1 • once i was seven years old

wendy remembered the panic running through her veins the day they took pietro from the orphanage. the grisha had arrived in their beautiful keftas, their strides long and confident. they had the untested children lined against the wall. it wasn’t too many of them just her, pietro, and two others she didn’t really care about.

wendy wasn’t too worried either, the odds of her or pietro being grisha was astronomical, there was no reason for her to fret. this would be over soon and her, and pietro can go back to their usual mischief.

the grisha stood smiling (fake smiles, thought wendy,) while the stern man in red explained exactly what was going to happen, wendy didn’t much care for that either. no reason for her to listen, she was certain she wasn’t grisha. sure enough, the red kefta’d grisha pricked her finger (she didn’t even flinch) and nothing happened. she went back to the line without being told.

pietro was the last. he nervously went up, his steps so incredibly small (wendy frowned, he’s always so shy) until finally, he was standing in front of them. pietro hesitantly raised his hand to the grisha; the grisha pricked his finger. he flinched and yelped in pain, but that wasn’t the part that worried wendy, it was the light that came bursting from wound.

a blinding, scorching light. everyone looked away, (they’re going to take him away, thought wendy, her best friend ) except for her.

there was shock for a few seconds (‘ ‘sun summoner,’ ’ said the grisha) and then, they grabbed pietro, and hurried him outside into a carriage.

wendy had screamed and kicked against the woman who ran the orphanage(‘ ‘ leave him alone! ’ ’), and pietro unabashedly had mirrored her actions (‘ ‘ let me go! i don’t want to leave! ’ ’). the first time he was actually fighting back. they didn’t want to be separated but he was grisha and she, she was merely an otkazat'sya.

the woman hurled wendy against the wall, the woman’s eyes burning (‘ ‘ selfish, foolish girl! he’s going save all of ravka. ’ ’) as wendy bit her lip to keep herself from whimpering in pain.

she returned the woman’s burning gaze tenfold. the woman huffed and left, the rest of the children followed suit.

wendy ran outside, the carriage was gone. they were gone. (‘ ‘ stupid shadow fold! stupid black heretic! stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid! ’ ’) pietro was gone.

2 • i met darkness at the age of eight

wendy remembered she was playing in the meadow nearby with another one of her friends, still her friend didn’t compare to pietro but it was still better than being an outsider ( ‘ ‘ i don’t want to be alone.’ ’ she cried a year ago), when she met the shadow summoner.

the woman came (wendy still refuses to learn her name), she seemed frightened, extremely frightened, she led her friend away who cowered at the shadowy figure passing through the meadow.

wendy knew who was approaching her, but unlike the woman and her friend, she wasn’t afraid. instead, she stayed seated on the grass and continued picking flowers for her flower crown.

darkness surrounded the flowers and grass beneath his feet (‘ ‘ stand. ’ ’), he did not kneel to reach her level. he stood above her, he will always stand above her.

wendy continued on her task, perhaps a hint of another color would make her flower crown pop with color, she liked vibrant colors. she plucked another flower from the ground (yellow, thought wendy, reminds me of pietro), and hummed.

the darkling watched her with a brow raised (‘ ‘ are you deaf, girl? ’ ’), his black coat blowing in the wind.

wendy didn’t look up (‘ ‘ no. ’ ’), she was almost done just a few more flowers, (i just don’t care, she thought) so picked out another yellow from the grown.

he kneeled this time, he was still taller than her (‘ ‘ frightened? ’ ’). he wouldn’t be surprised, made himself in that image to keep not just himself but grisha safe.

wendy wanted to scream but settled for a frown instead (‘ ‘ no, i’m not frightened, ’ ’ she still didn’t want to incur his wrath). she picked a blue flower this time. two more ( ‘ ‘ you took my best friend. ’ ’) and she was done.

the darkling sat down, an amused smile danced on his lips (‘ ‘ i see, you’re upset with me. ’ ’) he was mocking her, she could tell. it was the same tone the older kids used on her ( ‘ ‘ are you going to bring him back? ’ ’) before she punched them. this time, the darkling picked a red flower ( ‘ ‘ no, but he is being rather stubborn. ’ ’) and handed it to her.

wendy picked an identical red flower near her ( good for him, she thought). he weaved the flower in her hair (‘ ‘ i see now who he’s mimicking, ’ ’ he chuckles), it suited her.

one more flower to go. she reached over for a daffodil and weaved it together (‘ ‘ would you like to see him? ’ ’). she stopped and looked around expectantly (‘ ‘ he’s not here. ’ ’ said the darkling), the flower almost fell from her hair.

wendy pouted ( stupid jerk, shadow summoner, she thought), then huffed angrily as she finally, finished her flower crown. she fought back tears, she wouldn’t cry in front of him.

the darkling gingerly took the flower crown from her hands (‘ ‘ but you can see him, all the time if you’d like? at the little palace. ’ ’) he examined it.

wendy finally looked at the shadow summoner there was a bit of hope in her eyes, just a sliver and then (‘ ‘ but i’m not grisha. ’ ’) it was gone.

he gently placed the flower crown on her head (‘ ‘ that’s not what i asked, i asked if you want to see him? ’ ’). it was little too big for her head (his fault he was distracting me, thought wendy).

wendy nodded fervently, and the flower crown fell loopslidedly down her head. she decided in that moment that if the shadow summoner was just being cruel, she’d throw a rock at him, maybe kick him a few times for good measure.

the darkling reached out his large hand towards her, she saw a silver ring on his pinky. it looked sharp like the test a year ago. wendy reluctantly (if it means seeing pietro again, she thought) placed her small hand in his.

they walked hand in hand to a black carriage paired with black stallions.

wendy saw the woman on the corner of her eye ( ‘ ‘ you can’t take her. she’s not grisha, ’ ’ her voice shook). wendy didn’t see the cold look from the darkling but she saw the woman had cowered beneath his gaze. there was no more resistance coming from her.

wendy climbed into the carriage, it wasn’t empty there were two men in red kefta’s: one she recognized (‘ ‘ ivan, ’ ’ he said sternly) from a year ago (frigid man, she thought) and the other a complete stranger ( ‘ ‘ my name is fedyor, ’ ’ he smiled), a nicer stranger.

a small greeting left her mouth like the woman taught her to introduce herself. fedyor beamed at her, ivan didn’t seem to care.

the darkling settled in besides her, he tapped the ceiling and the carriage jolted forward. it didn’t take long for the gentle rhythm of the ride to lull her to sleep (see you soon, pietro, wendy dreamed of him)

THOTS ON SHADOW AND BONE

Hello everyone! it is I, Trice, and i come with my thoughts on the Shadow and Bone show cause ive got many

I'm gonna divide this in what i liked, what i disliked, and what i think could have been better but didn't really bother me. Feel free to send your opinions too!

As a whole, I really liked the show and I think it's a great adaptation that both fans and newcomers will enjoy. It's super well done! and every episode had me glued to the tv even though I knew what was going to happen.

What i liked

Mal and Alina

I never really liked Mal in the books, mainly cause he had like, nothing going on for him, and not having his pov made him no favors whatsoever. Alina's perception of him was everychanging, two factors that didn't make him unlikeable necessarily, but that made me not want to read about him. In the show he's way more likeable and even though he still doesn't have a lot going on for him, you can see that he's always trying to protect alina, and you also see a bit of his demeanor through Archie's acting. I think he made a great job at portraying him. And Alina! Alina who in the books was essentially a y/n sort of character (although she did get better over time), her character, likes, dislikes, her DRIVE was incredibly portrayed in the show. Also Jessie (loml, marry me) and Archie have incredible chemistry together and they sold their yearning SO WELL (and so did the kid actors portraying them as children oh my GOD)...yall...i cried when they held hands. My favourite scene was definitely when Alina took care of Mal's wounds (a favorite trope of mine). And the HURT in their eyes whenever they thought the other was in danger....i saw the show dubbed but I'm sure their voices made it beyond incredible as well, their face acting was just on. point. Overall the show rEALLY makes me root for them both individually and together which is something the books didn't manage to do.

The Darkling

AAAAA i really enjoyed the Darkling omg, incredible charisma, Ben does such a great job (and so did his voice actor in Spanish oh my GOD). His acting was just as I imagined it in the books and i loved how he could be as sweet and mysterious as he could be menacing. In fact! i liked him more than i did in the book, and i think it was a great choice to make him more human. I'm not sure if this was Ben or the writing, but i could really see his yearning for an equal, for Alina, his loneliness and his thirst for power and control too. Great love interest, even greater villain. And his wardrobe was phenomenal. I also really liked how they implied that The Darkling was a name given by other people, it was very believable that people would call someone who literally controls shade something akin to "son of the dark" or something of the sort, instead of it being a name he gives himself or his job title (both if which are incredibly pathetic and cringy to think about).

Jesper

No comments. He was just great. I love Kit.

Nina

Omg Danielle did SUCH a great job at portraying Nina, it's exactly how i imagined her in Six of Crows.

Helnik

THE. YEARNING. THE. CHEMISTRY. I didn't love their scenes at the boat but once that was over I was practically screaming at the screen to jUST KISS ALREADY. Calahan and Daniell have such good chemistry together and the few changes they made only served the story better. I did wish they had development over more time cause Matthias' change of mind felt too quick, but i get why they had to rush. Because of how good their chemistry was, their fallout also was incredibly painful.

Inej's fear of the Menagerie and her morals

Amita's portrayal of Inej's hurt, devotion and her refusal to kill (and later hurt cause she has killed) is incredibly subtle but so SO effective. She's so talented really and truly sold Inej's feelings throughout the show.

VFX

Man.....the fold, the volcra, the grisha powers.....kudos to the animators and overall artistic team cause they were incredible. Also seeing the different title animations in each episode was such a tiny detail that made me so excited and they all looked so good.

Ketterdam

Again, kudos to the artistic team, everything about Ketterdam felt so alive (and weirdly moist), truly sold a kind of aesthetic and life that is so characteristic if the Barrel, even when i didn't imagine it that way in the books.

David

He appeared like, twice, and both times were so cute and charming I can't wait to see more of him both on his own and with Genya.

The Wardrobe

So, at first i hated the keftas. I thought the looked tacky and costume, but when you see them on screen they're just perfect (although i have to say the patterns on some of the keftas were kind of...cheap looking? and the training keftas were just kinda boring. My favourite was the Darkling's. Aside from that, i really liked Kaz's and inej's clothes too. Very distinctive and recognizable (although it was kind of weird seeing Inej in teal instead of purple lmao).

And the queen's dresses. Chefs kiss.

It's...so cheesy (affectionate)

The whole show felt like the kind of movies I would watch as a kid like Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean. The writing was stylized enough to make it incredibly dramatic and overall there was just so much heart behind all of it. Definetely a show to watch again and again and feel all of it, cause that's what it being so cheesy managed, to make me actually feel for it. It feels like something to watch on a rainy afternoon after a bad day....it's great okay i really enjoyed it, even (specially) the most unbelievable parts of it. And here's the thing, it's something that i think a lot of newer tv and film have lost, so this is good.

What i didn't like

Zoya

Mostly cause of the writing. Originally, in the first book, i didn't like her, neither as a character (stereotypical mean girl with no other motivation than to bang the love interests....all three of them....what's new i still think it's an incredibly sexist trope) or a person (hey at least this was intentional), but over time i grew to LOVE her (mean girl turns out to have a good heart and actually respects the mc and decides to fight alongside her cause it's what's right, without necessarily liking her or giving up her character??? AND she has strong motivations??? now THAT'S new). In the show, i hoped they would keep her mean girl nature while foreshadowing her depth, but all they did was turn her into a petty seductress with barely any screentime, and that only makes her not even a bad antagonist but just a boring character to watch. Not only that but they took away a big part of her character that needed to be developed in the next books. I wanted to watch her rivalry with Alina, her unjustified venomous tongue too, I wanted to be entertained by her and I wasn't. This was also a problem cause when she finally changed teams, and when she hugged Alina, it was incredibly unsatisfying, it would have had a way stronger effect if we had seen her being Ruthless Zoya with a big ambition. I also didn't like how we were told that she didn't like alina, or that she had a family, instead of it being shown on screen. Just from the show, all i can tell you about her is that she likes to bang people and she has a good moral code i guess. Yall, I'm so petty about this.

Kaz

So, I didn't hate him, in fact i think I would have enjoyed him if I hadn't read the books first, cause the two things that bother me about him were two essential characteristics of him in the books. FIrstly, he seems so strained, instead of the seemingly laid back, almost chill looking (even though we know he's not chill at all) Kaz we see in the books, the Kaz that always knows something that you don't. Show Kaz doesn't seem to always be in control, to always have the last word, the last laugh. Instead he seems strained, all the damn time. And I think this is mainly a writing and directing issue. And he also seems weak, something Book Kaz would never do. This is also an issue cause because he doesn't have the same presence he has in the books, the times where he is weak, don't seem as effective. Sure, Pekka Rollins has essentially reduced him and humiliated him, but I haven't seen enough of Kaz being actually dangerous for this to be shocking and for Pekka to seem even more hateable (and, i really liked Pekka, loved him as an antagonist more than i did in the books). Idk, Kaz was so charismatic and just fun and engaging to read in the books that his portrayal in the show felt lacking.

Alina's power's VFX

The little suns were cute and all but the light coming from within her was just ugly I'm sorry.

SFX

A lot of the sound design was just too stylized for the tone of the show i think. I particularly remember the sound of Mal's punches....what's that about.

What i think could have been better, but didn't particularly dislike

The Crows' storyline

And i think part of this is a consequence of Kaz not being as witty as he was in the books. Where's the incredibly complicated heist moves? the even more unbelievable C and D plans when something goes wrong? I didn't like that them getting Alina was essentially just luck, cause i didn't see enough of them being smart and quick on their feet. I also think it was unnecessary to have their storyline mixed with Alina's, i would have enjoyed watching a different heist, maybe in Ravka as well, and them incidentally crossing paths with Alina, more than i liked this storyline. ironically enough, the heist was the part i was least interested in

Genya and Alina

I just feel like her relationship with Alina wasn't strong enough, and i think it's because the show tried to make us believe they were much closer than they were without spending the necessary time in them.

Overall, I really really enjoyed the show, i will be watching it again (particularly cause i want to watch it in English) and i cannot wait for the second season omg (although i have to say, I'm scared for Nikolai)

K this got LONG so here's a read more!

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

Honestly even though I don't multi-ship often I DO usually get the appeal behind ships so this is a really short list. This will probably get me some hate but I still to this day can't get behind c/ex@ from the show that will not be named. But then again I do get the appeal of two super attractive women with chemistry and the whole ruler/ girl who makes the ruler change their ways thing. So I guess I get it even if I don't like it?

Also, and this is not to hate on Hinny, but Harry and Ginny from HP are not my cup of tea. I like what fandom has done for them but the actual content we get for them in the books (and movies, but I prefer the books) isn't enough for me to love them. Same with Mal and Alina from S & B/ Grishaverse, they're so bland to me in the books but the show is doing far better with them and actually making Mal ya know. Likeable. Again, I don't ship it, but best friends to lovers is top tier so I get it.

Oh! I also don't really get Dwalin/Ori from The Hobbit, but that is probably in large part because I'm a Dwalin/Nori shipper. Again though, all of the secondary characters' relationships in The Hobbit rely on fans to extrapolate HARD and wear extreme shipper goggles, and ik there's that scene where Dwalin helps Ori out of the river so like.. maybe that's where it's from? I don't hate it or anything but it's always something that's made me go ??? cause I have no idea where the heck it came from.

Apart from that... I can't think of any rn? I feel like I understand where all the PJO ships come from, even if I don't ship them. There are a couple that I don't understand how they can be someone's OTP, just because I find them super boring (no offense to those who ship C@leo or J@siper but I just don't love how Rick handled those relationships). In TSC I think fandom mainly vibes with the same pairings and that's true for most of my book fandoms. With the shows I watch I don't think fans majorly ship anything too out there for me. Maybe I don't interact enough with fandoms to tell. So this is all I got.

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

Oh my god, oh my god, this is a can of worms, my lord. A pairing I'm not so sure about, but characters? Abso-fucking-lutely. I took a break from PJO fandom for exactly that reason and the list of characters is endless honestly, for multiple fandoms.

I won't say fandom ruined Bell@rke for me cause I still ship it, but I definitely lost enthusiasm with how toxic the shows fandom was and then that was made even worse when the show completely destroyed itself with the worst writing and plots ever in the latter seasons.

Also I have a feeling that G@me of Thrones/ @soiaf ruined one for me but I can't remember this very second. Maybe not, and again that's probably cause I don't interact with fandoms en masse, usually just through fic and following a few people I vibe with in each.

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

Yes, quite a few! I used to dislike Drarry (for obvious reasons I feel) and Romione (as a kid I wanted Hermione to be with Harry and even when I grew out of that I really didn't like she was with Ron) but fandom changed that for sure. And same with Darklina now, I was upset cause I felt like the books really underutilized their relationship and fell short of what could have been a super awesome pairing if better explored, but the show fandom is taking it in so many different ways that I'm starting to really love them despite the reasons I shouldn't.

And I won't say I hated Hayffie in THG, but definitely the only reason I ship them is from reading @ellanainthetardis's fic Have a Drink Sweetheart and then all the others written for them. That portrayal of Hayffie and the characters have become my own headcanons now because I've been reading them for so long and they're so good.

Fandom made me ship Leon and Morgana from Merlin too, though that's very lowkey. I never hated them, I just never thought of them as a pairing until reading fic.

20. What is the purest ship in the fandom?

Percabeth. I don't care which fandom, it's Percabeth. Growing up together, going from enemies to friends to best friends to lovers? The establishment of them being best friends and the way Rick wrote that friendship was so pure, and they are a couple with no internal problems, all external, and you just know they're gonna be together through everything, fighting at each other's side, cause that's the way they are. There's a reason they're my OTP and it's cause they are the most well-established, ride or die couple I can think of. They're just so solid.

21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?

Love em for fandom but personally I very rarely get behind crackships just because I usually need a lot of build up, scenes, good dialogue and chemistry, etc. to ship something, so most of my ships aren't crack ships. The only one I can really think of that I actively root for and ship and would read fic for is Billy/ Owen from 911 Lonestar which is just... something.

Like idk if Barduil from The Hobbit is crack because ik it's quite popular... what makes a ship a crack ship anyway? Lack of canon reference? Is it cause they two characters would be so random together because they barely ever interact? Or because it's SO unrealistic you know for sure it will never happen but want it to anyway? Or is it lack of popularity in fandom? I need someone to define this so I have a better answer :D if it's the second option then I have MANY

I love seeing fandom stuff for crack ships though, cause seriously, it's fiction, ship who you want. If you ship two characters just cause you think they're pretty side by side then that's enough for me. Make all of the fan art and fic you like.

22. Popular character you hate?

Oof. Jason from HOO. And Leo in everything after The Lost Hero. I hated Piper in The Lost Hero and Mark of Athena but like her after those. I don't like any of the book characters from S & B except Nikolai, but I like everyone in the show (except David? Why did they make him so weird? Like he's not even awkward, he's straight up rude imo, but anyway). In @soiaf I don't like Jon Snow, I think he's boring. And I despise Jorah Mormont cause I think he's creepy for having a crush on Dany.

Didn't love Stefan in TVD, too much of a goody-two-shoes. I liked dark Stefan but it felt like a totally different character. Honestly most of the characters I don't like cause they're boring or too by-the-book.

OH! A big one in M@rvel is Captain America. Can't stand him honestly, I like him as a character to have in the story, but I like never agree with him on anything. I like a couple of his one-liners but that's it really. I also don't like Gale in THG, idk if that's controversial. Or Lex@ from the show that will not be named because I think she's manipulative and not good for any of the characters i DO love.

Is Ron popular? I think so. I like fandom Ron but not canon Ron and idk why. I think I'm growing out of it but I read those books when I was like 7 initially so I thought it was awful of Ron to stop being friends with Harry because he was jealous and I never really got over that.

There are so many but I'm gonna stop now.

23. Unpopular character you love?

Again, tons. I love anyone whose got kind of a tortured backstory because it makes them more interesting to me.

I love Movieverse Hawkeye! I think Clint is great and while I wish his deafness was canon in Marvel and I don't love J Remmer, I do love Hawkeye a lot. He was honestly one of the only Marvel characters that felt consistent and in-character throughout the movies.

I like President Snow from THG just cause I think he was a fantastic villain. And Effie and Haymitch aren't unpopular, but they're probably my favourites, again because of the fics mentioned above.

Leon from Merlin!! I don't actually think he's unpopular, but he's like... my fourth favourite character in the show which I know IS considered high for most people.

Sandor Clegane from ASOIAF. Not the show, just the books. His book character is phenomenal and I am so excited for GrrM to finish the goddamn series so I know what happens to him.

The Stolls and Katie Gardner from PJO cause fandom created Tratie and sucked me in at a young age.

Bellatrix Lestrange? Is she unpopular? I don't think so but she's another one I think is a fantastic villain. I'm almost more interested in her than Voldemort tbh.

OK, I've recently fallen into the Grishaverse (been years since I read a book in just two days), SO . . . tell me all about your main SaB OCs! :-D

i’m honored you wanna know about them 🥰🥰 be warned i made too many lmao and i might’ve rambled a bit srry!!

my main focus is kseniya kozar, darkling li, my heartrender bby, her entire story is basically her having her loyalties split between her love for the darkling and well, common sense. i guess you could say she’s a spy but not really?? idk it’s complicated. her personality… she’s always very focused on furthering herself which is her best and worst trait because she sometimes pushes herself too far, very chill person, good at finding how people work

next is inessa volkova, an escaped presumed stolen grisha who gets pulled back into things at the little palace when she bumps into mal, pairing alina and mal! i put her through a lot, with the whole constant hiding and running away alone for years, never trusting anyone, having identity issues and being very empathetic but having ridiculous survival instincts in the middle of a war

next is my crows!! i technically have two but iyana drozdova is the one i gave the main POV so i’ll be focusing on her!! she’s a grisha too but doesn’t use her gifts too often so she isn’t as powerful as my other ocs but she knows how to work a dagger so like she’s still pretty badass imo. she’s friends with jesper which is how she gets involved w the crows, and her story is just so angsty, she had such a horrible childhood she repressed memories of it and the ones she does remember is … not good. she’s basically a thief and occasionally an assassin for hire.

OK LAST ONE ((technically i have three more but they aren’t mains and i don’t wanna keep you here forever))

this one is my first villain oc czarina, paired with the darkling. her main goals are to rule ravka even if it’s in the shadows, and to make the darkling life harder 💖 she got into the king and queen’s good graces enough to be assigned to protect the queen. when alina comes into the picture she helps turn alina against the darkling because she loves chaos, thinks it’s funny, and thinks they’ll destroy each other or at least one of them will take care of the other enough for her to deal with whoever is left standing. she genuinely wants to make ravka a better place so no grisha child goes through what she did — her whole family were killed off one by one as a kid by and she saw her parents brutally murdered — but she like the darkling she goes about in a way that’s … questionable. she’s very evil and manipulative i love her sm.
