Kalimotxo, the Basque unofficial national drink, just got its own street in Tacoronte, Tenerife (Canary Islands).

This street name was born after a popular joke among neighbors, since the street lays between a Coca-Cola factory and a local winery, the two ingredients of the famous Basque cocktail.

The fact that the sign is also written with a Basque spelling is 🥰🥰🥰.

So I’ve been influenced into trying CdD wine by Pedro and your good self hehe. I didn’t realise it was available here in the UK! Seems like it’s a supermarket staple. Could you tell me what’s the better variety: Carmenere(which I’ve seen you’ve bought) or Malbec? I’m not usually a wine drinker (more of a spirits one) so don’t know much wine! The last red wine I enjoyed was a Malbec but I don’t know if it’s supposed to be “good” you know 😅😅 Sorry for such a cheeky request! Thank you!

That’s awesome you are trying something new! Malbec tastes a little more raisiny to me, and the Carmenere is more mild, but they’re pretty similar. I have a bias for Chilean wines so if they have Carmenere, I get that. If no Carmenere, I get Malbec (Argentinean). If neither, I don’t buy it. Cabernet Sauvignon is awful to me 🤢And I can never finish a bottle, it’s too strong in taste for me. So I usually have a glass with my meal and then make kalimotxo with the rest of the bottle. I also decant for at least 30 minutes before I drink it.

Enjoy experimenting and if all else fails, kalimotxo or sangria that shit! 😅Or bring it to just under boiling with a few cinnamon sticks and drink it warm. Mmmm.

Si un día me ves tomando Calimocho...

Tengo la fantasía de un día

pasar la tarde en una de esas calles de

la Ciudad de México con subidas y bajadas.

Quiero estar sentada en la banqueta bebiendo Calimocho

contemplando el atardecer

hasta que el horizonte se desvanezca

en la oscuridad de la calle.

Y si estoy bebiendo calimocho significa que estoy en calma absoluta,

porque no me preocupa lo que estoy tomando o la lejanía del lugar en el que estoy.

No estoy estresada por el trabajo porque puedo dejar pasar las horas

hasta que se haga de noche.

Significa que estoy simplemente disfrutando del momento y en paz conmigo.

Así que, si un día me ves tomando calimocho en una banqueta,

significa que estoy en el mejor momento de mi vida porque estoy en calma.

50 years of kalimotxo. The story!

Old Harbor of Algorta (Bizkaia), Aug. 12th 1972. It's the first day of the town festivities, and the group Antzarrak is serving wine, in an improvised bar in the hall of the Etxetxu building. Txikiteros [groups of men who would drink txikitos or tiny glasses of wine] are the first clients and, after two swallows, they can't finish their drink: "This seems rat poison!". Group Antzarrak then knew the wine had turned to vinegar. They also knew nobody would buy that drink, but they couldn't throw the wine away: "We had to sell it to fund the festivities, and so we started to look for a solution", tells a member of Antzarrak, Agustín Martínez Txintxu. "We had the idea to make a cocktail with the few ingredients we had in the bar, but we needed an attractive name"; that was kalimotxo.

It's been 50 years since 16 to 19 year-old young people invented the word kalimotxo. Even if they weren't as young at the time, Martínez clearly remembers where the name comes from: "While we were looking for a cocktail name, two group members running late came into the bar". One was called Kalimero; the other, Motxongo. "Someone started yelling: 'Kali and Motxo are coming!'". Kalimotxo. "Everyone liked it". Once the name was found, they mixed all the secret ingredients of the cocktail in a wash tub: sour wine, Coca-Cola, ice and orange & lemon zest. "It was very hot, and people asked for kalimotxo non-stop". Not only that: "That year, it was the most-served drink".

Nowadays everybody knows what kalimotxo is, but at the time of its creation it wasn't as known. "We went to Sanfermines and asked for a kalimotxo at the txosnas. Nobody knew what it was", explains Martínez. A year later, they went bak to Sanfermines and all the txosnas offered kalimotxo. "We had just opened the international doors" remembers Martínez.

Kalimotxo became so international that Coca-Cola registered the word as its own. Pepsi, on the other hand, used the term in a 2017 commercial: 1893: The kalimotxo. Moreover, there's even a company in California that has started selling a drink named Motxo in the US.

Now you know that it was Basque people - with names and surnames - who created the cocktail. It's not a Spanish drink, it's originally Basque and nobody will take it from us! 😁 🥤🎉

Do you like Pisco

I do! I keep a bottle in my home bar. I like piscola and pisco sours, but my favorite way to drink it is mixed with ginger ale, bitters, a little lemon juice, and sometimes simple sugar syrup if I’m in the mood for something sweeter.

I also like kalimotxo, although everyone makes fun of me for liking it.
