds
Cheshy chan- she do be a ship, less stats but she’s a fairly good ship plus a zombie if you don’t have cheshy already she’s a very nice budget ship

They want her to be mt and they’ve roided her with every damage reduc know to man but good lord she only has 2k hp and a vg heal at fucking 20 god damn seconds for FIVE percent, she’s faction locked and hull locked (three hms and no hulls heavier then CL) first naturally ssr hms dd (most decorated one too) and they did this to her puts a horrible taste in my mouth, so we’ll stop here before I upset myself over a png

I can’t decide if she’s good or not, gives our plenty spec burn, lots of fighters, if she shoots down planes take even less avi damage, weird and strange tho every lusty class ship (including herself I presume) take 8% more damage (why) if there are other lusties in the fleet buff them 15% for acc and avi (not herself tho), if she’s the only one she gets the buff, but she doesn’t get acc for some reason (WHY), BUT if you also use PoW (I’m gonna vomit) or repulse (this includes repulse meta), you get both- but she still only gets fuckign 12% acc
Revenge-
She’s actually really interesting with some good self buffs and the ability to fire from flagship while being off flag as long as another bb is flag, but tragically she’s also a purple bb
You all know I don’t do metas but Memphis doesn’t look terrible
AFCS (new equip) is just hpfcr but better (knew it would be but it still hurts)
All in all a good event but when it hurts it really fucking hurts holy shit

On our arrival on board we found that the vessel was a Dutch Indiaman, which had been captured by one of our cruizers on her voyage home from Java. She was laden very deeply with cinnamon, nutmegs, cloves, and other spices, besides pepper, and was valued at 400,000£ sterling. She had come home from the island of St. Helena, with convoy, and was now proceeding up the river, to be given in charge of the prize agents in London.

HMS Bellona 1760
The HMS (His Majesty's Ship) Bellona was one of the most famous 74-gun ships of the British Navy. The 74-gun ship formed the backbone of the principal naval powers of Europe from the Seven Years War (1756-1763) until the end of the Napoleonic Wars (1815). In fact, compared with the less-armed lower classes, and the 80-gun ships, structurally unstable, the 74s were considered the ideal compromise between gun power and manoeuvrability.
Launched from the French shipyards in the 1730s, the first 74-gun vessels, although structurally weak (like many of the ships built in France at that time), immediately showed their superiority in comparison with the British ships then employed in similar operative roles. After the capture of several French 74s during the two Battles of Finisterre in 1747, the British Admiralty began in 1755, under the Surveyor Thomas Slade, the construction of the first ships of that type, the Dublin class. Three more ships, the Hero, Hercules and Thunderer, were ordered the following year.
Sir Thomas Slade: 1703-1771) was a British engineer, builder of certain classes of ship and responsible for the construction of many units of the Royal Navy. He held the post of Surveyor of the Navy from 1755 to 1771. He was the builder of the 100-gun HMS Victory vessel.
The Bellona, together with the Dragon and Superb, was commissioned on 28 December 1757; Slade's draught was produced on 31 January 1758. The construction of the Bellona began at Chatham shipyards in the same year, on 10 May. The Bellona, launched on 19 February 1760, sailed, on 8 April, to join the battlefleet which was then blockading Brest.

In May 1761 she was detached to patrol off the River Tagus; on 13 August at 3pm, the Bellona , in the company of the frigate Brilliant, sighted a small French squadron, constituted by the 74-gun ship Courageux and the frigates Mauliceuse and Hermione. Aftera long chase, the following morning at 5 the Bellona reached the Courageux and fought it, while the Brilliant engaged the two frigates.

Two hours later, the Courageux. Owing to the terrible damages suffered, struck her colours; severely damaged, neither of the British ships was in any condition to pursue the two frigates, so they were able to make good their escape. Having been properly repaired, the Bellona was fitted as a guardship at Portsmouth until 1770; in 1771 she sailed to Chatham; there , she was laid up in ordinary, with guns and rigging removed, until 1778, when she was docked and began a major repair. Particularly, the poopdeck bulwark was modified: 6 short-barrel guns of new conception, the first carronades, were fitted on it. In March 1780, her bottom was coppered for the first time.
In the same year, on 30 December, the Bellona took part in the capture of the 44-gun Dutch ship Princess Caroline; then she cruised off Gibraltar, in the North Sea and the West Indies. From 1783 to 1791 she was laid up at Portsmouth again; after further repairs at Chatham, in 1793 she joined Admiral Howe's fleet in the Channel.
Until 1797 the Bellona operated in the West Indies again, against the French fleet, and in the Baltic; in 1801 she could take no part in the Battle of Copenahagen, because she was grounded just outside the scene of the action. She was employed in the blockade of Cadiz; then, the Bellona was at Jamaica, at Portsmouth again and at Barbados. In 1806 she took part in the chase of the Foudroyant and the destruction of the 74-gun Impetueux, both French Ships. Although more than 50 years from her launch were passed, the Bellona served in the Navy until February 1814; she was broken up at Chatham in September 1814.

Ancient Rome gave great consideration to its goddess of war, Bellona. Often described as the female shadow of Mars, she was much more as her Kingdom encompassed all aspects of the conflict, diplomatic and military. Even her name shows importance, since in Latin 'bellum' means war, from the name of this goddess.
