The Mosley Review: Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Tumblr media
And so the Star Wars franchise continues to expand in interesting and somewhat risky directions. During the time Attack of the Clones came out, if you had told me that there was gonna be a series about just a squad of clones and no Jedi are part of the main plot, I would say you’re insane. Well, here we are today and I am elated. The Clone Wars animated series gave us many different perspectives of the war whether it be the Jedi, the Sith, the Republic or even the inhabitants of each planet the war landed on. The most interesting and quickly beloved perspective were the of the ones really fighting the war, the Clones. I have fallen in love with a number of them and all their complexities, but Clone Squad 99 really shined brightest toward the end of The Clone Wars series. This series continues where that prior left off and you get a fresh perspective of the end of the war and the beginning of the Imperial reign. You witness the tragic death of an important Jedi and the emotional impact it has on them. What was fascinating is how the Bad Batch navigated across a galaxy that was rapidly changing and to see it was satisfying and heartbreaking. This was a surprise at how fun this series became and how much of a connection it has to the other series and video games that come after it in the Star Wars canon timeline. Now at times it felt like an “adventure a week” styled show which was great, but could've truly cut back and focused on the main plot. That being said, it still was an excellent achievement in storytelling and added layers to characters that stole our hearts the moment we met them.
Tumblr media
Squad 99 or The Bad Batch were stellar and fun all around. Hunter is an excellent leader that leads with compassion and has a strong moral compass that is always true north. I loved his sort of Rambo style design and his incredibly effective fighting skills. Tech was perfectly made out to be the genius of the group. I loved how he is a valuable part of the team, but his social skills are not that great, but you love him all the more for it. Wrecker was the big loveable heavy of the group. He has the strength of 50+ men, the skill of a great trooper and a heart of gold. Echo really gets to shine and I loved that he uses what happened to him as an advantage and not as crux. His irreverent humor is really appreciated in some of the more intense moments. Crosshair was cold and awesome as he would become the most deadliest of the group. I liked that he had the most edge amongst the group. They are all brought to life by legendary actor Dee Bradley Baker and it was astounding how much of an identity he gave each character. This was yet another master class in acting and imagination. Michelle Ang joins the crew as the only female Clone Omega and it was interesting to see her experience the galaxy. Her innocence is tested and sometimes taken away as she experiences the darker and more dangerous parts of the galaxy. How she navigates through her new found life away from Kamino was fascinating and truly refreshing. Her chemistry is great with the the Bad Batch as she starts to see them as their family which they are, but the bond gets even more powerful than that. There are a great deal of cameos and surprises and I won't spoil them all here, but I will say that seeing Ming-Na Wen show up once again as Fennec Shand was awesome and I liked seeing some of her history.
Tumblr media
The outstanding score was done by the mystro of The Clone Wars, Kevin Kiner. His compositions and orchestration is amazing and bleeds the very same blood of John Williams into every note of the score. This man understands the classic nature of Star Wars music and he pays tribute to it all and compliments as well with fresh takes of classic themes. Visually the show is stunning and I love the usage of depth in the animation. There are so many stills that can be taken from the show and posted at an art museum. Like I said before, my only gripe is that the show felt a little dragged along in the middle portion and could've just been 12 episodes instead of 16. It was a rollercoaster of greatness and then sometimes filler, but a great continuation of the timeline. Overall, I enjoyed the show and it was a risk that paid off in many ways. I can't wait to see what new adventures The Bad Batch will go on and the challenges they'll face. Season 1 is currently streaming on Disney+. Let me know what you thought of the show or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Best Bits of Star Wars Rebels S4 Pt. 1 (Ep 1-8)
Pretty sure most of this list is going to be screaming so just heads up
SO THAT PREMIERE THOUGH?!?!?  IT WAS AWESOME!!!
The awesome shout-outs to the chase scene and the pilot fight scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” with the convoy attack to get Sabine’s dad and Zeb fighting the Trandoshan foreman
Relatable Chopper is relatable
Sabine hugging her dad
The return of Bo-Katan
The overall animation.  Holy crap.
The awesome shot of Ezra that’s a callback to Obi-Wan in “The Lawless” in TCW
Motherfreaking Kanan pulling a Rogue One and wiping out stormtroopers in the complete dark
“Are you with Sabine?”  “Yeah, I’m with her.  Not ‘with her, with her,’ I’m just friends... with her.”
Kevin Kiner’s orchestral score throughout.  It’s awesome.  When is @starwars releasing it on an official CD?
Genevieve O’Reilly and Forest Whitaker giving their all as Mon Mothma and Saw.  I mean, holy crap, their argument was spectacular.
Chopper slamming against the satellite dish controls face first.
Sabine taking any opportunity to drag Ezra
THEIR DISGUISES THOUGH
KANERA KANERA KANERA KANERA KANERA KANERA KANERA KANERA ALL OF IT GOOD
THEY FINALLY KISSED THANK GOD AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND THEY DESERVE TO LIVE GOSH DANG IT (also the fandom’s reaction was amazing)
The Loth wolves *mic drop*
The white loth wolf’s leitmotif by Kevin Kiner
LOTH CATS.  ALL OF THEM.  CONTENT I SIGNED UP FOR.
Kanan finally addressing Caleb Dume as his birth name
Thrawn low-key stanning Hera
Sabine’s new look
Ezra’s impersonations
All the Rogue One connections.  All of them.
Kanan being his super snarky S1 self and it is flipping glorious.
Also, Kanan getting really pissy whenever his moments with Hera are interrupted
Hera jumping to hyperspace through an Imperial construction hangar (and possibly having the highest kill count out of the whole Ghost crew)
Kallus officially being a part of the Rebellion (and having floppy hair)
The debut of Rukh into official canon, and being voiced by Warwick Davis
Ezra having to crawl through ventilation shafts again
Lots of callbacks to previous seasons.  Lots of them.
Hera piloting an X-Wing
The return of Mart Mattin (who clearly now knows what a Star Destroyer looks like)
Rukh running on top of the buildings on Lothal on all fours like a chimpanzee
The first chronological appearance of X-Wings in Star Wars canon
Ezra freaking waving at all of his enemies
Guys, get the prayer circle ready!  Part 2 of the final season is coming soon!  Stay tuned for the mid-season premiere on Disney XD!

Hi! 4, 17, and 23 for your ask. Or whatever you like.
4) what headcanon will you defend to the death?
Hee hee hee, I have several! Mostly, I definitely think Obi-wan struggles with the dark side and keeps this struggle under wraps. You can see little hints of it here and there in TCW and some of the novelizations. He’s so powerful and he really keeps himself under control and if the man actually let go like that he would be terrifying. I love it. Also, that Obi-wan’s mullet of awesome in AoTC was a way of trying to conjure up Qui-gon and that Obes mastered both Jar’Kai and Makashi in reaction to Maul and Geonosis, respectively. I honestly would love to see Obi-wan doing Makashi, I think he would be elegant as hell.
Dooku. Oh my favorite Sith. I truly believe that Dooku doesn’t *love* this dark side business but sees it as the only way to fix something that it broken. I do think that at first, he thought he could defeat Sidious (with Obi-wan’s help, perhaps) but as he fell further into the dark, he lost that inner core and the ideals that he once held (I kind of see this playing out in season 6 of TCW). Also, he respects the hell out of Obi-wan and in another universe they would be sipping fancy whiskey together, playing chess, and going to the ballet. They are *so* similar in so many ways.
Finally, the cantina musicians. I think there is at least one of them that was in the bar in AoTC that had to flee Coruscant, take a crappy gig in that Mos Eisley cantina on Tatooine, and 20 YEARS LATER HERE COMES THAT JEDI AGAIN CHOPPING OFF LIMBS, they are not *paid* enough for this and they have just seen enough weird Jedi throughout their entire performance career but why is it always Kenobi? One day I’d love to do a series of one-shots from the musicians’ pov in the movies and shows. Ha!
17) what is your favorite line?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have yet to not laugh hearing that line and I can’t tell you how many times I have watched that episode.
23) what’s your favorite star wars musical piece or theme?
Oooooh, here’s my wheelhouse! There’s *a lot* of great music in Star Wars. I love the music from Empire Strikes Back when Han, Leia, and Threepio are being chased into the asteroid field. Of course, Duel of the Fates is EPIC and a lot of fun to blast in your car rolling down the highway with the windows open. I also really like celebration music from the end of Phantom Menace. The way the TCW handled the score during Satine’s death during the “Lawless” was amazing and sad and terrible and I don’t even want to include a link…poor Obi-wan (their joint leitmotif was really well done). Finally, Kevin Kiner KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK this past season on Rebels. I was *really* impressed with the soundtrack, from Thrawn’s creepy organ theme, to the spectral-ish music from one of the episodes that I can’t find right now. But my absolute favorite was the music during the Kenobi-Maul confrontation on Tatooine. GOOD GOOD STUFF.

Wing Commander
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the deviants of Welcome 2 Show; The Clintoris, The Guch, and The Devoslack sit down to watch Wing Commander!
Wing Commander was a victim of trying to jump on the new hotness that was movie adaptations of popular video games. After the success(?) of Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat, somebody somewhere decided that Hollywood needed to experience the thrill of space combat with Wing Commander.
Of course, this movie would go down in a burning furball of glory.
Awesome special effects inspired by the greats of sci-fi? Negative.
Historical accuracy to the source material? Negative.
Gripping acting to at least keep you in the space? Double negative.

The acting is atrocious!
Was Freddie Prinze trying for an accent?
Panaka from guard from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is in it! And he’s a Brit!
Mark Hamill the voice of Merlin? Mark was also a voice on the Wing Commander Academy animated show
  Deviant Script Doctor
The space station was in an asteroid, pretty cool, have we seen that before?
Zulu time? Wtf is that?
They do this thing that Star Wars n Star Trek to a lesser degree always seemed to avoid: somehow they’re more technologically advanced (space travel, simulated gravity, etc), yet much of their tech is inferior to ours (computer screens, floppy discs, etc)
What good is a self-destruct if it malfunctions?!
The one-liners are terrible. “Buy one get one free”?
“He really is a good guy once you get to know him.” Is that a popular phrase?
The Kilrathi were garbage.
  It’s Just so Ridiculous!
The effects for the fighters were sooooo bad.
Devereuax looked like a zombie, and Blair starts making out with her!?
The Kim Coppola Award Awarded to the Finest Worst Actor of the Film
  Matt Lillard.
However, since all of the acting was atrocious in this movie, we decided to flip the script and honor the “best” actor of this film, that being Tchéky Karyo.
  Deviantly Repeatable Quotes
When he got thru the quasar, his expression was so terrible lol like a poor man's version of Keanus Ted.
  Deviant Remake
Please god no.

Garbage, don’t bother.

The Mosley Review: Peacemaker (Season 1)
Tumblr media
Right off the heels of the fantastic soft reboot The Suicide Squad, this series about one of the most D-List heroes/villains was announced. I was skeptical to say the least even with my whole hearted trust in the director of the film and creator of this show. Everytime there is a series spinoff from a hit film, there is a decline in quality of storytelling. I am here to say that the same love and care that was put into the film the titular character debuted in was carried over to this amazing series. It is a gleeful romp with some seriously violent and glorious dark comedy that will have you cry laughing. I haven't seen this much reverence for great rock music that spans so many eras and it all meshes so well with the story! I truly did love that the tone of the series was consistent in knowing when to be raunchy and then to reel it all back in for more touching and serious scenes. There are actual stakes that affect each character and how each one deals with the insane situations they're in is what made each one unique. I won't go into spoilers because I want you all that haven't seen the series to be surprised. I'll just say that if you're not into this show after the first episode, then this isn't for you.
Tumblr media
John Cena has truly come full circle and has delivered a charismatic and career defining performance as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker. The character goes on an unexpectedly emotional journey throughout the show and truly learns to really fulfill his oath in a way that actually goes towards world peace. Robert Patrick was perfectly abusive and horrible as his racist father August Smith / White Dragon. You truly empathize with Chris as you see the barrage of vile that is spewed from August's mouth toward him. Danielle Brooks was wonderful as Leota Adebayo and I loved that she was the normal one of the crew. She was the eyes of the audience and I loved that she had such a growth from extremely unsure hero to a full on badass. Jennifer Holland was awesome as Emilia Harcourt. She was the strong female of the group that took no crap from anyone and yet she had a heart of gold. It was great to see her slowly open up to the crew and to Peacemaker. Steve Agee was great and hilarious as the tactical support and hacker of the group John Economos. He may be the butt of every joke, especially about his beard, but he gets moments to shine and his fair share of bloodshed and hilarious quips. Chukwudi Iwuji was great as the team leader Clemson Murn. His ability to walk the line between stoic almost emotionless demeanor to absolute disbelief in Peacemaker's stupidity while remaining calm was expertly done. Freddie Stroma steals every moment he’s on screen as Adrian Chase / Vigilante. He was a perfect sociopath that is beyond insane and I loved his childlike twisted since of humor in the most inappropriate moments. Annie Chang and Lochlyn Munro were great as the cops Sophie Song and Larry Fitzgibbon. I liked their buddy cop feeling and they had some fun moments while investigating Peacemaker and his father.
Tumblr media
The score by Clint Mansell and Kevin Kiner was excellent and warm in the best moments of action and character development. Although they did excellent work, the real star of the show is the amazing soundtrack that was constructed for this show. It covers all different eras of rock and it is a jam session through and through. I haven't rocked this hard to a soundtrack in such a long time. I'm listening to it now as I write this review and I love every song. The soundtrack became another character of the show and moved the story along. From the opening title dance sequence to the amazing action and to the great characters, this was a fantastic show all the way through that kept me surprised by how much fun I had each week. It is a true testament to the genius of series creator James Gunn and I cannot wait to see what his twisted mind thinks of for season 2. This is a must watch if you enjoyed The Suicide Squad and if you love great television in general. This is another reason why I love DC and I want more of this in the universe. Do stick around for the end credit scenes of each episode. Let me know what you thought of the show or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
