[ad_1] “I think Frieze is fantastic,” James Corden said. “I went to the one in London before anyone in L.A. even knew what it was.”It was Tuesday in Los Angeles, and Mr. Corden, the former late-night host who now lives in London, was standing inside the Holmby Hills home of Jimmy Iovine, the co-founder of Interscope Records and the former chief executive of Beats Electronics. About 225 people had gathered for an art auction hosted by Mr. Iovine and Dr. Dre and organized by Sotheby’s.The event was part of a week of art talks, exhibitions and dinners culminating in Frieze Los Angeles, a four-day contemporary art fair held at the Santa Monica airport.Frieze began in London in 2003 and has since expanded to New York City, Los Angeles and Seoul. (Last year, Frieze also bought two existing art fairs, Expo Chicago and the Armory Show in Manhattan.)This was the fifth year of Frieze in Los Angeles, and as Mr. Corden noted, the event is picking up momentum on the West Coast. Simon Fox, the chief executive of Frieze, estimates the festivities have doubled in size from last year. “I think we counted over 150 different events happening in the city around the fair,” he said. “The city is exploding.”This year’s Frieze Week, as it’s unofficially known, coincides with an exciting moment for the burgeoning Los Angeles art scene, which has been shored up in the past year with new galleries and freshly relocated artists.Frieze Week is serving as a coming-out party, a centralized hub for all the artists and galleries to come together and celebrate.The event that Mr. Corden attended took place in Mr. Iovine’s indoor roller rink, in a converted garage. On the wall were mural-style portraits of his friends, including Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg and Bono.“We have roller-skating parties here,” Mr. Iovine said of the space. Usher, who showed off his skills in last month’s Super Bowl halftime show, is a regular: “He has skated here a hundred times.” Every table was well supplied with Dr. Dre’s gin-and-juice canned cocktails.The goal was to raise money for the hosts’ nonprofit organization, the Iovine and Young Center, which reimagines public high school curriculums to teach students art and design, business, technology, and engineering and computer science skills. Sotheby’s organized a sale of 11 contemporary works by artists including Reggie Burrows Hodges, Ann Craven and Ed Ruscha that the auction house said raised $2.5 million.Benny Blanco had his eye on a 15-inch-by-11-inch Noah Davis. “I know it’s small, but that’s me,” said Mr. Blanco, a record producer. “I’m 5-5 on a good day.”Katie Couric said that while she was there for the art — “I am one of those people who actually enjoys looking at it” — she was also there for a good time. “Frieze is a really fun excuse to see a lot of great people and party,” she said, laughing. “I am trying to get invited to as many things as possible. The trove of data allegedly stolen from the New York-based firm by hackers — a total of 756 gigabytes — includes contracts, nondisclosure agreements, phone numbers and email addresses, and “personal correspondence,” according to an image of the hackers’ post provided to Variety by Emsisoft, a cybersecurity software and consulting company specializing in ransomware.
The documents purportedly include information about multiple music and entertainment figures, including: Lady Gaga, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige, Ella Mai, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Cam Newton, Bette Midler, Jessica Simpson, Priyanka Chopra, Idina Menzel, HBO’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” and Run DMC. Facebook also is on the hackers’ hit list.

In the type of ransomware attack evidently carried out against the legal firm, cybercriminals use the threat of releasing the stolen data as leverage to extort payment.
Variety was unable to verify the authenticity of the allegedly stolen documents. According to Emsisoft, the hackers posted evidence of the data theft via a forum on the dark web, which lets users engage in secret transactions and hide their identities using encryption. It isn’t known how much the hacker group responsible for the attack may be demanding from the law firm in exchange for not releasing the material publicly and/or on the dark web.
One of the documents released by the hacker group was an excerpt from a contract for Madonna’s 2019-20 “Madame X” tour with Live Nation.
The info the hackers has released so far “is simply a warning shot,” Emsisoft threat analyst Brett Callow told Variety. “It’s the equivalent of a kidnapper sending a pinky finger.” The implicit threat is that if the firm doesn’t pay the cybercriminals, the group will publish whatever other data they managed to steal, probably in installments, he added.
The ransomware attack on Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks was perpetrated by a group called “REvil,” also known as “Sodinokibi,” which has previously targeted Travelex, Brooks International and other organizations, according to Callow. Travelex, the U.K.-based currency-exchange company, paid $2.3 million in bitcoin to hackers that had infected its network with viruses, the Wall Street Journal reported last month.
Clients of New York-based Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks span music artists, actors and TV personalities, sports stars, and media and entertainment companies.
On the music front, according to the firm’s previously published list of clients, those include: AC/DC, Avicii, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Bebe Rexha, Bette Midler, Bruce Springsteen, the David Bowie Estate, Drake, Elton John, Fiona Apple, Future, Jessie Reyez, John Mellencamp, Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Lil Wayne, Lionel Richie, Lizzo, Madonna, Maroon 5, Nas, OK Go, Ricky Martin, Rod Stewart, Shania Twain, Sting, The Weeknd, Timbaland, Tony Bennett, U2, Usher and the Whitney Houston Estate.
Other talent and execs repped by Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks include Andrew Lloyd Webber, Barbara Walters, Clive Davis, David Geffen, David Letterman, Diane Sawyer, Gayle King, Iman, Irving Azoff, Jimmy Iovine, Kate Upton, Maria Shriver, Mariska Hargitay, Martha Stewart, Meg Ryan, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Nancy Grace, Naomi Campbell, Priyanka Chopra, Richard Plepler, Robert De Niro, Shay Mitchell, Sofia Vergara, Spike Lee, and the Osbournes (Ozzy, Sharon and Kelly).

Meet Jessica Iovine – Music Producer Jimmy Iovine With Ex-Wife Vicki Iovine
The Interscope co-founder, Jimmy Iovine exchanged his wedding vows with his former wife Vicki Iovine. During their years of togetherness, the pair welcomed four children. Jimmy Iovine daughter Jessica Iovine took birth on December 13, 1989. Besides, Jessica is one of four children of Jimmy born to his wife, Jessica. Unfortunately, Jessica’s parents are no longer together. The former couple tied their wedding knot in 1985. Before divorcing in 2009, the pair were in a marital relationship for 24 years. À première vue difficile de paraître plus modeste que James ‘Jimmy’ Iovine (« eye-oh-veen »). Petit, binoclard, chauve... difficile croire que sans lui c’est un tout un pan du rap mainstream qui n’aurait jamais vu le jour, de Death Row à Aftermath, en passant par Eminem et 50 Cent.
Pourtant, un peu à l’image de Keyser Söze dans Usual Suspects, cette apparente modestie constitue peut-être son principal atout, lui qui a toujours su se faire discret pour avancer ses pions.
Retour sur un destin riche en enseignements pour quiconque souhaite déjouer les plans d’une vie toute tracée.
Too cool for school

Né en 1953 d’une mère secrétaire et d’un père docker tous deux d’origine italienne, Jimmy Iovine grandit à Brooklyn, New York les pieds dans la classe ouvrière, à mille lieux du strass et des paillettes du show business.
Conformément aux usages, son père, qui lui répète à longueur de journée de se couper les cheveux, ambitionne pour lui une carrière dans le même champ d'activité que le sien, un échelon hiérarchique au-dessus.
Ce sera donc contrôleur sur les docks, un point c’est tout.
« Pour mon père s’eut été une consécration que je porte un pantalon de ville au travail, cela aurait voulu dire que je ne passais pas mes journées à soulever des caisses. »
Sauf que bon, non content de « détester chaque minute passé sur les bancs de l’école », l’ami Jimmy qui en pince plus que de raison pour les Doors ou Sly & the Family Stone a clairement d’autres ambitions en tête.
« Jeune, j’étais tout sauf un mec cool, mais je voulais être là où le cool était. Et la musique, ça c’était cool. »
Bien décidé à poursuivre son rêve, quand bien même sa seule expérience dans le milieu se limite à avoir tâté de la basse avec ses potes, à force de persévérance il finit par décrocher un tout premier job dans un studio d’enregistrement... en tant qu’agent d’entretien.
Pas de plus doués pour passer le balai, il se fait licencier à deux reprises.
« Je n’avais aucune idée de ce que je faisais, j’enchaînais les erreurs. »
Réembauché dans un troisième studio, le mythique Record Plant de Manhattan où Jimi Hendrix et le Velvet Underground ont traîné leurs guêtres, il décide cette fois-ci de tirer parti de la situation en changeant son état d’esprit du tout au tout.
« Je me suis mis à faire tout ce qu’il fallait faire pour franchir un palier. Qu’il faille nettoyer le sol, rester un peu plus tard, réajuster un micro... je le faisais. L’idée c’était de trouver un moyen d’être dans la même pièce que des gens plus expérimentés que moi, de m’imprégner de leur savoir. »
Bien lui en a pris puisqu’il se fait repérer par un certain Roy Cicala, un producteur de renom (Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, The Who...), qui lui donne sa chance comme ingénieur du son.
Nous sommes en 1972, Jimmy Iovine a 19 ans et sa carrière dans le monde de la musique débute pour de bon.
Et tant pis pour ses études et les rêves de son père.

Reste que s’il a enfin glissé un pied dans la porte, rien n’est encore joué.
« Je n’étais pas du tout sûr de moi. Du coup je me suis persuadé qu’il me fallait travailler plus dur que les autres pour me rendre utile. J’essayais de multiplier les initiatives : anticiper si un quelqu’un voulait une tasse de thé, anticiper s’il fallait rembobiner une cassette, anticiper s’il fallait préparer des vocaux... »
Iovine a cependant dans ces premières années la chance de collaborer avec trois monstres sacrés de la musique moderne que sont John Lennon, Patti Smith et Bruce Springsteen.
« Ce fut comme passer mon diplôme universitaire. Je côtoyais enfin les meilleurs. J’étais à leur service, et en retour j’en apprenais un maximum. »
C’est d’ailleurs lors d’une session aux côtés du Boss pour son album Darkness on the Edge of Town sorti en 1978 qu’il comprend une bonne fois pour toute qu’il doit se mettre au service du « tableau global ».
En charge d’enregistrer les parties batterie, il se frotte au perfectionnisme de la star qui réclame un son similaire au studio dans lequel il était précédemment, ce à quoi Iovine lui rétorque que ce n’est pas possible... avant de faire interrompre par l’un de ses musiciens qui prétend connaitre un autre ingé son plus compétent que lui.
Vexé, Iovine s’en va remettre sa démission auprès de Jon Landau, le producteur de Springsteen.
Ce dernier lui rétorque alors la chose suivante : « Écoute, je vais t’apprendre un truc maintenant que tu es à la croisée des chemins. Tu ne vas pas te barrer parce que ta fierté en a pris un coup, ce n’est comme ça que ça marche. Tout ça n’a rien à voir avec toi. Il s’agit de Bruce et de son album, il s’agit de faire le meilleur album possible. Tu vas donc retourner le voir de ce pas et lui dire que tu le soutiens quoi qu’il arrive. »
Le conseil fait immédiatement tilt dans la tête du rookie qui s’exécute dans la foulée.
Aujourd’hui encore Iovine aime d’ailleurs à revenir sur cette leçon de vie : « Quand vous prenez ce recul, vous réalisez que tout ne tourne pas autour de votre petite personne. Quand vous avez la chance d’être en présence de personnes de talents, il faut savoir rester à votre place. Ce sont eux les génies, c’est à vous de leur faciliter la tâche. »
« Et ce n’est pas être modeste que de dire ça, cela n’a rien à voir, c’est juste ne pas se raconter des histoires. Si votre égo vous empêche de faire ça, vous ne progresserez jamais d’un centimètre. »
Du rock au rap

Crédité brièvement une toute première fois en tant que producteur en 1977 sur l’album Bat Out of Hell du « rockeur wagnérien » Meat Loaf (plus de 40 millions d’exemplaire vendus), Jimmly Iovine décroche son premier tube l’année suivante avec Because the Night de Patti Smith, une chanson à la base destinée à Springsteen.
« Bruce et moi étions désormais sur la même longueur d’onde. Il comprenait bien qu’en tant que producteur débutant j’avais besoin de me faire les dents et que Patti méritait un hit. »
À partir de là les collaborations s’enchaînent sans discontinuer avec les plus grands noms de la scène rock des années 80 : Tom Petty, Dire Straits, Rod Stewart, U2, les Pretenders ou encore celle qui deviendra sa femme, Stevie Nicks.
Reconnu comme l’une des meilleures oreilles de la profession, petit à petit Iovine se lasse néanmoins de cette vie-là. D’une part parce qu’elle n’est guère compatible avec sa paternité nouvelle, et de l’autre parce que le moment semble venu de se reconvertir.
« À 38 ans je ressentais plus ce que je ressentais dans ma vingtaine. Je me suis dit que tôt ou tard les jeunes ne voudraient plus travailler avec moi comme producteur. En revanche si j’avais mon propre label, je pourrais travailler avec des producteurs qui eux travaillent avec des jeunes ! »
Ça et puis aussi le fait qu’après avoir vu son ami Dadid Geffen monter sa structure quelques années plus tôt, il s’est tout simplement dit qu’il pouvait se faire « plus d’argent » en investissant ce créneau, qu’importe si à cet instant T il n’y connaît absolument rien en matière de finances ou de budgets.
Associé avec Ted Field, un producteur de cinéma pilote automobile à ses heures perdues (il a participé à quatre reprises aux 24 Heures du Mans), sous l’égide de la Warner qui s’octroie 50% des parts, il lance en 1989 Interscope Records.
Le mot d’ordre ? Laisser les pleins pouvoirs aux artistes tout en leur garantissant qu’ils n’aient à se soucier de rien d’autre que de créer – « To make sure everything is going cool » dans le texte.
« Je n’ai jamais autorisé le moindre cadre de maison de disques à assister aux sessions d’enregistrement. Jamais. Vous savez pourquoi ? Parce que les artistes sont des êtres vulnérables. Qu’importe la réaction de la maison de disques ou l’absence de réaction, cela joue sur leurs émotions. »
Bon attention, cette autonomie n’est pas à confondre avec une liberté totale, nombreux sont les artistes qui au fil du temps critiqueront plus ou moins ouvertement l’autoritarisme dont Iovine fait parfois preuve, de Bono des U2 (« Disons qu’il n’est pas toujours des plus nuancés quand il veut quelque chose »), aux Roots qui lui ont reproché l’échec de leur album The Tippping Point en 2002, en passant par Gwen Stefani qui le surnommait carrément 'Jimmy Jail' (« Avec lui ce n’est jamais terminé, c’est toujours ‘une chanson de plus’. C’est intimidant, même si c’est pour tirer le meilleur de vous »).
Malheureusement pour les deux lascars, les débuts sont plutôt laborieux question chiffres, au point que la maison mère leur fait gentiment comprendre qu’elle ne va pas tarder à leur couper les vivres.
La légende raconte alors qu’un jour où l’un de ses neveux écoutaient fiévreusement du rap, Iovine réalise d’un coup d’un seul tout le pouvoir de cette culture sur les adolescents des classes blanches moyennes et aisées.
Très vite il signe ainsi 2Pac avant de rencontrer l’homme qui va l’aider à changer l’histoire de la musique : Andre Romelle Young alias Dr. Dre.
Le gangsta rap, le vrai

« Quand j’ai entendu pour la première fois Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang, cela m’a fait le même effet que la première fois que j’ai entendu Satisfaction des Rolling Stones » déclare celui qui plus tard popularisera sa fameuse théorie des cinq secondes – « Si une chanson ne t’accroche dans les cinq premières secondes, elle ne t’accrochera pas du tout ».
« J’ai ensuite rencontré Dre. Direct je lui ai dit ‘Écoute, je ne connais rien au rap, mais je connais mon métier. Qui s’est occupé de l’enregistrement ?’ Là non seulement il m’a répondu que c’était lui, mais il m’a également expliqué les conditions dans lesquelles il a travaillé. Entre les perquisitions, les embrouilles et le manque d’argent, c’était comme s’il avait fait ça en chutant du toit d’un immeuble. J’étais soufflé. »
Mieux, les deux hommes vont vite se rendre compte qu’ils partagent des intérêts communs.
En guerre ouverte avec son ancien employeur Ruthless Records qui menace ouvertement quiconque s’associerait à lui de poursuites judiciaires, l’ex N.W.A. connaît toutes les peines du monde à trouver un distributeur pour Death Row, le jeune label qu’il vient de créer avec Marion ‘Suge’ Knight.
À la décharge des Sony et BMG qui leur ont claque la porte au nez, il faut dire qu’en sus de cet imbroglio juridique sans nom (Knight a tendu un guet-apens à Eazy-E pour le forcer à libérer Dre de toutes obligations contractuelles), leur plan de financement n’inspire pas spécialement confiance, les fonds provenant essentiellement de l’argent de la drogue.
Loin d’avoir ce genre de pudeur, Iovine pour qui seule la musique compte propose d’aplanir la situation sur le plan légal en faisant appel aux avocats de la Warner en échange de la possibilité pour Interscope de promouvoir et distribuer les sorties du Couloir de la Mort.
Pas fou, Knight qui a bien compris l’état du rapport de force accepte le deal non sans poser une condition non négociable : obtenir l'entière propriété des masters.
« Le truc c’est qu’Interscope était au bord de la faillite avant qu’ils me rencontrent. Ils voulaient mes artistes, moi je voulais mes masters. On n'allait pas se taper tout le taf pendant qu’ils comptaient les billets. Ça c’est de l’esclavage moderne. »
Tandis que dans un premier temps tout va pour le mieux (The Chronic est certifié triple platine, Doggystyle quadruple, la bande originale Above the Rim double...), l’obscénité des textes conjuguée au climat de violence permanent (genre le procès pour homicide attenté à Snoop Doggy Dogg) gênent de plus en plus la Warner, au point de sommer Interscope de se séparer sans délai de Death Row.
Face au refus de Field et Iovine, la major décide en 1995 de leur revendre ses parts à hauteur de 115 millions de dollars.
Résultat, cette même année, malgré la domination sans pareil de Death Row dans les charts, les Dogg Pound doivent se résoudre à sortir leur album Dogg Food en indépendant...
Iovine lui n’en a cure, d’autant qu’il réalise l’année d’après une très jolie plus-value en revendant les 50% de la Warner à MCA (futur Universal Music Group) pour 200 millions de dollars.
En revanche, nulle question pour lui de quitter le navire.
« Je n’ai pas tout revendu à cause de la musique. Avec Dre j’avais la chance d’avoir un génie à mes côtés. Le hip hop valait la peine qu’on le défende. »

Reste qu’en 1997, Jimmy Iovine finit quand même par prendre la tangente.
Outre la mort de 2Pac, la condamnation à neuf ans de prison de Suge Knight et le fait qu’il doive désormais porter un gilet pare-balles lorsqu’il se rend à des avant-premières de films (!), c’est surtout le départ de Dre l’année précédente qui le pousse à ne pas renouveler son contrat de distribution avec Interscope.
Déterminé à continuer de creuser son sillon dans le rap, Iovine lui offre sa propre structure assortie d’un contrôle artistique total sur ses futurs projets, Aftermath.
Pas de chance, l’aventure manque de se terminer aussi rapidement qu’elle a commencé quand les deux premiers projets du label flopent (Dr. Dre Presents the Aftermath, une compilation introduisant au monde sa nouvelle clique de protégés, puis l’album de The Firm un super groupe composé de Nas, Az, Foxy Brown et Nature).
Pressé d’arrêter les frais par Interscope, Iovine continue pourtant de voir en Dr. Dre « un nouveau Phil Spector » (un producteur de rock légendaire des années 60 Ndlr), quitte selon le storytelling officiel à mettre sa démission dans la balance s’il ne lui est pas laissé une seconde chance.
Joie de l’alignement des planètes, à cette même période Iovine qui a oublié de chopper le melon malgré le succès prend le temps d’écouter une démo qu’un jeune stagiaire de 19 ans fraîchement engagé lui a vivement recommandé.
Cette démo c’est celle du Sim Shady EP d’Eminem.
« J’ai trouvé ça particulièrement intelligent. C’est clair qu’il racontait des folies, mais je me suis dit que ça valait la peine d’en faire part à Dre. »
La suite on la connaît, avec peut être le run le plus impressionnant jamais observé dans l’histoire du rap : le doublé Sim Shady LP/2001 en 1999, les disques de diamant de The Marshall Mathers LP et The Eminem Show en 2000 et 2002, la mise en orbite de 50 Cent en 2003 avec Get Rich or Die Tryin’, The Documentary de The Game en 2005 et quantités de disques satellites tous allègrement certifiés platine (Devil's Night des D12, Beg for Mercy du G-Unit, The Hunger for More de Lloyd Banks...).
Oh, et bien sûr tout cela sans oublier les cartons des artistes pop/rock maisons que sont No Doubt, Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson ou encore Nine Inch Nails !
Candidat au début du siècle au titre d’homme le plus puissant de la musique mondiale (et accessoirement personnage public depuis son caméo dans Family Guy en 2005), Jimmy Iovine se fait néanmoins du souci.
Certes financièrement tout va pour le mieux pour lui, et ce plus encore depuis la fusion d’Interscope avec Polygram en 1999, mais l’évolution de la technologie le préoccupe.
« Je me rappelle qu’à l’occasion d’une conversation avec un cadre dirigeant d’une maison de disques à propos de la piraterie en ligne et l’avènement du site Napster nous en avions conclu qu’aucune industrie ne durait éternellement. »
« Fuck sneakers, let’s make speakers »

De moins en moins intéressé par la production et la vie de bureau, en 2006 Jimmy Iovine est frappé d’une illumination lorsque Dr. Dre s’entretient avec lui de la proposition qui lui a été faite d’apposer son nom sur une ligne de baskets.
« Là j’ai dit à Dre qu’absolument personne ne s’est jamais intéressé à la manière dont il s’habille et qu’il devrait plutôt faire des écouteurs. Il m’a alors demandé si nous pouvions le faire, ce à quoi je lui ai répondu ‘Fuck yeah !’ »
C’est ainsi qu’au prétexte de combattre la chute de la qualité audio de la musique, Iovine conceptualise toute une stratégie marketing axé sur une visibilité maximum du produit.
« J’ai demandé à notre designer de grossir le B sur le côté. Le truc c’est que nous voulions concurrencer les autres marques de casques, mais aussi Nike. Et dans cette course nous avions un avantage : quand une personne marche dans la rue un casque sur les oreilles, le casque se voit. Je voulais donc que l’on voit le B de loin. »
Et le « B » le public va très vite le voir partout, à coup de placements de produits tout sauf subtils auprès des célébrités les plus cools du moment (chanteurs, footballeurs, basketteurs...), Dre ne servant au final que de caution pour ce qui est de la crédibilité technique.
Face à un tel rouleau compresseur les résultats se font spectaculaires, Beats pouvant se targuer en 2014 de s’être accaparé plus d’un quart du marché des casques audio tandis qu’en 2015 la société est carrément rachetée par Apple pour 3,2 milliards de dollars !
[Intronisé comme Dre exécutif chez Apple afin de développer la branche Apple Music, Iovine quitte alors ses fonctions au sein d’Interscope.]
Pas mal pour des casque vendus 300 dollars qui n’en coûtent en réalité que 14 à leur sortie d’usine, qui sont alourdis artificiellement pour paraître plus chers et qui au final se révèlent de faible qualité pour peu que vous écoutiez autre chose que des prod’ Aftermath – lire le détail ici.
Si Jimmy Iovine coule depuis de jours heureux, entre son remariage en 2014 avec l’ancien mannequin Liberty Ross (25 ans de moins que lui) et la gestion de son école (la USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation qui accueille depuis 2014 une trentaine d'élèves), ne croyez pas qu’il passe ses journées à ressasser son glorieux parcours.
Ou pour citer le réalisateur Allen Hughes qui en 2017 lui a consacré le documentaire The Defiant Ones : « Avec Dr. Dre jamais ils ne regardent jamais en arrière. Jamais ils ne parlent de leurs accomplissement, jamais ils ne se montrent nostalgiques, jamais ils ne se penchent dans le rétroviseur. Ils continuent d’avancer encore et toujours. »
Serait-il donc possible qu’à 67 ans Jimmy Iovine n’ait pas dit son dernier mot ?

Gli investimenti di aprile hanno coinvolto startup e organizzazioni eSports. E Riot Games ha acquisito Hypixel Studios, creatore di un celebre server di Minecraft.
L’epidemia di coronavirus ha rallentato gli investimenti negli eSports. La cifra, almeno per quelle trattative i cui dettagli sono stati resi pubblici, lo scorso mese ha comunque raggiunto 712,1 milioni di dollari raccolti dagli investimenti, secondo i dati raccolti da The Esports Observer. La parte del leone l’ha fatta Tencent, che ha investito centinaia di milioni di dollari per aumentare il proprio potere di voto in Huya, piattaforma di streaming cinese. In generale il 93% degli investimenti di aprile (circa 662 milioni di dollari) coinvolgono società cinesi quotate in borsa.

Riot Games ha acquisito Hypixel Studios, creatore di un popolare server su Minecraft che include diversi minigiochi.
CINA – Tencent, dicevamo, ha investito circa 262 milioni di dollari per diventare il maggiore azionista di Huya, con una quota del 50,9%, acquisendo ulteriori 16,5 milioni di azioni oltre a quelle che erano già in suo possesso. Il valore delle azioni è stato decretato dal prezzo medio nei 20 giorni di mercato precedenti all’acquisto, che risale all’inizio di aprile. In questo modo Tencent ha consolidato una presenza finanziaria già molto forte nelle piattaforme di streaming cinesi: è il maggiore azionista anche di DouYu e di Bilibili, i principali concorrenti di Huya. ACQUISIZIONI – Lo scorso mese ha destato interesse anche l’acquisizione di Hypixel Studios da parte di Riot Games, produttore di League of Legends e Valorant. Non sono stati divulgati i dettagli economici della trattativa ma Hypixel Studios è noto per aver creato un server di Minecraft (Hypixel Network) nel 2013, che oggi è popolato da circa 18 milioni di utenti unici, dove sono disponibili vari minigiochi. Ad aprile Torque Esports ha acquisito WTF1, testata britannica specializzata nelle corse, mentre la danese SteelSeries ha comprato A-Volute, l’azienda francese che ha sviluppato il software audio Nahimic.

Il produttore discografico James Iovine ha guidato un turno di investimento in FaZe Clan.
STARTUP – FaZe Clan, che a marzo aveva raccolto oltre 22 milioni di dollari con un prestito convertibile, ha accumulato ulteriori 40 milioni. Tra gli investitori c’è il produttore discografico James Iovine. Diverse startup infine hanno accumulato cifre più modeste. Guilded, una piattaforma di chat, ha raccolto 7 milioni di dollari in un turno guidato da Matrix Partners. L’obiettivo è assumere nuovo personale e formare collaborazioni con gli sviluppatori e gli editori di videogiochi. Un milione di dollari, invece, è andato all’agenzia di eSports META. Il marchio di abbigliamento esportivo Raven infine si è assicurato un investimento di 1,4 milioni di dollari da parte di fonti privati statunitensi: ora vuole espandersi in Europa e in Nord America.

As part of this “groundbreaking coalition,” NTWRK has secured the global direct-to-consumer product rights for FaZe Clan. NTWRK will now immediately integrate the professional esports and entertainment organization highly coveted apparel and merchandise into its platform. According to a press release, this will “establishing an unprecedented pipeline of creative commerce.
Speaking on the new partnership, Jimmy Iovine added:
“We’re at the birth of a new disruptive entertainment genre. FaZe Clan is a very powerful pipeline into gaming culture, and their cultural impact reminds me of the early days of 90s hip hop. The combined reach of FaZe Clan and NTWRK is going to be very powerful.”
FaZe Clan CEO Lee Trink praised Iovine and his ability the next big thing adding:
Jimmy has always been a cultural see. His belief in FaZe Clan as the next cultural wave, not just in gaming but in entertainment overall, is an incredible representation of the transformative shift happening right now.” 
NTWRK CEO Aaron Levant stated:
“By investing in FaZe Clan, we’re putting NTWRK at the epicenter of gaming culture, further cementing our position as Gen Z’s premiere social commerce and content platform.”
FaZe Clan President Greg Selkoe closed things out with:
“NTWRK will without a doubt, provide additional rocket fuel for FaZe to continue extending our brand and cultural influence worldwide. We are excited to be aligned with passionate, like-minded partners that will further contribute to our impact on entertainment and youth culture.”
NTWRK is known for its limited-edition product drops from big names like LeBron James, 88rising, and Billie Eilish. FaZe Clan is the latest marquee name to join its ever-growing roster.

NTWRK moves into live events
NTWRK, is a fascinating experiment in live video shopping for the iPhone set. It’s been described as a blend of QVC and Twitter and Twitch and they just got a new slice of money from investors like Drake and Live Nation to expand into physical events.
There’s been a bunch of attempts at this kind of hybrid event shopping experience, but none of them have quite hit a home run yet. NTWRK was a pretty compelling experience even at launch last year. The core experience is a live show presented only in NTWRK’s app, where guests can talk about products which become available in the app as the show airs.
There was a built in opportunity to offer limited availability streetwear and sneakers, and an audience that founder Aaron Levant knew very well from his time running ComplexCon and Agenda, two big streetwear and marketing shows.
One of the first shows starred Ben Baller and Jeff Staple, and featured a drop of a new colorway of Staple’s iconic Pigeon Dunk from Nike . I tuned in and found the experience to be compelling in its own way. The live show provided context for the product and the interface let you purchase in a couple taps of a button (the shoes sold out immediately and the app inevitably crashed from the rush of hype beasts). The stream and app have gotten more stable since then.
Since the launch, NTWRK has experimented with various product areas and promotions. The latest funding is enabling expansion back into physical events and some new angles on the NTWRK model.
After getting kicked out of high school in 10th grade, Levant went on to work in graphic design, sales and marketing for an LA streetwear brand. That led to trade show attending and eventually to Levant founding his own show, Agenda in 2003. Agenda got bigger over the next 10 years, becoming one of the biggest action sports, streetwear and lifestyle tradeshows in the world. He sold a majority of Agenda to ReeedPOP, which owns Comic Con and stayed on in a development role. Eventually, he developed other shows including ComplexCon, a smash hit culture and sneaker show in partnership with Complex.
Last year, Levant left to found NTWRK.
“That transition really happened through a conversation that I had with Jimmy Iovine in September of 2017,” Levant told me in an interview last year. “I got introduced to him by a friend. He expressed his interest in a new company for him and his son, and we had similar interests and ideas around that. That night that I met him, I went home, stayed up all night to 4:00 in the morning and wrote the entire business plan for NTWRK.”
Iovine ended up as an investor via the MSA Enterprises vehicle, along with Warner Bros. Digital Networks, LeBron James, Maverick Carter and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jimmy’s son Jamie is a co-founder and Head of Fandom at NTWRK.
One of Levant’s big takeaways from his time with ComplexCon and Agenda was that the physical audiences were valuable but a digital audience is built to foster through earned media and user-generated content around these lifestyle events.
“There’s 50,000 people in the room but I think there’s probably a million people online who want to engage with those products and that content,” said Levant. “Maybe I felt a little bit like I was using my skill set and I wasn’t extracting the full value out of it because I wasn’t in the e-com or digital media business in the past. I think that was a key unlock for me, how do I do that better with a phase two of my career?”
The past few months have seen a series of high profile launches and collaborations with sneaker and streetwear people. And now, the Live Nation and Drake tie up will lead to artist-driven collections sold on NTWRK’s app, unique ticket access, promo bundles developed by NTWKR and, yes, a new live event called NTWRK Presents that will launch in Q4.
In recent months, Drake sold some of his tour merch exclusively on NTWRK.
They’ve also been running auctions for rare resell market items like Supreme guitars and sneakers.
The concept of shopping as entertainment is far from new. There’s a reason that the easy buzzphrase people attach to NTWRK is ‘QVC for millennials’. But there has yet to be a platform that has managed to pin together the right culture with the right delivery mechanism at the right time. NTWRK has a chance to do this I believe because Levant has the taste for it, but also because he’s backing into this from a place of understanding when it comes to culture.
Too many times we see the technology of the platform take center stage — a clever delivery mechanism or good design. But, fundamentally, most tech companies are absolutely crap at culture. They’re too homogenic — they do not allow for and encourage the influence of the spaces that they’re catering to.
Black Twitter made Twitter. Creators of color made Vine. Asian and Indian users dominate Whatsapp. But when there is an attempt to engage even niche cultures in commerce or monetization the lack of inclusivity and understanding causes them to just screw up over and over.
Having started with live events that existed primarily as a framework for culture to create its own moments, Levant and NTWRK are in a better position to figure this out. If you’ve ever been to an Agenda or ComplexCon you know what I mean. There’s this pungent melange of culture, music, money, rare goods and ephemeral moment creation happening. The challenge is to make that work in a digital context, of course, and then to sort of ‘re-export’ that back into event formats.
“I think that, as I’ve said countless times, physical events have a huge organic digital ripple, but we needed the digital platform to already be established and scalable before we implemented the physical events, to have an effect on the larger digital platform,” Levant says about moving NTWRK into an IRL context. “In my previous roles, I spent 15 years really focusing on the physical experiential events and towards the end of my career doing that I came to the realization I was doing it backwards.”
I don’t necessarily think that this model’s going to work for everybody. I think Levant and co have a unique skill of bringing people together and I think the celebrity thing is a strong overall angle – right down to the investors.
“Obviously Drake is an icon that has massive influence over all of pop culture and I think there are few people in that category of him that can capture consumer’s imagination,” says Levant. “I couldn’t think of someone better than him to be involved with our company.”
There are other angles too, though, that still have the same thing at the core. NTWRK is creating this engaged audience and theyr’e giving them value and then offering them a very on-the-face, honest transaction: “Look, here’s this thing. If you buy it, we benefit. Thanks, peace.”
That kind of interaction model is foreign to media because of this idea that advertising is the only gain and the only way to build that monetary relationship. I think people are going to start to get wise to that but they still are very resistant.
“We were out there, talking to every brand and every agency in the world and it’s really interesting to watch who gets it and who’s totally confused,” said Levant when we spoke about the launch. “It’s really fun to have these conversations because people are just like, ‘Wait, what are you doing?’
They have a really hard time grasping it and they don’t know who we should talk to. Should we be talking to the media buying team? Should we be talking to the wholesale team? Should we talk to the PR team? I’m like, ‘No, we’re talking to everybody.””
“Companies tend to divide their business up into these silos, these business units and these internal categories and they usually don’t collaborate and play well together and when you get these big, global organizations, their head’s spinning because they don’t know who we should talk to because no one’s done this one-to-one yet.”
Right now as I write this I’m watching Bobby Hundreds talk live about his memoir This is Not A T-Shirt — while selling a bundle that includes the book and, yes, a t-shirt. Hundreds (Bobby Kim), built a streetwear brand when it was definitely not a thing to build a streetwear brand.
The bundle runs $50. I’m thinking about buying it.
