It didn’t dawn on me until a few days after Stranger Things part 2 of season 4 aired that it dawned on me.....I had an Eddie when I was in high school. No seriously, his actual name was Eddie. No joke. I was 16 I think. Maybe 17. He was a year or so older. He went to a French school, I went to the only English HS in town. We all took the same bus though. 45 min ride every am. Driver didn’t mind his heavy metal tapes. As long as we were behaving, she didn’t care what we listened to. That’s how I started liking metal. Dio. Judas Priest. Anthrax. Metallica. Sabbath. Ozzy. Eddie sat a bench ahead of who I thought was my ‘socially acceptable’ crush. The one everyone in school thought was awesome. Our school’s Steve Harrington. He let it go to his head though. I always wanted Eddie. He’d touch my hand sometimes as I walked by his seat, heading for my bench, the before last seat in the back. The one that didn’t shake that much cuz you were one seat behind the back tires. Then I’d try to calm my heart down cuz it felt like it would pound right out of my chest. I’d look at him over the seats, 4 seats away, leaning against the side of the bus with his long legs stretched out across the bench/seat like we all did. He’d give me a slight grin. So slight so others barely noticed but I knew & would give him the same one. (Knowing my face, I probably just looked like an idiot newbie dear caught in the headlights reaction on my face). If ‘Steve’ noticed, he would look back at me, wondering what Eddie was staring at...and whyyyy. I wasn’t exactly one of the popular or pretty girls. Or one of the smart ones. Or athletic. I was an oddball. Trying desperately to fit in with the pretty, athletic, popular girls that I hung out with. He sold pot, had a leather jacket with pins on it, smoked, had long brown shaggy hair & looked like every parent’s 80’s nightmare. I loved it. I didn’t care for drugs, smoked occasionally, dressed like a prep & tried to be a ‘goodie goodie’ as they used to call it. A good girl. Whatever. I wasn’t a bad kid but it was the 80’s and parents never really knew what their kids did. I would have loved to have seen him outside of the bus. In a different setting. I daydreamed about what it’d be like. In Quebec, the drinking age is 18. So with someone else’s ID (pre-pix on health cards) I went for a couple beers one wknd with a few of the older girls I hung out with. If I told you how many ppl were shocked seeing me, probably the entire back of the bar where they played pool. Several that didn’t like me. The nerd. Wtf is she doing here? I could see it on their faces. Then I saw Eddie in the corner, waiting for his next shot. Nodded his head at me so I smile. Slightly. I think it turned out more like a smirk. Did I just flirt?? Cool. Tried to make it back to the table without tripping or looking like a dumbass. No one knew I liked him. Omg I’d never have heard the end of it. Not that I was Clare from Breakfast Club. At ALL. But it’s like an unspoken rule in school. Don’t date above your social status and definitely don’t date below it. I knew I’d never date above it. ‘Steve’ would only give me the time of day when no one else was around. I knew better & took what he said or did with a big grain of salt. (The rest of my group owes me $20 each. They know why). One wknd, it was just me & another girlfriend. She was like one of the guys. Easy to get along with. And open up to. We ended the night with ‘Steve’ & Eddie at our table drinking pitchers of draft, sharing smokes & not much of a crowd but I definitely didn’t want to leave yet. I was petrified I would say something that would make me look like an idiot. I probably did. All mouth & bravado. I had perfected the smirk and had added in the eyebrow I became famous for lol. He liked it and others joked that the quiet one had attitude, ‘who knew’. Wore it like a suit when I went out. I got comfortable in it. (Still like it. But now it’s real.) This scenario happened a few times. Drove around with ‘Steve’ & Eddie a bunch of times that summer in his black beat up Trans Am. Pt 1
