So Dungeons and Daddies Season 2 is really just taking the average coming-of-age story and making it to every horrifying extreme, huh.
It is that moment in which you realize your parents don't know what they're doing any better than you do, and people present it like it's something comforting, but it's just even more terrifying because there really, really is no right answer. It's realizing that no, love isn't enough, sometimes you love your family and it just made everything worse. Everyone who came before you fucked things up even when they were trying to make things better, and unfucking everything just seems impossible, but not even trying is such a depressing option, and one your kids will never be able to forgive you for.
I have many feelings on this.

actually used r*ddit for the first time in a thousand years just to comfort a self proclaimed 'grown ass man' regarding his feelings about feeling lost and grieving over the death of RT.
I usually stay away from commenting on public forums and the like, but he was clearly confused and didn't understand why he was hurting and it was frustrating him. it genuinely makes me so sad that a lot of cis men deeply struggle with allowing themselves to feel sadness if it doesn't directly relate to someone close to them dying.
and so I kind of said as much. told him that just because RT wasn't a real human doesn't mean that the decades of comfort it brought him didn't matter. that the brain doesn't differentiate between the loss of a person vs. the loss of something intangible that was still incredibly important.
told him to give himself the grace to grieve and be sad that something he loved was ending and that he wasn't the only one feeling that way. and surprisingly he replied and said he really needed to hear that, as did a couple of other dudes. which made me glad I said something. it sucks that they feel like they need permission or a reason to feel hurt/grief tho
there's definitely a strangeness to feeling grief over the end of media. but if it impacted your life for the better, then of course you're going to feel sad and lost. especially from folks you've been watching the better part of two decades.

I didn't know "song of the summer" meant an actual popular song that comes out over the summer. I thought it just meant a song you listen to a lot over the summer, so much so that it defines your summer. When asked what the song of the summer is I've been saying shit like "Unicorns by Colour of course!" and "Atlas of an Eye by Hammer No More the Fingers :)" until my Dad asked "Do you actually think people are listening to that?"
Anyways my Song of the Fucking Summer right here:

once again I am gripped by anxiety, a combo of work stress, fear of running into the screaming parkade lady again, and for some reason, feeling like I want to do too many hobbies this weekend and won't have enough time.

Podcast Reviews - A La Wind
So for some reason I have binged through a whole bunch of podcasts lately, probably because at long last I caught up to the present on Morbid and needed something else to occupy my brain. In no particular order: Malevolent, Midst, Out of Place, Red Valley.
Malevolent:
Could be described as "Two people play Amnesia The Dark Descent while the one holding the controller isn't the one who can see the screen, with predictable amounts of resultant screaming." Absolutely incredible production values. . . for a one man show. If you saw my screamalong you already have a good idea how I feel about this one. Where it suffers is the Patreon choose-your-own-adventure aspect dicking the story around and making for inconsistent characterization. On the other hand, if you wanted you could participate and choose to make Arthur suffer, so! Every choice is a pay off to someone even if it's not me.
I think it's perfect fandom bait: it hits that line between compelling story and interesting characters and enough flaws that GOD you want to get your hands in there and tinker and make it better. Three? seasons, and the get along shirt hasn't done its job yet so we've got plenty to go.
Midst:
Fantasy steampunk spaghetti Western??? The best I can do at describing the plot is "Mega evangelical church rolls into town and ruins everything, while excommunicated badass has Regrets, young acolyte realizes he should probably have Regrets, and local conman gets a new dream job."
You really just have to try this one to know if you'll like it, as it just picks up and never stops running. Sort of like three people reading a Terry Pratchett book, with flawless baton passes and asides and emphasis. I really like the style and the story, even if I want to smack multiple people many times. (The narrators tend to make it clear when they want to smack people, too.) Has a character that reminds me of one of my OCs who is near and dear to my heart that then proceeds to be a young idiot because, he's a young idiot. Two full seasons in and god knows how many to go-- definitely one to keep an eye on!
Out of Place:
An archivist keeps cataloging impossible historical items sent to them from what must be parallel worlds. It's definitely got good production value, decent writing, but it's really not as engaging to me because of the monologue format. Falling back on having separate voices all have different accents really felt forced when they show up. Interesting in concept more than execution. Two seasons, and as far as I know that's a wrap.
Red Valley:
Impeccable production values, great snappy writing and acting, with a soundtrack that reminds me of the Moon OST - with similar vibes. Present day sci-fi that's really cleverly done. Average guy just trying to get by being terrible at his job finds out that his actual job that he IS really good at is uh. Complicated. His new best friend is spiritually one of the Lone Gunmen from X-files, and his only guide at what the actual fuck he is involved in. They've laid so many Chekhov's guns that I am bracing for the twenty one gun salute that's just about to hit us. Two seasons, and they're currently crowd-funding the third. I willingly and knowingly gave them money for an asshole character to insult or threaten to kill me and I am delighted.

😊👂 Black Coffee (Hercule Poirot #7.5) (Agatha Christie, playwright; Charles Osborne, adapter/novelization; John Moffat, narrator) - you can definitely tell that the bones of this were a play; still an entertaining listen/read
😍 Differently Okay Local Idiots series (One-EyedBossman (desert000rose), SecretFandomStories) - 137K series, Stucky no powers D/s AU - absolutely LOVED this!!!! both are recovering vets with many jagged edges and they see how they fit together - the narrative structure on this was great: dual POV, very tightly overlapping/interlocking (which could gone badly so easily but I really think these authors pull it off). Can't wait for more.
🥰 Daddy Issues (His Boy Next Door #39) (RJ Moray) - novella - the next chapter in Jack & Channon's story
😊 K'diwa: A Steamy Novel of Interspecies Romance, by Jim Kirk (branwyn) - 103K, Kirk/Spock - tagged 'Jim is a sweet sad bottom and Spock can't stand it' and that's really what you need to know
💖💖 +128K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
It's A Very Distinctive Family Resemblance (copperbadge) - Leverage, MCU: Gen, 1.6K - I love every iteration of 'Eliot Spencer is related to Bucky Barnes'
Put It on Repeat, It Stays the Same (giselleslash) - MCU: Stucky, 20K - reread; love this story of these two pining FWB getting stuck together by a snowstorm and then ~~feelings~~
Rockin' and Rollin' (musette22) - MCU: Stucky, 3K - shout out to Minnie for taking up the challenge and writing some fucking delicious fic inspired by that mechanical bull riding video
fish in the sky (alby_mangroves, chaosmanor) - MCU: Stucky, 37K - http://ao3.org/works/27969167

Listening to a podcast discussing conspiracy theories and deconstructing the ideas behind them and it's reminded me of the coolest practical lessons in critical thinking I ever got, both in high school, both from the same teacher. One was a month long project on who killed jfk in which we could basically present any theory as long as we cited all our reasons and it got us really excited about research and interpretation, but it was the follow up that I liked best.
Our next project she brought us into class and showed us a documentary claiming the moon landing was faked. Gave us worksheets to do that sided with that stance. And at the end of class a bunch of us were like miss wait this doesn't seem right?? and she said okay, we'll discuss that next week. The next lesson, she showed us a mythbusters episode countering all the claims of the original documentary and gave us worksheets for that, and another bunch of people went wait miss you can't teach us two opposing things, which one is right? What do we put on the exam??
So she split the class in two and told us each to present a case based on each side, and to explain why our source was or wasn't the more reliable of the two. Got us to debate each other directly and use additional sources to back us up and explain why those sources were reliable and should be believed. And because they were randomly assigned there was no guarantee you'd agree with the stance you were presenting, but you had to present it like you did. At the end of the project she asked us all which stance we found more convincing and why, and the majority of us basically said "we think that the moon landing is real because most of the arguments against it seem like someone reacted to a confusing thing without testing it, but when you test it and ask the person running the test to explain the science it makes sense once you have more information. Also, one documentary was made with the help of scientists with qualifications and experience and the other was made by people who don't have that but like to write mystery books, which looks like a less reliable way to get an answer. But we still dont understand why you showed us both if one is wrong."
And she was like excellent. You've done exactly what you should do. At high school level, we as teachers are expected to filter for the reliable sources for you, so you know to repeat that to pass an exam, but if you want to be historians on your own, I won't be your teacher any more once you graduate. Lots of people have opinions and theories and research about times in history, and it's your job to learn how to look at them and decide who you want to trust. This won't be on the exam, but I need you all to know it. You all did a great job following the school's instructions to repeat information you were given, but for some of you, that information wasn't on a reliable foundation. I know you all know how to pass an exam. You're smart and you've been trained to follow these instructions. What you deserve to be taught is how to use all this once you don't have to do exams any more.
And then as a reward for us doing a good job at figuring out the value of checking your sources' sources she let us watch Bush get hit in the face with a shoe before we had to go to maths. Shoutout to you Ms Hannah you were a good'un I hope you're doing well ten years on from that class

Hi- er, this is my first-ever writer's strike, how does one not cross a picket line in this context? I know how not to do it with things like Amazon and IRL strikes, but how does it apply to media/streaming?
Hi, this is a great question, because it allows me to write about the difference between honoring a picket line and a boycott. (This is reminding me of the labor history podcast project that's lain fallow in my drafts folder for some time now...) In its simplest formulation, the difference between a picket line and a boycott is that a picket line targets an employer at the point of production (which involves us as workers), whereas a boycott targets an employer at the point of consumption (which involves us as consumers).
So in the case of the WGA strike, this means that at any company that is being struck by the WGA - I've seen Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Brothers Discovery, NBC, Paramount, and Sony mentioned, but there may be more (check the WGA website and social media for a comprehensive list) - you do not cross a picket line, whether physical or virtual. This means you do not take a meeting with them, even if its a pre-existing project, you do not take phone calls or texts or emails or Slacks from their executives, you do not pitch them on a spec script you've written, and most of all you do not answer any job application.
Because if this strike is like any strike since the dawn of time, you will see the employers put out ads for short-term contracts that will be very lucrative, generally above union scale - because what they're paying for in addition to your labor is you breaking the picket line and damaging the strike - to anyone willing to scab against their fellow workers. GIven that one of the main issues of the WGA are the proliferation of short-term "mini rooms" whereby employers are hiring teams of writers to work overtime for a very short period, to the point where they can only really do the basics (a series outline, some "broken stories," and some scripts) and then have the showrunner redo everything on their lonesome, while not paying writers long-term pay and benefits, I would imagine we're going to see a lot of scab contracts being offered for these mini rooms.
But for most of us, unless we're actively working as writers in Hollywood, most of that isn't going to be particularly relevant to our day-to-day working lives. If you're not a professional or aspiring Hollywood writer, the important thing to remember honoring the picket line doesn't mean the same thing as a boycott. WGA West hasn't called on anyone to stop going to the movies or watching tv/streaming or to cancel their streaming subscriptions or anything like that. If and when that happens, WGA will go to some lengths to publicize that ask - and you should absolutely honor it if you can - so there will be little in the way of ambiguity as to what's going on.
That being said, one of the things that has happened in the past in other strikes is that well-intentioned people get it into their heads to essentially declare wildcat (i.e, unofficial and unsanctioned) boycotts. This kind of stuff comes from a good place, someone wanting to do more to support the cause and wanting to avoid morally contaminating themselves by associating with a struck company, but it can have negative effects on the workers and their unions. Wildcat boycotts can harm workers by reducing back-end pay and benefits they get from shows if that stuff is tied to the show's performance, and wildcat boycotts can hurt unions by damaging negotiations with employers that may or may not be going on.
The important thing to remember with all of this is that the strike is about them, not us. Part of being a good ally is remembering to let the workers' voices be heard first and prioritizing being a good listener and following their lead, rather than prioritizing our feelings.
