2019 Howard M. Shum Awards
As we usher the new year, let’s take one final and definitive look at the best of 2019.
Film - “Parasite”  Directed by Bong Joon Ho. With all the twists and surprises in this great film, the less you know going in, the better it’ll be. Just know it’s about a family of con artists in South Korea.
Foreign Language Film - “Birds of Passage” Directed by Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego. Written by Jacques Toulemonde Vidal, Maria Camila Arias. Instead of choosing Parasite again, I’m picking another good film. This is set in Columbia in the late ’60s - early ’70s and about the start of the drug trade there. It is Godfather-esque.
Director - Bong Joon Ho. “Parasite” South Korea has been making some of the best cinema in the past decade not just of Asia, but of the world.
Actor - Eddie Murphy “Dolemite Is My Name” Murphy plays Rudy Ray Moore who wants to make a movie and nothing will stop him, be it lack of funds or acting skills.
Actress - Jessie Buckley, “Wild Rose“ Just out of prison with kids she doesn’t know how to raise, this aspiring country singer living in Scotland longs to sing in Nashville. Things happen, not in a Hollywood way and that’s a good thing.
Supporting Actress - Kathy Bates, “Richard Jewell” Sam Rockwell was also excellent in this true story by Clint Eastwood.
Supporting Actor - Shia LeBeouf “Honey Boy“ It’s interesting to see LeBeouf play a character based on his father who shouldn’t be looking over a kid.
Screenplay - “Parasite”  Written by Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won. Too many TV shows and movies are predictable. I like watching things that I can’t guess will happen such as Parasite.
Cinematographer - Roger Deakins “1917” Set in World War I, Deakins made it seem as if the entire film was made with one continuous shot. It’s an incredible feat!
Television Show Drama - “Mr Inbetween” The life of a hitman in Australia when he’s not killing people.
Television Show Comedy - “PEN15”  Two adult women playing 13-year-olds is good comedy.
Television Actor - Mahershala Ali “True Detective” I liked all the True Detective seasons, yes including season 2.
Television Actress - Emilia Clarke “Game of Thrones” Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.
Cartoon - South Park. Matt Stone and Trey Parker continue to be the at the top in satire in our generation. The good thing is they have no fear to go to where other fear to tread. Mega corporations and dictatorial governments beware.

Movie Review: Birds of Passage
Tumblr media
Shortly after the film opens, an old man sings a discordant song, setting the backdrop for us. A man dances with a teen girl just come into her womanhood; it is a ritual dance, and as we watch we quickly figure out that whoever can stay in step with her is worthy to become her husband. The dance is depicted, like the entire film, with neither sentimentality nor melodrama. The beauty of the indigenous outfits, the spare nature of the people’s desert home, the weathered lines of hard life on even young faces, all might tempt a filmmaker to go the Malick route, with painterly framing and languid, visual-focused camerawork. The song being sung, straightforward with no attempt at melody or rhyme, should tell us different: this is a place where things are straightforward and, as it happens, often brutal.
That remains true when drugs become involved. The dancing man is Rapayet (Jose Acosta), who successfully wins the right to marry the alluring Zaida (Natalia Reyes), but just because he has the right doesn’t mean he has the coin. They are both members of the Wayuu tribe of Colombia, and in addition to this ceremonial wedding tradition, a dowry is demanded, more than Rapayet can offer. It’s easy enough to fix that by doing a quick marijuana sale with his non-Wayuu friend Moises (Jhon Narvaez). The customers: highly irresponsible American Peace Corps volunteers who hand out anti-Communist literature but are more interested in getting high and partying than helping local tribes. Over the course of years and mounting tensions between the head of another family (Juan Bautista), the drug trade slowly devours everyone involved.
The tendency of Hollywood films is to depict the drug trade south of our borders as a matter of ruthless warlords living in Caesar-like luxury, draped in finery and surrounded with barely-clad hired women as they wantonly step on the lives of those less fortunate. The characters here have simpler ambitions: to support their families, to defend the honor of their clan, to escape crushing poverty. These desires frequently conflict. Some of the decisions Rapayet must make are necessary to secure the safety of his family, but are against the values of his culture, and since the attempt is to depict something like realism, there are no solutions that satisfy both these conditions. Comparisons to The Godfather are inevitable. Rapayet has a nephew, whose name of Leonidas (Greider Meza) is possibly significant, who is a child when the drug trade reaches his tribe and who thus grows with it, resulting in a maladjusted youth used to wealth and power. When he offends their rival family, the heads of the families meet and discuss how they will settle this, and these negotiations are as tense as any shootout, because the potential for violence balances on every word and action of each person involved. Most of the film consists of conversations between family members and rivals, and in the cases where something violent happens, it is a break in the normal flow of business.
Tumblr media
Ciro Guerra, whose film Embrace of the Serpent was also clearly inspired by the likes of Malick and Herzog, directed this film with his then-wife Cristina Gallego, and the production was marked by both cooperation with the real-life Wayuu and the disintegration of the couple’s marriage. I can’t say how much of that found its way into the film, other than to note the events seem to be viewed at a certain remove. The film’s arms-length perspective continues right up to what might be called an obligatory violent finale, in which a desert fortress is assaulted not from the perspective of a frenetic action camera, but from a single, stationary viewpoint. When Rapayet’s rivals come for him personally, we are expecting some sort of a fight, and instead we get a sad, forlorn ending in which he seems to simply know his time is up. David Gallego’s camera stays above the scene, and I had the distinct feeling of floating away, as if everything Rapayet once hoped for had wafted away on the wind. The screenplay, by Maria Camila Arias and Jacques Toulemonde Vidal, is given to the simple dialogue of everyday life, rather than grandiose movie-ready lines.
Films about drugs made in the states often portray those who deal them in our own country as victims of circumstance, and those who deal them elsewhere as pure evil, but of course the South American drug trade wouldn’t exist without North American demand. Given that it will be seen by few U.S. viewers, Birds of Passage probably won’t change many perceptions, but those who track it down may end up with a new perspective on a frequently stereotyped culture and country. It may not be exactly true to historical fact, but the job of the movies is to draw us into a version of reality using emotion, and that’s accomplished here, making a complex topic understandable and relatable even if you’ve never been farther south than San Diego.
Verdict: Must-See

#99 Embrace of the Serpent (2015)
Director: Cirro Guerra
Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina
 Wikipedia synopsis:
Embrace of the Serpent:  El abrazo de la serpiente) i2015, directed by Ciro Guerra, and written by Guerra and Jacques Toulemonde Vidal. Shot almost entirely in black and white, the film follows two journeys made thirty years apart by the indigenous shaman Karamakate in the Colombian Amazonian jungle, one with Theo, a German ethnographer, and the other with Evan, an American botanist, both of whom are searching for the rare plant yakruna. It was inspired by the travel diaries of Theodor Koch-Grunberg and Richard Evans Schultes, and dedicated to lost Amazonian cultures.
Embrace of the Serpent is a visually compelling film. Filmed mostly in black and white, it details the material and spiritual journey of two explorers and a shaman named Karakamate. The slow deliberate pace of the film works to good effect. The men are making their journey via canoe down the Amazon, and their struggle is punctuated by tense encounters of distinctly different cultures along the way.
In the context of the film, white men are seen as harbingers of doom and destruction. Some of the most unsettling scenes portray the violent confrontations between the invasive white culture and the indigenous population, where all manner of brutality, exploitation and religious zealotry have forever changed the physical and social landscape. Karakamate for the most part remains silent and cautious, having lost his people due to this kind of encounter. Begrudgingly, he has taken on the responsibility of caring for and educating the foreigner(s) he has come into contact with.
This is not a new story by any means. It is a retelling of the discoveries of the 19th century, where the modern world infiltrated the most remote regions of the globe, and in doing so, usually wreaked havoc as opposed to returning to the outside world with wisdom. But this is where the movie picks up the thread. Both of the men featured in the film wind up in a spiritual quest that forces them to abandoned their material possessions and scientific understanding of the world around them. This too is an old narrative, a vital one to be sure.
There is much we have discovered, and much we have forgotten. What we might perceive as a progress, might in some way be a re-awakening or a re-framing of an ancient understanding, where we are just now getting attuned to its subtle translations.

THE TRIBES HAVE BARELY SPOKEN - My Review of BIRDS OF PASSAGE (3 Stars)
Tumblr media
One of the great things cinema has afforded us is the chance to immerse ourselves in cultures we’d never have a chance to experience otherwise.  In 2015, the team of Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra brought us the Oscar nominated EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, which detailed the destruction of the Amazon from the perspective of its indigenous peoples.  Visually sumptuous and completely immersive, the film left  me with high expectations for their follow-up.  In many ways, BIRDS OF PASSAGE, a drug gangster saga spanning from 1968-1980, does not disappoint, despite a central flaw.
Set amongst the Wayuu tribes of Northern Columbia, the film slowly, oh so slowly, shows how the marijuana trade corrupts and destroys a family.  At first, the filmmakers, with a screenplay co-written by Maria Camila Arias and Jacques Toulemond Vidal, bring us a taste of the Way customs with an opening scene depicting Zaida (Natalia Reyes) emerging from a year of seclusion to show herself off as a woman to the community.  She does a birdlike dance and soon Rapayet (José Acosta) joins her in the dance to claim her as his future bride.  Shades of THE GODFATHER here and elsewhere appear not coincidental.  The matriarch, a stern, courageous leader named Ursula (Carmiña Martínez), scarcely approves of Rapayet, but entertains the thought because his uncle is a “Word Messenger”, an exalted member of the tribe.  Still, she demands he provide a dowry of livestock and talismans to prove he can provide for his bride.  Strapped for cash, Rapayet heads out with his lifelong friend Moises (the scene stealing Jhon Narváez) to earn money when they happen upon a group of US Peace Corps hippies in need of marijuana.  Rapayet partners with another Way family who traffic in the drug, et voila, they find themselves making more money than they had imagined.  The film, told in five chapters, lurches forward to show us Rapayet has married Zaida and the drug business has boomed.  We’re soon at AMERICAN MADE levels of trade, with better digs and airplanes flying in and out of Columbia with their crop.  Clearly, as history tells us, no good can come from this.  What follows are tribal clashes, lots of bloodshed, betrayals, more money than anyone can handle, and a culture lost to greed.
If any of this sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve seen this story outline play out over decades of    cinema gangster stories.  What gives this film its freshness is the indigenous point of view, the details of their customs, and the stark, hushed style of its filmmakers.  No grandiose “Say hello to my little friend” moments, although Narváez comes the closest with his wild energy, BIRDS OF PASSAGE plays out more like a mournful elegy for a lost culture.  Unfortunately, the non-actors in the cast deliver flat performances, keeping us from caring very deeply about most of the characters.  Acosta clearly has the Michael Corleone role here, but while he stares intensely, he doesn’t show off his conflicted character to its greatest effect.  It’s also strange for me to criticize a film for being too visual, but the spare dialogue leaves us wanting for more context and shadings.
Now don’t get me wrong, this film delivers on its visuals, with EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT’s cinematographer David Gallegos again gorgeously providing one memorable shot after another.  Whether it’s the eye-popping dream sequences or a terrifying scene in which the headlights of a car reveal a road filled with corpses, the film truly treats us to sights most of us will never see on our own.
I just expected something weightier.  To feel more.  Any story which covers an epic amount of like this needs characters with far more layers than what we get here.  I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story, allowing myself to bask in its unrushed style and again, those visuals.  I loved watching an ANIMAL KINGDOM-esque matriarch going all Marlon Brando by making the tough calls, but the one-dimensional nature of its characters kept me at arms length throughout.  Still, the filmmakers have a distinctive, quasi-documentary voice and an interest in showing us unseen parts of the world which keeps me enthusiastic for whatever they tackle next.

Matt writes: It's immensely poignant that in the same year the Marvel Expanded Universe celebrated its tenth anniversary with the release of its twentieth feature, "Ant-Man and the Wasp" (on the heels of "Black Panther" and "Avengers: Infinity War," no less), superhero maestro Stan Lee passed away at age 95. His death brings a new level of meaning to the aching loss that pervades the finale of "Infinity War," though Lee got the last laugh with his hilarious cameo in the "Ant-Man" sequel, which brought down the house at the preview screening I attended. In addition to reading Peter Sobczynski's tribute to Lee, make sure to read Roger Ebert's four-star review of the film that kicked off the MCU: Jon Favreau's "Iron Man." Below is an excerpt of Ebert's analysis (for the full review, click here)...
“The movie is largely founded on its special effects. When somebody isn’t talking, something is banging, clanging or laying rubber. The armored robotic suits utilized by Tony and Obadiah would upstage lesser actors than Downey and Bridges; it's surprising how much those two giant iron men seem to reflect the personalities of the men inside them. Everything they do is preposterous, of course, but they seem to be doing it, not the suits. Some of their moments have real grandeur--as when Tony tests his suit to see how high it will fly, and it finally falls back toward earth in a sequence that reminded me of a similar challenge in ‘The Right Stuff.’ The art direction is inspired by the original Marvel artists. The movie doesn't reproduce the drawings of Jack Kirby and others, but it reproduces their feeling, a vision of out-scale enormity, seamless sleekness, secret laboratories made not of nuts and bolts but of...vistas. A lot of big budget f/x epics seem to abandon their stories with half an hour to go, and just throw effects at the audience. This one has a plot so ingenious it continues to function no matter how loud the impacts, how enormous the explosions.”

BIRDS OF PASSAGE By Cristina Gallego, Ciro Guerra, Maria Camila Arias, Jacques Toulemonde Vidal (& various)
o-o-o-o
BIRDS OF PASSAGE is a crime movie that does not feel like a crime movie. Chronicling a Wayuu family’s rise to power by way of illicit drug & arms dealing prior to their fall from grace and the inevitable disintegration that follows, the film serves as more of a window unto rural Wayuu culture in the seldom seen highlands of Columbia. The crime plot here isn’t the main attractor, but rather a narrative vehicle used to explore the Wayuu way of life, crime involved or not. Special attention is given to the depiction of unique Wayuu marriage ceremonies, burial rituals, the interpretation of dreams, and the passing down of ancestral stories. All this makes the film feel more like an anthropological documentary than your regular run-of-the-mill crime yarn, yet it is the crime yarn that serves to propel the narrative forward in a way anthropological documentaries seldom can.
In that sense, a lot of the film’s DNA seems to stem from Third Cinema, in that a fictional story is being delivered through an all too real, very-documentary-like package. Where it veers from standard Third Cinema is in its motive: It doesn’t exist as a critique of capitalist bosses in favor of the masses, nor as a critique of the colonizer in favor of the colonized. It simply serves to highlight the unique qualities of a culture far removed from where cinema is typically made, and in so doing it highlights the thing that makes us special as a species. Even if we all end up killing each other in the end.
