Sweater Weather ch.5
Ben and Kenji watched Bumpy as she slept on Ben’s lap, Carmen sitting next to him to stroke her flank as she read her new manga, brown eyes scanning over each detail of the art.
Kenji had sat on the sofa and Ben flush against him, acting as the comfortable partner and lover.
But Ben couldn’t help but feel how comfortable Kenji was. How well he fit to his side. How warm this image of them with a dog and his sister relaxing in the living room was. He leaned his head back and Kenji looked away from the movie to nuzzle in his hair.
Ben wanted this to real if only to feel the comfort and trust in that single moment.
“Dinner’s ready.” Candy said as she came in, pausing to look at them and smile.
Bumpy yipped and stood, stretching before she followed Candy to her new bowl in the corner of the dining room on a soft rug.
Ben got up and Kenji followed, Carmen calling she wanted to finish the next few pages.
Kenji pulled out Ben’s chair and smiled when he sat down with a soft thank you.
Once Carmen was seated, Kenji sat between where Kosei would sit at the head and Ben.
Candy brought out a savory casserole with meat, cheese, tortillas and chili. She then placed down bowls of red rice, refried beans, chips, red and green salsa and cabbage.
“Enchilada casserole!” Carmen said excitedly, then looked at Ben from across the table. “It’s Kenji’s favorite!”
Kenji nodded and was happy to help Ben fill his plate.
Once he had a substantial amount of everything, Ben noticed they were watching him. He then saw that they were holding hands.
“Are you comfortable with grace, Ben?” Candy asked.
“I…yes ma’am.” He said and took Kenji’s and Carmen’s hands.
The family closed their eyes and he noticed only Candy and Kenji bowed their heads. He quickly closed his own eyes as Candy prayed outload.
“Dear provider and father above, thank you for reuniting our family this winter. Thank you for the safe journey of my son and our transition into our new home. Thank you for blessing us with Ben and Bumpy. And thank you for giving us so much more to be thankful for and love. And we say”
“Amen.” She and her family chorused.
Ben lowered his hands and smiled, blushing as he held back tears.
“Ben?!” Carmen asked and Ben quickly wiped his cheeks.
“Sorry. Sorry. It’s just been a while since I’ve prayed.”
“We don’t expect you to be obligated to, Honey.” Candy said and Kosei nodded.
“How you express or don’t express your faith is up to you. But thank you for joining our thanks.” Kosei said gently.
“Does your family have a faith?”
“I uh, I think we were Jewish.” He said.
“Think you were?” Kosei asked.
“Um, my mom was the religious one and um…my Uncle got work overseas so it’s uh…just been me.” He said.
“What?”
“I didn’t want to stress my uncle out and he knew I was with friends and I haven’t…I haven't even told him about Kenji to be honest. It’s been so long and I…”
“Oh, Sweetie.” Candy whispered. “and your mother—”
“Mom.” Kenji said and she covered her mouth in surprised.
Kosei sighed softly as Carmen looked from her parents to Ben, slowly putting the pieces together.
“Oh, Ben. I'm sorry…” She whispered.
“It’s okay. She’s with my dad and I know if I work hard, I can make them proud.” He said, sounding robotic at this point.
“Well, if it’s not too candid…You always have a place in this family. Even as a friend.” Kosei said and Ben smiled, wiping his cheeks again.
“I’m sorry. I made dinner awkward.”
Kenji put a hand on his and look him in the eye. “Never be sorry for expressing how you feel.”
Ben nodded as he looked down at his food. He took a bite…
And coughed hard, grabbing a napkin and holding it to his running nose and burning mouth.
“Oh my gosh!” Carmen said and gave Ben his water. “Kenji! Did you give him the green salsa?!”
“What? It’s not that hot?” Kenji said, grabbing his own napkin for Ben to switch out.
“Mijo, you’ve been eating jalapenos since you were in diapers! Mamita, get him some of the banana milk.” She said.
Carmen quickly got up and returned, twisting open a school cafeteria looking yellow bottle of milk and handing it to Ben, who sipped it slowly, panting softly as he finished it. He then whirled on his pretend boyfriend.
“You’re not human!” He said to Kenji, who was trying to hold back his laughter.
“Stop…stop laughing…” Carmen said, placing a hand over her mouth to hide her own smile.
“I reacted horribly the first time I had the green salsa too, Ben.” Kosei said. “I was sweating while pretending I wasn’t affected, then got sick later.”
“I told you not to put so much. You need to build up to that amount!” Candy said and Ben laughed imaging such a regal looking man sweating and red faced.
“Okay. Stay away from the green sauce.” Ben said. “I’ll remember for next time.”
He took a bite of the casserole and nearly melted.
“Wow…”
“One of the perks of my marriage.” Kosei joked, making Candy huff and roll her eyes with a smile.
“One of many, I hope.” She said.
Kosei took her hand. “Too many to count.”
“Ew. Mom. Dad.”
“Oh, they get to flirt, but us older folk don’t?” She asked her daughter, who giggled.
“So!” Carmen said, gaining everyone’s attention. “How did you two meet?”
“Online.”
“Friends.”
Ben and Kenji looked at each other and Kenji stuttered.
“W-well, we met through friends online…”
Ben put his hand over Kenji’s, smiling at him with steely eyes. Kenji’s mouth shut as Ben hunched his shoulders.
“Its kind of embarrassing really.” He started. “You see, he was video chatting with Sammy. And Sammy and I have been friends for so long…we were comfortable around each other. So one day, while Yaz was at a retreat, I had gotten out of the shower and was only in my boxer briefs because I forgot my clothes in my room.”
Carmen and Kosei looked scandalized as Candy covered her mouth.
Ben blushed as if it were true as he continued. “So, being so comfortable with Sammy, I was drying my hair as I walked nearly naked past her and Kenji unfortunately got an eyeful of my pale chicken legs. The scream I let out.”
Kenji chuckled just imagining the scene.
“And then I asked him for his number.” Kenji said with a shrug.
Candy laughed. “That sounds very like you, Kenji.”
“Texting Ben and calling him leveled me down. Made me want to come back just to…” He paused and shook his head, interlacing his fingers with Ben.
“He makes me happy.”
“So you two are still new to a lot of things.” Candy said. “Despite talking for three months.”
“Yeah.” Ben said and smiled at Kenji, almost genuinely. “He’s way taller than I expected.”
“But you’re just as cute.” Kenji said, making Ben blush deeply.
“Aw~!” Carmen cooed and Kosei scoffed at his daughter.
“Now, now.” He said, then turned to the boys. “Ben, I never asked. Do you prefer a separate room?”
“Excuse me?”
“Dad!”
“We understand how couples are and respect how you express your love.” Candy said. “As long as you’re safe. However, if you’ve only started being together…”
“Stop, stop this now.” Kenji said.
“I’ll be okay with Kenji.” Ben said with a nod. “He takes really great care of me and respects my wishes.”
Kosei nodded in approval of his son. “I am very happy to hear so.”
“Ben, I have to ask because it’s been bothering me…what’s that scar on your upper arm?” Candy asked.
Ben looked at the jagged scar on his left bicep. He covered it.
“It’s…from an old relationship.”
Carmen gasped and Kosei placed his glass down, eyes hard as he looked at Ben. Kenji squeezed his hand.
“What?”
“It was way before I met Kenji.” Ben said. “And I never brought it up because…”
“No, sweetheart, I’m so sorry.” Candy whispered.
“It’s fine. He’s…” He took a deep breath. “He’s gone and I’m far, far away from him.”
Kenji pulled Ben’s hand to rest on his chest. “Ben…don’t be scared to tell me things. I won’t judge you, ever.”
Ben smiled and kissed Kenji’s cheek.
“Thank you. All of you.”
Ben sat on the king sized Ben in Kenji’s room.
It was decorated in shades of red and gray, as opposed to the white and blue outside. He was dressed in an old t-shirt and pajama pants, Kenji showering.
The room was very…sparse.
It had rich dark wood furniture, plush latte colored carpet and pale pastel yellow walls that could be white in different light. Rich strawberry red bedspread and rugs and grey curtains and armchairs next to a white brick fireplace with a glass guard. There was a desk, a small table next to the large window with the armchairs next to the fireplace and with another tall, small surfaced table. The bed was in the middle of the back wall, two nightstands holding touch lamps and piled with soft velvety red and grey pillows overstuffed, but comfortable enough to leave on when going to sleep.
Bumpy snored from her plush pet bed near the heating vent, exhausted from the busy day she had.
Ben felt himself already getting sleepy as he read one of the books Yaz had bought him as an early Christmas gift. He looked at his phone
He text Sammy.
B: I told them about J
S: WHAT?!?!?! Ben, you didn’t have to!
B: It felt right. I trust Kenji.
S: Okay. How do you feel?
B: A little better tbh Like Like I have some more eyes looking over my shoulders to watch my back Idk
S: Kenji would kick his ass into next year! I WOULD TOO!
B: Thanks, Sammy. We’re heading off to the hotel tomorrow. I’ll send you some pictures.
S: Be safe! Yaz said to say she misses you.
B: I miss you too. Love you both.
S: <3
Kenji came in dressed in flannel pajamas and looked at Ben, who was still curled up on the right side with his book.
“Um…”
“It’s okay. You’re probably cold.” Ben said, pretending to read his book as Kenji draped the damp towel over the back of his desk chair.
“Are you cold?” He asked.
Ben ducked his head a bit, not wanting to make a awkward situation more so.
Kenji reached into his bag and pulled out the soft knitted blue sweater he had worn to dinner. He held it out to Ben.
Ben blinked and suddenly, Kenji blushed.
“Sorry! I’ll get you a clean one or—”
“I’ll take it.” Ben said, taking it from his hands and pulling it over his shirt.
He blushed as he smelled Kenji’s cologne on the collar and wrists. Kenji got in bed next to him.
“What are you reading?” He asked Ben.
“A sequel series of this young adult…um…It’s a little complicated, but it focuses on my favorite characters from the first series.”
“Read a bit to me?”
“You wouldn’t understand it.” Ben said. “But if you want me too, I can explain plot details and stuff...”
“Okay.” Ben said and found where he had paused. “Magnus saw hundreds of masked people in elaborate costumes dancing in unison, and around them was music that could be seen as well as heard. As if ripped from a black-and-white sheet of paper and turned into bright, living shapes, the notes floated in the air, drifting along currents of musical lines and wrapping around the glittering masks and elaborate hair of the dancers. Along the ceiling, the constellations were moving; no, they were the orchestra…”
He noticed Kenji had relaxed and was dozing off, soft snores floating from him. Ben placed his bookmark inside the page and placed it on the nightstand. He touched the lamp, and the room went dark.
Kenji wiggled closer and hugged him loosely around the waist.
He smiled and pretended this was his life, with a loving boyfriend and his family and safe and loved—
“Sorry…Brooklynn…” Kenji groaned and Ben froze. He pulled away and rolled over, leaving Ben cold and feeling empty.

Designs are taking a geometric switch for the Pre-Fall 2021 time of year. Designers are integrating designs into their pieces, in the form of repeated and concrete patterns that will add angles and level to a color palette.
MSGM used rhombus shapes into many sweaters for what seems to be a modernization of the traditional argyle pattern, while Beliefs, Alberta Ferretti and Marina Moscone took a similar method in modernizing tartan designs with the use of rectangular prints. Developers including Burberry and JW Anderson took this style a step further, with repetitive square motifs reminiscent of each checkerboards and plaid.
We now have seen angular patterns increasing for several seasons, as each gingham and plaid turn out to be increasingly popular in the past two years. Whilst gingham is most frequently utilized during warmer seasons plus plaid for cold weather, this particular recent use of hybrid geometric prints for the transitional Pre-Fall season represents an advancement of classic patterns.

The geometric images to look out for in Pre-Fall 2021
Geometric patterns are always within trend, though Pre-Fall 2021 will see a shift through classic check patterns in order to smaller, repeating prints. Look out for sharp angles plus small shapes, seen all through all categories of womenswear : eveningwear, casual clothing and maybe even athleisure.

Dream: not quite sweater weather
JW and I were taking a walk and ended up at the top of this hill following a winding driveway. We knew there was a house at the top, but couldn’t imagine the sheer size and setup of it. We were in awe as we approached, and were warmly greeted by an older woman and man, a couple. They were like your typical grandparents-to-all, and shared the warmth that their house gave, to any visitor. They showed us around briefly, but only to the main rooms. THis was not to be exclusive, but more so out of humility; they showed us where the necessities are, and turned their attention wholeheartedly to their guests.
I don’t quite remember the exact layout, but I know there were at least two floors, each stretching wide. They had explained that this side was their living space and the other, more for farm hands/work. I think JW and I made the trek because I wanted to see the farm up here. Sure enough, it was a site to see. It stood atop a little town, a more rustic suburbia, but not one that boasted wealth. I actually don’t think my brain made much of a farm, but there was a long stretch of garden in the direction of another mountain.
We conversed as they shared some drinks, and at whatever point we got split up. I think I left JW with the older woman as I was granted the freedom to explore the house/lot.
Somehow I ended up with a best friend (apparently this guy and I had a history of rivalry as kids, but now have bonded in a healthier way, sort of deal) who joined in exploring. Details are escaping me now, but I remember a storm began. Darkness was suddenly upon us. The wind picked up, and at the top of this mini mountain, it was no joke. We were making our way back to the house when we heard - or maybe firstly felt - a deep rumble. We turned our heads to the hill next to us and watched in disbelief: a volcano was beginning to spit, to steam, more rumbling. We managed to gather ourselves enough to turn and start sprinting just as the volcano began erupting. Lava spewed out and down the mountain at a pace that nearly froze us again. We just made it to the house, helped each other up to the second floor, and watched out a window helplessly as the volcano maintained its flow. We looked around and found some very nice wine. We wordlessly agreed to drink it should our situation worsen. I thought about JW, the old lady, the old man- surely they were okay. I looked again out the window and towards the town, wondering if the magma would make its way down the hill. Would the wisps of fire catch, creating yet another endless burn of the trees around?
It didn’t take too long for the volcano to stop. The house seemed sturdy enough to begin to assess the damage. I ran into JW and the older woman who seemed way less phased, as apparently the older lady was used to such events and had apparently successfully calmed JW, also wordlessly. I apologized for being late to their bottle-opening, as the weather had really caught me up- heh. Who knows where this best friend went, but we wound down together. JW and I were given sleeping bags and were encouraged to stay in the room, sleep here, and we’ll figure the rest out tomorrow. Trusting her entirely, we got snuggly and passed right out.

Ducktales/Disney Avatar AU (Part 1)
I was thinking about this AU since long time ago. And finally i got to end it.
Tumblr media
Earth, air, fire, water. When we were younger, the old man of the town told us stories about a person, born from time to time between each nation, who could master all the four elements, who were called "the avatar." He told us how the avatar kept the peace throught his time until he died because of the betrayal of one of his associates and that, as a result, a war was to begin. We also heard the stories, told by that old madman, of how the avatar had had a group of partners in which my Uncle Donald figured as a great waterbender. I, personally, did not believe these stories, because of my uncle Donald, and I remained skeptical. See to believe, isn’t it? I’ve never had seen someone who could master more than one element… Until that day when Dewey, my younger brother, accidentally burned my Uncle Donald's boat with his hands. Now, my brother is the avatar, he has to maintain the world order. And, you know what? ... I trust in him.
New team Avatar: Group of friends of the new avatar Dewey. It’s currently formed mainly by his brothers and Webbigail Vanderquack.
Dewey - The new and improved avatar (or so he says). Dewey was born in the southern water tribe inside uncle Donald’s boat, and he is the second brother of triplets, that is to say that he is the one in the middle. Dewey is the most powerful avatar so far as he is extremely strong both physically and mentally; but he has a problem: he has a hard time learning to control them properly because he always acts before thinking (Scrooge, his last teacher, always scolds him for working harder than working smarter) His abilities are superior by much of the previous avatar: in addition to the four elements, he knows pretty well energy control, healing, purification, and metalbending; and he achieved a better control of the avatar state, being practically conscious when he uses it (but this after a lot of practice and an early maturation he didn’t wanted to get). Funny fact: He discovered he was the avatar because he set on fire Louie’s sweater and then, trying to put out the fire he burnt all the boat. After that, Uncle Donald took him and his brothers to all the world and he belived it was because of the shame he made them pass that time (but Donald does this because he wants to protect his nephews).
Huey - He is the elder triplet brother of avatar Dewey, and Louie. He is a boy from the southern water tribe, the son of a waterbender (who died) and an airbender (who disappeared); is, along with his two younger brothers, in the care of his uncle Donald (who is a waterbender and expert navigator). He is a waterbender as well as his uncle and his father, with an innate talent for healing and soul purification through water, and his power is strong enough to control the clouds from the ground thanks to the arduous practice which has had since he was small thanks to being part of the rescue group “Junior Woodchuck”. In addition, he knows very well self-defense without element thanks to his training as Junior Woodchuck, and all the things that the JW guidebook has taught him. And because of his personality, the spirit of the moon gave him some abilities that only the water witches can possess: Astral travel, basic energy-bending, and the ability to enter into the dreams of other creatures. He has a responsible personality, organized, worried for his brothers, with a very particular temperament (maybe learned or even inherited from his uncle Donald) and with problems to know how to have fun. Curious fact: He has a red hat because Uncle Donald didn’t wanted to confuse them (the nations has to wear the same color. Every. Day).
Louie – The younger brother of Huey and avatar Dewey, with the same offspring as them: Born in the southern water tribe, son of an airbender and a waterbender, living with his uncle in a boat, etcetera. As for his abilities, he is also a water master who has control of the element as an innate talent, and without much practice managed to master the element much faster than his brothers; unfortunately he is too lazy and does not practice as much as them and somehow ended up being the weakest in power (though with Dewey it's pretty obvious because ... he's the avatar; but he stills weaker than Huey). After seeing what his brothers were capable of doing, he decided to begin a training by himself. In the way to the success, failing a lot because he didn’t wanted to learn with his brothers only cause of his pride, he found a women who taught him a lot like healing, fighting, taking water from the weather, and the forbidden water technique: Bloodbending. He can use this powers without the full moon,, even he is so powerful he can waterbend and bloodbend only with his eyes. He is a very loose and whining, manipulative, and too emotional boy, but with a little impulse he can get to do great things because of his great determination and cunning (for example, learning those forbidden and complicated techniques). Curious fact: He has Della’s visors just because Uncle Donald didn’t wanted to confuse them (the nations has to wear the same color. Every. Day). Another fun fact: He had never have watched his waterbender teacher’s face.
Webby – She’s a kyoshi warrior apprentice who lives in Scrooge’s mansion (the ancient air temple of the north). She lives in there with her granny (a Kyoshi Warrior trainer), and all her partners and the apprentices. She is a very strong girl even without an element to bend, with physical skills that are to envy like knowing lots of martial arts, a lot of history, of war, of war tactics, music, culture, she knows where the nervous points are to leave a person without their bending and physical abilities for moments, and she even is the little bodyguard for the tripplets (mostly Dewey because of the uprising war). She gets excited very quickly because she didn’t had a normal childhood, growing up closed in that air temple, just training to be a good Kyoshi Warrior as her granny. So when the tripplets came out, she had a taste of freedome for first time. Fun fact: She really is Dewey’s bodyguard, even if he doesn’t want to. If anyone of the tripplets gets violent, she has the permission to block them out of their powers until one of their uncles arrive the place.
Old team Avatar: The group that formed the closest friends of the Avatar Mickey.
Mickey Mouse - He was the previous avatar, born in the Fire nation with an older sister (who wasn’t a bender) and his parents. He gained control of the four elements and a little of energy-bending. Unfortunately it was not enough and he was murdered at 25 years old by one of the former leaders of the order of the white lotus (General Peter of the Fire Nation, who revealed he was in associate with the society of the red lotus). He was a playful, adventurous and some sort of irresponsible avatar. He kept his whole life a childish and selfish attitude, because of the different life he had, having not a normal childhood because of the training to be a good avatar; but despite this, he kept the earth kingdom away from a revolution, maintaining the world order. He had benevolent and naive attitude, so he is considered one of the best avatar that has ever existed. In a part of his life, he discovered he had a half-brother, but when they met, his brother hated him a little with no reason.
Donald Duck - He is a waterbender and the best sailor in the world, or that is what he says (because, truthfully, he is a better waterbender than sailor). He was one of Mickey's closest friends, and one of the few people who watched General Pete kill him. He was part of the society of the white lotus until the murder of Mickey and the disappearance of Della (thinking that was the order’s fault, and mostly of his Uncle Scrooge). He now lives in the southern water tribe, taking care of his nephews in the name of his sister and, with dying hopes, that she will return someday. And after discovering that Dewey was the avatar, he forced the family to move much of the city in the city hoping that the white lotus and/or the red lotus involves his family again in a conspiration (he hates them alike). His skills are truly impressive, so much so that he was Mickey's teacher in the element of water, and he is currently the master of Huey, Dewey and Louie (Although he initially taught only the basics, the white lotus command forced him to teach him all that Dewey knew). He has innate talent for healing, and when he is angry he can easily beat an army of fire and land soldiers alone (or all the beagle boys on a milestone).
Goofy - A soldier of the earth kingdom who did not agree with the revolution some rich people wanted to do in the earth kingdom. He does not own an element and is quite clumsy normally, causing millions of accidents, but his loyalty made him one of the most important in the avatar team. Currently, he lives in a village near Omashu, where he took care of his son Max and told him all his adventures as a friend and companion of the old avatar. But that was before he disappeared at the hands of the “face thief” (an evil spirit who steals your face). Goofy thinks that he is dead, so in every Max’s birthday, he makes a little funeral for him and sings and stuff.
Pluto - It was avatar Mickey’s pet. He is an ordinary dog, but it was his companion throughout his life, even because Mickey was a small mouse, the avatar could mount his pet. The animal was buried next to its master a few days after the death of the avatar; is thought to have died of sadness.
Honorary member.
Della Duck – An impressive airbender who revolves the tecniques of this ancient art. She was a pilot of the Northern Water tribe army when she lived with her parents and his twin Donald, as well as one of the first women on a real plane. While her brother is a waterbender, she is an airbender because her mother has the air genes and her father is a native from the water tribe. But she doesn’t worked as a monk because the aribenders where practically extinct. She is the mother of the triplets (Huey, Dewey and Louie), and with that, the mother of the new Avatar Dewford. Sadly, she never got a chance to see that, because she disappeared seconds before the murder of avatar Mickey. Her skills as an airbender were impressive, and most importantly, she was Mickey's teacher on the Air element. She was mainly the pilot of the avatar team and she didn’t get into the adventures as much as her brother did (she had to take care of Scrooge's plane).

Sweater Weather Ch.7
Ben sipped the caldo slowly, enjoying the slight spiciness that seemed to warm him from inside out.
“This is really good.” He said and Carmen smiled.
Bumpy barked from beside him, eating some dogfood mixed with shredded chicken and broth from their soup.
“Kenji, I had no idea you could cook so well.” He praised.
Kenji blushed and smiled.
“I’m so glad you’re not actually sick!” Carmen said. “Now I can be as loud as I want!”
“Carm…”
“It’s fine, Kenji. Let her hang lose before we meet at the hotel.” Ben said, sipping his atole.
“You really like that.” Kenji remarked.
“It’s a corn drink. A corn drink.” Ben said. “With chocolate.”
“I still can’t believe you’ve never had a real tamale.” Carmen said. “Mama is gonna freak. We always make a bunch for New Year’s.”
“Like an assembly line.” Kenji said.
“Dad. Hates it.” Carmen said. “Doesn’t like sticky things, but he’s always on masa duty since his spreads are always so even.”
“He gotta work for his food.” Kenji said. “He eats the most aside from your truly.”
“How are you not overweight?” Ben asked, raising a brow.
“Fast metabolism plus weights and swimming.”
“Perfect body.” Ben scoffed. “Even have the perfect shape for a swimmer.”
Kenji blushed. “So, yeah! I can eat like, a dozen tamales myself!”
“I wish I could see it.” Ben said.
“Y’know Ben…” Carmen said with a smile. “You could stay past New Year’s.”
“I mean, I could, I don’t have much to do but stay on top of classes.” He said with a blush.
“So it’s settled!”
“What’s settled?” Ben asked.
“Carmen.” Kenji started before she hopped up and took hers and Bumpy’s empty bowels.
“Gonna walk Bumpy and go shower!” She called and Kenji sighed as Ben finished his rice.
“Sorry.”
“Don’t be. I really like her and…” Ben shrugged. “I could stay.”
“Ben, you don’t have to feel—”
“I like it. I like your family and I like yo—” He snapped his mouth close. “I…”
Kenji walked around the table to kiss Ben’s cheek. “I like you too.”
“This doesn’t fix anything.” He said coyly, gently pushing him back as he stood.
“No, of course not.” Kenji said and hugged him close. “Sorry!”
He pulled away.
“I…”
“I’m not fragile, Kenji.” Ben said.
“But still, I use to shove you and your ex…”
“Is long gone.” Ben said. “But on the subject of exes?”
Kenji sighed. “Let me clean the dishes fist, okay?”
“Alright. Want me to wait in the living room?”
“Yeah. I’ll be there soon.” Kenji said and left him at the table.
 *
Ben was poking at the fireplace when Kenji came in, the flames high and warming the room.
“Nice.” Kenji said. “I can never get it going.”
Ben smiled and sat on the sofa; Kenji next to him.
“So?” Ben asked.
“Right to it.” Kenji said with a grimace. “Okay. So…what do you want to know?”
“Brooklynn. What happened between you two?”
“Nothing.” Kenji said. “And I mean it how I say it. There was nothing.”
Ben blinked up at him.
“I really liked her, at first. We were more popular and well liked and we both thought we were attractive and…I did like her. We went out and for me…I just wanted a girlfriend to say I wasn’t single. Birthdays, holidays and just little anniversaries were fine and cute. And I liked things like kissing and being held but then, on our one year…she said I love you.” He stared at the fire. “And I couldn’t say it back.”
He closed his eyes and say her. Young and smiling, her green eyes widening as she realized he wasn’t answering.
“It’s okay.” She said. “You don’t have to say it yet.”
“And then we had sex. We were each other’s first and to me it was like ticking a box of things I had done and she said it again and I…I lied to her.” Kenji whispered. “I think she could tell. But she couldn’t handle it. She kept smiling and hugging and kissing me. She would tell me everything and we would talk but I never really…I never opened myself like she did.”
 “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“…okay. What do you want for dinner?”
“Our second anniversary came up and she wanted us to get our own place together and go to the same university…I didn’t.”
“Why don’t you want to go with me? They have an athletics department. Or engineering…whatever you chose, I’m sure they would have something for you to work on your career.”
“I don’t want to leave Carmen.”
“Okay. But if we go t Hammond U together, we could get our own place a-and maybe—”
“Brooklynn, I don’t want to go to Hammond U.” Kenji snapped. “Please stop asking me.”
“Kenji, I want to go!”
“Then go!” He yelled. “We have cell phones, and I can go visit! Why is this such a big deal?”
“…We’ve been a couple for two years. Don’t you want to be with me?” She asked. “Don’t you want to get married and have a family after all this?”
Kenji bit his lip and swallowed.
“Oh my god…You…you settled with me. You don’t love me; you love having a girlfriend!” She yelled, face red, too red around the cheeks. “I can’t believe…”
“Brooklynn, I do care about you—”
“Do you want to marry me?” She asked, eyes filling with tears. “Because I want to marry you.”
“I…I don’t know…”
“Kenji, why are you with me if you don’t want a future with me?” She asked and he couldn’t answer.
“I’m sorry…” He said, feeling like she was the wrong height, her face too sharp, her eyes too green. She wasn’t who he wanted to wake up next to. And she could see it in his face.
“No. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I was so desperate to be with you, I never cared about myself. Well, I know better. You will never love me. Not how I love you.”
She sobbed and took off her rings, the necklace he got her for her birthday and her charm bracelet.
“No, keep them—” Kenji begged.
“I don’t need things!” She yelled. “I needed…I needed a boyfriend. Get out of my apartment.”
Kenji took them with shaking hands.
“I’m sorry—”
“Get out!!” She yelled.
“And I left…” Kenji said. “I grabbed my things and drove to the airport. I was going to go back to Seattle and settle in the cabin for a bit, but I just chose the next flight out of Cali. And I ended up in India. Took out as much cash as I could carry safely and found one of those spiritual retreats all those people with mid life crisis take. I didn’t take it seriously enough and so I bummed around a community of hipsters from the US. Did some work there, ran out of money, used the last to get home after four months of ignoring everything around me.”
“And now?” Ben asked.
“I…” Kenji’s voice cracked, and he chuckled, tears gathering as he licked his lips and looked into the flames. “I don’t like…me.”
Ben turned to him as Kenji used his shirt collar to wipe his face.
“I don’t like who I was, who I am. I just…I hurt everyone. I hurt you, I hurt Brooklyn and being away from Carmen hurt her too and I…” He sniffed. “I don’t know how to fix me, so I don’t hurt anyone again.”
“I think you’re doing pretty great right now.” Ben said and Kenji scoffed.
“It took balls to come back and come see your family and admit what you did.” Ben said. “Being honest is one of the bravest first steps someone can take with themselves.”
“So says the fake boyfriend.”
“So says the real friend.” Ben retorted and took Kenji’s jaw in his hands. “I am your friend Kenji. And I hated who you were, but…I really like who you’re becoming.”
“And who am I becoming?” Kenji whispered.
“Real.” Ben said and hugged him tightly. “Now cry it out.”
Kenji sniffed. “I’m gonna snot up your shirt.”
“I can steal one of yours.” Ben said and Kenji laughed.
“It’s okay, Kenji.” Ben said. “You can become better.”
“Thank you.” Kenji whispered and sobbed.  “Thank you.”
 *
Kenji drank down the last of his water, his eyes puffy and red as Ben came back in one of his old sweaters.
“How are you feeling?” Ben asked.
“Like my head is full of buzzing bees.”
“You cried a lot. Food can help.” Ben said.
“Dessert is in the fridge. The chocolate in the ceramic bowls.”
“Okay.” Ben said and left, only to return with two bowls and two spoons, both with a heavy amount of whipped cream on top.
“Carmen must have gotten to them earlier.” Kenji said, noting how stiff the whipped cream looked.
“Pudding?”
“More of a chocolate custard. Pots de Crème. Made with Mexican chocolate.” Kenji said.
“How are you not a chef?” Ben asked.
“Don’t like being told what to do.” Kenji said.
“Not true. I boss you around plenty.” Ben joked. “But for now, I suppose I can cater to you. What do you want right now?”
“Feed me chocolate and tell me I’m pretty?” Kenji asked and Ben burst out laughing.
Kenji sat up and took a bowl.
“What would you do, if you could do anything?” Ben asked with a smile.
“Anything?” Kenji asked. “Geeze…um…I don’t know. What could I do with my limited repertoire?”
“Model.” Ben said with a shrug. “Cook. Um, maybe be an interpreter. Or even an actor.”
“Really settling in my looks.” Kenji teased.
“They’re good looks.” Ben said.
“Thank you, but these are only for my fake boyfriend—”
“Oh my gosh, this is so good!” Ben exclaimed around a mouth of custard.
“Uh…it is?” Kenji asked. “I mean, of course it is!”
“Kenji, you have a gift.” Ben said as he took another bite.
“Well, if your bookstore has a café, I can…can always help out there.” Kenji said with a blush.
Ben looked up at him with wide eyes and Kenji felt his heart hit his ribs.
“You would…you would be okay working with me?” Ben asked.
“Yeah. I could observe too. Maybe we could make the back area a café and have the study rooms and computer lab area around there too.” Kenji said.
“Y-Yeah!” Ben said. “The front desk could be a resource area too.”
“Lots of pamphlets!”
“Yeah, and if possible, we can have an open area in the back. Like a community garden.”
“I think maybe a small area with benches and a fountain?” Kenji asked. “We could get another  area or build a small kitchen and indoor dining area. I was thinking two stories, but I think I saw a building with some land near downtown San Antonio—”
“San Antonio?” Ben asked.
“Unless you want to stay in Cali.”
“No, it’s just…I thought you’d be more okay with being in Cali.” Ben said.
“You want San Antonio.” Kenji said. “So I can settle there since we have a little place there too. The downtown area would be best anyway. And I know there’s more kids who need help there.”
Ben smiled and took another bite. “Settle?”
“Settle with the house. I want to work with you, Ben. I want to help the kids who are hurting. Maybe we could help the ones who hurt them too.” Kenji said.
“I think that’s a great idea.” Ben said and put his empty bowl on the side table.
Kenji put his own bowl down and smiled, pulling the other close, Ben resting his head on Kenji’s shoulder.
“And would you settle with someone?”
“No. I’d date someone I know I could love.”
“And how could you tell?” Ben asked.
“Can’t you?” He asked and Ben blushed when he placed a hand on Kenji’s chest, feeling the thud of his heart.
Ben looked up at him and Kenji’s eyes met his. He pulled Ben into another kiss, the smaller man climbing onto his lap and wrapping his arms around his shoulders. Kenji pulled away and rested his forehead against Ben’s before chuckling.
“What?” Ben asked.
“You taste like chocolate.” Kenji said and kissed him quickly.
Ben laughed and laid his head on Kenji’s shoulder. “I don’t want to be angry anymore.”
“I don’t either.” Kenji said. “Hey, Ben?”
“Yeah?”
“I like you, date me?” Kenji asked.
Ben pulled away, face pink with his blush. “I... you…”
He laughed and covered his mouth.
“Okay. Okay.” He said. “I like you too, Kenji. Let’s do it. Let’s date.”
“And?” Kenji asked.
Ben rolled his eyes. “Maybe we can be boyfriends.”
“Yes!” Kenji said, pumping his fist.
“You’re such a dork.”
“You like this dork.”
“I do.” Ben said with a laugh and kissed Kenji again.

Now that sweaters and boots  are well and truly in our daily rotation, the thought of springtime dresses seems like a lifetime away. Luckily, fashion month brings the warm-weather season that little bit closer, giving us a glimpse into what fashion-forward frocks we have to look forward to when we can bask in the sun once again. But don’t get your minidresses out too soon. One of the most unexpected and dominant dress trends we saw coming out of S/S 20 runways was one that involved fabric—a lot of it. Long, billowy, trapeze-like dresses were seen everywhere from Roksanda to Valentino. Hemlines were dropped, often grazing the floor. Many hung loosely from collarbone to calf with no restrictions, like an artist’s smock—often with equally modest Victorian high-neck collars and long sleeves that hung past the wrist. These are dresses that take up space—long and often voluminous with practically no focus on exposure—exuding a sense of ease, comfort, and security. If you’re eager to take on the trend before everyone else does, you can shop the gorgeous dress style set to be draped all over our favorite fashion muses in 2020 right now with our coolest picks below. Style them with edgy combat boots or chunky Chelsea boots for a cool-girl look this season. Long, flowy dresses were dominant at Roksanda, billowing around the body in easy-to-move-in fabrics. At Lacoste, maxi dresses reigned supreme, but this time in pleated varieties in shades of springtime yellow, aquamarine, and pastel blue. Fluid jersey fabric flowed beautifully from neck to ankle and wrists at JW Anderson in gorgeous shades of teal blue. At L'Oréal's runway, long, billowy, draped fabrics came in graceful spring florals with ruffles and voluminous sleeves. Valentino's vivid frocks hung from the collar bone to the ankles with no restrictions in a voluminous cloud. We could see ourselves wearing this easy and effortless Chloé dress to every spring and summer wedding season. (Bonus points for the cool pockets!) Altuzarra's color-block number is bold, eye-catching, and super easy to wear for spring. The tiered layered stripes add volume and dimension to the chic frock. Long sleeves, long hems, and a fresh silhouette that we're fully on board with at Stella McCartney. Take your white shirtdress to next-level chic with a trapeze-like silhouette that grazes the floor as seen at Erdem. Turn heads in this vibrant stunner. Pair this billowy dress with cool combat boots. The perfect dress to nail the trend. And this color though! Who needs to wait to spring when you can wear the trend in fall with this stunner? Minimalist chic. Take up some space with your frock! This could pass for designer. Wear the trend in a cool floral print. This is easy to wear to work and on the weekend. So pretty! Up next, the seven biggest color trends we'll all be wearing in 2020 .

What Do You Wear to the End of Days?
LONDON — In 1139 Archbishop Malachy of Armagh supposedly had a vision of the future that became known as the “prophesy of popes.” In it, the Irish saint predicted the names of 112 pontiffs who would rule until the end of days. Though it was later shown to be a 16th-century forgery, the second to last pope on the list was Benedict, which has suggested to some in the Roman Catholic world that the final pope could be the current pope, and the apocalypse is nigh.
Actually, not just the Catholic world but, apparently, the fashion world, too.
Over the weekend, Simone Rocha put the idea front and center on a dress. It was lovely — royal purple splashed with a gold scripted rendering of the saint’s name, draped in swathes of black satin — and it was sandwiched between piles of baptismal lace and tulle; watery fisherman knits and oyster satin slithers; elaborately embroidered cross-topped sacred hearts: the semiology of prayer, loss and rebirth. And it was not happenstance.
Brexit has finally been approved. Storm Dennis, officially classified as a “weather bomb,” was lashing Britain as the shows began, flooding roads and wreaking havoc. A designer here could be forgiven for thinking it’s the end of days. It’s definitely the end of something. The issue for everyone is what comes next.
“Of course I’m worried,” said Molly Goddard after her show of tulle extravaganzas mixed with chunky Fair Isle knits and nerdy-cool tailoring that was an ode to her youth in the late 1990s around London’s Portobello Market. “I’m worried about the people in my factories, most of whom aren’t English, even though the factories are nearby.”
That’s to be expected. As was the existential questioning of identity that was an underlying current in so many of the clothes here: What does it mean to be British? What content do these symbols we put on our backs contain any more?
What was less predictable was where such thinking led some designers: not to the depths of despair, but somewhere else entirely. To a world after doomsday. To renewal, and reinvention.
Could cynicism be out of fashion? What an idea.
Identity and Its Discontents
But first, there was a lot of black. A lot of big, swaddling volumes. A lot of covert messaging and a lot of wrestling — some good, some weighed down with angst — with the past. For some: a lot of royal sleevage. For others: argyle, houndstooth, tweed.
Victoria Beckham belted her curving black sheaths and neatly tailored culotte-suits with hands-across-the-hips silver and cut diamond-shaped holes into her sweater vests like a remembrance of things lost. Emilia Wickstead offered big puffed sleeves and even bigger skirts; Roksanda, a safe space of billowing, shimmering drapes of many colors and chunky, patchwork-nation knits.
At Burberry, the chief creative officer, Riccardo Tisci, named his collection “Memories:” of the brand itself, but also of London, when he was a fashion student, living in the Bethnal Green neighborhood, and of his trips to India, where he started his own label; of the melting pot of the capital and the designer mind. That meant — checks! And trench coats! Lots of them with feathers and faux furs, deconstructed into parts and twisted into sari-like assemblages; mixed and matched and also madras for men and women; leopard and contrasting linings thrown in.
Also the occasional big star plastered on the front of a shirt, and a festival’s worth of rugby stripes in cinnamon and turmeric, as if for a game of Quidditch in Mumbai. Also some go-go silver fringe, for evening. Also a lot of green (afterward Burberry announced the show had been certified carbon neutral and that it was creating what it called “a regeneration fund” to support carbon insetting in its supply chain).
If that sounds like it is skating across the surface — not the environmental initiatives, which are laudable, but the fashion interpretations of the national totems — that’s also how it looked: polished, easy to wear, but lacking depth and soul. Which is odd, because Mr. Tisci is nothing if not an emotional designer, and it often takes an outsider (he’s Italian) to really grapple with a country’s imagery. It’s as if he is deliberately denaturing himself to appeal to as many people as possible; going not with his gut, but with his market research.
Of Risk and Reward
In any case, it still made more sense than Tommy Hilfiger’s #TommyNow celebration of Americana, inclusivity and his celebrity connections in stars, stripes, anchors aweigh, neon and slogans — “Just Rise;” “Still Human;” “Loyalty” — via collaborations with the singer H.E.R. and the Formula One star Lewis Hamilton. The effect was of a semi-party in a place that isn’t really in the mood to party any more (and that has increasingly mixed feelings about the “special relationship” between itself and its former colony anyway). The message was meaningful, but the medium confused.
Mr. Hilfiger has never been a thinking person’s designer. That is absolutely fine; not all clothes need a philosophical grounding (that would be exhausting). But a little sensitivity to context and timing is no bad thing.
British fashion — London fashion — has always had an identity more rooted in risk-taking creativity than in page-view calculation and hashtags.
In the willingness, for example, of Hussein Chalayan to not just double down on the idea of a suit and turn a pair of trousers into a cardigan for his Chalayan show, so the legs wrap the shoulders and the hips shadow the back, but to dare to write and sing his own songs, live, as an accompaniment (that’s putting yourself out there). In the explosive romance of Richard Quinn’s Buckingham Palace-size florals and empire drapes; the pointed extravagance of his nod to Pearly Kings and Queens, the cockney performers with mother-of-pearl studded costumes. In a sense of history, and the gumption to turn it on its head.
Historical Revisionism
Which is why it was so striking to see the connections between the 1920s and the 2020s being drawn at Erdem, with his Cecil Beaton-inspired checkerboards and bias frills; his Erté feathers and lamé Wedgewood-print puffers; his flapper dresses dripping loops of pearls. At Christopher Kane, where things took a turn for the sexually subversive (he called his show “Naturotica’) in more Art Deco geometries. Meant, apparently, to reference the love triangle of Adam, Eve and the serpent, and followed by lacy lingerie slips, strait-laced shirt dresses with sheer mesh tops and chain mail apple-red skirts slit to mid-hip on either side.
And at JW Anderson, where in a terrific collection Jonathan Anderson reached across the century to mix the classic with the couture with the sci-fi to create something viscerally, elegantly modern.
“I was thinking about that moment in the ’20s when everything resurged and rebounded,” he said backstage after the show, which he dubbed “nouveau chic.”
So he took heritage swing coats in camel and wool and blew them up to “optimistic volumes,” adding giant swaddling leather collars; crushed fantasy beer-can-print lamé into shift dresses; crafted sleeveless metallic bubble gowns out of fringed metallic knits to mimic a very glamorous Snuffleupagus; and topped the shoulders of flowing flannel capes, curvaceous tweed coats and silver screen siren gowns with fronds of pearly cellophane that wafted gently in the wind.
It is possible, of course, to question whether the 1920s — the years between the wars — is actually the best harbinger for fashion to embrace. They may have represented a great creative flowering, a burst of energy and social revolution, but they did not exactly end well. On the other hand, you can’t argue with the fact that if, indeed, the four horsemen are coming, at least this way we can greet them with aplomb.

Experts Pick 14 Best Jackets for Men
The changing seasons present their own unique challenges, especially when it comes to dressing. Days can be hot by midmorning and chilly by late afternoon, and everything else in between. Consider a lightweight jacket your best defense.
When looking for a transitional jacket, you’ll want something substantial but not cumbersome, stylish yet versatile, and up to the challenge of battling errant wind or wet.
Here are 14 jackets as selected by our network of fashion experts, stylish fellas who’ve considered the nuance of appropriate outerwear to handle whatever wacky weather lies ahead.
The Nondreary Raincoat
Eye/Loewe/Nature color-block nylon hooded jacket | mrporter.com
Recommended by: Jack Sachs, owner of Brooklyn boutique Drama Club
There’s a current trend of designers applying ’90s-caliber whimsy to the more granola, outdoorsy jacket styles made famous by the likes of Patagonia and Columbia. Says Sachs: “JW Anderson’s newest line interprets the staple raincoat with bold colors and a youthful outlook on what to do with April showers: run right in to them.”
The Simple Trench
J.Crew Ventile trenchcoat | jcrew.com
Recommended by: Justin Fenner, senior associate editor at Gear Patrol
The “bargain of the season” is how Fenner characterizes this stylish trench from J.Crew. “I love how effortlessly the rubberized cotton repels water, and I also love that it comes with a liner you can zip in on chillier days,” he says. “This is a value buy in the purest sense. Anyone who thinks otherwise is invited to fight me.”
  The Lightweight Bomber
Jil Sander Man Seattle jacket in beige overflow | mohawkgeneralstore.com
Recommended by: Kevin Carney, owner of Mohawk General Store
“I’m really into spring jacket silhouettes that are made in shirt-weight cotton,” Carney says of this bomber from Jil Sander. “The zipper wrapping around the collar is a detail I have never seen before, and it makes the wearer look like an expert shopper.”
  The Quintessential Denim Jacket
AMI point-collar denim jacket | matchesfashion.com
Recommended by: Steve Dool, freelance writer and author of a forthcoming book about men’s footwear
“Some people may try to tell you that there are spring jackets that are superior to a simple denim jacket, but those people, I’m afraid, are wrong,” says Dool. “A classic, in the truest sense of the word, well-cut, unfussy version can stay in your wardrobe forever. I’m partial to this one from AMI, but you can’t go wrong with the basic style from Levi’s, either.”
  The Suede Upgrade
Mr P. slim-fit suede trucker jacket | mrporter.com
Recommended by: Garrett Munce, freelance grooming and fashion editor
Although Munce wears a denim jacket underneath bigger coats all winter, he says it’s usually a bit too chilly for him to wear it by itself, even up until May. “I know suede isn’t the most practical choice for spring,” he says, “but with the same silhouette [as a denim jacket], it’s the perfect weight to wear by itself.” Opt for black, which makes everything a little more elevated.
  The Packable Windbreaker
Holiday Boileau nylon jacket | holiday-paris.fr
Recommended by: Gauthier Borsarello, menswear artistic director and vintage collector
Says Borsarello of this throwback shell, which is inspired by vintage automobile racing jackets: “Superlight, unlined, easy to pack, waterproof, and well-made in an Italian nylon … it’s the perfect jacket to travel with!”
  The Reversible Fashion Statement
Dries Van Noten reversible marble print jacket | endclothing.com
Recommended by: Christopher Legaspi, menswear editor at Vanity Fair
As Legaspi packs away his puffers and long wool coats for the season, it’s the easy versatility of a bomber-style jacket that he reaches for next—especially when it has a reversible print, like this Dries Van Noten, which features solid black on one side and a runway-tested marble pattern on the other.
“It’s a statement piece on one side,” says Legaspi, “and the other is perfect to pair with a hoodie and take on the subway.”
The Leather Jacket
Loewe biker jacket | loewe.com
Recommended by: Sidney Prawatyotin, head of Siduations, a popular fashion Instagram account
As far as basic clothing staples go, a leather jacket is a workhorse you can keep for a lifetime, which means it pays to invest correctly.
Of this biker-style one from Loewe, says Prawatyotin, “the Nappa leather shields you from chilly or wet spring nights, and it’s light enough for warm afternoons. It’s a bit oversized, which is great for layering over a sweater or jean jacket.”
  The (Way) Above-Average Vest
Brunello Cucinelli lightweight suede down vest | shop.brunellocucinelli.com
Recommended by: Jim Gaddy, deputy editor at Bloomberg Pursuits
“Listen, a vest is amazingly utilitarian—it can be worn on its own when there’s a nip in the air or under a sport coat or proper coat when it’s actually cold out,” Gaddy says. But if you’re going to opt into the Midtown Uniform (aka “finance bro vest”), consider the luxury upgrade.
Quilted, insulated, and with a two-way zip for extra versatility, Brunello’s suede gilet adds subtle color and texture and not-so-subtle swag to a closet that’s otherwise black, white, and navy.
  The Nylon Pullover
Adsum UC jacket | adsumnyc.com
Recommended by: Michael Baquerizo, freelance stylist and head of marketing for M5 Showroom and M5 Shop
Depending where you live, the window for a lighter, transitional jacket as the seasons change can be quite small, so a layering strategy is a smart move. For cooler evenings, Baquerizo likes this coated nylon pullover from Adsum.
“I’m debating between the green or the bright blue, but either way the idea is to get a pop color in that will still pair well with the rest of my wardrobe. I’m into the idea of an athletic-inspired jacket in a more modern cut that I can pair with a light pair of trousers, mixing dressy with the athletic.”
  The Office-Appropriate Workwear
Lanvin patchwork cotton jacket | mrporter.com
Recommended by: Isaiah Freeman-Schub, former fashion editor now creative director at Framebridge
“This cotton jacket by Lucas Ossendrijver for Lanvin hits all the workwear notes and integrates classic suiting fabric,” says Freeman-Schub of the tonal combination of black herringbone and navy-and-black pinstriped patches.
Also, there are pockets galore, if for some reason utility is the primary motivation behind purchasing a Lanvin chore coat.
  The Utilitarian Layer
Todd Snyder French chore jacket | toddsnyder.com
Recommended by: Frank Muytjens, former head of men’s design at J.Crew, now posh innkeeper
“I’ve always gravitated toward classic pieces with a heritage, pieces that tell a story and come from humble utilitarian beginnings,” Muytjens says of this Todd Snyder chore jacket.
“The name says it all, stripped down to its essence—no frills, just three functional patch pockets, the way it always has been,” he says. “What makes it modern again are the proportions and the material. The linen will age beautifully throughout the years, like a pair of jeans.”
