something about Hephaestus saying "you're a good kid, Annabeth" really stands out to me. he didn't point out the very obvious about her, like her intellect and interest in his creations, or her hubris in thinking she could dismantle the chair. he said that she's a good kid. because Hephaestus was mistreated by the gods. because Annabeth was shunned by Athena. because he believes that gods shouldn't treat their own children like that and he wants to be better. because he knows how much it means to a little girl who's fought for approval from her own mother her whole life, whose father neglected her. because he wants to break the cycle. don't touch me

im so happy with the way they recharacterize Medusa in the show. like it really drives home the "not all everyone that looks like a monster is a monster" analogy. Medusa isn't a monster because she was turned into a gorgon, she's a monster because hurts people, and she was enough of a threat to the trio to justify them killing her. also she serves as an interesting way to plant that seed of doubt in Annabeth, where she starts to question her beliefs and her mom's actions. can't wait to see her development into wanting to throw hands with Hera.

Leah Sava Jefferies as Annabeth Chase is so important to representation in the media, not just because black women are undermined for their intelligence simply for being black, but also because how often have you seen neurodivergence represented in a young black girl? most depictions of ADHD in media are usually of white boys. even girls with ADHD is so rare. and here we have Annabeth, the smartest girl in camp, always six steps ahead of everyone else, who also happens to have ADHD and dyslexia. i will never shut up about how important Leah is to this show

you can already see seeds Annabeth's fatal flaw in the second episode. the expressions of agreement like "yep" when Percy says "I know you're better at this than me." the way she leaves him on the cliff knowing Clarisse would be after him. the way she shoves him into the lake, knowing there's a chance she could be wrong about this guy. she knows how incredibly smart she is and is confident in it, however, she's also confident to a fault. it'll be a big source of problems for both herself and those around her. i know it's not a lot but it's there, and I'm here for it
