The kloborg brotp ask thinggg continuesss, this time its a tricky question namely "did you ever think you'd end your friendly disagreement with a... loving unity?" (a pun on how its a brotp in my posts and also a suggestion to bring it to the next level. but im afraid Hoborg doesnt take things this way)

(Hoborg is sitting at the Pin Island next to Klogg who seems to be chilling. Hoborg holds a yellow letter; these are used to pass the question to characters in these askblog posts. Most of the stuff that follows is told by Hoborg off-screen in his thoughts, so it's not all vocal but text still belongs to him.)

Hoborg: I'm not sure if I understood your question correctly but... I'm afraid you'll be disappointed with my answer. The thing is, I already do love him. But unity in such things is needed from both sides, no? I can't make him love me back, that's just cruel! I can't even make him feel sympathy towards me, it goes against what I've put into my creations... They have to choose on their own what they like and what they feel towards certain things. But even if I can't make Klogg do everything I want... I still have some responsibility before those I've created. They need to have at least someone to rely upon. Someone to love them for simply existing! At the end I've made myself friends to make it all less lonely and I love them all... there's no other way! That's why I love him, too... even though a lot of people find him scary or annoying, he's still one of us.

(He looks over at Klogg who's making a paper plane. Then suddenly he bends over and hugs him, speaking into his shoulder.)

H: It's all gonna be alright.

Klogg: For sure, but for whom...

H: For all of us. You, me, everyone in the Neverhood. I won't leave you here all alone.

K: I kinda got used to it... eh, come on now...

(He raises a hand to either hug Hoborg back or to brush him off, but instead he just defeatedly leans into the hug, placing his chin on Hoborg's shoulder.)

Back at work, you couldn’t help but think about that absurd text conversation. It was probably just a one-time thing, but it definitely turned your whole day around. Pulling out the ingredients to make tart dough, you couldn’t help but hum to yourself. Thank you, dude.

Later that afternoon, you had finished most of your prep work for the day but chose to avoid the paperwork waiting in your office, so you told Wanda she could take a break. You loved the baking behind the scenes, but also enjoyed helping customers when you had the time.

Carrying a tray of almond croissants fresh from the oven, you grabbed a set of tongs and began restocking the empty space in the pastry case. They had sold out quickly today, which made you proud.

“Ooh, those look good,” you heard a male voice say.

Straightening up from your crouch position, you turned with a smile to greet him but instead met a familiar face. Unfortunately.

“Y/N, was it? This is a cute little shop,” Jimmy spoke, his eyes wandering around the bakery that was your pride and joy. The words were complimentary, but the way he said it made it sound condescending. Or maybe you were imagining things.

“What are you doing here?” you said, a little sharply.

“I recall that you said I should come visit this morning. Did I mishear you, or…” he trailed off with a raised eyebrow.

You fumbled with the tongs, embarrassed. “I…well, that was before…I didn’t know…” You took a deep breath and calmed your nerves. “Are you here to spy on me? Check out the competition?”

Jimmy scoffed at that. “Hardly. My father has been in business for 20 years. We’re good at what we do. Most small businesses fail within the first year, especially food establishments. He’s seen many shops come and go without any worry, so, no. I don’t think there’s any need for me to spy,” he smirked, amused at your reaction.

You couldn’t help it. Anger filled you as he all but said that you were going to fail. That you weren’t even worth considering as competition. You’ve given your heart and soul, your life’s blood into this bakery. How dare he belittle you and your business? And yet, you stood frozen with tongs in hand, unable to fire back with a witty retort in the moment.

“So. Can I get one of your almond croissants and a ganache tart, please? They’ve come highly recommended.” Jimmy continued to give that smirk that you’d love to smack right off his face.

“Of course!” you heard Wanda reply from behind you, unaware she had returned. “Do you want me to take over Y/N?”

Recovering from the unfair accusations from the man before you, all you could do was hand Wanda the tongs and slink back into the kitchen without a word. The fury returned as you paced back and forth between the workbench and shelves of ingredients opposite. There wasn’t much room to pace, but after a few passes you were fuming. You heard the jangle of bell the over the door and dared to peek out of the kitchen.

“Is he gone?” you asked in a whisper.

Wanda looked at you warily. “Yeah? Why, who was that?”

“Jimmy Barnes.”

She gasped. “As in…”

“Barnes Bakery, yup. He’s the owner’s son, back from college I guess,” you uttered, leaning heavily on the counter as all the anger left you. It was too late to reply now, anyway.

“I heard about him! I guess he has a degree in business now and wants to help out his dad. Jimmy, huh? Too bad. He was cute,” Wanda said with a shrug.

You huffed out a sigh. Of course he’s cute. He probably knows he’s cute, too. The jerk. “Um…I’ll be in back. Let me know if you need anything and I’ll come help close up in a while.”

“Mmkay,” Wanda chirped as she wiped down the counter.

Back in your office, you stared at the paperwork before you, but couldn’t get your brain to focus as thoughts tumbled. He thinks I’m destined to fail? Ugh! How dare that pretty boy with a business degree tell me that my hard work will be for nothing?

A short time later, Wanda asked for more cinnamon rolls and as you set a timer on your phone for the oven, you had a thought. A little random pick-me-up couldn’t hurt.

FG: Did dillweed ever fix the order?

Your finger hovered over the send button as you hesitated, then pressing it before you could overthink too much. Three dots appeared. Guess he hadn’t ruined his current phone just yet.

B: Yeah, he did. Had to chase him down along his delivery route, but I twisted his arm.

The three dots remained after the first message so you waited for him to finish typing.

B: Not that I don’t appreciate it, but why message me now? Weren’t you all “Stranger Danger”?

The last phrase made you smile as you let go of the events of the afternoon and chose to text this stranger once again.

FG: I am still wary of all strangers, including you. But I had a run-in with someone just now who made me want to….Well…I probably shouldn’t say. Plausible deniability. You know. I could use a distraction.

B: I can distract with the best of them. You can message me anytime. What did they do?

Chewing on your lip a moment, you figured out a general way to explain your frustration without too many details. He was still a stranger, after all.

FG: Just some uppity know-it-all who passed judgement about me and my work. Condescending ass….

B: What a dick. I’m sorry.

FG: Yeah, well. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, so his rude opinion is not at all valid.

B: That’s right! You go, girl. Or something.

By this point you were full-on grinning down at your phone, the afternoon’s events all but forgotten. Glancing at the clock, you saw that it was near closing time. You were almost sad to say goodbye, which was weird. One more message and it was time to return to reality.

FG: Thank you. What does B stand for, anyway? Brian? Bernard? Bozo the Clown?

B: *laughing emoji* I asked you first.

You chuckled at that.

FG: Touche’. I better go. Later, dude.

B: Bye, Franny.

Locking your phone, you straightened the last of your paperwork and headed up front to help Wanda. All the little cleaning tasks didn’t seem so bad as you blasted music and danced along. Crawling into bed that night, you set an early alarm and thought back on the crazy events of the day. It was quite the rollercoaster, but you were just grateful that it ended on a high note. Tomorrow was another day, you thought as you got comfortable on your pillow with a hint of a smile on your lips.

Volunteering Wales website - changing in response to your feedback

The launch of the new Volunteering wales website, back in June 2018 was a significant step forward for us in Wales. It provides a range of free tools to enable the promotion, recruitment and management of volunteers. It gives volunteers easier and more direct access to a wide range of volunteering opportunities - through their mobile phone, if they wish! Here, WCVA Volunteering Development Manager Fiona Liddell discusses the changes made in response to feedback from users.

As you might imagine, we have encountered many and various challenges since then as we, and you, have worked with the new system in our day to day work. We have been working with the developers to address many of these.

In August – September we asked users of the website what they liked about it and what could be improved. Let me tell you about two of the issues that many of you raised and what is being done about these.

Searching for opportunities

A lot of you mentioned the search function and difficulties experienced in finding specific opportunities using common search words.

The developers have introduced some major changes in the update that was released last month, which should make significant difference to the ease of search.

If you click on the search button you get to some Advance search options, with a range of filters that help to focus the search. You can search by distance from a specific location. This could be a postcode, or it could be a place name search as Anytown railway station or university. Anything that is recognised by Google place names will be recognised here.

Narrow your search by entering a distance and a named location.

Click on ‘more options’ to see more filter options, including age ranges, whether expenses are paid, or the opportunity can be carried out from home.

You can search by our 10 broad, defined categories of organisations’ area of interest, or, more usefully, by tags.

Providers can select or add tags when posting their opportunity, to include words that people might reasonably be searching for.

Close the ‘more options’ again and you’ll see down the left hand side of the page that you can also search by selecting a provider or by type of location (ie whether the opportunity can be done from anywhere or at a set location) and by activity tags. You can see next to all these options a number in brackets, which denotes how many search results have been returned for each of these filters.

I searched for ‘animals’, and found, for example, that 2 of these have been tagged ‘horses’ and two are tagged ‘sheep’.

It is still under discussion whether and how many of the advanced search options should be visible on the main page without causing visual clutter or confusion. Meanwhile just remember to click on the search button and away you go. Happy searching!

Applying or joining opportunities?

When creating opportunities you choose to make them either for ‘applying’ or ‘joining’. The terminology is unfamiliar and the implications of choosing one or the other has not been clear to many of you.

Some changes to the ‘applying’ process were introduced in the latest update which make it more flexible, allowing you to respond to volunteers on an individual basis as and when they apply (rather than choosing a closing date and dealing with all applications then, as you would in a staff appointment). The developers, in the light of feedback from us and others, have committed to a major re-working of this section, with the use of questions to determine the appropriate recruitment option, rather than requiring the Provider to choose from unfamiliar alternatives.

This will be some months down the line. Meanwhile it may be helpful to know that the software came from the world of sporting events. For some roles, (like, say, litter picking), a number of volunteers may be needed for each shift, say, maximum 5 volunteers for each of 3 sessions during a one day event. By choosing opportunity options ‘non- repeating’ (because it’s a one off event on one day) and ‘joining’ (a first come first served basis) then you can get volunteers signing up for the different sessions until you have 5 committed for each of the sessions. Hey presto! That’s the rota sorted.

For other roles, maybe some experience is needed, such as minibus drivers. By choosing ‘applying’ you can put in place a screening/ application process through the website, allowing you to consider each application in turn, view any documents, credentials, application forms, references or whatever, before confirming that the volunteer is successful or unsuccessful.

What information do volunteers get when they sign up to an opportunity?

When volunteers sign up for an opportunity (whether ‘applying’ or ‘joining’) they receive this autogenerated message:

This opportunity is provided by *|PROVIDER|*

Thank you for offering your time to volunteer. It is appreciated.

Someone from your chosen opportunity should be in touch shortly to let you know what happens next.

If you mark an individual’s application as unsuccessful, or remove them from the list of volunteers associated with a particular opportunity, for whatever reason, they will be sent this autogenerated message:

These messages have to be general so as to cover a wide range of contexts. The best advice is for you to be sure to follow up with emails to interested volunteers and to keep them in the loop about what is happening.

But our opportunities are not like this!

The options above are fine for session- based or event- based volunteering. But your opportunities may not be based around fixed time periods at all, but rather a matter for negotiation between yourselves and the volunteer.

The option for you is ‘Flexible’. Choose this for any opportunity that is not based on fixed time slots.

If you choose ‘applying’ as the method of selection, you can distinguish on line between those who are applicants awaiting a response from you and those you have accepted as volunteers. You can manage the selection process through the website, for example emailing an application form and requesting necessary information. You may hold an interview with the volunteer also, all before confirming whether or not you can accept them.

If you choose ‘joining’ then every volunteer who applies will be accepted onto your list of volunteers right away. If the opportunity is session based (‘repeating’ or ‘non-repeating’), they could just turn up. If it is ‘flexible’ they will need to hear from you about what happens next. You can still administer your own recruitment processes such as application form, interview and references but with the ‘joining’ option, you will not be using the website to manage that selection process.

The best advice here is for you to be clear in the opportunity description, what the recruitment process entails.
