So there’s an Owl House game on DisneyNOW
Spoiler alert, it... kinda sucks. Which, is to be expected of an obscure mobile game that’s only exclusive to a very particular app. Still, It’s Owl House content, so I’ll take what I can get.
The game is a VERY simple 2-D platformer. You play as Luz (yes!) and you start off in a ‘hub’ that is the Owl House itself.
Tumblr media
The upper floor is where you catalogue previously-done missions so you can do them again. In a treasure chest there are really short side-quests that are updated every week. Each week, a new quest is presented with an item to get at the end that appears in the respective episode. A new episode, new quest, new item. It was actually the tenth quest for the Playground Armor that made me wonder if Episode 10 was available on DisneyNOW, and lo and behold, it was! So that’s neat. Each item has a little description added to it, and I played the game so nobody else has to. For example;
Tumblr media
Obviously the canonicity of this game and its descriptions should be taken with a grain of salt, but if it IS true, then I find it cute how Amity is so obsessed with that star when nobody else cares. To her, that’s literal physical validation from a teacher she looks up to! Obviously there’s something concerning about putting THAT much stock into what grown-ups have to say, but still. Also it just occurred to me that since Willow left the Abomination Track, that means that Amity is now the best student in that class once more, meaning she eventually got back her badge. So, good for her.
Believe it or not, the app itself has ACTUAL voice acting from the official VAs and everything! And I’m fairly certain the lines are unique, they’re too smooth to have been put together from various words plucked out of context from the show itself. So far we’ve only got Luz, King, Eda, and a generic Emperor’s guard as characters.
Initially, you start off controlling Luz, who can only move around, jump, duck, etc. You go through a level and hop over enemies (which look like this in Bonesborough, or like this in the forest);
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s also an arm that swipes at you from a barrel and a fanged treasure chest, but they’re super-easy to avoid. Spoiler alert; These levels are EXTREMELY easy. Also, all of the levels are just the same exact rooms and layouts, but slightly remixed so that if you go to the end of one room, you’ll go to a different room after it than last time, or start off in a different room than in the previous level... You get the idea. It’s the exact same level layout, down to the placement of enemies and smaller items you have to collect multiple of in order to advance. Because every level is the same, it definitely gets a bit tedious.
Also, the music- There’s only ONE song, and it’s a tiny snippet cut out from the show’s OST and put on loop indefinitely. Within the context of the original song it was taken from, this piece is fine. But when it’s been completely cut off from the original song and looped on repeat it quickly becomes maddening and you only realize how much it bothers you until AFTER it bothers you.
Like I said, the quests are simple. You start off going through a couple of rooms before you grab Eda’s arm... Then her leg in the next level... And then her entire body, humorously enough. For the body segment it’s a flying level where you avoid slow, flying enemies as you ride on Owlbert and tap the screen to go up a little, otherwise you’re just slowly sinking into oblivion. It’s a welcome change of pace with different music for once, but then it ends all too quickly.
Other levels involve you collecting 8 key items scattered throughout the level to accomplish a goal (getting Eda’s merch to sell it, collecting stuff for a guard, etc.) The way the level is structured, the rooms just keep going on until you collect 8 items, so... You can’t really ‘miss’ an item and there’s no correct way or order to do it. Again, it’s really mundane. Also, you can only get hurt by running into enemies (jumping on them to stun them is fine) or by falling into pits, the latter of which puts you at the beginning of the room. You lose one of four light-ball lives, but said lives are scattered all over the game for you to replenish so no-biggie. In the forest there are spotted mushrooms you can bounce off of, and early into the game you can grow a rising platform-plant in select spots. Likewise you get a pair of shoes with tiny bat-wings (but not in the actual gameplay itself, only on the picture when you receive them) that lets you double-jump;
Tumblr media
(These are a reference to the winged-shoes that Boscha and her group wear in Episode 8, although Luz’s shoes never get these bat-wing additions in the episode itself. I doubt they will in the show since this is pretty much a gameplay mechanic, but you never know!)
You also get a snaggleback shell to deal with enemies, but you never get the chance to use it? More on that later.
After completing the fetch-8 quests twice in a row, you then get a brief mini-game where you have to drag and toss human merch from your table to a wave of customers who have the corresponding speech bubble asking for it. You satisfy one customer, they go away and more appear. This goes for a bit until the mini-game ends, and then you go home.
But! You left King behind and when you go back to Bonesborough, an Emperor’s guard has taken King hostage! King is dozing off the entire time, I should mention. You do a fetch-8 ingredients quest twice for the guard, and then grab a pot he needs to cook his soup... And after THAT, he reveals that he’s planning to cook King!
And then... nothing.
At this point, you have two options; Go to the left and hit the edge of the screen, OR go right, initiating the guard’s line about cooking King... And then the conversation ends and you turn away to indicate this. That’s it. You don’t get one of the dialogue options from Luz. This doesn’t kickstart a level. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t go back to the hub? You’re just trapped in this brief between-levels moment. You can’t use the snaggleback shell, in part because the game never tells you how to use it... You’re just stuck there for all eternity as the guard gloats about cooking King but then never does that while you stand there.
Is the game glitched? Is it just... NOT finished? I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s not exactly very compelling. The main thing that keeps it from being a legitimate slog is the fact that it’s A) Owl House content and B) Each Level is so small, quick, and an easy breeze that you can clear it pretty quickly. Unfortunately for me, playing the game causes my phone to heat up REALLY quickly, so I have to take breaks so my device doesn’t overheat and damage itself. Maybe if I play on a non-mobile device I’ll be able to actually continue.
There’s not really much else to say about it. The game is the most bare-bones 2-D platformer with the bare-minimum of repeating level design and pretty mind-numbing, generic quests. You earn EXP or whatever for your witch rank at the end of each quest, but you don’t really level up? Honestly I’m only here for the surprisingly-smooth animations of Luz running and jumping around, the voice-acting, and getting to see backgrounds from the show. Also the relic side-quests are neat too, I guess, and those are even shorter than the ‘main quest’ levels.
Honestly I’d give the game a 1/10. It’s only a 1 and not a zero because it’s still Owl House content and not TOO much of a chore because thankfully you get through it quickly.

Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E43 (December 4, 2018)
Tonight’s episode features Marisha Ray and Travis Willingham!
Tumblr media
Announcements for tonight:
New Pumat shirt! Matt and Taliesin will also be playing some Fortnite with a Pumat voice pack. As you do.
#EverythingisContent stream tomorrow at 4PM Pacific: games on the all-new MAME cabinet!
Travis’ FPS stream will be happening next week!
Travis strongly recommends tuning in right at the start of the episode on Thursday. Right at the start. You and all your friends. Don’t miss it. There’s a sneak preview of some sort of animation!
Check out Gil Ramirez’s (an amazing smith, but also of “don’t fuck me Gil” fame) kickstarter!
Stats!
This episode had more spells cast than any previous episode: 76.
3rd time Beau has attempted to Extort Truth, and the 2nd time it’s succeeded.
Fjord has used four potions, all administered to other people. Brian: “For as much as you like swallowing... potions, not so much.”
Fjord has just passed Molly’s natural 20 count, reaching 26. Beau still sits at the top, with 49.
Travis and Marisha agree that this was one of their top five episodes of the show.
Fjord “totally dug” Caleb’s call to go with Wall of Flame to bring the situation with Avantika to a head. He points out that they’d had a conversation about keeping this whole situation in check if need be.
Brian: “You sound like McCree’s drunk uncle.”
The group planned (”we obsessed”) over the game for the entire two weeks, hundreds and hundreds of messages. It pretty much went according to plan. Marisha: “We had contingency plans. We had an ideal initiative, but we were like, if we fuck up, then Nott will take the journal. We had main roles and then understudies.”
Fjord thinks being able to summon demons is pretty much in line with all the weird shit that’s happened to him up to this point. He hasn’t even considered the consequences. Marisha: “I feel like that’s this entire mission. We’ll consider the consequences later.”
During the “I... wait” scene, Brian and Dani were yelling at their TVs, Travis was trying to telepathically communicate, and Marisha had complete tunnel-vision. She knew that if she’d fucked that up, they would have all died. She turned to Travis after Beau got up there and realized, “It’s just me and my words.”
Gif of the Week: the executive goth approves of Fjord’s demon-summoning! Henry models the prize:
Tumblr media
Travis gets asked why Fjord slipped into his real voice when yelling that Caleb needed help. Travis pleads the Fifth: “My what?”
Marisha had no idea her mention of the Cobalt Soul would carry so much weight with the Plank King. It was a last-ditch effort after Fjord’s diplomacy fell flat with him. Travis desperately wants to know how much of what Beau said was true.
Brian: “Only Mercer could make Plank King cool again... Planking? Remember?” There is a brief threat of mutiny in the studio. It’s a Tuesday.
Matt mentioned to Marisha that, if Avantika had been allowed to speak, she would’ve called for a trial. Things could’ve gone very wrong for the Nein.
Out-of-context quote of the night: Dani: “Can you fit a puppy in your pocket?” Travis: “Yes, I’m enormous.”
Beau is surrounded by people who can do all sorts of absurd magic, “so of course she’s like, ‘Yeah, I can punch the shit out of you. I’ll start a fucking fight to do it!’”
Travis isn’t working with anything custom for his class, apart from the sword. Brian: “So your gag reflex is right out of the Handbook?” Travis: “That and personal experience.”
Travis on Fjord’s reaction to Avantika’s death: “All great stories are laced with truth. That fucked me up, because I hadn’t realized until that point that if she’s toast, I won’t get to ask her questions.” Not to mention the whole island having reactions to Vandren’s name. “I went back and watched it twice. The ritual, the tattoos, how she found her sphere, all of that shit, I’m feeling more like I knew less of the man than I thought I knew, and she knew more about him than I ever did. It’s fucking me up.”
Fanart of the Week: “I... wait.”
Marisha on Avantika’s very sudden death: “You know how things happen, and you go, wow, I should’ve seen that coming...” The outcome of the first plan was just to get her arrested, and then the fight happened, so she wasn’t thinking about immediate repercussions. She was expecting an arrest, and maybe she’d get executed after they left, but “I mean... that was brutal.” Travis: “It just kept escalating, and then she kept saying nothing after nothing. We’re going to be front row center for this.”
Travis: “Fjord is Lawful Good, clearly--” Brian: “You’re fooling no one with that Lawful Good bullshit, Travis.” Travis: “At least 40% of the audience. Lawful Good. Clearly feels a little distressed that she had to pay with her life.” But he points out that it wasn’t the first time Fjord wanted to see her dead. “If he could’ve seen to it himself, I think he would’ve.” It’s not something he’s very practiced with, but he’s emboldened by his new abilities.
Beau was definitely intimidated by the Plank King, but still had a bit of her contempt for authority figures. “I think it set in pretty hard that she was going to be terse, she was going to be blunt, but she wasn’t going to try anything that was going to get her throat slit immediately.”
Travis hadn’t intended to start picking up pieces of lost friends as part of his identity (Molly’s sword, Vandren’s accent), but it felt like the right fit, since he’s trying to establish his identity for the first time. He’s emulating what he admires about them.
Fjord’s in his early 30s. Beau’s in her early 20s. Playing Beau younger than Marisha lets her give Beau a little extra room for development; it also makes sense with her backstory. For Fjord, he was old enough to have mostly figured out what he was doing... and then everything changed.
Travis: “Fjord saw in Vandren a leadership that empowers people to rise in their station.” It’s about the team succeeding, not one person gaining more power. He’s constantly trying to put people in different situations for success.
Fjord is very attached to this group, but he’s also uncomfortable with how much attention is starting to be put on him. His whole survival mechanism is based on blending in, and being pushed to the front and being forced to make decisions is hard for him (Travis: “And me.”). Fjord is loving everything that’s been happening. The world’s never been richer or more exciting, and he wants to protect that if he can.
Brian: “Are you preparing for when things are as Beau-focused as they are... Fjord-focused right now?” No pun intended. Beau: “It’s a horror that you cannot prepare for. One day Matt will just introduce an NPC and he’s going to look at you and he’s going to be like, ‘Hello, Beau,’ and I’m going to be like ‘AHHH’.” Travis: “The tension is palpable. It’s real.” They compliment Taliesin on his handling of the first character-centric arc in the first campaign.
Brian jokes about everyone stumbling into Yasha’s story while Ashley’s still away, so Travis would have to play her through the whole thing. Travis gives a sneak-preview of how that would go, grabbing Beau’s hand and staring deeply into her eyes.
Tumblr media
A gift for Travis from fans! He’s blown away.
Talks Machina: After Dog
Tumblr media
Essential update on Henry: he likes wearing costumes because “it feels like being hugged”. There’s talk about him doing a Grog cosplay.
Pumat impressions all around. Travis’ is, according to Marisha, “Like Grog doing a Pumat impression.” Marisha has some practice because she was the one who wrote all the Pumat promos. Travis: “Wow, that puts your Swedish accent to shame.”
Fjord and Jester? “Fjord picks up on some subtle things and some not-so-subtle things, and then probably second-guesses those things.” He’s not too sure where they stand.
Everyone’s worried about their favorite artists’ tumblrs.
Travis reads the German on the back of his chocolate. Marisha: “There are way more syllables there than what you said.” Travis offers the last chocolate to Brian, and promptly eats it in front of him instead. “You gotta act fast on that shit.”
There were some ideas that didn’t work out: Travis was going to cast a spell so everyone could breathe underwater, and they were going to jump off the ship.
A question for Henry: Who’s a good boy?
Tumblr media
Quote from the text thread: “Oh shoot. There is an a-hole with a crossbow. Dangit.”
Finally, in case you were losing sleep wondering, Brian is still dabbing every time he says the word “slash” in a URL. Further updates as warranted.

alright, so today was pretty good. Since I discovered last week I can sleep an extra ten minutes and still make it to church on time, I woke up to my alarm at 7:25 instead of 7:15. I’m really happy we’re going back to three services, because that’ll mean at least another hour of sleep, and Sunday is currently my earliest morning of the week, so that’ll be helpful. But I got up despite being very tired, got ready and went to church. I got in the building literally right when worship was starting, so good timing wise. Good worship, good message. We’re doing a series about family and how God views us, and our pastor picked a random girl from the first row and asked her to come onstage, then demonstrated how we often time think God his back turned to us and that’s how he wants our relationship to be, but in reality he would rather be hugging us so tightly, which he then did to the girl and it was really emotional, she started crying and like, it was just such a powerful moment and another constant reminder of how much I love my church. Throughout the service I was having a mental conversation with God about things that I’m still not mentioning here for personal reasons, but also about dating prospects and future husband, and I felt like I got the answer “it won’t be long now” on that front and like. I normally don’t question whether something is from God or just my brain making things up, but I feel like I don’t want to get my hopes up on that specific subject when it might not be true (sorry if all of that makes no sense to you, it’s not really something that can be explained, just experienced). so I’ve had that floating around my head. After the service ended I went to the volunteer lounge for our little pre-service pow wow, then went up to the babies room and prepared for babies to come in. we had a bit of a dream team of volunteers today, me and two other ladies who are super experienced and have been serving forever, so it was pretty ideal. I think we ended up with 5 or 6 babies, so pretty good ratio, and things were fairly calm for the most part, one baby was crying for a bit but we managed to get her to stop. I was mostly watching/playing with two little very cute girls, one of which was just on the brink of walking, which meant she was trying to pull herself up on everything and try to balance, which unfortunately also means she is gonna take a few spills when she loses her balance, so she fell a few times and was upset afterwards but I was able to get her to stop crying fairly quickly (then she’d go and do it again and we’d start the whole process over). But yeah, pretty good. Service ended, I started on my way home only for the train to be majorly delayed thanks to “police activity” on the tracks in one of the stations before us, and like, I’m plenty used to cold at this point but today was awful. The temperature was bad, but it was also incredibly windy and snowing, and the wind was legit making the snow fall completely sideways, which means if you’re walking you’re literally getting snow in your face the entire time. so that was NOT fun. about 15 minutes later the train finally came. when I got off the bus I had to switch to was about 9 minutes away, so I just waited in the train station lobby until it was close enough that I’d actually go outside. Got home and was like well I’m not going back outside for anything. My roommate’s friend had spent the night after their party last night, so they were playing video games in the living room. I went to my room and was on my laptop for a bit before deciding to take a nap around 3, I feel like I fell asleep fairly quickly, for me anyway, and I woke up at 5:42, so like 2 and a half hours, pretty good. they were still playing video games in the living room, then we switched over to the Super Bowl and watched it with varying degrees of interest. I’m usually more into the commercials than the actual game, but I was pretty underwhelmed by the commercials this year, weren’t many that were super funny or poignant (though the one about thanking first responders definitely got me to tear up) and then of course there was the Olympics commercial set to “This is Me” from the Greatest Showman which was just fucking fantastic and I’m obsessed with it. anyway. I didn’t really care about the outcome of the super bowl one way or another, though I dislike the Patriots as a matter of principle, so I was mildly pleased the Eagles won. Afterwards my roommate wanted to watch This Is Us and I didn’t have anything else to do so I watched it with her, and of course it’s like the emotional climax and pretty much the saddest episode of the show yet, so I was just sitting there in tears over characters I knew nothing about (I’ve seen maybe, two episodes before). so that happened. After I started getting ready for bed, my period showed up today since I stopped taking birth control a few weeks ago since I got the gadget thing that’s supposed to be super helpful for period cramps (it’s called Livia, it was a kickstarter campaign) so I spent a while opening that and figuring out how it works, I’m not having any cramps currently but I know they will likely be in full swing upon waking up tomorrow, so I wanted to be prepared. Guess we’ll see how that works. I have mixed feelings about the situation; I didn’t like taking birth control as sort of a bandaid method for what could actually be a more serious problem, and of course my mother was very unhappy about me being on birth control (which isn’t the best thing to base your decisions off, but I can at least account for her perspective), and I didn’t like how it sets my already very fragile crying trigger into absolute overdrive and made me cry even more than I already do about literally anything even the littlest bit emotional. I realize that treating the cramps with this thing is also a sort of bandaid solution as it’s not necessarily addressing any underlying issues that may or may not exist, but it feels like invasive and probably healthier, so I can be pleased with that at least. I’m forever frustrated by going to the gyno complaining of terrible cramps and all they’re willing to do is write me a prescription for birth control and not look into any underlying issues. my cramps have always been fairly severe and I’ve personally suspected (in my amateur opinion) that I might have Endometriosis, but I haven’t been able to find a doctor who is willing to actually find out. but I guess if it’s manageable at this point with some little device than that works for now at least, hopefully no permanent damage is being done in the mean time. But yeah, I set that up and then packed my lunch/dinner for school tomorrow, then showered and did the rest of my routine, and here we are. It’s later than I’d have liked it to be because I was dilly dallying, but I guess that could be caused by the nap. Oh well. Ready to take on the week tomorrow, after hopefully getting some good sleep tonight. Goodnight sweet peas. Have as lovely of a Monday as is reasonably possible.

Review: Thimbleweed Park (PC/Mac/XB1)
Tumblr media
In late 2014, legendary game designers Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick launched a successful kickstarter for their new game, Thimbleweed Park. Who are Ron and Gary? They developed the classic point and click adventure game, Maniac Mansion, which essentially created a whole new genre of games. Thimbleweed Park aims to recreate the magic of those types of classic games. So does it succeed at creating a nostalgia trip that is also a good game at the same time?
If you don’t know what a point and click adventure game is, you are likely a lot younger than I. Mainly designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse, a point and click adventure is pretty much that… pointing and clicking on things. They are narrative driven games full of puzzles, which were notoriously known for not being logical. Lucasarts and Sierra were the kings of this genre with cult hits such as The Secret of Monkey Island, Sam n Max, Police Quest, Space Quest, King’s Quest and of course Day of The Tentacle, the sequel to Maniac Mansion. Ron and Gary worked for the Lucasarts, and helped create and shape this genre of games that would dominate throughout the 90s until the genre (along with Lucasarts and Sierra) seemed to fizzle out around the turn of the century.
Double Fine Adventure by Double Fine Studios (headed by Tim Schafer, another legendary Lucasarts point and click adventure designer) is known as one of the first major game kickstarters. Originally it asked for $400,000 to create a classic style point and click adventure. They ended up with over $3 million, which lead to scope creep creating a much more contemporary adventure game (which resulted in Broken Age). This probably left at least a few old skoolers yearning for a classic pixel art style point and click adventure game.
Cue Thimbleweed Park. No doubt Ron and Gary would have noticed that is what some Double Fine Adventure backers actually wanted, which gave them the opportunity to deliver a game just like that. Despite getting a decent kickstarter haul themselves, they stuck to their guns and have delivered a game that looks like it could have been a direct sequel to Maniac Mansion, straight out of the late 80s/early 90s. Yes the pixel art is a bit more refined/advanced, but if there is one magical part of Thimbleweed Park, is it totally succeeds at essentially creating a time machine and presenting a game at the same quality level of a classic Lucasarts game from that era.
Tumblr media
Thimbleweed Park, much like Maniac Mansion/Day of The Tentacle sees the player controlling multiple characters. In this instance there’s five. Agent Ray and Reyes are two detectives investigating a dead body in Thimbleweed Park. Delores and her Dad are dealing with Uncle Chuck and his obsession with his pillow factory. And Ransome the Clown is dealing with the consequences of his act being to insult people in the audience. Characters are important in these sorts of games. I really struggled to like the Agents at all, to the point of disliking them. The other characters are all likeable though in their own ways, including the various people who inhabit Thimbleweed Park. By the end of the game thought I had grown quite attached to this quirky misfit bunch, so if you are struggling at first, hang in there.
Hanging in there is a decent amount of time too. I was more so expecting a game that would last 4-8 hours, but my playthrough clocked in around the 13 hour mark. I played the casual mode and while I did find a few times where I got stuck to the point of needing a walkthrough, I will say puzzles in the casual mode were mostly logical. It was more a challenge in finding where a certain item was, or who to give it to etc. There is also a hard mode for those old skool hardcore point and click fans, which going by a walk through I read, it probably amounts to doubling the puzzling. I’m sure the puzzles in the hard mode are much more obtuse, much like the classic games of this genre were. This also gives some replayability, if you do your first run in casual mode, you can come back and replay it again with harder puzzles involved.
Tumblr media
There are a few minor quibbles with the game. I found in particular near the start of the game, some of the voiceover dialogue seemed a bit lo-fi in quality. I didn’t notice this later on, so I’m not sure if it improved or just became accustomed to it. It was to the point that it felt like some lines/characters were recorded in different locations. Speaking of the start of the game, it’s starts off a bit abrupt and awkward. Sometimes plonking you right into the action can work well, but in this instance it feels like not much context is given. Once you get a bit further into the game though, it does pick up more and more as you progress in particular once you get access to all of the characters. Though one slightly bizzare feature (perhaps due to budget constraints) is that the playable characters most of the time are not able to interact with the other playable characters unless there is a specific item to give to that character. The playable characters often have exactly the same dialogue as other playable characters when they interact with the town’s people. These two factors create a feeling of essentially playing one character split up as 5 for the purpose of being able to do puzzles that need two characters in different places. While playable characters have their distinct personalities, this re-use of dialogue diminishes that. It is perhaps all a symptom of it being a small indie game that makes it hard to create enough dialogue for multiple playable characters. This is fair considering triple A games sometimes won’t even have a male and a female character as they claim it doubles the amount of work.
Tumblr media
That said, this game is a love letter to the genre of point and click adventure games, and it does it well. It is unforgiving in not contemporizing it’s gameplay. It is full of game references that only fans of the old classic games will get. It’s constantly breaking the fourth wall. The nostalgia doesn’t just stop with the references, gameplay and graphics. The world and characters are also somewhat influenced by retro TV shows like X-Files and Twin Peaks (both of which had rebirths as new shows recently as well). If you want a piece of gaming history, that is actually new, you’ve come to the right place. Cult fans of the genre will likely think Thimbleweed Park is exactly what they’ve been after. The question is, will anyone outside of that cult following enjoy Thimbleweed Park? It’s hard to say. They might find it too archaic, however with the indie revolution in recent years bringing back pixel art driven games such as Undertale that have been popular with younger generations, there is some possibility that Thimbleweed Park could be an introduction to a much forgotten type of game. And perhaps this is just the beginning of a revival, with Paradigm out this week, and a remaster of Full Throttle about a week later. Perhaps after many years in the dark, point and click adventures are ready for a new golden era thanks to indie studios.
