Holy Hyoyeon Batman!!

*This actually has nothing to do with batman in case anyone was wondering.*

Tl:dr “Hyoyeon dance OMG” is not referring to the title of the song or video, it is actually describing the exclamation one makes and the most appropriate response one can have after watching Hyoyeon dance.

I have been “made ded” by Hyoyeon on multiple occasions after becoming more acquainted with SNSD (don’t come for me on my grammar there is no other way to express this), but I feel like this warranted elaboration/ranting. Probably mostly ranting. Also disclaimer I know nothing about dancing.

The first 36 sec of the above video are the main focus (but it’s never a bad time to watch a live stage of Twinkle).

Background: Hyoyeon is dancing the intro song for a live stage of Twinkle. The song is OMG from TTS’s first EP Twinkle, and you probably remember it from the Twinkle MV. Her partner is Kim Hyungsuk who was also her partner on Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) Season 2. They made it to 2nd place. This performance happened towards the middle of the DWTS season.

Everything about this performance is perfect (read as: makes me want to weep). E v e r y t h i n g

The dance looks fluid and effortless, like Hyoyeon is weightless almost. However, it’s also a very ambitious dance with lots of footwork, lifts, kicks, and turns. Hyoyeon and Hyungsuk execute it beautifully. The two of them are so in tune with each other that it does feel as if they are a unit instead of two separate people dancing.

Additionally, the dance itself has a sort of push and pull, with periods of fast and energetic movements punctuated by grand gestures that slow things down for a breath. My favorite part is probably at the 34 sec mark when Hyoyeon does a kick as she spins around Hyungsuk before leaning into the final pose. You can really see the contrast between the sharpness of the spin and how she almost melts into her partner for the end pose all while maintaining the same energy and intensity. Honestly this duality is seen throughout even though it’s such a short performance.

A lot of this has to do with Hyoyeon’s own artistry I think. Her movements are strong and powerful to start out, but then easily transition to lithe and graceful. She goes between the two feelings so effortlessly, yet the change in dynamics is apparent and exciting. Ever the performer, her gaze also matches and goes from piercing to sexily smug.

Even her dress serves to further the performance, drawing attention to the each movement of her hips, legs, and arms. In other words, she just looked so darn gorgeous. Orange really is a great color on her. Her hair was also on point. Like man, her stylists need to take notes on this.

It was like a short taste of what we would see in her final stage for DWTS. Which is to say this performance was a concentrated display of the culmination of her efforts and growth on DWTS. As someone who went through and watched each of her stages for DWTS and then died and then lamented the lack of eng subbed episodes, this performance resonated deeply with me. I felt the same joy watching this as I did watching her Hush Hush performance after seeing the progression of her ballroom dance skills. It felt so free, and it seemed like she was having a great time which is honestly a mark of her best performances. I wanted to scream “YES HYOYEON!” the whole time.

I literally only just found this which is what prompted this ramble. I’m so upset that I hadn’t seen this sooner so I could have more time to fangirl, bc tbh the only appropriate response to Hyoyeon’s dancing is to fangirl. My heart is happy and still kinda screamy. Here’s to seeing more of Hyo dancing her heart out (I hear she’s been working on an album so I’m looking forward to a banger).

Bonus: Sooyoung did the intro one time and it was also AH-MAZING, probably one of my favorite ballroom dance performances of hers

34. Have you ever cheated on someone? No. I know how heart-breaking it is to be cheated on. If I lost interest in the relationship or needed time or to get out, I’d just confront it head on. But when I want to date someone, it’s because I can see myself in a long relationship with them.
