(from @feelingpure)
I remember seeing something you posted (idk maybe a few weeks ago) saying like ā€œok my ft era is doneā€, then cut to; your new bio and header. Skskdbdbf, I love this development!
While I'm here I'll ask a question too. Kinda related to your recent gifsets with Tim's and Hawk's colour palettes. What's your favourite outfit for each of them in the series?
you're making me choose???? um. does this count as an outfit?
Tumblr media
no but for real, tim's entire '70s look is so iconic. the lesbian lumberjack flannel and jeans, that insane sweatervest, even that simple hoodie -- i want it all.
Tumblr media
also adore the matching cabin!husbands flannel for hawk and tim in 1968, and the return of the ugly christmas sweater in 1986 (now with tie-dyed tee!)
Tumblr media
but also also. the tweed + bowtie combo of election night? no wonder hawk fell for him immediately.
Tumblr media
as for hawk, lmao, i mean. he dresses impeccably, but so boring in comparison. give me tim laughin gender any day.
absolute favorite outfit duo is tim's 1953 christmas sweater + hawk's white tank and (skippy's) tie. honestly, hawk wearing skippy's 'collar' (esp so perfectly matching tim's sweater) broke my brain.

Wow, I expected the story of how Alastor and Percy started dating to be dark, but this is a whole other level of dark ... I love dark couples, and good character work. So, I was wondering how would Angel and Husk (+ Charlie) react if they found out the truth about their relationship? I think they would think that Percy is the victim in this relationship, and that he is in this relationship against his will (well, because he is a child), which of course is not the case, nor is Percy the victim
Tumblr media
HOW THE HAZBIN CAST WOULD REACT TO FINDING OUT ABOUT ROSECEST
Charlie
Oh sheā€™s absolutely traumatized by this. Sheā€™d basically immediately bonded with Percy (because ooo cute doll whoā€™s so incredibly polite) so sheā€™s heartbroken by the discovery
Charlie blames herself for this, for being stupid enough to let a obvious predator into her hotel, for not catching on sooner there was something off about the supposed ā€œfather and sonā€ they claimed to be, for letting Percy get ā€œabusedā€ under her roof
Sheā€™s absolutely inconsolable, locking herself it her bedroom like in ep 7, not talking to Al for days, not letting anyone near her accept Vaggie
If Charlie is seen at all then sheā€™s a mess, huge eye bags from not sleeping, unwashed and tangled hair, just a wreck
Charlie is convinced Percy is just a helpless victim in all of this
Basically the discovery breaks her, sure she has Lucifer and Vaggie, but no proof redemption is possible, the overlord who was responsible making this more then just a dream turned out to be a irredeemable monster, and does anyone down here even deserve redemption?
Alastor
He had a suspicion this wouldnā€™t go well at all, he tried so hard to keep his darling little doll away from the hotel, not wanting to fill Percyā€™s mind with such nonsense as ā€œredemptionā€ and ā€œmoralityā€ as if he could even be redeemed at this point, that boy is his
Eventually he relaxed (knows how go manipulate everyone) enough to let Percy stay with him
They both play their parts well, after all theyā€™ve had decades to prefect their little act, sneaking kisses and anything else that would jeopardize their facade behind closed doors or when no one was watching
He tries to keep Percy isolated even in the hotel, often watching his sonā€™s interactions to make sure Percy isnā€™t getting pulled away from his controlling loving grasp
Once the secret is out heā€™s furious. Immediately trying to find whoever saw them so he can make them pay
If you thought he was being mean in ep 5 then ohh boy heā€™s worse. No more nice pleasantries, no more polite alastor, no everyone is going to see just how sadistic and cruel the radio demon can be
No one is safe from his wrath, even those whoā€™ve been with alastor for decades
Sure his souls probably get the nicest treatment out of anyone, but all of them are still threatened with harsh punishment if they donā€™t help him
Percy (thankfully) isnā€™t physically punished for this, heā€™s simply watched constantly to make sure he doesnā€™t run off with charlotte
If he gets his hands on the FILTH who caught themā€¦well letā€™s just say heā€™ll be on air for a while
Vaggie
She saw something like this comingā€¦
not something THAT awful but she was right to not trust alastor at all
Sheā€™s absolutely disgusted by the discovery, sure as a former exorcist sheā€™s done some awful things, but abusing a helpless child like thatā€¦it crossed a line
She can barely look at Alastor without wanting to rip him to shreds
Vaggie is thankfully kept occupied by Charlieā€™s breakdown, gotta be a supportive girlfriend :)
She desperately wants to try and talk with Percy about this to reason with him, maybe somehow convince him that what Alastor is doing is very wrong, that her and Charlie can help him, anything
She knows Charlie is in no state to be the groupā€™s leader so she steps in to the role
Angel
Heā€™sā€¦..conflicted. On one hand heā€™s horrified by/for Percy, but angel also understands how hard it is to escape a abusive relationship
He wants to talk to Percy about this, to maybe help the kid get out to make sure Percy doesnā€™t end up trapped like him. But he can never get Percy alone long enough to talk
Angel knew since Percy arrived there was something more between the boy and alastor (if them being so clingy wasnā€™t a obvious enough hint) heā€™d often be ā€œconventionally upā€ after everyone else had gone to bed to try and catch them
His drunken tirade is actually what got this whole mess started
Angel is absolutely terrified of alastor after learning the truth it reminds him too much of Valentino
If Angel was making progress on recovery in season 1 oh boyyy thatā€™s gone. Heā€™s back trying to numb everything with sex, alcohol and drugs (hell itā€™s probably worse because he canā€™t get the image of Percy being abused/his own memories of Valentino to stop)
Husk
Oh boyyā€¦husk
He doesnā€™t take it well at all, he already didnā€™t like alastor to begin with and thatā€™s absolutely true now
The way I picture him finding out is through drunken rambling from angel. He first writes it off as just Angel being wayyyyy to intoxicated and probably confusing one of his scripts for something real
But his mind refuses to accept that answer, so he goes and confronts alastor about it
The more they talk the less convinced husk is that alastor is innocent of everything
They get into a whole big fight about it (picture something similar to the leash scene from ep 5 but more aggressive) and the rest find out from thereā€¦
Niffty
Being Alastorā€™s oldest trapped soul comes with some oerks, like already knowing your boss is in a romantic relationship with his adopted son
Yeah sheā€™s hurt about everyone getting into a whole big thing about this, but sheā€™s really too busy cleaning and being her chaotic little self to really care
She makes sure to spend some extra time with Percy after everything goes down, trying to help distract her bestie and basically adopted baby brother with her usual antics (roach puppet show woooo!!!)
Niffty continues to look up to alastor even after everything is revealed, continuing to be around the two constantly.
If rosecest end up leaving the hotel niffty soon disappears with them as well

I LITERALLY COULDNT NOT DO THIS POST NOW!! so hsmtmts stans, portwell nation, literally everyone who wants to read me practically screaming for 10 paragraphs here is the hsmtmts season 2 finale EPISODEšŸ‘ REVIEWšŸ‘
starting off strong with redlyn. my beauties. my loves. my sunshines. i LOVED that the whole cast knew about redā€™s plan. just carlos, ricky and ej being like ah yes locker lettersšŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰ and everyone being all smiley and knowing SO CUTE!! i hated seeing ash sad but GOD RED SPENDING THE WHOLE NIGHT MAKING THIS THING TO SHOW ASHLYN HOW MUCH HE APPRECIATES HER?? GOD TIER. also the crew just wATCHING FROM THE DOOR WHILE REDLYN IS IN THEIR OWN WORLD?? MY HEART theyā€™re just such a genuine couple. i love their sweet awkward moments. i also love that lights is their reoccurring thing. it just makes me so happy. yā€™all just KNOW red calls ashlyn his sunshine and i donā€™t take criticisms on that. i also really wanted an i love you confession there but theyā€™re so cute that i will allow it to wait
HOWIE AND KOURTNEY!!! at first (bc ep. 11) i was like HOWIE NO YOU CANT HAVE DONE ALL OF THIS STUFF TO HELP EAST AND THEN STAB THEM AND KOURTNEY IN THE BACK but the fact that he was literally just in awe of kourtney and so nervous to be around her because he thinks sheā€™s so talented mADE MY HEART RACE truly incredible. also loved kourt standing up for herself. we LOVE and STAN a straight forward QUEEN also their dorky arm in arm walk was so adorable. also drum rolls being their thing. also honorable mention to kourtā€™s (daraā€™s) mom WE STAN
ej helping mr. mazzarra get that job?? I LOVE THEIR RELATIONSHIP SO MUCH.
PORTWELL ANGST SCENE I CRY. ALSO DID I CALL THAT SCENE OR DID I CALL THAT SCENE?? if you read the fic i posted like 7 hours ago youā€™ll know what iā€™m talking about. anyways back to the show. gina joking around and then realizing that ej means not rescheduling ever and her just pretending like sheā€™s fine with it?? OUCH OUCH OUCH i wouldā€™ve rather her immediately been heart broken. DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON EJā€™S FACE AFTER SHE WALKS AWAY. matt absolutely killed that part. you can tell he waited just long enough for her to walk away when he lets his face fall and IT HURTS YOU CAN LITERALLY SEE HIM WANTING TO STAY CRYING BEFORE HE TURNS AWAY
rini moment. not the dressing room parallel. it was PAINFUL. the juxtaposition between the scene in the s1 finale and this scene?? OUCH. ricky saying if weā€™re literally on the same page (something they struggled with throughout the entire season) and nini saying just for a moment. i just wanna talk to the writers I JUST WANNA TALK BECAUSE THAT WAS RUDE.
seblos being cuties and ms. jenn on some fuck shit. she was having a MOMENT. like chill itā€™s high school theater itā€™s alright sis.
GINA LOOKING IN THE MIRROR AND SOBBING I HATED IT. I HATED IT.
gini moment?? i loved it. also niniā€™s right. portwell is so powerful for so many reasons. period sis. and sheā€™s right WE ARE LUCKY TO KNOW GINA. i loved their moment of solidarity and friendship. imma be honest for like 0.1 seconds i thought if portwell doesnā€™t work out gini might be the move bUT DONT WORRY IM A PORTWELL WARRIOR FOREVER also yā€™all called gina talking to nini about jamie and her music. YALL CALLED THAT SHIT
i liked ms. jenn and rickyā€™s moment. i loved joshā€™s acting in this scene because itā€™s just so well done. like doesnā€™t seem like heā€™s acting at all and it translates so well in this scene. it was very heartfelt and such a mature moment for ricky. so reflective. i love ricky
second chances GAVE ME CHILLS the whole staging, the vocals, the core four. CHILLS. the acting from all of them for this song WAS INCREDIBLE. it was so simple but really made the scene. iā€™m also a sucker for songs structured like this. with like the rounds and the switching lyrics over top of each other. LOVE.
ok literally all of them booing when lily and antoine showed up sENT ME because me too THE FUCK. antoine saying ā€œbig red. you were also in itā€ mADE ME SNORT. ricky literally shooing them out made me laugh and lilyā€™s whirling turn and ricky like startling back a bit made me laugh. i hate lily but her confession was literally me. like i like his big brown eyes and his big brown hair too you ainā€™t special bitch. antoineā€™s thumbs up was SO FUNNY. andrew was hilarious in this role.
also i didnā€™t love that they were like well fuck the menkies after that was a major plot point of the season but like also i get it. just being like MEH the stress isnā€™t worth it. EJā€™S SPEECH HES LITERALLY VOICE BREAK JUST THE FUCKING GROWTH THAT HES HAD I LOVE HIM
jennzzarra flirting in front of the kids?? kinda cute ngl. also am i muted? SENT ME. also love that howie is just chilling there while theyā€™re talking about dropping out. KOURT SAID LETS BURN THOSE RESULTS
benjamin being BOLD BOLD good for him
big star nini?? good for her!
ashlyn being like YIKES iā€™m sorry i didnā€™t realize you thought of ej that way and her being like hahah ok... wait WHAT? but i KNEW ash was going to progress that along somehow. like obvs ej and gina were sulking and ashlyn HAD to be the one to step in. she do be the #1 portwell warrior. thank you for your service maā€™am
i will only allow ricky and lily to be a thing IF itā€™s a summer fling, if it means antoine gets to stay around and if it pushes rini back together and if none of that happens then wtf is even the point of pairing those two up. but we already know ricky is a sucker for misunderstood competitive women (minus nini)
GINA CHASING AFTER EJ!!! HIS FACE OF JUST OH GOD PLEASE LET ME BE HEARTBROKEN!! YOU GOT BAD INTEL!! THE CAN I... CAN YOU WHAT? CAN I KISS YOU with her little giddy laugh and her smile GIRL YOURE GLOWING and then ejā€™s swallow as he turns to fully look at her. WILL YOU BE MY FIRST KISS!!!! HIM JUST SLOWLY SMILING FROM EAR TO EAR AND DROPPING HIS BAG TO WALK TO HER AND THEN THEM RUNNING WHEN THEY GET CLOSER AND GINAā€™S LITTLE GIGGLING I CANNOT EVEN
i am so so SO HERE FOR SUMMER FLUFFY IN LOVE PORTWELL
overall am i a little sad it was so short? yes. do i understand the insane restrictions they were working under? yes. am i confident about a season 3? absolutely. i am HERE for a summer season.
anyways PORTWELL IS CANNON!!

Nancy Drew S2 Premieres Today
Please find under the cut my various hopes and dreams for the characters
Bess
I have so many hopes for Bess going forward. My main two are ones you will have heard before.
One, I want Victoria to take Bess under her wing. I loved their interactions in ep 5 while George was possessed. George accepts spn stuff these days, and as such is more understanding of her momā€™s struggles with alcoholism. But I think she will always have a certain degree of resentment towards Victoria for failing to be the mother George and her sisters needed. Bess on the other hand has none of that baggage, and so if Victoria is going to be passing down her teachings to anyone I think it would be Bess. I want to see them spending more time together, sort of like an internship, and maybe Bess can advocate to George about her mom, and help them become closer.
Two, I have a very specific storyline I want to unfold with Lisbeth. We know the Marvin family in addition to being super rich is super shady, and Granny Marvin wants Bess to spy on Lisbeth to help the family out. I know Bess is torn between her family and her girlfriend because she has wanted to be a part of the Marvin family for so long, but I donā€™t think she would actually betray Lisbeth like that. So I want to see a storyline where we as the audience think Bess is betraying Lisbeth, and spying on her and stuff like that, (similar to Ow*n and Nancyā€™s fake fight in ep 11) and then right as we expect consequences WHAM. It turns out Bess was really spying on her family the whole time for some super illegal murder-y thing that happened, and Granny Marvin or someone else gets arrested. She texts Lisbeth along the lines of ā€œeverything went great, see you in an hour!ā€ Only when she gets there Lisbeth is DEAD. And then Amaya helps her through the grief and they bond and fall in love aaaaaaaaah
Three, Iā€™m interested in her London family. They want nothing to do with her anymore, Iā€™m assuming because she insisted on getting to know her momā€™s side of the family, but is there more to the story? I would like to find out.
Four, I want her together with Amaya their chemistry is on FIRE sorry not sorry
George and Nick
Since they are dating Iā€™m doing them at the same time, but I have hopes for them separately and together. Starting with George:
One, I want George to start manifesting psychic powers like her mom. I have said it before and Iā€™ll say it again. We got a glimpse of the sorts of things Victoria deals with everyday in the seance episode (ep 7) but George will never truly understand what her mother goes through until she experiences it for herself. Yes she now deals with ghosts and hauntings on a regular basis, but George can turn it off. She can step away and make out with Nick, and manage the Claw, and parent her sisters. Victoria canā€™t turn it off, and yes that has led to some character/parental failings on Victoriaā€™s part but I still want her and George to have a loving relationship. Imagine George starts seeing visions and spirits and things she canā€™t turn off or walk away from, and finally understands how and why her mom is overwhelmed. And then imagine Victoria becoming incensed and heartbroken, because her abilities have made a mess of her life and she in no way shape or form wants it for her daughter. She immediately teaches George all the control she can, how to shut it off or block them out, and together she and George find new (sober) ways of dealing.
Two, I want to meet the Fan dads. George has two sisters, Ted and Jessie, and the three of them all have different dads. I would be fine with meeting any of them. And it would make an interesting storyline if it turns out one of the dads had no idea he had a daughter? Iā€™m not married to any particular storyline, but thereā€™s a lot of potential there and I want to see what the writers do with it. Onto Nick:
One, as is the case with everyone else, I want to know more about his family. They are all just chilling in Florida, and to our knowledge have never tried to meet up with their son who is now out of prison for a while now which is odd. I know from the episode description in 2x2 that his mom is going to come up for a visit, and I cannot wait to see how it plays out. He mentioned being the black sheep of the family (ep 11 I think) and the writers canā€™t just drop a line like that and not delve into it, come on.
Two. I know this is super random but I want him to get some sort of stable living situation. He has like 5 million bucks worth of bearer bonds he canā€™t just sleep on Georgeā€™s couch for the rest of the show. Plus Harbor Day is over which means the hotels and stuff have opened up. I want him to have a home, is that so wrong of me? A space he can make his own and fill with classical novels and have sex with Nancy?
Itā€™s not as specific as my Bess wish but I know how I want George and Nickā€™s relationship to go.
I want them to fall apart slowly against their wishes. I mentioned this in one of my earlier reviews. There is so much potential for angst here you guys. I want them to try and stay together because they do like each other, and are attracted to each other, and care about each other, but itā€™s just not enough. I want Nick to have situations where he consistently goes to Nancy over George for her help and neither of them really understand why. I want George to be desperate to hold onto him because sheā€™s never really been with a guy like Nick before where she doesnā€™t have to hide and she likes that feeling. But despite their best efforts, itā€™s just not enough and they both realize itā€™s just not meant to be, and sadly let each other go.
Also I want Bess and George to be cousins no I will never shut up about it
Ace
Honestly Ace as a character is perfection. The writers could do anything with him and I would support it. Go crazy guys.
Although if he ended up with George I wouldnā€™t be opposed...
Ryan Hudson
Just two wants, and I probably wonā€™t get either of them, but here it is.
One, we never saw how Ryan and George got together, and Iā€™m hoping they can find a way to make it slightly less blegh. Like maybe their first run in was as a waitress/customer at the Claw, and she knew he was married but made out with him anyway, and then he pursued her after finding out she was in high school because he was already attracted to her. I despise Aria x Ezra and didnā€™t watch past season 2 of PLL but maybe they could do it like that, where he didnā€™t actually know she was 17 at first.
Two, now that they have officially established the George/Ryan thing was fucked up and in no way Georgeā€™s fault and that it messed her up big time, I want Ryan to make amends. I want him to apologize to George, and have him understand that yes he wronged her, and took advantage of her, and he shouldnā€™t have done it. Theyā€™ll never be on great terms, but considering he is Nancyā€™s father hopefully they can at least get to a place where they are civil with each other, and he is always willing to help her out when she needs it.
Nancy Drew
NANCY. My girl. My babe. My daughter. Lucyā€™s daughter. Whatever shall we do with you.
One, no surprise here, I want Nancy to get back on good terms with Carson. I heard in an interview, I donā€™t remember where nor do I have the link, that Carson is going to be practicing law again this season and Nancy is going to be doing some sleuthing for him in regards to some cases. Nancy is a rational human being, and I am confident given enough time she will understand that her father was really doing what he thought was best, and trying to do right by Lucy and fulfill her dying wishes, and sheā€™ll be able to forgive him.
Two, I want her and Ryan to get to an amicable relationship. Nancy has so many (justified) negative feelings towards Ryan, what with his whole being a rich sleaze who had an affair with a 17yo, but really as the first season went on Ryan became more and more of a sympathetic character. Now Iā€™m not delusional, I know heā€™s not going to morph into an ideal father figure overnight. But I want him to work to be a part of Nancyā€™s life, and I want Nancy to let him. I want her to understand that yes Ryan has fucked up a lot of times, but he is capable of growth and redemption. And slowly but surely, despite her best efforts, he weasels his slightly smarmy little way into her heart. If weā€™re getting specific maybe Nancy can be abducted (again) and Carson and Ryan have to team up to rescue her.
Three, Nancy forgive Kate. Sheā€™s dead and she loved you and she was your mother whether or not she gave birth to you. Come on, you can do it.
Four. *deep inhale* Listen. I understand I am firmly in the minority here in a fandom filled with Nancy/Ace shippers, but I want Nick and Nancy to happen. As George and Nick slowly fall apart, I want Nancy to resist being there for Nick, to tell him he should really be going to George with these problems, and maybe they have a moment where Nancy falls off a step and Nick catches her and theyā€™re super close for a second before JUMPING apart and immediately avoid each other for a while. I want Nancy to have feelings and fight them because she and George are on good terms and she knows Nick is good for George, and doesnā€™t want to do anything to jeopardize that friendship or their relationship.
Five, apparently Nancy is getting a new love interest 2 days after Ow*nā€™s death and I may have hated him but she was fairly into him and as such I am not here for it. Go away new love interest. We donā€™t want you here.
Dead Lucy
I donā€™t care in what capacity she is present but listen I NEED my dead traumatized daughter in this show okay? Dead Lucy is my hands down favorite character and I love and support her and if she moves on or finds peace or whatever after sticking around for 20 years just because I will RIOT. But specific wants, just a couple.
One, I have a scene in my head. It is a very specific scene. Nancy is on the bluffs and she turns around, and Lucy is there. Not screaming, not haunting, just there. Nancy is afraid to move, afraid to blink, afraid to breathe. But slowly, she walks up to Lucy. Lucy is standing there, bedraggled and dead, staring at her daughter who grew up to be so beautiful. Nancy is right in front of her. Lucy slowly lifts a hand to touch her cheek and Nancy gasps a little because she canā€™t quite feel it, not really, but almost. She whispers ā€˜hi momā€™ and closes her eyes, thereā€™s a wind, and Lucy is gone.
Two, I want a Lucy vs Aglaeca showdown. I have no idea what they have planned for the Aglaeca origin story, and itā€™s fairly likely she will have been victimized by the Marvin family somehow, but right now she is going after Nancy and Lucy is not going to stand for it. Aglaeca shows up to try and take their souls and then Lucy goes all Molly Weasley on her ass and does that deathly scream thing and TACKLES the Aglaeca, and then screams her off just like ā€œNOT MY DAUGHTER YOU BITCH.ā€ and buys the Drew Crew time to do whatever Aglaeca banishing ritual they need to do. That would be nifty.
Thatā€™s it
Wow this post turned out to be a lot longer than I expected but there you have it. Hit me up in the notes or in my asks, lmk what you guys want to see for season 2. Oh but please bare in mind, I do live in CA and so see this show three hours after anyone living on the East Coast, and will be actively avoiding spoilers.
Canā€™t wait until tonight when 2x1, The Search for the Midnight Wraith airs. Stay tuned for my review xo

Every episode of Camp Camp ranked: A very (non)objective list
It's well past the time of year when Season 5 of Camp Camp would've dropped. I fully understand and support it not coming out; the crew's health and safety are much more important than a comfort show.
However . . . man, would it be nice to have some comfort right now.
So I'm reliving the entire series! I've been known to share with the world a whole bunch of Spicy Hot Takes, but I've never really sat down and talked about my feelings about the show as a whole.Ā
And what's the best way to do that? Well, just ask Jenny Nicholson: a numbered list! That is, here's the series ranked from worst episode to best, because I want to get the negativity out of the way early and focus on everything I love (and because people enjoy complaining, so letā€™s frontload all that).Ā
The takes will be hot. The feelings will be intense. The post, I'm assuming, will be largely unread.
Let's do it!
Oh and duh, there are spoilers. I tried to keep it pretty chill, but youā€™ll want to have watched the whole show or just not care about spoilers before going forward.
Also slashes in the middle ofĀ ā€œnaughty wordsā€ are meant to prevent this from being kept out of the main tags. Who knows if itā€™ll work? I donā€™t.
60. Who Peed the Lake? (Season 4, epis/sode 3)
Tumblr media
Ah, good ol' Pi/ss Lake (or as @hopefullypessimistic84ā€‹ calls it because she's funnier than any of us will ever be, ā€œPis/s Fe/tish Dot Comā€). Terrible, one of the few Iā€™d consider nigh unwatchable. I actually kind of love this episode for being such great shorthand for "the absolute worst one."
Who signed off on an entire episode centered around Sherlock Holmes meets a bad om/o joke? Give me names and addresses: I just want to talk.
59. Reigny Day (Season 1, episode 6)
Tumblr media
And nobody was surprised.
I'll admit I'm more willing to defend this episode than many people, but it's not . . . like, good. It seemed okay when there were only 11 other episodes to compare it to, but now that there have been so many bangers, this comes across as extremely weak.Ā
And letā€™s just say the Na/zi jokes hit a lot differently in 2020 than they did in the summer of 2016.
Iā€™m overall happy with the direction the showrunners have moved Dolphā€™s character in, and I canā€™t totally blame them for using a kind of humor that was fairly common in the pre-Trump era, but yikes, this has aged like milk. And it wasnā€™t even very funny at the time, so it aged like milk that was already pretty bad to begin with.
58. Squirrel Camp (Season 4, episode 10)
Tumblr media
This is a dumb one.
Not much else to say; itā€™s just kinda stupid and lame.
57. Fashion Victims (Season 4, episode 13)
Tumblr media
I love Sasha, but this is filler. Which isnā€™t in itself a bad thing -- I have a couple episodes near the top that could reasonably be called filler, and a valid argument could easily be made thatĀ ā€œfiller episodesā€ donā€™t actually exist in a show with no plot -- but as much as I adore the Flower Scouts and enjoy the handful of good moments we get in this episode . . . who cares?Ā Does anyone really give a sh/it about anything that happens here? Does anyone get their life from this one?
I didnā€™t think so.
56. Foreign Exchange Campers (Season 3, episode 3)
Tumblr media
I know, I know, your Russian waifu came from this episode. Why do you think itā€™s so low on this list?
Okay, for real: this is . . . fine. Itā€™s fine. Itā€™s fine? Iā€™m not mad at it, it just feels tonally incongruous and not very memorable beyond the fact that the fandom got really weird and kinda gross about Vera. But the episode itself? Thereā€™s some cute stuff with Neil and Nikki being jealous, but for the most part itā€™s a big hunk of white bread with some super mild white cheese thatā€™s kinda soggy from sitting in a bag for too long and getting all condensation-y.Ā
That is to say: itā€™s fine.
ETA: Space Kid does sayĀ ā€œfu/ck.ā€ I canā€™t decide if thatā€™s a point in the episodeā€™s favor or against it.
This is the last of what Iā€™d call theĀ ā€œbadā€ episodes. Everything after this ranges from mediocre to mind-blowingly amazing. But whatever our failing tier of Camp Camp episodes is, it stops right about here.Ā
Onto the good stuff!
55. Night of the Living Ill (Season 2 Halloween episode)
Tumblr media
I keep switching this withĀ ā€œEggs Benefits,ā€ which probably means they should be tied. But whatever, this is my list and I am in charge and Iā€™ve finally decided, after like 5 changes, that I like this one a little bit less.
Itā€™s a fun Romero parody with nothing Iā€™d call bad. Really this oneā€™s only so low on the list because I think itā€™s kinda icky, and looking at those green snotty faces makes me queasy. If you think this is a bad reason to put it near the bottom of the list, then make your own post.
54. Cameron Campbell Can't Handle the Truth Serum (Season 4, episode 11)
Tumblr media
I . . . donā€™t remember this at all.Ā I initially had it a bit higher because I tend to love things with Campbell in them, but then I realized that nothing about this episode stuck in my brain even a little bit.Ā
Oh, this is theĀ ā€œDolph has autismā€ episode that made everyone either extremely happy or really mad? Okay. I guess thatā€™s the most remarkable thing about it. Neato.
Cam, I love you, but this was just not the best use of your sleazy charm.
53. Eggs Benefits (Season 2, episode 9)
Tumblr media
This is one of those episodes with enough cute moments and good ideas to save it from being totally unmemorable, and I mostly enjoy rewatching. Platypus being a mom is a fabulous idea, and pairing the campers the way they did was mostly really interesting and fun.
The Preston-Nurf stuff takes it down several pretty significant notches, though. Itā€™s what the kids would call problematic, and while I normally enjoy how the show doesnā€™t skew away from darker themes and jokes, it didnā€™t really fit either of their characters and just . . . isnā€™t fun to watch. Itā€™s not especially funny, itā€™s not especially tragic, itā€™s just uncomfortable.
52. Camp Campbell Wants YOU! (Season 1, episode 0)
Tumblr media
Honestly, this would be a lot higher if it was a full-length episode. Itā€™s funny.
The next 5 or so episodes fall under theĀ ā€œcute but not very memorableā€ umbrella:
51. Nikki's Last Day on Earth (Season 3, episode 4)
Tumblr media
I love the ensemble episodes, so this was always going to score higher than any of the single-characterĀ ā€œmehā€ eps. I didnā€™t see the twist coming, though I know a lot of other fans did. Textbook example ofĀ ā€œcute but not very memorableā€ -- the Platonic ideal of that concept.
50. The Candy Kingpin (Season 3, episode 9)
Tumblr media
A clever idea that plays on Maxā€™s worst characteristics and then calls him out for them, while also giving Dolph some much-needed character development. Unfortunately, I donā€™t feel like it really picks up until the last third of the episode, leaving the rest just kind of sitting there.
49. Campfire Tales (Season 4, episode 13)
Tumblr media
Who doesnā€™t love campfire stories?
Thatā€™s all I got. Theyā€™re campfire stories.
ETA: OH SH/IT THIS ONE HAS THAT REALLY SCARY STORY! Where Davidā€™s all like . . . Slendermanā€™d. Fu/ck, I didnā€™t remember that until I was writing out my thoughts for #35 or so. That definitely elevates it, but Iā€™m too tired to try and re-decide where this should go, so just tie it withĀ ā€œNew Adventure!ā€
48. New Adventure! (Season 4, episode 4)
Tumblr media
New trio! Focusing on these 3 was a definite risk, and I think it really paid off. While theĀ ā€œplotā€ itself isnā€™t anything special, there are a handful of really great side gags (hi, Dirty Kevin!!!!) and itā€™s fun to see these three interact. They all get some nice character beats. Itā€™s a good time.
47. Something Fishy (Season 3, episode 8)
Tumblr media
This mightā€™ve hit me harder if Iā€™d actually seen The Shape of Water, but the send-up works fine without having more than the seen-the-trailer level of understanding. Gwen dresses pretty, which I love; Max sucks, which I also love. What drags this one down is mostly feeling like the surreal aspects of the comedy go a bit too far into theĀ ā€œwhat the fu/ck am I looking at?ā€ territory without really . . . making an actual joke beyond ā€œlook! Wacky!"
Why is David at the opera with a bird? Why??
46. City Survival (Season 3, episode 11)
Tumblr media
Literally do not remember a single thing about this episode except David getting mugged and being called aĀ ā€œhomeless twi/nk.ā€ That should probably rank it lower on the list, but David being a fluttery mother hen saves it for me -- as does the fact that it leads directly into one of my favorite episodes, and the single best story arc of the series.
Next set of episodes is what Iā€™m going to arbitrarily callĀ ā€œokay! but like the good kind of okay, not the bad kind.ā€
45. Bonjour Bonquisha (Season 2, episode 7)
Tumblr media
Max and Sasha masterminding a scheme is really fun; their dynamic is great (though it wonā€™t be fully realized until Season 4), and heartbroken David is so tragically cute it actually makes my heart explode out of my chest.
Also I canā€™t resist a goodĀ ā€œ3 kids in a trench coatā€ gag.
44. Anti-Social Network (Season 2, episode 2)
Tumblr media
Neil is very relatable and I donā€™t have much else to say about this one. Itā€™s fun to see an episode that more heavily focuses on our nerdy science boy, and Max and Neil teaming up to save Nikki was really charming and sweet and set my Makkiel ship out to sea.
43. A Camp Camp Christmas, or Whatever (Season 2 holiday episode)
Tumblr media
Why does this episode have a musical number? Itā€™s not good.
Okay, that was mean. This is fun and cute and Gwen wears a pretty purple sweatshirt and Space Kid gives her a present and itā€™s really sweet. But that musical number is an instant fast-forward for me, sorry.
42. Preston Goodplay's Good Play (Season 4, episode 7)
Tumblr media
We get some Preston character development! Awesome!
Itā€™s done in a really trippy and surreal way that totally fits his character and heightens the drama of the episode! Awesome!
David has an apparently-tragic history of being a French mime! Not a good call!Ā
Next tier: Some good sh/it! (Tbh, these could all be put in just about any order; they might as well be one massive tie.)
41. Cookin' Cookies (Season 2, episode 11)
Tumblr media
I love the Flower Scouts. I love Dirty Kevin. I love the idea of accidentally starting a dru/g empire. Another weird, borderline experimental one focusing on side characters, and I think it works better thanĀ ā€œNew Adventure!ā€ because the scale of the melodrama is just so over-the-top.
The fact that this is in the bottom 20 but I have nothing but good things to say about it illustrates how dang good this show is. Itā€™s only getting better from here, folks!
40. Romeo & Juliet II: Love Resurrected (Season 1, episode 7)
Tumblr media
Preston is a terrible playwright. This makes sense, because heā€™s like 11, but heā€™s the kind of hilariously bad I wish Iā€™d been as a preteen, because his play is absolutely bonkers. Max fucking with David is great, Tabii vs. Bonquisha is great, Bonquisha in general is a giant amazonian goddess and I want to be swept up into her giant arms. Neil is . . . a robot, for some reason?
So much fun!
39.Ā Camp Cool Kidz (Season 1, episode 4)
Tumblr media
I donā€™t love Eredā€™s characterization in this one, but there are a lot of wacky hijinks in this episode that I think make it really enjoyable. Maxā€™s wide-eyed revolutionary naĆÆvetĆ© is a fun change from his usual dour pessimism, and Nikkiā€™s loyalty to Ered is both very gay and very charming. Plus we get to learn a bit more about how the camp operates (and fails to operate), and itā€™s a nice way to better establish the campsite as its own setting.
(Definitely thinkĀ ā€œCoolā€ shouldā€™ve been spelled with a K though. But whatever, I donā€™t write for the show.)
38. Scout's Dishonor (Season 1, episode 3)
Tumblr media
The birth of Neeancy! The introduction of the Flower and Wood Scouts! Neil sayingĀ ā€œcu/ntā€ -- one of the first and only truly shocking uses of profanity in the entire show! ZUKO!
I donā€™t know if my fondness for this one is rooted mostly in nostalgia or if it was actually really fun, but I enjoyed the he/ll out of it. Not as highly-rated as some other episodes mostly because it doesnā€™t really do anything, character or story-wise, but not every episode needs to be a massive game-changer that drowns us in feels. Sometimes itā€™s enough to have a fun romp, and this is very that.
37.Ā Ered Gets Her Cool Back (Season 3, episode 2)
Tumblr media
Awww, Ered. I have a soft spot for her, because I love the archetype of a spoiled bit/ch clearly still figuring out how to be a person and have friends. You really get the sense of her as a teenager trying to sort her shi/t out in this episode, which I would love to see more of. Her interactions with Nerris are top-tier, and I like that itā€™s a continuation of how her characterā€™s been softening since Season 1 into this kind of big-sister figure.
Also, all the female campers in this show are lesbians. I do not make the rules.
36. Attack of the Nurfs (Season 4, episode 2)
Tumblr media
I feel like this is a pretty underrated episode. But then again, I feel like Nurf is a pretty underrated character, so maybe thatā€™s just my own personal bias.
I really enjoyed all the different iterations of Nurf, and I think Blaine did a killer job giving each one its own personality and life. Itā€™s a fun episode that plays hard with cartoon physics (a 3D printer printing people! I love it!) and has a surprisingly moving ending.
At least, thatā€™s what I think. Most other people seem to find this one pretty forgettable. Again: make your own da/mn list. I liked it.
35. Mascot (Season 1, episode 2)
Tumblr media
This entire episode is memorable for so many things, but a few of my favorites:
David is established as kind of a di/ck.
Platypus arrives and kicks all the as/s.
Quartermaster is the best.
Nerris, Harrison, and Space Kid all get little moments to show off how cute they are.
Neil and Nikki bonding.
This:

34. Quest to Sleepy Peak Peak (Season 2, episode 3)
Tumblr media
I love watching Nerris and Harrison bicker, and Neil and Nikki fit really well into their group. It reminds me of being a kid, and of playing Dungeons & Dragons (as an adult, because Iā€™m so cool), and of summer . . . which is a really good thing for this show. There are a lot of funny one-liners, and itā€™s just a good dang time.
33. Quartermaster Appreciation Day (Season 2, episode 6)
Tumblr media
I donā€™t think this one is all that well-loved, but I thought it was funny. There are literally zero important plot or character moments, but it made me laugh a lot, and thatā€™s all I need a Camp Camp episode to do.Ā
I love QM, and the more we learn about him, the more confused and disturbed we end up being. What a fu/cking champion.
32. Arrival of the Torso Takers (Season 3 Halloween episode)
Tumblr media
I lowkey hated this one when it came out, because I knew the Daniel stans were going to be exhausting. And they kind of were? But looking back, itā€™s a great way to reintroduce this motherfu/cker. Heā€™s a lot scarier than he was the last time around -- but also less competent, which is a great way to kick him in the proverbial ba/lls -- and while I wish it had a lot more Gwen in it, itā€™s a clever and creative Halloween episode.Ā
31. Operation: Charlie Tango Foxtrot (Season 3, episode 10)
Tumblr media
Charlie . . . Tango . . . Foxtrot . . . CTF . . . OH! Capture the Flag! I never got that before. Oh, thatā€™s neat. I love this show.
Listen, every time the writers decide to take a risk and do something bizarre and creative, Iā€™m going to be here for it at least a little bit. An entire episode told from the POV of the Woodscouts, explaining how hard they failed in all directions? A great gag where everyone in Petrolā€™s story talks in grunts? The return of Jermy Fartz?! Fantastic.Ā
30. Panicked Room (Season 4, episode 16)
Tumblr media
Listen. Iā€™m a sucker for my trash grandpa; anything Campbell-centric is probably going to be pretty good (except #54), because heā€™s just one of the most consistently funny and engaging characters. Good times are had whenever this terrible man is on the screen, and giving him a romantic backstory? A tragic romantic backstory full of mistakes and emotional damage?? One where he waited 17 YEARS for the love of his life???
We have no choice but to stan.
29. Party Pooper (Season 4, episode 15)
Tumblr media
Iā€™m so predictable. If you put Gwen in something, I will be happy. If you make an entire episode about how Gwen is under-appreciated and overworked and just trying to do her best despite the circumstances, I will dedicate my firstborn child to you.
Anyway, this episode is really sweet, and I liked the unexpected direction the writers took her relationship with her dad. He seems like a nice guy, they seem like they have a nice relationship, and . . . well, an episode about how hard it is to be an adult millennial hit pretty hard. Plus this was just a really pretty episode -- and not just because Gwen was in so much of it! Seriously, that night sky was a thing of beauty.
Also if you say a fuc/king word about Max and that godda/mn dog I will choke you out with your own intestines. Few things are more hilariously, annoyingly ironic than the fact that the entire fandom ignored and failed to appreciate Gwen . . . in the episode all about how everyone ignores and fails to appreciate Gwen.
28. Culture Day (Season 3 holiday episode)
Tumblr media
Now, would it be arrogant to point out that I had the idea for a Culture/Heritage Day back in September 2018? Yes, especially since I donā€™t think the writers ever read fanfiction and it has literally nothing to do with this episode. Will that stop me? He/ll no it will not! I am a creature of ego! Read my stuff!Ā
Anyway, this is a really fun look at Neilā€™s background, personality, and relationships. Max looking out for him is just . . . oh my god, I cannot, Iā€™ve written like 30 of these and my brain is starting to melt, but these two are so cute. I love arrogant Neil, and I love protective Max, and I love QM and Gwen fuc/king over the Flower Scouts to save the day. Everything about this episode is lovely.
27. Cameron Campbell the Camp Campbell Camper (Season 3, episode 7)
Tumblr media
This should not be ranked so high (even if these are all essentially tied). This is a dumb episode based on a really, really dumb premise.Ā
But . . . I donā€™t know what to tell you.Ā ā€œSamboy Kidwell,ā€ Max realizing he and Campbell are disturbingly similar and not liking what his future could look like, Davidā€™sĀ ā€œIā€™m not mad, Iā€™m disappointedā€ face . . . this episode happens to hit all of my favorite things. It had a really good balance of heavy-handed moralizing and goofs, it was part of the most graceful lead-up into a finale the show has ever had, and Iā€™m just all about it.Ā
Excellent job, Samboy. Count Olaf would be proud of your disguise.
There ends theĀ ā€œsome good sh/itā€ tier. Weā€™re starting to get into the really excellent stuff now!
26. Parents' Day (Season 2, episode 12)
Tumblr media
I know. You want this to be higher.Ā I hear you.
Honestly Iā€™m kind of shocked itā€™s this high; itā€™s my least favorite of the season finales so far, and I had to push past a lot of prejudice to actually rank this where I think it deserves to be, as opposed to somewhere in the like mid-40s. Mostly because it gave fuel to the raging inferno ofĀ ā€œMax has terrible parents and David should adopt himā€ headcanons, which Iā€™ve detailed my problems with extensively in the past (in a post that, statistically speaking, none of you have read).
But, trying to be objective: is this episode actually any good?
Well . . . yeah, it really is.
So much work was put into giving each of the campers families that make sense with their characters and bounce absurdly well off of them, ranging from wholesome and adorable (Nerrisā€™s family) to quietly tragic (Harrisonā€™s parents), and theyā€™re all designed so well; theyā€™re fun to look at and fun to watch interact with the kids and each other. (The only exception is Dolphā€™s dad, who is both kinda lame and misattributes the cause of the weird Na/zi thing because it did not come from Germany, I assure you. But things with Dolph are always a little off, and I donā€™t really know how you would give him a backstory that actually works with the character, so they were caught between a rock and a hard place there.)
The drama of David having to choose between the man he considers his father and the camp he considers his home is really touching, and him and Gwen choosing to take a sad camper out to get pizza instead of covering for their bossā€™s a/ss is such a beautiful moment for both of them that I canā€™t really blame the fandom for losing their mind over it. Campbellā€™s arrest leading into the arcs of the next two seasons was great as well, and the finale left us all with this weird sense of foreboding because we didnā€™t know what was going to happen next; it was the only finale that actually ended on something close to a cliffhanger, while still being satisfying enough to keep us all from melting down.
Plus, itā€™s funny. Carl and Candy are really funny and the idea of Neil and Nikkiā€™s parents boning is funny in a horrible way. The joke about Quartersister is funny. Itā€™s a good episode.
Should this be higher? Maybe, but I canā€™t bring myself to put it above the rest of these episodes. Again: make your own list.
25. Mind Freakers (Season 1, episode 10)
Tumblr media
The episode that launched a thousand ships. Assuming those ships are all Harrison/Neil, anyway.
Itā€™s hard to talk about these Season 1 episodes because they feel so classic. Like, what is there to say? Youā€™ve all seen it a couple dozen times;Ā Iā€™ve seen it a couple dozen times. Harrison is a di/ck, Neil is possibly an even bigger di/ck, and magic may or may not be real. (Though spoilers for literally every season: yes, magic is definitely real.) Itā€™s so much fun watching these two smug as/sholes snipe at each other in an almost literal playground hair-pulling way that could very easily be read as flirtation.Ā
And the fandom did most certainly read it that way, at least for a little while.
24. Gwen Gets a Job (Season 2, episode 8)
Tumblr media
Itā€™s Gwen. What, was I supposed to not put it this high?
This was the first Gwen-centric episode, and it absolutely slaps. Sheā€™s pushed to the breaking point and responds by being a cold-hearted BAMF, and it got her some pretty significant hate from fans but I donā€™t give a fu/ck, I loved it. We got to see her all dolled up, and then we got to see her all disheveled, and both of those looks were gorgeous. David gives her a tiny fragment of the love and validation she deserves (I donā€™t know if this is when gwenvid started taking off -- I think it wasnā€™t really until ā€œParentsā€™ Day,ā€ or even Season 3 -- but I ate that s/hit up).
Also, again: job hunting post-2008. Itā€™s a bad time, yā€™all. Camp Camp gets it.
23. Follow the Leader (Season 4, episode 6)
Tumblr media
Yeah, I was kind of surprised at how high this landed, too. I guess Iā€™m just a sucker for unlikely companionships, and these three have a great chemistry. The combination of competitiveness, sass, and reluctant admiration make their interactions a lot of fun. Their motivation of doing petty errands for Campbell for the sake of getting at the Box of Illegal Contraband is a great framework too, with high enough stakes to justify all sorts of wacky shenanigans without causing actual anxiety.
I want to see these characters forced to spend more time together. Please, RT, make that happen.
22. Escape from Camp Campbell (Season 1, episode 1)
Tumblr media
In terms of numbers, this feels so low, but considering everything from about #45 on is ranked as at least decent, this is actually a pretty high rating. There are 21 episodes Iā€™d call better than this, but these decisions were all pretty painful.
This introduces us to everyone! The main trio, the counselors, Mr. Campbell; we get a snapshot of the major personalities running around the camp, the major points of conflict (Max vs. David, primarily), the major building blocks of future episodes, setting, and relationships . . .Ā
Again, I donā€™t know how much of my love for this episode is nostalgia -- thereā€™s a lot of squeeing at familiar faces and gags; this is the first time David gets hit by a bus!!! -- but it was a fun and funny introduction to a series thatā€™s ended up being so important to me, and Iā€™m so grateful this wonderful, quirky little show with its wonderful and quirky little premiere.Ā
Of all the episodes, I really canā€™t look at this one objectively. Itā€™s too important.
21. The Fun-Raiser (Season 3, episode 1)
Tumblr media
David and Gwen scheming is my ki/nk. They very rarely scheme together, but every single time their teamwork makes the dream work (or, more frequently, makes the dream fail horribly and have disastrous consequences) my soul flies out of my body and takes to the stars, where I write another 500 first chapters to gwenvid fanfics Iā€™ll probably never finish.
This is a great follow-up toĀ ā€œParentsā€™ Day,ā€ where we immediately see the consequences of the previous season finale and what happens when the one adult in the camp disappears. Mr. Campbell was a terrible adult, true, but at least he was smart enough not to steal QMā€™s hook. Like . . . whose plan was this? It was so bad. These two are hilariously incompetent sometimes -- often when their bad ideas are feeding off of each other, actually, a la this andĀ ā€œSpace Camp Was a Hoaxā€ -- and watching them frantically try and keep all their balls in the air is so great.Ā
The ending is satisfying, too; a bit graphic, in keeping with a show that tends to keep the violence limited to periodic spurts of bloodshed 1-2 times a season and mostly pretty mild the rest of the time, but between Max stepping up and fixing everything while still being his shi/tty self to our dear dumba/ss counselors getting their dumb as/ses handed to them (deservedly so, if weā€™re being honest) . . . itā€™s such a great note to begin a new season on.
20. Journey to Spooky Island (Season 1, episode 5)
Tumblr media
A classic.
We get to meet our spooky boy Jasper, we get to watch the comedy trio play off each other and continue to sketch out the general contours of their friendship, and we get to see the Quartermaster with a big purple dil/do for a hand. Whatā€™s not to love?
19. The Butterfinger Effect (Season 4, episode 17)
Tumblr media
CONTROVERSIAL HOT TAKES! GET YOUR CONTROVERSIAL HOT TAKES HERE!
Iā€™ve already gone into some pretty intense detail about why I think this one is actually really good and carries the theme of embracing change that everything about Season 4 was centered around, but none of yā€™all read that so here it is in short: this episode is super funny, almost all of the campersā€™ transformations work really well as extensions of their characters while still being strange and surprising, and the fact that Nurf creates all of these problems by trying to solve them is deliciously fun to watch in a karmic sort of way.
Or maybe itā€™s just because any Nurf-centric episode is going to rank pretty highly for me. That is also possible.
18. Space Camp Was a Hoax (Season 2, episode 10)
Tumblr media
Our camp counselors being bad people: itā€™s my drug of choice.
We get Space Kid tripping balls in what might be one of the funniest sequences in the show, the entire camp coming together to try and pull off the stupidest, most impossible task (and kinda maybe almost nailing it???), and once again the fun of watching Gwen and David scramble to keep from getting caught in their bossā€™s shit/ty lies is so great. And Lindsayā€™s voice acting is absolutely killer, even more so than usual.Ā
17. Jermy Fartz (Season 2, episode 4)
Tumblr media
I get the sense this might be a somewhat controversial one.Ā
Iā€™ve written before about why I think this episode is a lot of fun, but it mostly boils down to two things: watching the campers try (and fail) to be nice to the most bully-able person on the entire planet, and the essential likeableness of Jermy.Ā
No, really.
I think a lot of people were put off by Jermyā€™s general grossness, because . . . my god is he disgusting, but heā€™s also polite and good-natured, and seems totally self aware of how difficult he is to be around, without letting it make him depressed. Heā€™s cheerful in a weirdly downbeat way thatā€™s impossible to understand until you see him in action. Heā€™s so matter-of-fact about his own awfulness in a way that I found entirely endearing. I donā€™t think Iā€™d want him at my camp, either, but get that kid to a good dermatologist and gastroenterologist, teach him some basic hygiene and social skills, and youā€™ll have quite a little gentleman there.
I do however find it hilarious that apparently David got the type of tree wrong when making fun of Jermy. Not only is that a great moment for reveling in David being an as/shole, but he didnā€™t even have the right wood. F/ucking idiot. I love him so much.
These last ones are my favorites! (Well, duh, thatā€™s how this whole ranking thing works.) Maybe not perfect, but just really good and with limitless rewatch value.
16. St. Campbell's Day (Season 4 holiday episode)
Tumblr media
They Grinchā€™d Camp Camp. Those brilliant bast/ards, they really pulled it off.
Ignoring the fact that David is truly frightening-looking for most of the episode, this is a great bookend to Season 4, following up on the theme established in the first episode about how David is a flawed and selfish human being despite trying his best not to be.
This is another one I was surprised to find so high on the list, but the more I thought about it the more I realizes how good it is. David being a jerk is always one of my favorite storylines, and the fact that the trouble comes from him trusting Mr. Campbell too little instead of too much is a nice twist on the usual formula.Ā Gwen coming to help him out despite a blistering hangover gave me aggressive shipping feels, yes, obviously.Ā
Between a lot of really funny little gags like QMā€™s failed satanic ritual and the genuinely touching moral about the importance of spending time with the people you love, itā€™s just a really lovely episode that gets just the right amount of maudlin for the holiday season.Ā
15.Ā Jasper Dies at the End (Season 2, episode 5)
Tumblr media
I kept switching this and ā€œDial M for Jasperā€; it was a really difficult decision to make, figuring out where these two belonged. I think in the end, while the John Dies at the End reference was very, very good, this one loses me a little bit by being told from Davidā€™s perspective. Now, normally the more David is in an episode the more Iā€™ll be likely to love it (see my #1 for proof of that), but his blinders when it comes to the camp and Mr. Campbell result in a really funny story, but one without the same emotional heft as hearing about what happened from Jasperā€™s point of view.
That doesnā€™t mean itā€™s not perfect for what it needs to be: each Jasper episode builds on the previous ones, and having the same intensity ofĀ ā€œDial M for Jasper,ā€ where we learn how he died and how his relationship with David fell apart, would be weird and heavy at this point. In Season 1 we just found out heā€™s a ghost (and eagle-eyed viewers realized heā€™d been a camper with David); in Season 2 we find out how David views their friendship and time at camp; and in Season 3 we get Jasperā€™s perspective. Itā€™s an absolutely wonderful raising of the stakes (for lack of a better term), but the one that packs more of an emotional punch is going to rank a bit higher than the one thatā€™s mostly just for laughs.
That being said: there are plenty of laughs in this one. Everyone -- Griffin, Miles, Travis, the animators -- nailed this one, and it gets funnier every time I watch it.
14. Camporee (Season 1, episode 11)
Tumblr media
AKA the episode where Forest realized she was in love with Gwen.Ā
What a great idea for an episode, seriously. Every coming-of-age story has a talent show or a competition or a big game -- something where the kiddos can show off their improved skills and teamwork to beat their bullies or whatever. And this show has both kinds of bullies: the popular girly girls and the violent muscleheads. What a great moment to pull everyone together and show how friendship can help us accomplish anything!
Except . . . of course thatā€™s not what happens. Of course theyā€™re absolute garbage, and of course teamwork isnā€™t the answer. Gwen is the perfect foil for David here, being the anti-teamwork, anti-Camp-Campbell adult who can perfectly and effortlessly undermine Davidā€™s relentless optimism. David wants so badly for his campers to live in the same coming-of-age summer movie he did as a child, and their staunch refusal to do that leads to a really heartbreaking closer to the episode, as well as lead into the next one. Everything about this, from the challenges to the setup to Gwen shoutingĀ ā€œwe are winning this FUC/KING trophy!ā€ is just gold.
13. David Gets Hard (Season 1, episode 9)
Tumblr media
We have David. We have Nurf. We have Gwen. We have Max trying to be helpful in the shi/ttiest way possible.
We have all the makings of a da/mn good episode. And they deliver. Not a very emotionally intense or moving one, but so, so funny.
12.Ā Dial M for Jasper (Season 3, episode 5)
Tumblr media
This isnā€™t the fate any of us expected for Jasper, and itā€™s not the fate of a lot of people wanted. But godda/mn it, it worked. The constant bait-and-switch the episode keeps playing with, where you keep waiting for something really dramatic and tragic to happen . . . and then the reality is that Jasper died because Mr. Campbell was stupid and careless, and it was all just a horribly sad accident.
Itā€™s anticlimactic, but in a way that suits the series, both as a comedic counterpoint to all the hype throughout the episode and as a way to establish that Cameron Campbell is a bad man first and foremost through selfishness and laziness, not Daniel-esque sinister evil. Jasperā€™s death was totally avoidable and totally Campbellā€™s fault, and while thatā€™s sad, it also adds a weird sort of lightness to the episode. David didnā€™t do something terrible to kill his best friend, Jasper didnā€™t kill himself, and without having actively chosen to murder a child (well, not this time), the door remains open for fans accepting Campbellā€™s later pseudo-redemption. It was just an accident, and Jasper was ā€œhauntingā€ David to tell him that he was sorry for how their friendship ended. Thatā€™s really sweet, actually.
I think itā€™s the best way this reveal couldā€™ve gone, and Iā€™m so impressed with how they pulled it all off.
11. Into Town (Season 1, episode 8)
Tumblr media
This might actually be the only flawless episode in the entire show. I mean, I call a lot of them flawless, and I mean that on an emotional level --Ā ā€œI love this so much I cannot see anything wrong with itā€ -- but this one is a masterpiece of storytelling. All the technical jumbo Iā€™m bad at, like planting and payoff and tension and all of that, is just perfect.
I feel like this is the kind of claim that needs to be backed up with a long-as/s essay full of citations and video clips and references to, like, Joseph Campbell or something, but this is my 49th entry in the list so I am not going to be doing that. Besides, I donā€™t think my English degree qualifies me to critique film/animation; I donā€™t even entirely know half the terms Iā€™ve used to compliment this episode.Ā Someone else please explain why this is such a good one.
10. The Quarter-Moon Convergence (Season 4, episode 5)
Tumblr media
Iā€™ve mentioned in other entries that the weird, surreal humor sometimes doesnā€™t work; it feels too much like being odd for its own sake, and sometimes gets so distracted in being surreal that it forgets to include anything funny or meaningful.Ā
This . . . is not one of those.
Putting Harrison and QM together is a stroke of genius; the two of them are literally the most magical beings in the entire show, and using them as the conveyance for this great Lovecraftian horror-comedy was such a good idea. I donā€™t know if weā€™ll ever see these two interact in another episode -- honestly, this felt a bit like lightning in a bottle, and I have a hard time imagining what could possibly bring them together again -- but if this is the only episode we get, it is such a fantastic one.
Harrison makes a really good everyman, despite his powers; heā€™s just the right amount of confident and insecure to pull off that wide-eyed apprentice to QMā€™s grizzled wise mentor. (The fact that QM is objectively a terrible mentor is beside the point.) I still donā€™t entirely know what the two of them accomplished, but it feels baffling and momentous, with the perfect amount of gravity to make things extremely tense all the way through to the end.
Also, I guess God is an octopus? Thatā€™s kinda cool. I like octopuses.
9. Camp Corp. (Season 3, episode 12)
Tumblr media
Another unpopular opinion? Oh ho ho, I am so contrary! I am Not Like Other Fans! I am the Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, refusing to have the same opinions of all you prepz.
I know this wasnā€™t the most well-loved episode, but I think it did a really great job tying together story threads woven throughout Season 3: Maxā€™s selfishness leading to him hurting other people, his growing realization that he cares about his friends and the camp itself, the parallels between him and Mr. Campbell (and the fact that they both get this redemption moment in the finale).Ā
This is the most Max-centric season, focusing on his flaws and character growth, and they pulled it off in a really organic way that felt faithful to his character, touching without being too maudlin. The fact that his feelings about the camp are echoed in Gwen, Neil and Nikki, the other campers, and even Mr. Campbell drives home how important the camp -- and David -- are to this strange little family.Ā
Each season, Max reluctantly becomes a better person, without changing the fundamental core of who he is. Thatā€™s a really hard putt for the writers and Michael, and Iā€™m blown away every finale by how they so consistently nail it.
8.Ā Time Crapsules (Season 4, episode 18)
Tumblr media
Gwen-centric? Check.
Max learning how to be a better person while still being the bratty kid we know and love? Check.
Looks at one of the most under-appreciated character dynamics in the entire show (i.e., Max and Gwen)? Checkity check-check-check.
I donā€™t really have much to say about this one, which I should: it was considered a pretty serious letdown to a lot of fans, and Iā€™m not sure how to explain why I loved it so much.Ā
Comparing Max fromĀ ā€œThe Order of the Sparrowā€ to Max from this episode is wild. Itā€™s not like 2 different characters: theyā€™re still very obviously the same cynical, self-absorbed 10-year-old trying to survive summer camp. But heā€™s become a more considerate friend and decent version of that kid, and itā€™s great to watch. The moment where he and Gwen go too far and immediately regret snapping at each other is still painful (on my god, the VAs in this show, theyā€™re so talented), Nikki and Neil both get nice subplots about how theyā€™re also growing up, and the ending is fuc/king hilarious, perfectly breaking the tension from Campbellā€™s speech, which is both beautifully done and important to hear, especially if youā€™re in a period of uncomfortable transition (like, say, in your late 20s, or living through about 5 different national and global catastrophes).
And okay, I found that speech on the wiki for this episode and it made me deeply emotional, so here:
Here's the thing: you've got to take your failures and make something out of them. Take Camp Campbell for instance: a lot of poor decisions went into making this place what it is today. Sure, somewhere along the line it maybe strayed from its path, not living up to the camp it wanted to be. At some point, the camp realized that the camp would never reach the end of its path until it was ready or until it gave up. So, if the camp wanted to keep embezzling money and dealing with foreign powers, so be it! But, at some point, it didn't anymore. I never saw this coming, but I'm starting to think this camp is the best it's ever been.
If this is the last episode of Camp Camp we ever get -- and for at least a little while, it looks like itā€™s going to be -- I canā€™t think of a sweeter, funnier, and more lovely bittersweet note for this show to go out on.
7. The Lake Lilac Summer Social (Season 3, episode 6)
Tumblr media
And again: No one was surprised.Ā
This is the longest non-finale episode of the show, and it uses that time perfectly. Rather than having some big emotional moments and character arcs -- which are great, donā€™t get me wrong -- the writers use the extended time to build a series of shenanigans as complicated as Gwenā€™s matchmaking web, and watching her try to set up a series of dominos (with David, for once, being the responsible, level-headed one) is almost as satisfying as the catastrophic results.Ā
Neil and Snake steal this episode, even from someone as in love with Gwen as I am, and for an episode thatā€™s largely about making fun of shippers, there hasnā€™t been one that launched nearly as many ships as this. Neil/Snake? Tabii/Erin? Max/Nikki? GWENVID?! Itā€™s all here, and I am here for it.
It was also fun to get a traditional episode setup in a very non-traditional show. I assume this means the beach and/or hot springs episode is forthcoming. (No, Pis/s Lake doesnā€™t count. Obviously it doesnā€™t count.)
6. Keep the Change (Season 4, episode 1)
Tumblr media
Again, this is an episode Iā€™ve said a lot about in the past -- and I was pretty uncharitable toward Season 3, which in retrospect was very unse/xy of me -- but I stand by a lot of my opinions then: this is a fu/cking great episode.
David is an as/shole, Max is an as/shole, Campbell is an as/shole. No one escapes the as/sholery. David schemes, Max catches him in the scheme, Campbell gets drunk and kind of gay . . . Iā€™m 54 entries into this list and I donā€™t have much to say anymore: itā€™s just really good and fun and I love it.
5. Camp Loser Says What? (Season 4, episode 9)
Tumblr media
This is another one I kind of hated when it came out, and again for fandom-related and personal-grudge reasons.
Fu/cking Daniel.Ā That motherfu/cker. He shows up for 12 minutes and Tumblr bursts into flames. Every single time.
However, itā€™s really hard not to love this one. Daniel-as-Trump is a clever but subtle -- I mean, for this showā€™s definition of subtle -- allegory, and itā€™s amazing how much this slimy freak and the Woodscouts slot into it. David is a bise/xual disaster with the absolute worst taste in men, Dirty Kevin and Daniel are onscreen together for all of 2.5 seconds and the kevdan shippers lost their minds, and Xemug looks like Megamind for some weird reason.
My only minor complaint is that the ending is a bit anticlimactic, but it plays on Danielā€™s stupidity and the value of teamwork, so itā€™s a very small nitpick in an episode that mostly works like gangbusters.
4. Cult Camp (Season 2, episode 1)
Tumblr media
Duh. Thereā€™s a really good song and weā€™re introduced to a charismatic, sinister, and totally dumba/ss villain. Whatā€™s not to like?
I donā€™t think I even need to say anything about this episode. Season 2 started off the summer by throwing a lit firecracker directly at the viewerā€™s face, and ignoring the fact that we as a fandom proceeded to eat each other, itā€™s impossible not to get caught up in the episodeā€™s wild energy.
And dude, that song. Fabulous. Fu/ck Daniel, but thank god heā€™s around to be such a prickly little pri/ck.
Now for the top 3: Literally perfect, wouldnā€™t change a single solitary thing.
3. After Hours (Season 4, episode 8)
Tumblr media
Iā€™m not sure anyone loved this episode as much as me. But this is my list, and I will put this up at the top if I want to and you cannot stop me.
Itā€™s much easier in a lot of ways to talk about the episodes I hated than the ones I love this much. What do I say besidesĀ ā€œliterally everything about this fills me with joy and my life is better because it existsā€? I donā€™t know. The counselors are my favorite characters, and between Gwen and QM having the weirdest bonding experience, Gwen getting to meet up with people who care about her silly fanfiction, Mr. Campbell being the trash grandpa of my dreams, David getting in way over his head . . . itā€™s the episode I always wanted, and they made it work so well.
Also, I just discovered thatĀ ā€œGwen Isnā€™t Your Mother So Stop Asking Her to Rinse Your Dishesā€ is an actual song and I am overwhelmed with delight. Here, Iā€™m embedding it as well as linking because itā€™s so good:
youtube
God. This show. What the fu/ck even is up with this amazing, weird-as/s show.
2. The Order of the Sparrow (Season 1, episode 12)
Tumblr media
Duh.
The entire first season is a great time (exceptĀ ā€œReigny Dayā€), but itā€™s a pretty low-stakes kind of great time. There isnā€™t much in terms of emotional depth until the very end ofĀ ā€œCamporee,ā€ despite some hints at darker themes in one-off jokes and quick asides, so this episode comes a bit out of left field, tonally speaking.
But thatā€™s not a bug, itā€™s a feature; if the show had been this overtly emotional from the outset, this finale wouldnā€™t hit as hard, and the rest of the season wouldnā€™t be as funny.Ā
This manages to serve as a capstone to the conflict of the first season, building on episodes likeĀ ā€œInto Townā€ andĀ ā€œEscape from Camp Campbellā€ in a way that feels totally natural for both David and Maxā€™s characters while revealing new sides of them. It works because itā€™s so unexpected, but it doesnā€™t come across as incongruous with their personalities. Itā€™s the first and only time David swears in all 4 seasons, and that line -- I donā€™t even need to say it, you know exactly what Iā€™m talking about -- still gives me chills.
Also, Gwen sings the camp theme song. Impossible not to cherish.
1. The Forest (Season 4, episode 12)
Tumblr media
Iā€™m not sure if this one is a surprise or not. It might be the obvious first place, or it might be a bit of an oddball for some people.
I had a really hard time choosing between this andĀ ā€œThe Order of the Sparrowā€; I switched their places half a dozen times, and the difference in quality between the two is razor-thin. I think part of that is because it accomplishes a lot of whatĀ ā€œOrder of the Sparrowā€ does: puts David in a situation where heā€™s pushed to his absolute emotional and physical capacity, crushes every shred of hope he has left, and sees what heā€™s actually made of when you strip everything away. Itā€™s much more dramatic this time around, but itā€™s the same basic concept.
And just like in the Season 1 finale, what we see is a man whoā€™s determined to do good even when he isnā€™t rewarded for it, even when heā€™s actively punished for it. Who wants to love nature, and life, and make the world a better place -- despite his faults, his selfishness and thoughtlessness and anger, David proves that he is fundamentally kind. Heā€™s not nearly as deludedly optimistic as he seems; he just refuses to stop trying.
Because somebody fuc/king has to.
Iā€™ll admit, some of what puts this one in first place is that Iā€™m a sucker for whump, and David really goes through the ringer. However, I also think itā€™s important to acknowledge the risk Joe Nicolosi took with writing this episode: itā€™s all centered around a single character, itā€™s darker and more viscerally bloody than any other episode in the showā€™s history, the art is focused on these grand sweeping backgrounds that mustā€™ve taken forever to paint, and thereā€™s very little talking in a show that runs 99% on clever dialogue.Ā This could have so easily backfired -- and for some fans it did -- but it was brave and beautiful and breathtaking.
Iā€™ve actually only watched this in full once. Itā€™s really hard to get through; itā€™s just so intense and even disturbing. But if thereā€™s one episode I'll remember for the rest of my life, even when Iā€™m 80 years old and havenā€™t seen the show in years, itā€™ll beĀ ā€œThe Forest.ā€
Itā€™s funny how such a sharp departure from the format and style of the rest of the show somehow manages to perfectly capture the heart of it. Talk about a fuc/king achievement.
So what have we learned?
I donā€™t entirely know what the purpose of this whole exercise was. I think it was mostly to get myself a nice Camp Camp fix that came from something other than slogging through 20 different fanfic WIPs, and to remind myself of what a strange and fun ride the last 4 summers have been.Ā
I also wanted to take a moment to acknowledge what Camp Camp means to me. This show has been hugely important to me on a personal level: I met two of my best friends through this fandom, and Iā€™ve never been more connected to a community or readers than I have with CC. I know I bi/tch about this fandom a lot, but itā€™s a big extended internet family, and Iā€™m so happy to be a part of it. Going through all these episodes, getting the chance to ramble about the things I liked and the things I didnā€™t, was a great way to reconnect with a series and community that I love.
So . . . what have we learned?
1. Season 4 was all over the place.
Some of this has to be due to the sheer volume of episodes, but when I sat down and organized everything into tiers:
Tumblr media
There isnā€™t a single category Season 4 doesnā€™t have at least one episode in. I was surprised to see how high a lot of them ended up; it really was the best and worst of the show so far.
For the fun of it, I decided to give a number to each placement -- 60 points for the #1 episode, 59 for #2, etc. -- and see how each season broke down. Because thatā€™s that kind of thing I think is worthwhile, apparently. And . . .
2. Seasons 1 and 4 are really good, actually.
Tumblr media
Well, I donā€™t think anyoneā€™s surprised to see how well Season 1 stacked up; it was amazing. But I was surprised to see how much I ended up enjoying Seasons 3 and 4, when if youā€™d asked me before this little project, I wouldā€™ve said they were the most underwhelming. Maybe I messed up the numbers a bit -- Iā€™m no mathmagician -- but not only are they all really close, but Season 4 was one of my favorites.
3. This entire show is really good, actually.
One thing that really struck me when I put it all together visually is how most of the episodes sit in theĀ ā€œgood,ā€Ā ā€œreally good,ā€ orĀ ā€œamazingā€ categories. The amount of episodes that are memorable, fun, and/or emotionally resonant is crazy. I donā€™t now how many other tiny cult-hit web series can say the same, honestly, and all of the writers, animators, directors/producers/other people whose jobs I donā€™t really understand, and voice actors should be commended for their outstanding talent and hard work.
4. Thank you, Camp Camp.
It was a real pleasure to relive all of these episodes again and think about what they meant to me. It wonā€™t be the last time I sit down and watch this show -- and it certainly wonā€™t be the end of my being a shrieking fangirl over it -- but with this break, where we have to get through a blazing, extremely difficult summer without a new season to fawn over, itā€™s nice to stop and appreciate what a precious gem of a show this is.
I hope everyone involved with Rooster TeethĀ is taking a much-deserved rest and prioritizing their health and well-being. Thank you for creating something truly special, and I canā€™t wait to see what happens next.

Note
What did you think of the latest SCK episode? Iā€™m torn. There were some really good scenes, but \insert annoyed sigh\ there was also Celine.
Actually, I really enjoyed it. I watched it last night and then immediately rewatched. There was so much Edser goodness and enough emotional movement that it kept the shipper in me happy even though I am dying for resolution to the secret.Ā Ā
I'll get to Selin and all the delicious Eda/Serkan down below, but I have to give props to some of the side stories this ep. Erdeem humor is hit or miss for me, but this episode it was a hit. The entire montage of the security camera footage had me laughing out loud. Literal, loud belly laughs, my neighbors could probably hear me. The whole scene was gold from the hilarious footage to the reactions. Erdeem was probably the best, but shout out to Leila photocopying herself, who doesn't want to do that? Then there was the reactions, Engin and Piril being mortified, Efe looking guilty and nervous worrying about what they were going to see, Ferit not being able to hold it together. The way he was turning and laughing sort of charmed me, I wasn't sure if that was acting, or if Cagri was breaking during the scene, or both. Either way, it worked, and I loved it. The only thing missing in the scene was Serkan, because Kerem's reaction expressions would have been amazing.
This got LONG so Iā€™ll put the rest beneath the read more:
Loved Aydan getting out of the house and fully joining Team Edser. It's self-serving to some extent because she rightly thinks that losing Eda due to the secret is the wedge driving Serkan away from her. However, to give her props, the breakup also made her recognize how deep and real Serkan's feelings are, actually Eda's too, and I think she genuinely wants both of them to be happy. Now can we have Seyfi and Aydan actively matchmaking? This would be great after Eda finds out since I assume she's going to be angry and need time to process, so there probably won't be an immediate reconciliation. AySey to the rescue!Ā
Ayfer on the other hand needs to chill. Most of the time her end advice "protect your heart" is good, but her overreactions and mocking judgements are annoying. It's got to be clear to her that Eda and Serkan love each other and are working through some things, and there is no need for her to wade into it constantly. Eda is an adult and can make her own decisions and mistakes.Ā  As for the other couples Engin and Piril can be funny, but I have no idea what they see in each other and could not be more mismatched so I'm not sure where it's going. As for Ceren and Ferit, I don't understand what Ferit did to upset her throughout the episode, I don't think he did either, but he was sweet about it. I like him more and more. And welcome back Melo! A breath of fresh air.
Now on to the best stuff. The number of heart-felt declarations this episode between Eda and Serkan warmed my cold, icy heart. The fact that they are broken up, but at the same time are at the point of just letting their feelings hang out there for the other to see is super fun to watch.Ā Ā
Eda believing in Serkan when no one else did, and then being determined to find out what happened and bring the culprit to justice is as romantic as it gets. You go, girl! She might be so mad at him, and so annoyed at him, or even feeling hurt, but at the end of the day she is gonna be in his corner no matter what. That's love.Ā
Serkan on the other hand. Serkan, Serkan, Serkan. He can't have her around, but he also can't be apart from her. The poor dear is being pulled in half by a tornado created by his own intense desire to be with her fighting against his noble intentions. It's not fair to Eda at all, but his see-sawing should give her every indication that he loves her and is wrestling with something huge. For his part, I hope he's starting to catch a clue on the depth of Eda's feelings. "You want me to leave, because you're afraid of the woman who loves youĀ  more than anything."Ā  Seriously. Seriously!?!!? Wow. She'd never told him she loved him, just that their feelings were mutual. He's always feared that he doesn't deserve her and she'll get tired of him. Well she's standing there, with a broken heart and a bruised ego after he took Selin's side, and still telling him that she loves him more than anyone. He also looked absolutely wrecked, as he should, when she said he had just discarded her. He never wanted her to feel that way.Ā
On the other hand, I'm not sure Eda fully digested some of his avowals. "I only trust you." HUGE. Eps 7-9 told us everything we need to know about his trust issues. He loves easier than he trusts. We knew how much he loves her, but now we know not only does he trust her, she's the only one he trusts. Swoon. That was huge for him to admit, Eda, HUGE. But also, "I have never valued anyone as much as you." Once again, hugeĀ and a huge breakup fail. I don't blame Eda for not realizing the full weight of these declarations, he says them, but they're apart. Still, you take those and add to the way he can't stay away from her, how he's personally invested in her professionally, actively mentoring her, the password (oh man did I love that), the photo, the mug. Lots of evidence of his real feelings piling up there, Eda.Ā Ā
Which leads to the fact that we're at the point where the pain/gain assessment for Plan A (breaking up to protect her) is in the red. Meaning it's starting to cause more pain than it's prevented. That's where we get to Selin, because she unwittingly pushed things forward for them this episode. I'm not sure what's motivating her, because she seems like a character that would have too much pride to put herself in the position of having to watch a love sick Serkan chase around after Eda like a heartbroken puppy. However, Selin's feelings are in no way the point on this show. They simply don't matter, because in this instance she is a device. A device to ratchet up the tension between Eda and Serkan. A device to drive Eda's impulsivity and showcase a bit of her jealousy. A device to show that Serkan is so far gone over Eda, he doesn't even notice another woman vying for his attention. Also it gave us this:
"I never loved Selin."
Okay, Serkan. I DIED. Like we been knew, but know we KNOW, and we know that he knows. His relationship with Selin was 100% habit and convenience. That also pretty much tells us that Eda is his first and only real love, which makes the way it's changed him so tangible and believable. Also, more importantly than the audience knowing he never loved Selin, now Eda knows. I get Eda's frustration with Serkan not being annoyed at Selin, but she's missing the point that Selin is simply not important enough for him to care. She doesn't rouse any sort of emotion from him, the way he treats her is all fueled by professional duty and personal guilt. The scene in the office was unfortunate, and I wish Serkan hadn't lost his temper, (but not really because it drove their most important conversations) but Eda's impulsivity sort of led it to that place. I get why Eda suspected Selin, in her shoes I probably would have done the same thing, but I also think Serkan is not putting Selin on a pedestal by knowing that she had nothing to do with the sabotage. And Serkan getting angry was the only thing that got Eda to back down, so it was a very inelegant way of de-escalating the situation. On the plus side, it gave us Serkan trying to make things right for the rest of the episode which was amazing. I will never be over the library scene, the autumn walk scene, Eda being his first guest in the new apartment scene.Ā Ć§ok romantik!
As for Selin, look, she's ANNOYING. I'm right there with you. The character is entirely self-absorbed and while I think her motivations are murky at best, I think she's driven in part by competition with Eda. Eda won the war when it comes to Serkan, but Selin is still trying to take a battle or two in order to save face. On another note, she spent most of the episode knowing there was a saboteur, that Serkan suspected Efe, and still didn't put 2 and 2 together with the direct threats Efe made towards Serkan in her presence. Seriously, if something doesn't directly affect her, she can't even retain the information. What a useless lump she is.Ā
Thank you Aydan, for calling out how ridiculous it was that she didn't go to a hotel. I love that Selin was probably like, "Wasn't she on my side the last time I saw her?" Hilarious. Serkan allowing her to stay there, when she wouldn't have been welcome while they were together, was eyeroll inducing. But I think Selin is such a nonissue for him, that he just could not wrap his head around why it was bothering Eda so much. Also his guilt. The thing that makes the game that Serkan was playing with her forgivable, is the fact that he actually feels bad about the part he played in her life falling apart. I'm not saying it was his fault, but he rightly feels guilty.Ā
However, from that last scene, I think he's going to learn a hard lesson about guilt getting in the way of common sense. Eda is now ready to push him to his jealousy limit!Ā  That final scene escalated quickly, but I think both of them were driven by a fair bit of pride combined with the frayed nerves that have to come with being broken up while they're both still currently, and obviously, in a romantic relationship with one another.
That's hard and I wholeheartedly look forward to them navigating that next episode. From the Fragman it looks like it's all finally coming to a head. Can't wait!

Mandalorian Season 1 Finale predictions
Or: how all those ā€˜Filler Episodesā€™ are foreshadowing the end of Season 1.Ā
(Take 2 because tumblr ate the original)
Contains Ā so many spoilers for The Mandalorian, Episodes 1 thru 7.
Aight, so.
Episode 7 of The Mandalorian walks up to you with a baseball bat and beats you over the head. It opens with Mando receiving a ā€˜plea for helpā€™ from Greef Karga that raises more red flags than a Soviet Convention. While our protagonist can clearly see every single one of these red flags, the idea of getting the heat off his tail is just too tempting. Who can blame him?
Mando, proving to be Genre savvy, heads out, looking for backup.Of course, it all goes to hell anyway.
In Episode 7, we bring back characters from previous episodes and we also bring back certain aspects of Mando himself.
Hoo boy this is a long one. Iā€™ll give you my best guesses for what goes down in Episode 8.
Episodes 1-3: The main plot line of course.
1-Greef Karga is a man of honor, same as Mando. His personal sense of honor is different than that of a Mandalorian of course, and itā€™s built around the Bounty hunterā€™s guild. But the honor is there, and it comes out in Episode 7.
(I find it really funny that Greef hasnā€™t repaired the hole in his jacket, FYI. Looks like he still has the beskar plates in there too.)
2-Kuiil and IG-11.
3-Episode 3 showed us that Mando can go on a rampage of destruction when he feels the need. It was not a heavily planned out rampage, clearly the plan was made up as he went along, but he is clearly a good improviser.
4-We were introduced to the Mandalorian clan on Navarro, even if it is pretty clearly stated that theyā€™ve moved after Ep 3. Or were planning to before the Imperials rolled in.
5- Mando does have a short temper when heā€™s been having a rough go for a bit, look at him using his flamethrower to ā€˜negotiateā€™ with the Jawas.
6-He hates droids, but he is willing to work with one and can form something of a bondā€¦ not enough to let the droid kill a child though.
Episode 4: Hey look! Itā€™s Cara Dune!
1-Episode 4 introduced us to Cara, and the fact that she and Mando can go toe to toe. The brief scene of her and Mando talking after their initial fight tells us a lot about her: Sheā€™s a shock trooper for the new republic, she was part of strike forces meant to take down Imperial warlords. She deserted when the republic set her to acting like a riot cop.
We see Cara as a no-nonsense fighter who knows the risks, and attempts to find the best solution. Look at her trying to get the villagers to move away after she learns about the AT-ST. But when spurred, she helps the fight and defend their home. She shows off her mettle, coming up with a plan on the fly and putting herself in danger to lure the AT-ST in.
When she comes back in Episode 7, we see her having fun with combat when it isnā€™t life or death. We also see that her and Mando can relax around each other and josh, as their arm-wrestling bout shows.
2-Episode 4ā€²s ending was to emphasise to us that Mando canā€™t just leave the kid behind, that the baby is unsafe unless with a highly trained killer prepared to go to lengths to protect him.
3-In character building moments, we see Mando break his usual stoic nature to actually explain to first Omera, and then Cara, aspects of his culture. He turns out to be reasonably talkative when youā€™re not a bounty target or someone he distrusts! When Omera asked how long since heā€™d taken his helmet off in front of others, just the age he was wouldā€™ve been enough, but he adds more information about joining the Mandalorian clan unasked. Also, at the beginning of the episode, he makes a point to talk to the baby when itā€™s clearly demanding attention.
Episode 5: You know, initially I was going to say ā€œuuuuhhā€¦ IDKā€
1-MANDO CANā€™T FIND WORK. Heā€™s cut himself off from the only source of income that heā€™s familiar with. He has to take whatā€™s offered, even if he knows itā€™s a bad idea.
2-Mando doesnā€™t have any way of keeping the baby safe when heā€™s working other than to lock him on the ship and hope for the best. He got really lucky with Pellli.
3-This episode reinforces again that the baby will be constantly hunted right from the opening scene.
4- Weā€™re not done with Fennec Shand, I suspect. Or the person who found her body. Was it Moff Gideon? Maybe, though why would he have gone to find her himself?
5-This episode shows us what we mightā€™ve forgotten from the opening of Episode 1: That Mando is actually a really competent Bounty Hunter overall. He has lots of tricks up his sleeve. Those flares were a chekovā€™s gun used within the same episode. Wonder if weā€™ll see them again.
Episode 6: Which buttons to press to piss off Mando.
1-Mando is really good at keeping his cool around people who are absolute motherfuckers to him.
2-Harass him, insult him, he doesnā€™t give a damn unless you actually try and start shit. He will end that. Donā€™t touch his things, donā€™t touch his kid.
3-Again this episode brings up that Mando is having to do work that he really doesnā€™t want to because he has few other options.
4-We see just how violent Mando gets on droids when he has the chance, but we also see how coldly calculating he is about them. To rope a droid, take itā€™s arm and use it to escape a cell like that? Damn impressive.
5-I canā€™t believe he didnā€™t kill those three who were on the prison ship with him. Theyā€™re out there, still alive. Just waiting to be brought back into the show.
6-We see that Mando knows how to turn the odds to his favor very quickly. We also see that he can go full on horror movie monster when he wants. Heā€™s proving to be one hell of a Determinator.
7-Babyā€™s learning from the best! The fact that the little goblin can play hide and seek like that could easily come up! Honestly, that kid seems to understand more than youā€™d think.
SO! This brings us to episode SEVEN: What have we seen within the episode that calls back to the rest of the season? What predictions can we make based off what has happened, and the general style of the show?
Well, A couple very important things weā€™ve seen, some of which reinforces things brought up in previous episodes:
1-This episode makes it very clear that Mando KNOWS Greefā€™s offer is a trap, but he also knows that heā€™s running out of options. All those moments of him and baby being hunted down, all that effort to find work? Thatā€™s flashing through his brain as he considers this red-flag laden offer.
2-Baby can float? Wall-climb? He was hanging upside down from the ceiling SOMEHOW. Letā€™s add this on to his hiding abilities.
3-Baby can force choke a bitch.
4-Baby can heal a fatal injury.
5-Greef Karga, like Mando, cannot bring himself to betray a being that has saved his life. Lovely cinematic parallel there.
5-IG-11 is on Mandoā€™s ship. According the Kuiil, the droid wonā€™t attack people anymore, but it will defend. This droid has all the tools to lay some serious hate if sufficiently motivated though.
6-We see Mando relaxing and playing with Cara during the arm wrestling. Heā€™s playfully competitive with her and joshes with her. Again, a good character moment.
7-Another character moment we see: Mandoā€™s panic when he doesnā€™t know if the kid and Kuiil are safe. The stoic, self-contained man who doesnā€™t panic no matter how bad the odds is reduced to screaming into his comm, desperate for answers.
8-Kuiil introduces himself by name, and Mando uses it. Itā€™s a small moment, but I suspect itā€™s light foreshadowing.
9- it is not for nothing that this episode opens straight up with a flashback to Episode 6. ā€œYou were hired to do a job. So do it. Isnā€™t that your code? Arnā€™t you a man of honor?ā€
ALRIGHT SO. SEASON FINALE PREDICTIONS. After I watch the finale I am going to see if any of these were right and I will be delighted if even a single one is accurate.
1-First and foremost, I think we WILL see the plot wrap up. Maybe not entirely, but by the end of Episode 8, we should see Mando and Baby reunited, and have a more-or-less happy ending to season 1. Itā€™s fucking Disney, after all.
2- The fact that it was VERY SPECIFICALLY SHOWN that baby can heal fatal injuries in episode seven? Chekovā€™s gun, thank you, Kuiil is NOT DEAD. Yes, that scene narratively fits in because itā€™s what was needed for Greef to join the protagonistā€™s team, but I will feel cheated if we donā€™t see baby do more Force healing. If Kuiil is actually dead, someone else will be getting healed.
3-Mandoā€™s helmet and how important it is that it isnā€™t removed comes up CONSTANTLY in season 1. I rather hope we donā€™t see it come off in the season finale, it is possible, but I do hope that they wait until at least season 2 before going there. Thereā€™s something else Iā€™d like officialy revealed first.
4-And that thing I think should be revealed is Mandoā€™s name. Itā€™s something that he has yet to give out, accepting his culture as a title. Same as how Kuill corrected him in episode 7 when Mando called him Uganaught, it would be wonderful if some friend of our hero called him Mando again, and he simply said to them ā€œI have a name. It is Dyn.ā€
Not only would that be a moment of reinforcement of how relaxed and friendly he can be around his allies, but I feel like itā€™s be satisfying from a narrative perspective.
5-In the trailers for the Mandalorian, there are only a few scenes or dialogue now that we have yet to see in the show:
Ā  Ā  Ā -A-Mando comin out of a door and shooting a stormtrooper with Greef right behind him.
Ā  Ā  Ā -B- Kuiil patting Mandoā€™s shoulder while theyā€™re in the cockpit of the Razorcrest (MORE PROOF THAT I AM RIGHT THAT HEā€™LL COME BACK. HELL YEA-Gonna be heartbroken if that was a deleted scene from ep 7) ((EDIT: Nope, thatā€™s a scene from Ep 2. Damnit.))
Ā  Ā  Ā  -C- ā€œMandalorianā€¦ Look outsideā€¦ they are waiting for you.ā€ Aight so, Werner Herzogā€™s character seems to be deadā€¦ but he might not be! Maybe weā€™ll get some exposition from a dieing Imperial with nothing left to lose. Of course, it could be from a scene that they had planned out before deciding to kill off his character.
Ā  Ā  -D- Cara Dune being a badass and shooting with her big gun.- I mean yeah, to be expected.
Ā  Ā  -E- Mando clinging to a flying TIE fighter with his rappeling line and pulling himself up on to it. We see Moff Gideon look up to see a likely very pissed off Mando on the roof.
Ā  -F- Stormtroopers moving in on the Mandalorian Armourer.
Tumblr media
(I actually gasped out ā€œOH NOā€ at seeing this in the trailer. I honestly wouldā€™ve thought the Mandalorians wouldā€™ve relocated ASAP. Ā ))
Ā  Ā -G- This guy:
Tumblr media
SO!
6-Weā€™re definitely going to see the Mandalorian enclave again. My thoughts were that it was empty, but still hard to find, and Mando and friends were going to head there to have a few minutes to plan. They still might do that, but itā€™s not going to be an empty hallway like I wouldā€™ve thought.
7-I really hope that that brief cut of Stormtroopers moving in on the Mandalorian Armourer is not indicative of the clan being wiped out. Everyone go in being braced for it. I am going to be optimistic and say that Episode 3ā€²s ending of the clan coming to our Protagā€™s rescue and being an absolute unstoppable force means that theyā€™re going to help clear out the imperials, though there will be losses. Season 2ā€²s overreaching plot will be helping the Enclave find a new place to settle down.
8-This does hint that Baby will meet the Clan. Will they continue to support Dyn, or will he be blamed from bringing this hellfire down on them?
9-IG-11 is going to come rain down HELL on those who took down Kuiil. He will likely pick up both Kuiil and the communicator and be an important link to Mando and crew remotely. Will he pilot the ship to pick up Mando and gang? Very likely yes.
10-Baby is gonna Force Choke a bitch. Hopefully Moff Gideon. I donā€™t expect babyā€™s efforts to be fatal, however.
11-Paz Vizla is going to be back in style. Is it too much to hope that, at some point, likely not Ep 8, him and Cara get into a ā€œwhose gun is biggerā€ match?
12- Babyā€™s going to be more than his imperial handlers know how to deal with.
Thatā€™s it for now. Iā€™m sure at some point Iā€™ll edit or reblog this with ā€œAND ANOTHER THING.ā€

go go squid! eps 1-30 - thoughts
iā€™ve actually read the novel for this a few years ago as a teen and it was just alright in my estimation, it was cute overall and a fun read but i largely forgot about it in the past few years. checked out the drama out of curiosity as to how theyā€™d adapt it. have watched up to ep 30 at this point and iā€™d say iā€™m rather ambivalent (though iā€™m still pretty engaged) so hereā€™s some rambling about my thoughts about my watch so far.
Ngl, the first 7 eps were unbearable to watch imo. I have a super low tolerance for secondhand embarrassment when watching movies and dramas (which is why i canā€™t get behind some high school movies/dramas) and it was uttermost torture watching tongnian stalk her way (very incompetently too, i must add) to k&kā€™s resting quarters, even getting his identity wrong (despite being fully capable of baidu searching him given that she knew his full name + found out he was part of a famous team), intending to go to watch him the next day but not even thinking about buying tickets till she was actually at the event venue and then being all righteous about not buying tickets from scalpers... Worrying about causing a misunderstanding among gunā€™s trainees yet continually getting near him and hence causing a misunderstanding anyway... Though i knew that it was part of her character setup (high iq genius but nil experience in love?) but i couldnā€™t bear to watch all this unfold haha. Coupled with the very draggy endless flashback scenes and all the testosterone-pumped angst about solo (and now 30 eps in iā€™m very into Li Xianā€™s turn as han shangyan but my eyebrows were hurting watching him furrow his brow 24/7) i was almost prepared to quit but was told that everything would get better around ep 8.
Tumblr media
And lo and behold... it did. As predicted, around ep 8/9 a switch flipped and i began to be more engaged and enjoy the drama more. I was trying to pinpoint what exactly changed my opinion and i think above all, it was the character of han shangyan that really captivated/held my interest. I started seeingĀ gun not just as the typical éœøé“ę€»č£ trope thatā€™s just meant to be confident and commanding and therefore hot but more as a very complex and well fleshed out human (more so than the novel i think, but i canā€™t really remember at this point as itā€™s been years, and anyway the novel is a pretty short book while this drama is considered quite long for a modern fluffy cdrama thus allowing more room for exploration).
I really appreciated seeing all the dualities to his character, e.g. his god-like status in his industry and being the idol of thousands and thousands of youth yet seeing how this celebrity status does not translate to being estimated highly by the people around him, and how it does feed into his ideas and perception of himself to a certain extent, though he is also adamant on doing what he deems right, not caring what people think. How he as a leader of k&k appears unflappable, in control, and is determined, eyes fixed on the prize; yet his softness and care for his boys and the elderly he employs and his past teammates shine through in quiet moments and little actions. He has lofty dreams and big goals and aspirations for the future of his team, yet he is also a man bogged down by tons of emotional baggage, stuck in ruts of nostalgia and guilt and unprocessed anger about the past and unable to let go of past enmities or relations. Even his small little quirks amuse/intrigue me, like his sucking on sweets whenever heā€™s bothered, like his weird obsession with that one Beyond song and playing it whenever heā€™s Brooding about his past (though itā€™s probably just the dramaā€™s way of shilling Netease Music lol)
Tumblr media
Reading Han Shangyanā€™s personality/character arc as such, I found myself very invested in what was happening to him/what he was doing/his interactions with the other characters in the story. Even the flashback scenes and SP team scenes that I found very droll initially and still do to a certain extent now held more of my interest as a gateway to understand HSY more. Heā€™s definitely not a perfect character and is deeply flawed, but I appreciated that they portrayed him in such a manner as he definitely felt more real. (though when it came to how this comes into play with regards to his r/ship with Tong Nian, I had rather mixed feelings about it, which Iā€™ll elaborate on further below)
Tumblr media
Similarly, I also enjoyed the fleshing out of side characters like Mi Shaofei, Solo, Su Cheng, Xiao Ai etc. Mi Shaofeiā€™s arc especially was very moving and wistful to me, seeing him have his dream of being a champion rekindled at the start of the drama and going back to be a competitive CTF athlete, yet having his age and his lack of practice cause him to not be in top form and doing badly, and eventually making the decision to retire. Seeing him express regret having quit together with Han Shangyan back in the day in a pique of anger and not having this arc resolve in a neat, fulfilling way - I really appreciated it and thought it illuminated quite a sobering reality that timing and circumstances may not always yield the best outcome, that actions from the past that you thought were the right thing to do may come back to haunt you, that you may regret your past actions, that you may have to close the door on certain things even if you really want it. And I really like Mi Shaofeiā€™s personality as well, seeing how he has a good read on his friendsā€™ temperaments and personalities and knows how to diffuse tense situations (especially when Han Shangyan is being prickly and abrasive), how he values the collective above himself, like being happy that SP team scores improved greatly even when the improvement came about due to his retirement. Iā€™m glad that he now has a new path which he can work towards his original dream of being a champion, albeit in a different way that he had initially envisioned.
The main thing niggling at me/making me feel conflicted as I watch the drama is actually Tong Nianā€™s character/Tong Nian and HSYā€™s relationship. I donā€™t really know how to explain what exactly bothers me so much about this, but hereā€™s a shoddy attempt:
Tumblr media
In comparison to how well fleshed out Han Shang Yanā€™s character arc is, Tong Nianā€™s arc sadly feels very underwhelming in comparison, and I wish similar character development was afforded to her character. 30 episodes in, I literally know nothing about her inner thoughts, motivations, character etc that is not Gun-related gushing. And this is all the more a pity given that her characterā€™s setup was so cool - being so smart and intelligent, being so advanced in a STEM field, also having such a successful online career out of her singing hobby - all these hint at such an interesting female lead, but ultimately feels like an empty shell of a person. There really is no scene where she exists independently, separate from Gun or Gun-related thoughts pervading her mind - e.g. even when she is pitching some cool project idea showcasing her computing skills to the police department, sheā€™s hung up on Gun after breaking up with him; when sheā€™s invigilating a class sheā€™s still thinking about him; sheā€™s coding some new game for him; sheā€™s doing some debugging... but thatā€™s because sheā€™s devastated after he behaved in a shit way towards her; sheā€™s at some tryouts to be the singer for the ctf theme song! sheā€™s showcasing her singing! but somehow... the show still managed to make it all about how sheā€™s heartbroken over him; she uploaded a new song! ... but itā€™s about how sheā€™s in love with him...
The show tells me she has a life outside of her crush on Gun, but it doesnā€™t show it as such. Though I also understand that this is due to the drama being centered on esports and hence involving HSY more, and Tong Nian is an outsider to the esports scene and thus her own activities would not be featured as much. It is possible that should they have chosen to feature more about Tong Nian, it might have affected the cohesiveness and pacing and how tight the plot is. But but but... she is the female lead, after all?? I literally know more about Mi Shaofei than about Tong Nian, and he is a supporting character! And precisely because the show did such a good job of fleshing out HSY, whose job and aspiration and passion and friendship-related angst etc lend a lot of fodder to shape his character and that is totally unrelated to his romance with Tong Nian, Tong Nianā€™s character development seems really lacking in gravitas in comparison.
Tumblr media
This sense of imbalance spills over to my perception of them as a couple. I definitely am not opposed to or feel squicked out by huge age gaps in principle, as long as there isnā€™t some power imbalance and no teenagers are involved. But something about the combination of Tong Nian being all about Han Shangyan (at least thatā€™s how the drama portrayed it, even if it was unintentional) while Tong Nian is only one part of Han Shangyanā€™s life + Tong Nianā€™s almost worshipful sentiments towards Han Shangyan + the showā€™s tendency to highlight how much sleep or time she sacrifices to do stuff for him, on top of the huge age gap made me slightly uncomfortable...?
I think I felt it especially during the plot arc of the second break up. The events of this arc were standard asian drama angst fare - interference from well meaning but biased parent leading to melodramatic wallowing in angst and mean behaviour attempting to drive the other party away... If purely viewing this arc from the lens of character exploration, I think the (rather ridiculous) events in that arc like HSY promising Tong Nianā€™s mother to not bother Tong Nian anymore and all his subsequent shitty behaviour towards Tong Nian shed some light on HSYā€™s inner self abasement and č‡Ŗå‘ę„Ÿ and was fascinating in that regard. But then seeing how Tong Nian who definitely puts him on a pedestal just internalised all of that horrible behaviour and accepted it and even kept on excusing his actions or asking him if she had done something wrong or if he was mad at her about the cat (though i also was mad that she just got a pet as a gift without asking beforehand lolol) or if he wanted her to do anything... that was SO painful to watch. (Until he implied that he cheated on her, thankfully she drew a line at that!!) I felt like it was bordering on cold violence to some extent? Not that any part of the second break up was Tong Nianā€™s fault, but just the way the show portrayed Gunā€™s way of pushing Tong Nian away and Tong Nianā€™s subsequent response made it harder to just dismiss the entire saga as just pure asian drama typical noble idiocy angst and left a really bad taste in my mouth. And above all what made me quite exasperated was how in the end, HSY didnā€™t even apologise to Tong Nian about it, and even attempted (and was successful) to get back into her good graces by listing all the reasons why he should be pitied and hence activating Tong Nianā€™sĀ ā€˜Han Shangyan is so pitiful and I love him and want to give him everythingā€™ mode, and being so smug about it??
(I feel like I come off as being rather inconsistent here lolol, earlier gushing about how much I love HSYā€™s character and now ranting about him. I think I just feel very confused about what to feel when watching the drama, and partially I think itā€™s because the entire romantic plot and all the events of the drama... require some suspension of belief and are not really very cohesive or well plotted, in the sense that it doesnā€™t seem to flow organically together with the charactersā€™ emotions and responses? i.e. the characterā€™s emotions/motivations/thoughts donā€™t correspond to their subsequent actions and the other charactersā€™ subsequent responses to said action doesnā€™t seem proportional at times. So at certain plot points like how HSY got back together with Tong Nian so easily Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™m supposed to feel outraged or just take it in my stride?? Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™m making sense)
Tumblr media
Oh, another thing that bothered me was this weird machoism (?? not sure how to explain it) that I sensed at some parts. An example off the top of my mind would be the entire sequence of HSY and Mi Shaofei going out together after Mi Shaofei announced his retirement, with Tong Nian and Yaya trailing at their heels. Once again, from a character development angle, I enjoyed the dialogues between MSF and HSY, between MSF and Yaya. But seeing MSF and HSY pass their coats to Yaya and Tong Nian then embarking on some bromantic tension-filled run together, while Yaya and Tong Nian are left hovering around waiting for them to return and holding their coats; or seeing MSF and HSY give each other Meaningful Looks and then downing a whole bowl of alcohol in some testosterone-fuelled display of Manly Sorrow and Solidarity as Tong Nian and Yaya watch from the sides, worried... Then having Tong Nian and Yaya each attempting to comfort their respective men... idk, i think coupled with the fact that the show is centred around esports, and most of the esports characters are male, and a larger proportion the main female characters we see are not directly involved and are more on the sidelines, it just gives off the sense of like, the men in this drama having their struggles, their aspirations, their sorrows be forefront and central in the plot, while the women are just there to fawn over them and support from the sidelines and tend to the guysā€™ emotional needs and baby them when they are being grown children. Iā€™m definitely not explaining this well enough and Iā€™m not sure if my impression is valid or Iā€™m just being a hater or being subconsciously misogynistic and projecting or something lol. Iā€™d love to hear what anyone thinks heh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thankfully, that part of the plot is over and now the romance part of the drama seems to be settled and the drama Iā€™m assuming is gearing up towards winning the championships. This is promising haha because personally feel like the esports plotline is more captivating than the romance. I sense that now that Tong Nian/Gun are a properly established relationship and both are fully on board the dynamic might change a bit so I shall see how I feel about their relationship in the last quarter of the drama!
With regards to the cast, there was all round quite solid acting imo. I thought Li Xian seemed to be overdoing it with the frowning and grouchiness initially but I think it was alright after a few eps. His microexpressions and meaning-loaded gazes and quirked-lip-smiles are pretty affecting. I watched some interviews of him and he seems really different from Gun in real life so thatā€™s quite impressive. Plus I love his slight slouchiness when portraying Gun in the more personal scenes where the facade of gruff boss!han shangyan disappears lolol. For all my problems with the way Tong Nianā€™s character was portrayed, Yang Zi does a great job in her role too. I think her crying scenes have always been on point and it was no different here. Special shoutout to the actors for Mi Shaofei, Solo and Xiao Ai, who portrayed their roles really well I think!
Lastly on a random note, Iā€™m quite amused by how the soundtrack copiously borrows from the Suddenly This Summer soundtrack, but Iā€™m not complaining because the OST is pretty evocative and whimsical and makes me hugely nostalgic for STS :)

Overall the fandom enjoyed the episode, with the vast majority of votes being at either a 4 or 5.
Best ep of the season thus far, Bert's monologue/transformation was amazing. Some fantastic VA work by Tomohisa and Inoue as well. CG CT also looked far better than I thought he would. These next few episodes are going to kill me. I can't wait.
Fantastic episode. Bertholdt's monologue was the best part.
Great episode, very dramatic, awesome OST. I am not looking forward to the next few eps, except for Floch's villain origin story!
Canā€™t wait for the next episode, this one was so good!
Editing was a bit choppy, voice lines cut half a second too quick a few times.
First ep of S3P2 to get a 10/10 from me <3
The animation was pretty lacking in this episode. R&Bā€™s running animation on the wall felt pretty lazy, there was that reused shot of the beast Titanā€™s throw from season 2, Bertholdtā€™s character design felt inconsistent as well as Zekeā€™s. They really need to get the old team back on the animation cause the current team clearly doesnā€™t know how to handle aot. Itā€™s getting on my nerves.
The episode was absolutely awesome.

The Bertl Bombā„¢ was the scene that respondents were most excited about. Following behind that was Mikasaā€™s brief skirmish with Bertolt, and closely behind that was Armin and Bertoltā€™s shouting match on the rooftops.
BERUTORUTO=GOD
Iā€™m mikasasexual
As a huge Bertholdt fan, it was so great to see Bert as the centre of attention for once. It makes me really sad knowing what comes next.
Bert bomb made my bomb go off
I love Bertholdt's resolve. This scene made him one of my favorite characters.
Bertholdt vs. Mikasa was so fire šŸ”„
One of the best episodes without a doubt. Bertholdt's monologue before transforming was even more impactful than in the manga.
Explosion aftermath was disappointing. I expected a sea of fire. The one they gave us doesn't feel like something big just happened
That "Levi's 5 seconds of screen time" was good, too!
Why isn't "Mikasa comforting and protecting Armin" an option for favorite moment in this episode? Because those were definitely my favorite moments in the episode
The partner gesture between Reiner and Bertl is the death of me
Am I the only one who get's goosebumps Ā in the scene before he transformed himself into the colossalus titan and said: 'I feel like, no matter how this all plays out, I can accept whatever happens. That's right, nobody's in the wrong. There's nothing we could do. Because this world....is just...that cruel.' This scene was impressive back in the manga and I'm proud how good Tomohisa Hashizume nailed it. He's an amazing voice actor, especially for Bertholdt.

Overall the fandom was excited about the new versions of familiar songs with 71% of respondents feeling that they were ā€œtotally epic!ā€ 18% agree that the rearranges were good, but that they canā€™t surpass the original versions.
The soundtrack was lit.
Music was awesome!
Ngl I've watched the episode many times bc the OST during some scenes is just SO GOOD!!
WHO WON THE SHOUTING MATCH? 308 Responses
Tumblr media
Over Ā¾ of the fandom agree that Bertolt dominated the shouting match on the rooftop.
I feel Armin won the "debate" because Bertolt, in his zeal to convince himself that he wanted to kill people he used to see as friends, wasn't making any sense
HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT BERTOLTā€™S DEVELOPMENT AT THIS POINT? 308 Responses
Tumblr media
46% of respondents were happy to see how far Bertolt had come as a character at this point in the story, while 34% were just happy to get more dialogue and thoughts from him. A small percentage had been curious where his character would go from here.
Godtolt on the way
He ditched the alter ego built up out of guilt, and it's cool to see him truly one of the strongest characters fighting off Mikasa while in human form
I wish we had more Bertl development! He couldā€™ve been really complex, but just isnā€™t due to a lack of screentime. Compared to someone like Reiner or Annie, this was his one moment of pure raw character development
He reveals his true warrior colors
I loved it, one of my favourite chapters because of his resolve and how he himself was surprised about it.
He's only moving forward as a character and does what needs to be done. Bertholdt, your doing amazing sweetie!
With all this development just to kill him off was heart breaking.
Honestly, Iā€™m so proud of him. He was amazing and itā€™s so nice to see a confident Bert. I donā€™t think itā€™s a development worth praising in terms of moral standards but it suited and made sense for his character
I feel like this is where his character peaked. It was pretty flat before season 2
I just donā€™t like bertolt in generalI really like his development but it's a shame that he severely lacked screen time before this episode
I'm not really a fan of Bertolt so I'm neutral on this
I still hate his traitorous guts and can't wait for THAT scene to be animated
Fucking loved it. It's one of my favorite chapters (and now episodes) just because he's talking so much and he's badass af. My boy is finally shining!
HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT ARMIN BLUFFING ABOUT ANNIE A SECOND TIME? 306 Responses
Tumblr media
Just over half of respondents feel that Armin should have tried a different tactic with Bertolt, while 46% felt that it was worth another shot to try and manipulate Bertoltā€™s feelings for Annie again.
Has Armin ever convinced anyone of anything they didn't already believe?
He was so used to Bertholdtā€™s behavior and there was nothing that wouldā€™ve made Armin think Bertholdt would have the reaction that he did
Lame. He didn't use much of intelligence here.
It's low, I'm happy it didn't work again
He learned some pretty vital things - how far the Warriors are willing to go, what their priorities are, what Bert's state of mind is, and where his loyalties truly lie. I don't imagine Armin went down that track solely because he thought it would have the exact same effect, but rather to 'check something' - exactly the same as Bertolt.
I think it not only was a good attempt to take (it worked before, why not try it again), but I also think it is incredibly important to show Armin's flaws. Yes, he's an amazing strategist. He's also still sixteen and not always entirely confident. Having Armin make mistakes like relying on old ploys that worked keeps his character more grounded and realistic
Smart people tend to use the same tactics over and over again as long as they're successful and for good reason. After all, why wouldn't you use the same tactic if you know it brings success? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It's only when said strategy or tactic doesn't work where the individual would entertain the prospect of changing it or never using it again.
Thatā€™s Very Unfortunate!
WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT CGI COLOSSAL TITAN? 306 Responses
Tumblr media
36% of respondents arenā€™t very impressed with the CGI colossal titan, while 29% actually found the effect to be pretty awesome! 13% feel itā€™s disturbing and a small 7% just find it cringeworthy.
Alright
CGI doesn't bother me. What bothers me is how animators overly rely on it. Several decades ago animators made great masterpieces without cgi, all by hand. I understand using it because it makes things easier, but exceeding quality should still be top priority. If you can't make it better with CGI, then go old school and do it right.
Decent but could be better
U can still notice it is CGI but I think their CGI has gotten better compared to some of their earlier uses of it
Doesn't fit with the art style, which is as bad as unfair splitting potatoes
Not too bad but could definitely have been better. Understandable since there has only been one full body shot of it before and that was a sharp backwards, down looking angle.
Donā€™t really care much for cgi complaints, animating that would be a lot of work, their efforts are better elsewhere
It was necessary and didn't look appallingly bad.
I don't get why people hate it so much? I think it's fine
I hated it in season 2 and I hate it more now
Bad
Don't like CGI anything in any anime so take from that what you will
Most angles he looks fine! The only part that he looked off was when we got the face shot of him panning out to the rest of his body
Thought it looked solid. There were some really great shots of him this ep imo. Hopefully the action bits will look as good, and they mix in some 2D shots as well.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE 104TH RIDING ON TITAN EREN? 306 Responses
Tumblr media
Over half of the fandom agree that this detail is something thatā€™s very adorable, while 22% feel itā€™s just pretty neat. A combined 21% of respondents either feel itā€™s not that big of a deal or simply donā€™t care about it.
>AMJCS who cares?
Good boy protecting his friends? Hell Yeah!
I want to ride pieck - Not an innuendo, i just want a go in one of her turrets
It's gay
Lads you would never get me off that thing, I'd be saddling him up to go grocery shopping
Save me a seat guys!!
HOW WELL DID THE EPISODE ADAPT THE CORRESPONDING CHAPTERS? 306 Responses
Tumblr media
Manga readers are overall happy with the adaptation of chapters 77 and 78, with over 90% saying that it was close to being perfectly done.
DID MARCOā€™S DEATH AFFECT YOU AS MUCH AS IT DID IN THE MANGA? 305 Responses
Tumblr media
41% of respondents felt more heartbroken to see Marcoā€™s death play out in the anime, while 31% say they felt more sympathetic toward Marco. 14% werenā€™t affected when this scene played out in either story-telling medium.
About the same level, still utterly heartbreaking, though
DEATH TO THE TITAN TRIO!
Didn't feel as much. Not because it was a bad adaptation, but just because I've already read it and knew what went down.
I felt more sorry for RBA than Marco in this version
I still had lot of emotions with the adaptation, but there's no compare to experiencing it for the first time
I was absolutely sobbing when I read it in the manga. Anime-wise I was more prepared to handle the scene
Watching Marco die again reminds me of why, even in current manga, I still completely and utterly LOATHE/DESPISE/HATE RBA. No, I don't care about their "tragic backstory", they don't deserve empathy of any kind.
It had the same impact when I first watched the trailer for the Lost Girls OVA, which spoiled me his death
It was tough to watch, but it was necessary to deepen Reiner, Bertolt, Annie (and Marco)'s characters. It was very well done, dramatically
Oh fuck it was WAY WORSE animated. Actually hearing his cries and screams is something that can never be duplicated in written form
I did not anticipate being as affected as I was by the Marco flashback. That doesnā€™t give me hope for how Iā€™m going to handle the rest of the RtS arc. The emotions of the characters are being portrayed very well this season.
NOW THAT WEā€™VE HAD A CHANCE TO LISTEN TO ZEKE HAVE MORE DIALOGUE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HIS VOICE? 305 Responses
Tumblr media
The majority of the fandom believe that Zekeā€™s seiyuu is a good fit for his character, although over half of the fandom had expected his voice to sound a bit different. 10% feel it wasnā€™t the best choice, while a small sliver of respondents donā€™t care for the voice at all.
I can't unhear DIO. Thanks Zeke, thanks Koyasu.
Zeke's VA also voices a lovely, kind character in Violet Evergarden, so his lines are making me really, really uncomfortable
WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT PIECKā€™S TITAN VOICE? 307 Responses
Tumblr media
30% of respondents are excited about Pieckā€™s titan voice, while 28% feel itā€™s not what they expected to hear. 18% find the voice ā€œacceptableā€ while 17% want to wait and hear more before making a final verdict.
Pieck's voice was unexpected in that it was terrifying, much like Ymir's Titan voice
Holy shit. I'm gonna hear it in my nightmares
I rabu Piku.
REGARDING CURRENT MANGA EVENTS, DO YOU THINK REINER STILL WANTS TO STAY TRUE TO HIS PROMISE TO YMIR? 308 Responses
Tumblr media
Nearly half of the fandom believe that Reiner would still like to honor his promise to Ymir, but feel that he will never actually get to pull through. 15% believe that heā€™s still determined to save Historia no matter what, and 18% believe that heā€™s actually stopped caring about his promise (or perhaps just Historia in general) altogether.
Good question. I really want to have a scene with him facing Historia, his reaction to her pregnancy should be interesting
He doesn't want to save HISTORIA because he doesn't know her. The one he wanted to save was KRISTA. But she is already "dead"
I think Reiner has done what he needed to
I'm not sure, I think his main concerns are the kids and stopping Eren
It has to be real low on his priority list right about now given the circumstances
Of course not, Reiner only cares about his own manpain
He still calls her Krista and she probably has already chosen a side most likely Yeagerist
ARMIN HAD WISHED FOR A CHANCE TO NEGOTIATE AT THIS POINT, SIMILAR TO CURRENT MANGA EVENTS. IS THIS PROOF THAT HE HASNā€™T BEEN CHANGED BY BERTOLTā€™S MEMORIES? 308 Responses
Tumblr media
44% donā€™t want to say either way whether Arminā€™s pre-titan behavior is indicative of the influence that Bertolt may or may not have over the Armin we know in the current manga. 39% believe that this is proof Erenā€™s words to Armin were total B.S., and 12% think this isnā€™t really proof of anything.
Armin Has always been the diplomat, while Eren is a man of force. Mikasa is in between. It has always been that way.
Past and future are influenced the same when paths are concerned so there's no way to tell.
I donā€™t think itā€™s enough to prove or disprove but this is an interesting idea
I don't get this 'changed' shit. Of course having access to someone else's memories has its own influence on a person, but that's true of anyone on the planet who's read a memoir as well. Everything has its effect. The titan shifter thing is obviously a bit more invasive than that, but it doesn't mean he's now suddenly possessed by Beartoto's fucking undead spirit.
I'd like to think it is but with everything Isayama's been throwing at us from out of left field who knows
he's always wished for negotiation, but he seems to have changed in his methods for negotiation. armin used to be more abrupt and upfront, whereas now he seems more tentative
No, he wasn't chanced that much. He understands RBA better and has more sympathy for Annie (maybe even has a crush on her) but it has nothing to do with being a slave.
SIMILARLY, MIKASA POINTS OUT HOW BERTOLT FEELS LIKE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON. ARE THE MEMORIES OF HIS PREDECESSOR AFFECTING HIM IN THIS ARC? 306 Responses
Tumblr media
Over half of the fandom feel that Bertoltā€™s current behavior at this point in the series is of his own will, and not influenced by any prior holders of the Colossal Titan. 38% think itā€™s possible heā€™s being influenced by memories of his predecessor(s) at this time, while a small percentage feel that he is definitely being influenced by someone elseā€™s memories.
He was badass but I think he was affected by memories of the previous CT owner.
I think that Mikasa thinks heā€™s acting like a different person because he is. I think this is what Bertholdt is really like but with the 104th he was playing a role so he didnā€™t get too attached to them.
Still wondering if the "he seemed like a different person" comment was a note about development or supposed to foreshadow something about the Titans influencing their hosts.
I think itā€™s original Ymir controlling him through the paths
Probably. It seems like a bit of a drastic change to go from quiet, self-deprecating and remorseful to cold, outspoken, and trying to morally justify his actions. It's just too drastic a change.
Confidence boost is completely irrelevant to paths.
We donā€™t even know Bertā€™s previous predecessors!
Nope, that's have something to do with "character development", people change sometimes after time and grown more indepented and strong of their own shadow.
I always thought of it more as Bertie finally coming down on a side and the pair picking up on that. He was always so meek and indecisive, but now he's been forced to make a choice and to do it he has to shed his old skin and become more ruthless.
Not at all he ditched his guilt that made up the act they knew him for.
WHAT SCENE ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE PREVIEW? 307 Responses
Tumblr media
The overwhelming majority of respondents are looking forward to the Survey Corpsā€™ suicide charge against the Beast Titan and his flying boulders. Nearly 30% are looking forward to the moment that Levi gives Erwin his promise to kill the Beast Titan. A small percentage are most looking forward to Armin and Jean decide whoā€™s going to lead the 104th to victory.
I am not ready for the next two episodes
Iā€™m gonna get my ASS FUCKED SO HARD I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. THERES GONNA BE SHIT EVERYWHERE. ERWINS GONNA FUCKING DIE. LEVIS GONNA BE SAD.
fuck next week's shit is good, hype
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE?
The "predecessor's memory affecting current shifter" is, as far as I'm aware, just a theory that I don't buy into. I've only seen a person "changed" because of the Founding Titan's vow. Otherwise, the shifter's personality remains the same. Armin has always been an advocate for talking and negotiation. We see this in the Trost arc when the Garrison nearly kill Eren with that cannonball. So no, I don't think anyone's memories are "affecting" anyone, including current Eren.
Loved pretty much everything in this episode except for the CGI CT. Didn't expect to see uncensored Reiner, which was weird because Mikasa cutting off Bert's ear was more censored. And I'm a bit disappointed we didn't see more shots of Bert with his V fringe off his forehead. He looked so cool in the manga!
This episode gave me anxiety 'cause I know what we'll going to deal in the next three ones. The soundtrack gave intensity in every scene that its put on it, plus the fantastic job of the VA, perfect work. And just thinking about how the next episodes will be.... *goosebumps*
Wit studio handled the cgi very well imo. It's very difficult to animate this action heavy arca with rubble, smoke, odm scenes etc. and I think they are adapting the manga very well with the right pacing per episode which is also a challenge to fit within 20 minutes.
Bertolt is best boi and this episode was the best of all 3. He deserved to survive and mature up. Hashizume nailed him JUST RIGHT and his interactions with Reiner this episode were on point. The scene where he outsmarted Armin and countered Mikasa was worthy of applause.
i wish it wasnā€™t too rushed some moments arenā€™t as emotional as they should be
mikasa looked so good this episode and i'm so happy with how wit isn't screwing her over
After seeing this episode and Marco's death, it makes me sad that Reiner lost his pal Bertolt. They should be suffer bois together. Even still, some of the animation this episode was reallyy not great, so I rated the episode a 4.
Bertolt has proved on this episode that he's one of the best character of the series
I miss berthold so much and seeing him at his best was awesome but itā€™s really hard knowing whatā€™s going to happen next
This is shaping up to be the best season of Attack On Titan. Cheers for more!
zekeā€™s beard is the tenth titan shifter
