Blog 1
Leadership: leadership is an art of motivating people in such a way that they start doing things to achieve the objectives of the company. Directing people in a business to meet the needs of a company.
Leadership Situation: It was the time of Christmas and at our workplace we have organized a party in which I was supposed to manage everything which includes managing people, booking a place, foods, games, and parties. I was the leader and I had 4 people in my team we all had to do everything so, I made a clear decision in which I divided the people according to the tasks like handling outside works such as shopping, bookings, looking for the food and all. I was monitoring everything and looking after everything that everything is going according to plan. This party had 40 guests which included our General Manager, Owner, and CEO of the company. In the end, everything worked well, and everyone enjoyed the party and left home happily.
Learning: By handling this party I came to know about planning is very important while you must lead if I didn’t plan anything than this party would become a mess, and this might affect my position and confidence. I came to know bout my skills as if I will organize a party then I can manage it easily. Moreover, Communication is also an important element that enables you to know what your ideas are and what is running within your mind.
 Current Leadership Skills:
Planning: Planning is a skill That I think I have and which has helped me in the party and which will help me in the future for everything because whenever I have to start a day I always plan that what is my to-do list for the day and perform things according to my plans.
Teamwork: I think I can work as a team as I can work with the bunch of the people and in which there are various types of people So, I think I have the ability to teamwork.
  Skills Need to be improved:
Listening: I always take decision according to my team but sometimes I think I take people’s perspective in a wrong way so; I feel like listening is a skill that I would like to improve for my leadership quality.
Delegation: I would say I want to know about delegating the authorities as I am not that good to choose the right person for a particular task.

27 ways to land your first job in Graphic Design + How I did it
How I broke into design
“Why haven’t you done your maths homework?!” That’s what I’d be asked most evenings during my formative years, when I’d rather create new Transformer characters, or design new Nike Air shoes. The ability to create something from nothing and then give it personality and style was what captivated me.
During the last years of secondary school, my art teacher would let me skip other classes so I could perfect my sketching and design skills.
Thanks to being the youngest of three children (and thus being a master manipulator), I always had an excuse ready for when other teachers would ask why I’d missed their lesson.
“Although I had a wide range of interests, a career in art and design was my destiny. Until I met a careers advisor…”
My grades across all subjects were slightly above average, apart from Art & Design, where I excelled and would transform into a miserable brat if I ever achieved anything under an A grade. Although I had a wide range of interests, a career in art and design was my destiny. Until I met a career advisor…
On one particular day, pupils were invited to meet a careers advisor who would help us choose the right path when going out into the big wide world. I was ushered into a small room and met by a very bland looking middle-aged man, with a dull grey suit and a tone of voice to match. To me, my path into design was clear so I didn’t expect much help. Despite hearing my obvious enthusiasm, he dismissed my life ambition as quickly as he could roll his eyes. He told me – with absolute certainty – that I’d be wasting my time pursuing design as there weren’t any jobs or money to be made in the industry. He and other influential figures in my life proclaimed that I should follow my Sister, who excelled at all things academic, and become a manager at a leading bank in London.
And just like that, my entire career had been decided for me.
I decided (with rose-tinted glasses on) that I could make money in a standard business role and fulfil my creative dreams during my evenings and weekends. Oh, how naive I was.
I secured my first job as a production coordinator at a food and beverage trading company overlooking Tower Bridge. On my first day, I arrived wearing an ill-fitting grey suit and a carrier bag containing a just-ham sandwich and a grey umbrella. My careers advisor would’ve been so proud.
It became clear pretty quickly that there was no future for me in this industry. Any idea of fulfilling my creative dreams during my evenings and weekends were dashed by a job that drained my creative juices and demanded late nights to meet deadlines. The final nail in the coffin came when the MD would regularly send me away to a tiny, dark room alone to gather samples of citric acid which could be used to clean his yacht.
My time wasn’t completed wasted though. Not that it didn’t feel like it at the time, especially when I was being made to earn my stripes through some excessive delegation from senior colleagues who spent their afternoons in the pub. But thanks to a good work ethic and actively seeking advice from mentors, I climbed the ranks and became a manager soon enough.
Whilst I was busy wondering what education I was missing at university, I developed important, real-life skills in the workplace, where it mattered. Managing and motivating colleagues, building relationships, meeting deadlines within set budgets and problem solving helped build the foundations for running my own business later down the line.
Despite the promotion, I remained unfulfilled and I decided that my job would have to suffer in order to achieve my dream. I enrolled at the London College of Communication and took a series of courses in the evenings that would span across 3 years.
My eyes were opened immediately as I stepped through the university doors. Incredible designs, created by students, adorned the walls and provided me with a huge sense of inspiration and purpose.
“Each of us had experienced an unfulfilling career and were desperate for change.”
I met other students in a similar position to my own, who wanted to escape other careers and venture towards something creative. We shared a drive stronger than many students who take the 3 year degree in graphic design; each of us had experienced an unfulfilling career and were desperate for change.
It was during these classes that I learned the fundamentals and principles of good design. I’ll forever be thankful to the amazing lecturers, particularly to Paul Chamberlain for his seemingly unending wealth of knowledge and his willingness to share it, both in the lecture hall and in the pub.
One of my finest moments as a designer (even to this day) came during the end of year exhibition, where the best designs throughout the year were showcased to the university and public. I was shocked to find my poster layout promoting the London Olympics given a feature, receiving praise from some respected figures at the university. My work was now adorning the same halls that had so inspired me when I began the course three years prior.
That sense of achievement and pride was nothing I’d felt before; I wanted more of it!
I gave in my notice (a bit too proudly) and quit my role in food and beverage distribution and looked to the future with excitement and eagle-eyed focus.
I deleted my very corporate CV designed in Microsoft Word and set about creating a CV and portfolio that would attract a creative director. Whilst some recruiters were confused and possibly put off by my unconventional career path, I landed a role in production and design at a leading promotional merchandise company in Shoreditch.
It felt like I’d been adopted by a family rather than enduring the standard awkward greetings on a new employee’s first day. This friendly, outgoing and ambitious team, coupled with a creative role gave me unbelievable satisfaction. Plus, there were wasn’t a grey suit in sight!
Starting a design job in a promotional merchandise company wasn’t a conventional route into a design career. But then, I hadn’t followed a conventional designer’s career path. However, creating artwork and managing the end-to-end process developed that sense of responsibility for managing the client’s needs. I had the opportunity to produce innovative designs and creative promotional merchandise for major clients that helped develop my role into a senior creative and management position.
“I created my own degree”
Despite being guided to a different career path and some long hours learning graphic design, I’m thankful that I went the extra mile to achieve my dream. It wasn’t the conventional or recommended path. In a sense, I created my own degree through learning key soft-skills in the workplace during the day, whilst mastering graphic design in the evenings and weekends.
The common advice is to encourage young designers to enrol at university, which I wouldn’t argue with. My point is that there are other ways to be successful in design, especially in the modern age. Some of the largest global businesses are recognising that candidates with hands-on experience through online courses or similar methods can make the same impact as candidates with a degree. Google, Apple and IBM are amongst an increasing number of companies who no longer require applicants to have a degree. Having that work-place experience, becoming multi-skilled, developing people and management skills will help future proof your career in an age where gains in technology are at such a pace that great design skills alone won’t stop you from becoming obsolete.
An easier and more effective way of reaping the same benefits of my journey is to apply for an internship, whether you’re at university or not.
One incredible reward of an internship is that you have the opportunity to learn on the job, with an experienced designer to guide you. Learning by ‘doing’ is quicker, easier, for most of us and means that repeating the same skill next time isn’t as intimidating. You’ll feel a greater sense of achievement completing a real-life project and grow in confidence with every successful task. Becoming a skilled, reliable and integrated team member could even bring you paid work from that company, or at least a glowing reference.
Sometimes you don’t know how far you’ve come until you look back…at your Inbetweeners haircut whilst listening to some garage classics. The journey is different for us all, but the secret to achieving my dream was pretty simple. It just takes an open mind, a passion for creating, perseverance and above all, self-belief!
27 ways to land your first job in Graphic Design:
Deciding who you want to be is often not an easy decision for most of us. You may have a passion for design, but how do you go about making the jump? If you’re a budding designer, here’s my advice to securing your first graphic design job:
Starting from the bottom
There is no golden ticket into this saturated field: you must have a strong work-ethic, with the passion and imagination to get yourself noticed.
Career Change: if you’re thinking about switching careers from an industry that seems completely untransferable, it’s not too late. You may be unaware of several skills that’ll help you in design, which may put you ahead of other candidates, such as the ability to confidently pitch to clients.
Understand Graphic Design: well duh! There are some great courses on Udemy and Skillshare at amazing prices. There are also plenty of free tutorials available on YouTube.
It’s ok to be rubbish: be prepared to be absolutely useless when starting something new. This’ll help you develop patience and appreciate the mastery you’ll pick up in the long term.
Buying design equipment and software is a necessary evil: fear not! There are savings to be made. You can save around 65% on the Adobe Creative Cloud Student Subscription. Also check out Quidco for cashback on Adobe subscriptions and stock images.
Mean business: if you pursue a university degree, find courses or mentors who can teach you key business skills that’ll help you transition into the workplace.
Get organised: with so many channels available to promote yourself, organising these promotion tactics can be daunting. Set yourself achievable goals and give yourself a deadline for each. For example, learn a new software skill by the end of the month. Use a notebook to write down your plan of action, or setup a free account with Trello to organise tasks.
Create Pinterest boards: create your own Pinterest boards with designs that’ll help with inspiration for your next project. Examine what makes it a good design to help you understand the principles of design.
Look around you: Don’t rely solely on the internet for creative ideas. Look for inspiration everywhere you go and from everyone you meet.
Break out of your comfort zone: mastering one skill or piece of software is definitely a good thing, but getting out of your comfort zone and learning something new will develop confidence and provide more opportunities for future employment.
Get out there: the self-taught route can be a lonely experience. Join local groups and find other designers who can share experiences and skills. An accountability partner is a fantastic way to keep you motivated and on course.
Build on the relationships you already have: send a DM to your social media contacts and look for opportunities. Be friendly, whilst getting to the point.
Imposter Syndrome: most of us encounter this, normally early in our careers and especially if, like me, you haven’t followed the traditional route into design. Take a moment to appreciate what you’ve achieved, the positive feedback you’ve had and stop comparing yourself to others.
Understand User Experience (UX): as a designer, it’s important to put the customer first, by knowing how to design products with good usability and user pleasure.
Create a portfolio: To land that first role in design, you won’t get anywhere without a portfolio. Display only your best work, explain the challenges you encountered and the process of how you reached the final design. Proof-read the portfolio and covering letter and ask someone else to check it as well.
Free work: A very controversial topic, of which there are many opinions. I believe that whilst you’re starting out and developing a portfolio, it’s OK to offer cheap or even free work. However, make it clear to the client that you’ll be charging your standard rate for future work. As you start to show your worth and your demand rises, don’t undervalue yourself or your time.
Share your work: whether it’s on your own website (which we’d highly recommend), Behance, Dribbble, social media or Youtube, get your work out there. This is a great way to build followers and get seen by employers.
Give value: this may be difficult when you’re starting out, but simply sharing your process can inspire others. We have a free stock photo section on our website, providing free images for blogs, social media and anything else. This increases traffic on our website and increases engagement with customers.
Are you listening?: before you start creating what you think will be a great design for your portfolio, take time to understand the brief, how the design will best connect with audiences and ask questions if you’re unclear.
Sign me up: subscribe to blogs from brands that you love: Take note of why you’re attracted to them and what elements of their marketing make you want to engage with them in the future.
CV: Businesses advertising for designers often receive hundreds of applications, so it’s vital that your CV is on point. Keep it within a double sided A4 sheet. Ensure to include the following details – Full name, Job title, Contact, Objectives, Skills, Work Experience, Clients, Achievements, Qualifications and Interests. There’s no need to add your age or photo. Spelling check it, then save it as a compressed PDF and ensure all the hyperlinks work.
Don’t blanket-mail portfolios: Decide who you really want to work for. Tailor your portfolio and covering letter to the job you’re applying for. Applying for a designer role at a magazine company? Showcase your best layouts and demonstrate you understand typography. If there isn’t a contact name on the job description, phone the company and find out who will be managing the vacancy. It adds that personal touch and will help you get noticed.
Internships: As mentioned in our blog, internships are a fantastic way to develop your design and soft-skills under the mentorship of experienced professionals. Check out The Dots, Rate My Placement and Inspiring Interns for the latest placements. Once you’ve secured an internship, make yourself indispensable by doing everything asked of you. Roll your sleeves up and check if there’s anything else you can do to help the team. Going above and beyond will help you stand out and make you a valuable asset. Your team will know you’re there to learn, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.
The big interview: Before an interview, exceed expectations by doing your homework on the company and the person interviewing you. Go the extra mile by thinking of ways in which the company can improve. For example, is there a section missing on their website that would really benefit their business. And of course, arrive early, look the part, sit up straight, speak clearly, be polite and ask questions.
Tell your story: The presentation of your portfolio needs to be clear and engaging, whilst explaining the challenges, the process and outcome. Rehearse this at home in advance, as this’ll help your story flow on the day and help you gain confidence in your story. You need to believe in your own work – no one else will if you don’t. It may sound obvious but make sure that everyone can see your work during the presentation – this is your time to impress. Above all, be yourself!
Sh*t happens: There will be some obstacles along the way. Clients or employers will reject your design or application. Stay calm, keep trying and learn from your experiences. Remember, design is a very personal preference and you can’t please all of the people, all of the time.
Prove it: you’ll want to promote your soft-skills within your application or interview. It’s all well and good mentioning that you’re a troubleshooter, or team-player, but this’ll mean nothing without good and relevant examples.
Congratulations…you’re hired!
We’ll be sharing more super helpful tips and resources to help fellow creatives and businesses promote themselves. Simply subscribe here.

Wednesday/lowering the stakes
I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got. Being grateful may not be easy but its honest work. I create most of my anxiety within my mind. Even when I escape through dreams, I wake up after knowing still very well all of the things that keep me grounded, and that’s a blessing. Despite my body still targeting these feelings as attacks, the anxiety is kept more at bay. I make meaningful lists everyday to remind me of my connection to my body, this earth, the ability to see and taste and hear as time goes by. The ability to communicate and stay close and be heard or seen, translations of my energy, transformation. I can stop questioning myself and start questioning the world, and then observing. There is no answer. Only affect. Listen to the birds in the morning, wear the headphones on the train on the way to the museum and enjoy this decision I just made. It’s better to do the right things than feel remorse for choosing the option that limits me.
Doing the right thing means taking my car back, creating space for myself to heal and create, seeing all of reality as a reflection of the deeds I do. I have ambitions, I’m really passionate about observing plainly the current reality scales of existence. Importantly, it means I deeply desire to give back what I have gotten - what I am grateful for - so that collectively we can do more. I advocate for reciprocity, love and trust. I long to teach about separating from the crumbling structures of capitalism so as not to end up buried underneath. How to rely on yourself within a trusted inclusive community is a trait that can be cultivated. Although I’m not exactly cut out for leadership in the bigger sense - I have less of a divine inspiration than a cosmic mirror - I do have the endurance to perceive all existence, bit by bit, through the present moment. If I had stayed present with the fear that overcame me during the last backpacking trip, that yeah it was going to be hard but worth it for boost of affirmation and embodiment that I can control... to an extent. Truthfully, it is not only worth these pleasures if I succeed in one sense merely to ignore the twisted fate of those two nights below freezing stuck making camp at night. In a way, it also broke me free from my desire to include my parents in every step, which is a way I regress to feeling included in the game of family life. And, it showed me I still have work to do. I still need to practice the embodiment of this fear, this truth of mine, that I can’t always lead or carry the extra weight or prepare completely for the complex tasks ahead. I needed Liam’s help. The only way I knew how to ask for it was to let anxiety override my decision making. It was easier to delegate a task as a mean bossy out of control person than someone who has taken a breath, accepted things didn’t go as plan and keeping the morale - hell, maybe I’m looking at it all wrong and Liam was sucking me dry, offering no additional support (what’s a little brother to do), and therefore exposing my incapability to pick up the slack for more people than just me. The universe telling me what to really focus on, before I drag someone else in. I won’t let the beginner’s luck go to my head. These were high stakes high commitment, oddly a comfort zone that I thrive in, and feel myself in despite sometimes losing control. It always helps to reground. And I went out to nature to do just that. Regrounded, and I’ll say it was a solid C minus worth of a job I did to commune with nature and find my place in it which means more room for improvement. Anxiety disembodied (and disminded) me.
Let’s face it, that’s what confidence is - what I feel when I trust myself. If I trust that I can survive in the woods with enough practice, that’s different than saying I went into the woods in order to trust myself after I succeed. It’s using the notions of non-linear time and vision of future success as well as how I felt going through the process (not easy) and when I learned my lesson. It’s about what went well and what I could apply again and what I can drop, not whether I followed some guideline for following a break schedule. Most times I need to make an important decision, I feel myself just doing it if I really need to do it. If I have to think about it then it won’t really become anything. Take to do lists for example. Because I need anxiety and confusion at this point in order to commit to hustling through this noise, I make lists every day. These lists tell me to go to the store and buy things that help me either feed myself or maintain some aspect of my material world. They, along with the guidelines I wanted myself to follow two weeks ago, will never get done if I think about them this way because it comes down to just doing it for me. If I’m meant to do it, I don’t have to think so hard about it. The anxiety is just displacing my desire to find momentum, action, energy, to reflect. If I drug myself, I also no longer feel the pain of not being in this energy, this community, this hustle. It’s best just to exist in this humane version of torture, so that I may learn something and get better at whatever I missed out on before. But that doesn’t mean wasting time thinking things over, move the fuck on. It means dusting off the real desire, and the embodiment through which to create my own intuitive meaning from my desires. No one else will be able to tell me that, not some ancient city in europe nor a series about the afterlife nor an article about - well I guess an article about queering time is pretty directly what I need to tell me. But what I’m saying is that either way, whether I read that article or visit that place, I will still somehow get to the same result of pleasure, desire, sense, pain, grief, ecstasy, love, peace, chaos. The article won’t tell me what time is best to wake up to do all the things I want to do in the order and with the right sense of direction nor will it really give me that confidence and endurance to do it (however, every drop does count in this instance). The only way to do such things in the easiest way possible is to first ground myself, be thankful, clear your energy, move around light a candle take a bath. Then it involves trust, confidence, and endurance. Finally, it is following my path of embodiment (of desires) where it takes me, making sure to stay present and committed to myself. The part that I fear, is what I lose. I fear processing that feeling of grief, not knowing when I will next feel truly seen or heard without those past bits doing the heavy lifting. But in transformation, I don’t quite know what it will really mean to be seen or heard, and truly understood as myself, until after transformation. So in a way, I’m doing a really straight thing and unqueering the future because I think I’m actually being good by trying to anticipate it rather than live wholesomely in vision and peace with that vision. To do it all requires a new experience of and discipline of self trust and dependability of myself to myself, on the trust/shame spectrum. You can’t have one without the other.
By using embodiment to create my own intuitive meaning from my desires, I am achieving vision by being vision, not by thinking it. This is what opens the space. Using intuitive opens up, makes room, sees all of reality as a reflection of the deeds I do. Fight for love, trust, confidence, and endurance. And commit to that fight, commit to my worth, my humanity.

Reflective Questions
Which part of Unit X have you found the most useful? Why? How? So what? I found the in-person sessions with my group to be the times when we've worked most effectively; we did more work on average in the two hours in the same room when in two days over messenger and teams. I found this interesting as we have all had to get used to communicating digitally over the last year, but it doesn't come close to physical proximity in terms of efficient and effective communication and planning.
Which part of Unit X has been the least interesting? Why? Have you learned anything from that? About yourself? About others? About how you like to learn? Personally, I found the working from failure workshop to be the least useful. I have spent a long time in counselling assessing and working through my own issues surrounding failure and perfectionism, and this workshop attempted to teach me methods which differed greatly from the hard work I've done to overcome my issues and thereby triggered some anxiety I have around perfectionism and performance in school and university. Despite this, I did come away knowing more about myself, specifically about how I prefer to keep personal growth and the things I learn in counselling separate from the classroom.
What were some of your most challenging moments and what made them so? One of the most challenging things I had to do was in the organisation of the virtual screening room. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to get a budget approved in time, but I am still proud of the work I did in attempting to organise a film festival. Furthermore, I can use these skills and gained knowledge in the future, whether we end up putting on the festival in the summer, or I end up working in cinema and film programming.
What is the most important thing you learned personally? The most important skill I developed through this process was organisation and time management. As a filmmaker, I normally focus on directing and sound design and leave production and management to someone else in my crew. I believe that, now, I have the beginnings of the organisational skills needed to run a film set, which I hope will serve me well in the future.
What will you take forward after Unit X ends? Why? How will you apply your learning? Why? I think that the biggest thing I will take forward is my knowledge of my own skills and abilities. Because the unit focussed on creativity and wellbeing, I made sure to assess and acknowledge my own wellbeing throughout, and, in the process, learned how I can throw myself into a task I wouldn't think I could do, such as organizing a film festival. In addition, I learned to trust my own ideas more, as I didn't have confidence in the idea of a film festival, but I ended up combining it with another person in the group and it became the project that half the group ended up working towards.
What caused you the most effort during Unit X? Why? Did it differ from your usual practice? How? Have you taken anything from that? The most effort definitely came from the collaborative process. Normally on my course, I am working with a maximum of four other people, so collaboration on this scale was very overwhelming to me and left me with a lot of new skills in terms of working as part of a team and leading one.
Has your expected outcome of Unit X differed from your expectations? How? Why? I'm not sure what I was expecting coming into this process as the description of the unit was purposefully vague to encourage creative thinking and expression. I expected I would make a short film or documentary and write an essay explaining my process, as that is what I'm used to. In actuality, I co-founded a festival and planned an entire film festival, taking films from small creators and organizing a group watch of an important piece of LGBT+ cinema, despite the fact that the festival couldn't be fully executed in the end.
When did collaborative communications fall short of the expectations? How? Why? What did you do to overcome it? Collaborative communication was definitely difficult throughout the process due to the restrictions put in place by the pandemic. We overcame this by opening multiple lines of communication through messenger, teams, and email, as well as meeting once a week in person for strategy and planning sessions.
What most got in the way of your progress? Why? How? The biggest thing that affected our progress was the time limit. Many of us had other projects to complete and, with the deadline quickly approaching, started rushing leading to decreased quality in work and artists feeling rushed or pressured. It was because of this that we decided to postpone the festival until we have the submission and time to create an event we are all proud of.
How have you collaborated on Unit X? What has been your experience of collaboration? How has it made you feel? Why? I have collaborated heavily on this unit from the outset. We met for the first time in the second week of the Unit and decided to work together on the festival almost immediately. We delegated tasks to each other and created resources for each other to use. For example, Ana created a sheet of useful graphics for marketing including fonts and HTML codes, which I used to create the FilmFreeway page to encourage film submissions. The fact that the majority of the team has been so supportive of each other and collaborated so effectively has definitely made me feel positive towards collaboration in the future, as I have had bad experiences in the past with poor communication and not respecting each other's creative visions for projects.

Malak El Baba on Career & Family Leadership
During a rich conversation with Malak El Baba, Visa Egypt Country Manager, she talked to us about everything you need to know about female leadership, and particularly inspired us while sharing what works for her both on a personal and professional level.
Tumblr media
What attributes do you believe make a great leader?
Being empathetic: Being empathetic is not a personal trait only but also a soft skill that is needed in anyone’s career development. Empathy in a female leader promotes both cooperation and commitment in the workplace. It is an important leadership quality because it offers employees and customers alike the opportunity to be and feel heard. You will end up with happy employees, happy clients, and good bottom line results!
Being persuasive: Successful female leaders genuinely believe in their ideas and present them with full conviction and passion. Passion is incredibly compelling and can help move the needle toward success, both personally and professionally.
Being resilient: Female leaders tend to show consistency and perseverance. Despite many positive changes in the modern family setup, there is still a general tendency for women to be primary family caretakers, so managing work, home, chores and the pressure that come with them must mean we are natural multi-taskers. Being resilient through these tasks and making the impossible, seem possible – naturally – is very inspiring.
Being motivated by challenge: I have found many women I’ve interacted with to be natural creative problem solvers. The desire to overcome a challenge makes a great leader.
Being able to think big: Women can make great leaders when they harness their innate ability to dream big, challenge assumptions and inspire teams – and more importantly lead by example.
Being a good listener and communicator: Communication is a natural skill for women. Great female leaders are the ones who know how to use it with their various stakeholders. Listen and digest information before reacting and communicating openly with high emotional intelligence is a valuable way to build trust with your networks.
What are the main lessons you learned in your career so far?
If you are waiting for someone to recognize the value you bring, you may wait forever. Recognize your own worth. If you want to work on a project, speak up.
If you want to lead a team, say so. You don’t need to have a leadership title to be considered a leader in your organization. Whatever your position is, find a role you can excel in and become known for – whether it’s heading up a key initiative, solving problems or resolving conflict. At Visa, for example, we say that everyone is a leader and embracing these behaviors helps your professional and personal growth.
Let your voice be heard – getting your direct line manager or sponsor or colleagues to be your cheerleaders and amplify your efforts is great, but also try your best to grab the opportunities to share your point of view when you can.
No one will appreciate your contributions until you appreciate them yourself. Work to become known as someone who can be counted on.
How do you balance your time between work, family life and social life?
I truly believe that women are natural multi-taskers. And post COVID and working from home, we are expected to deliver even more. I have been working from home since March 2020, so I am expected to be a great leader at work, a great housewife, a collaborative partner to my husband, a great mom to my young son, an online/homeschool teacher, and a great social element in the community.
These are many expectations! Personally to balance all these, I start everyday with fifteen minutes of quiet me-time over my morning coffee. This allows me to do the following:
Set priorities
Plan. Plan. Plan
Delegate at work and in my personal life where possible
Have some time to refuel
Process and accept that it’s okay to be overwhelmed every now and then – we are humans
Pat myself on my back and feel proud of my small and large achievements
Are there any stereotypes you felt you needed to break through in our culture?
I guess being under-estimated has fueled me – with the odds against us, many of us have to fight to get to the top – and I personally am not an easy loser!
I consider myself lucky having worked for the past 9 years in a company that supports women and diversity and inclusion as part of its DNA. Internal mobility is also something that is supported. When I first joined Visa’s Egypt office, I was welcomed and accepted even as a non-Egyptian. That acceptance made me excel and become even more passionate about the place I work for.
Nine months ago, I “reset” my career and moved from marketing to the business development and sales side of the company. It was a very tough decision to do but when I think back on what I overcame:
Moving from my “comfort zone” of almost 20 years of marketing to a new space that is mainly dominated by men
Becoming the first female country manager for Egypt – and only the second in MENA
Becoming the first non-Egyptian CM for Egypt, a country that is so proud about its own talents and resources and heritage and defying a traditional CM stereotype
Achieving and building trust and support, with both our clients and my colleagues
I have to admit, it is not always easy. Anything can go wrong, but the most successful people are problem solvers who do not let their egos get in the way. You have to remain calm, confident and check your ego at the door. Listen to your team and always be committed to getting the job done. Your efforts and results will show that you’re capable and are the best person for the job. And always keep your support network close to get you through the rough days.
What advice would you like to give young women today?
On a professional level
As a leader, build teams first, products will follow.
Dream big; you can achieve.
When you truly want something, go full force after it and believe that the law of attraction will make it happen.
On a personal level
Love yourself to be able to love others.
Marry to make yourself happy, not others.
Don’t be silent.

Vibrant veins in me.
I am feeling so much grateful that you come here to know the start of my journey in my course Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.
Furthermore, I want to partake with you folks My Desired Skills be it hard skills and soft skill. I made this blog in taking part of the activity purposes.
“You are like an embellish ornament with a detailed color that makes you in bouyancy.  An inamorata that gives love to those hearts that was smashed.  A gal who would dare to be fierce and couldn’t be vent. A ladylike that is the primo in her path.”                                                             -Grant Mendaño
A pleasant day to you all folks! I am Grant Kisha F. Mendaño, 18 years of age from the Philippines and as I have stated at the beginning, I am taking the course – BSA, and I am your Future Certified Public Accountant. Yes, you read that right! a CPA, but before I’ll take another step to hold the diploma that I’m eager to have then I need first to pass this four-year course that I have chosen obviously. However, I just want to share to you all that I am a type of person who really likes to sing, read poetry and make one, learn Hangul (Korean Language) on my own, play guitar and ukulele and I’m a Pluviophile person wherein I find joy and peace of mind just watching the raindrops. Conversely, At first, I didn’t know my goals and what to do after I graduate in senior high school. I am aloof to everyone in school, but when I realized how my parents sacrificed everything, my mom and dad working overtime always, the tiredness in their eyes and body is so blunt, they’re being selfless just to give me and my three siblings a good life, I thought that I want to give them a good life that’s why when I took a stepped in becoming a senior high school student I really pour the whole thing in my studies, achieving with high grades every quarter and being top 1 in my school.
Moreover, the moment I learned that I am the Valedictorian, I was so exuberant to go home that time and make them the happiest parents in the world and what I’m expecting to them was a tear of contentment. Thus, I’m always reminiscing that part of my life on which gives me more encouragement to reach what I’ve planned for them in the future. And with that, boost my self-confidence more and me as an individual, I feel like I’m really getting connected to myself. On the other hand, I was blue for almost 1 year, some wants me to be in a thought of muddled but I realized that truly knowing your value as a person, having connected to your inner self, I’ll tell you now, no one as in No One can put you in a grave of dismay. At this point, I want to partake this to anyone who’s feeling that they can’t do anything right and having fear that they will not satisfy the people that surrounds them “Always know your worth because that will lead you in an enlightenment and to a better future.”
My achievements in senior high school.
Tumblr media
Now as you already overview my journey in life, my goals and experiences, I want to share MY DESIRED SKILLS that I want to obtain in my system.
“Hard skills are specific abilities, or capabilities, that an individual can possess and demonstrate in a measured way.”
Presentation Skills – this hard skill is really a challenging expertise to acquire for the reason that it covers the Visual communication, Slideshows, Research, Data analysis, Reporting, Persuasion, Graphic design and these insides of it for me is really hard to obtain and the field that I have chosen, this type of skill is very important to be in my system for me to become more flexible in this kind of path.
“ Soft skills are subjective skills that are much harder to quantify. Also known as “people skills” or “interpersonal skills,” soft skills relate to the way you relate to and interact with other people.”
Time management - As aiming to 1.25 grade, I seriously need to acquire this skill in my system. Yes, I do have a time management but I’m admitting that the way I manage my time is not enough for me not to procrastinate. So, through getting this skill will allow me to accomplish more things in a shorter period of time, which leads me to have a more free time, which lets me take advantage of learning opportunities, lowers my stress, and helps me focus, that I surely know leads me to a more career success. I can just have this skill if I’ll do earnestly the 4D’s: Do, Defer (Delay), Delegate, and Delete (Drop). Placing a task or project into one of these categories will help me manage my deficient time more effectively and stay focused on what matters most to me.
Anyways guys, I made some poem and I want it to share it here with you and feel free to express your thoughts about this piece I have created^^ hope you will like it!  “A compassionate heart you have but can be hellacious once you have been stepped on.                A sympathetic trait you have that shines you uniquely.               You are that person who’s aggressive but needed to be care of and love dearly.”
“Everything seems gloomy in your world.   Letting someone throw your heart out. But you managed to lit that forlorn candle of yours. Tearing every little pieces of torn in you and wears the ring that’ll make you bloom.”
“Gilt-edge that I’ve been found in lots of deserts of diamonds. Gem-like that attracts the eye of finical. A regalia that needed to be thoroughly cared of. And the current that set through the spark been happening in the veins of my heart.”
By the way, I joined a leadership training back when I was in Junior high achieving an award with my team.

☾Extended Project: The Secondary Research (Technical) ☾
When it comes to a technical side of drawing, as an Art Director, I needed to decide what would be the best way to produce work that would then be sent to the 3D modellers later on in the process. The work being sent needed to be clear and also come with image planes for the 3D modellers to work off of, all new skills for the artists to work on. Straight away, this was a difficult task for all memebers of my art group, including myself, as none of us had ever drawn an image plane before. I personally struggled with having to imagine something from a different angle or 3D perspective. Because I struggled with this, I couldn’t help the other artists so instead I showed them examples on the internet, YouTube tutorials and asked Callum, a 3D artist, to help explain how to create an image plane so that he can use. I created a few image planes throughout this project but I believe I will need more practice as I’m still not getting all the proportions correctly drawn and that would have made it hard for the 3D artists to work off of.
Tumblr media
Image Plane for Eliza
From my own personal skill point, I mainly draw digitally as I feel there is less pressure to design the correct thing first try, and I also feel digital drawing is crisper, with the possibility to edit the picture with so many more tools. My biggest decision on my own personal level was choosing what colouring techniques I preferred, whether that was through paint or water colour.
Tumblr media
Paint (Left) and Watercolour (Right)
Both look very different; paint being a very solid, thick colour, whereas water colour glides around the page and is fairly translucent. I love that paint can bring that rich colour and really emphasise an area of a drawing. I think that paint can give a drawing a more professional look due to the boldness of the colour. In terms of our project, paint would be a very good option as, even though the game is dark, it includes a lot of bright purples and greens, something paint could portray very well. On the other hand, water colour, even though soft, can create quite an eery tone due to its ‘watered-down’ colour tones. It brings a sense of mystery and shadow that again, would fit well within our game as we need to included that sense of mystery and curiosity.
To combat this issue, I have decided to colour most drawings in paint but any details I want to add some mystery or quirkiness to, I will use watercolour. Overall, I think the mixture of both colour techniques will work quite well as they are bringing both bold and eery connotations to each drawing.
Tumblr media
Eliza Has Been Coloured with Paint Except her Hair which is Done in Watercolour
Over the course of this project, I really wanted the chance to be able to improve my digital drawing skill as that is the industry standard in game companies. Moving from pencils and paper to using Adobe Sketch on my iPad has been a turbulent journey, with me feeling frustrated and confused on why I could draw on paper but not digitally. However, I practiced everyday and learnt quickly on how I have to hold the pen slightly differently, for example. Now I much prefer working on my iPad due to the final drawing being of a much high quality.
Changing and developing my art style to turn it more ‘Tim Burton-esque’ was quite easy for me as I still haven’t really found my own style so using his designs as inspirations really helped me establish more of a grasp on my own art style. However, a lot of the artists in group B didn’t have such luck with changing their art style. They didn’t really want to adapt their art style for this project as they were comfortable drawing how they knew, but me and Lauren wanted them to step out of the box and try doing something they hadn’t done before. Some artists also hadn’t researched into Tim Burton and his work so didn’t really know the style they were trying to take inspiration from. They hadn’t grasped his consistent art style such as the big round eyes, so again, me and Lauren pushed for them to look into and research him. Finally, we had a extreme problem with attendance, with most of group B not coming in regularly. Due to this, they hadn’t learnt and gotten to know the characters the writers had created for the story, making it a lot harder for them to create a personality through the drawing of the character. To counteract this fairly crucial problem, I created an art guide of the facial features of characters and which characters would have a specific feature. In the corner, I also added information on what pen size or colour to use and how to add detail if needed, such as shading.
Tumblr media
Eyebrow ‘How To’ Guide
There were a few practical and technical issues along the way when creating artwork for the game. The first problem we encountered was that not everyone knew how to use Photoshop confidently or how to draw digitally in general. A lot of the artists felt more comfortable drawing in pencil on paper so encouraging them to move their work to Photoshop was quite a difficult task. I was able to show my group a few tips on how to work well in Photoshop but most of the group A artists took their own initiative and found tutorials on how to use the software.
Another problem me and Lauren faced as leaders is trying to help other artists learn how to create image planes for the 3D artists to work off of. Like I mentioned before, this was hard as most of us had never tried to show our 2D work from a 3D perspective so it was definitely a learning curve in the journey of our art skills. The best me and Lauren could do was show the other artists example of 3D image planes and get them to watch tutorials to grasp a true understanding on how to create them.
From a leadership point of view, I learnt a lot about how to run this process in the best possible way. My goal form the beginning was to make every artist feel involved and proud of their work, make them feel like they contributed to the making of the game. In the specialism essay I did for a previous unit, it was interesting to discover the best ways to head my group, making sure I exhibited excellent organisational and time management skills and also bring an excellent blend of people skills and an ability to implement and enforce rules and regulations effectively. I believe I have done well leading group A art group as all artwork produced has been successful and to a really high standard. Everyone in the group gets on and feels counted for, Nathan and Ryan seemed to have become best friends!
Delegating tasks was also a crucial part of the organisational and leadership skills I needed to use to lead my group successfully to the end of this project. Every week I made sure that all my artists knew what they were doing and felt like they could answer me any questions if they were unsure about the task they wer set. I was very open and welcome to suggestions made by artists as I wanted to get second views and opinions on things, but I was also strong enough to make decisions and not let people voice their ideas louder than other memebers of the group.

Leadership Development (Final Reflection)
Effective leadership is critical to the ongoing success of teams and organisation. The leadership development course provided me with the knowledge, skill and self-awareness to act as an effective leader and contribute to the leadership and on-going improvement process of the leadership qualities and change in the team and at workplace. It helped me to identify the leadership opportunities and challenges faced by the organisation using relevant management and leadership theories. Taught me how to formulate the leadership development plan through enhanced self-awareness of my core strengths, values, cognitive style and conflict management styles. How to apply appropriate motivation, leadership theories and engagement techniques to bring the best out of followers. How to  select the appropriate leadership and followership style using various analytical tools and techniques like problem-solving,Team MoU template, behavioral and contingency approach, using levels of team development stage in a variety of situation. The course also gave me an insight of how to use the appropriate communication strategies to support the leadership initiatives and establish a climate that fosters creativity, innovation, change and builds teamwork.
Tumblr media
Being an active sports person during my schooldays and strong upbringing by my parents with moral values and traits help build the qualities of a leader in me. Everyone during their young age would have had a leader in their minds as their inspiration as a follower and aspired to be a Leader of that sort someday. As a kid, even I used to follow the principles of many leaders like Swami Vivekananda, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Warren Buffet etc., and always aspired to be famous like them one day. As I started following them a lot of question used to linger in my mind as to how are these leaders born? Are they born leaders, or do they become leaders over the passage of time? What qualities should one poses to become a successful leader? Why is that only a few are in the limelight while others aren’t? I used to wonder as to what urged them to become a leader and create a legacy that even now people across globe and by generations are yet following them?
With the advent of technology, all thanks to the internet, my learnings from the books I read, my mentors who help me build the leadership skills and traits within me and who taught me what leadership is all about and why is it important to poses these qualities as a leader , the societal norms that people had created and my friends who’s stories have always been and will be my inspiration and the people who I meet across my expedition on life had helped me to find answers to these questions. They have been a great source of influence and motivation in my life.
With all the knowledge I had gained over the years, I was able to understand what truly defines to be a leader. According to me, Leadership is that one great interpersonal quality that every individual pose from within. It is a very fine line that distinguishes between how to be and not how to do. To make that choice lies in the hands of leader and that is why renowned leaders have left a strong mark in hearts of the people for a lifetime and are still a living inspiration for millions of younger and future generations. of a democratic leader that eventually lead my team to win many events. When I was an NCC leader, During my schooldays, when I was given a chance to be a leader I tried to implement all the qualities I was able to build trust among my team , efficiently delegated the work, listen to their issues, resolve the conflicts and these core leadership skills had helped me to perceive the goals to the fullest. From my experience, I learnt that a person is said to be a good leader if he/she can win peoples heart and bring changes to their lives by being fearless.
Taking up the leadership development course again on my new expedition of life has enthralled and influenced me to learn more and develop the traits for being a successful leader ahead. Coming to Sheridan College, working with such great people from different cultures who are unique in their own way has helped me develop as a person and recognize my new strengths as a leader. Thank you, Prof., Carol for being kind enough to provide me the opportunity to explore my capabilities of being a leader. Getting to know you in person has made me realise that life is still a learning and we have the right to live it our way. Being a leader and earning money alone is not important how you take that learning and use them diligently to make a difference in people’s life is very important.
Starting the course with five step leadership templates gave me an outlook of how and what the entire learnings about leadership and the desired result of it would be. Analysing and assessing one’s style of leadership is the foremost challenging step for an individual. The MBIT and Gallup’s Strength Finder test taken during the second week resonated me to closely find out my core five strengths (Achiever, Developer, Input, Responsibility and Learner) that I pose as a leader. The tool created a self-awareness of what my strengths are without giving much negative feedback and gave me an insight of how to put them into action while working in a team. To be an Authentic leader, it also helped me know my core values and  cognitive style of thinking (INTJ) .Sharing this with my teammates had helped me build my confidence and lead to a positive and productive environment. Moreover, in future it will help me to align my job and goals with my natural talent. Knowing each other key strengths helped us as a team to be focus on delivering best results and create a positive and productive environment.
Resolving the conflicts efficiently was always my weakness and learning the model of conflict resolution gave me the guidance of how to identify and approach them. The lesson that learnt from the model is that, being assertive and accommodating the needs of others over one’s own needs will help to better resolve the conflict and bring harmony among the members in the team. In future, I would try to implement behaviour roles while working with my team because adopting these roles would help us to excel and achieve the goals in the longer run.
Furthermore, from the third weeks module one of the key element that I got to learn was building trust. I personally got to experience how building trust among the members can lead to a high-performance team. Being the Leader- facilitator, for me, the major success factor was that everyone was committed to the goal and purpose of the project and had strong team cohesiveness which helped us to deliver the best result. I am happy that within a short span of time I got a chance to build the teams trust on me. Their continuous motivation and trust on me gave me the strength to deliver my first presentation well, without letting down my team. That moment made me realize the true value of trust and what difference it can make in a person’s life. Assessing our Team MoU brought us together to rectify and solve our issues coherently and gave an insight of how to improve as team to reach the goal.
Tumblr media
Leaders are said to be able to influence people in working towards accomplishing a common goal.. Team development is the key area of leadership that I can naturally relate myself to. To be a more effective leader, I would use my developer and responsibility strengths to encourage my team members in this area which would lead to high performance. My near obsession of doing things right, in future, would help subordinates to live up their commitments and their success would eventually lead to their growth as a leader. As a leader, I played a socioemotional role that largely contributed to my teams’ development and it might also be one of the roles which I would like to change in future. Moreover, this role might not be effective on the longer run and when I look back on this team now, the one thing that I would like to change would be some dysfunctions which includes avoidance of accountability and inattention to results which lead to some conflicts in the end.
Problem- solving and decision making are the important skills for business and life. We as a team got to learn to utilise the template to resolve the conflicts occurring among the team members or to solve a problem in the organisation. The advantages of using this template  is that it gives  a clear view to identify and solve the issue immediately. It will help them to analyse and assess the core issue and construct plans achieve the original goal.  . The most challenging part of this template is implementing the planed action and to provide the right solution to solve the issue without much negotiations. Further the beneficial part was to identify the key strengths and root cause of the conflict. The breakdown of problem solving process from solution analyses to implementation of the plan makes it easy and effective for the leaders to lead teams and accomplish the task. From the give problem solving template the most critical leadership requirement for a leader is effective communication and the ability to shape the culture and values to compete, grow and achieve the goal of the organisation.
Tumblr media
From the following classes I also learnt that along with the quality of building trust and resolving conflict a leader must also be an effective communicator and listener. The leader who has the quality to show his gratitude and empathy towards others with high emotional intelligence is said to a successful leader. It is important for a leader to choose the right channel to communicate their vision to the team members and lead them to be followers. Along with that a leader most also know how to motivate their employees by providing the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and work towards fostering creativity, change and teamwork. Overall this course has broadened my vision on leadership and help develop a new leader in me.

Mel Feller Looks Scheduling Your Success Starting Today by Mel Feller
Mel Feller views the New Year as the season of rebirth and renewal and what better time than New Year’s Eve to look forward toward success. Whether you are self-employed or punch a clock, being organized and productive releases stress and helps you face adversity and become more resilient.
Taking three simple steps to gain control of your calendar and your life will help you succeed. Here are my top three timesaving tips that will propel you toward a more successful 2019:
Regain control of your email inbox. If you have multiple email accounts and get duplicate messages, email overload will soon wear you down. Knowing that when you log in you will be faced with hundreds, or even thousands of emails, take a mental toll. Take time now to regain control — set aside a couple of hours in the first week of the year to clean out your inbox. Once you have read, responded or deleted messages, you need to set aside time on a daily basis to tackle the inbox or it will become unmanageable in a short amount of time.
Delegate. Delegate. Delegate. What items on your to do list can you offload? What tasks do you have on your to-do list that you never get to because they simply aren’t a priority? Cross them off. Delegate tasks to others if that is an option. Look at your tasks and determine whether you have made some of them more difficult than they need to be. If they are, simplify them and cross them off.
“Yes” and “no” are your most powerful tools. Learn to use them both wisely. When you’re asked to volunteer, take on a new task, attend a networking event… take a moment and ask yourself whether this task will enhance your career or your life; will it fulfill you or drain you; does it take you further toward your path of success or will it draw you away from it?
Therefore, if you do not actively fill up your daily schedule with your highest priority and most important work, it is going to automatically be filled up with less important work. I cannot tell you what that other stuff will be for you, but I can tell you it probably will not be the work you need to do to achieve your most important goals in life. When low priority activities take up too much of your time, you end up feeling as if you are just too busy to make real progress.
When you spend most of your time doing tasks that you do not enjoy, that you are not good at, or that are not leading you where you want to go, your work and life becomes a struggle to succeed. The simple solution is to schedule your most important activities on a daily basis and ensure that you are doing your most important work first.
Oh sure, you’d love to spend more time with your family and friends, work more on your dream projects and goals, and enjoy more vacations, but you’re just too busy. If that sounds like you, this book will help you get your time back. It will help you identify the low priority activities that are sucking your time and energy and keeping you from achieving the success you desire.
The first step is to create awareness. Your journey to a completely new level of productivity, success and fulfillment is just beginning when you start to realize the way you are currently spending your time will not get you where you want to go.
Do you find yourself in a constant state of mental chaos? Do you feel like your career goals and lifetime dreams just can’t be met no matter how hard you work to achieve them?
There is a reason, you will never reach your full potential unless you move from being an imposter to being who you really want to be by being deeply authentic. No amount of material possessions, money, or high-ranking career position will make you happy or feel fulfilled if your inner confidence does not match your external success. Mel Feller and Coaching for Success 360 coaching and the art and science of self-mastery will transform your life and get you there.
Instead of traditional and motivational touchy-feely coaching, my style is edgy, bold, straightforward, instructional and results-driven. Motivation is great but only if you do something with it!
Mel Feller chooses to work with people I feel a deep trust and connection with so we can make change on a cellular level, cognitively with passion and high-energy. No lies. No bull. No excuses. Purity, honesty, hard work.

How to Delegate for Maximum Productivity
TL;DR
Systems determine business success, not talent; build the right systems to ensure your development, sales, and service run smoothly
When you hire, be sure your candidate has skills that have a place in your company and can contribute to your longterm goals; don’t just hire for a position or a task
Maintain open communication with employees and provide both positive and constructive feedback for improvement; if they are not performing well, move them elsewhere in the company where their skills will be better put to use
Spread project execution across a larger group, giving many people the change to contribute and a clear view of how other employees work
Know what you should delegate and what you shouldn’t; stay in control of your finances and brand
Don’t confuse delegation and abdication; proper delegation allows you to retain oversight and control, while abdication turns success or failure entirely over to someone else who doesn’t have a vested interest in your company
Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Jonathan Cronstedt, President of e-learning company Kajabi. Cronstedt has several successful stints as CEO or founder under his belt, so I wanted to talk about the pervasive problem of bad (or no) delegation in the entrepreneurial world.
To best illustrate the lessons he learned in this arena, I decided to retrace his career steps, starting in his college days…
In the early summer of 2002, Cronstedt landed a sales job at Fletcher Jones Motorcars.
The job was, as he recalls, very regimented: “Everything funneled through the Business Development Center at the dealership, and all of the calls were scripted. It was very systematic.”
That systematic approach was a form of “designed delegation” that ensured sales representatives never left clients in the lurch—a follow-up was always delivered by staff members whose specific job was to maintain communication with prospects and customers.
This model had a huge impact on Cronstedt, who moved on to employ the same systems and strategies in the mortgage industry.
He admits that being on the “receiving” end of these marching orders made him bristle initially. But that might just be a characteristic of the sales industry: “I think sales people in particular don’t like to be told what to do,” Cronstedt said. “They think it’s their talent, not the systems they work with, that makes them successful. But they very quickly begin to realize, as I did, that it’s the systems, not the talent, that make the sales.”
This team-based approach to success was also key to Cronstedt’s successful leadership at Independent Financial Mortgage, just a few years after he left Fletcher Jones. But there were differences, too.
For instance, the Business Development model at Fletcher Jones would never have allowed managers to dip into sales, even if they were technically in charge of sales reps. For Cronstedt, that didn’t quite fit in the mortgage biz.
“Even when I built and managed teams to handle increased work, I never stopped originating loans myself. You need to know how to do something yourself before you delegate it,” he explained to me.
That led me to another question in Cronstedt’s meteoric rise: Scaling is great, and so is staying connected to the day-to-day work, but how do you know when it’s time to bring on new talent?
“When you run out of hours in the day,” he said, succinctly. “If you can’t continue to achieve individually, you’re going to have to find a way to scale the performance to meet the goals you’ve established. That comes through systems improvement or people improvement—preferably both.”
Cronstedt is quick to point out, however, that as he moved from auto sales to mortgage and beyond, what became clear was the need to constantly evaluate the systems and workload across the company. It wasn’t a quarterly thing—it happened every day.
A lot of the reshuffling of work hinged on a very simple question that Cronstedt regularly asked himself: “What tasks that don’t require higher-level skills or training can I take off the plates of senior employees and managers? How much more could they accomplish if they didn’t have to worry about those things?”
This kind of delegation touched on his own workload, as well. “Fortunately,” he said, “letting go has never been hard for me. I was more than willing to turn tasks over to someone else—if that helped the systems work as they were built to.”
“I think entrepreneurs have a hard time letting go,” he continued. “They’re too connected to everything. And even when they do, they often don’t have systems in place to set their employees up for success. So, their employees fail and the whole thing becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. ‘See,’ they say, ‘I knew I should never have delegated that work.’”
So, I echoed, the systems make or break the company.
But there’s another way to ensure an employee is set up for success, he added: Hire the right people.
Easier said than done, of course, but that’s why there’s a system in place for hiring, too. “If we hire well, we’re confident in a candidate’s abilities. We won’t leave them hanging, even if they’re not being successful. We’ll try to find another place in the company where they will be successful.”
For Cronstedt, the guiding metrics for a successful sales hire were easy to define. But not every role can be judged easily by hard and fast numbers. Still, he argues, you need to put numbers to the hiring process—you need to be able to say, “I’m hiring this person to have X measurable impact. That means they need to have Y qualities or credentials and have accomplished Z in their career.”
At this point in our discussion, I played devil’s advocate, curious how the system would work in Cronstedt’s mind if the employee believed that he or she wasn’t being given the right kind of opportunity. “What if you place them somewhere that you think is a good fit, but they disagree?” I prodded.
“Feedback should be open,” he answered. “But that goes both ways. Take Netflix, for example. They managed to successfully move from their DVD model to streaming video and hire incredibly talented individuals while operating in a Silicon Valley world where the benefits war was often unsustainable. How? Well, one of the reasons is their open communication. If you do a good job at Netflix, you’re going to know. And if you’re doing a crappy job, you’re going to know—and know quick. That’s true across the company.”
This regular check is what keeps employees on point, and identifies mismatched skills and tasks as soon as they start to drag down performance. It also creates a culture of affirmation for employees that are very successful.
But that kind of feedback has to be bi-directional, Cronstedt says. At Kajabi, he has instituted an open-door policy for the company. This gives employees and managers the opportunity to address both good and bad performance right away—and find a fix. No more holding on to these problems for yearly reviews (that may or may not happen).
And there’s an even more ingenious way of keeping responsibilities visible across the company: Spread product execution across the organization—without siloing tasks that leave coworkers in the dark about other employees’ productivity. Cronstedt says it’s far better to spread a project across a group instead of leaving it to a single person or only a few people. Not only does this promote collaboration, but it gives employees a sense of what other skills are employed across the organization. With an open door communication policy, they can always go to the boss and say, “I think my skills could be better used here.”
“What about being a manager of managers?” I pivoted. “How involved are you still in the daily workings of the company so you can effectively train managers to lead a productive, efficient team?”
“I let a lot of it go,” he told me. “What I’ve found is that getting my hands dirty with day-to-day tasks as I’m training or guiding a manager doesn’t really build rapport or help them succeed. I like to think of it this way: ‘I’m hiring you to do this job, but I’m going to set up guardrails to make sure you are successful.’” When the right time comes, Cronstedt says, the guard rails come down.
Again, he points to the delegation issue with entrepreneurs. In some cases, as mentioned before, entrepreneurs who are emotionally connected to their entire business have a hard time letting go of work and don’t set employees up for success when they do.
But other times, they delegate eagerly—without really knowing what or why they’re delegating. Cronstedt mentioned advertising as a common example.
“A lot of entrepreneurs I know will delegate Facebook advertising, but they’ll have no idea what the outcomes should be, what their desired ROI is, or what time investment is involved. Now, I’m not going to set up a Facebook campaign myself as president or CEO of a company, but I know where it fits in my business model and I know what to expect from a given investment. Many entrepreneurs don’t, so they’ll fire an ad consultant or employee after a short period of time just because they’re not getting the results they want.”
I might have dug a bit deeper on this point, asking Cronstedt what specific areas entrepreneurs tend to delegate in ignorance, but I thought it best to close with a pointed question about 2018 delegation tips for those eager to launch their own companies.
“What is timely advice would you give ambitious startup owners in 2018?” I asked.
“First, don’t delegate things you don’t understand. Second, know what you should delegate and what you shouldn’t. For example, I think delegating accounting is great, but delegating the checkbook is not. If you’re not on top of the finances of your company and you’re assuming somebody else is going to mind the store, that’s a huge gamble.”
“Also,” he added, “I think outsourcing marketing is one thing, but outsourcing the establishment of your brand/story is not something I would let another person do. That’s yours.”
Cronstedt closed on a note of caution: “Be aware of the difference between delegation and abdication,” he said. “If you are delegating properly, you have some level of strategy in mind—some responsibility, oversight, and monitoring of execution. You start abdicating when you think things like, ‘Oh, I hired that person, so now I don’t need to touch it ever again.’”
During our conversation, Cronstedt mentioned several resources for entrepreneurs and startup owners that are helpful for management, organization, and delegation. Here’s a summary of those resources:

Movement and Motion
Reflection...
This semester, I have undergone a rollercoaster of emotions. From feeling confused about what the word “Movement” meant to me personally, to feeling proud now of what my group and I have created in the matter of 8 weeks. WOW! Time really does fly. To me, this has been the most fast-paced Semester I have experienced, mainly because our Project was semester-long, and having to focus on one outcome for 8-9 weeks, compared to 4 Projects in 12 weeks in Semester One. Due to this, I had been feeling that I have not achieved much in this Semester compared to the first one. However, after finally submitting our work on Monday morning (and getting quite emotional afterwards), I have come to realise how much I have changed and learned throughout my journey and experiences in Studio this Semester.
What skills have I gained?
Teamwork and Communication Skills - Working with 4 (5 including Karen) unknown people on a Semester-long Project was a bit overwhelming. As I had mentioned in my Group Proposal Blog (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/164587372341/group-proposal) our team was formed due to us being the leftover students without a group. Starting with a quick brainstorm of ideas and our interests, we later progressed into forming a group of our own. Now, I hadn’t even talked much to Kelvin, Karen, Matt, Simon and Shades before, let alone work with them, so this was a huge step for me. Seeing as I didn’t know any of them quite well, I kind of took charge and lead the group. All of our ideas were so different that it was difficult to integrate and come to a single solution, nevertheless, we agreed upon working towards the brief - “Our proposal is to evaluate the effectiveness of screen-based interactive multimedia artwork as a method of communication of emotional content. Through iterative processes we will build a multi-sensory interactive work to stimulate the senses to evoke emotional response within the participant(s). The criteria of engagement, enjoyment, retention of experience and level of distraction will be evaluated using various qualitative means.” It was after the break that I started to feel a part of this Group. And through working together, delegating tasks and understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses, we were able to design and develop our final concept, which has now been successfully constructed for the Showcase. As a group, we also decided to contact each other through a Facebook Messenger group chat, in which we discussed our ideas and made plans. In my opinion, this was very beneficial as it meant that we didn’t have to spend Studio II time discussing little matters instead of progressing with our work. And for me, this definitely improved my communication skills because I was able to express my opinions digitally as well as verbally.
Friendship - Not having known the rest of the group members properly before, I’m now so surprised by how quickly we all understood each other. During the early stage of this Project, we started to know each other’s strength and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, skills etc. and I can now proudly say that we have formed a friendship amongst us. Although we may not work together after this Project, there will be a bond between the 5 of us. I have created so many memories by working with Kelvin, Matt, Simon and Shades this Semester and we share inside jokes and happy times, and I know that if I ever need their help, they will always step up. Friendship is not something that can be evolved quickly, but it is very important, especially when working in a group, because we have to be able to understand where a person is coming from. And in our case, we started the this journey soon after we formed our Group. This experience has made me feel more closer to my teammates, and classmates in general, because I feel like I have a friendship with everyone. And for me, this means that I am comfortable with working with anyone next year.
Time Management - To be honest, I really believe that my time management skills have improved immensely over the Semester. Compared to last semester where I used to struggle with Blogging and procrastinate moat of the time, I have now started to Blog regularly and minimise procrastination. I guess what has really helped me is using Trello, as well as writing weekly Time-Management Blog posts (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/166283382746/time-management) (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/166057816481/time-management) in order to stay on track, list the incomplete tasks and measure the level of practicality for completion. I know that these skills can still be improved but right now, I am very proud to have finished my work on time. Next year, I will focus more on reducing the time spent on procrastination as it is another thing I struggle with.
Coding/Programming - Having to start this Project knowing that we are creating a visual screen based installation, I was a bit nervous because my coding skills are as good as my whistling ability (FYI, I can’t whistle properly, I can only blow air through the mouth which creates a very soft sound). So, being in-charge of coding for the visuals projected onto the screen, I was feeling even more overwhelmed. I started looking through some codes from the “Programming for Creativity” lectures from last Semester, which helped me remember the coding style and possibilities. Working towards one theme - Space - made it easier for me, because I could start focusing on particular aspects of the theme, instead of learning basically everything first and only using a little bit of the learned knowledge (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/165993484421/movement-and-motion) (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/166057834511/movement-and-motion) (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/166070078141/movement-and-motion). Seeing as Kelvin was coding the Kinect, he was also a huge help when coding for the visuals because he introduced us to a new and contrasting idea, for which I am very grateful to him because we ended up using that as part of our final Visuals coding (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/166319762556/movement-and-motion). So, making constant iterations and looking online for solutions, I can now proudly say that I have become a better coder than I was in Semester One. I am actually very happy to have taking lead in this aspect of the project, because it has helped me improve my skills, gain confidence, while also learn new knowledge about coding in Processing.
Handling Textiles? - When we knew that our screen was based off a piece of fabric, I was confused as to how we would stretch it properly. After coming up with a few ideas, we concluded with sewing velcro to the fabric and then attach it to the frame. Now, sewing was actually such a daunting task for me, to start with, however, I soon started to get over my fear of the sewing machine and we managed to complete the screen (https://vaanibct.tumblr.com/post/166765564111/movement-and-motion). Although Miranda helped us greatly, I was still quite proud of myself for learning a new skill and growing out of my fears. This experience has also taught me that “Life does, in fact, start outside our comfort zone.” And getting out of my comfort zone is a huge deal for me because, in some cases, I’m usually scared of trying new things, however, I have now decided to take more risks and learn new things next year, in order to up-skill myself and teach me to become better than I was yesterday.
What have I learned?
To sum it up, I have grown miraculously over the course of this Semester. As a student of Creative Technologies, I believe that I now have more and improved skills, as well as the knowledge of using, understanding and integrating different practices from multiple domains in order to work towards an outcome. I have also learned to be more resilient and being comfortable to work with people other than my friends. This is because I have understood the importance of diversity in teams and would like to find and work with both like-minded and different people in order to experience the difference of ethics between each experience, which will help me choose my teams wisely for bigger Projects in third year of BCT and also in a workplace in the future.
One aspect of this Project that I would have liked to improve is the “research.” Due to Matt being the conceptual researcher of the group, I think I relied solely on him to explain his research and results rather than exploring the concept myself as well. This could be due to the lack of time I had, because I had other tasks to finish, and that built up the pressure of researching for precedents and the reason behind our concept during the last days of the Project. Usually, I feel like I’m good at researching and analysing information in order to assist my Projects, however, this was a huge project for me and I think that I prioritised other tasks first when I really should have conducted a research to help us forward.
Overall, I am happy with the end result. I am also very proud of all the group members, Matt, Simon, Shades and Kelvin, because we all have put in so much effort and time into the construction of the Installation, along with working together, helping one another, and having each other’s backs. Yes, there are some aspects that could have been improved, however, a lesson I have learned is that, “In the future Group Projects, I will ensure to delegate tasks fairly, so that we all are contributing our 100% to the group, as well as forming a smaller group.” The reason for a smaller group is that - last semester, I was in a group of two, which did built up the workload, however, we were able to make decisions much quicker and move on. However, in a group of 5, it is a bit difficult to agree on one thing, therefore leaving us less time to get on with our work. I think that a good group should consist of 3-4 members as it is much easier to work together and avoid the lack of quick design-making.

Where to now?
Next year, I plan on working in teams with students I have not yet worked with, in order to learn new knowledge and also gain experience of working with a diverse group of people. I will also work towards building my skill-set over the holidays, which should help me to improve my habits and allow me to have a range of knowledge from various domains. My goal for next year, for the first semester at least, is to challenge myself and take risks because I have realised that it plays a huge part in self-improvement and also learning to be resilient. I also plan on working towards my iteration skills, because it is crucial for the development of a Project. Due to me being one of the visual coders, I had to code various designs in order to decide which ideas best suit the concept behind the Project. And due to my lack of iterating, we were glued to a single idea. So, I intend on learning to unleash my creativity and think of more relatable ideas in order to arrive to the best design.
To end, I’d like to say that Year 1 of BCT has flown by extremely fast. I still remember my first day in Studio, being confused yet excited, happy to make new friends and take on the challenge of the ‘Cards for Play’ Assignment. I can proudly say that I now have definitely evolved as a Creative Technologist, because I have gained more knowledge of the variety of practices in this field and also developed my way of thinking. I have also seen the students around me, my friends and classmates, develop and change overtime, for good. They have also come on this long journey wiht me and I am also very proud of them.
I can’t wait of the Showcase and I know that we all have achieved an immense amount to be proud of. I also know that we all will do great and get the results we deserve.
