Hi mom im 19 in college and i feel super depressed but i have no idea why, my life is great, i love my family, nothing is wrong, but i'm just super bored and miserable, feel like i'm wasting my time on social media but can't stop, do you have any advice?

Hello dear,

Two things: overstimulation and loneliness.

We are drowning in content (social media, YT, podcasts, shows, ads, music) as well as sensory experiences (traffic, chatter, crowds, colours, lights) and our cerebral activity is constantly through the roof. Spend twenty minutes on TikTok and you can easily have your heart broken by someone saying goodbye to their cat, be reminded of your singleness (and comment something that "the highway is looking real nice rn"), amazed by someone's beauty and laugh at a dog video.

This is an exhausting way to live. You should be the main character of your life but you choose, day after day, to be a spectator of everyone else's. You happily gamble away hours and hours of your existence that you will never get back in order to find out what this influencer ate today or what's happened to Ned Fulmer. That's the reason why I post very little on my own social media: I don't want to rob you of your time, the most precious thing you'll ever have.

You don't communicate much because you've never learned how to make friends (since you ignore people IRL - watching stories and liking tweets don't count). You don't call grandma, don't hang out with friends, don't have Halloween plans. You stroke your pet with one hand and your eyes pinned to your screen (could be a blanket and you wouldn't know), neglect your needs, and procrastinate until you are so disgusted with yourself that you have a breakdown.

And obviously, politics aren't helping. My gen isn't doing too good, gen Z is scarily passive when something bad happens because they're unsensitized to violence (as they binge true crime, fear school shootings and make suicide jokes constantly), and I don't even want to know how iPad babies are going to turn out.

The people who make content purposefully put you in a position where you will want to keep scrolling, watching, liking, they'll make you believe that you need their product until you buy it (and nothing happens because you never needed it but now you lost money and you're sad because the happy chemicals are already back home) and they know it's hurting you, but it makes them money, so they won't stop. This means you need to make the decision to walk away yourself.

You don't need to consume stuff all the time. You shouldn't feel a need to get your phone out when waiting in line. You shouldn't feel ugly without a filter (if you even like yourself at all). You shouldn't feel ghost vibrations when your phone is in your pocket. You shouldn't have something playing at all times. You shouldn't be afraid of eating out alone or of being empty-handed because then your demons would start talking and you're unwilling to see what they want and how they got there.

Put your phone on flying mode after 9pm. Dim the lights. Turn off the music. Open the window and see what the world is up to. Count red cars, find shapes in the clouds, guess people's jobs, look for dogs, whatever you want, but nothing else. No music, no screens, no distractions. Lie on the bed and try to feel every part of your body. Have a full conversation without taking your eyes away from the other person. Eat without something to watch. Leave your phone in the room when you're going potty. Go for walks and listen to birds. Make small talk with anyone who looks nice, on the subway, at the laundromat, in class.

Choose to live before it's too late. It's already your second chance.

Lately

I have been having such a hectic and beautiful time lately! My bf came to the city this weekend (well, he got his errands done on Friday, but we still spent the weekend together) and stayed with me while I worked from home on Friday, then we napped together and had sex, got high, went to visit our friend and his sister at their new apartment. I'm not totally crazy about it & about their new setup. My friend's room doesn't have any privacy because it's a living room, his sister has a more active life than him and is on the go a lot, he can't play video games while we watch anymore (that was a half joke) but he seems content so maybe a change wouldn't be so bad. His sister is pretty cute too. My bf thinks she is too loud but she's kind of a normal girl, I see through her and she is a sensitive and child-like soul- her Cancer moon shining through her Aqua sun in detriment. Anyway, we took a long walk on Friday and then we got home and watched our regular stuff. It was sooooooo nice to cuddle with him. I missed it and I miss him and I took so much time with him for granted last year. Saturday we stayed in, it was pretty gloomy outside but we managed to sneak a walk in the forest nearby towards the evening. Then we stopped at an outdoor gym and had some fun on the machines. Then we just chilled at home again. And on Sunday it was really overcast, cold, windy, the works. I wanted to go for another walk, but we wasted time until it was already evening and we had to make a trip to the train station so he can buy his ticket. And this morning we woke up together and he almost missed his train. 🙄 Thankfully he didn't, but he was really close. Hope this makes him more time-aware in the future, we even had a little argument before he got here, also time management-related. But anyway, what's important is that he got home safe.

Today I went to the office again, had fun with M- we make work bearable together. Afterwards we went out for dinner and drinks and chatted a lot. It's so nice to have a friend like her. I'm grateful for us and the friendship we nurtured in over a year. We laugh a lot and she's really sweet and honest, it's really the kind of friendship everyone genuinely needs. She's texting me cute stuff about our friendship right now, and how grateful she is that all we do is laugh our asses off at nothing while the weather gets grayer and darker everyday and the people get sadder. Also, we went to buy cigarettes and tried a small shop in the city center. The girl at the counter asked us if we were high school freshmen and we just exploded with laughter. She looked pretty young too, so we asked her back, and she was just 18 🥺 and apologized for the "confusion" lol sweet thing!! Anyway we had a really nice time tonight. I called my bf to say goodnight and my belly is really full but my heart is fuller. I'm alone in my apartment but I feel so loved and blessed that it makes me feel less lonely rn ❤️ Tomorrow is movie night with my work bestie, we are seeing The Exorcist 2, and I'm not excited about the movie because I've read horrible things about it - not even horror-wise, just lame. But I'm excited about the fun we're gonna have anyway

ack hello i'm requesting again because ur stuff is just chefs kiss. anyways, could i have a 🍰? i'm hero, i istp (i used to be intp but i took the test again and got istp) with a 5w4 ennegram. i'm a scorpio, and i'm 5'5 with dark brown hair (that kind of looks greenish sometimes because of a failed hair dying attempt) that is cut into that shaggy emo-eboy type of hairstyle. i use they/them pronouns btw. i have a sort of grunge/mall goth aesthetic, and my personality is kind of bitchy and cold, but when i'm around people i'm close to i can get pretty chaotic. i have a monster energy addiction and i literally don't sleep because i'm stupid 🤠. i like to skateboard, paint, write, watch anime, play video games, and just chill with my friends over discord. i'm a huge procrastinator, and i'm pretty good at school except for math (60% bitchesss). my favorite music artists are the arctic monkeys, the neighborhood, and corpse (agoraphobic is a fucking vibe). i'm pretty dumb, in a like "i have no common sense and will literally do anything if you tell me to" type of way, so my friends have a lot of photos of me doing stupid shit. i curse a lot and make dirty jokes, but if i have to get serious i will (most of the time). i call everyone bro, and i'm kind of awkward with physical touch, though i'm touch starved as fuck (perfect combo i know) LIKES (that i haven't already mentioned): the rain, 3am, noise cancelling earphones, extra polar ice gum, boba, discord, fruity chapsticks, cleanliness (if i get the motivation to clean i like it). But yes I am from Chicago haha, it doesn't seem fancy to me being in Chicago with how expensive downtown can be at times (but then again, when is downtown in ANY big city not expensive?) But it is a lovely place nonetheless, granted don't come now because its cold like the northpole xD but very much recommended the spring time personally! I do hope you have the chance to come to Chicago when things calm down

Ooohh same lol, I can do my nails like a pro but eyeliner ??? I struggle lol. I watched videos on tips but I still can't figure how to not stop my hand from shaking =/ (if any of your followers know a trick do share! Help this noob anon out, i will pay with cookies!) I can do it decent line but its always thick for some odd reason lol. It starts off good in the beginning with a nice thin line but then I go full raccoon mode xD I have big eyes as well so technically not good for my eye shape but it is what it is haha. I do prefer pencil since its easier but I do enjoy the liquid eyeliner look. My current makeup look is eyeliner, mascara and some lip product. I do eyeshadow if I want to be fancy haha but for sure need to look into getting some better products. The ones I do have my eye on are nyx because we love a good mix of free of animal products and cheap, bare minerals is nice as well as well as color pop! For the pricier end fenty and rare beauty are on my list (especially rare omg the lipstick shades are so, so pretty! Especially the color you mentioned ^0^) but ooh we love pinks and orange shades! We love the soft, spring romantic vibes! For me. I like a bit of everything but i do find myself leaning into red, pink, orange shades with a mix of dark tones like a dark wine shade or even black djaksja. My favorite lippie i own is this beautiful orange/brown color? Idk if that is the right way to describe it but it is a pretty color! Jdkandks @ that large lipstick collection, respect haha. I enjoy the old school lip gloss look because i like pretending to feel like an Bratz doll lol.. bb creams are good and I may go with one in the future since it seems a good product to use if you don't want to dive into foundation and such c:

Now skin care wise, I agree! Not all pricey products are better. You can find good products for half the price that works for your skin! It is a trail and error sadly but eventually you will find something that works best for you c: and ooohh i think i have heard of those brands! I'll look at them later to see what they have so thank you for the suggestion!! Lol maybe that's a good thing the brand isn't around where you live xD but true, it is best to not continue with using the products so I will sadly throw them away. I feel bad since I did spend money but if it isn't doing me good skin wise well why ruin my skin more? Garnier is great for sure! I love their micellar water so I may invest in some of their other products! When I will do that, not sure because my parents are a bit strict when it comes to makeup/skin care stuff *sigh*

Oof I do feel like there have been alot of romance plots so we do need a break with some other plot ideas like a good mystery drama for example like let me feel like Sherlock when watching the episodes haha. But ahh it be like that xD sometimes you start off watching a video or two and then you are spending half the night watching funny edits of nct lol and idk how he can be calm like jaehyun is so calm in the most chaotic moments. Like he didn't even flinch when the boxes exploded in nct world!! Teach us your calm ways jaehyun. But I do love his dad ways from the humor he has or his dad sneeze (I will admit some fans do take the "jaehyun dad" narrative a bit too far sometimes or maybe its just me? Thoughts love?)

Hey hey! How was your week/days so far since Valentines?

Well I had a lot to do and I was mainly busy with work (once again). I am remodelling/redecorating my room as well and I still have lots of plans on it, let’s see how the things end up because I will do it all alone (wish me luck).

Happy you loved that set and I hope you will anticipate my Ten set as well (it’s a secret, not secret anymore but I still haven’t started with it yet I have lots of notes and ideas saved, I just need the courage and time for it).

Oh yeah I knew it hehe as far as I know Chicago looks very modern and seems a bit luxurious, indeed should be a bit expensive in the downtown, but even in my country, downtown is something I usually avoid for hanging out because it’s super super pricy.

I came across a few fun videos on tiktok and there was a girl doing her eyeliner in one go, like less that 1 second and I was like?? she’s not from this world. I had the chance to try my new bb cream and corrector from nyx and so far I love it, it doesn’t feel heavy or itchy on my skin, also knowing it’s cruelty free, it’s something that stands on my top buy makeup brand list. I used to love lipgloss when I was a child/teen, but not anymore, I wear my hair down and if go out. Forget about it, especially since I live in a windy area. And now with masks I can only wear a no-transfer lipstick or simply lip balm. A brand I think I will try soon will be Cerave, I heard only good things about it and Wayv also promoted it in the past. At that time the brand wasn’t available in my country, now it become quite popular and if the lockdown ends next month, I’ll go to a pharmacy to test the products and (hopefully) buy some.

As for my drama experience, I started to watch Vincenzo since it’s on Netflix it’s much easier to watch but I didn’t expect the whole comedy twist, I thought that drama was based on a dark-crime-mafia plot, yet I was once again fooled by the trailers. Anyway he looks sooo good for his age, I thought he was in his twenties, just wow! We’re a decade apart, and man! he looks so young, maybe even younger, insane! I should drink more ginseng tea for infinite youth haha Anyway the drama is a stay because I love him so much, he is a very talented actor and hopefully the plot will change as the history will go on.

About Jaehyun and that dad narrative, well yes. Things go out of hand for everyone else not only for him, especially in cases when these words are shoved right into their faces, I would never dare to comment anything like that under their social media or even on personal-interactions, it just seems uncomfortable on many levels. If someone looks hot and sexy, this is what he is and this is what we call them for, magazines and articles describe idols a lot these days with these words and that is ok because it means they have an attractive image that everyone wishes to have or achieve, yes I do get jealous sometimes even if they are men so 😂 but those type of whatever role-playing words, no, niet, nein, não, non. Out of question.

Meanwhile a few comebacks happened and I was excited for it, Shinee’s title song is sooo good and I love the savage lyrics. The rest of the album is also amazing, I have like 3 top favorites. Now I am waiting for Wayv comeback that will happen soon, hope SM won’t disappoint with another low-budget MV, I know we are in a pandemic situation rn but even inside the box, a MV can look stunning. SM take notes from “Make a Wish”, that was simply beautiful and almost everything was shot indoor, stunning effects I want to see again.

And I don’t think I had the chance to ask you, how did you like 127′s Japanese album? I love all the songs and there is non I skip when I play the whole album. I love how different hits from their Korean albums, there is something alluring about it, well the lyrics also suggest that so- I couldn’t miss that huge album that looks like an A3 portfolio so I already ordered one, hopefully by the end of the March I’ll get my hands on it, I can’t wait because the pictures are simply stunning!
