hear me out I had a Thought that I felt needed to be shared

So dani and Jamie have their super fun crossbar penalty challenge contest whatever right? Which on its own is great and perfect and a lovely lil tradition that started when Jamie had all those walls and defenses but has continued to the times of ✨friendship✨

anywayyyyyy I would like to propose the idea that Dani, once aware of his amigo’s need for affection and fondness for tickling, absolutely 100% proposes to Jamie actual stakes/rewards for their little game. Winner gets to tickle the other! (And after a good few where it’s like Jamie that was a miss on purpose, it’s like okay how bout I tickle you if you win?)

But fun silly bonding with our two aces and some fluffy flustered fun

I literally keep dropping in just with random Jamie hc if I’m annoying please lemme know I’ll chill the fuck out

Also since I keep dropping in I feel like I oughta actually identify myself and since I’m clearly obsessed with Jamie imma just call myself baby shark anon 🦈

BABY SHARK ANON!!!! HELLO!!!! You are never annoying, and I love your Jamie headcannons. Sorry it has taken literal ages for me to respond :( I transferred grad programs from an in person one to an online one since my new job has me traveling a lot, but somehow the online program is like 10x more work??? Dani feels major cuteness aggression when it comes to Jamie. He just wants to SQUEEZE HIS FACE and make him smile!!!

Dani loves to teach people things, and Jamie loves to learn. When Dani feels homesick, Jamie will ask him for facts about Guadalajara (did i spell that right? who's to say)

Dani grew up in a warm, loving home, and he hates that Jamie didn't. He goes out of his way to be sweet to his amigo

He is also competitive as hell. So he figures out a way to combine his love for competition and Jamie's love for physical affection

Jamie's spanish vocabulary consists of hello, where is the bathroom, several swear words, and the word 'tickles' purely because Dani coos it at him so often to tease him

If anyone was wondering I'm like 80% sure tickles in spanish is cosquillas which is just such a cute word

Dani's first attempt to combine tickles and the crossbar game is a failure only because Jamie's skill level plummets from 'professional footballer' to 'toddler' as soon as he hears what happens to the loser

After three rounds of Jamie acting like he had never kicked a football in his life, with one hand in Jamie's underarm and the other squeezing Jamie's thigh, Dani play growls and says, "New rule. Winner gets the cosquillas, not the loser."

Jamie blushes all the way down to his chest but nods

And just like that, professional footballer Jamie is back!

One thing Dani didn't account for is that sometimes he will win, and Jamie seems to enjoy taking him to pieces as much as he likes being tickled to death himself

Dani grew up with four sisters and three brothers, and he dreads the day when Jamie will find the spot behind his left ribs that his siblings use against him constantly because it gets him to go boneless and shriek-y with laughter

After a while, Sam will come and watch their games. If Dani wants to get Jamie really bad, he'll ask Sam to help pin him down, which Sam does happily

That's how Jamie accidentally found out that tickling under Sam's arms will get him to collapse immediately with these adorable golden giggles

[I saw this in a fic once but i can't remember which one] collectively, Sam, Jamie, and Dani are known as 'The Babies' by the rest of the team. They aren't the youngest physically, but they act like it

Ok I would love 2 know if you have a goodreads or something, you have great taste in books! If you don’t could you share some recent faves?

oh sure! here you go. i will say it's kind of a mess, my reading is equal parts books i'm reading for normal reasons, classic YA comfort rereads, things i'm reading because i know they're bad and i want to study why, and whatever random topic i'm interested in at the moment (you'll find a bunch of north korean defector memoirs near the top of my recently read)

i do have some recent recs though!

THE FORGERY by ave barrera: an art forger in 90s guadalajara vs the architecture constructed to protect the original. there was an indigenous third gender character that i really liked, and some fascinating psychosexuals

THE STARS UNDYING by emery robin: cleopatra in space. mark antony is there and very hot and also a woman now. lavish & beautiful worldbuilding

HOW ANCIENT EUROPEANS SAW THE WORLD by peter s wells: attempts to situate the material artifacts and other traces of copper & bronze age civilizations in their original contexts. book's subtitle is "vision, patterns, and the shaping of the mind in prehistoric times"... i haven't read this one all the way through but i cracked it open and skimmed and it's very readable and instantly extremely fascinating

THE PILLOW BOOK OF SEI SHŌNAGON: commonplace book of a japanese noblewoman circa 1000 CE. she has such a vivid way of describing the world around her.

DARK LORD OF DERKHOLM by diana wynne jones: scathing critique of capitalism disguised as a YA novel. contains so many interesting wizards. the sequel, YEAR OF THE GRIFFIN, is about a closely knit group of friends discovering the horrors of underfunded and overstandardized academia. truly it's immensely delightful. (if you've read a lot of DWJ, you'll know her record for sensitively depicting non-anglo cultures is not great, and these also are very white british woman in the 90s)

I would actually hate it if Owen were to die, and I didn't even realize that until today.

Is he a favorite character of mine? Not by any stretch of imagination. But he is necessary to the show. Before season 3, I am not sure I would say that.

He was always the center, but on the outside until this season. He feels more connected to the characters beyond just TK and whatever love interest they give him.

Not only would I hate Owen dying for TK, but for Carlos, Judd and Mateo too. They all have very different relationships with him, but are all very important to these men.

His relationship with Tommy is one I enjoy. They have developed a mutual respect for each other, are there for each other in times of tragedy. It was a little odd at first to me in 2x13 when Owen was the one she finally broke down with. However after rewatching, he felt like the exact right person to be there. Just as she was the right person to be with him in 3x04. I hope they keep them platonic (and really think they will), as they have a chaotic vs sane person thing going, and I like it.

I hope we get to dig more into his past, why he is angry. I am actually looking forward to watching the next episode, especially if it gives us more of him acknowledging his issues.

So sorry to not get to this until after 3x16, but I'm kinda glad I did.

Owen has really deep bonds with several characters. I really have enjoyed the deepening of Marjan and Owen's relationship this year. They're both so similar and I really appreciate how Owen actually kinda listens when Marjan talks.

Owen and Tommy make a great team of co-Captains. I really enjoy their freindship and the deep care and respect for each other.

Mateo loves Owen. The hero worship has dimmed since living with Owen. But Owen is so important to Mateo. Owen saw potential in Mateo and is the only reason Mateo wasn't deported. Mateo is a DREAMER and needed a job to stay. If Owen hadn't picked up on the fact that Mateo was talented and investigated to find out Mateo was dyslexic and then put Marjan on getting him to pass, Mateo would be in Guadalajara with his dad. I'm also fairly certain Mateo and his family got separated when he was in high school and when he found out Owen had cancer, he was immediately distraught.

Judd and Owen are very good friends and two men who understand each other on a very deep level. Judd is another person who Owen sometimes sort of listens to. Owen cares about Judd's advice and council. They share the awful reality of losing their whole firehouse. Judd respects the hell out of Owen, even if he thinks he's a bit of a mess. I loved 3x16! It was so good. I really liked how we learned about another terrible tragedy (two) that happened to Owen and how he managed to face his dad. I've said it before, TK comes by his itch to run naturally. Owen is a runner, as was his mother, as was Gwyn. Owen staying and facing it was such a sign of his growth through therapy. So was his calling TK and saying (part) of what he needed to say to his son. Owen hasn't fully changed, but I'm really interested to see the remainder of his arc through season 3. He started the season alone and isolated, even after he came back from the woods, he wouldn't let himself enjoy the party but went upstairs to be alone. I'm hoping to see him integrated into the firehouse even more and a little less secrative. I was so pleased with what we got though. they acknowledged so much I was hoping they would.

It had been what? Two, maybe three days?

You had lost track of time. After so much time in the dark, it happens. Your mind just washes away and it seems like you're floating in space, with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

The blindfold in your eyes kept the light away and the restrains in your arms, made your whole body ache. The matress under you was actually soft, but even fluffy clouds could feel like a stone after being kept in the same position for so long.

Your throat was dry and hurt because of how you had screamed. Screams that were muffled by the gag you had in your mouth.

Every single spot those men had touched burned like a small fire and threatened to explode you. You were pretty sure you had marks all over. They hadn't been gentle when kidnapping you from the middle of the bloody street.

You was tired, scared and wanted to leave. Go back to your life. But you knew you couldn't. There was no getting out of there.

Taking a deep breath you tried to steady your heavy breathing, moving your hands against the restrains, to get maybe just a little more comfortable. Just a little.

That, was all you could do.

"Something new is up?"

That was the question Tyler had made when he got a call from Nik. It was unexpected, surprising. After what happened in Bangladesh many months ago, he had done a few other jobs, but none of them with her. Now, though, she seemed pretty determined to get him on board of whatever was happening. It intrigued him, made him frown while holding the phone against his left ear.

He had been laying low since his last mission, the elimination of a target that he completed successfully in Greece. That mission had been fast, too easy. Since that, he had been wasting all the money he got in alcohol and cigarettes. Living each day with the usual boredom of loneliness and headache due to the all the booze. The opportunity to get into some action and do something useful, sounded really good. Truth was, the idea of being fired at excited him, as twisted as it was.

That and all the cash that Nik said was at stake made him get into a plane two days later and land on Guadalajara, Mexico, where Nik had told them to meet. Now he found himself in the back of a rented apartment in a simple building, located in a poor part of the city. Description was a thing Nik valued a lot, and one of the things that made her so good at her job. The room was filled with people he didn't really know, although some of those faces were familiar from previous jobs. Over tables and armchairs ultimate technology they frequently used on missions had been gathered up, just waiting to be used when the operation began.

"Listen up people, let's begin" Nik said out loud, bringing all the attention to herself as everyone instantly stopped talking by hearing her voice. She was a natural leader, no doubt about that. Pressing a single button on the control of the projector that had been installed hours before, she made a photo show up there for everyone to see.

It was the image of a twenty year old girl. She was smiling to the camera as someone took a picture of her and the park she was in. She looked calm, happy. If her image was being shown there though, Tyler knew that something really bad had probably happened to that girl.

"Her name is (Y/N) (Y/L/N)" Nik said, after taking a step to the side to give everyone on the room a good view of the girl's face. "Her father is a US senator who's been a big name on the Congress for almost ten years" someone whistled, and others nodded in agreement. With only that being said, they already knew it would be a great case to work on. "Four days ago, she was kidnapped here in Guadalajara" she pressed the button again on the control, and a video started playing on the projector.

It was a security footage obviously, due to the black and white image and low resolution. In it the girl was walking on the street camly, carrying a backpack and wearing headphones. It was late at night, the corner of the footage marked 21:37. She was alone, and there was no one else on the street. That was the perfect opportunity for a kidnapping, Tyler thought to himself, and the response to that came seconds later.

A van approached the girl suddenly, apparently coming out of nowhere. Stopped by her side and before she could even do anything, the back door was opened and three masked men stormed upon her. She tried to run, but they had no trouble in grabbing her violently by her arms and legs and throw her on the inside of the van, leaving behind only her now destroyed phone. The whole thing happened in less than twenty seconds. No one noticed a thing, no one saw anything. That had been extremely well planned.

"Do we know who they are?" a guy with glasses Tyler had never seen before asked, analyzing with full attention the video that started playing again in replay.

"Negative. We couldn't get anything from the security videos and the family doesn't know specifically who could be behind it, but five hours later the Senator recieved a call" as Nik pressed the button again, an audio file started to roll and filled everyone's ears.

Senator (Y/L/N), we have your lovely daughter. If you don't drop the Border Control Project on the presentation day, she dies.

And then the robotic adapted voice was gone. That was it. Short, harsh and objective.

"What's the Border Control Project?" Tyler was the one who made the question, before anyone else did the same. With his arms crossed over his chest, his mind was working fast in taking in all the information he was receiving. He knew he would need them in the future.

"A project created by Senator (Y/L/N) to expand the police activity in the mexican-american border. If this project is approved on the mentioned presentation day, trafficking rotes will be affected, illegal transportations will be extremely lowered" Nik explained, dropping the control on the nearest table with a sight. "Dealers, politicians, traffickers, a lot of people could be behind it"

"So our only approach is to go after the girl herself" Tyler stated firmly, and the others agreed.

"Yes, we rescue her. And possibly in the meantime, figure out who did this. Senator said he will pay three times more if we do" some of the team members started clapping and Nik rolled her eyes, but had a smile on her lips. They were mercenarys, money was their greatest worry and desire.

"What was she doing in Mexico?" a middle aged woman with blond straight hair that was in the other end of the room across the australian, was the next one to make a question.

"She got a six month transfer to the local University. Student exchange happens at least twice a year between Mexico and the United States" Nik answered and then crossed her own arms over her chest. "We start the operation within two days. Tyler will do the field work, were going to give him all the support he needs. Meanwhile, we prepare yourselves. Got it?"

Everyone agreed and started to go to work, opening computers and printing files. Tyler didn't move, just looked around in complete silence. Nik was the one who approached him.

"You're good with this?" she asked, inspecting his features for any sign of denial.

He nodded, averting his eyes back to the projector where someone had again projected the picture of the girl smiling. Looking deeply into her eyes, Tyler sighted.

"I'm gonna need a whole file on her, anything you can find. When I get to her, I have to know or have something that will make her trust me"

He had no doubt. He would find her.

BILLBOARD: St. Vincent On Her Reworked 'MassEducation' LP & Her 2019 Plans: 'The Best Thing I'm Going to Do Is the Next Thing

As 2018 winds down, Billboard is asking some of the artists who helped define the year in music to look back on their accomplishments, their favorite memories and their pop-culture obsessions from the past 12 months. First up: St. Vincent.

St. Vincent is never satisfied. It’s why, she says, she is always creating in one way or another: She picked up DJing in June and spun her first live set by September; reimagined her 2017 knockout MASSEDUCTION as a stripped down, piano-driven album called MassEducation this October; started producing for other artists as a part of some as-yet-unannounced collaborations; and is gearing up for her feature-length directorial debut, in which she’ll bring a woman-led version of Oscar Wilde’s The Portrait of Dorian Gray to the screen.

“The best thing I’m going to do is the next thing I do,” she tells Billboard, just a few days before she picked up two Grammy nominations for MASSEDUCTION (the album's art director, Willo Perron, also got a nod for best recording package.) But while she has a few more plans on the books for 2019 -- including a Feb. 14 performance at Lincoln Center as part of its American Songbook series -- what that next, best thing will be in her own music is open-ended. “You know when you hear it,” she says. “When a ghost walks through the room or when you sing a certain line and it makes you all weepy. That’s when you know that something is special.”

Below, she talks about reworking her songs for MassEducation, the hits and misses of Auto-tune and why she's taking a break from social media.

“Slow Disco” now exists in three different forms: the original on MASSEDUCTION, a made-to-dance version called “Fast Slow Disco” and now a stripped-down take on MassEducation. Why is it important to show that your songs can have many lives?

I felt like that particular song wasn’t done telling its story in just the one version that existed [on MASSEDUCTION]. And to me, that’s a testament to songwriting. Like, “Can this song be stripped back to nothing and still be powerful?” I spent so much time really working on the songcraft of this album that I just wanted to live in [the songs], totally stripped bare. Recording in that way actually made me feel more free. We recorded it live over the course of a couple days, and we didn’t do very many takes of anything. We didn’t even talk about what we were going to do or how we were going to do it, so you’re actually hearing us discover the songs in real time. What happens oftentimes for me is I write guitar parts that are complicated and then vocal melodies that can be complicated, so my brain live is doing complex processing. But it’s such a joy to just sing. I just got to really live in the words and live in the space and take my time and live in the silence. That, to me, is really freeing and gratifying and gets to my heart.

You’ve taken up DJing recently. What has that taught you about reinventing a song?

I love DJing, because it keeps me voraciously looking for new music, going back to things that I love and trying to make connections between songs. Sometimes those connections are as simple as, “Okay, the BPM and vibe of this are in a similar place, this could be an interesting transition.’ And sometimes the things that the songs have in common can be really hilariously, lyrically thematic. I get to test my genealogy and go from Herbie Hancock into Tribe Called Quest into Kendrick [Lamar] or something -- tracing lines between music from totally different eras. I love it. I get to discover music and listen in a way that is just total pleasure and enjoyment and inspiration.

You’ve also started producing for other artists. What surprised you the most about that process?

Producing takes the preciousness out of music-making, and you can see the big picture because you’re not in any way blinded by your own fear or ego -- that thing that you run into when you’re doing something really personal, like singing or playing guitar. I can hear the bird’s-eye view of what something could be without having to perform it at all. So that’s great. I love the tech side of it, too. I love sitting and trying to get great sounds for hours, and I love trying different things and reaching and building and playing with space. Also, one thing I definitely have learned is to never ever settle. Never settle for what kind of artist you think someone is, never underestimate anybody. Always be listening, and push it.

What’s a musical trend you’d like to see go away in 2019?

Sometimes I find Auto-Tune really evocative, and then sometimes I find it really not evocative. But it’s all in the hands of the artist. I think that we’re going to see less trap beats in 2019. They are really cool, don’t get me wrong, but it seems like it’s reached max saturation.

What artist would you want to invite to a holiday dinner with your family?

This is going to sound braggy, but one of my favorite compliments that I ever got was from an artist who said: “So many things are pointless, and you’re not.” That was the biggest compliment I think I’ve ever gotten. But I don’t want to be gross and say who that was, so… who would I invite to dinner? Is this one of those ones where you’re supposed to say Jesus? I would love to invite Kerry James Marshall. I’ve never met him. I really loved his exhibition last year, it was just beautiful.

What’s the best performance you saw this year?

Nine Inch Nails.

What’s one song you could not get out of your head this year?

Currently, the 1975’s “Love It If We Made It” -- I like that they’re pushing. It’s ambitious and has so much heart to it. I really have enjoyed their new album.

What’s your favorite city that you visited this year?

I had a really great time in Guadalajara -- let’s give Mexico some love. I was on tour, I’d never been. I was there in October, but my brother-in-law is a chef, so he came and we just ate all the tacos and tried all the food. It was great.

What app did you use the most this year?

The podcast app. After I was done with touring and answering questions about records and stuff, I was taking a social-media break. I don’t have Instagram or Twitter or anything on my phone anymore. It’s wonderful. I used to, but the world doesn’t need me to weigh in on every outrage every day. I was like, “This is totally joyless. I’m doing this because it’s a thing that I got conditioned to think that I needed to do, and it gives me exactly zero pleasure.” It doesn’t feel good to my heart to do that kind of stuff.

Right now, what is the most important thing to you?

My family is the most important thing to me. What I spend the most time on is my art. You can read that however you like.

I’m sure they intersect at times.

They absolutely do, yeah. But my heart is making what I love and the people I love, and that’s kind of it.

During the rollout of MASSEDUCTION, you held a mock press conference and poked fun at music-journalism tropes. What do you ideally want out an interview?

The thing is, my ideal interview is actually an interview where I don’t talk about myself and get to ask other people about themselves. But I realize that’s not the structure, that’s not the exchange. I was trying to acknowledge the dance we were doing as artists and press and have some fun with that. Some people liked it, and I’m sure it was annoying to some people. It’s strange when you think [an interview] is one thing and someone has a completely different experience, and you’re like, “Oh dear God, do I lack that much self-awareness? Do I not understand facial cues, what’s happening here?” But it’s not in my control, and it’s not supposed to be.
