does reading a whole classical novel to reference it in a fic once or twice count as weird research?

I'm sure I've researched weirder, but I rarely think twice about looking up historical accuracy of certain objects, so it's not a weird thing for me. there's probably weirder but a recent example was when I spent a whole evening reading up on how late Victorian/Edwardian funerals worked, traditions and processions and military funerals and proper length of mourning and attire and number of cannon shots to be fired when a military official passes. again. nothing special really

it ranges from 1 to 10, depending on my mood. there are times when I find it painful, especially when I know I Need to edit it, but sometimes it's a joy cause damn, reading a fic and the author knows exactly what I enjoy in fiction? epic, lemme just change the word here and fix the tenses.

#i shant lie i wasnt very hype for the new game but now I've got like 30+ hours in it already #it's such a pretty game. it's definitely not perfect but i think it expands on a lot of #what i liked about the 2009 game but also learned from that game's mistakes #but... i might also be biased because the plot is so reminiscent of like... maul LOL #and the game has like a set of names you can choose for your ikran and i kid you not #one of the names is “amay” #you know... like am'ayru #(my HC birth name for maul) #so obviously i chose to make my ikran red+black+yellow and named it amay #and the player character even pronounces Amay the same way I've been pronouncing it in amayru in my head this whole time LOL #i wasn't gonna buy this game bc it's stupid expensive but then i found out u can get it for super cheap by just subbing to ubisoft+ #or whatever it's called #and since the game is singleplayer (there's a coop mode but like... w/e) i dont think I'll be playing it for more than a few weeks at most #so i dont mind losing access to it after a month #i feel like not making this game an mmo is a missed opportunity... i know mmos are expensive to develop but they've got #a crazy big map already that easily could be expanded on. they've got crafting and resource collecting #they've got a clan favor system etc etc etc and a ton of side missions #some of which could be turned into coop operations/raids with minor tweaks #they're even trying to sell skins which is like???? very questionable in a first person singleplayer game #the character customization is also a funny choice here #but idk i was pleasantly surprised by this game

leah's entire story!!! yeah it's problematic and fucked up from both in and out of universe perspectives but it means that she's a character full of so much FUN AND JUICY POTENTIAL. also I just enjoy when characters have a bad time, especially if I like that character. but I'm not exactly horrified that I like this. nor am I ashamed of anything in this series that I like, but that's as close as we're getting without touching the jasper stuff tbh

if the volturi want alice or edward—which, lets be clear here: they 100% do—then jasper and bella HAVE to end up dead at some point. there's no realistic alternative. sometimes I wonder if anyone read breaking dawn; as weird as the entire book is (in addition to everyone's characterization) it just proves that bella needs to be dead for the volturi to confidently to rule in actual 'peace'. in what world would aro want a gift that can nullify his and his entire guards'? sometimes I read fics where they're like "aro wants her soooo bad" yeah, wants her head on a pike.

UMMmmmm i think there are a lot of funny bits in film studies but i still feel weird about talking about that one (sometimes i regret coming off anon ahaha) so idk i guess if you know you know. Specifically theres a bit about Hakka giving Bettel memory loss after beaning him with one of his giant platform geta that i choose to believe is canon behavior.

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

when i realized I used the same "empty, brittle seashell" analogy twice, like two years apart, I felt like such a hack I wanted to walk into traffic. If i do it once more, I can make it a signature motif. Im setting a reminder to bring it up again in two more years.

Once a long time ago there was a blue engine named Edward. Edward was a medium sized tender engine who worked on the island of Sodor. Edward was a cheerful sort who worked hard. However he was old and not as strong as the others. He lived in the sheds five other engines. They were all bigger and stronger then him.

Edward would sit in the shed while the other engines boasted about being bigger and stronger.

"The driver won't choose you again Edward." Gordon remarked. "He wants big and strong engines like us."

"I can pull passengers Gordon I'm not that old."

"Edward," Henry chimed in. "You haven't moved in months. Maybe even years."

"Oh shut up!" Came a young voice as a blue tank engine with six small wheels, A short stumpy funnel, A short stumpy boiler, and a short stumpy dome pulled alongside the shed. " I swear you two just love to hear yourself speak!"

Gordon scoffed. "You keep your mouth shut little Thomas. You privately owned moungral."

"Why you-!!"

"That's enough you two." Edward said.

"I swear you big engines are the definition of big headed."

"Be quiet Thomas." Snapped James.

"Your the reason I get boiler ache." Henry said.

"Oh simply get a better boiler Henry it's not my fault you can't be useful for anything in life."

Everyone but Henry laughed a bit before heading off to work. All except Edward. Edward sat in the shed throughout the fall, winter, and into the spring. He waited patiently though. One day he received quite the surprise. The doors to his birth opened slowly to reveal a man in a drivers uniform.

"Oh, hello." The man said before noticing Edward's frown. "Why are you sad?" He asked. He thought for a moment. "Would you... Like to come out today?"

Gordon, James, Henry, and Edward gasped.

"Yes sir. Please!" Edward said his voice filled with joy.

"I like the enthusiasm!" The man said. "Lets get you steamed up!"

Soon Edward was simmering nicely and his boiler was warm. The driver opened the regulator and he puffed out of the sheds.

"Look at me he called!" As Thomas whistled in support.

Edward gently puffed into the yards and picked up a line of coaches. The coaches whispered in excitement.

"Well done old boy!" Called his driver as the raced down the line. He smoothly puffed along with the coaches singing.

"We're coming along we Shant be late! We're coming along we Shant be late!"

Edward felt the wind hitting his face and his whistle blow as he passed many people waving along the side of the line. Edward enjoyed every minute of it.

That night Edward backed into the shed where the others waited.

"Enjoy your day out Edward?" Gordon asked.

"Why I did Gordon."

"Yeah well don't expect it to become a regular thing." He said.

"Oh really?" Edward said with a smirk. "Driver said I did so well he's taking me out tomorrow." Edward smiled as Gordon tried to think of a response.

But he would never be able to say it. Edward was so tired he fell asleep while James and Henry chuckled at Gordon.

okayyy this is actually an error of fact but i've read quite a few fics that assume "agni" is the sun (think "agni's rays were shining upon her" vel sim). but agni is the hindu god of fire. the sun is surya.
