MAIFELD DERBY 2021 – Mannheim, Maimarktgelände (04.09.2021)

Im Jahr 2019 verkündete ein ausgebrannter Maifeld-Derby-Veranstalter Timo Kumpf die einjährige Festivalpause. Damals war noch nicht einmal klar, ob es mit dem finanziell angeschlagenen Festival dann 2021 weitergehen sollte. Denn die 2019-Ausgabe hatte nicht nur glückliche Besucher:innen, sondern auch 140.000 € Schulden hinterlassen. Dann kam die Pandemie. Ein neues Konzept musste her, unter anderem unterstützt von einer im zweiten Anlauf erfolgreichen Crowdfunding-Kampagne und Förderung durch die Stadt Mannheim, wo das Maifeld seit seiner Gründung auf dem Gelände des Maimarkts und MVV-Reitstadions stattfindet.

Während zahlreiche Festivals in Deutschland auch in diesem Jahr pandemie- oder politikbedingt absagen mussten (je nachdem, wie man das sieht), konnte nun ausgerechnet das Maifeld Derby sein zehnjähriges Jubiläum feiern. Zwar musste das beliebte Indie-Festival den ursprünglichen Termin vom Juni in den September schieben, den Umfang an Bands und Künstler:innen abspecken. Doch vom 3. bis 5. September 2021 hieß es endlich wieder: Bühne frei für das Maifeld Derby. Wir waren am Samstag für euch vor Ort.

Coronakonformes Festival

Selbstverständlich machte sich die Pandemie bemerkbar und das Maifeld hatte bereits lange im Vorfeld eine coronakonforme Veranstaltung angekündigt: 3G, Maskenpflicht, insgesamt weniger Gäste, neues Bühnenkonzept, Sitzplätze – an denen man jedoch bequem stehen und sogar tanzen konnte.

Beim Lineup schlug das Festival primär ruhige Klänge an, was jedoch zum reduzierten Programm passte und die Sitz- bzw. Abstandskonzerte berücksichtigte. Maifeld-Ersties dürften sich dennoch kaum vorstellen können, dass 2018 etwa Bands wie Neurosis oder Wolves In The Throne Room die Bühne rockten. Gleichzeitig untermauerte das Maifeld Derby so seinen exzellenten Ruf als Indie-Pop-Schmelztiegel, von dem sich am Samstag rund 2.000 Besucher:innen bei strahlendem Sonnenschein unterhalten ließen. Fast alle hielten sich an die Regeln und trugen beim Weg zwischen den zwei Bühnen ihre Masken.

Palastbühne und Biergarten D’Amour

Die Palastbühne eröffnen die Indie Rocker Jon Doe aus dem benachbarten Heidelberg und es ist durchaus viel los vor der Bühne – soweit das eben zwischen Stuhlreihen möglich ist. Die Sonne brennt und die Tribüne des in diesem Jahr umfangreicher genutzten Reitstadions empfiehlt sich direkt als gemütliche Chill-Out-Area. Vor und auf der Bühne ist mehr Bewegung drin. Hüften kreisen, Köpfe wackeln und insgesamt freut sich einfach jeder, auf einem Festival zu sein.

Im Biergarten D’Amour wollen auf steinigem Untergrund und Biertischgarnituren nicht wirklich amouröse Gefühle aufkommen, zudem flüchten die ersten Besucher:innen vor der brennenden Sonne in den spärlich vorhandenen Schatten. Singer/Songwriterin Licia beschwört mit klarer Stimme emotionale Balladen an ihrem Keyboard herauf, die sich angesichts der zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch ein wenig tristen Bierbankromatik nicht ganz entfalten können.

Rapper Schmyt hat gute Laune und präsentiert mit seinen elektropoplastigen Tracks einen entspannt-schwofigen Auftritt. Ob es die zahlreichen Effekte auf seiner Stimme braucht, sei dahingestellt, dem Publikum ist es egal und es feiert den spannenden Künstler, der kein Geheimtipp mehr ist. “Wer studiert an der Poppe?”, will Schmyt wissen und verweist auf Mannheims Popakemdie. “Geil, dass ihr so wenig seid” ulkt er, als kaum Hände nach oben gehen.

Singer/Songwriter Plàsi aus Schweden schlägt ruhigere Töne an. “Wie jeder Liedermacher schreibe ich über Liebe und Trennungsschmerz” gibt er zu Protokoll. Aber auch eine persönloche Geschichte zur Syrienkrise hat er zu erzählen. Sein tiefe, klangvolle Stimme entfaltet einen hypnotischen Sog, auf den man sich einlassen muss. Plötzlich fliegen Seifenblasen über den Biergarten D’Amour – ein perfekter Moment.

Auf der Palastbühne steht nun Anika, die mit ihrem Avant-Garde-Pop ein vielversprechender Slot im Lineup war. Die Darbietung umschmeichelt ein Anne Clark Vibe, doch leider ist der Gasang unter dem wummernden Bass kaum zu hören. Das nächste Mal bitte nachts mit viel Nebel auf der Bühne.

Die Dortmunder Punk Band Drens spricht auf der Bühne des Biergarten D’Amour eher Freunde des Gerstenssaftes an und weniger Romantiker. Und das kommt genau zur rechte Zeit, denn das Maifeld braucht ein bisschen Geschwindigkeit. Die Truppe in ihren charakteristischen roten Shorts – gute Merch-Idee – sucht den Kontakt zum Publikum, feuert es an, lädt zum Mitmachen ein. Ihre Songs zwischen The Wombats und Schmutzki gehen gut nach vorne, Hände klatschen im Takt und plötzlich gibt es einige “Biertisch-Circle”. Not macht erfinderisch, Festivallust auch. Zum ersten Mal werden Zugabe-Rufe laut.

Während sich die Sonne langsam vom Tag verabschiedet, beginnen die Dänen von Efterklang mit einem verträumten Set, das sofort das Publikum in seinen Bann zieht. Kaum jemand sitzt auf den Stühlen vor der Bühne, Menschen tanzen mit geschlossenen Augen und einem Lächeln im Gesicht. So muss Festival. Willig lässt sich das Publikum auf die Call and Response Spiele der Band ein, singt im Chor, vereinzelt sprießt Gänsehaut. Efterklang servieren trotz repetetiver Setlist einen headline-würdigen Auftritt. Eine Besucherin sagt: “Ich hatte zum ersten Mal wieder dieses Festival-Gefühl.”

Nun könnte man meinen, dass sicher alle Maifeld Derby Gäste bei Efterklang getanzt haben. Nicht ganz. Indie-Rocker Shelter Boy hat den Biergarten D’Amour ohne großen Aufwand erobert und sorgt für ausnahmslos gute Stimmung.

Den Niederländern Feng Suave gelingt das im Anschluss nicht ganz. Warum klingen eigentlich so viele Bands wie De Staat oder Balthazar, die natürlich alle schon beim Maifeld Derby gespielt haben? Feng Suave sind eine Truppe spielfreudiger Mucker, zu deren basslastigem Rock sich der manchereiner nun gemütlich einen Joint ansteckt. Alle anderen sind beim Headliner Sophie Hunger, die ihrer Rolle absolut gerecht wird. Hier sitzt alles. Tolle Performance, stimmige Lightshow, packende Atmosphäre, Dialog mit dem Publikum, vielseitige Setlist.

Das nächste Maifeld Derby ist bereits für den 10. bis 12. Juni 2022 angekündigt. Drücken wir die Daumen, dass es stattfindet. Drücken wir die Daumen, dass alle Festivals wieder stattfinden können.

Crimson Glory

Crimson Glory, 1979 yılında ABD'de "Pierced Arrow" ismiyle kurulan Amerikan progresif metal müziğinin öncülerinden bir heavy metal grubudur. Özellikle 2009 yılında hayatını kaybeden müzisyen Midnight'ın olduğu dönemler etkili olmuştur. Crimson Glory are an American progressive metal band that formed in 1979 under the name Pierced Arrow (later changed to 'Beowulf'). Their current line-up features long-time guitarists Jon Drenning and Ben Jackson, bassist Jeff Lords, and drummer Dana Burnell. The band formed in Sarasota, Florida. As a pioneer of the American progressive metal movement, Crimson Glory rose to international fame in the 1980s and was ranked as one of the early "flagship bands of progressive metal" along with Queensrÿche, Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Watchtower, who were responsible for creating and developing that genre. Crimson Glory has released four studio albums and one EP. They broke up in 1992, but reunited six years later.

Stuck between a moment in time and a moment of magic. A blue door is in the distance. I’m walking through it, with my intentions, which are not met, because they make no sense. I want to know the door. What is behind it? I see it every morning. But now more than ever. Because the sun is setting behind the buildings. Children. The door is connected to nothing. It is among the trees. Greens and yellows. Aaaaaaaand light brown! So, is it really a door, or just a 2 dimensional object suspended from the sky?      If I stand in one place, without a movement - without moving, my mind is dancing, scribbling, walking, everywhere. CRIMSON GLORY Guitarist JON DRENNING Arrested On Drug Charge

Blabbermouth reports that According to the web site of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, CRIMSON GLORY guitarist Jon Drenning was arrested on April 8 in Sarasota, Florida on charges of conspiracy to purchase cocaine (Schedule II substance) and use of a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony. He was released the following day after posting $10,000 bail on each charge.
