typically i don’t talk about the gifs that i make for myself but i am in a chatty mood so we’re have a socratic seminar right now.

also, before i get started, you can use these headers if you’d like! literally everything you see on this blog are freebies tbh. just a forewarning that the cas one is not the standard 640 px width because i was experimenting with something so just...be mindful of that <3 no need to credit unless you feel inclined to! just know i spent...quite awhile on them xx

i get most of my ideas for spn gif headers by seeings gifs on the tl that make me go “you know what? this would make for a great header” and run with that. i do pray that the op put the season and episode in the tags and if they don’t...SHH don’t laugh but if i’m desperate enough, i actually go through the tags to see if any hardcore stan knows the exact szn/ep. other times, i write some scenes down in my journal that i think would be great but again, those written down are definitely from scenes i saw in gifsets. call me unoriginal idc i’m just making things that make me happy and i know would be hella sexy.

let’s talk about how fucking LONG it takes to down/load an episode of supernatural like....i deadass spent five hours downloading plucky pennywhistle’s magical menagerie and around three hours to download the man who would be king....is it just best to t/orrent the whole ass season or WHAT like i’m deadass about to do that for any spn gifs i wanna make because that ajsdajksldjksla RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY. i’m not even that mad like it humbles me and it shows how dedicated i am to the craft. if anybody has tips for t/orrenting old spn episodes, please hmu because i would like to make more content in the future but this is a big hurdle on why i hesitate to create content for this show (among other things BUT this is one of the biggest reasons). you could have the fastest wifi speed the world has to offer pero if that bitch has no seeds...

for the castiel header: i had three different colorings for him. i really wanted to bring out his eyes because that is what drew me to make the header in the first place. y’all know that as a gifmaker, i really like making my gifs warmer and using pale/aesthetic coloring is so out of my wheelhouse and not my forte...but i do try to branch out of my comfort zone. back to the eyes, i went through a lot of psds, tinkering with their settings, and came out with three of them: the warm one that i did end up using and two pale-ish ones. the other third one isn’t here because i ultimately determined that it’s basically this one here but a lot lighter. the coloring made cas almost a ghost so i’m like...we still need to keep SOME of his skin tone even if it’s a lack thereof...okay, the reason why that this one doesn’t have the typical 640 px dimension is because i wanted to keep...how do i say this...i wanted to keep some of his facial structure? because the scene is really focused on cas’ face so it’s the entire frame. because tumblr is the way it is, it cuts at a weird spot where he looks like that bitch from doctor who all stretched out. so in an attempt to prevent that, i made it in this dimension where it’s basically me free handing the crop but ultimately it didn’t do anything lol. so i basically went back and made an entirely new gif with one of the colorings i saved and ta-da!

for the sam header: going in, i knew it was going to be a dark lit scene. i knew i had specific spn colorings that have been useful for shows outside of supernatural so i was like...i mean, tried and true, eh? i went through about six colorings until i finally settled on like...four. the first two of the six, though colorful, really made sam’s skin a bit...washed out. the next two were...basic. one of those basic coloring was the dark spn coloring and though it looked okay, there wasn’t any flavor to it. if i can be colorful in a gif, i will definitely climb up that tree. i love and admire vibrant gifs so if i can do that, oh man, it’s such a fun feeling because it’s like WOW i actually did that! then there were two colorings that were really, REALLY good because one of them was vibrant but it also had a subtlety to the gif. the other one was vibrant and brought out the blue in the background. it was a hard decision but i did save both of them and was like well, this is a problem for future me. i was actually surprised that the glitter on sam’s jacket and shirt didn’t up the mb because it definitely had me worried there. i also thought about making this gif header as another scene but realized it was a little too short for my liking (it was when he was surrounded by clowns but they magically disappear into thin air, leaving glitter in their wake). really love how this gif turned out :)

and yeah, that’s all i got to say about them. everything went smoothly with the sharpening, no problems on that front...i thought about opening up my inbox for suggestions of what scenes i should gif pero i’m afraid that 1) nobody will respond, 2) i will get some strange requests, or 3) i will get a lot of them. i would love to create more but i am like..creatively stuck. i don’t typically make those fancy edits with templates, i am more of a practical gifmaker aka i just stick to the original material. who knows...maybe i’ll be pushed and motivated...thanks for taking the time to read this !!

Day 3: Hanoi to Halong Bay/ Lan Ha Bay

I still can’t sleep to the alarm which is set for 7 but Kerran can. So instead I wake at 6 and make my first blog post you saw a few days ago. At 7:15 we tie up our running shoes and do 3 laps around the lake. We run slow at around 8:30 miles, but the air is thick with humidity and I’m just getting back to running shape. In fact, I may be getting slight shin splints. I’m impressed we’ve now run twice on vacation and it’s nice to go together.

After showering and packing up a bit we head to breakfast. No Vietnam English newspaper today. I was enjoying that as it’s interesting to see how people who love hear view the world. There is far more articles about small European countries and happenings. Obviously there’s more about Vietnam to, like an upcoming visit from the Dutch PM (I think?) and how they can learn more about climate change practices etc from them.

Kerran manages to have half the menu for breakfast—an egg muffin, an omelet, baguette toast, one of my hard boiled eggs, muesli, yogurt, fruit, donuts. I can run on an empty tummy so I’ve had a ONE bar already (the peanut butter ones are delicious) that I’ve brought from home. I have some tea, a hard boiled egg and a small dish of cornflakes to get me through lunch. I am loving the portion sizes (though they aren’t always small!!). Kerran clearly loves breakfast. Me, I’d prioritize dessert, but I’m sure that doesn’t surprise anyone!

At 9:15 we meet Tsoi for our two hour drive to halong bay. As always, Kerran dozes off while I stare at the green landscape and draft these posts. It reminds me of how my mom would doze off between animal sitings when we went on Safari. There is an unimaginable amount of construction on the outskirts of Hanoi. At one site alone there are probably thousands upon thousands of apartments being constructed for the ever expanding population and more cranes than either of us have ever seen in one place!

We arrive at the new port, it’s nothing like the serene photos you see in Pinterest. It’s a pretty gross site with makeshift offices, containers, and cranes. It’s industrial. Four couples sit in the waiting room for Heritage Cruise line’s Ginger boat. I play a game with myself guessing where they are from. (I got two of three correct—Quebec and Connecticut)

The 8 of us take a small boat equipped with big bright orange life vests for a short speed boat trip to the Ginger. We take the grand stair case to the third floor dining room where were briefed by Min, one of the staff, on safety and the jam-packed program ahead. We unpack in our Junior Suite which is quite large (and beautiful) for a boat. The boat itself is a new build, it’s been out for about a year or so and it’s stunning. At lunch we’re joined by a tour group from Canada. Lunch is absolutely beautifully presented, and it’s a multi course meal of sea food—soup, salad, spring rolls, a main and dessert. Luckily portions are small so I can taste it all.

As we make our way around Cat Ba archipelago, the scenery is more and more stunning with karst “mountains” reaching 50-100m on all sides. The limestone makes the water a beautiful green. We pass an old lighthouse which is more house line in actuality, while we eat. While the area is famous for Halong Bay, we are actually on the adjacent Lan Ha Bay which has the same scenery, fewer tourists, less garbage and some surviving house boats.

Our first stop is on Cat Ba island, the second largest island of Vietnam and the largest in this archipelago. There are 367 islands in the archipelago. Our guide tells us that Cat Ba means “women’s land.” We sail about 3/4 around it and take our smaller motorized shuttle boat to Viet Hai, a small village on the south east coast. In fact, Viet Hai means “Vietnamese who live in the sea.” Here we get on beach cruiser bikes for a short 3k ride to Tai Lai town. We pass goats, cows, farms, and of course limestone. When we arrive in town, our guide gives us a short lesson. She tells us that about 10,000 people live on Cat Ba, mostly in Cat Ba Town. There are about 1000 people in floating houses. In this town there are 300-400 residents but many are not there now—some are off fishing and those who are in secondary school are at a boarding school in Cat Ba Town, which is about 45 minutes away by boat. We learn that Cat Ba has one small hospital in town, staffed by nurses and no doctors. For this reason, the locals of this village tend to gravitate toward natural medicines.

Up until 10 years ago this village did not have electricity and relied on batteries and generators. Until 2-3 years ago there was no tourism. Tourism has provided more economic opportunity for this small village.

We walk around the village starting with the burial sites, where families are buried together. Here it’s custom that three years after a parents death the oldest son will dig up the body, clean the bones and then rebury the bones. (I’m really glad we don’t have this custom). Lychee trees are planted nearby the graves as they believe that ghosts are attracted to the fruit and that by planting these trees the ghosts stay away from the homes.

We walk through the garden where peanuts are growing, as well as Papaya trees, green beans etc. Mai, our guide also informed us about the native animals here—the Black Kite or small sea hawk that we see from the boat and the Langurs and Gibbons like we saw in the rescue center yesterday. The Cat Ba white headed langur is one of the top 25 most endangered primates in the world and lives only on Cat Ba—it has been here since the island separated from the mainland due to tectonic activity. There are about 60 left on the island. The island itself is a National Park that protects the langurs but prior to this they were hunted because many believed their brains and bone had medicinal properties. Unfortunately we don’t see any primates today.

We do meander our way to a local home where a man is chopping a tree endemic to Car Ba island. It’s believed to have medicinal properties like Keri g away cancer and is evidently good for your health. They use it to make tea. We also see how they ferment their own rice wine—a little jarring to see what we’d use for gasoline to make wine! We get to try some of the tea and the rice wine which is surprisingly not so bad. Kerran is the only one out of all 24 of us brave enough to taste the snake rice wine!

We bike back to the small port and board the Ginger again and have just enough time to freshen up before a cooking demonstration. This is probably the only time I’ll blow dry my hair the whole trip and it feels so luxurious. The ridiculous heat and humidity of Vietnam has otherwise confined my hair to a pony tail. This is the first time I’ve seen my hair frizz in ages!

Before dinner a small group of us attend the cooking demonstration where they are making green papaya and shrimp salad (Kerran has beef). They use so many herbs and spices which explains the delicious and complex flavorings. The salad itself has green mango, jicama, shredded carrot and cucumber, onion, mint, cilantro and more. The dressing has sweet chili sauce, chilis, fish sauce (always!), sugar, garlic, rice vinegar. We get hands on and learn to plate and sprinkle our creations with peanuts and sesame.

Dinner is more meat based and not quite as good as lunch was but still tasty. After dinner we try our hand at squid fishing (and fail) but see some cute butterfly looking fish (dragon fish?). There is a screening of Top Gear’s Vietnam episode which I manage to catch some (but not all) of as I’m getting so sleepy! Upon return to our room there are ginger (of course!) chocolates on our pillows. Within moments I’m asleep, managing to clock a full 8 hours for the first time this trip!

I should write more often already because this way I get my fingers all nicely warmed up. Can’t complain though, I cannot remember when Estonia had this crispy cold winters with huge snowpiles up to your bellybutton. At least inside it is so nice to be mesmerized by the rising sun rays over sparkling snow fields, all while curled up under a blanket with a hot cup of coffee. Not really into spending more  than half an hour outside with this cold, as my skii trousers have mysteriously disappeared after not needing them for years.

After those coffee and meditation mornings I have a whole hour to enjoy online fitness classes held by all of my favourite trainers. So thankful they have released online platform. Yes, Youtube channels for work outs are good, but they cannot even comprehend with community and people I have worked out with for years.

Oh, I love Fridays. Mostly because, of course, it marks the end of the workweek and all the stress load on my shoulder gets a decent relief. The end of last year started to go crucially out of hands regarding to work hours. I believed I am extra productive and a good asset for the company with my over-hours after 6 PM, and weekends when I assisted translators with their issues, replied to clients’ and colleagues’ e-mails; I started my workdays right after waking up at 7 AM. I felt so proud. That until I got a note that I have spent shorter AFK periods in our office communication platform and I should work more harder, and that I have to stay available all the time. I awarded myself with a few longer and frequent stretching moments away from keyboards so I wouldn’t completely lose my mind. That comment made me realize that my over-hours benefited no one and they will be left unnoticed. So from this moment on I stayed strictly in my official office hours. And it has paid off at maximum. I am more productive and motivated, more enthusiastic. At the end of the year the times were extremely busy and I was overflown with work, burning out was only a stretch away, but following the working hours and taking mandatory lunch breaks every day made it all synchronize and it went so well. This week was overally satisfying as the corona restrictions are being eased bit by bit. For example, gyms and fitness classes are again back in business. This means that finally I can get back to one of my primary passions, instructing BodyBalance classes. Every Tuesday and Wednesday I have my BodyBalance classes, Wednesdays being my favourite as then, I have my favourite people in front of me and I realized this week, how much I missed it. I have always thought that I am quite good at coaching, but this Wednesday I got an ultimate compliment that as soon as I step into instructor role, I transform completely into someone else: I glow, am confident, cheerful. This side of me can rarely be seen in other moments. I guess this shows that working as a trainer is an ultimate passion. Sad though that I cannot spread it wider. I try of course. Before initial corona crisis I was almost through the door to Estonia’s biggest fitness club MyFitness. Anyway, this compliment sparked such an inspiring fire in me that I think I performed my best class ever. The energy I get from these hours are crucially needed. For several evenings now I have silly-danced through our rooms, singing loudly to all the pop songs I hear; made silly jokes. And just laughed and laughed. I cannot remember when was the last time I laughed truly from the bottom of my heart so that tears were in my eyes.

One of my goals for this year was picking up a new hobby. For my surprise, I started to follow this goal so early in this year. I got invited to join a workshop for crafting earrings from clay. I am not that artsy and crafty, with a small exception of drawing, in which I am still a complete newbie. Usually I am always excited when an opportunity like this presents itself, but when the actual time comes to show up, I bail. Not this time, I told myself and went for it. Working with clay was a totally unfamiliar area for me, except that one time when I made a really weird looking coffee mug in one of the clay workshops. God forbid I ever show this to anyone...

Anyway, the workshop was the bomb! There were 20 people, most of them already quite experience with clay crafting. I felt really self-aware and awkward but when I got my hands on the first small piece of multicolour clay which I soon crafted into two tiny hearts, I felt so calm. It was like an art therapy. Two hours later I waltzed out with 3 pairs of earrings in my hand. Those butterfly wings came out silly-looking as if the poor butterfly were mauled by a cat or something. But I got an excitement to actually pick it up myself, so I should buy some colour clay, moulds and decorations. Look at me, being all spiritual artsy self-developer ‘n stuff

As it’s Friday, I stepped onto the scale this morning. A decent 500g drop in weight, which made me feel quite neutral, and thus I continued my morning without thinking about it. I am not sure where this complete peace with my weight came, so suddenly, but I feel so free. True, few  times a week these demons still haunt me, especially when That Time of the Month is lurking nearby and even a slice of cucumber makes me feel I am fat, but I understand almost instantly that this is just a silly evil entity in my brain, trying to stab me with its knives. This does not make me feel any pain anymore, rather just an annoying poke which I forget almost instantly. There is so much more than that in life, not related to the random number on my scale. I feel strong and more confident than I have felt in years. I am so grateful that I am not a lonely slave to mind anymore, that I have someone I can rely on, that I have a roof over my head, seriously fulfilling healthy foods on my table and a stable working opportunity that does not seem to shrink in its scope anytime soon. Everything else is an additional bonus and my gut is telling me things will get even better.

Ah, right, one of the highlights of this week was me finally getting my long-missed new running steeds: Nike Air Pegasus Shield 37. The only running shoe model which makes me feel like I run on clouds and makes the running even in the craziest monsoons feel like a stroll in the park no matter the temperature outside. I have not yet tested them out yet though, as the roads are insanely slippery and Coach Bennet from NRC is stressing out the strict rule not to run on ice. Thus, I have taken some off-time from running and instead continuing the oh-so amazing workouts from  Netfit. Old version of me would have probably drowned in the pool of tears from regrets of not running, but current me doesn’t let it bring me down. I am so active with other things and this is more than enough. Who knows, perhaps the longer break from running actually brings back the long-lost passion for it and kick-starts the activity with a fresh energy.

Now, about food. The second week is almost over filled with foods that I used to fear and now make me happy instead. My morning indulgent is a breakfast with overnight oats that I have tuned up to taste as delicious as ever. Yesterday lunch I got a sudden craving for fresh berry smoothie so I think I made the best smoothie ever out of strawberries, bananas, cinnamon and ginger. The ratio was so on point. Smoothie was also one of my fear foods: is liquid, filled with carb-y calories and will not fill me up. Boy, what was wrong with me?

Yesterday I made another slow-cooker crockpot stew which has become a hero of dinners. I think my newly-discovered passion for cooking has made me test out flavours more confident and thus, this time the stew came out so good I ate Once again I’d like to say how good I physically feel. After a hearty dinner with belly nicely full, I do feel random panic shivers that I probably just gained 4 kg and everyone can see my belly twice the size it was 30 minutes ago, but this idiotic thinking disappears surprisingly fast. Most of the  time I feel that my body is happy, I have energy for the entire day from 7 AM I tip my toes onto the floor and until 11 PM when my head finally touches the pillow. Before, I had these eating-triggered depression exhaustions, when I just wanted to sleep off every lunch break,  but no, this wasn’t an option so instead, I forced myself into running and I came back, feeling even more exhausted an unhappy.

Netfit workouts in the mornings are like a nectar to my soul. I cannot remember when was the last time I truly ENJOYED my morning work-outs when I did not remind myself every second of it that I NEED to push myself to maximum because yesterday’s dinner calories must be destroyed. It’s amazing how much can your mind-set change the quality of your life.

I have a secret fear that this happiness will be a short-term break. I have had these good periods in the past as well and after a few weeks I am back in my old black corner, but I don’t know... this time I honestly feel that perhaps this here now is permanent and what if the jigsaw pieces are finally starting to come together...

Today, I actually wanted to post my 100 goals for the year. I guess next time then. Don’t want to crash Tumblr in one go.
