Using oceanography to understand fronts and cyclones on Jupiter

Analysis of NASA satellite images of cyclones on Jupiter reveals that the storms are fueled by processes similar to those acting on Earth

New research led by Lia Siegelman, a physical oceanographer at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, shows that the roiling storms at the planet Jupiter’s polar regions are powered by processes known to physicists studying Earth’s oceans and atmosphere. The geophysical commonalities spanning the 452 million miles between the two planets could even help facilitate an improved understanding of those processes on Earth. 

Siegelman first made the connection between our planet and the gas giant in 2018 when she noticed a striking similarity between images of Jupiter’s huge cyclones and the ocean turbulence she was studying. To a physicist, air and water are both considered fluids so applying ocean physics to Jupiter isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds, said Siegelman. “Jupiter is basically an ocean of gas.” 

This initial observation led Siegelman to co-author a 2022 study published in Nature Physics that analyzed high-resolution infrared images of Jupiter’s cyclones taken by NASA’s Juno spacecraft. The analysis revealed that a type of convection similar to what is seen on Earth helps maintain Jupiter’s storms, which can be thousands of miles wide and last for years.

The 2022 study focused directly on Jupiter’s cyclones, but Siegelman also saw wispy tendrils, known to researchers as filaments, in the spaces between the gassy vortices. These filaments also had earthly analogs, and Siegelman used Juno’s detailed imagery to study whether this similarity to our planet’s oceanic and atmospheric processes was merely skin deep.

Published on June 6 in Nature Physics (LINK TK) and funded by Scripps and the National Science Foundation, Siegelman’s follow-up study finds additional similarities between the processes fueling Jupiter’s cyclones and those acting on Earth. The study shows that the filaments between Jupiter’s cyclones act in concert with convection to promote and sustain the planet’s giant storms. Specifically, Jupiter’s filaments act in ways that resemble what oceanographers and meteorologists call fronts on Earth. 

Fronts are often discussed in weather forecasts – cold fronts or storm fronts, for example – but they apply to both gases and liquids. A front is the boundary between gas or liquid masses with different densities due to differences in properties like temperature. In the ocean, fronts can also be due to differences in salinity, which influences the density of seawater along with temperature. A key feature of fronts is that their leading edges feature strong vertical velocities that can create winds or currents. 

To try to understand the role of the filaments she could clearly see in between the cyclones on Jupiter in Juno’s images, Siegelman looked at a series of infrared images from Juno. The batch of images were of Jupiter’s north polar region and were taken in 30-second increments.

The fact that the images were in infrared allowed Siegelman and her co-author Patrice Klein of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, and the Ecole Normale Superieure to calculate temperature – bright areas were warmer and dark areas were cooler. On Jupiter, the hotter parts of the atmosphere correspond to thin clouds and the colder parts represent thick cloud cover, blocking more of the heat emanating from Jupiter’s super-heated core. The researchers then tracked the movement of clouds and filaments across the 30 second intervals separating the photographs to calculate horizontal wind speeds. 

These two pieces of information allowed Siegelman and Klein to apply methods from ocean and atmospheric science to Jupiter, allowing them to calculate the vertical wind speeds that would correspond to the temperatures and horizontal wind speeds the researchers derived from the images. Once the team calculated the vertical wind speeds, they were able to see that Jupiter’s filaments were indeed behaving like fronts on Earth.

Those vertical wind speeds at the edges of fronts on Jupiter also meant that the fronts were involved in transporting energy in the form of heat from the planet’s hot interior to its upper atmosphere – fueling the giant cyclones. Though convection is the main driver, the fronts account for a quarter of the total kinetic energy powering Jupiter’s cyclones and forty percent of the vertical heat transport.

“These cyclones on Jupiter’s poles have persisted since they were first observed in 2016,” said Siegelman. “These filaments in between the large vortices are relatively small but they are an important mechanism for sustaining the cyclones. It’s fascinating that fronts and convection are present and influential on Earth and Jupiter – it suggests that these processes may also be present on other turbulent fluid bodies in the universe.” 

Siegelman also said that Jupiter’s massive scale and Juno’s high-resolution imagery can allow for a clearer visualization of the ways in which smaller-scale phenomena like fronts connect to larger ones like cyclones and the atmosphere at large – connections that are often hard to observe on Earth where they are much smaller and more ephemeral. However, she added, a long-awaited new satellite known to researchers as SWOT, is poised to make these kinds of ocean phenomena vastly easier to observe.

“There is some cosmic beauty in finding out that these physical mechanisms on Earth exist on other far-away planets,” said Siegelman.

Let’s set the time machine back 20 years to 2002. New York’s Ursula 1000 (AKA Alex Gimeno), DJ/producer/multi-instrumentalist, started working on his sophomore album after the success of his debut, The Now Sound of Ursula 1000. His steady diet of ’90s lounge revivalism, UK big beat, German club pop, European library music, spy soundtracks, and Japanese Shibuya-Kei sharpened his skills in producing his own take on this melting pot of retro grooves and futuristic electronic beats. This vision would be more fully realized for this new album. Ursula 1000 had an idea of a travelogue collection of songs, every track like a new stamp on a passport. For the opener, he originally had iconic model Verushka in mind for vocals. Locking her in became elusive and so he had a re-think. Swinging ’60s London. Groovy mod scenery. He needed a fun voice for this. Enter Rebecca Mader, who at the time was an up-and-coming model and actress, later to star in the hit series Lost and Once Upon a Time. A mutual friend connected them and she nailed the perfect cheeky, sex kitten delivery! Inspired by the 1966 film Lord Love a Duck, featuring Tuesday Weld — where her character goes sweater shopping and runs through a laundry list of exotic color schemes — we riffed on that idea and made it our own kaleidoscopic palette. This song had it all: sitars, Hammond organ (performed beautifully by Brother Cleve of neo-lounge act Combustible Edison), big beat drums, and some acid house tweaks to make it into a nice retro/future cocktail. Originally released on Thievery Corporation’s 18th Street Lounge label and now on Ursula 1000’s own Insect Queen Music imprint, this song would be called “Kinda Kinky” — as would the album on which it was featured. Ursula 1000 was able to score world-renowned contemporary artist Shag to design the cover in his distinctive space-age bachelor pad style. For the 20th anniversary of the release of "Kinda Kinky," Ursula 1000 decided to revisit this classic cut and give it a re-rinse, adding some tasty flavors of today but keeping its original kitschy vibe. For the flip, we have the one and only breakbeat legend A.Skillz transforming “Kinda’ Kinky” into a funky, disco house groove monster. An unadulterated sonic delight!

Die Tür geht auf. Mein Vater steigt aus und ich renne los. Er breitet die Arme aus. „Hallo“, rufe ich, und dann klebe ich an seiner Brust, „endlich bist du wieder da.“ Ich spüre, wie er nickt, seine Wange an meiner Wange. Ich schließe kurz die Augen und atme seinen Geruch ein, den ich so vermisst habe.

 

Nachmittags scheint die Sonne so ins Wohnzimmer, dass wir uns im Fernseher spiegeln. Meine Mutter würde sagen: „Draußen ist so schönes Wetter und ihr sitzt hier drin, ihr habt sie ja nicht mehr alle.“ Ihre Stimme wäre lauter als sonst. Das wissen wir und deswegen schalten wir den Fernseher um kurz vor sechs aus, bevor sie wiederkommt.

 

Jan bestellt eine zweite Runde, er fragt mich nach der Narbe im Mundwinkel, die meinen Mund verbreitert, ich versuche nicht, sie zu überschminken. „Ein Unfall“, sage ich, und Jan streicht sich mit der rechten Hand über seine Narbe am Kinn, „ein Unfall“, sagt er, dann stehen schon wieder Schnapsgläser vor uns, bis zum Rand gefüllt. Der Wodka läuft über meine Finger, als ich das Glas anhebe und wir uns zuprosten.

 

Julie habe morgen Geburtstag, sagt er, deswegen feiern wir heute, und ich frage mich, wann ich das letzte Mal Geburtstag gefeiert habe, wann Gäste bei mir waren oder bei uns, wann ich Glückwünsche empfangen habe und Umarmungen, mir ein Kuchen gebacken wurde. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern. Aber ich erinnere mich, dass meine Mutter sagte, dass sie für Vaters Geburtstag eine Idee habe, dass es eine Überraschung werde. Ich erinnere mich an unsere Vorbereitungen im Garten und in der Küche und daran, dass es das letzte Mal war. Meine Mutter, die danach nie wieder eine Idee für einen Geburtstag hatte, und ich, die verlernt hat, wie man Geschenke aussucht und sie verpackt, wie man Geschenke annimmt oder was man antwortet, wenn man nach einem Wunsch gefragt wird.

 

Ich wünsche mir, dass meine Mutter etwas darüber sagt, wie sie sich fühlt. Ich wünsche mir, dass sie zu mir sagt: „Juno, es ist schwierig, ich weiß das, aber wir schaffen es, das Schlimme wird vorübergehen.“ Ich wünsche es mir, obwohl ich weiß, dass meine Mutter wahrscheinlich lügen müsste, weil sie gar nicht weiß, wie das ist, und ob das Schlimme wirklich vorbeigeht. Ich wünsche mir, dass meine Mutter morgen eine Decke in den Fahrradkorb packt und mit mir zum Stadtrand fährt, dass wir das kleine Tor vor unserem Haus öffnen und uns zusammen in den Garten setzen. Wir würden nichts reden, einfach nur das Haus anschauen und langsam verstehen, dass unser Leben dort, so wie es war, ein Ende hat.

 

„Ich habe jemanden kennengelernt“, sagt meine Mutter. Sie ist ganz schmal an den Hüften und hager im Gesicht. „Hallo Juno“, sagt der Freund meiner Mutter. Er steht im Flur, zieht seine Schuhe aus und bleibt.

 

Unsere Wohnung, die wir zu einer ganz anderen machen. Eine Wohnung, in der ich abends nicht mehr durch die Zimmer gehe oder in der Küche noch einen Früchtetee trinke, eine Wohnung, in der ich nicht mehr auf das Klingeln an der Tür lausche, abends um halb zehn. Ich gehe jetzt früher ins Bett. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich störe, wenn ich abends in meinem Schlafanzug und Zähne putzend durch unsere Wohnung gehe.

 

Ich habe Angst vor einem Feuer, davor, dass ein Wohnungsbrand alles zerstört, was wir noch besitzen, dass die Wohnung vollständig ausbrennt und die Asche der einzige Beweis dafür ist, dass wir dort einmal gelebt haben. In der Keksdose sammle ich kein Taschengeld mehr, sondern alles, was mir wichtig ist. [..] Die Keksdose packe ich in einen blauen Rucksack, den ich neben die Tür stelle. In den Flur hänge ich einen Zettel: „Wenn es brennt, bitte meinen blauen Rucksack mitnehmen. Danke!“. Aber es brennt nicht und es bricht auch niemand ein, alles bleibt, wie es war. Nur ein bisschen enger ist die Wohnung geworden, seit wir zu dritt darin wohnen. Wenn ich dem Freund meiner Mutter im Flur begegne, schiebe ich mich mit dem Rücken zur Wand an ihm vorbei und achte darauf, ihn nicht zu berühren.

Ace raised an eyebrow. “What did you call me?”

Juno blinked, the blank expression on their face making their confusion clear. “Did I say the wrong name? Oh, Great Seven, I must have. I’m so, so sorry-”

“Eh, don’t worry about it. You’re not the first one,” Ace dismissed, shrugging and crossing his arms. “You called for my older brother. Some of the professors around here do the same thing too. You get used to it.”

Juno bit the inside of their cheek, the paint around their eyes darkening. “Still. What’s your name? I’m sure your brother’s mentioned it before, but I don’t want to mistake it any further.”

Tall, an unmistakable glimmer of trouble streaking through his crimson eyes, the lax but still tense body language, and the notorious grin: there was no denying that this boy in front of Juno was of the same kind as the older Trappola that raised hell in these same halls a handful of years ago. 

“The name’s Ace. You better keep that in your mind, ‘cause I’m gonna outshine my brother while I’m here!” The first-year proudly announced. The painting subtly stifled a giggle when Ace gave a satisfied huff and stuck his chest out exaggeratedly.

The dark-haired figure nodded, the color around them brightening. “I’ll take care to remember. It’s easy to make mistakes once you’ve seen so many different students over the years, but remembering someone’s name is basic manners.”

“Wait, hold on,” Ace began, leaning in towards Juno. If they could have backed up, they most definitely would have. But instead of their physical back meeting the cool walls of the corridor, all they had was the endless yet constrained void of the temporal second dimension. 

“C-Can I help you?”

“Yeah, I’m just confused. From what I know, aren’t you supposed to be 18? How come you know my brother and talk like you’ve been here forever?” The redhead questioned, clicking his tongue. 

Juno swallowed, clearing their throat with a quiet cough. “Wouldn’t it be easier and more polite for you to simply take things as you’re told? Time might flow differently for you than it does for me.”

Ace frowned. “You’re not eighteen, are you?”

They paused, before shaking their head. “No. I’ve been told that my form is that of an 18-year-old’s, but strictly speaking, Headmaster Crowley estimates my true age to be much higher. Of course, we’ll never know for sure.”

“Knew it! There’s no way some old fart painting would be the same age as the third years here,” Ace chuckled. He placed his hands on his hips and huffed again, as if he was proud of making the discovery.

“Careful who you call an old fart! I won’t deny my age, but I’m still someone who you should respect!” Juno scoffed, smiling wryly. “Shouldn’t you be running along? Your dorm leader will be upset if he finds you slacking here, talking with me…”

“Eh, I can spare a few more minutes. If he wants to get pissy with me for… um… learning about the school’s culture or whatever, then that’s on him.”

Juno shook their head, unable to hide their amusement. “If you insist. Should I tell you something interesting about your brother in the meantime then? I think you’d appreciate a story like that…”

Ace lit up, the first genuine smile of the afternoon spreading across his cheeks. “Yeah! Tell me everything you know about him!”

“Very well: my story begins roughly seven years ago, not too dissimilar to where we are now-...”

“But don't forget that you are to be back, both of you, by a quarter to nine.... It is extremely important....“
