Not too long ago, a friend of mine reminded me of the wonderful Episode 74, where Jean Paul very melodramatically struggles to resist the temptations of the Mark of Death. Looking through my massive screencap collection, I found numerous freeze-frames of my favorite headache faces of his from the scene, which I decided to animate tonight into two (admittedly dodgy) GIFs.

And the 80's movies week enters its third round.

Today with the Dudes of Wrath. For those Kiss fans still unfamiliar with the Dudes of Wrath, let me tell you that they were an all-star band, or rather a buddy project between Paul Stanley, Desmond Child and Jean Beauvoir, who were joined by a few other not unillustrious names within the hard rock scene to record the theme song for the latest, lively Wes Craven horror film at the time (1).

Which unfortunately flopped, and therefore did not quite live up to expectations as the successor to Freddy Krueger and the A Nightmare on Elm Street series associated with it. And somehow this also applies to its title track, despite hit guarantor Desmond Child. And despite Shocker's undeniable proximity to Alice Cooper's Poison from the latter's mega-seller Trash, on which Desmond famously had nine of his ten fingers in the pie.

Just compare the verses and choruses of both songs without obligation and in a relaxed manner. And perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to also listen to Alice's Spark in the Dark afterwards.

Side Note:

(1) Who would have wanted to miss such an opportunity? Even Vinnie Vincent was once on board one year earlier for The Dream Master soundtrack in '88.

song stuck in my head: keep it down by jack bruce (i bought a friend’s dad one of his solo vinyls for christmas, in addition to some lester young and paul desmond, but it started me back on a kick of listening to him).

amount of sleep: 6 hours. normal for me is 4-5.

dream job: when i finish my doctorate, i’ll be qualified to be a professor, or at least start on that track, and my advisor(s) and program have a great record of getting people into prestigious post-docs and tenure track positions. i may transition to another sector and work in a think tank/banking/foreign policy or diplomacy/etc. we’ll see how sick of academia i am 6 years from now.

wearing: blue jeans i bought from a little shop in soho a few years ago. grey mock neck and black blazer that i got vintage shopping in NYC last winter. lace up black combat-ish boots from Dune.

book/movie that summarizes me: weirdly enough, master and commander by patrick o’brian. not that i especially love that book, it’s definitely not my usual thing to read, but because of the character of queeney. as jack aubrey says of her: 

“’Conic sections and the Pentateuch came as easy as kiss my hand to her. Dear Queeney. I thought she was to be an old maid, though she was so pretty; for how could any man make up to a girl that knows Hebrew? It seemed a sad pity: anyone so sweet-tempered should have a prodigious great family of children. But, however, here she is married to the admiral, so it all ends happy ... yet, you know, he is amazingly ancient — grey-haired, rising sixty, I dare say.’” 

(every bit of that is scarily accurate, down to the hebrew (though mine is modern) and the maths).

aesthetic: i feel like i’m aesthetically a bit of a chameleon, in that my space is decorated in a way which totally reflects my personality and interests while the way i dress is often more conservative and toned down, though it still contains elements of my fundamental style and often depends on the occasion. (for example when i was in london last week a friend kindly took me out to a very expensive jazz club and i wore a vintage black mini dress which had lace sleeves and a lace collar and a plunging lace only back cut-out with chunky tall michael kors velvet heels i bought second hand and black nylons. not at all what i would wear day to day but reflective of how and who i wanted to be in that environment). anyway, my flat is very ‘modern day scholar inhabits 16th century persianite harem.’ all jewel tones, intricate dark wood dividers, miniatures with inscriptions from rumi, patterned textiles, etc. but also loads of books, weird little presents friends have bought me, an egon schiele print, a random fortnum and mason’s basket, a kitchen fully stocked with east asian ingredients, etc.

random fact: my 6th (or 7th, no-one in my family can actually remember) was ancient egypt themed. at my insistence. just imagine a little girl with curly pigtails beaming next to a cake in the shape of tutankhamun’s death mask and you’ve got the idea.

Please Sleaze Me

Reasons why Asylum sounds like classic Kiss. Today: The Sleaze. What could come closer to the concept of sleaze than Uh! All Night? I mean, once apart from C'mon And Love Me, of course, which I'd also like to lean a bit on and emphasize a little, why I think both titles are very similar. Not in the melody in this case, nor any particular stucture, or whatever, it's just the attitude in Paul's voice that just catches my ear. Let's just start with C'mon and Love Me. It's as if Paul, fully immersed in his pose, is projecting himself towards an object of desire in order to give more emphasis to his expressions, and to get as physically close to it as possible with every line. This impression culminates when he lets "C'moon and looooove me" flow completely out of him. Should that female person nevertheless turn him down the image automatically arises in me that Paul would have only little inhibition in approaching another prey directly with identical tactics.

This feeling is the starting point for Uh! All Night, or better it's verses, where this scheme comes across much more vulgar and screaming. And I not necessarily mean the lyrics. The obscenity is again in Paul's attitude, and that is in Uh! All Night turned up to a full 10, and starts where C'mon and Love Me found its climax. Where before I saw Paul sitting next to a woman in a semi-dark club, now he's in full spotlight on a Broadway stage as if he's the great get-laid preacher, pitching himself to dozens or even hundreds of women. What a career! I guess the music video captured this spirit pretty well. You can't get much more over the top than that, and that's exactly what Kiss is. If Creatures of the Night focused more on darker and heavier aspects and represented a high point of the 80s for Kiss, Asylum manages it as well, just on a slightly lighter-hearted and sleazier level.

Listen to C'mon and Love Me's second verse up to the chorus, and then the verse of Uh! All Night. The players both start right there. And don't forget to wash yourself afterwards.
